Happy Easter! Welcome to the April issue of Simply Boston Fingers crossed we are in for some good weather for the Easter holidays as it is a later celebration this year. I am certainly hoping so as we have booked for a few days down in Devon camping whilst the children are on holiday, thermals at the ready! In this issue we learn about CBD oil from Hapi Hemp, Annette from The Village Midwives talks about de-clutter not only our cupboards but also our minds too. We have once again partnered with local companies to sponsor dogs at Jerry Green Rescue Centre who need to find a new home this Spring. The sponsorship revenue pays for the advert for each four legged friend looking for a home as well as a 15% donation is made directly to the charity. Is there space on your walks and on your sofa for a four legged friend? In Home & Property we look at utilising pots and containers to create interest within the garden, our recipe of the month is Teriyaki Salmon (it’s a good one!) and Tim test drives the Ford Fiesta ST.
Food & Drink - P22
DON’T FORGET: March 31st at 2am is officially when British Summer Time begins, so move your clocks an hour forward. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue, don’t eat too much chocolate and see you next month!

Art from schools’ plastics pollution pick-up An art installation is to be created from plastic pollution collected in Boston borough by primary school children as part of this year’s Big Schools Clean Up. Boston Borough Council, Boston Big Local, Transported, the Boston arts organisation, and Lincolnshire’s Waste Partnership have joined forces to turn plastics collected by schools into a unique work of art to go on public display. In a similar way that ugly knives, handed in as part of a weapons amnesty, have been turned into a beautiful steel angel (pictured), plastic will be transformed into a thought-provoking work by an artist commissioned by Transported. Schools taking part will be issued with specialcoloured bags to put plastic rubbish into. Boston Borough Council will collect these for storage at Lincolnshire County Council’s waste transfer station in Boston before they are required by the artist. The art work will go on public display in the borough, together with a plaque namechecking every school which helps. The plastics “sculpture” will also go on display at this year’s Lincolnshire Show as part of an exhibit by the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership.
Jenny Moore, Boston Borough Council’s environment supervisor, and organiser of the annual Boston clean ups, said: “This project is sure to generate lots of interest and I hope this unique event inspires our schools to want to take part, especially as concerns about plastics pollution worldwide are so heightened at the moment.” Cllr David Brown, the borough council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Hopes for a clean future, free of the scourge of littered plastics, rests with all of us, but especially with the generation of the future. This is great scheme to engage children in caring for their environment, with a final product they will have helped create to serve as a reminder to us all to be careful with plastics.” Nick Jones, Transported’s programme director, said: “Transported is delighted to have this opportunity to work with the borough and the town’s community groups to use creativity to highlight the issue of pollution. Many of our projects are about improving public spaces, using the arts to celebrate what makes a place special,
and encouraging people to care about where they live, fostering a sense of pride. So this project is a great opportunity to improve the area as well as create a new artwork that gets the environmental message across to more people.” Chairman of Boston Big Local, Richard Tory, said: “I am delighted that the Boston Big Local can support this project. There has been a lot in the national press recently regarding single-use plastics and this project will help raise awareness about plastic pollution locally and how we all can take responsibility in improving the areas where we live. I look forward to seeing what can be produced.” All primary schools in Boston borough are being contacted by Boston Borough Council with an invitation to take part. They are encouraged to confirm their wish to join in by emailing tracey. banks@boston.gov.uk
Local Plan given the green light A strategy that provides a blueprint for all future development in both the districts of South Holland and Boston has been formally adopted. The South East Lincolnshire Local Plan was given the green light by members of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee - a partnership of South Holland District Council, Boston Borough and Lincolnshire County Council at a meeting at Boston Borough Council last Friday morning (8 March). The Local Plan will identify opportunities for growth and set out clear policies to guide proposals for new developments across the two authorities up until 2036. South Holland District Councillor Roger Gambba-Jones, Chairman of the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee, said: “I’m delighted that the Local Plan has been formally adopted and I thank all those who’ve been involved. “This Plan now gives residents and those who do business in the area the certainly that not only will we will be planning for the growth of our economy
4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
and housing development, but that we will ensure that we can protect areas of the district that people tell us they want protecting.” Councillor Claire Rylott, Boston Borough Council Cabinet member and vice-chairman of the joint committee, said: “This is a major milestone for the future of Boston in bringing forward new homes, businesses and infrastructure.” The formal adoption of the Local Plan is the result of four public consultations held over the past few years across both districts, aimed at informing residents of the production of the Plan, together with collating and considering the thousands of comments received over that time from individuals and other interested parties. The plan was then submitted for Independent examination which was conducted by a Government Planning Inspector who after giving it considerable scrutiny considered it to be acceptable and able to be adopted subject to modifications. Aiming For Sky High Air Ambulance Support Air ambulance