JACQUELINE MOSES

Portugal: Little Village, 32 x 48

Recent world and personal events have strongly influenced the content in my work. Turmoil, separation and flight have become central themes, as well as the search for peaceful existence in the 21st Century and how to deal with the effects of globalization. Hopefully there will be solutions that increase our understanding and acceptance of different cultures and give us the ability to incorporate and use the best from each society to improve our lives and the earth we live on. The imagery presented in my paintings is reflective of our times, as is the technique used. Many works are a combination of photographic transfers and oil on canvas. All are derived from my photography and are juxtaposed to create the desired image.

PUBLISHER’S LETTER My son turned three not long before this publication, also now in its third year, went to print. On a daily basis the unpredictabilty of motherhood, along with running a magazine, keeps me on my toes. I’m always feeling short on time and more than a little overwhelmed. But in both cases year three seems to be pretty great. With each year there are big challenges to meet as well as small accomplishments to savor. The balancing act is worth it – for the obvious joys where my son is concerned, but for CGN I also take a parental pride in being able to develop a valuable resource that encourages people to make art a part of their life and also supports the many creatives throughout our community. CGN’s Ginny B. Van Alyea, courtesy of lots of caffeine.

This is the third edition of our annual CGN Arts Guide, and as with everything, we strive to make each version better than the one before. In 2019 we welcome 19 galleries and art spaces to these pages – a sign that we are actually sharing more art with our readers than before, even in the middle of a tumultous art climate. We work together to support small and midsize galleries, arts nonprofits and museums, independent artists and many others. So far the hopeful bright spots dispel any shadows of uncertainty. Another thing we know for sure in our third year of publishing this Guide is that, despite the inevitable challenges that keep coming, in order to keep your head above water you must keep moving. Have you ever heard of a three year old who gives up? Three year olds do not sit still. Even as the world frustrates, it beckons. This year’s guide is 164 pages (bigger than the previous two years!) and we have made our maps more comprehensive. We also updated our design to match our new website (see below). Even though we never forget where we started, with so much to discover in our world, it’s great being three. And since my daughter turned five this fall, I know that each year can indeed get better – and maybe even a little easier. – GV

CHICAGOGALLERYNEWS.COM At the end of 2018 we redesigned our ‘fourth issue’: chicagogallerynews.com. We have made it easier than ever online to read the latest art news, discover new art spaces and events, easily use digital district maps, and to read CGN’s interviews, art profiles and cultural features. We are also proud to offer our newsletters 2 x a week: Tuesday’s Art Headlines and Thursday’s CGN Art Planner. Visit us daily for event updates and news from around the art world.

NOT–TO–MISS THE BEACH AT NAVY PIER Created by New York–based designers, Snarkitecture, The Beach Chicago is an EXPO CHICAGO 2019 program, presented by Navy Pier. The immersive art installation, which consists of a large room filled with more than a million antimicrobial and recyclable plastic balls, along with deck and lifeguard chairs, umbrellas and signage that mimics a day at the beach, is a creative way to escape Chicago weather this winter. DAWOUD BEY: NIGHT COMING TENDERLY, BLACK After Dawoud Bey turned 60, already renowned as a portraitist, he turned his camera on architecture and landscapes; accustomed to urban scenes, he decided to photograph thickets, a picket fence, and Lake Erie. Through these choices Bey wanted to make a greater shift: from pictures of the here and now to the vast, historical subject of the Underground Railroad. ALAN KOPPEL GALLERY

RIVER NORTH

For nearly two decades, Alan Koppel Gallery has played a leading role in introducing contemporary international artists to American audiences. In addition to organizing extensive solo and group exhibitions of new work by gallery artists, the gallery maintains an inventory of select primary and secondary works by leading artists from the major movements in 20th Century American and European Art. Artists to first exhibit with us in Chicago include renown artists such as Robert Moskowitz, Bruce Conner and Jacques Villeglé, younger artists like Edward Lipski, and the estate of Eugéne Leroy. In the mid-1990s, Alan Koppel opened his first space, in Chicago’s John Hancock Center, with a solo exhibition of new work by Peter Halley. In 2001, the gallery moved and expanded its size and presence to a 4,000 square foot gallery in Chicago’s long-established River North gallery district. The inaugural blockbuster exhibition paired work by Jacques Villeglé with furniture by Jean Prouve. Past exhibitions include new work by artists Halley, Leroy, Villeglé, and Lipski, as well as shows highlighting recent acquisitions by Hiroshi Sugimoto, Vik Muniz, Philip Guston, Diane Arbus, Mark Tansey, Louise Bourgeois, Marcel Duchamp, Hans Bellmer, Robert Frank, Walker Evans, Andy Warhol and Ed Ruscha. In 2012, the gallery moved to its current location on Dearborn Street, transforming a turn-of-the-century townhouse into an intimate gallery space dedicated to showcasing significant artworks from the 20th and 21st century. 806 N. ARTS OF LIFE

