25 Simple Ways to Countdown to Christmas BY LISA A. BEACH

W Black Friday, a whirlwind of activity ensues that hen the holiday season unofficially kicks off on

leaves families almost breathless by the end of December. Instead of rushing through the month, be intentional about what you say yes to this holiday season. Rather than over-committing to too many activities that take you away from your family, focus instead on infusing the holiday spirit into your family. But how can you accomplish this without cramming more activities into an already frenetic season? Create an advent calendar, with 25 days of simple, meaningful holiday activities that focus on giving, family, friendship, fun and tradition. You can buy an inexpensive advent calendar with pockets and fill each day with a fortune-cookie style paper noting the day’s activity, or simply write the activity-of-the-day on the family calendar you already use. Starting on December 1st, implement one idea each day to slow down your holidays and focus on intentional activities that create lasting memories. ◆Play the Giving Game. Brainstorm a list of ways you can give to others without buying something from a store. (Examples: give a smile, a hug, an encouraging word, a helping hand, etc.) Post the list on the fridge as a daily reminder. Each night (at dinner or before bedtime), ask kids to share how they gave to others that day. Track everyone’s daily “gifts,” and at the end of the week, the child who gave the most gets to choose a holiday flick to watch for family movie night. ◆Make holiday s’mores, preferably over a fire pit if you have one. Add crushed candy canes to a classic s’more recipe for a festive spin on this classic summertime treat. ◆Adopt an international Christmas tradition. The Swedes celebrate St. Lucia Day on December 13, which marks the beginning of the Christmas season and focuses on St. Lucy being the light during the long, dark Scandinavian winters. season by eating breakfast or dinner together by candlelight. Or adopt the French tradition of making buche de Noel, a traditional cake that resembles a Yule log with bark-colored frosting and a rich, buttercream filling. Decorate it with “snow” by sprinkling confectioner’s sugar on top. ◆Blow holiday bubbles outside by adding red food coloring to one jar of bubbles and green food coloring to another bottle. For a crafty twist, blow the colored bubbles onto snow (or a sheet of white paper) and watch a Christmas color-burst emerge. ◆Play Christmas tourist in a neighboring town. Pop in a local gift shop to check out holiday treasures. Walk along the storefronts and look at holiday window displays. Grab a sweet treat at a local bakery you’ve never been to before. ◆Cull through old toys, books, and clothes to give to needy families. Take your kids with you to donate the items together. ◆Allow your kids to decorate their bedroom doors for Christmas and offer up supplies of garland, ornaments, ribbons, etc. ◆Invite grandma or a favorite uncle to a craft or baking day at your house to ensure your holiday fun extends to other family members. ◆Designate a “chores for charity” week. If you normally pay your kids for daily chores, ask them to donate their earnings (matched by mom and dad) to a charity of their choosing. If you don’t normally pay for chores, conduct a “chores for charity” weekend with a menu of special paid jobs to choose from (i.e., raking leaves, cleaning the family car’s interior, washing windows,

etc.). Pool everyone’s wages and let the kids drop the family donation into a Salvation Army kettle. ◆Attend a community holiday event (such as a concert, play, festival, live nativity scene, or parade) and bring a lonely relative, friend, or neighbor with you. ◆Do a “ding-dong-ditch” by secretly placing a poinsettia plant on a neighbor’s porch, ringing the doorbell, and running away without getting caught. ◆Pick a Secret Santa among family members and do something exceptionally kind for each other every day for a week. Reveal your Secret Santa identity in a cookiesand-milk ceremony at the end of seven days. ◆Ask each family member to choose a favorite cookie recipe. Then schedule a few baking sessions to make batches of each person’s favorite treat. Everyone helps research recipes, make a list of ingredients, shop for supplies, bake, clean up and, of course, eat the tasty results! ◆During your cookie-baking sessions, make extra to share. Take a cookie tray to your local fire department and thank them for their service. Or divvy up cookies into little treat bags and deliver them to a few neighbors. ◆Instead of a lemonade stand, host a hot chocolate stand in your neighborhood, asking for donations to your favorite charity. ◆Go on a nature hike and bring along gifts to leave for forest critters, such as handfuls of bird seed or pieces of peanut-butter-smeared bread. ◆Play holiday decoration bingo by driving around your neighborhood checking out the lights and yard displays while searching for Christmas items like snowflakes, inflatable Santas, Rudolph, angel tree toppers, etc. ◆Take back an old-fashioned tradition and go Christmas caroling in your neighborhood. and cookies back at your house to cap off the songfest. ◆Create a new tradition, such as buying a new Christmas tree ornament that represents a special family moment from this past year or allowing kids to open one gift on Christmas Eve. ◆Let your kids sleep near the Christmas tree one night, nodding off to the soft glow of twinkling tree lights, with holiday music lulling them into a yuletide dreamland. ◆Live somewhere warm where it never snows? Let the kids have a flour fight in the backyard and watch them giggle as they cover each other in clouds of white. ◆Rewrite the lyrics to a favorite holiday tune, such as the Twelve Days of Christmas, by putting your