crews save countless lives by reaching incidents within minutes to provide critical care for the most seriously ill and injured people directly at the scene. And as charities, they do so with no government funding. Now people across the area are joining together to thank local air ambulances by fundraising with Lincolnshire Co-op through its Community Champions scheme. Together with its members and colleagues the Society is raising money until June for Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, which is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. The partnership will help the charity raise vital funds needed to fly 24/7. It’s currently in a twoyear trial, phasing up from its current 7am-7pm seven day a week cover to a full 24 hours a day, and must increase funds to support this move. The charity receives no direct government or NHS funding – it’s fuelled only by fundraising and generous contributions from the community. A donation will be made through the Community Champions scheme each time a member shops in a Lincolnshire Co-op outlet. Proceeds from the carrier bag levy will also go into the pot. Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance 25th Anniversary pin badges will be sold in Lincolnshire Co-op outlets
across the two counties for a suggested donation of £1, and there’ll be collection tins for customers to give any spare change. Lincolnshire Co-op food stores will also sell special lemon slices from Gadsby’s, the Society’s own bakery, with 10p from each pack sold added to the fundraising. Generous holidaymakers can also donate £1 when booking a break in the Society’s 14 travel branches until June. Meanwhile, colleagues in Lincolnshire Coop outlets will try to reach new heights with fundraising instore including a Wear It Yellow Day on either Saturday 30th March or Sunday 31st March during Discover Lincolnshire Weekend. There’ll be quiz sheets with prizes including a chance to meet the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance crew, a helicopter flight gift experience and more. There’ll also be fun in the Waterside Shopping Centre in Lincoln on Saturday 30th March to drum up support. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Community Engagement Manager Sam Turner said: “Air ambulances cover vast areas – over 3,500 square miles across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance – but can reach someone who’s in trouble in minutes. “They are mobile A&E departments flying some of the best medics straight to the scenes of incidents, working together with our emergency services. Their crews are so skilled they can carry out open heart surgery by the roadside. There’s no other way to say it – they are lifesavers. “Together with our colleagues and members we’re proud to say thank you by fundraising to help them carry on this incredible work.” The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance is called out on average three times a day, and often more. Since
1994 the charity has attended more than 19,700 missions. It’s also the only Helicopter Emergency Medical Service in the East Midlands which can carry blood on board, meaning its crew can give transfusions on the way to hospital and buy vital time for the most seriously ill patients. Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance Area Fundraising Manager Gemma Shaw said: “We are all immensely excited about working with Lincolnshire Co-op. “With its support it can not only help us to raise awareness of the work we do but help us to achieve our biggest fundraising push in our 25 year history!” Both East Anglian Air Ambulance and Yorkshire Air Ambulance will also benefit from fundraising by colleagues and members at their local Lincolnshire Co-op outlets and will use money raised to help run their services. Since its launch in 2000, East Anglian Air Ambulance has attended over 25,000 lifesaving missions. It aims to become a 24/7 Helicopter Emergency Medical Service by 2020. Yorkshire Air Ambulance serves five million people across Yorkshire. It carries out over 1,800 missions every year and needs to raise £12,000 every day to keep saving lives.
Boston punching above its weight Boston Borough Council is “one of the nation’s most innovative councils”. That was the accolade paid at the LGC Awards 2019 in London on Wednesday night. Boston had been shortlisted for an award in the environmental services category – one of 20 categories competed for by councils all over the UK. Judges shortlisted the council after hearing of the myriad of initiatives taken by the council to keep the town and borough clean and tidy – combatting fly tipping and littering and encouraging recycling and reduced contamination. The council’s entry championed the work done against a backdrop of shrinking budgets and praised the successful partnerships and volunteers who help with initiatives such as Operation Fly Swat, litter enforcement, litter champions and the Big Boston Clean Up. Boston, easily one of the smallest councils in the country, was up against Bath and North East Somerset Council, Dorset County Council, East Renfreshire Council, Kent County Council with Bouygues E & S Infrastructure UK, North West Leicestershire District Council, North
Yorkshire County Council and City of York Council with Amey and Tower Hamlets London Borough Council. The winner was Dorset for an “innovative ecological approach to highway verge management”. Nick Golding, editor of the Local Government Chronicle, organisers of the national awards, said: “To be shortlisted is to be one of the nation’s most innovative councils.” He said local government requires the work of dedicated and inspirational innovators to help services withstand austerity. Cllr Michael Cooper, Leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “It is an achievement worth celebrating to have been shortlisted, and many of those represented were much bigger councils with much bigger budgets. Boston was, once again, punching well above its weight and I thank all those hard-working staff and the partners, teams and volunteers they work with for putting us on the map. “We have been lauded as one of the nation’s most innovative councils, and innovation is the name of the game when services continue to be delivered and improved in the face of austerity, cuts and reducing budgets. We do an awful lot with very little.” www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5

