PUBLISHER’S LETTER: 2022 2022 has a nice, balanced ring to it. It sounds like a skip, or a heartbeat. I hope that the way the year sounds when spoken aloud might just mean that it will be a lighter, fulfilling, year. During the weeks of production for this CGN Arts Guide, naturally we look ahead to what will come and what we will be different, usually better, than the preceding year. At the end of 2019 could not have fathomed the 2020 that was coming. At the end of 2020 we were grateful that galleries were open CGN Publisher Ginny B. Van Alyea and still in business. Now, with a view of 2022 on the horizon, I’m an optimist. With the expectation that 2022 will be a good year, I’m most interested in what exactly will take shape and how we will settle into a landscape that is fully opened up following the challenges and limits of the past couple years. We can’t expect to do all that we did before the pandemic. The to-do list we had needs to be rewritten. I think 2022 will come with a broader acceptance of COVID in day to day life. Galleries and their collectors, along with museums, have come to appreciate appointments, ticketed entries and time set aside to view and consider art. Time, space and people are each very precious resources, so planning and making choices has become essential to everything more than before. Art fairs, long a much-loved yet lamented mainstay of the art market, will return in full this year. Many galleries and collectors will be grateful for their return and the exposure and sales they bring. Others will have decided they can do without them. Either way, being intentionally present in the real world, as opposed to the virtual one, is good. * Mid-way through 2021 my husband and I bought a house, moving our family from an apartment to a home with more room, including space for the CGN office. Moving is hard work – something I knew on one level but experienced on another this year. My optimism carried me a long way, but there was a point where being in between our familiar home of a decade and moving into another was unsettling. Nothing felt in place and the to-do list was certainly too long. One day right after we finally moved in, artist James Mesplé called saying he wanted to stop by the house. James was one of the only people who actually stopped into CGN somewhat regularly over the past few years, and I had worried that leaving the office would mean I wouldn’t get these dear, friendly visits any more. But James made it a point to come to the house and he was bearing a gift. He shared that it was a tradition when he was growing up that whenever someone would move to a new home, all the relatives and friends would arrive with a little something in a red envelope as a sign of good luck and as a means of “feathering the nest.” James told me you never know what you’re going to need, but you’ll always need something. His kindness was exactly what I needed – a sign for the year ahead, one in a new nest, and one for a new post-COVID world, where we will gather the feathers and settle into new ways of doing many things. 17

2022 CULTURE LIST At press time, full calendars for the year ahead were not yet available. We expect the exhibitions highlighted here to open on schedule and in person, or virtually if needed, but please check chicagogallerynews.com or contact the institution and space prior to visiting. There is a lot to look forward to in 2022.

This is the first comprehensive retrospective of one of America’s most compelling and controversial artists, Robert Colescott (1925-2009). In his large-scale paintings, Colescott confronted deeply embedded cultural hierarchies involving race, gender, and social inequality in America with fearless wit and irony. A FULL YEAR IN REAL LIFE EXPO CHICAGO WILL RETURN TO NAVY PIER APRIL 7-10 , 2022

ART FAIRS EXPO CHICAGO is back and returning to its place on the spring calendar, April 7–10, after taking place in September since 2012. The original Art Expo first took place in Chicago in May 1980. This year’s calendar change will shift much of the art world’s focus from September to April, with Chicago galleries planning their spring shows in accordance with the energy that comes along with the fair. Watch for lots of buzz. The Chicago Antiques + Art + Design Show is set for May 12–15, 2022 at the Merchandise Mart after two years off. The 57th Street Art Fair is planning a return to in person as well, when they will finally celebrate their 75th anniversary in June at the Hyde Park fair. As of press time, the end of 2021, we are still waiting to hear about dates and plans for Intersect Chicago (formerly SOFA) as well as The Other Art Fair (which did take place in 2021 but will switch venues in 2022).

WELCOMES CGN’s annual list of galleries has tied a record in 2022. We are proud to share nearly 100 galleries, museums and art spaces in these pages this year, a testament to just how much art there is to see in our part of the country and to the resolve to keep making and showing art no matter the obstacles. We also have more Wisconsin spaces listed than ever. Pick a street, neighborhood, suburb or city within 100 miles, and CGN can direct you towards art to find. We encourage you to read each listing’s program description and discover new spaces, artists and services, as well as revisit those who blazed trails early on. Each one is a small business or nonprofit dedicated to art, design and creativity, and there is something for everyone at every level in the art world.

OPENING RECEPTIONS Opening night receptions have returned in area galleries. Some galleries now have longer, open house style hours, while others open for a couple of evening hours, hopefully with the artist present. Either way you can make a day or a night of it, taking a road trip or enjoying dinner after some openings. Keep in mind that many openings happen in district clusters, where and when possible, but most weekends there is an opening happening somewhere, so check Chicagogallerynews.com often to find out what’s newly on view.

