Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. How is it already summer? It doesn’t seem two minutes and we were all wrapping Christmas presents and here we are at the longest day and the nights will begin to draw in. Before I do anything else I would like to say a huge well done to all those involved in the ﬁrst Spalding Music & Beer-fest that took place at the end of May. Huge numbers of people attended the three day event, large sums were raised for local charities and it was nice to see a local event once again in the town – here’s to many more years! This issue is jam packed with ideas to entertain the children over the summer, inspiration for improving your home, advice from Martin Lewis on savings and Tim test drives the Range Rover Vogue. We have had a phenomenal response to our recent competitions to win a spa break at Ragdale Hall and tickets to see Bryan Ferry in concert. Well done to Tracey Nightingale who won the Ragdale break and Stephanie Lamont who won a pair of tickets to see Bryan Ferry. We hope to bring you more competitions to win prizes later in the year. Elsewhere we explore the local area looking at Heckington Mill’s history and the milling that continues today. We are always looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left to say is to have a great month and enjoy the hot weather!

Annual Pinchbeck Funday for Callum Pite Smile Charity Now in it’s fourth year the family fun day on August 6th 2016 will be held at Pinchbeck UTD Football Club , Knight Street Pinchbeck from 11am. You can expect stalls, hogroast, bouncy castle, live music from Retrospekt and there will be a football match between Pinchbeck Under 11’s and Boston Under 11’s. The charity fun day raises funds for the Callum Pite Smile Charity , a local charity for children with cancer, many terminal. The proceeds help the families create a family memory, by a funding trip or adventure.

What a weight oﬀ! A woman from Deeping St James was so impressed with the healthy eating plan of Slimming World that she left her full time job in IT to become a Slimming World Consultant. Sandra has lost a stone since joining the Deeping St James group in October. “Although I’m not massively overweight, my weight did ﬂuctuate between dress sizes and I often felt fat and frumpy. I’d tried losing weight online and was successful a few years back but the pounds crept back up again and I realised that I needed some help with motivation. My husband is very supportive and suggested that we attended group together. It was a case of”I’ll go if you will”, so we both started together at the Deeping St James Thursday group run by Cheryl. We have since lost 3½ stone between us. The group is very warm and friendly, you soon get to know everyone and it’s given me the boost and motivation I needed. There is no pressure and absolutely no judgment or humiliation within the group. I love the fact that I can enjoy tasty dishes including pasta, potatoes and my absolute favourite, roast

dinner. I even enjoy evenings out with my friends and family who can’t believe I can eat so much and still lose weight. “ It’s going to be life changing for me to swap a stressful role for a new challenge where I have the opportunity to make a difference to others by helping them to lose weight and I’m really looking forward to opening a new group soon in Holbeach. All the consultants I’ve met have said how much they love what they do for a living and that’s a new concept for me.

New health and weight loss service for Lincolnshire Individuals, business and groups can get health and weight loss advice and support for themselves, employees and members via a new Lincolnshire service. The Healthy Living Team at Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) has been created to continue and build upon the work done by the LCVS health trainer service. Jan Gould-Martin, LCVS senior health and social care ofﬁcer, said: “We were determined not to see the expertise and professionalism of the service lost and have therefore created this new look team to deliver something we know is greatly needed in Lincolnshire. “The record of LCVS health trainers speaks for itself – we know the service makes a real difference to people and helps improve and even prolong lives. “This new service provides an opportunity for people to keep beneﬁting from the reputable and reliable advice and

support of this team.” The Healthy Living Team is manned by qualiﬁed health trainers from the former LCVS health trainer team. With increasing pressure on budgets, funding for the team was withdrawn by Lincolnshire County Council Public Health in April of this year, meaning the service can no longer be provided free. However the team aims to empower and enable clients to establish their own health routines and address their own hurdles to health in as few sessions and at as little cost as possible. One-to-one sessions can cost as little as £20 each for up to one hour, with remote support available at £6 per month. Other services are tailored and costs are available following discussion. The team is also committed to continuing to deliver the projects the former LCVS health trainer team had been