Farm bakery team knits for the Guide Dogs
British oven-baked dog food company, Laughing Dog, has launched a nationwide knitting challenge to help raise funds for the UK charity, Guide Dogs. Setting themselves a target of £5,000 by the end of the year, the baked dog food brand has launched a programme of fundraising events for staff and customers to get involved with throughout 2019. First up is a knitting challenge, developed by Lynn Peak and Sue Adams from the bakery team. Sue says: “We support as many charities as we can, so were delighted to be able partner with the Guide Dogs. I thought about what losing my sight would mean personally for me and while it would certainly impact my work at Laughing Dog, it would also have a big effect on my knitting. Lynn added: “Putting our enthusiasm for knitting to good
use (and our love of dogs), we are going to be knitting a very special blanket to help raise funds for the Guide Dogs. Using double knit wool to create multiple 6” squares in various different colours, our mission is to create an enormous blanket which can be divided into lots of smaller dog blankets. Some will be donated to the charity, while the rest will be auctioned off to raise money. If you love to knit and would like to lend a hand, simply pop us a message to bakery@laughingdogfood.com.” Dave Bloor from the Guide Dogs says: “We are delighted to be working with Laughing Dog Food as their new charity partner. At Guide Dogs, we want everyone who experiences sight loss to live a full and rewarding life and this partnership will make a vital contribution to our work.”

May election: Help for candidates with disabilities Standing as a candidate in the May elections should not be denied to anyone who is eligible. And support may be available for candidates who have a disability. The EnAble Fund for Elected Office is intended to cover the additional costs associated with a disability that would otherwise prevent someone from seeking office. It is provided by the Government Equalities Office and administered by Disability Rights UK. All of Boston Borough Council’s 30 seats will be up for election on Thursday, May 2, and nomination packs are now available from the Returning Officer at Municipal Buildings. Completed nomination forms must submitted to the Returning Officer by 4pm on Wednesday, April 3. This deadline is set in legislation and cannot be extended under any circumstances. They can be returned anytime between 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday, but MUST be hand delivered to the Returning Officer at Municipal Buildings. The EnAble Fund can cover the cost of the reasonable adjustments required to enable someone to stand for elected office. The overall aim of the Fund is to create a level playing field for disabled people - not to give anyone an unfair advantage. You must have a physical or mental impairment that has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on your ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. The Fund cannot pay for any costs that are not considered a reasonable adjustment, such as costs directly associated with campaigning or campaign materials; nor can it pay for any ongoing reasonable adjustments or further support if the applicant is elected. To find out more about the fund, how to apply and to discuss eligibility, please contact 0330 995 0400 and select Option 1 or email: enablefund@disabilityrightsuk.org For more information see https://www. disabilityrightsuk.org/enablefund

Advice Getting repairs done if you’re renting privately Your landlord is responsible for most major repairs to your home if you rent privately. This includes: • the structure of the property, for example walls, roof, windows and doors • sinks, baths, toilets • pipes and wiring • heating and hot water, for example the boiler • the safety of gas and electrical appliances You’ll be responsible for minor repairs, for example changing fuses and light bulbs. You’ll also have to fix anything you’ve damaged. If your home is damp, your landlord might not be responsible. It depends on what type of damp it is and what caused it. Your landlord doesn’t have to make improvements to a property, for example putting in double glazing. They might have to make reasonable adjustments - for example, if you have a disability and need a handrail to help you get upstairs. You won’t be responsible for repairs caused by other people, for example vandalism. Your tenancy agreement or statement of terms might give you extra rights, so it’s a good idea to check your paperwork Write to your landlord Write to your landlord as soon as you notice a problem. You could be held responsible if it gets worse. It’s best to put it in writing - send it to your landlord and keep a copy yourself. If a letting agent manages the property for your landlord, write to them and they should talk to your landlord. The letting agent will be responsible for making sure your landlord does the repairs. If your landlord’s responsible for the repairs, they should do them in a ‘reasonable’ amount of time. What counts as reasonable depends on the problem. For example, a broken boiler should be
fixed sooner than a leaky tap. Getting evidence You should get evidence of the problem, for example: • photos of the damage, particularly if the problem gets worse over time • any letters, texts, emails or notes of any conversations between you and your landlord or letting agent • receipts if you’ve had to replace damaged items • letters from your GP if the problem has made you ill • a copy of your tenancy agreement Keep any evidence you’ve got - you might need it later if you have to take further action to get repairs done. Unless it’s an emergency, your landlord should give you at least 24 hours’ notice if they want to visit your home to see the damage or do repairs. If your landlord won’t do the repairs Keep paying your rent. If you don’t, you’ll get into rent arrears and your landlord might then try to evict you. You can complain about your landlord or complain about your letting agent if they won’t do the repairs. If the problem is affecting your health or safety You can report your landlord to the Environmental Health department at your local council if your home is in a bad state of repair. You should do this if your home is unsafe or making you ill. This could be, for example because of: • a gas leak • a broken step • mould or damp • mice or cockroaches
You’ll need to send details of the problem in writing, for example when the problem started. Your landlord could try to evict you if you complain. If you have an assured shorthold tenancy that started after 1 October 2015, you might have more protection against being evicted. An Environmental Health Officer will look at your home and order your landlord to do repairs if they think it’s harmful to your health or safety. Keep evidence of what they say or any report they write. If your home is found to be unfit to live in, you might need to find a new place to live. Your council should get back to you quickly if the problem is severe or if someone in your home is very young, ill or elderly. If the council doesn’t take any action or doesn’t act quickly enough, you could ask them to look at their decision again - for example if you’ve got evidence that the problem is worse than they thought. If you’re still not happy with your council’s decision, you can complain. Contact your local council and ask how you can make a complaint. If your landlord still won’t fix the problem, contact Citizens Advice. For more information on this topic go to: www.citizensadvice.org.uk/ housing/renting-privately/during-your-tenancy/ dealing-with-repairs/

