to raise achievement for all.
Welcome to the December issue
What a contrast this year is to last. I remember feeling pretty good that by this time I was organised with my presents and plans for Christmas but this year I feel a little bit nervous at the prospect it is only a few weeks away. We seem to have a busy few weeks ahead and that’s not to mention the addition of my son starting school and all the festivities that go on there! In the office this month Rosie is celebrating a big birthday so we have enjoyed cake…A LOT! Happy Birthday to you! We also had a fabulous time at The Crystal Ball at Springfields exhibition Centre in Spalding for our Christmas Party, what a great night was put on by the committee. Back to the December issue and this month we are looking at all things festive, Laura has some yummy Christmas recipes in food & drink, we help you navigate the works Christmas party without drama and many local businesses are taking the opportunity to wish you a Happy Christmas. Tim this month tests the Toyota Corolla Touring Sports, if you’re looking for a new family car then this could be the one for you! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and wishing you a very Merry Christmas!

LIVES launch 2020 Charity Calendar with Ringrose Law
We are delighted to announce the release of the 2020 LIVES Calendar. The Lincolnshire Village Life Calendar has been put together by LIVES and local Solicitors Ringrose Law over the last few months. The calendar features images entered by the public of shots of Lincolnshire Village Life and and today was officially launched at a presentation at the International Bomber Command Centre.
In 2018 alone LIVES attended 15,000 medical emergencies across Lincolnshire. They estimate 1 in 5 people in Lincolnshire have been helped by one of their responders in the last 15 years. In 2020 LIVES will be celebrating their 50 year anniversary. Nikki Cooke, CEO of LIVES comments; “We’re so grateful to receive support from Ringrose Law for another fantastic LIVES calendar.
Each year we need to raise over £1 million in order to fund 700 Community First Responder across Lincolnshire. We hope this calendar can help raise much needed funds as we enter our 50th year.” Alex Bennett, Marketing Manager at Ringrose Law comments on the calendar; “The calendar looks absolutely fantastic, and the quality of the images is superb. We thank everyone involved in the project and
now want to try and sell as many copies of the calendar as we can to raise money for LIVES.” The Calendar is now on sale across Lincolnshire at various outlets and at all Ringrose Law offices. The team will also be out and about at various Christmas markets over the next few weeks selling the calendar so please look out for it or alternatively go to www. lives.org.uk/2020-calendar to order a copy online.
Help pack Santa’s suitcase Travel agents are calling on customers to help pack Santa’s Suitcase with gifts, to bring holiday spirit for local charities to share with the people they support in the run-up to Christmas. A variety of local groups are being supported by Lincolnshire Co-op travel branches including foodbanks, children’s charities and community larders. Items which are needed for the appeal range from small toys and books to canned food and toiletry gift sets. The donations will then be
4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
handed to each charity in time for Christmas. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Travel Group Manager Travel Wayne Dennett said he hopes lots of the branches’ customers will get behind the appeal. “These groups provide a valued service making life better for vulnerable people in our communities,” he said. “We hope the gifts and items we’re collecting through the Santa’s Suitcase campaign will help those who may be struggling this festive season.”
The campaign is running until Friday 6th December. To find out more about the appeal and how to donate, contact your local travel branch. The majority of Lincolnshire Co-op’s food stores also have collection points for local food banks and community larders. Customers can donate packets, tins and dried food by leaving items inside a marked collection bin at these stores.
