Welcome to the August issue
All I have heard for the last few weeks is ‘rain, rain, go away’. Whilst we’ve had some warm days it still doesn’t feel like summer has truly arrived….it better hurry up! I cannot believe we have just celebrated my daughter’s second birthday. Time flies past so quickly when there are little ones whizzing around your feet. We visited and stayed over at CBeebies Land which was brilliant, we all had a great couple of days, even dodging the showers. Back to this months magazine – we offer advice on getting holiday ready, we look at tasty treats for the BBQ when the sunshine finally makes an appearance. We also talk about fencing options for your garden and we talk about taking time out as parents. Annette from The Village Midwives discusses the seasons of motherhood and how to weather them. Finally we explore the traditional seaside at Skegness. Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the summer holidays and catch up next month!

Lifeline transport service needs your help A lifeline service for borough residents has thrown out its own lifeline appeal. Boston Community Transport is appealing for more volunteer drivers after a shortage has led to it not being able to meet all transport requests. Currently 543 people are registered to use the crucially-important service – many socially isolated, vulnerable and older people, who do not have access to public transport, cannot afford a taxi or simply do not want to leave their homes without a trusted, friendly, familiar face to pick them up. But the normal team of 11 drivers is down to seven because of illness and one driver expecting a baby. Angela Gould, Office Manager, Boston Community Transport, said: “This week alone we have had to turn away 15 trips and, in total, 33 for the month, which we hate to do as we want to assist as many people as we can.” Anyone wishing to volunteer their services as a driver can contact Angela on 01205 360183 or email her at office@bostonct.org.uk They will be invited to attend an interview and a DBS check and
driving licence check will be carried out. Volunteers must hold a full, clean, driving licence, have fully comprehensive insurance and a roadworthy, clean vehicle and the ability to assist people in and out of the car if need be, and on occasion push a wheelchair, plus be kind and friendly. No formal qualifications are required. The drivers receive 45p per mile, which starts and finishes at their homes. Residents are charged 60p a mile, which starts and finishes at the driver’s house to cover their expenses, with 15p goes towards the charity’s running costs. There is a minimum charge of £5 for a journey of up to nine miles. Boston Community Transport was founded in May, 2004, to pick passengers up from their homes and take them to where they want to go to, in and out of the county, wait at no extra charge and drive them back home again. This could be for a doctor, dentist or hospital appointment, a trip for shopping, to visit family or other social reasons. Customers call the office where arrangements are made for them. Angela said: “The drivers get a sense of giving
back to the community. Many of our drivers are older and retired, some are home alone and love the interaction they get with the customers. We also have a young lady driver who is improving her English by speaking to more people while driving them around the county.”

cycled from Truro in Cornwall to Heckington, Lincolnshire in memory of their golfing buddy, Andy ‘Stix’ Thomas. Former RAF bandsman, Andy, (pictured right), died suddenly aged just 51, in 2018, despite the valiant efforts of LIVES first responders to save his life. Cycling golfer, Rob Cumming, said: “We wanted to do something to celebrate Andy’s life; hence the charity cycle ride from his place of birth to his adopted Lincolnshire home, plus other fundraising activities for LIVES, seemed a fitting tribute.”
“We’ve witnessed how those first few minutes can make all the difference,” added Rob. The money they’ve raised will support over 700 Community First Responders and Medics across Lincolnshire, who volunteer their time to attend 999 medical emergencies. Nikki Silver, CEO at LIVES said: “We are extremely grateful for this fantastic donation. The efforts of those who took part in the cycle ride is incredible, and the amount they’ve raised will make a real difference to LIVES and the people of Lincolnshire.”

Akela, Jayne Maddy, said “During the pick, all of our groups said that some members of the public stopped and said thank you to them, and congratulated them for doing it, which was a lovely boost. “The cubs were very surprised at the amount of rubbish they collected in just over an hour, and were horrified at the amount of cigarette ends that were chucked in the gutters. I don’t think we have any future smokers in our cub pack!” A Facebook post about their endeavours attracted a host of “well done” messages, with many shaming litter louts and expressing sadness that picking litter up from the streets should be necessary.