Bicker Preparatory School The pupils of Bicker Preparatory School were very pleased to present a cheque for £600 to LIVES. The money was raised through donations from parents and friends of the school. The cheque was presented to Mr Gordon Kirk, who had previously come to talk to the children about LIVES and the work of the voluntary organisation. The children also enjoyed learning some First Aid skills from Mr Kirk. Headteacher, Mrs Julie Miles, said, “The children enjoyed listening to Mr Kirk and understood that we are fortunate to have LIVES to help us in Lincolnshire.” Children from Nursery to Year 6 at Bicker Preparatory School and Early Years enjoyed a visit from a Fire Engine and team from Lincolnshire Fire Brigade, as well as an ambulance and team from EMAS. Children learnt all about how these services help us in Lincolnshire and how the teams work together to provide effective support in any emergency. Headteacher Mrs Julie Miles said, ‘We were extremely grateful to the fire and ambulance teams who gave their own time to come and talk to the children. The children were surprised and amazed at the variety of equipment carried on each vehicle.’
Kirton Primary School Kirton Primary School has scooped two major awards for improving educational achievement and advice and guidance for young people in making sound life choices. Nicky Donley, executive head at the school, said: “We are thrilled to have been chosen from such a strong shortlist for both awards organised by Children and Young People Now magazine, including the Wellcome Trust, London Institute of Banking and Finance, Sheffield City Council and Career Connect, to name just a few.” “The judges particularly look at work to support children with special educational needs and disabilities or disadvantaged groups such as looked-after children. Our Learn and Earn project in which we’ve created our own high street with a
bank, shop and market stall has really engaged children in this area while it has also provided all our pupils with important learning about maths, finance and the world of work. “These awards highlight the hard work and commitment of all staff, pupils and the governing body, as well as the huge support of parents. I’m extremely proud for the whole school.” The Learn and Earn project has seen the children opening their own account at the bank, create the school’s own currency, and bank and shop staff wear uniforms, plan rotas, work shifts, check pay and order stock. Children have developed sophisticated saving plans, saving for Mother’s Day or for younger siblings. Standards have risen for progress in
maths, reading and writing. Councillor Mrs Patricia Bradwell, Executive Councillor for Children’s Services, said: “The school richly deserves these awards for their innovation in teaching and learning. These projects have helped the school close the attainment gap between children who are disadvantaged and those who are not. “For the last two years, Kirton has been in the top 2% of schools in England for progress in maths, reading and writing and the top 1% for disadvantaged children. It has become a Centre of Excellence, inundated with requests for advice from schools and advisory boards across the country. They truly represent everything that is good about education in Lincolnshire.”
Boston College’s annual Apprenticeship Awards Blazing a Trail Boston College apprentices and employers enjoyed an evening of success celebrating their achievements at the Apprenticeship Awards ceremony hosted at the College’s Sam Newsom Centre. Following the theme of National Apprenticeship Week, ‘Blazing a Trail’, the annual awards event, which was sponsored by Lincolnshire Co-Op, recognises the hard work, commitment and achievements of both apprentices and employers over the past academic year. Heather Lee, Head of People and Performance at Lincolnshire CoOp said “At Lincolnshire Co-op we aim to make life better in our communities and supporting apprenticeships is a great way to do this. We were really pleased to work with Boston College to recognise local people achieving apprenticeships, supported by local employers.” Boston College currently trains over 450 apprentices, and out of these 16 apprentices were nominated to receive an ‘Apprentice of the Year’ award for outstanding achievement and progression during their apprenticeships. Jo Maher, Boston College Principal said, “I would