Pirate Ship Opens Families attended Woodville Road play area for the opening of a fantastic Pirate Ship. The ship stands proud for all to see and is the largest piece of play equipment to be installed in the Borough of Boston. With three levels of play to experience from under the boat where hammocks swing and port holes bring imaginative play to younger children, to the middle and top decks that have scramble nets, a slide, fireman’s pole, a zip line and other exciting features for the more daring it really enhances this play area by bringing a whole new dimension of play. It was designed by Kompan and built over five days by Thompson Groundworks just in time for children to enjoy over the half-term school holidays and beyond This is part of the investment made in many play areas in Boston over the last three years by Boston Borough Council, Boston Town Area Committee, Boston Big Local (BBL) and Local Hope. These have included a wheelchair swing, slides, football posts, outdoor gym equipment, trim trails, various toddler play houses, basketball hoops and much more. Fran Taylor, Boston Borough Council’s play and physical activity officer said: “The Pirate Ship is the icing on the cake and offers a whole new opportunity of challenging and exciting play. With over 40 different play values for ages 4 to 14 year olds. “Children and young people are really excited at being given this amazing play space which could accommodate up to 40 children at once giving many different play opportunities. “Comments from those attending the opening proved that the Pirate Ship was a huge success and many children and parents gave their thanks personally to the representatives of the funders that attended for enabling this project to be delivered.” Chairman of Boston Big Local, Richard Tory, said: “We are really pleased to have played our part in funding this project. Just seeing how much the children appreciate it is wonderful to see and hear. “It really does help demonstrate that our BBL goals are set correctly for the BBL area, because this project covers three or four of our themes – Health and Wellbeing, A More Attractive Environment and Build Community Spirit. “This is something we have wanted to
do for some time and we could not have actioned this without the support of the council, BTAC, their open spaces subcommittee and of course Fran. “What a fantastic example of
collaboration to deliver an extremely worthwhile project that has bought so much fun, gratitude and excitement from both the children and the grown-ups who are supporting their play on the pirate ship.” www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5
Advice
Reporting Fake or Counterfeit Goods If you’ve brought an item that is fake or counterfeit, you have the legal right to a refund. You can also report the seller to Trading Standards or report the seller for fraud. Trading Standards might take legal action against the seller, but they can’t help you to get your money back. The amount of time that you have to get a refund from the seller depends on if you purchased the item before or after October 2015. If you bought the item before the 1st October 2015, you have the legal right to a refund within a ‘reasonable’ time of you buying the item. The law isn’t very specific on how long you have, but if you’re confident in your approach you should be entitled to a refund within the first two months or so. However, If you paid for the item over 2 months ago, you’re legally entitled to a partial refund depending on how much you’ve used the item and how long you’ve had it. You’ll have to negotiate with the seller to agree on a fair price. The seller can also give you a genuine version of the item to replace the fake one. When contacting the seller, it is important to say that you have a right to a refund under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, because the item that you purchased doesn’t match its description. If you brought the item on, or after, the 1st October 2015 you’re legally entitled to a full refund on fake goods within 30 days of paying for them. If it’s been over 30 days but less than 6 months since you paid, the seller is legally able to give you a real version of the item to replace the fake one. However, if they can’t provide a replacement, they’re legally required to give you a refund (up until 6 months after you paid for it). If you paid for the item more than 6 months ago, you’re entitled to a part-refund depending on how much you’ve used the
item and how long you’ve had it. It’s harder to do this after 6 months as you could be asked to prove that the item is a fake - try talking to the real brand and asking them to inspect it. When seeking a refund, it is important to say that you have a right to a refund under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, because this item doesn’t match its written/verbal description. The seller of the items may argue that the items in question were obviously fake because they were very cheap. They can say you must have known it wasn’t the real thing and use that as a reason not to give your money back. However, they’re breaking the law by selling fake items and your legal rights still apply. If you paid for the item by debit card, you should contact your bank and ask for a refund under the chargeback scheme. If you paid by credit card and the item cost less than £100, you can also contact your credit card company and use the chargeback scheme. However, if you paid for an item by credit card that cost between £100 and £30,000, contact your credit card company and say you want to make a Section 75 claim to get your money back. If you paid by Paypal, use Paypal’s online resolution centre to report the dispute, however, you must do so within 180 days of paying for an item. Trading Standards investigates criminal activity and prosecute sellers and traders
who break the law. You’re not legally obliged to report someone selling fake goods, but it might stop other people accidentally buying fakes from them in future. As well as reporting them to Trading Standards, you can also report the trader to ActionFraud. You’re under no obligation to do this, but they will register the trader on the national fraud database, which helps them understand the scale of fraud across the UK. You can report online at www.actionfraud. police.uk or call them on 0300 123 2040.