Rural Living Affects Health Report reveals people in Lincolnshire believe living in a rural county is a major barrier to consistent health and care. More needs to be done to improve access to NHS services in Lincolnshire – according to hundreds of people who took part in a county-wide survey. The findings, published in a report by the county’s independent health and care champion Healthwatch Lincolnshire, reveal many people are struggling to get to hospital appointments because of an increase in more distant NHS services, combined with the lack of good public transport and road links. More than 400 residents, patients and their families shared over 800 views in ‘What Would You do?’ activities, which ran from March to April to encourage people in the county to share their views about how extra money from the Government should be spent on local NHS services. The public were asked to give their views on improving local services; share their ideas on how people can live healthier lives and what improvements they think could be made to help people access services quickly. One person told the Healthwatch team: “Lincolnshire is very rural, and care is very sketchy, some excellent, some not so much. We struggle to get an appointment at the GP surgery and it’s difficult accessing services. We feel second class citizens compared to the bigger towns. Why shouldn’t care be the same throughout the country?” Another said: “It is not possible to travel more than 30 mins because of disability, pain and mobility issues. I was recently offered a quick appointment for cardiology, which was at a hospital over
one hour away, with no direct bus or train route to it. “I had no one to drive me as it was an early morning appointment. I had no option but to arrange for a local hospital appointment, which took a further three months to get and that was an urgent referral because I keep falling and knocking myself and ending up in A&E!” Other findings from the report include: • People want to be treated ‘holistically’, not just condition or illness specific • Technology needs to be embraced and developed as a ‘world class’ facility but not assumed that everyone will participate • People want more information, advice and guidance about how to make better lifestyle choices and an affordable and supportive infrastructure to achieve this • People are accepting that some health services might be delivered further from home, but they definitely want their recovery, recuperation and ongoing healthcare support delivered locally (close to home with continuity of care) • Waiting times for appointments need to be reduced • Diagnosis and test results needs to be much quicker • Services need to be much more visually joined up, this also includes ‘strategies’ from any of our statutory bodies that impact on the local population. Sarah Fletcher, Chief Executive at Healthwatch Lincolnshire, said: “The Government is investing an additional £20 billion a year in the NHS as part of the NHS Long Term Plan. We were asked to help find out what local people thought was the best way for the NHS in Lincolnshire to invest in the right services as part of this plan.”

info@simplybosto I have my fingers (and toes) crossed for another gold for Boston following the visit by the Royal Horticultural Society in-bloom judges. Whatever the result – it would be brilliant for Boston to get a fifth gold on the trot – I am in awe of the team for working so hard throughout the year to give us the best chance of holding the title and for continuing to work hard for our town. It takes a special kind of commitment and selfless act to turn out in all weathers, work on bended knees, with dirt under their nails and not even for their own gardens. I cannot thank and praise our volunteers enough, who have come

from all walks of life and now number in excess of 100. This demonstrates how they really care about our local environment, and helps make it better for all who live, visit, shop and work in Boston. Together with partner agencies, such as Transported, North Sea Camp, Thistles and our own borough parks and grounds team they make a real difference to benefit all our lives. Ever since 2012, when Boston became involved with the in-bloom enterprise, they have made continuous improvements to the environment at all levels, not least the profusion of colourful plants and flowers, which, I think you can agree, brightens the place up.
n Boston in Bloom volunteers planting up raised beds at Boston Railway Station as part of the Gateway to Boston project.
6 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
Over the years a committed team with brilliant leadership has evolved, involving children from local schools, other charitable groups and organisations and businesses, all with a common interest in helping make Boston better. All the long-standing improvements are too numerous to mention, but some which come readily to mind are the wild flower meadows which we didn’t have before, numerous planters of all shapes and sizes all across town, clean-ups and improvements to Custom House Quay with its buoy, mast and flags, Doughty Quay and Pilgrims’ Patch, the garden created at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex and near the town centre B&M store, the art deco garden and sculpture in Central Park, the knot gardens and borders in the Stump grounds and the raised beds alongside the river near the police station. Volunteers have also worked hard cleaning the town bridge, at Witham Way Country Park, in Boston Cemetery and Memorial Gardens. Schools, such as Boston West Academy and Haven High, have worked hard to be involved and pubs have been able to enter their own local in-bloom competition. This year’s efforts have included perennial plantings, urban pollinatorfriendly borders, preparations to mark Mayflower 400, “gateway to Boston” improvements at the railway station and plans for a maritime heritage tour of town featuring redundant Wash buoys which artists are working with. The results will be announced early in the autumn. If there is any justice it will be a fifth gold and I
am confident the hard working and dedicated volunteers have done us proud and it will remain with us. Regardless of the result I am so thankful to our wonderful, dedicated team. All of this complements the work the council and the Boston Town Area Committee (BTAC) have been doing to improve public amenity areas. Play area improvements valued at £40,000 have been approved, to include a pirate ship for Woodville Road play area. We have some beautiful open spaces around Boston and to be able to develop some of them further for our younger generation is fantastic. A pirate ship will be a great new addition for all ages to enjoy and I know my children will certainly love to play on this when it is installed. St John’s Park is to get musical play panels and goal posts and Shelton’s Field will receive a higher slide, four tower units with two bridges, a play-and-stay net and a crazy scrambler springer. Shelton’s Field and Burgess Pit have been pictures of wildlife loveliness. The area in Burgess Pit began life as a community orchard, and there are plums, pears, apples and damson, and the young fruit will be ready for picking and eating when they grow and ripen. The addition of wild flower seeds has seen pollinator-insect friendly oxeye daisy, corncrake, buttercups and poppies and teasel, which h the birds love, flourish. Again thank you to everyone for the continuous help and efforts for our town and let’s hope we gain the result we deserve this autumn.