own’ family’s spin on the song. (“On the twelfth day of Christmas, my mother gave to me, 12 light sabers dueling, 11 markers drawing, 10 dogs a-barking….”) ◆Create a Christmas scavenger hunt at home, using holiday items and decorations around the house, on the porch and in your front yard. Conclude with a family game night after the kids put back their collected treasures. ◆Mix up a batch of reindeer dust (red and green glitter mixed with dried oats) and sprinkle it on your front lawn so Rudolph and his flying, antlered-gang can find your house on Christmas Eve. ◆Prepare a special treat for breakfast on Christmas morning, whether it’s something simple (such as freshsqueezed orange juice and cinnamon toast shaped like a Christmas tree) or something more indulgent (like mulled apple cider and a sausageand-egg casserole). With just a bit of intentional planning, you can slow down the pace of your holiday season and create a festive, memory-filled month your kids won’t forget. Six Family New Year Resolutions Supported by Science BY

As this year ends, the promise of new possibilities emerge with the coming of a new year. In addition to personal goals, many parents set family resolutions. After all, most of us consider the health and happiness of our family as important as our own. And, because the family functions as a unit, it makes sense to set a few resolutions for the benefit of everyone under your roof. Although the success rate for resolutions can be discouraging, experts say that they can stick if they are simple, carefully chosen, and realistic. Below are easy, enjoyable family resolutions that offer huge, scientifically-proven rewards for very little effort. Maximize Family Time By Downplaying Downtime: A recent study showed that on weekdays, the average family spends around 37 minutes of quality time together. Fortunately, it’s possible to increase these minutes by hacking our downtime. Consider this: many people spend an average of three hours per day on social media, television, or the internet. Time available for meaningful family

bonding can be lost in front of screens. Be deliberate with evenings, weekends, and downtime. Don’t let these minutes slip away. Eat Healthy Meals Together As Often As Possible: Eating meals as a family saves money, boosts health, and provides behavioral benefits for children. A study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that adolescents who dined with their families less than three times per week were more likely to participate in risky behaviors like drugs, alcohol, and smoking. Experts at Stanford Children’s Health say that younger children who regularly eat with their parents are more confident and connected. Even busy families can find time to break bread together. Grab-and-go grocery store options, crockpot meals, or madeahead casseroles mean that gathering as a family is feasible, even on hectic nights. Prioritize Family Game Night: Although it can be challenging to pry kids away from electronics, a family game night is an easy way to foster a face-to-face connection. This simple, inexpensive ritual yields

huge benefits like improved academic performance, enhanced motor skills, and increased sportsmanship. Researchers from Carnegie Mellon found that playing academic games improves classroom performance. And the University of Florida found that kids who use strategy with their parents have better memory and problem-solving skills outside of family life. To ensure enthusiastic participation, turn off electronics and choose games that are suitable for everyone. If you have a multiage family, pair up younger kids with older siblings and alternate easy games with harder ones. Take turns choosing games and regularly add new options to the rotation. Regularly Read To (Or With) Your Kids: Countless studies confirm the benefits of reading to children. Experts say that children who have regular exposure to books enjoy lasting academic and social benefits. Specifically, when a parent reads even one book per day to a child, it exposes him to 290,000 additional words by kindergarten. Even better, reading to your child at bedtime makes him much more likely to take

We all know that family time is vitally important, but how do we squeeze it into those weeknights when work runs late, or school obligations beckon? We safeguard those minutes and then figure how out how to make everyday events family time. Here are a few suggestions: Say No To Outside Non-Essentials: It’s so easy for what little free time we do have to get filled with requests from work, school, or other obligations. While it would be nice if we could accommodate every request, doing so takes valuable time away from our families. Learn to graciously say no to requests that don’t truly matter so that you can say yes to what does. Watch High-Quality Media Together: It’s probably unrealistic to banish all screen time from your routine, but you can maximize it by finding regular, highquality or educational programs that you can enjoy as a family. Involve Kids In Meal Prep And Chores: There is no way around making dinner and tidying up, but you can turn this into family time if you allow your kids to participate. Admittedly, the chores may take a little longer and require more patience when your children are involved. But, you can teach them valuable life skills, encourage work ethic, and have the chance to talk to them about their day. Even better, children often feel a deep sense of pride when contributing to family life. Find A Family Hobby: Shared hobbies are a great way to build memories and spend quality time with your kids. Consider activities like geocaching, horseback riding, camping, stamp collecting, model building, or martial arts. If your child is already passionate about a hobby, ask her to teach it to you. Sharing in this way will make her feel valued, while you will feel included.