KEY DATES The art world follows a seasonal rhythm, whether in Chicago or elsewhere. There are openings clustered around the beginning of the year in January, and then again in spring, then mid-summer, followed by September, and usually November. There is also a lot to see in alternative and artist run spaces at any given time as well.

ART WALKS Here are just a few area walks to check out – some are monthly, others quarterly or annually. • River North Gallery Nights: January, July, September, November • River North Design District Annual Gallery Walk in Early September • Bridgeport Open Studios, 3rd Fridays, 7–10 • Gallery Night Milwaukee, Two nights, quarterly (Jan/Apr/Jul/Oct) • Ravenswood Art Walk, September • West Town Art Walk, late September 22

CHICAGO TRUBORN

WEST TOWN

Formally established in 2011, Chicago Truborn is a non–traditional gallery dedicated to supporting emerging and established artists with an emphasis on street art/graffiti. The gallery is known for providing affordable artwork in an approachable environment. Chicago Truborn has repeatedly earned the title of “Chicago’s Best Gallery”. Since its inception, every exhibition features two (site specific) murals to coincide with the currently featured body of work. This, not only, transforms the space but also encourages viewers to actively participate in the exhibition. Additionally, creating murals that exist within the space of their studio work allows the artist to express themselves in a more well rounded fashion: one that you may be more familiar with based on their public art efforts. INTUIT: THE CENTER FOR INTUITIVE & OUTSIDER ART

WEST TOWN

Intuit champions diverse artistic voices and pathways, inviting all to explore the power of outsider art. Founded in 1991, Intuit is a premier museum of outsider and self-taught art, defined as work created by artists who faced marginalization, overcame personal odds to make their artwork, or who didn’t, or sometimes couldn’t, follow a traditional path of art making, often using materials at hand to realize their artistic vision. By presenting a diversity of artistic voices, Intuit builds a bridge from art to audience. The museum’s mission—to celebrate the power of outsider art—is grounded in the ethos that powerful art can be found in unexpected places and made by unexpected creators. Intuit offers world-class exhibitions; a collection of 1,200 artworks; the Henry Darger Room; resources for scholars and students, such as the Robert A. ALAN KOPPEL GALLERY

RIVER NORTH

For nearly two decades, Alan Koppel Gallery has played a leading role in introducing contemporary international artists to American audiences. In addition to organizing extensive solo and group exhibitions of new work by gallery artists, the gallery maintains an inventory of select primary and secondary works by leading artists from the major movements in 20th Century American and European Art. Artists to first exhibit with us in Chicago include renown artists such as Robert Moskowitz, Bruce Conner and Jacques Villeglé, younger artists like Edward Lipski and Katharina Bosse, and the estate of Eugéne Leroy. In the mid-1990s, Alan Koppel’s successful private gallery turned public with the opening of his first space in Chicago’s John Hancock Center where the first solo exhibition was new work by Peter Halley. In 2001, the gallery moved and expanded its presence to a 4,000 square foot gallery in Chicago’s River North gallery district. The inaugural blockbuster exhibition paired new work by Jacques Villeglé with furniture by Jean Prouve. Past exhibitions include new work by artists Halley, Leroy, Villeglé, Lipski and Bosse, as well as shows highlighting recent acquisitions by Hiroshi Sugimoto, Vik Muniz, Philip Guston, Diane Arbus, Mark Tansey, Louise Bourgeois, Marcel Duchamp, Hans Bellmer, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha. In 2012 the gallery moved to its current Dearborn Street location, transforming a turn-of-the-century greystone into an intimate gallery space dedicated to showcasing significant artworks from the 20th and 21st century.

In its efforts to help preserve our planet, the Foundation’s Fellows and postgraduate Apprentices are engaged in realizing John David Mooney’s “Highway For Trees.” Mooney’s proposal to green the Interstate Highway System’s right of ways and medians with native plants, shrubs, grasses, and trees will reduce the carbon footprint and provide drivers with the beauty of nature and the impetus to take action now. INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF SURGICAL SCIENCE

