Speech Day 2013 Speech Day, on Saturday 6th July, was a sunny and successful day. The preacher in the morning services was The Revd Rose Hudson Wilkin, a charismatic lady tipped as possible contender to become one of the first female bishops in the Church of England. Currently she is Chaplain to the Speaker of the House of Commons.
The Guest of Honour was Old Chigwellian Alderman Neil Redcliffe who gave out the prizes and made an inspiring speech. On the Wednesday before Speech Day, the School held a service for the Middle Sixth leavers which was followed by a party on the Swallow lawn for pupils, their parents and staff. We shall miss all the students of the year group of 2013 and we are proud of what they have achieved during their time at Chigwell. n

GCSE Results Although nationally the percentage of top grades has declined, our pupils and teachers have been celebrating some of the best GCSE results ever.
41% of all grades awarded were at A* which is six times the national average and made A* the most common grade gained by Chigwell pupils this year. Of the year group of 71 students, 19 achieved seven A* grades or more. n
A Level Results The percentage of A* grades achieved this year was over double the national average and nearly half of all grades achieved were A* or A grade. Armed with their results, many students will be moving on to a whole variety of prestigious university courses, including six to Oxford and Cambridge. Callum Fleming achieved four A* grades and will be studying engineering at Cambridge. Luthien Liu achieved five A* grades which
enables her to study natural sciences at Cambridge whilst twins Rachel and Jessica Maton both achieved the same results although in slightly different subjects. Rachel will be studying history at Oxford with a choral scholarship, whilst Jessica will be at Cambridge studying classics. Oliver Albert also achieved a choral scholarship with his place to study engineering at Cambridge and Qinning Lou’s results confirmed her place studying mathematics at Oxford. Headmaster Michael Punt said: “We are naturally very

proud when students achieve results of the highest level but we are also delighted when individuals work really hard, fulfill their particular potential and achieve the goals that they have set themselves. Many of the students celebrating today have contributed a huge amount to the life of Chigwell in a whole variety of areas. We wish them every success and happiness for the future, and look forward to hearing about all that they achieve in their lives beyond school. n

Keeping Up with Digital Technology Year 10 student, Payaam Kapur, was one of the 30 young people invited to a special event to celebrate the official launch of ‘Make Things Do Stuff’ at the Roundhouse in Camden on 30th May. Led by Mozilla, Nesta and Nominet Trust, this nationwide campaign aims to educate at least 100,000 young people not only to use digital technologies, but to create them. Many UK businesses have been invited to back the campaign, which is set to teach 100,00 young people digital skills.
To transform children from consumers to creators, MTDS wishes to unite organisations that try to get kids excited about IT into a single network. It already signed up dozens of partners from large corporations like Facebook and O2, down to small grassroots organisations. Payaam was involved in a workshop for creating digital content for music. The event was attended by the Chancellor George Osborne who said the campaign will complement the STEM education initiatives launched by the government. n

Ariana Lui’s Winning Story A short story written by Year 9 student, Ariana Lui, The Dream Asylum, made it to the top 25 shortlist in the Chris Evans Breakfast Show competition held in May, ‘500 Words 2013’. The story was also read on Radio 4. Ariana with Miranda Richardson...
Although Ariana did not win the top three finals’ prizes in
her category, she should be enormously proud of herself, as over 90,000 entries were received from children all over the UK. In addition, Ariana met many interesting personalities such as Miranda Richardson, Chris Evans and Oliver Phelps (who was in the Harry Potter movies), Michael Ball, Michael Palin, newsreader Susanna Reid and Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood. n

DRAMA
‘All the world’s a stage.’ — William Shakespeare, As You Like It In the Trinity Term, the KS2 plays were a series of devised pieces created by the pupils themselves and directed by Mr Maingot. This was a delightful opportunity for the younger pupils at Chigwell to entertain parents, friends and staff in this lighthearted look at Stories from Far Away Places. The Junior School Play, Alice in Wonderland, followed swiftly after this and was a great triumph for all concerned. Congratulations to Miss Janey Foster and her cast. Lastly, the Scholars’ Play, The Amorous Ambassador, a comic look at life in diplomacy, brought a comic finish to the year’s extra-curricular drama, directed by the Lower Sixth Drama Scholars, Matthew Scudder and Carrie Pollock. Academic Drama has seen four productions for GCSE, including a range of modern and traditional playwrights as well as the pupils’ own devised work. In addition to this, there have been three A level evenings of drama including both scripted and devised work. Almost all pupils achieved A or A* for their practical work at GCSE and the A2 work this year was all at A* level. n

