ON THE COVER: KM Fine Arts KM Fine Arts has a new name and renewed vigor that promises to reignite the spark of this Chicago art community favorite. The gallery first opened its doors in the prestigious John Hancock Center in 2006, offering a magnificent venue for viewing significant modern, contemporary, and post-war works of American and European Masters alongside a select group of younger, contemporary artists in a striking, minimalist design space. The gallery’s rebirth began in December 2010, with an exhibition of 19 works by artist Fernando Botero. KM built upon the show’s success by following up with a much-anticipated exhibition of new work by Paris-based Russian artist Roman Zaslonov, giving Chicago art lovers, and many fans who flew in for the show, an opportunity to meet the artist himself. KM Fine Arts’ current show, A Summer of American Masters with Robert Indiana, runs through September 30, and includes works by Adolph Gottlieb,

Robert Rauschenberg, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Motherwell, John Chamberlain, Jim Dine, Robert Indiana, Kenny Scharf, Tom Wesselmann, and Andy Warhol. Each of these artists played a key role in the transformation of American art in the socially and politically complex climate of the postwar era. The gallery’s fall exhibition, Eyes Wide Shut, opens on October 5 and will present artworks from many European Masters, such as Botero, Chagall, Dalí, Miró, Moore, and Picasso, as well as several works by Lita Cabellut, an artist from Spain who recently held a successful solo exhibition at the Opera Gallery in London. KM Fine Arts will participate in SOFA Chicago this November at Navy Pier, exhibiting works by Botero and Anish Kapoor. The gallery’s appearance at SOFA will also include a special first showing of John Chamberlain’s Rose Tuxedo (see p. 14.) The gallery will host a special reception during the fair on Saturday, November 5, from 6-9pm.

Fall Preview - Letter from the Publisher Each fall art patrons, dealers and artists return to familiar routines, visiting galleries, getting back to school, and catching up with new exhibits. In the CGN office fall is when we reflect on Chicago’s vast cultural landscape and the many Chicago artists working hard within it. To offer our readers more news and insights this season, we were busy over the summer adding more editorial content and strengthening the links between print and online platforms. We are using QR codes - those black and white barcode boxes - in our magazine for the first time. Founded in 1983 Chicago Gallery News has always been a nimble publication, adapting with the times, but the changes have come particularly fast in recent years; in this issue, you can go from printed page to website while flipping through CGN. Use your smartphone on one of the QR codes to snap to our corresponding online web page. We think you’ll appreciate reading the old fashioned way, while now accessing more content than ever.
This October is the 16th Chicago Artists Month, but our fall lineup of interviews with artists, dealers and collectors reveals the message that Chicago is our wellspring all year long. Hebru Brantley shared his artistic influences and what’s special about being an artist working in Chicago. For the co-directors of EBERSMOORE, Chicago helped them navigate a successful path from cozy apartment space to West Loop gallery. Collectors Jane and Don Hunt found a passion for collecting art by Chicago artists when they moved into an iconic Mies van der Rohe highrise.
When considering our own changes at the magazine, we kept coming back to the things we love about Chicago that, thankfully, stay the same. The way that many of our fellow Americans look forward to Thanksgiving and the 4th of July, in the art world we anticipate the opening of the fall gallery season in September, followed by Chicago Artists Month in October, and SOFA in November. You can almost tell time by the art fairs and openings in Chicago; we’re fortunate to live in a dynamic city that supports many creative endeavors in a single year.
Art Critic Kevin Nance joins us this issue; he starts a conversation about the identity of the Chicago artist throughout history and today, and he spoke with several personalities who know the subject and our city well. We treasure our artists and creative personalities in Chicago. Their perspective on and position in the art world is unique, and their wisdom and hard work is part of what makes Chicago Creativity thrives in Chicago because of support and inspiration not just a nice city, but a dynamite one. from many sides. SOFA (International Sculpture Objects + Functional Art Fair) returns to Navy Pier for its 16th Chicago show, and for the second year they share the floor with the Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art. Last year more than 30,000 attendees came to Festival Hall to see more than 70 galleries from 11 countries, plus 16 dealers in The Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art. This year the fairs will build on last year’s push for high-level curating and the presentation of large-scale work in booths and around the fair. ARTIST INSIGHTS: Hebru Brantley Artist Hebru Brantley is a young Chicagoan on the move. When he’s not busy at work in his studio, creating large, bright canvases, featuring colorful young faces full of expression and personality, he’s out charming people as well as observing them. Brantley is clearly curious as well as social, and he mines his own curiosity to tap into what he sees as representative of his generation. CGN talked to Brantley to find out about the many things, characters, and people who have influenced his work, and what we should anticipate this fall. - GV

Other than that [I’ve been influenced by] lots of science fiction books and movies. You started tagging outside, and then eventually sharpened your skills and brought your graffiti style indoors. What brought about that creative transition? Traditional graffiti held my attention, but only for so long. I got into it because it was easier connecting with this guerilla art form than with artists who I would see only in history books. [Graffiti] definitely taught me a lot about all different kinds of art, in that I grew to understand that I wanted more from the work, and I started to study a lot of the masters. I feel like there are only so many ways you can stylize your name in a wild style. A real artist is about progression and growth, and for me it was a good stepping stone.

