Chigwell Chronicle HEADTEACHER’S NEWS This week has been typically intense with a plethora of achievements and activities in this vibrant school. On Saturday, I had the pleasure of watching the U13 Girls’ netball fixtures against Haileybury. The competition was fierce but fair and the standard of play high. It was interesting to see the games ebb and flow and sides take and relinquish the lead. On a personal level, I think that I am finally beginning to grasp some of the rules! The Pre Prep Science Festival on Tuesday evening was a real success. It was good to see the progression of science from Pre Prep all the way through to the end of KS2. The talks and in particular the photographs of the children enjoying their learning were excellent and it was absolutely clear that science is a strength of the school. The Forest Schools Programme talk by Mrs Rawlings also showed how we can use the beautiful grounds around us to enhance the experience of learning for the pupils throughout the school. I know that our Lower Ones loved their woodland lessons last week. We would like to expand this programme to all of Key stage Two in the future. I would like to thank all the Pre Prep teachers and Mrs Gibbs for their welcome and the sheer quality of the presentations. I would also like to thank Mrs Botham for showcasing KS2 Science so well. The Lower Two Parents’ Evening of Wednesday was really useful and I hope that the parents felt that this was the case. I am pleased that our 11+ transition process has been clarified and hope that this has reduced the anxiety of parents in this regard. As always, I enjoyed the opportunity to talk to many of you about the progress of your children. If you have any concerns about the transition at 11+ then please contact us in school. Mrs Tomsett will be available next week to see the parents of the children she teaches. Since September, I have been running a small scale ‘Quiz Club’ for LI and UI pupils. Yesterday, I attended my first Quiz Club fixture, an area heat at Forest School. We had chosen four pupils, one from each year in Key Stage Two, (as it says in the rules) and for over an hour, our children engaged in an enjoyable and interesting General Knowledge quiz against seven other teams. We finished a creditable fourth (beating Bancroft’s!) and I was really proud of our team - Asia, Aarush, Edward and Isabel. Thursday’s assembly was largely devoted to celebrating the many achievements of our pupils. There was lots of sport, with our U13 Netball team finishing as runners up in the IAPS East Regional Tournament, and the individual accomplishments of Johnny and Hilary that you can see later in this issue. Then, too, Mrs Botham displayed some excellent artistic work that had been entered for her Art and Design Competition, with prizes for the best. Finally, we had Suraj’s bronze award for his performance in the Primary Maths Challenge. Just another week of high achievement at Chigwell School both academic, sporting and cultural. Thursday also saw the BBC School Report Live Day and I know that our pupils have been preparing really hard for this. The experience of being a journalist and investigating and interviewing potential stories and people is really valuable. I was interviewed myself a couple of times and once filmed, somewhat bizarrely, just working at my desk. There were many good stories researched and, in one of them, our older pupils had the opportunity to interview Nick Clegg, which must have been fascinating. I must thank all the children for their work and of course to their helpers among the staff, Mr Ennis and especially to Mrs Pewsey for all her tireless work in running and managing this event. This Saturday’s sport is again dominated by some U13/U12 netball, this time against St Edmunds. Have a restful weekend. Andy Stubbs

There was a real buzz of activity in the school this Thursday as our school reporters were all hard at work gathering stories for the BBC School Report live news day! Please follow the link below to see our news programme: http://www.chigwell-school.org/news/ Pages/BBC-School-Report.aspx Molly (IIIBM), Evie (IIIFE) and Olivia (IIIPI) interviewed local Conservative MP Eleanor Laing on their topic of ‘The Earnings Cap’ where they investigated earnings and taxes.

Ben and Jake (IIIFE) carried out interviews at an innovation fair in Surrey on their topic of ‘Future Innovation’.

UII English Last week in English, UII were looking at sea poetry. We were inspired by these images to write our own descriptive paragraphs. Next week we will be writing our own poems inspired by the sea. Black. Darkness all around. Out of the gloomy shadows, the barnacle-infested plane lay limply on the scattered sand. Its propeller sinking slowly, inch-by-inch into the glistening, golden sand beneath it. Fish, big and small, darted speedily in and out of the air-craft. Seaweed flowed in rhythm with the waves, like a musical dance in the depths of the ocean. A deep, dark blue tide whispered across the banks of the sea, like a continuous hurricane. By Isabel UIICJ

Crystal clear water, calm and quiet, made no movement; as if it were a statue. The debris of what seemed to be an aeroplane lay piled up, rusty and ancient. A submerged army plane, with sticks for propellers, was never to be seen again. It was enveloped by colourful coral and even more. No sound was to be made. No movement was seen. The dull, rusty metal was camouflaged. Invisible. By Anya UIICJ In the deep depths of the cerulean ocean sat a barnacleinfested vessel. His days of fighting against astronomical waves were over. He had finally lost the battle. Enveloped in bronze rust, scattered with minuscule limpets, the desolate boat was indented into the undulating terrain of the ocean bed. An array of tropical, inquisitive fish circled and roamed through the ancient gaps of the ship. By Amelie UIICJ

The colossal underwater tank was camouflaged with black, oil-smothered water. It was desolate, isolated and deserted, except for the silhouettes of the fish swimming above. While prowling sharks skidded through the water, the debris of the ancient battle tank sits on a coral throne; the only thing left down in the depths of this sea. Musky water has settled around it like mist on a monstrous, brutal day. The tank’s scorched sides glistened cruelly in the light, jeering at passing fish. By Karolina-Sabah UIICJ

SCOUTS HIKE! Last week, the Scouts went on a hike around Hainault Forest and part of the London Loop. It was a gloriously sunny evening, but the scouts still managed to find lots of mud and puddles! We also had several close encounters with horses and cows. A great expedition.

Johnny LIH took party in the London Fields TC Duathlon on Sunday 12th March 2017 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Johnny is a regional skier and it is a common fitness discipline for ski racers during the warmer months to take part in Duathlons - run, cycle, run, with inclines. Johnny managed a brilliant performance and won the silver medal. Congratulations Johnny!

Very well done to the U13’s who were runners up in the East Regional Round of the IAPS netball competition last Friday 3rd March at Felsted School. The U11’s and U12’s also competed very well, so congratulations to the three teams taking part! U13

Hilary (UIIPG) played for the Old Loughtonian U12A team in the Essex Cup last weekend and they finished silver medallists, losing the competition final narrowly 1-0 to a very good Blue Hornets Felsted team, that game being their only defeat of the day. Hilary herself scored two goals directly from short corners during the competition. As a result the girls are now off to play the U12 East of England finals in Norfolk on Sunday 9th April (the top two teams in the Essex Cup tournament go through to represent the whole of Essex in that competition). Max (UIT) also played at OLHC last weekend for the U10 team and they too were successful in finishing 2nd in their group so they will also go on to represent Essex in the Regional Hockey finals in Norfolk on April 9th. Congratulations to both Hilary and Max and Amelie (UIICJ) and Kitty (IIIPI) who also played in some of the other OLHC teams at the weekend.
