Activities Week Pupils from Lower One upwards were involved in a variety of activities as part of activities week which aims to provide opportunities and experiences outside of the usual curriculum. Some of the main activities included visits to care homes, an expedition to the Lake District, an activities holiday on the Isle of Wight and camping on Mersea Island.

Speech Day and the Summer Ball

Speech Day was a happy celebration of achievements from the past year. Guest of Honour, Mr Michael Pruss O.C. studied at Royal Holloway and Bedford College, London before moving to California where he is now Senior Vice President for Scott Free, the film and TV company owned by Sir Ridley Scott, where he is responsible for all creative aspects of the company.

year, days before her sixteenth birthday. The first winner of this award was James Harrington who has fundraised tirelessly for Haven House Children’s Hospice. Father Simon Paul also dedicated a bench in memory of Grace.

Over Friday and Saturday there were three services for the different sections of the School, held in St Mary’s Church Chigwell. The preacher at the service for the Pre Prep and youngest Junior pupils was Reverend Gill Hopkins, Vicar of Holy Innocents, High Beach, and Chaplain to Epping Forest. At the other services the preacher was Tony Miles, Deputy Superintendent Minister of Methodist Central Hall, Westminster, media chaplain and broadcaster. The celebrations ended with the traditional Summer Ball. As always this was well attended by parents, friends, and those pupils who leave Chigwell this summer.

Karen and Peter Boxall presented the Grace Boxall Award for Commitment to Charity, in memory of Grace who tragically passed away in September last

Middle Sixth Leavers’ Party It was good to bid farewell to the Middle Sixth leavers and their parents on Monday evening. They gathered for photographs, had a service in Chapel followed by a bbq in New Hall and on the Swallow Lawn. If students have not done so, please could they email me their contact email address which will then go in the Development Office database. We try to stay in contact with all Old Chigwellians.

The Scholars’ Play The Scholars’ Play, “Plunder” by Ben Travers (1921) rounded the year off in true style. Once again, comedy was the name of the game and very much spearheaded by a double act consisting of William Lord as the bumbling buffoon, D’Arcy Tunks, and Harry Benjamin as the suave Freddie. Beautifully costumed and intelligently stage-managed, this was a remarkably smooth realisation of this vintage Aldwych

Farce

that

has,

despite

everything, somehow stood the test of time and remains a highly entertaining bit of fun. The final twist of the show certainly fooled everyone. Well done to Drama Scholars Bethany Hartland and Sarah Chamberlain for acting and directing so well; despite a sprained wrist and much last minute panic, they pulled off a great show!

Volunteering Opportunities An Old Chigwellian has been in touch to say that the company she works for has connections with a charity called Operation Smile (please see link below for more information): http://www.operationsmile.org.uk/

If Chigwell pupils are looking to volunteer for a charity over the summer or even during weekends in term time, please do encourage them to get in touch.

Friends of Chigwell – A message from the Chair, Mrs Purnima Sen What a year it has been for the Friends of Chigwell! When the new team took over in September, we knew that we had a hard act to follow and so it was all hands on deck straight away. We had a few thoughts about what we wanted to do and how much revenue we wanted to make, but we also did not want to lose sight of our aim to bring Chigwell families together. We were also keen on making “giving back” an important agenda item and not making it all about raising funds all the time.

and the new FoC Jazz night compered by Mr Bradley Walsh which now threatens to become an annual summer event too. Both events raised a total of £4,500. In conclusion, I am delighted to say that the FoC have raised £37,131 since September 2013, which is higher than we have ever raised in the past. This has made us a profit of £15,693, of which we have donated £12,341 back to the School for various projects including a new 3D printer, Pre Prep staging, drama centre lights, a green house and finally a new grand piano.

The year started beautifully with a welcome to all parents on the patio of the beautiful new Pre Prep with a Beetle Drive event. We also served our usual fayre at the inter-school annual football and netball event. In November we had our annual firework night making a profit of over £6,000. This was followed by the usual Christmas school discos and the Christmas Fayre. 2014 took off with the Easter egg hunt in Pre Prep, which was hugely popular. We also managed to have a couple of theatre trips to the west end – Billy Elliott and Wicked! Following this we held film nights at the Pre Prep with Frozen and Despicable Me 2 in the Junior School. Finally, last month we had the most successful sports day ever

However, none of this would have been possible without all your help. The FoC members are, of course, a triumph with their fantastic efforts, energy, time and uncompromising commitment, and without them we would certainly not be so successful. We cannot forget teachers and the support staff who help with printing, supplying, moving, providing relentlessly to all our demands. And last, but certainly not the least, a big thank you to all parents of the School who contribute a huge amount by supporting our events – you make the Friends of Chigwell the successful fund raising charity that we are.

Wind In The Willows Over one hundred pupils performed their version of “The Wind in the Willows to a packed auditorium for three nights. Pupils ranged from 7 to 13 years old and put on a fantastic two hour show that was notable for its marvellous costumes, make up and innovative set design.

Summer Concert The musicians have had a very busy few days but this culminated in an excellent summer concert yesterday evening. This provided a superb opportunity to celebrate all that they have contributed to the musical life of the School and there were fine performances from the Wind Band, Big Band, Fusion Group and the Middle Sixth soloists.

Staff News As we reach the end of term we say good bye to a number of colleagues. We wish Mrs Linda Joughin a long and happy retirement after eight years at Chigwell and Ms Susie Crossland leaves us following the birth of Miller. We also say goodbye to Miss Sarah Butler who has been with us for the past year as our Graduate Assistant in the PE and Games department, and Miss Alexandra Moss who has been covering maternity leave in the Junior School, as has Miss Nicola Sullivan in the geography department. Miss Helen Evans leaves the Pre Prep to teach elsewhere and Mr Matthew Slocombe who leaves the D&T department in order to study for a Masters degree in psychology. We send them all our very best wishes.

The School Shop The School Shop will be closed for stock taking from 9th to 18th July inclusive. From 21st July to 11th August, it will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 3pm and then from 18th August it will be open daily from 10am to 3pm. From Monday 1st September the shop will be open, as usual, from 12noon to 5pm each day.

Uniform It is important that pupils wear their school uniform smartly when they return for the start of the new academic year. In particular, girls’ kilts need to reach the knee.

10

And finally, a party of Senior School pupils are travelling to Ecuador for four weeks and we look forward to hearing about this fantastic adventure when they return. I hope all Chigwell families have a very happy summer and I hope the pupils taking public exams gain the results that they deserve in August. With best wishes Yours sincerely

Michael Punt