Considering the Chicago Artist It wasn’t so long ago that many of us knew, or thought we knew, what the phrase “Chicago artist” meant. The so-called Chicago Imagists leapt to mind—the Monster Roster’s Leon Golub, Nancy Spero and H.C. Westermann; the Hairy Who’s Karl Wirsum, Jim Nutt and Gladys Nilsson; and their immediate followers in major shows at the Hyde Park Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art, notably Ed Paschke and Roger Brown. With careful mentoring and savvy promotion by the likes of Don Baum, Ray Yoshida and Phyllis Kind, the Imagists dominated and, at least for the rest of America, symbolized the Chicago art scene for nearly four decades. Eccentric and streetwise, rooted in surrealism and pop culture, the Imagists were among the brashest bad boys (and girls) of the art world, even as they clung to traditional artistic media—painting in particular—and displayed an enduring obsession with that most elemental form, the human figure.
University of Illinois at Chicago, and by the inherent globalism of the Internet—significant streams of locally produced art seem more attuned to the larger contemporary art world, anchored as always in New York, than to anything indigenous to Chicago. Several of the best-known Chicago-based artists of today, from Inigo Manglano-Ovalle, Dan Peterman and Nick Cave to Tony Tasset, Jeanne Dunning and Dzine, appear largely untethered, in any easily discernable sense of lineage or membership, to the city where they live.

They were never the whole story, of course. As the better-known Hairy Who was mounting a show in Hyde Park in 1968, the South Side also witnessed the formation of a second influential group, the AfriCobra artists— including Murry DePillars, Jeff Donaldson, Barbara Jones-Hogu, Wadsworth Jarrell and Gerald Williams—who helped establish a black aesthetic whose legacy is visible around the nation. Occupying a separate dimension of the same period was the brilliant generation of art photographers associated with László Moholy-Nagy and the IIT Institute of Design, in particular Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan.
Then again, Chicago artists have never been big joiners; instead they’re congenitally iconoclastic, suspicious of schools and movements. In the history of the city’s art scene dating back to the 19th century, the group identity of the Imagists—themselves as diverse a bunch as can be imagined—was more the exception than the rule.

(Even a strong physical connection to Chicago is no sure thing in this regard; was Joan Mitchell, a native of the Windy City who spent the bulk of her career as a second-generation Abstract Expressionist in New York and Europe, a Chicago artist? Conversely, does it matter that Brown, as closely identified with the city as the Chicago-born Paschke, was from Alabama?) A few artists are indivisible from Chicago because they’ve made it one of their primary subjects—the poetic drawingcollages of Tony Fitzpatrick and the abstract cityscapes of William Conger, the latter often referring directly to local topography, are cases in point—but they are increasingly rare. “In Chicago, because there isn’t the glitzy socialite nonsense they have in New York, you have the time and the freedom to hunker down and make your own work, do your own thing,” Fitzpatrick says. “Twenty years ago, what people thought of were the Imagists. Now there are all kinds of things that constitute Chicago art, and I’m really glad that definition has expanded.” Adds Conger: “I’m proud to be a Chicago artist because being here has enabled me to develop my own idea, perhaps encouraged by the openness to the peculiar, the idiosyncratic, the personal, or the outsider.” That isn’t to say, however, that Chicago artists are simply a tribe of mavericks. “There’s something that differentiates Chicago from all other cities, and Chicago imprints that on its citizens, including its

