Dear Readers:
With so much of what will happen next falling in the “unknown” category, our spring issue of Child Guide has been in a holding pattern. But with Mother’s Day on the horizon, and an article planned to salute some very special people who help young mothers, I decided to offer an online edition until such a time as we are able to figure out whether publishing for Summer Camps & Programs makes sense. Given the “phase-in” plans I’ve read, there’s serious doubt in my mind that families will get relief from spending the majority of their days together. My thoughts have been with those of you who are confined duriig this time. I’m so very thankful to be considered an “essential worker” at my regular job and that my children are old enough to be out of school. The challenges many of you are facing are beyond comprehension. I am working from home a couple days a week – without children in the house doing online learning – and, with the exception of a dog who decides to bark at inopportune times, it’s been fairly easy. Stay safe and sane, and do your best to be patient with your families. My admiration is sent to all mothers – young, old and inbetween, as we celebrate Mother’s Day! Hoping for a summer in which we may safely gather and enjoy a few good times to allow us to feel less isolated.

Living Healthier Mealtime tips for families

or families used to eating out, to getting fast food or take out, staying at home for meals is a big challenge. Here are some tips to make mealtime more fun and nutritious. Start with these guiding principles: make it simple, make it fun, let everyone get involved. Let’s start with getting everyone involved. First, when you go shopping you should be armed with a good shopping list which comes from planning meals ahead of time. So, sit down with the whole family and plan as many meals as you can afford to purchase ahead of time, up to two weeks of meals is a great start. Don’t forget to include breakfast, lunch and dinner. And keep in mind that if you make enough of something for dinner it can become lunch the next day too. A good example would look like this: start with a dinner of roast chicken and baked potatoes with a salad. After dinner, remove all the chicken then take the carcass and put it into a soup pot with some onions and celery to make broth. You can cook it 2 hours or more and make a delicious broth. That broth can be the base for a soup or stew later in the week. While you are baking potatoes, throw a few extra in the oven and the next day lunch could be a baked potato bar with those potatoes and some fixings, including the leftover chicken. Keep it simple means just that, use a few ingredients like fresh or frozen vegetables, a simple protein and a side like baked potatoes, rice or pasta to stretch your dollars. Make it fun with ideas

S HARON Z OUMBARIS like breakfast for dinner, or an indoor picnic. Also, preparation should be a family affair. Kids can help tear lettuce or wash vegetables or shred cheese. Ethnic foods like crepes or tacos can include the culture from that country. Try having the youngest children color a flag or draw a picture of something they think represents that meal’s featured country. How about letting different family members decide on “dinner music”, especially teens? The important part is to make everyone feel included and to experience new things. Or play games at the table, like tell two truths and a lie about that evening’s dinner and have everyone guess which is which. What would your kids say if you had them play with their food? Ask them to arrange the salad into a face on the plate or make shapes out of pizza dough. Finally, use the time at the table for good conversation. Parents can share happy, positive stories about family members who live far away like grandparents and favorite relatives. Share stories about overcoming adversity or past adventures. Together as a family everyone can make plans, tell jokes or share things they are grateful for, especially in these trying times. While it might feel odd to sit down together as a family, the time spent will become a treasured memory.

Adventures in Physical Distancing BY JEANNE-MARIE

nquisitive kids enjoy adventures in the world around us. Sometimes circumstances force us to look for ways to have adventures at home. When coronavirus forced us to become homebound, it was hard to explain to Gabriel how we couldn’t eat inside restaurants or go to movies or visit other amusements or places like we would like. But while things were shutting down and options being limited, it was time to think about what we could still do and make the most of the situation. One of the important things while you are navigating your way through a crisis is to stay calm and rational for the sake of your children. They are looking to you as an example of how to behave and react. If you can’t keep it together in difficult times, that’s what they will remember. If you complain how bored you are and how unfair it all is, they will start to mimic what they hear from you. So even if you don’t feel it, fake it until you make it. And then get creative. I already homeschool Gabriel, so learning at home was nothing new for him. To supplement that, I am always looking for ways to teach him outside of his normal curriculum. With the extra time at home, I decided it was time to start sharing one of my hobbies with him and teach him what I know about photography. I would have loved to have learned the proper ways to manipulate a camera and the settings at his age, and this is knowledge he can use throughout life. Think Page 4

about your hobbies. What do you enjoy that would be good to teach right now? Could you teach your kids crochet or scrapbooking? Do you know how to sew or have a love of gardening? Do you like whipping up creative dishes in the kitchen? Have you studied any arts, dance, or musical instruments that you can share with your children? Now is a great time to expand their knowledge and skills and potentially give them a new hobby. Think of other ways to make time at home fun. In Gabriel’s case, he loves my complete attention while we play card games and board games. What else do you have around your house that you could be using more? Maybe you have a puzzle you’ve been meaning to assemble or a craft that is still in its packaging. Blanket forts sound simple, but sometimes the simplest things are kids’ favorites. Sidewalk chalk, bubbles, and a hose may also seem basic, but often kids are happiest with these easy activities. Maybe it is time to organize your home and do some spring cleaning. Get your kids to help with some of that, and look for ways to make it fun like turning it into a game or contest. Perhaps it is a good time for them to look through their toys for things that they might like to donate or put into a yard sale. I know Gabriel loves washing cars, and maybe your kids will enjoy helping you soap up and rinse off your cars. Find