They include the Boston Big Local Stay Active courses – promoting physical activity and exercise for older people. ummer time is a time to get out and about and enjoy the many festivities and events that are abundant in both South Holland and Lincolnshire, celebrating local life, local communities, our history and traditions. Locally, Holbeach has its annual Food Festival on Saturday, July 2nd, from 10am, celebrating all that is grown, retailed and produced for supermarkets all over the UK, all in the stunning grounds of William Stukeley C of E Primary School. Over 30 stalls with a mix of food, drink and entertainment and has free entry! Continuing the food theme, In Spalding at the The Vista Community Hall, there is the Spalding and South Holland Festival of Food and Drink over the weekend of 9th and 10th July, with live cookery demos and lots of mouth watering food, so for food lovers a great month! There are a number of Brass Band Concerts at Ayscoughfee Hall Gardens, including the Kirton Brass Band on 3rd July, Swineshead Silver Band on 10th July and the Kings Lynn Brass Band on 17th July, truly a part of the great British Summer. Just as entertaining, as I saw them recently at Naylor’s Open Farm day are the Ukulele Orchestra also at Ayscoughfee Hall on the 24th July. For music fans, UB 40 are live at Lincoln Castle on 9th July and the Lincoln Steampunk Festival takes place from 26th to 29th August, an increasingly popular event. Moving into August it is well worth noting on the back of an extremely successful but completely unrelated Music and Beer Festival in Spalding in June, Holbeach has the second Music and Beer Festival over the

Over 28,000 people visited the poppies over the ﬁrst weekend, so incredibly popular and why not take in the exhibition, Lincolnshire Voices from the Great War, which is in the Victorian Gaol, in itself well worth a visit, along with the new Magna Carta Vault. So lots to do and hope you enjoy just some of these events – there are many more, not forgetting South Holland District Council’s Summer Fun Brochure which will be available from mid July and details a huge number of activities for children and young people in particular. Reﬆ Breaks at Work Who is entitled to a rest break at work? Most workers are entitled to daily and weekly rest breaks, and rest breaks during the course of the working day. Whether you are paid or not for these breaks will depend on what your employment contract says. There are some workers who have no automatic legal entitlement to a rest break, and there are special rules about rest breaks for young people and lorry or coach drivers.

What rest breaks can you take? If you are aged 18 or over, and your working day is more than 6 hours, you have the right to an uninterrupted rest break of at least 20 minutes unless: you are in a particular sort of work, where special rules apply you are in a particular sort of work which means you have the right to a

compensatory rest break

Your contract of employment may be more generous than this. The law does not say when this break should be taken but government guidelines say that the break should be taken during the day rather than at the beginning or the end. You are entitled to spend your break away from your workstation. Lunch breaks count as rest breaks. If you’re a shift worker, your rest break should be in addition to any breaks you get in between shifts. Daily rest breaks If you are aged 18 or over, you are entitled to 11 hours’ rest in a row between each working day.

Weekly rest breaks If you are aged 18 or over, you are entitled to take one day’s rest in each working week. This may be averaged over a two week period, for example, you would be entitled to two days’ rest over a fortnight. A week runs from midnight on Sunday to midnight the following Sunday. Who is not entitled to specific rest breaks? The law says that some types of workers are not entitled to specific rest breaks. You may be entitled to a compensatory rest break – see below. If you work in any of the jobs listed below, check your employment contract to see if you are entitled to take any rest breaks Workers who do not have an automatic legal right to rest breaks include: couriers, employed taxi drivers and drivers of small goods vehicles. These workers are entitled to ‘compensatory rest’ (see below) rather than specific rest breaks some rail workers. These workers are entitled to ‘compensatory rest’ some people working offshore in the oil and gas industries. Where their workplace is far from their home, they are entitled to ‘compensatory rest’ members of the army, police and civil protection services workers in certain industries such as security guards. These workers are entitled to ‘compensatory rest’ There are separate rules for lorry, coach and heavy goods vehicle (HGV) driver.

If you’re a shift worker and can’t take your rest break

If you’re a shift worker and you’ve changed shift, or finished work in the morning before your eve ning shift, it may not be possible to tak e your full rest break before starti ng the new shift. In these circumstances, you should be given a compensatory re st break. Compensatory rest breaks If you don’t have the right to specific rest breaks, or if you are a shift worker and as a result you have to work during what would normally be a rest period, you’re still entitled to a rest period. This is called a compensatory rest break. This means that you can take the break at a later time. It should be taken within a reasonable time from when you missed the break and should last as long as a specific rest break would have lasted. If you have missed a rest break If you’ve missed a rest break to which you are entitled, your employer must make sure that there’s no risk to your health and safety. If your employer won’t allow you to take a rest break If your employer doesn’t allow you to take the rest breaks you’re entitled to, you could ask to take the time off at a later time. A Human Resources officer or trade union representative can help you do this. If talking to your employer doesn’t work, you could raise a written grievance. If you still need to take matters further, you could make a claim to an employment tribunal. There’s a strict time limit for doing this. You should think carefully before you make a claim as it could make relations with your employer worse, or put your job at risk. You should get help from an experienced adviser.