the initiative to read on his own. Adolescents who are regular readers have higher levels of empathy and exhibit fewer risky behaviors. Regardless of age, many kids need a parent’s ongoing encouragement. Studies have shown a large decline in reading at around 4th grade. Not so coincidentally, this is when many parents assume that reading is a school-day activity. If your child will no longer read with you, discuss books you’re both reading. Or listen to audiobooks together on the way to school. Making books an ongoing priority will encourage lifelong intellectual curiosity. Spend More Time Outside: A recent study revealed that the majority of adults list their fondest childhood memories as experiences that happened outdoors. Playing outside with friends and visiting the ocean or seashore were among the most popular responses. Yet, today’s children spend more time indoors than any generation before them. According to the National Recreation and Park Association, American children spend four to seven minutes per day on outdoor play while many spend up to seven hours in front of electronic screens. It’s less challenging to get children outside if you make it a family activity. Go for a family walk after dinner. Play flag football in the backyard, or head for the neighborhood park. You’ll be rewarded with significant benefits such as increased immunity, enhanced cognitive and social development, and increased

attention span. Prioritize Civility: A survey of more than 1,000 participants found that 94 percent of respondents believed that civility is in a sharp, detrimental decline. The current climate of incivility is impossible to ignore. We see it in news coverage, on social media, and during our everyday activities. Bullying, lying, cheating, and showing an utter lack of empathy for others are all common forms are incivility. Thankfully, children learn acceptable behavior by watching their parents. They are always observing how we talk, how we behave, and how we treat one another. So it is possible to create a culture of respect in our own homes. We can demonstrate how to disagree with positivity, stress the importance of kindness and empathy, and insist that all family members treat others with dignity and respect. Additionally, kids who witness their parents prioritizing civility are better protected from the harm that this type of societal stress can cause to their health and their sense of wellbeing. None of these resolutions require large amounts of time, effort, or money, but they are all worth trying. January may be a good time to begin, but quality family time is important all year long. Seasonal Affective Disorder

nce the winter months set in with shorter days and colder temperatures, a percentage of adults, teens and children experience what is called Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. While the range of people at risk for developing SAD includes those between the ages of 15 to 55, women generally bear the brunt of this disorder. SAD is also linked to heredity, so having a family member who has been diagnosed raises anyone’s risk factor. While researchers cannot say what precisely causes SAD, there are several theories developed over time that make sense. Among them, scientists believe circadian rhythms can get out of sync with respect to clock time and an individual’s sleep-wake cycle, causing fatigue and depression. Another possible cause is connected to the body’s melatonin levels. Researchers suspect there is more melatonin in the human body during the winter when days are shorter, so this theory suggests the excessive melatonin causes feelings of fatigue, drowsiness and depression. Melatonin is a natural hormone made by the body that causes sleepiness. It can also be found in some foods. A third theory actually proposes that reduced levels of sunlight can cause a drop in serotonin levels, which then brings on feelings of sadness and depression. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood. No matter what causes SAD, the question remains of what to do if you or loved one shows increased signs of depression only in the fall and winter? According to Jill RachBeisel, MD and Chief of Clinical Affairs in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, there are three main types of treatment for seasonal affective disorder; light therapy, psychotherapy and medication. It is important to recognize there is a problem RachBeisel said in a recent article in the Nation’s Health. “Seasonal affective disorder is not something to brush off or tough out,” she added. She encourages people with the disorder to take in as much natural light as possible and also suggests working with a trained therapist to develop a treatment plan. She said starting light therapy in the early fall can reduce symptoms before they worsen. She also suggested antidepressants and psychotherapy are effective treatment in more severe cases and recommends finding a trained therapist. Here are other tips for dealing with SAD. Stay active to release “feel good” endorphins and other hormones which can improve your mood. Try to increase your exposure to sunlight, or if you purchase a lightbox, make sure it filters out UV rays and uses a cool white light. Get plenty of vitamin D, and remember the sun is a great natural source of vitamin D. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. If mood changes bring with them feelings of great sadness or hopelessness, it is very important to get medical attention and talk to a trained health care provider to find a treatment plan that is right for you. Winter can be a difficult month, but there are ways to stay healthy mentally and deal effectively with SAD.