like to congratulate and thank all those who attended our Apprenticeship Awards, it was a great opportunity to celebrate the shared success of our hard working apprentices. They are all fantastic role models and we have every confidence that they will contribute successfully to our economic growth and prosperity. We were also delighted to be able to recognise the support and commitment shown by Lincolnshire employers towards apprenticeships. I am grateful to our staff, who have experience in the industries our apprentices are working in, enabling us to foster and develop our much valued employer relationships.” The ‘Outstanding Apprentice of the Year’ Award was presented to Harriet Ingamells, Apprentice in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Thrilled with her win, Harriet said, “I was very surprised to have received the ‘Outstanding Apprentice of the Year’ award. It has helped me feel valued within my role and boosted my confidence. I am so lucky for the support I have received from Boston College and the relationship between the College and my employer.” Fourteen employers also received a special
recognition award in a variety of categories, with a special ‘Individual Contribution to Apprenticeships’ award being presented to Tracey Robinson from Oldrids and Downtown.

Mini Police
Mini Police invitation to LCFC Junior Takeover day. Lincolnshire Mini Police is in 122 schools across our county, it is a program built around “pupil voice”. The children receive an element of learning across a 14 project curriculum and then the teams in all the schools have the opportunity to take it further with their peers and in some cases into their communities. Most schools have Mini teams of 6-10 pupils spread evenly across year groups 5 and 6 which is their last two years of primary school before making that transition onto secondary. The program is empowering and builds resilience. On the 16th February 18 Mini Police officers from across the county were given a unique opportunity to join Lincoln City Football Club for their second ever “Junior Takeover Day” where they were tasked with policing the Lincoln vs Stevenage game with various chaperones who are currently working for Lincolnshire Police in different roles. The Mini Police attended in full uniform after being selected via a random number generator and luckily we had an even spread, so able to invite 18 different children from 18 different schools spread evenly across the county. The children along with their parents joined us at Sincil Bank, home of Lincoln City Football Club since 1895 where the parents were given a ticket and able to watch the football whilst the children were left to “police” the match along with their designated officer, meaning two of the children took on the role of Gold commander
for ACC Shaun West and were interviewed on Look North. All the children started their duties by chatting to the crowds, saying hello and giving plenty of high fives, they were then treated to a birds eye view of the pitch/ ground in the control tower. After a little walk they were able to watch a drone take flight and help to control it along with one of our designated Drones officer’s in Lincolnshire, they were all amazed with how clear the ground could be seen using the cameras and it raised lot’s of thoughts and questioning about how the police could use a drone to help people in need. It was then time to go to the pitch and watch the crowd this made the Mini Police officers “tummy’s tingle” but they all said this was the most exciting part of the day. All the children involved in the day were issued with a fabulous certificate to congratulate their efforts. The Mini Police officers were brave and resilient in their duties and took the crowds in their stride, they were all very grown up and enjoyed talking with their peers from different schools about their own individual programmes and PCSO’s this hasn’t been able to happen before within the Mini Police programme. This programme is about building Ambassadors for Lincolnshire and this day certainly took a step towards that goal for the children involved. A big well done to all.

Advice Worth Hearing!
Y
ou probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life.
If I think I have a problem, how can you help? We are a privately run local family business with full time hearing centres located in Peterborough, King’s Lynn & Horncastle. We also hold day clinics at Whittlesey and Kirton Medical Centre. We are proud to have some of the

We provide independent and impartial advice and can provide a FREE hearing aid trial (with no obligation). We are able to create a personalised solution for all your hearing requirements based on lifestyle, cosmetics & importantly - budget. Our business model is based around good old fashioned values with free after- care which is second to none. What other Services do you offer? We also provide a comprehensive wax removal service through irrigation, micro suction & instrumentation. Wax removal is becoming more & more difficult to have administered through some GP surgeries and can sometimes involve frustrating & lengthy delays. We also offer advice on Tinnitus Management & provide custom solutions for noise and hearing protection. Are hearing aids big and clumsy? These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses. Most people are amazed at the size & performance of modern hearing aids. They help you hear every day sounds and make it much easier to follow conversations. Your confidence in talking to people should improve & everyday & social occasions will become less of a struggle. Some hearing aids also help reduce certain unwanted background noises & if you have tinnitus, you may find it disturbs you less when you wear a hearing aid. Some hearing aids can connect to telephones, mobile telephones, televisions, computers, IPads etc. For those that find hearing aids fiddly, there are now rechargeable solutions so batteries do not have to be changed.