GOLD COAST

Dr. Max Thorek founded the International College of Surgeons (ICS) in 1935 with the goal of promoting the exchange of surgical knowledge worldwide. The Museum was originally conceived as the ICS Hall of Fame and as a repository for its growing collection of historically significant surgical instrumentation, artworks and manuscripts. Beginning in 1950 the Museum received additional donations of artifacts, paintings, sculptures and books from many of the national sections of the ICS, individual surgeons and collectors, and other institutions. A historic lakeside mansion was acquired, adjacent to the ICS headquarters, and the Museum opened to the public on September 9, 1954. One of the first exhibits installed was the Hall of Immortals, containing 12 stone statues of great figures in the field of medicine and the allied sciences. Over the past two decades, the International Museum of Surgical Science has made significant progress in strengthening its educational programs and exhibits, as well as in the conservation of its noteworthy collections and historic landmark building. Today, the Museum’s four floors are filled with extraordinary artifacts that interpret the prehistoric through contemporary healing practices. 1524 N. FLXST Contemporary puts artists, their vision, energy, and their conceptual power first. The artwork showcased at the gallery engages viewers to think, act, and consider the works in the exhibitions for their collections. We represent artists who are often underrepresented in the art world, even though they continue to work tirelessly to gain a foothold within it. We vet each of our artists holistically and believe in their abilities to transform art collections and institutions to be more inclusive and forward-thinking. FLXST Contemporary functions as a creative space to amplify these artistic voices.

PILSEN ARTS & COMMUNITY HOUSE

PILSEN

Pilsen Arts & Community House (PACH) is a community arts organization and gallery located in Chicago’s Pilsen community, a historically Mexican/MexicanAmerican community in Chicago. Formerly operating as Pilsen Outpost, PACH has evolved in response to community needs to bring into greater focus community needs and amplify the visibility of BIPOC artists. It has become a space where both culture and community are cultivated while being accessible to all. We have innovated and shouldered longtime resident artists and given voices to emerging artists both locally and internationally. We have expanded our gallery’s mission and are beginning to work with emerging and established curators through a new curatorial residency. The goal is to bring dynamic and challenging art exhibitions to a community that already has a rich history of art-making. We hope to inspire and spark conversations within our community about the nature of art.

THE RENAISSANCE SOCIETY

HYDE PARK

The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago presents contemporary art exhibitions, events, and publications. “The Ren”—as we are known informally—is an independent, non-collecting museum driven by an uncompromising commitment to artists and their ideas. Exhibitions and events are free and open to all and accessible via elevator. Our current exhibition program focuses on four exhibitions each year, interspersed with live performances, that offer artists the time, space, resources, and freedom vital for ambitious experimentation and risk-taking. Our work with artists frequently results in newly commissioned art, and their presentations in our 3,000 sq. ft. gallery spur further scholarly and creative reflections in our publications and public programs. Visitors find a uniquely intimate and experimental platform for encountering artistic events—including artist talks, lectures, screenings, concerts, readings, and more— creating further opportunities for discovery and discussion both in person and online. We maintain robust archives, which can be accessed on site by appointment.

CHICAGO SCULPTURE EXHIBIT (CSE)

• GROUPS/ASSOC.

In 2001 the Lincoln Park Community Art Initiative was founded by former Alderman Vi Daley, and eight public sculptures were prominently displayed throughout Lincoln Park. With dedication, incredible artists, caring sponsors, and a passion to showcase public art in our neighborhoods, the program was transformed into the Chicago Sculpture Exhibit (CSE). For the past 20 years, this program has pursued its mission to install largescale sculptures in neighborhoods throughout the city. CSE is proud to say that we have 47 sculptures in this year’s show and we’ve installed a total of 556 sculptures to date! This year to celebrate our 20th Anniversary, CSE established the Richard Hunt Award, named in honor of Chicago native and world-renowned sculptor, Richard J. Hunt. Through this award, CSE opens the door to artists who otherwise may not have the resources to produce large-scale public art. A panel of three local museum curators were selected to jury submissions entered by new and emerging artists. The 2021 inaugural recipient of the Richard Hunt Award this year is Gwen Yen Chiu. Her piece, “Thought Vortex,” is reminiscent of work that Richard has produced, and adds a gracious elegance to our exhibition. We would like to thank our artists, sponsors, partners, contributors, neighborhood organizations, chambers of commerce, local businesses, individual residents, and cultural institutions whose assistance and support make CSE possible. Your dedication to improving our Chicago communities through public art is the heart of this program and we greatly appreciate your support. As the world is maneuvering through this pandemic, CSE offers a safe experience discovering public art that dot the myriad communities throughout Chicago. These magnificent sculptures bring communities together and spark the inner creativity in all of us to explore, imagine, inspire and marvel at the intersection of engineering and art. For anyone interested in learning more about the artists, a particular piece in the Exhibit, or in purchasing one of the sculptures at the close of the show, we are happy to provide 312–772–2872 more information. Please consider making chicagosculptureexhibit.org a donation to CSE, and/or sponsoring a sculpture. Facebook @ChicagoSculptureExhibit Twitter @CSESculpture Each year it is an honor to share this unique exhibit with Chicago, and we Download the Otocast App to have look forward to many more years of a mobile audio guide and map to the showcasing public art with you.