ways to reward them for their hard work in helping put things in order. Make sure you take time to explore the outdoors too. Go on walks for fresh air, and go to the park if you can. Even when the visitors’ centers are closed, the national battlefields are still open to walk and get some sunshine. You could even organize a scavenger hunt outdoors for kids to find things wherever you go. I challenge Gabriel to find and take interesting pictures when we go out. During times like these, kids are missing their friends at school and playdates. Look for ways to encourage them to be social even if they have to maintain a physical distance. Kids can use Zoom or FaceTime to see each other and talk. They could make handmade cards and mail them to friends and family. You might explore Facebook Messenger for kids to see if it is a good fit for your child. If friends live in the neighborhood, take a walk past their house and talk to them from a safe distance. Now is also a time when there is more online content than I have ever seen before for children to learn about and see things they might not normally see. There are musicians offering free online concerts and artists and dance teachers offering free classes. Museums, zoos, and aquariums are sharing online content and streaming events and lessons. NASA has made their photo galleries available for browsing. Virtual tours of exotic places around the world are available through Google Arts and Culture. Celebrities, such as Dolly Parton, are reading stories to children online. There are a lot of options at your fingertips. One of the ideas I love is to make a quarantine bucket list of all the things you would like to see, finish, and learn during the quarantine. Have fun checking them off, but at the same time, do not feel like you have to be a cruise director every day. It’s okay to have days that are quieter with movies and independent play time. The point is not to wear yourself out keeping busy, but to think about how you can enjoy this time together that you didn’t expect. Taking a break and having quiet days to connect is important too. While the coronavirus pandemic is not something that anyone wanted, your kids will remember what you did together and how you made the most of the experience. Use this as an opportunity to give them unique memories they might not have otherwise had.

Help and Hope for Teen Mothers
A

n unplanned pregnancy would throw life off track for anyone, but a teenage mother would be even more vulnerable, especially those without a strong support network. Pressley Ridge, a non-profit who has provided foster care services in the mid-Atlantic for almost two centuries, offers a program to help young moms and their children up to age four. The Pressley Ridge Parent Child Foster Care (PCFC) program matches pregnant teenagers and young parents between the ages of 12-21 with nurturing and supportive foster parents who have received specialized training. The foster parents equip the young mothers with skills to learn how to be great parents and ultimately transition successfully to independent living with their children. Pressley Ridge oversees the program and provides assessments, clinical services, in-home support, and crisis intervention, as well as training and resources for the foster parents. Parenting lessons are conducted within the foster home, and fathers are welcome to participate in the training. I recently had the honor of speaking with Jewel Clark who has served passionately as a dedicated foster mom with Pressley Ridge for over 20 years. While Jewel originally began her service fostering teenagers, she has switched to participating in the PCFC program. Not one to shy away from teenagers, Jewel was quick to say how she feels the young moms are the easiest group to foster, and she would like to dispel the myth that teenagers are difficult to assist. Jewel says when they are approached with love and sincerity and realize they are in a safe environment with consistent rules, the young mothers open up with trust and become family. In Jewel’s case, she mentions that it also helps that she has a strong, supportive family of her own. Jewel’s daughter and grandchildren have welcomed the young mothers into the family and even enjoy their company on large family annual vacations. From someone who has walked in the shoes of a single-parent herself, Jewel has a lot of empathy for the young mothers and recognizes their struggles. Jewel prepares them to have skills in all areas of life. She has helped some finish high school and graduate, while others she has taught how to drive. Basic parenting skills are key to the program, but independent life skills are also critical. Jewel mentioned that sometimes it feels like cramming for a test because there are numerous teachable moments while the teens are in her care. Teenagers with no experience budgeting, grocery shopping, laundry, housekeeping, and meal preparation Page 6

are taught all of these skills within Jewel’s home. Once they have learned the skills, she assigns them regular chores, and she mentions that even though she helps them, they are helping her too. In addition to coaching and supporting the young moms, Jewel also fills in with babysitting so the young moms can attend classes to finish their educations. Lastly, Jewel sets a great example as an adult the teenagers can look up to. She is honest and shares life experiences with them to help shape them into strong adults with good reasoning and decision-making skills. Jewel mentions she never sets a rule or tells the young moms “no” about something without having a discussion about why and the consequences of bad life choices. For Jewel, the biggest indicator of success, as well as the biggest blessing, is to see the young moms stop living in fear and learn how to be great, independent parents. When they arrive at her home, the young moms worry and cry a lot. They are wary and uncertain. But Jewel establishes ground rules and respect up front, and then she just keeps offering love until they feel safe and at home. There is a need for foster homes for the PCFC program in Western Maryland. Jewel said she would encourage anyone considering fostering to not hesitate and just go for it. She finds the work incredibly rewarding, and as a bonus, she said she has even more grandkids than her biological ones. Becoming like a second mom to the young mothers, Jewel has created long-term family ties with moms who have transitioned out of the program. Even living independently, they still come to Jewel for love and advice, and she affectionately reminds them, “I will always be your mama.” The rewards of seeing the young mothers have success in life is greater than anything else Jewel could imagine. She mentioned there is nothing more fulfilling than seeing her hard work with them turn into their building and maintaining strong families. The young moms are also very appreciative of the work Jewel has done. They leave her house grateful for her nurturing and the accomplishments she has helped them achieve. Jewel recommends putting yourself in the shoes of a scared teenager who has a weak support system. If you can maintain that empathy, as well as compassion and patience, the fostering of young mothers is incredibly successful. As Jewel said at the end of our interview, “I love what I do. Life is better when you love what you do.”