Advice
Pregnancy and Discrimination at Work “I’m 3 months pregnant and just beginning to show, so last week I thought I’d sit down with my manager and let them know before any speculation could take place. My manager was really happy for me, but this week I’ve been pulled aside and told they’re letting me go due to poor performance. I’ve worked here for 2 years and never had any negative feedback so I don’t understand. Could they be sacking me just for being pregnant? Is this legal?” It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been working for your employer, being fired because of pregnancy, or pregnancy-related issues, is automatically classed as unfair dismissal. Although your employer said you were being sacked for poor performance, you’re right to be suspicious as this only came to light after you told your manager about your pregnancy. If your employer says your dismissal has nothing to do with you having a baby, you will need to prove that it was. You can ask your employer to send you written reasons for your dismissal. As you have been employed for two years, your employer can only dismiss you for specified fair reasons, such as gross misconduct or persistent poor performance. Except in the most serious cases of gross misconduct, your employer will be expected to follow a fair process and show the dismissal was for a fair reason. There are 2 ways you might be able to challenge your dismissal: • appealing through your employer’s appeal process • making a claim to an employment tribunal - if you have a genuine unfair dismissal claim and have worked for your employer for more than 2 years Before you appeal to your employer, you need to think carefully about whether you really want your job back. For most people, finding a new job as quickly as possible is the best way to move on from being dismissed. If you were dismissed for an ‘automatically unfair’ reason or you were discriminated against, you can make a claim to a tribunal no matter how long you’ve worked for your employer. You should contact your nearest Citizens Advice if you’re considering challenging your dismissal - an
adviser can help you work out if you have a genuine claim, and your chances of winning it. Appealing your dismissal with your employer You can try speaking with your employer to see if they will consider other options, like extra training or completing a probationary period. If you’re not comfortable speaking to your employer alone, you can get help from a trade union or other organisations. They can go to meetings with you and help negotiate with your employer. If your company has an appeal process, you can formally appeal your dismissal. Check your intranet or staff handbook, or speak to HR to see what you need to do. Start your appeal as soon as you can, as there’s a time limit if you later want to take legal action. The first step to legal action is a process called ‘early conciliation’ - you need to start it within 3 months less 1 day of the day you’re dismissed. If you’re running out of time, you can start early conciliation even if your appeal hasn’t finished. Even if you win your appeal, returning to your job might not be the best outcome for you. For example it might be better to leave with a good reference than stay in a job where you don’t feel fairly treated. Get help from Acas and ‘early conciliation’ If you’ve appealed or your employer doesn’t have an appeal process, you might be able to get help from an organisation called Acas. They’ll see if your employer will agree to a free process called ‘early conciliation’ - a way to resolve disputes without going to a tribunal. Get in touch with Acas as soon as you can - even if you don’t go through early conciliation, you need
to have notified Acas before you can make a tribunal claim. You only have 3 months less a day from being dismissed to begin early conciliation or tell Acas you intend to make a tribunal claim. You can fill in the form on the Acas website or call the Acas helpline to see if they can help with your situation. Acas Website: http://www.acas.org.uk Early conciliation helpline: 0300 123 1122 Deciding if you should make a tribunal claim Taking your employer to a tribunal is the final way you can challenge your dismissal. Tribunals can stressful, and you might not win your case. Before making a claim, you need to have: • already notified Acas • got an early conciliation certificate from Acas You might get some compensation if the tribunal rules in your favour. Any compensation will usually be based on your weekly pay. The tribunal will look at whether your employer acted reasonably under the law. For example, if your employer dismissed you for being aggressive, the tribunal will look to see if the decision to dismiss you was reasonable - not whether you were aggressive. You only have 3 months less a day from being dismissed to begin early conciliation or tell Acas you intend to make a claim to an employment tribunal, so contact your nearest Citizens Advice straight away if you’re thinking about making a claim. You’ll need to show the tribunal evidence that your employer didn’t have a fair reason for dismissing you.