WEST TOWN

Arts of Life serves over 60 visual artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities at two locations: our North Shore studio is in suburban Glenview and our Chicago studio is located in West Town. Each studio has a gallery space with year-round programming, featuring guest curators and artists from around Chicago. In addition, each studio supports an independent musical band that regularly practices and performs throughout Chicagoland. The studio artists and their work have been featured in prestigious venues throughout the world including Carl Hammer Gallery, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art, INTUIT Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, and the Museum of Everything in London. Arts of Life defies singular categorization. Our studio is not an employment program, nor is it an art school or art therapy program. We are an outsider artist incubator that encapsulates an artist collective and a working gallery. Above all, Arts of Life is a creative and collaborative alternative day program, a community made of equals who push each other to become the very best version of themselves. Our environment promotes equal ownership for each member, naturally encouraging artists to develop a sense of their own independence. We are committed to crafting a space where everyone feels genuine respect, trust, and, most importantly, that they feel their voice is welcome and heard. 2010 W. INTUIT: THE CENTER FOR INTUITIVE AND OUTSIDER ART

WEST TOWN

Founded in 1991, Intuit is a premier museum of outsider and self-taught art, art created by artists who are motivated by their unique personal visions and demonstrate little or no influence from the mainstream art world. The museum’s mission—celebrating the power of outsider art—is grounded in the ethos that the instinct to create is universal and the arts must embrace, represent and be accessible to all, regardless of education level or socioeconomic status. Intuit offers world-class exhibitions; a collection of 1,200 works of art; resources for scholars and students, such as the Robert A. Roth Study Center, a non-circulating collection with a focus in the fields of outsider and contemporary self-taught art; and educational programming for people of all interest levels and backgrounds. Its centerpiece is its Henry Darger Room Collection, a permanent exhibition and archives, which attracts visitors and scholars worldwide.

PARIS LONDON HONG KONG

WEST TOWN

Paris London Hong Kong is an evolving experimental site for international emerging and established artists. Since its inception, the gallery has grown into an important platform in Chicago for exhibitions that feature both a diverse array of artists and the varied interests of its curators. To date, PLHK has presented solid painting exhibitions, surprising site-specific installations of sculpture and objects, shows of photography and functional objects, projects that question print media and graphic production, a bookshop, and rare photos by Irving and Paula Klaw of pinup/bondage/fetish star Bettie Page. PLHK is a space for work that continually tests the boundaries of contemporary art and does so with a healthy dose of spirit and enthusiasm. The space is modest, but the work is expansive and always challenging. All of Paris London Hong Kong’s featured artists continue to make their mark at significant venues and through important projects throughout the world. Since her 2015 installation at PLHK, Alice Tippit opened her first solo show in New York at Nicelle Beauchene Gallery where she is now represented. The show garnered an Artforum review. Lauren Taylor showed at PLHK in January and just closed her first solo exhibition at Andrew Rafacz Gallery in Chicago. After his 2015 show Wyatt Grant completed a major site-specific installation at the Thompson Hotel in Chicago.

STONY ISLAND ARTS BANK

JACKSON PARK

The Stony Island Arts Bank is a hybrid gallery, media archive, library and community center – and a home for Rebuild’s archives and collections. Designed by William Gibbons Uffendell and built in 1923, the bank at 68th Street and Stony Island Avenue was once a vibrant community savings and loan. By the 1980s, the branch had closed and the building sat vacant and deteriorating for decades. Reopened in October 2015, the radically restored building serves as a space for neighborhood residents to preserve, access, reimagine and share their heritage – and a destination for artists, scholars, curators, and collectors to research and engage with South Side history. Please see our website for more information, including details on our annual fall benefit as well as ongoing artist residencies and exhibitions.