For further information about reporting fake or counterfeit goods, your rights and potential options available to you, contact your nearest Citizens Advice to speak to a trained assessor/adviser or ring the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06. Alternatively, you can call Adviceline on 03444 111 444, or use either the Citizens Advice email or webchat services

Mini Police Scam Awareness is one of the Lincolnshire Mini Police ‘National Priorities’ which means over the course of two years, all of our Mini Police schools will learn about to protect members of their families and communities from being caught out by a scam which could potentially mean they could lose their life savings and put them into financial difficulty. Pupil Voice is strong in the Mini Police program so helping them to recognise the scams is a brilliant tool for them to talk about and share their learning to help others. We could all potentially fall victim to one kind of scam or another, they happen so quick we ask children to; Take Five – • Never tell people your personal details. • Don’t assume everyone is genuine especially when contacting through those 4 methods Online, Postal, Doorstep and Telephone. • Don’t be rushed into anything, take five minutes, speak to a true friend about whether it could be genuine. • Listen to your instincts and • Stay in control. The package we teach has been written in Lincolnshire by our own PC Mel Standbrook in conjunction with Stuart Tweedale – Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner and children from two different primary schools in Lincolnshire; Spilsby Primary Academy and Cranwell Primary. The program is now available for all
schools nationally as the official “Friends Against Scams - Trading Standards” product who partner with Lincolnshire Police to stop this fight against scams. We teach our Mini Police classes in Year 5 & Year 6 to recognise four types of scams – Phone, Online, Doorstep and Postal scams the Mini Police then make a promise to spread the message into their communities. Your average primary school pupil won’t be a victim to any of these mainly due to what they can access because
of their age but with teenagers being caught out more and more often as money mules it is important that we give them tips to protect themselves and others from becoming a target for example; parents, grandparents, neighbour’s and friends. We challenge our Mini Police to learn to recognise obvious signs of scams – from excessive junkmail to automated phonecalls, phishing emails and fake offers. We then challenge
them to go out into their local community – from local shops to coffee mornings and members’ clubs around their area – to share the knowledge and make as many people aware of scams as possible. Whilst we can’t always prevent scammers from sending emails and letters, or making calls and knocking on doors, we hope that we can share a little knowledge and make people a little wiser to the notion that offers can be simply be ‘too good to be true’

Boston High School The Roadhog bus, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary, came in to school at the beginning of the year and Year 7 students were invited aboard for transition sessions from Year 6 to the new secondary school and given information how to cope. They discussed issues they had with transition such as a larger school to navigate and meeting so many new people, and it helped them to know that others were having the same issues. They also talked about actions and consequences. They were given a timetable of where the bus is and when so that they can have a safe place to meet up with friends and meet new friends, and take a break from the school day. Mrs Biggar and Mrs Carter took Year 13 History students for a day of workshops at the National Holocaust Centre in Newark. They day began
with a tour around an exhibition all about how Germany descended into the Holocaust. This was interesting and interactive with lots of the students commenting on how useful it was. Students then took part in a workshop looking at the inevitability of the Holocaust which was directly relevant to their A Level course. They analysed historians’ interpretations and came to judgements based on the information given. The afternoon gave the students the privilege to hear a survivor testimony from Eva Clarke, who was born in a death camp. Eva gave an incredibly in-depth account of the struggles her mother faced during the Holocaust. Students were then able to ask questions and get an insight into this experience. The day proved to be informative as well as interesting and the students and members of staff learnt a lot.