Mini Police
The Mini Police program is written and delivered in such a way as to encourage and promote children to engage in their communities and to be ambassadors for good citizenship. This is happening across the county on a daily basis, with our Mini Police (and other children) doing ‘above and beyond’ to make their small part of the world a better place, from offering stickers to children for awesome playground behavior to going out into their community and engaging with the public, delivering the knowledge they have gained from our Mini Police curriculum where it matters most – their community. This really came to light recently in Wainfleet near Skegness. The River Steeping near Wainfleet burst its banks after more than double the average monthly rainfall fell in 3 days. As a result, the RAF, Police, Fire & Rescue and other services pulled together and the flood was contained. Hundreds of residents were evacuated and properties were left under water. The local primary school, The Magdalen Church of England / Methodist Primary School was closed for a week as a result. Pupils from the school, including some of our 8 Mini Police, volunteered to help with the flood recovery work, with some filling sandbags whilst others canoed (yes canoed) bottled water and supplies to residents trapped by floodwater. I was privileged to join the Mini Police team with their local PCSO Jayne Richardson and teacher Mrs. Wood as the Mini Police had a day of community engagement during the recovery phase of the flooding. The Mini Police met and learnt about the flooding and the response from Environment Agency staff, learning how the flooding was stopped and the support available to the local
community. They had the opportunity to look at the resources available including CCTV and drones, giving them enough information to be able to inform others about what happened and what is going on in response to it. They were joined by Assistant Chief Constable Shaun West and carried out a community litter pick, working with East Lindsay District Council to clean up any flood-related and general litter around the town. The Mini Police also delivered crime prevention advice, providing ‘No Cold Calling’ stickers and information to residents. They were fantastic at explaining the issue and how to combat it. Mini Police also found time to call in at a local residential care home, dropping off some biscuits and treats donated to the town. It was fantastic to witness 9, 10 and 11 year old children explain in great detail what happened, what was done to stop it and how the town was recovering
as a result. Building these kinds of relationships based on trust and respect between generations is a vital part of our community engagement strategy, and it was amazing to witness. The Magdalen Primary Mini Police were a fantastic example of community engagement, with them planning on assemblies to be able to share their learning with the rest of their school, making sure that all of the children (and therefore their families) were kept informed. Our Lincolnshire Mini Police program is all inclusive, and it is great to celebrate and showcase the amazing work our teams do across the county. It all comes down to what can be done when a community pulls together, and I wanted to highlight how the Mini Police we have grown now form part of an amazing group of people out there with one message – ‘We are here to help’.
The Mini Police program in Lincolnshire is expanding – if you know of a school who may want to join the program, please email us: mini.police@lincs.pnn.police.uk and one of our team will be in touch.