Term 6 is nearly upon us, and we are coming to the end of another academic year. Year 5&6 children have had their trip to London to visit the Houses of Parliament & go on the London Eye; a very educational and enjoyable day. Year 6 children have also been to the Church Schools Festival in Lincoln. A new parents evening for children starting in Reception in September 2016 has taken place, and we have new intake afternoons arranged throughout Term 6. Key Stage 2 SATs week has taken place, and results will be coming out towards the end of Term 6. Our Year 6 leavers will be attending taster days at their new secondary schools this term. On 10th June we held a street party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday – thanks to all the parents that came along. 13th July is our Sports Day – we are hoping for good weather! Agilitas have organised several

Schools and growers groups join growing conteﬆ Primary schools, community organisations and growing groups in Skegness, Spalding and Boston have pledged to get composting for a new contest. A dozen schools and groups across the three areas registered to join the Anglian Water Keep It Clear Fat of the Land Composting Challenge, in association with Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service. Free specialist composting bins, worth around £180 each, have been presented to each of them and a total of 600 giant pumpkin seeds. Collette Parker, Keep It Clear customer engagement manager, said: “We are thrilled so many people have embraced the contest which is all about raising awareness of compost bins now available that allow food waste to be recycled. “Putting those items in drains causes costly, unpleasant and inconvenient blockages whilst composting allows them to be put to great use, helping gardens to thrive.” The groups and schools that have signed up to the Fat of the Land Composting Challenge are now going head-to-head to try to win gardening vouchers totalling £1,200. To win they will need to keep their composting bins topped up and demonstrate the results.

All have been challenged to create an innovative gardening project incorporating composting and grow the biggest pumpkin. The Anglian Water Keep It Clear campaign is raising awareness of the need for fats, oils, food waste, wipes and sanitary waste to be kept out of drains and toilets. Recipients of free composting bins and registered to take part in the challenge include: In South Holland: St John the Baptist Primary School Spalding Parish Church of England Day School St Bartholomews Primary School, West Pinchbeck Monkshouse Primary School Friends of Sir Gleed School

The competition has seen students, staff, parents and the local community working together and it is fantastic to celebrate the artistic talents of the students within the context of our Woodland Peace Garden. Local focus

Heckington Windmill

he mill was originally built in 1830 by Edward Ingledew of Gainsborough for Michael Hare as a ﬁve-sailed mill. Following a severe thunderstorm which blew off the cap and sails, it was repaired in 1892. The repairs were carried out by John Pocklington using a cap and eight sails from a windmill in Boston. The bricks from the Boston mill were recycled and used to build the mill house that stands at the front of the site. Heckington mill ceased work in 1946 and deteriorated until it was purchased by Kesteven County Council in 1953 and made safe. The mill underwent restoration in 1986 and further major repairs were carried out in 2004 and is now in full working order.

The mill is now owned by Lincolnshire County Council, but is operated and run on a voluntary basis by Heckington Windmill Trust. The original 8 sails that you see at Heckington today were not built for the tower that now stands on the site. The cap overhangs the tower bricks, conﬁrming that it came from a different mill. William Wedd Tuxford built the original Skirbeck 8 sailed mill in Boston in 1813 and successfully operated it for most of the 19th century. In 1891 it was put up for auction and was sold to John Pocklington of Wyberton for £72.10.0d, on the condition that it was completely cleared from the site. This he did, taking the sails and machinery to ﬁt on the redundant tower at Heckington and used the bricks from the Skirbeck tower to build the Victorian mill house at

KNOW... …Heckington is believed to be the only location in the UK (and probably the world!) where there have been windmills with 4, 5, 6, and 8 sails.

Heckington. Heckington windmill is fully operational and they have the ability to grind their own wheat for flour. There are two types of mill stone, Derbyshire grit stones which produce wholemeal flour and French stones, used for white flour. The output from the French stones needs to be bolted (sieved) to remove the bran, so you can also buy stoneground white flour. The sieving process also produces a flour called Special Brown which is high in bran, and bakes a brown loaf. All wheat used is English, and for the last few years has been grown around the village of Heckington, in sight of the windmill. Personal Savings Allowance