October is Chicago Artists Month Chicago Artists Month 2011: Artful Networks For 16 years the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs has rallied the creative community to host an overwhelming series of events honoring the Chicago artist and engaging the community in multiple neighborhoods and venues. This fall CAM offers 200+ events, and 12 artists are being spotlighted for their work and accomplishments. Hundreds more are participating in tours, lectures, and open studios. Ravenswood ArtWalk: October 1+2 RAW began in 2002 when Judith Roth (President of Chicago Women’s Caucus for Art) sought to involve the talents and diversity of the Ravenswood Corridor for Chicago Artists Month. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, RAW features over 150 artists and many more events. 17
Ask Natalie Question: I’ve seen a ton of outdoor sculptures all over Chicago – how did the city get to have so many, and how do I find out more? Answer: The largest “gallery” in Chicago covers downtown streets, plazas, neighborhoods, parks, CTA stops, libraries and other public buildings. Most of the works you encounter on your daily walk through the city are part of the city’s Public Art Program, featuring more than 100 pieces of sculpture. The history of Chicago public art dates back to 1837, when the city was incorporated. Early pieces include the 1894 Art Institute Lions by Edward Kemeys; Buckingham Fountain (Marcel Francois Loyau, 1927); and Lorado Taft’s Fountain of Time (1922, The Midway Plaisance) to name a few. The current trend of installing non-commemorative sculptures throughout the city began in 1967 with “The Picasso” at the Richard J. Daley Civic Center Plaza. After some initial public controversy, it fostered a cultural renaissance, evoking public interest in the city’s collection of outdoor sculpture as distinguished as its world-class architecture. Among works are those by such renowned artists as Alexander Calder, Joan Miró, Claes Oldenburg, Ellsworth Kelly, Henry Moore, Richard Hunt, Ellen Lanyon – and Millennium Park’s Anish Kapoor and Jaume Plensa. The city’s collection continues to grow through public/private partnerships and the 1978 Chicago City Council ordinance requiring 1.33 percent of construction budgets for new public buildings be allocated to acquiring and commissioning artwork. The ordinance stipulates that at least half the commissions be awarded to Chicago area artists. For program details and an artist application, visit . Collector Conversations: Jane + Don Hunt Jane and Don Hunt have been passionate about collecting work by living Chicago artists since 1991. I wanted to see their collection for myself, and also experience their 15th floor apartment in the classic Mies van der Rohe building at 860 N. Lake Shore Drive, overlooking Lake Michigan. - GV One spring afternoon Don and Jane cheerfully welcomed me at their front door, and we began my tour at the crossroads between Don’s office and the second bedroom with two long, thin abstract paintings by Betty Cleeland, featuring uniform rounds of white, blues, and grays. Her work explores patterns in spatial precepts with geometrical and colorful shapes playing a major role. Don explained, “This is Betty’s corner. The moment we saw her exhibition, we were drawn to this vibrant work illustrating the different look of a city during the day and then during the night.” Just the day before I had enjoyed brunch with Betty, and here I was delighted to find her art visualizations thoughtfully installed in someone’s home.
One artist in particular, William Conger, whom the Hunts commissioned, took the spirit of the apartment, its architect, and a great Chicago writer to heart. In addition to “Betty’s Corner” the Hunts have several clever, personal groupings of artists throughout their apartment. They jointly remarked that they used to be more “Miesian” in their lifestyle, but over time they have happily added more and more art. They moved to 860 N. The Hunts have built many relationships since they began collecting, but the most notable dealer relationship is with Ann and Roy Boyd of Roy Boyd Gallery. Neither Don or Jane came from art collecting families, and neither one has an art background. Don elaborates, “Ann Boyd was our son’s first grade teacher, and one of our first purchases was from the Boyds. When they invited us to their home after we moved into the city, we saw that everything was art – from the coffee table, to the sculpture, to the artwork on the walls. We envisioned our new Chicago home would be one where we too would have a living space where everywhere you looked was art. We also learned from the Boyds to move art around because it becomes ‘new’ with every move. We want to make art the star.” Through the Boyds, the Hunts found artist John Fraser, perhaps the signature artist of their collection. Fraser’s work is unmistakably important to Don and Jane; his work is found in many variations throughout the

apartment – from collars, to wood and steel, to works on paper. And, of course has his own corner. Fraser is considered a Minimalist, but also a romantic who wants the viewer to feel and reflect on his creations. His own father was a shirt maker, and he took some of the lessons and old world craft he learned as an observant child into the context for his collar works. Fraser’s collars are found in multiple installations in the apartment - filling a large section of wall, as well as installed in a series of angular metal boxes. Don joked, “We like to think of these collars as bankers’ collars. The sharper the point on the collar, the higher up the ladder, and the less likelihood of the banker nodding ‘yes.’”

