Lara, age 12, from The Woodlands,

Texas is an enthusiastic, friendly, independent young artist. In early 2018, she was diagnosed with Burkitt Lymphoma, a cancer whose initial treatment often results in extended periods of hospitalization to manage the side effects of the aggressive treatment protocol. Lara’s life was turned upside down very quickly. At her first visit to MD Anderson's Child & Adolescent Center, Lara joined our Children’s Art Project activities and felt at ease. “I don’t know what we would have done if it hadn’t been for art,” Lara’s mother, Mai, said of their long stays at the Children’s Cancer Hospital.

Fighting cancer isn’t easy, but finding ways to bring normal activities to Lara’s days made a huge difference in her experience. This summer, she participated in many of the virtual art classes provided by Children's Art Project. Now cancer-free, Lara says, “There’s always hope, even when it feels like there’s none.”

Eli, age 7, from Missouri City, TX was diagnosed

with acute lymphoblastic leukemia just after his fifth birthday, following a year of unresolved stomach pains. He was transferred to MD Anderson for treatment and immediately started chemotherapy. As a result of the chemotherapy, Eli has had neuropathy from the knees down. For a while he was in a wheelchair and he’s had to attend physical therapy to re-learn how to walk. During his time at the hospital, Eli has loved taking part in MD Anderson Children’s Art Project activities, painting, drawing, and letting his imagination run wild! Eli’s mom, Leanne, says, “I love MD Anderson. This is the place to be. Here, Eli is not just a kid with cancer. The kids can just be kids.” A While he still deals with complications from cancer and chemotherapy, Eli is in remission. These days, this active little guy enjoys playing soccer and hanging out with his friends and family. Always spirited and energetic, "Never lose your fight!", he says.