There the Downworlders buy and sell magical objects, make dark bargains, and whisper secrets they do not want the Nephilim to know. Through two centuries, however, there has been a frequent visitor to the Shadow Market from the City of Bones. otherhood is the biggest gamble in the world. It’s the glorious life force. It’s huge and scary and an act of infinite optimism. I read somewhere today that it’s also one of life’s great contradictions. Loneliness and the need to be left alone, happy and exhausted, so ‘into it’ and so ‘over it’, so visionary and so withdrawn all at the same time. Until you’ve had a child, no one can prepare you for the vast array of emotions that you feel. Yes, they can tell you, and yes you can empathise what exhaustion feels like, but living the experience is the only way to turn your empathy into understanding. Even when you understand it, it’s not always easy to live with it or reconcile it with your new life as someone’s parent. You might love your children, but you might not want to have to deal with the baggage that brings with it. I like to think about motherhood (and life generally) in seasons. What I’ve realised is that every season will have both challenges and blessings unique to that season. It is helpful (although easier said than done) to articulate the challenges and then choose to focus on the blessings. One of the challenges of the baby/toddler years is frustration. You rise in the morning, get the house picked up, children fed, and by evening it’s all undone again. If someone were to ask you, “What did you accomplish today?” your response might be, “Nothing … I just got through it.” This sense of frustration caused by a lack of accomplishment is truly hard for those of us who are Type A
women. And it’s really hard if you have come home part-time or full-time from an exciting job where there is a sense of accomplishment. Other common challenges of motherhood that we all feel are: • Staying connected with myself separate from my role as a mother. • LETTING GO. Letting go of everything: ideas about time, ideas about achievement, ideas about perfection, ideas about motherhood. • Filling each day. Loneliness. Feeling like I’m doing enough to stimulate my baby. • Fatigue. Not having the time and energy to care for myself. • Isolation. Missing adult conversation. • Motherhood can be lonely and overwhelming. There just isn’t enough support. It’s hard not living up to expectations. • Knowing whose advice to take, what book to listen to. • Knowing what to do with my baby, making sure that I’m stimulating him enough. • Feeling like I’m fulfilling my duties as a Mum and staying at home: keeping the house tidy and cooking with a baby. • Connecting with other “like” women. Smaller casual encounters are needed to form stronger bonds and make real friends. Just like the seasons, all things change eventually. Even when you feel you will be stuck in your current season forever, things will change. The only constant in life and motherhood is change. As my grandmother used to say; this too will pass.
Love Annette xx

Pollywiggle Cottage Pollywiggle Cottage is a charming 3 bedroom Victorian cottage in the popular coastal village of Heacham available for short breaks and holidays. Just over an hour’s drive away it really is the gateway to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.
T
he cosy cottage built in 1882 sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (king, double & bunk) plus we have a cot for a baby. We welcome well behaved dogs and have tried to supply everything you will need for babies and pets - travel cot, high chair, baby monitor, dog crate, dog bowls etc. On sunny days the south facing enclosed garden is a great place to relax with table and chairs as well as a BBQ. Or on those winter nights you can warm up in front of the open fire. There is also complementary wifi & parking to the rear of the property. All prices include a full clean before and after your visit as well as linen and towels - you will just need your bikini and beach towels! The Local Area Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. It’s a 20-30 minute stroll along the promenade into Hunstanton where you will find an array of restaurants, amusements, fair rides, SeaLife Centre, swimming pool and much more. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern
England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, McColls, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast. Pollywiggle Cottage is always well reviewed and every tripadvisor rating is either 4 or 5 stars! Here’s what our guests say: “Stayed for 4 nights in April with 13 month old daughter and our dog. Perfect little cottage in a handy location. Well equipped for babies, with high chair, travel cot, video monitor, black out blind and even toys! Shops, bakery, butchers, Indian/Chinese/ chippy takeaways all in walking distance as is the beach. Handy to have its own parking (all be it a bit tight for two cars). Nice safe enclosed garden for the dog and dog bowls & blankets provided. We even got amazing weather! Thank you.” “We have just returned from another wonderful weekend at the beautiful Pollywiggle cottage. We found the owners really have thought of everything you may need to make the stay feel like home from home. If your traveling with children they have all the essentials and more! There’s a toy box in the children’s room which kept our 3 entertained for hours. A baby monitor, stair gates, blackout blind, bed
rail.. you name it, it’s there! They even have the fur babies covered too with dog bowls, crates and balls! The cottage is very clean and tastefully decorated. We loved having the open fire roaring away on a cold winter evening! It really is the perfect place to warm up and relax with a glass of wine after a chilly afternoon walking on the beach. There are a few pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. We can highly recommend the Spice garden for an evening meal and the Bushel and Strike for a pint. The Bushel is very dog friendly and has a children’s playground. We would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return in the summer.” “Second stay at the property. It’s just so cosy and lovely. Great location and the owner is very friendly and helpful. Perfect for a break away with your dogs. Quiet comfortable and clean :-) planning to go back next year too. Love it Thanks for the goody bags too much appreciated and really made it extra special!” “Lovely cottage with all the cosy extras (log fire/ blankets/ lighting ) with modern touches. Very clean and well-kept and with a parking space at the rear, with plenty more road parking close by. It is within walking distance of a number of pubs and beaches. Sleep 2 x Doubles and Bunk (3 Bedrooms) Welcoming for all ages and 2 fur babies.. (dogs). I will be returning again in the new year. Nice to find a clean wellpresented accommodation that makes you feel like it is “home from home”.

