Dylan Widiker loves sports. The discipline, camaraderie and courage that go with team sports have carried him through a difficult fight with cancer. In the fall of 2007, Dylan was the running back for his junior high football team. During an early game, he was tackled and injured his right shoulder. The injury seemed serious, so he went to the doctor for X-rays. When his doctor saw a tumor in those films, he quickly referred Dylan to MD Anderson’s Children’s Cancer Hospital. Dylan had Ewing’s sarcoma, a type of bone cancer. Dylan had surgery to remove his right humerus bone and replace it with a cadaver bone. After the surgery, he was in a full body cast with his arm out at a right angle and was on chemotherapy — but he kept going to school. In support of their teammate, the whole eighth grade football team shaved their heads! Dylan rarely missed school while on treatment. Since then, he has had surgery on both lungs for about 15 small tumors, because bone cancers often spread to the lungs. Has this treatment slowed Dylan down or dimmed his love of sports? Not one pitch or touchdown! Football, baseball, track, basketball, even paintball are all favorites. He was released this spring to run sprints and relays and to compete in the triple jump and long jump on the Varsity track team. He practices all of the others with his left hand — he’s even pitching left handed! Now 16, Dylan is a junior at Magnolia West High School in Magnolia, Texas. Evidence of Dylan’s popularity is the fundraiser staged by the high school baseball team and held in conjunction with MD Anderson in September, 2009. They raised over $6,000 because they were not playing for themselves — they were playing for Dylan!

Dalvin Blanchard has a special guardian angel. A 16-year-old junior at Willow Ridge High School in Houston, Texas, Dalvin may not have always known that this person was an angel. The transformation happened very quickly. Last year Dalvin was just a typical teenager, focused on his grades at school, girls and football. He played running back, wide receiver and strong safety, working toward a successful sophomore season. During practice one day, he hurt his leg and couldn’t run. His coach sent him to a specialist to check out the injury. The answer was worse than a pulled muscle or broken leg. Dalvin had rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue tumor. That’s when his guardian angel showed up. Dalvin’s brother, Lesley, is 14 years older than Dalvin. Lesley took over as Dalvin’s caretaker and guardian angel so his parents could continue to work and maintain their insurance on Dalvin. The change in their relationship has been a bonus for both. Dalvin is no longer the “little kid” who was sometimes an annoyance, and Lesley is no longer the distant, grown-up big brother. They have become close friends and enjoy doing many things together. Dalvin missed the football season his sophomore year, but he continued his interest in the game. He and Lesley play “Madden NFL 10”, a video football game. He is also into rap music, texting his friends and driving. Lesley helped him get his learner’s permit last May. His favorite subjects at school are English Language Arts, reading and computer classes. He loves pizza with everything on it. Oh — and those girls. He still loves them! With that guardian angel watching over his every move, Dalvin is headed for a normal life where he can achieve all that he dreams to be.

Camp A.O.K. (Anderson’s Older Kids) stages a prom for campers, complete with tuxedos and prom dresses, make-up and fancy hair. It’s an evening to remember for teens who may not be able to attend their own proms at home.

Olivia Palacios will capture your heart with her sunny smile. She is a tiny young lady who is just 5 years old, but size and age have little to do with Olivia’s charming persona. She was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) when she was only 3. Her mother Rebecca says Olivia has responded very well to all her treatments. She is now on maintenance and should be through with treatment by the end of 2010. One bonus is that after losing all her hair during this process, Olivia has grown “new hair.” This huge bump in the road of her life seems to have had little effect on Olivia’s development as a healthy, happy, normal child. Her manners are lovely! She is a budding artist who is fond of drawing and painting (pink is her favorite color, with purple coming in at a close second). During our photo session, she asked to have her pencil sharpened so she could make her lines darker and sharper. She has great fine muscle control and strong little hands, so she can stay in the lines when she is coloring and make the colors dark. She also writes her name beautifully. Olivia enjoys many activities. In addition to her favorites — gymnastics and shopping — Olivia also loves to go to the movies. Her mother says a career as a movie critic may be in her future. Her favorite movie right now is “Flushed Away.” She also has the ability to focus! She can run all the remotes in the house and manage her mom’s cell phone — or maybe that’s a skill that comes naturally to 5-year-olds! With the support of her great family — dad Sonny, mom Rebecca, sister Brianna, 13, and brother Caleb, 2 — and her extended family and friends, Olivia is already dancing toward tomorrow!
Our collaboration with the Christopher Radko company continues with distinctive ornaments adapted from the children’s original artwork. Each ornament is blown glass, lined with sterling silver then handpainted and hand-glittered. They are collectible treasures! A B

Hannah Prather likes to laugh! She has many talents and interests, but laughing is one of her favorite things! Perhaps laughter is why she has managed her skirmish with Neurofibromatosis so well. Her joyous outlook on life is also visible in her artwork. Her two most famous designs for the Children’s Art Project are “Blue Chicken” and “Patchwork Flower.” If you have seen either, you will remember them! Hannah is a freshman in high school this year, and her world is full. She loves science, English and creative writing, math, computer and interior design classes. She has been a cheerleader for the last three years, loves to swim, run track, and hang out with her friends. And when she is not busy doing those things, she loves to draw, take photographs, text her friends and listen to music. When she has time, she volunteers at the Children’s Museum in San Antonio, Texas, where her mother works. However, it is not the outgoing Hannah that makes friends so easily that you really want to know. Instead, it is the compassionate Hannah who cares about other people and has the ability to see what makes a person special. Several years ago, she and her mother started a “Water of Life” project in response to the devastation in Asia caused by the big tsunami. Hannah created a label for bottles of water and sold them to raise money for relief aid for that area. Hannah wrote a story about the project for school and won second place for her book in a Young Authors & Illustrators Contest. With a heart so big, expect her to soar high above the stars all through her life!