We are a Hearing Care Company that is 100% dedicated and focused on hearing alone.
How can I tell if I have a hearing problem? Typical indicators include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear in noisy environments, confusing words or misunderstanding what’s being said in conversation or having to turn the T.V up. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book your FREE hearing assessment with ourselves by calling one of the numbers above, and we can then assess whether you have any degree of hearing loss.
What should I do next? The most important thing to do is not ignore it! In most cases hearing deteriorates gradually & it often affects people around you more than yourself. I
n a rare half an hour of peace (the tiny overlord is having a nap!), I find myself sitting with a cup of tea and watching the world go by through the kitchen window. I am trying to engage in a slower pace of life, so instead of cramming in an extra bit of work, I am taking the time to watch the sun shining through the clouds. I have spent the last few days emptying cupboards and cleaning which is just as ‘mindful’ for me. I’ve been on a bit of a cleaning and rearranging frenzy in the last week, and I do wonder whether my ‘nesting’ instinct has come a little late to the party. Spring cleaning for me is about letting the light and fresh air in, cleaning the skeletons from the cupboard and preparing to start the year afresh. February and March is more of a new year to me than January 1st; I am usually still in some sort of cheese coma from the Christmas holidays and the last thing I feel like doing is clearing out for a ‘new year, new me’. So, taking my own advice, I have emptied my wardrobes of their skeletons (and shoes I never wear, and clothes that will always look better on the hanger!). Fortunately, no physical skeletons were found, but plenty of ghosts hanging on in there. After dividing the contents into what can be let go and what should frame my new year, I have cleaned and essential oiled the insides before hanging back what is to be kept. Not only is
everything in there easier to find, everything smells lovely and that smug feeling of every corner having had the light bounced off it, feels good. Spring cleaning is just as much about mental health for me. Letting go of the unneeded, tidying and sorting… it’s what we should all be doing for our brains and not just in the spring. It’s good to let the light into our souls – clear away the accumulated funk, banish the shadows and see everything as it is. Just as hiding away clothes makes your wardrobe messy, hiding away emotions and living in denial is no good for anything. It takes such energy to hold on to things that are not right for you, or not meant for you. Although the initial letting go is a tsunami of emotions – anger, regret, grief, desperation…what is left is a refreshing, beautiful new perspective on what could be. This spring, I am trying to let the light filter through the whole of my home and soul. It’s difficult for me examining things so closely in the sunshine, but the renewed energy I am finding is very positive and hugely calming. This month I encourage you to spring clean your wardrobes and your mind – I can guarantee the ghosts in there are no where near as scary as you think they are.
Love Annette xx

Exciting Trends in Health and Wellness for 2019
Plant-based foods, wearable tech, MCT oils, CBD products… Trends in health and wellness over the past year have brought us an increased focus on healthy fats like ghee and coconut oil and an explosion in plant based food options and CBD oils. The future looks just as bright for 2019, with trends that show an increasing focus on full-body wellness and holistic health. Here are some trends we’re super excited to see in the health and wellness this year.
While past science on intermittent fasting has largely centered on the male experience, women are exploring the ways in which intermittent fasting can be targeted specifically to women’s health. Expect even more developments on the ways in which this protocol can be adapted for women’s bodies in 2019.

The Moss Man The Moss Man has been operating in the Skegness and Louth areas for over three years now and has built up a large customer base. With our newest operator, Adam, we now cover Boston, Woodhall Spa and Spilsby areas. We are based in Sloothby near Skegness, Lincolnshire. Through being in the building trade for many years we realised that keeping block paving weed and moss free is a real problem. For years pressure washing has been the only real option, although a wire brush with a long handle is also useful if you have the time. Neither of these options kill the weeds or moss however, they simply remove the top greenery. In the case of the weeds it leaves the roots intact ready for regrowth and in the case of the moss any spores left behind have a nice damp environment to thrive. Pressure washing can also remove the sand which the blocks are laid on making your blocks drop and causing untold damage to your driveway which, in turn, could lead to having it re-laid. We kill the weeds and treat the moss and
algae. We make sure the weeds have been killed at the root before brushing all the debris from between the block work. After all debris is removed we treat the surface to remove any algae left on the blocks. This will keep the surface of your blocks clean. We then re-treat the block paving every three months to help control the regrowth. As I’m sure you’re aware unless the blocks are maintained the weeds and moss will keep returning. We clean your drive from only £99.00. then going forward we maintain it from only £29.99 every three months. It’s cheaper than getting your windows cleaned. We are now also treating roofs without standing on them or upsetting your neighbours. If you’ve got a new roof or driveway or have recently had them cleaned, don’t let them get back to their old state
again. Let us maintain that fresh look so you don’t have to worry. We are fully qualified and insured for your piece of mind. If your roof or drive is green and you want it clean call the Moss Man for an eco-friendly gleam! Call 01754 761606 for a quote today or email adam@themossman.co.uk