Boston College To launch the careers of the designers, logical thinkers and problem solvers of the future, outstanding learning environments are needed. A new one will open its doors this month. It’s called EMAT, it’s in Boston, and it’s going to change the game for learning and development in the region. EMAT stands for Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology. You might think that means a workshop full of greasy machinery, but that’s about as far from the picture of engineering and manufacturing today as Henry Ford is from Elon Musk. Industry and technology have moved on at an incredible pace in recent times and now offer far reaching opportunities to build a successful career in almost every field, from aerospace to agriculture and artificial organs to artificial intelligence. Marie Roffey worked as an engineer in the Royal Navy for 20 years before becoming a lecturer at Boston College and is an enthusiastic promoter of the changing face of the subject she loves, she said, “Think how different a new car is from one made even five years ago. The engine doesn’t need oil - it’s a box of chemicals excited by electricity. In place of a controlled explosion
10 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
several thousand times a minute, you’ve got a source of power that is silent, instant and clean.” Engineering the Future The range of engineering careers is so much wider now than in the past as industry responds to the growth of digital technology. Today, the machines engineers design and work on are likely to be computers, robotic arms, or automated devices that think for themselves. Automation and machine learning are at the centre of what is being called the fourth industrial revolution, or Industry 4.0. It is changing design, construction, manufacturing and the skills we need to succeed in a global market. In the industrial office of today, instead of sitting at a drawing board, you’re creating designs in CAD on a screen, sending them to an automated milling machine, or a digital 3-D printer, which was itself made on a robot production line. The new specialist EMAT building will provide an industry-driven training facility that will stimulate growth and productivity across the sector. The centre will
act as a hub for local engineering, manufacturing and agri-tech businesses to create a partnership with the College to help train the engineers of the future. What is in EMAT? EMAT includes an innovative hub, two workshops that will provide space for traditional engineering and manufacturing skills and modern industry practices, an electronics laboratory, Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD/ CAM) suite, three classrooms, and a break-out space. Opportunities for Employers EMAT has been designed as a centre of innovation, producing highly skilled professionals, benefiting local businesses and the wider economy. The centre will work as a hub for schools and employers, providing resources which will stimulate and support innovation. The College curriculum will be employer-driven, providing the necessary skills for ‘Industry 4.0’ and meeting business needs.

Family Life
Looking After the Elderly this Winter It’s a sad fact, but every year about 20,000 more people aged over 65 die in the winter months than at other times of the year. Elderly people are more vulnerable to illness during the winter. This is because the cold weather suppresses the immune system and increases the risk of contracting flu and serious colds, and can also contribute to cases of hypothermia, breathing problems and cardiovascular conditions such as heart attacks. Keep an eye out for illness By increasing your visits you’ll be able to spot any signs of illness, and help get medical care quickly. All people aged over 65 are eligible for a free flu jab under the NHS. The vaccine greatly reduces the chances of contracting the virus and developing further complications such as bronchitis and pneumonia. When you visit look out for any signs of illness. Do they seem drowsy? Is their home cold, but they don’t seem to be aware? Have they got a hacking cough? These are all signs that they have some kind of health problem that can be especially risky in winter. Keep them warm An important point surrounding care of the elderly is to make sure their home is warm. Older people take longer to get warm than younger people, and lose heat more quickly. As they are also often less active than younger people it is easy for them to get cold fast without realising it. The home should be kept to at least 18 degrees Celsius, and they should wear enough clothing to be warm. A hot water bottle (especially for those who are less mobile) is a good way to keep warm both in bed and when sitting in the living room. If you find an older person is very cold then: • Get them into warm, dry clothes and wrap them in warm blankets. A lot of heat is lost through the head so a woolly hat will help. • Give them a warm drink, like tea, coffee or hot chocolate. • Turn up the heating in their house to raise the ambient temperature. Don’t rub their body or use heat pads and similar items, because this opens up the blood vessels near the surface of the skin quickly and they can lose more heat in this