f you’ve got savings, next time you receive a statement expect to see something rather strange. There’s been a hidden revolution of the savings rules, and it means when you’re paid interest, from now on no tax will automatically be taken off. It’s all due to the new Personal Savings Allowance (PSA), which launched at the start of the new tax year on 6 April. Previously, unless you were saving in an ISA, when you earned interest, the taxman took a bite. So for every £100 interest earned as a basic-rate taxpayer, you only actually got £80 (higher rate got £60). Yet now, if you earn interest within your PSA, you get £100 and you keep £100. For a detailed Q&A on it, read www.mse.me/PSA, but here are my quick need-to-knows. - All savings interest is now paid gross, i.e., no tax will be taken off. - This works for ALL interest - not just savings accounts, but bank accounts, credit unions and peer-to-peer savings. However, share dividends aren’t included. - Basic 20% rate taxpayers can earn £1,000/yr interest tax-free. - Higher 40% rate taxpayers can earn £500/yr interest tax-free. - Top 45% rate taxpayers don’t get a PSA, so all interest is taxable. - Cash ISAs, premium bonds and other taxfree savings interest DON’T count towards the £1,000 (or £500) limit so you can get this interest too. - If you earn interest over the limit, you pay tax at your income tax rate, but only on the amount over the limit. It’s worth thinking about this for a moment. For a basic rate taxpayer, with cash in the top easy-access standard savings account, you’d need over £75,000 saved before you had to start paying tax on it. That’s why 95% of people won’t pay tax on their savings interest this year. As for most people tax is no longer an issue with savings, where you should have your cash has changed. It’s now usually simply a question of where you can earn the most interest. So first, check your savings today and find what they earn. You’ll be shocked - rates have plummeted. The first thing you should look at, even before saving, is clearing any expensive debt or overpaying an expensive mortgage (one 22 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

where the interest rate is higher than the top rate you can earn by saving). After that it’s a question of putting each penny where it earns the most. So here’s my savings fountain to do that. Some accounts offer high in-credit savings rates to entice switchers - it’s the only way to earn decent interest on decent amounts. The top ones are the www.Santander.co.uk 123 account paying 3% in between £3,000 and £20,000 (with a £5/mth fee, but that is often covered, as the account also pays cashback on bills) and the www.LloydsBank. com Club Lloyds account, paying 4% between £4,000 and £5,000. Others pay up to 5% interest, though on smaller amounts. For the full range and eligibility criteria see www.mse.me/topbanks REGULAR SAVINGS. These pay high interest but only on small amounts, generally for a short time. They’re great for, er, saving regularly, but you can also trickle lump sums in there too. Quick And Easy Mini Pizzas Ingredients 450g strong white bread ﬂour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C

In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another

Preheat the oven to 150C or Gas Mark 2. In a medium sized bowl, mix together the sugar and the butter. Do this until the mixture becomes light and ﬂuffy. In a separate bowl add together the ﬂour, the baking powder and salt. Then sieve them together into the butter and sugar mixture. Gradually stir in then add the walnuts and chocolate chips and stir in again. Roll the dough into 12 small balls and place them on a greased baking tray evenly spaced apart. Flatten them slightly on top before putting them in the oven for 15-20 minutes. When they are ready the edges of the cookies should be a golden brown.

In a bowl, mix together the butter and sugar using an electric whisk. Do this until the mixture is light and fluffy. Then, one at a time, add the eggs and beat into the mixture. Using a sieve, sift in the flour and bicarbonate soda. Mix in

This car is big – and it never lets you forget that. Even behind the wheel you are aware that you’re in charge of a two-tonne luxury machine.

think that’s a good thing. It keeps you on your toes and stops you driving like a fool. Mind you, even if you are predisposed to moments of motoring madness, the Range Rover 3.0 TDV6 Vogue SE does its best to placate you. It brings out the gentleman in you and makes you feel good. Not superior – just good. But with every positive, there tends to be a negative. And in the Range Rover’s case it seems that unfortunate false impressions can quickly be born. For example, when parking at the beach with my family, a guy commented that it was “alright for some” to have enough money to buy such a car. And while wafting along the M1 in the fast lane I was greeted with a one ﬁnger salute. The fact that the possessor of the digit had been hogging the middle lane for the last ﬁve miles didn’t seem to matter to him. I don’t get those kind of reactions when driving smaller test cars, so the Range Rover does seem to be the common denominator here. But, if there’s one thing I’ve learnt in life: you can’t control what other’s think. So it’s best to let them get on with it and enjoy what you’re doing. And when you’re driving a Range Rover, it’s hard to be anything other than happy. Inside, it’s tastefully minimalistic with all the key functions controlled through straightforward switchgear. And back on the blacktop, it only starts to tell you “enough is enough” when pushed hard around twisty ribbons of road. The large car expresses its distaste like a stallion. But rather than bucking and whinnying, it lurches and squeals. All versions, including this mid-spec Vogue SE, have all the equipment necessary for happy motoring, and the power unit under the bonnet is hooked up to computerised gadgetry to keep things shiny side up, whether on asphalt or over the rough stuff. Indeed, the car scored the full ﬁve-stars when tested by safety body, Euro NCAP. All things considered, the Range Rover is a wonderfully relaxed and utterly competent machine on and off-road. It’s even relatively economical with a V6 oil-burner under the bonnet. Just be aware of other motorists who may judge you due to their inverted badge snobbery. But that’s their problem, right?