Butlin’s Skegness At some 160 acres and more than 80 years old, Butlin’s Skegness is the biggest and oldest of the brands three seaside resorts – and the team working at Skegness would say it’s the best too! Just north of the town of Skegness in Ingoldmells, the resort was the first opened by Sir Billy Butlin in 1936 – his vision of guests having their own accommodation with entertainment, swimming, fairground and dining all for one price revolutionised the British seaside holiday. At a cost of some £100,000, the Skegness resort originally catered for 1,000 people with 600 chalets that had the benefits of electricity and running water – luxuries for holiday accommodation in the 30s! During World War II, the camp was subject to a short military occupation when it served as a Naval training base and became known as HMS Royal Arthur – it reverted back to being a holiday resort in 1946. Continued investment and growth now
means the Skegness resort of 2019 caters for more than 500,000 guests each year and is operational for 50 weeks of the year. So, what can day visitors to Butlin’s Skegness enjoy? Two of the key elements of Sir Billy’s original plan – swimming and a traditional fairground – are still at the heart of the resort today. The Splash Waterworld at Skegness was totally refurbished and extended in 2013. With flumes, splash pools, special sections for families and younger swimmers and an outdoor fountain area for those hot summer days, Splash Waterworld is always hugely popular with guests of all ages. The traditional fairground is clearly visible as you drive into the resort, and rides such as the carousel and the new chair o plane ride (coming for Easter 2019) allow youngsters and their parents to share great fun times together. Food Matters Teriyaki Salmon Equipment: • Large rimmed baking sheet • large mixing bowl • small saucepan.
Ingredients for 6 Servings: • 6 salmon fillets • 3 tbsp teriyaki sauce • 3 tbsp hoisin sauce • 3 tbsp soy sauce • 1 tbsp white vinegar • 1 tbsp sesame oil • 1/3 cup light brown sugar • 2 large garlic cloves, minced • 2 tsp grated ginger • Sesame seeds to garnish • Green onion, chopped
Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 200c. 2 Cover the baking sheet with foil. 3 Mix all of the sauce ingredients in a large mixing bowl and stir until the sugar has dissolved. 4 Add the salmon to the sauce, cover and let marinade for 20 minutes. 5 Gently lift the salmon out of the sauce and place on the sheet. 6 Bake for 12-15 minutes until the salmon is flaky and cooked through. 7 During cooking time, transfer the remaining sauce to a small pan. Bring it to the boil then reduce the heat and simmer until slightly thickened (3-4 minutes). 8 Remove the salmon from the oven, brush with the syrup and then sprinkle with seeds and chopped onion to taste. 22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
Fun facts: Teriyaki sauce is actually more of an American tradition than a Japanese one, according to known history. Whilst Teriyaki is thought to have originated in Japan, the sauce itself can be traced back to Japanese immigrants who settled in Hawaii.