way. As they become colder they become more likely to suffer severe hypothermia and it can also lead to heart attacks and other complications. Offer a helping hand Quite often, older people will struggle along, even when things are getting too much, and be reluctant to ask for help. This can lead to them restricting their lifestyle as they worry about being unable to cope, and they can end up isolated and depressed. If you know an elderly person who lives alone or has poor health, then ask if you can do something for them this winter. Sometimes something as simple as picking up prescriptions, helping with shopping or putting out the rubbish is enough. Not only will you be doing something practical to improve their life, but they’ll know that
somebody is looking out for them, which can boost their confidence. Just be there Research by Age UK revealed that every month more than one million elderly people don’t get to speak to family, a friend or a neighbour. Quite often, care for the elderly doesn’t involve much at all. Older people don’t always need help, but most people like someone to talk to. So make sure you take the time to call them, or drop in for a cup of tea and a chat. The important thing is just to be there and to listen. Winter can be a depressing time for lots of people, but older people often suffer the most during this season. Everyone can help with the care of the elderly and it doesn’t take much to have a big impact. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 13

On the first Thursday, the Christmas lights are switched on, preparing the town for the festivities which follow. This is a long running Skegness tradition which attracts many locals and visitors to the town centre. Santa Fun Run The Santa Fun Run on December 8th see’s runners dressed in Santa suits and running to help raise Money for local Charities. Each runner is sponsored and your Santa Suit is included with entry! The Santa fun run is organised each year by the Rotary Club of Skegness and is great fun for any one to join. Skegness Silver Band Also throughout the Christmas period, you will be able to find the local Skegness Silver Band playing classic christmas carols throughout the town, raising money for charity whilst filling the streets with beautiful festive music. You will also be able to hear the band play at the annual Rotary Carol Concert at the Embassy Theatre. Christmas Panto Why not enjoy the famous Skegness pantomime. Previous years have seen Snow White and the Seven Dwarves and Cinderella take the stage for the traditional Christmas panto. Previous years have seen stars such as actor Frazer Hines, Lee Otway, Kerry Moore and many more. It also features dancers from Skegness’ own Janice Sutton theatre school and Julie Stevens School of Dance. Beauty and The Beast This year you may just find yourself bumping into the beautiful Belle or running into the Beast! See Skegness’s Hildreds Centre transform into Beasts enchanarted Castle and after the Christmas lights go on Belle, the Beast, Lumiere and the talented dancers from Skegness’ own Janice Sutton theatre school and Julie Stevens School of Dance will be performing.

The Moss Man
The Moss Man has been operating in the Skegness and Louth areas for over three years now and has built up a large customer base. With our newest operator, Adam, we now cover Boston, Woodhall Spa and Spilsby areas. We are based in Sloothby near Skegness, Lincolnshire. Through being in the building trade for many years we realised that keeping block paving weed and moss free is a real problem. For years pressure washing has been the only real option, although a wire brush with a long handle is also useful if you have the time. Neither of these options kill the weeds or moss however, they simply remove the top greenery. In the case of the weeds it leaves the roots intact ready for regrowth and in the case of the moss any spores left behind have a nice damp environment to thrive. Pressure washing can also remove the sand which the blocks are laid on making your blocks drop and causing untold damage to your driveway which, in turn, could lead to having it re-laid. We kill the weeds and treat the moss and
algae. We make sure the weeds have been killed at the root before brushing all the debris from between the block work. After all debris is removed we treat the surface to remove any algae left on the blocks. This will keep the surface of your blocks clean. We then re-treat the block paving every three months to help control the regrowth. As I’m sure you’re aware unless the blocks are maintained the weeds and moss will keep returning. We clean your drive from only £99.00. then going forward we maintain it from only £29.99 every three months. It’s cheaper than getting your windows cleaned. We are now also treating roofs without standing on them or upsetting your neighbours. If you’ve got a new roof or driveway or have recently had them cleaned, don’t let them get back to their old state
again. Let us maintain that fresh look so you don’t have to worry. We are fully qualified and insured for your piece of mind. If your roof or drive is green and you want it clean call the Moss Man for an eco-friendly gleam! Call 01754 761606 for a quote today or email adam@themossman.co.uk

Health & Beauty
Complementary Therapies:
Your Health and Well Being Depending on your individual requirements, there are many complementary therapies that can help improve your general wellbeing. Complementary therapies are named as such because they complement conventional medicine and work hand in hand with an individual’s health. Hypnotherapy – a pure state of relaxation Sue Wickham of Soul 2 Soul gives us the facts about hypnosis: ‘We all experience the hypnotic state throughout our daily lives, just before going into a deep sleep. There has been a lot of misconception put onto hypnosis due to the media and television. Hypnosis is not a state of sleep; you do not have the power over a person to take control of their thoughts. It is a joint decision where a person feels relaxed and comfortable to move into deeper relaxation. The hypnotic state is very similar to a deep meditation. You are aware of all noises around you and are fully aware of your surroundings. My clients always report how pleasurable and relaxing their experience of hypnosis has been. ‘Hypnotherapy is a natural therapy – a pure state of deep relaxation to enable a therapist to bypass a person’s conscious mind to allow direct communication with the subconscious mind. It can be of benefit to many types of problems of a physical or psychological nature including: fears, phobias, smoking, weight, confidence, stress, sleep problems and anxiety – to name but a few.’ For more information visit the National Council for Hypnotherapy: www.hypnotherapists.org.uk. Acupuncture This type of therapy involves a therapist inserting fine needles into specific areas of the body to help with a range of ailments – from back pain and migraines, to arthritis and dental pain. Acupuncture is based
18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
on ancient principles which go back nearly two thousand years! This form of therapy works by helping the body’s ‘motivating energy’ or ‘life energy’, known as qi, to move smoothly through the body’s pathways. The needles go into these channels and help the body to restore its balance. Acupuncturists believe that when the flow of qi is obstructed, ill health can occur. As a result, acupuncture aims to help make the flow of energy smooth again, thus helping the body to heal. The therapist may manipulate the needles from time to time to help to regulate the flow of the qi. For more information, please contact the British Acupuncture Council at www.acupuncture.org.uk. Reiki Developed in Japan, Reiki is used as a form of natural healing – used to release physical and mental blockages. It works by the therapist putting their hands in different positions either on or above the body over the 7 ‘chakra’ points. It is believed that healing energy then flows from the therapist to the patient – Reiki flows through the areas where negative energy is present, replacing it with positive energy, and thus in turn allowing the ‘life energy’ to flow again. Reiki practitioners believe that it can help anyone suffering from physical pain, but it also said to help with a wide range of physical and emotional conditions – from mild anxiety and stress, to headaches and sleeplessness. Visit www.reikiassociation.org.uk
for more information. Nutritional Therapy This is not just about healthy eating – as Jo van Bragt who holds a CIBTAC qualification in Diet & Nutrition states. Jo, based at Mishishi in Spalding explains: ‘It’s a form of complementary therapy that can help improve your health. A therapist will work with you to produce a tailored nutritional course according to your individual needs.’ Jo states that health and nutrition therapy can have a range of benefits: ‘It can improve overall health, help reduce symptoms of common ailments such as IBS, Arthritis, Psoriasis and ADHD, and can help promote everyday weight control. It can also be used to help reduce stress and improve natural energy. Health and nutrition consultation can benefit young and old, male and female.’ For more information visit the Nutritional Therapy Council at www.nutritionaltherapycouncil.org. uk.
Our team favourites Indian Head Massage This has relaxing massage has been practiced for over a thousand years and includes the treatment of the shoulders, upper arms, neck, scalp and face. It is said to relieve tension, fatigue, headaches and eyestrain by manipulating energy channels. Aromatherapy This alternative therapy combines the use of essential oils, naturally produced by plans and trees. Sometimes it’s combined with massage. Aromatherapy is believed to help improve physical and emotional wellbeing. Reflexology This intensive massage works on the idea that different points on the feet, lower leg, hands, face or ears correspond with different areas of the body. It has been practiced for some 5000 years by the Egyptians and Chinese and is said to be a means of unblocking energy and promoting healing. Great for some serious relaxation!

Maximise Your Career at th e Office Christmas Party
It may have seemed ages away but here we are about to embark on the season of Christmas Parties and soon there will be talk of this year’s drunk colleagues, ‘secret Santas’ and who was the office bore. Is it any wonder that so many people start looking for a job in the New Year? Does the line ‘What I don't like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day’ sound familiar to you? Well take action and think! The annual office party can boost your career but, it can also break it. Do attend. Your office party is not an optional event. Even if you despise the thought of spending a whole evening with the people you work with every day, it’s a good idea to make an appearance, it shows that you are part of the team. Don’t dress inappropriately The venue will determine the dress code so make sure you know what it is. Women are advised to stay away from slinky dresses, low-plunging necklines, short-short skirts or tight-fitting trousers and, men should refrain from unbuttoning more than two buttons on their shirts and wearing overly fitted shirts that show off their muscles. Do some networking This is a good time to talk to people you wouldn’t normally come across and the boss. This could help you in the long term in terms of forging alliances, helping to get things done or just raising your profile. Don’t talk shop. Do you want to be seen as