Time Out For Parents Babies and children, young and old, are allconsuming. It’s easy to lose track of yourself, not to mention your relationship. But it’s a pretty safe bet it took two to bring your baby into the world, and the two of you need to nurture yourselves as well as your youngster. Sure, for those early few months, you’re in a baby bubble – and rightly so. The last thing you probably feel like doing is leaving your fledgling, especially if you’re nursing. You’ll know when the time is right. And when you feel ready, you’re spoilt for choice! Let’s focus on parents of older ones first. How about a nice evening meal out, just the two of you, or with friends? A restaurant that is significant to you both as a couple, like the venue of your first date or marriage proposal maybe? Older children are more likely to lay in (at least until 6am!), making a meal out and then even a drink or two afterwards something to consider. A stay in a hotel
16 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
or nice B&B could be on the cards if you speak to your babysitter nicely. Catch a show/band/sports event, or just enjoy a city break and a scenery change. Spas offer some wonderful treatments and pampering packages for couples. What better way to reconnect than being totally relaxed? Are you able to persuade your sitter to stay the course for a couple of nights, so you can have a mini break or rent a cottage as a couple? Some of your unmarried friends may be embarking on stag or hen weekends. As long as your partner is happy to take on childcare duties for the duration, you’re good to go – and have a great time! If your littlies are loath to let you leave for long, or you have no one to look after them, could you catch a couple of hours together when they are at nursery? Maybe watch a matinee? Lunch at one of our lovely local restaurants or pubs? Afternoon tea
out is a great way to spend quality time together, enjoy eating delicious treats and to reconnect as a couple. Even an hour spent with your significant other, chatting over coffee and cake, can be just the job. If you’re both into exercise, how about working out together for an hour or so? You can be back before your baby (big or small!) has a chance to miss you. You had a life before you became a mum, and it’s really important to rediscover your old self, your relationship with your significant other, and also with your friends. Take it from two partners in crime (read: middle-aged sisters and mums of a boy and a girl each), who rediscovered their love of watching live bands together when their kids hit school age, and their husbands offered to take over childcare duties during their weekend road trips. Time spent with your children is precious and a blessing – even more so when you’ve had a bit of time to yourself.

Health & Beauty
Be Safe in The Sun If you’re heading to the sun over the summer then taking precautions in the heat iis vital. Here is what the NHS has to say about sunburn, suncreams and SPFs.
Sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer. Sunburn does not just happen on holiday. You can burn in the UK, even when it’s cloudy. There’s no safe or healthy way to get a tan. A tan does not protect your skin from the sun’s harmful effects. Aim to strike a balance between protecting yourself from the sun and getting enough vitamin D from sunlight. Sun safety tips Spend time in the shade when the sun is strongest. In the UK, this is between 11am and 3pm from March to October. Make sure you: • spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm • make sure you never burn • cover up with suitable clothing and sunglasses • take extra care with children
• use at least factor 30 sunscreen What factor sunscreen (SPF) should I use? Do not rely on sunscreen alone to protect yourself from the sun. Wear suitable clothing and spend time in the shade when the sun’s at its hottest. When buying sunscreen, the label should have: • a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 to protect against UVB • at least 4-star UVA protection UVA protection can also be indicated by the letters “UVA” in a circle, which indicates that it meets the EU standard. Make sure the sunscreen is not past its expiry date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of 2 to 3 years. Do not spend any longer in the sun than you would without sunscreen.
What are the SPF and star rating? The sun protection factor, or SPF, is a measure of the amount of ultraviolet B radiation (UVB) protection. SPFs are rated on a scale of 2 to 50+ based on the level of protection they offer, with 50+ offering the strongest form of UVB protection. The star rating measures the amount of ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) protection. You should see a star rating of up to 5 stars on UK sunscreens. The higher the star rating, the better. The letters “UVA” inside a circle is a European marking. This means the UVA protection is at least a third of the SPF value and meets EU recommendations. Sunscreens that offer both UVA and UVB protection are sometimes called broad spectrum.. How to apply sunscreen Most people do not apply enough sunscreen. As a guide, adults should aim to apply around: • 2 teaspoons of sunscreen if you’re just covering your head, arms and neck
18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
• 2 tablespoons if you’re covering your entire body while wearing a swimming costume If sunscreen is applied too thinly, the amount of protection it gives is reduced. If you’re worried you might not be applying enough SPF30, you could use a sunscreen with a higher SPF. If you plan to be out in the sun long enough to risk burning, sunscreen needs to be applied twice: • 30 minutes before going out • just before going out Sunscreen should be applied to all exposed skin, including the face, neck and ears, and head if you have thinning or no hair, but a widebrimmed hat is better. Sunscreen needs to be reapplied liberally and frequently, and according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This includes applying it straight after you have been in water, even if it’s “water resistant”, and after towel drying, sweating or when it may have rubbed off. It’s also recommended to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, as the sun can dry it off your skin.

