September 8 – November 26, 2016 Our Home is Our Gallery

Jim Logan, The Artist and the Musicians, Yukon Arts Centre Permanent Collection.

Curated by: New BC Indian Arts and Welfare Society Collective (Members of NBCIAWSC include Peter Morin, Tania Willard and Gabe Hill)

Featuring the artwork of over 25 Yukon indigenous artists, Our Home is Our Gallery focuses on Indigenous aesthetic acts and the art histories that these methods are connected to. This exhibition attempts to redefine the gallery space to be inclusive of community and family based experiences. The visual work of Our Home is our Gallery presents skills-based practices, including beading, weaving, and tooling by artists like: Fanny Charlie, Annie Henry and Keith Wolf Smarch, represented in the Yukon Government’s Permanent Art Collection, in conversation with artists like Doug Smarch, Jeneen Frei Njootli, Joseph Tisiga and Jim Logan. Please note that this exhibition features some difficult content in Jim Logan’s painting suite A Requiem for Our Children. This series of paintings speaks to the Residential School experience of Indigenous children in the Yukon. These paintings were completed in 1990. A Requiem is offered as a moment of healing in respect for all of the children who were forced to attend these places. Page 3

Jessica Auer and Andreas Rutkauskas: Out of Office

Created during the Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency, works from Out of Office deal with the social and cultural climate of a present-day wilderness experience. In June 2014, Jessica Auer and Andreas Rutkauskas camped along the Chilkoot trail for 14 days, from Dyea, Alaska to Bennett, BC, photographing other backpackers with a 4x5” view camera. Like the images of the Klondike Gold Rush Stampeders who travelled this same route, these portraits provide an anthropological perspective; yet also speak to the role of the participant-observer, in this case, the artists in residence. The artists’ experience in regards to communication technology and material culture are correspondingly expressed in a se lection of sound and video works. Page 4

Curated by Humam Alsalim and Penticton Art Gallery director/ curator, Paul Crawford, Behind the Lines: Contemporary Syrian Art features works by 19 emerging Syrian artists, 13 of which still currently live in Syria. The artworks in this multi-faceted exhibition respond to the shattering effects of war faced by Syrians today. From displacement, imprisonment and violent eradication, to the destruction of cultural identity and history, the issues explored in this exhibition shed light on both the personal suffering experienced by the individual artists as well as the universal relevance of the devastation of war.