the office bore? The office party gives you the chance to get to know people as people not just ‘Sarah from HR’. Do drink in moderation. Excessive drinking is the number one cause of office party ‘incidents’. Remember, it is a marathon not a sprint and it is likely that you will have a long evening ahead of you. But, by the time you realise this you may have already consumed enough alcohol to sink a battleship and not quite be with it. Stick to your limit, drink slowly or alternate between alcohol and water and, if it’s too late for that, then switch to soft drinks and mince pies. And resist the temptation to indulge in tequila shots or flaming sambucca or you may end up losing more than your inhibitions! Don’t make a move on a colleague. After a few hours and a few beers even the ones you’ve never noted before can look like a goddess. Did you know that recent research shows that 41% of workers admit to having
a sexual liaison with a co-worker at an office party. Before you make a bee-line for the person you’ve had your eye on all year, do yourself a favour, stay put and think, ‘Is this a good idea?’ ‘Probably not’, is the likely answer. Do watch your language. Remember the reason why you are at the Christmas party in the first place is because you have a job. Avoid saying things you wouldn’t say on a normal office day. At a former job a colleague of mine told our CEO exactly what he thought of his speech and it wasn’t how wonderful it was! Consequently, the Christmas card from the boss contained his P-45. And, for ****’s sake, don’t swear! Above all, enjoy the party. Strive to be remembered for the right reasons and not for your lustful antics or David Brent dancing. In the words of the great man himself from “The Office”, when asked how he would like to be remembered, he replied: “Simply, as, the man who put a smile on the face of all who he met.” www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 23

Toyota Corolla Touring Sports What’s a ‘Touring Sports’? In this case, it’s not a high-speed gentleman’s car, that’s for sure. It’s just a posh term for an ‘estate’. And not the net worth of an individual kind, either. Simply put, the Corolla Touring Sports is like the Corolla hatchback, but with a larger load area grafted on. And that’s what makes it a top family wagon. The new Corolla – in whichever shape you go for, is a handsome, chiselled vehicle. Inside and out, the Japanese motor is every bit a model you’d be happy
Toyota. You do with the likes of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes, but this marque seems to make you acceptable on the road – and in the school
Luggage-wise, you’ll get a lot into this estate car. It’s by no means the biggest of its type, but the 2.0-litre hybrid, on test here, boasts 581-litres of load space. Of course, if you fold the rear seats, and kick the kids out, the Corolla turns into the perfect tip-run workhorse. to take the kids to school in. You might even make some other parents green with envy. You don’t get that badge snobbery thing with
playground. You get nods of approval, rather than scowls. You’re let out at junctions instead of being ignored. And you never get the finger from other
drivers in heated traffic situations. The Corolla Touring Sports makes motoring in Britain almost pleasant again. Inside, there’s room for four people – or five, if you really want to sit someone in the middle of the rear bench. My eldest daughter was sandwiched between two child seats on the way to Alton Towers. The trip was just under two hours – and she only started complaining an hour into the trip. The thought of the entertainment at the end of the journey was the one thing to keep her from losing the plot with her siblings. So, think of this as a fourseater car – and only a five-up machine if you have a small human being willing to take the short straw. Luggage-wise, you’ll get a lot into this estate car. It’s by no means the biggest of its type, but the 2.0-litre hybrid, on test here, boasts 581-litres of

FACTS load space. Of course, if you fold the rear seats, and kick the kids out, the Corolla turns into the perfect tip-run workhorse. The Touring Sports is not just a practical set of wheels, though. The £30,345 flagship ‘Excel’ version lent to me will hit 62mph from a standing start in 8.1 seconds. That’s reasonably swift. And because a petrol and electric mix propel it, the car is frugal, managing between 50-60mpg. Co2 emissions are low at 89g/km – making this a cheap vehicle to tax. It’s perfect company car material, too. A top car in many ways then – apart from one thing – the price. You may have noticed I slipped that £30k figure into the last paragraph. It’s a lot of money. Mind you, this is the top Excel trim – and the most basic Touring Sports is £22,575. That only has a 1.2-litre unit, though – with 0-62mph taking 10.8 seconds and mpg around 58. Still, its cargo capacity is larger than the 2.0-litre version at 596-litres. And if you have an aversion to Toyota, then the similar priced Ford Focus estate might work for you – but the load area is a bit smaller. The choice is yours, folks.