HEALTHY EATING
Ready, Steady, Cook! Food and fun were on the menu on Wednesday 23rd April when Chigwell’s Catering Company, Chartwells, organised a ‘ready, steady, cook’ morning as part of the school ongoing healthy eating campaign.
The green team members, with Mr Paul Fletcher, Alex Sugar and Arabella Tish, were triumphant with their ginger and pork infused patties with peppers and spicy stir-fried noodles. The red team, with Mr Matthew Slocombe, Saagar Chana and Ayesha Patel, also produced a mouthwatering dish. Chartwell’s adjudicating chef, and the presenter for the day, was Mr Tim Elks. The morning session concluded with a talk about healthy eating and all things nutrition by Ms Meg Longworth. n 08 | 09
MUSIC
‘Without music, life would be a mistake.’ — Friedrich Nietzsche One of the strongest features of the music making at Chigwell is the enthusiasm and ease with which the vast majority in the School take to the stage. This is no more evident than in the Junior School. The First and Second Form Choirs continue to raise the bar, as does the ever growing and ever popular ‘Stringles’. The newly formed Third and
Fourth Form Glee Club has promulgated a new style of performance, bringing with it an ideal modern commercial appeal incorporating musical theatre. The tea-time Prom Concerts produced for us by each year group (LI to Removes), under the leadership and guidance of Miss Felicity Leach, have been influential opportunities to motivate our young performers. The LI Prom Concert, the last in the

series, saw no fewer than 50 different musical pieces being performed, to a supportive, friendly, audience of peers, parents, staff and friends. The Young Musician of the Year competition adjudicated by Mr Jonathan Lipton of the LSO, conjured up some fine performances throughout the day and, like the Prom series, will have embedded in the pupils a further understanding and desire to succeed. Yasmin Antoniou’s mature musical
command allied with her technical prowess was enough to win the Junior category, with Rowan Jones taking the Highly Commended prize. In the Senior category, Katie Marshall won the prize of Highly Commended for her commanding technique and mature interpretation, whilst Heather Cook’s sheer virtuosity and brilliant musicianship on the treble and descant recorders won her the overall Young Musician of the Year 2013. n

‘A picture is worth a thousand words.’ — Napoleon Bonaparte
High Profile Posters If you stroll past the National Portrait Gallery onto Charing Cross Road you may come across one of London’s latest and – dare we say it – greatest art exhibitions. The dazzling designs on display are the work of Year 9 students Henry Tang, Yash Chopra, Jack Breyer, Sonal Ohrie and Emma Tilbrook.
The five students with Art & Graphic Design teacher, Miss Sharon Wales, and Mr John Wales, CEO Encoretickets.co.uk
Senior School Art and Graphic Design teacher Sharon Wales was asked by theatrepeople. com to submit some of the graphic designs created by her pupils on the theme of theatre and street art to decorate one of the entrances to one of their ticketing outlets in Charing Cross Road, in the heart of the West End. The building is highly visible to both road users and pedestrians and attracts over 100,000 visitors each year. The five winning street murals were unveiled on 3rd July when the winners were also taken to see a top West End show. Well done to these highly talented graphic design students who will certainly go on to do even more great work in the future. n

Winning Design for MINI A design created by Imogen Padwick was selected to feature on the roof of a MINI car. More than 250 Chigwell pupils entered the competition organised by Sytner Chigwell and our Art Department and both school staff and the judges from Sytner Chigwell
were amazed by the range and standard of entries. Each of the different themes was interpreted with great individuality, flair and skill and selecting an overall winner was a very difficult task. After much deliberation, designs by Jordan Cohen, Imogen Padwick, Poppy Bradley, and Greg Garland were shortlisted,

Art & Design and Design & Technology Summer Exhibition The 2013 Art and Design and Design and Technology Summer Exhibition 2013 opened to the public on Thursday 4th July. Parents, staff, pupils and friends of the school attended the opening and it was a really fantastic occasion.
Visitors had the opportunity to view examples of art, design and D&T work made by pupils from all year groups in the school’s art gallery. The quality of the work on show was stunning and the exhibition reflected the strength of the creative subjects at the school. The range of work on display was incredibly diverse. Visitors could see examples of paintings that had been influenced by Picasso, mixed
media T-shirts that had been inspired by Punk, and there was even one piece of art that incorporated living snails. The GCSE, AS and A2 groups have once again not only been able to make their exam and coursework projects to an outstanding standard, but each project was highly personal and demonstrated, very convincingly, the individual flair and talent of our pupils. n