Self Contained How to use pots and planters in your garden to your advantage
Whether you have an acreage or a balcony, using containers in your garden can be a hugely practical, or cosmetic step and can transform your green space in a way that (in my opinion), no other garden ‘accessory’ can. First of all, lets take a look at the practical aspects of using containers. Drainage is the number one priority if you are planting up a container (as opposed to using it for a water feature etc) to prevent your plant roots from drowning. If your chosen pot does not come with holes, you can drill these fairly easily yourself - 3 or 4 holes should be sufficient. Next you may want to fill the base with some shingle mixed with a few bigger stones. Make sure that these are larger than the holes you have created so that they don’t drop through. There is an argument from those who are well-versed on soil science that adding crockery or other drainage material is actually, (excuse the pun), potty. Without going into it too much, it’s all to do with the way soil drains and the natural water table. Water will drain out of the holes in the bottom of your pots whether the additional stones were there or not and it would seem they make little difference to your plants. But it would be amiss of me to not include this age-old step in our container process, simply because I know my grandad would probably turn in his grave if I decided to omit it. Back to our containers. If you have a garden with questionable soil, a pot will give you the opportunity to pick exactly the right type of compost your plant will require, allowing you to ‘mix and match’ around your garden. Without planters, you’re a bit more restricted with what you can successfully plant, and maintain. From a practical point of view, if you are limited on outside space, container gardening is perfect if you want to grow your own produce. Carrots and tomatoes will generally thrive happily in a grow bag or pot that has enough depth for the carrot to plough down, and if you have some canes or similar, tomatoes will wind their way up them and fill the air with that beautiful smell that only a tomato plant can throw off. Siting your plants is important - just because you can move a planter around doesn’t mean that the plant will be happy anywhere. Be mindful of the location required for the chosen plant and bear in mind that most vegetables will be happiest with lots of sunshine and a bit of shelter so that
24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
they don’t get hit with cold winds. You can add a bamboo screen if you’re high up - not only with this give you and your plants some protection but it will look really stylish too. A watering regime is a must for container planting as the plants won’t be able to draw on the moisture available from the ground. In hot weather, give your plants a really thorough water early in the morning or before bed. It’s important to water more than you think to ensure there is sufficient to travel down to the roots. If you want to be a bit quicker with the watering or know you’re going away, pop in an irrigation system to do them all in one go. They are easy to get hold of now from most garden centres and not too tricky to set up. Make sure you plan the layout of your containers carefully so that you have good access for watering and harvesting. I particularly like the flexibility of a container because, as I do inside my house, I like to move things around when the mood takes me. You can pretty much redesign your garden in an afternoon if you so choose. Just make sure that you use a trolley to move anything particularly heavy, or pop your pots onto wheels to trundle them around. We recently visited a café in London where they
had created a complete oasis in a courtyard with stunning ferns and palm trees in giant pots that came up to our waists. The whole effect was tropical, private and yet not one plant was in the ground. If you removed everything what you’d be left with would be a plain patio. Imagine what you could do with a small outside space and some incredible pots! Container planting is also good for those of us who want instant gratification and can’t be patient enough to wait for things to grow. You can get a tree or a bush already planted up from the garden centre. All you have to do is get it in a car and bring it home. Bear in mind that this option is going to be more expensive because you’ve allowed someone else to do the nurturing for you, but the advantage of this, particularly if you’re not very green-fingered, is that you’re likely to purchase something that is good quality and shaped well. All you have to do is get it back and continue tending for it! A Japanese Acer is a good example of a ready-made plant that works well in a container. Expect to pay several hundred pounds for a good specimen but these will add a real focal point for any outside space, particularly one made up of an array of gorgeous pottery.

New Fiesta ST Ford’s new Fiesta ST is a fearless hot hatch with a 200ps slab of power under the bonnet. It also wears a self-assured body kit and has a flashy interior with a sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel. The ST’s seats are very supportive, the view all-around is first-rate, and the eight-inch touchscreen is stressfree to use. The Fiesta ST-3 three-door variant, in the spotlight here, has enough room in the back for two adults – meaning there is a lot of space for younger children. The load area is also bigger compared with the retreating Fiesta model. At 292-litres it will just about swallow a week’s worth of shopping. The £22,895 Fiesta ST-3 gets handsome 18-inch alloy wheels, which are enhanced further with bright red brake callipers. The hatchback also comes loaded up with equipment including, heated leather Recaro seats and a heated steering wheel. There is also a lot of technology shoehorned into the Fiesta ST, which makes the car a pleasure to live with. Tech includes rear parking sensors, keyless entry and automatic air conditioning. As you would anticipate, the
regular Fiesta’s body has been jazzed up for the ST, and it is now 14 per cent stiffer due to some additional bracing on the Ford’s underside. At the rear, there is a new stiff twist-beam torsion bar, and there is a completely new steering rack at the front. These are the most radical parts of their type ever installed into an on-road performance Ford. The steering is also 14 per cent quicker than the withdrawing Fiesta ST200. What’s more, Ford Performance has added Ride Control 1 valving. What is that, you ask? Well, basically, the damping hardens when you are hammering into corners and relaxes off when you are taking it easy cruising along. Torque vectoring springs have also been built-in to give a snappier turn-in; it is all ingenious stuff for a sub-£23,000 hot-hatch. But that is not all when it comes to the Fiesta ST’s technology and engineering. For the first time, a limited slip differential has been
incorporated into the Ford, too; it’s part of the £850 Performance Package which also comprises ‘Performance Shift Lights’ and launch control. The Blue Oval’s fierce little beast fires from 0-62mph in a mere 6.5 seconds and has a maximum speed of 144mph. Furthermore, selectable motoring modes permit you to elect relaxed or sportier settings for the steering, exhaust and, of course, the accelerator. The modes - Normal, Sport and Track – each build up weight, noise and response the higher up the selection you go. In Track setting the traction control is turned off and the stability control is switched to ‘wide-slip mode’. Certainly, the fresh Ford Fiesta ST is a talented hot-hatch that represents top value performance for weekend amusement. Only its overly sensitive steering and shuddering suspension might put you off using it as your daily ride.