The Moss Man The Moss Man has been operating in the Skegness and Louth areas for over three years now and has built up a large customer base. With our newest operator, Adam, we now cover Boston, Woodhall Spa and Spilsby areas. We are based in Sloothby near Skegness, Lincolnshire. Through being in the building trade for many years we realised that keeping block paving weed and moss free is a real problem. For years pressure washing has been the only real option, although a wire brush with a long handle is also useful if you have the time. Neither of these options kill the weeds or moss however, they simply remove the top greenery. In the case of the weeds it leaves the roots intact ready for regrowth and in the case of the moss any spores left behind have a nice damp environment to thrive. Pressure washing can also remove the sand which the blocks are laid on making your blocks drop and causing untold damage to your driveway which, in turn, could lead to having it re-laid. We kill the weeds and treat the moss and
algae. We make sure the weeds have been killed at the root before brushing all the debris from between the block work. After all debris is removed we treat the surface to remove any algae left on the blocks. This will keep the surface of your blocks clean. We then re-treat the block paving every three months to help control the regrowth. As I’m sure you’re aware unless the blocks are maintained the weeds and moss will keep returning. We clean your drive from only £99.00. then going forward we maintain it from only £29.99 every three months. It’s cheaper than getting your windows cleaned. We are now also treating roofs without standing on them or upsetting your neighbours. If you’ve got a new roof or driveway or have recently had them cleaned, don’t let them get back to their old state
again. Let us maintain that fresh look so you don’t have to worry. We are fully qualified and insured for your piece of mind. If your roof or drive is green and you want it clean call the Moss Man for an eco-friendly gleam! Call 01754 761606 for a quote today or email adam@themossman.co.uk

Butlin’s Skegness At some 160 acres and more than 80 years old, Butlin’s Skegness is the biggest and oldest of the brands three seaside resorts – and the team working at Skegness would say it’s the best too! Just north of the town of Skegness in Ingoldmells, the resort was the first opened by Sir Billy Butlin in 1936 – his vision of guests having their own accommodation with entertainment, swimming, fairground and dining all for one price revolutionised the British seaside holiday. At a cost of some £100,000, the Skegness resort originally catered for 1,000 people with 600 chalets that had the benefits of electricity and running water – luxuries for holiday accommodation in the 30s! During World War II, the camp was subject to a short military occupation when it served as a Naval training base and became known as HMS Royal Arthur – it reverted back to being a holiday resort in 1946. Continued investment and growth now
means the Skegness resort of 2019 caters for more than 500,000 guests each year and is operational for 50 weeks of the year. So, what can day visitors to Butlin’s Skegness enjoy? Two of the key elements of Sir Billy’s original plan – swimming and a traditional fairground – are still at the heart of the resort today. The Splash Waterworld at Skegness was totally refurbished and extended in 2013. With flumes, splash pools, special sections for families and younger swimmers and an outdoor fountain area for those hot summer days, Splash Waterworld is always hugely popular with guests of all ages. The traditional fairground is clearly visible as you drive into the resort, and rides such as the carousel and the new chair o plane ride allow youngsters and their parents to share great fun times together. Of course, every Butlin’s fairground includes dodgem cars – Sir Billy Butlins first brought them to the UK in the 30s – and guests can
At a cost of some £100,000, th e Skegness resort originally catered for 1,000 people wi th 600 chalets that had th e benefi ts of electrici ty and running water – luxuries for holiday accommodation in th e 30s! still enjoy the fun of this fairground classic today. There is plenty more for day visitors to enjoy: a good tip is to head for the Skyline Pavilion at the heart of the resort, where shows featuring the likes of the Teletubbies, Mr Men Little Miss and Butlin’s own Skyline Gang will delight the youngsters. With an ice cream parlour, restaurants and bars, a day visit to Butlin’s Skegness has got everything covered – and remember, it’s even got its own very sandy beach!