The ‘Decorative Decoupage’ workshop
In May, Mrs Tilbrook organised an art workshop, ‘Decorative Decoupage’ run by Emma Collins, for 14 local prep and primary school teachers. The work produced,
mirrors embellished with beads and sequins, was wonderful. Mrs Tilbrook then taught the workshop to our Year 5 pupils, who took to this method of French decoration, tres bien!
During activities week the Year 5 pupils were lucky enough to have a cartoon workshop run by Alan Cassey, a storyboard artist who has written and illustrated for Danger Mouse and Count Duckula comics.
Year 6 pupils took part in a one-day workshop, Exotic India, inspired by Indian art. Every pupil made eight beautifully embellished ‘fimo’ tiles, which were then baked in an oven and arranged onto our Purple Panther, with stunning results. n

Again this year we have seen an increase in students wanting to complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Bronze level expedition in the New Forest
Fifty-seven of the Lower Fifth joined at Bronze level at the beginning of the year, their expeditions included practising navigation around the wilds of Essex and completing their assessed expedition in the New Forest during activity week. Also during the year, they have been working on their other section which includes learning a new skill, undertaking some physical activity and volunteering their time to help people or an organisation in need. Twenty-eight students decided to continue their award at the Silver level, with approximately half opting to canoe for their expedition and the others deciding to walk. The expedition on foot was in the South Downs for training and Yorkshire Dales for assessment, and the canoe expedition was completed on the River Stort at Harlow with the final assessed trip on the River Thames in Oxford. The Gold participants have included six Lower and Middle Sixth pupils completing their expeditions in adverse weather conditions over the October half term in Snowdonia and they all passed their assessed fiveday expedition at the end of Trinity term in Scotland. n

The U11s won the Bancroft’s 6-a-side tournament with captain Ben Chillingworth and Joe Williams (both district players ) dominating the batting. Golf Golf continues to be very strong at Chigwell and we have again increased the number of players representing the School. This again was a very successful year with 12 matches played and only one defeat. Our Junior and Senior teams played Forest School twice each throughout the year and we won all four fixtures. In the latest fixture with Forest, Joshua Banfield scored an impressive level par gross at Chigwell Golf Club. The staff won their 4 ball too! However, the School didn’t manage to beat the Old Chigwellians’ this year, losing 2.5 matches to 1.5. Congratulations should go to Harry Butler (5 handicap), who won the Chigwell Open 2013, scoring an impressive 2 over par gross at Chigwell Golf

Tennis Girls’ tennis has been very successful. The seniors recorded strong victories over both Forest and Bancroft’s, only dropping a couple of games throughout both matches. The middle school girls have followed the example set by the Sixth Formers and had some competitive matches against the same opposition, coming out on top. Both the boys’ U13 and U15 teams were entered in to the Aegon sponsored national tennis competition run by the LTA. The initial matches

Hanna Raises £6,400 for Local School Junior School pupil, Hanna Johal, has raised an astonishing £6,400, including six Apple tablets, to help children with learning difficulties at a nearby school after friends and colleagues responded generously to her amazing gesture. Oak View School in Loughton has put the cash towards a new climbing frame, as well as iPads for classroom learning. The musthave gadgets have become increasingly useful in helping disabled people communicate, assisting with learning and play. Hanna’s older brother Aaron, 12, suffers from autism and attends Oak View. When
asked what she wanted for her birthday, Hanna, insisted off her own back that friends and relatives must donate money to help her brother’s classmates. The iPad – as well as being light and portable – has proven to be an especially useful communication tool for young people with autism. It provides a way to express themselves through words and images; it can be used to teach them about everyday scenarios and give them more independence. Mr Simon James, Head of Junior School, said: ‘Hanna set up a stall and raised funds and awareness of her cause through selling various items during break and lunch time to the staff and children at the school. We are proud of Hanna’s beliefs and achievements, her actions go to the heart of the school’s ethos and motto.’ n