Regarding the few pieces they have bought independently, “those pieces have been passed on to our children or eliminated,” adds Jane. It’s not because one person dislikes a piece selected by the other, but independent purchases don’t encompass the shared experi-
ence and mutual decision, which is part of the fun. The Hunts explain that they don’t collect for investment. “If a piece goes up in value, that’s great, but we’re not keeping track, and we don’t buy for that reason,” says Don while showing me a pair of wooden sphere sculptures on the floor created by John Fraser. Characteristically meticulous, Fraser crafted a long, slim holder with two wooden heart insets, placed tip to tip. The Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP) at Columbia College appointed Natasha Egan, its current Assoc. Director, to the position of Director. Rod Slemmons becomes Curator at Large + Director of Special Projects in Columbia’s Office of Academic Research. Former School of the Art Institute of Chicago Faculty Member + Alumnus LeRoy Neiman and his wife, Alumna Janet Byrne Neiman, made a $5 million gift to SAIC to help create a new student center, named the LeRoy Neiman Center, within 37 S. Wabash. The University of Chicago announced the creation of the Richard and Mary L. Gray Center for Arts + Inquiry. The Grays’ $5 million gift to the University supports enhancing education, promotes collaboration, + fosters creative innovation.
Bridge Gallery of Contemporary Art and Adornments is new to us from Pilsen East. The bustling art center Lacuna Artists Lofts features a very busy lineup of events. A bit farther north is Elephant Room, Inc. in the 700 block of S. Wabash. In the Fine Arts Building, we have L.H. Selman Gallery and Auction House, featuring the largest display of glass paperweights in the world. On the Mag Mile is Loyola University Museum of Art (LUMA), exhibiting artistic religious and spiritual programming this season. Hotel Palomar joins us on N. State St., partnering with Revolving Collections Gallery to promote artwork by a variety of artists. The northside’s Lillstreet Art Center features classes, events, and studios to visit. 15 Minutes with a Dealer: EBERSMOORE Chicago offers a unique blend of alternative art spaces, apartment galleries, curatorial projects, and many other dynamic, start-up art programs and coalitions. CGN’s Laura Miller caught up with Sara Ebers and Dominic Paul Moore, co-directors of EBERSMOORE, one of the city’s younger, emerging galleries, located in the West Loop / Fulton Market district. The pair shared stories of their apartment-gallery-roots, participation in the inaugural MDW Fair, and the gallery’s plans for the future. - LM
(a gathering of independent art initiatives, spaces, galleries + artist groups from Chicago). How do you think MDW compared to other more established art fairs, like Art Chicago? We enjoyed being a part of the MDW Fair. It was great to see the excitement of the community, and MDW felt refreshing from other fairs like Art Chicago/NEXT - there wasn’t as much pressure to sell, and the focus was on Chicago artists, local programs, and other projects. It would be nice to see it on the same weekend as Art Chicago and draw perhaps an even larger crowd. We would also enjoy seeing the fair expand the invitation to other midwestern cities.
Dominic, you’re an artist - what are the challenges, benefits, or strains of balancing the administrative side of running the CGN: EBERSMOORE began as an apartment gallery not long ago. Tell us how you gallery with your own studio practice? DPM: It has its moments; it’s a love-hate got started, and about the transition to sorta thing. Lately we have taken on a few where you are now. How do you choose the artists and work you exhibit? We follow the careers of artists we show for a year or two before we decide on an exhibition. We are attracted to artists whose work is underrepresented, especially here in Chicago. We give our artists full reign of the space and encourage them to experiment.

The most rewarding thing is having a place where people see something current in the art world; it’s a place to think and enjoy. Our goal is, and has always been, to show what isn’t quite so ordinary in Chicago. When someone discovers a new artist in our gallery, it is very rewarding. Probably the most challenging part of running the space is separating gallery/home life. We live in the same space as the gallery, so it is easy to forget to put things on hold and take a day off. But that can be a good thing at times too. DPM: We enjoy running the gallery together. We feed off each other's ideas, take on our own roles and pick up the other's ends when needed. With my being an artist, Sara's art history background and our experiences working for galleries, we have found a good balance for our program. Being new parents keeps things extra interesting, but our 10-month old daughter has become an important part of the gallery as well. What’s in the future for EBERSMOORE? We would like to continue growing, like we have for the past two years. As always, we anticipate our upcoming exhibitions. We have nine artists on our roster now and are looking forward to expanding. We hope to continue a compelling program and enjoy the company of those who see our shows. We recently started working with Chicago artist Ann Toebbe and are really excited to be working with her. She will be one of the last artists to exhibit in the MCA’s 12x12 program this September.

Artist Janet McKenzie has committed her life's work to creating paintings that celebrate all people, particularly people of color and women. Her work challenged the dominant iconic imagery of the Holy Family and the Saints as being of European descent. 14 paintings by McKenzie will be included in the exhibition, organized by the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University.