Fencing
There’s a new kid on the block!
Natural wood has long been the preeminent material for residential landscape fencing. Easy to cut and assemble, widely available, and relatively affordable, wood fencing can be adapted to just about any landscape style and is a relatively easy material for DIYers to work with. Its natural appeal has made wood the first choice for most homeowners for many years. But recent years have seen a newly manufactured contender enter the arena. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) plastic is a petroleum-based product that has a variety of uses in the building trades, and one of its recent adaptations is for landscape fencing materials.
Products Made from the same plastic that is used in white plastic plumbing pipes, PVC is gradually becoming widely used in fencing materials. Some DIY stores now stock PVC fencing components as well as preassembled panels in a limited range of colours. The first PVC fences were simple white plastic panels with shiny surfaces—not very natural looking— but additional colours have now been introduced, including brown wood tones. Some PVC fencing is now even textured to resemble wood. These days, nearly any fencing style can be constructed in PVC. A point-by-point comparison between PVC and traditional wood will help you decide if PVC is the right option for your fence.
26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
Appearance Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and nowhere is this truer than with landscape fences. Most people will find real wood to be more attractive than PVC plastic fencing, thanks in large part to wood’s flexibility. Wood is an adaptable material that can be left to weather naturally, or it can be stained or painted however you want. A wood fence can be custom-built to make it quite unique to your landscape, and it can readily be adapted to uneven building sites. Vinyl, on the other hand, tends to look best where it tries to mimic the look of a traditional white-painted fence, but even here it is hard to fully overcome the artificial look. Older vinyl fences and less expensive new products have a shiny surface that looks somewhat artificial. As PVC fences weather, the shininess may give way to a chalky coating that dulls the look of the fence. It is hard to get a “designer” look when building with mass-produced PVC panels. One advantage that PVC owns is that its colour will not change and it will not require repainting, as does wood. Except for dirt and moss, white PVC fencing will stay white, year after year after year. Of course, this can also be a drawback—once you’ve installed your PVC fence, you are stuck with its appearance and colour for its lifetime. Unlike wood, PVC cannot
be easily painted a different colour if you want to change its appearance. Some of PVC’s liabilities are gradually being removed as manufacturers offer additional colours and have now introduced textures into their products. And add-on features like lattice panels and shaped post caps are making PVC fences a bit less utilitarian than they once were. One option if you want a betterlooking fence that still has some of the advantages of vinyl is a wood-composite fence. Made from the same blend of wood fibres and plastic resins as used in synthetic decking, these fence products are very durable and stable. However, wood-composite fencing is not cheap—expect to pay at least twice as much as for a PVC or wood fence. Ease of Installation Both wood and vinyl fences typically come out better when installed by a professional fence company. For any type of fence, digging post holes and setting posts
is a very difficult task. Typically fence posts should be buried to at least one-third of their length. After that, the posts must be set in concrete. Multiply this task by 20 fence posts, and you can see why so many homeowners hand this job off to a fencing contractor. But if you are a dedicated DIYer, vinyl fencing is actually a bit easier to work with than wood, since the posts and panels are considerably lighter than wood posts and panels. Many PVC fence products are designed for easy assembly, with posts that are notched to accept rails and matching panel brackets available. As with any large project, working slowly and in discrete stages will make the work easier. Plan to take your time, and be especially diligent in the layout and when installing the posts. Remember that both wood and vinyl fencing installations can sometimes require planning approval so always speak to the local planning office before committing to a large job.
