Welcome

to the December issue December is a really exciting month, I love this time of year, it’s all about anticipation – will it snow on Christmas Day? Will I get all my shopping done in time? Should I get a real or artificial tree? I personally had a very sad Christmas last year so intend to make the most of this year and enjoy it to the full. All that remains for me to do, is to wish you all a very Merry Christmas from myself and the team here at Simply Boston.

Hayley x Hello!

Well what a year it has been! Whilst the run up to Christmas can be fun (but hectic) there is hopefully time towards the end of the month when you will get the chance to sit back, relax and reflect on the past 12 months, as well as looking forward to the year ahead. To help round off 2014 we present all things Christmas, from decorating the tree to choosing meat for Christmas dinner and even help with a few gift ideas. All that remains is for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you in 2015. Enjoy the issue..

Why Not Open Your Garden to the Public to Help St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice? The nights are getting darker, the days are getting colder, it may only be November, but St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice is already thinking ahead to summer 2015. Hospice fundraisers are appealing for people who would like to share their gardens with others to sign up to hold an open garden day next summer and help to raise money for children and young adults with life limiting illnesses. It doesn’t matter whether the garden is large or small, quaint and cottagey or a perfectly landscaped plot. Even if you consider that your garden is nothing special, but you are willing to open it up to hold a garden party or serve afternoon tea on a sunny Sunday afternoon, then you are welcome to take part. Hospice Events Co-ordinator, Angela Greenfield, says: “We held our first open garden day back in 2011, to mark National Children’s Hospice Week. This was a great success, but if we learned anything from that, it is that different gardens are at their best at different times of year; so, for the last 3 years, we have left it to the garden owners to set their own date. This has worked well and our wonderful garden owners have, between them, raised over £25,000.00 for the Hospice.” “Many of those who open their gardens are keen gardeners, who are very knowledgeable about plants and garden design. Others, though, just have ordinary, but pleasant gardens, and have used them to host outdoor afternoon teas, strawberry afternoons/ evenings and even full blown garden parties. So, it doesn’t matter if you don’t have a show garden, you can still take part.” Every garden that opens, helps to raise vital funds for the Hospice, but equally important, every garden that opens helps to spread the name of the Hospice in its own area and to raise awareness of our work.” St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice provides care for children and young adults up to the age of 25 years who have a life limiting illness; as importantly, the Hospice also provides care and support for the child’s family. It is the only local children’s hospice and provides services to families from across the whole of Lincolnshire and East Yorkshire. All care is completely free of charge to the families who

need it but keeping the Hospice open, currently costs around £1.8 million per year, with only 3% coming from statutory funding. Anyone who chooses to open their garden will receive support from the Hospice. The Hospice’s marketing team will produce publicity posters and submit details of your event to the local press, various online events guides and to local radio stations; they will also include details on their own website and social media sites. Details of your open garden day will also be included in the Hospice’s Open Gardens Booklet, which is distributed across the whole of the Hospice’s catchment area; and in return for your support, will include any NGS open garden dates that you may have. Anyone who is able to confirm their date before the end of 2014, can also have their event included in the Hospice’s 2015 Events Brochure. If you do not normally open your garden and are not covered by public liability insurance, then you can be covered under the Hospice’s public liability insurance, subject to a risk assessment being carried out by a Hospice representative. If you would like more information or if you would like to sign up to open your garden, then please call Angela Greenfield at the Hospice on 01472 350908 ext 265 or e mail angela.greenfield@nhs. net. Those wishing to have their open garden included in the 2015 Event’s Brochure must register by 31st December 2014. The closing date for inclusion in the Open Gardens Booklet is 28th February 2015.

Algarkirk’s Church wins Heritage Lottery Fund support The beautiful but endangered church of St Peter and St Paul in Algarkirk (Boston, Lincolnshire) has received a lifeline in the form of initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) it was announced today. The £175,000 development grant is the first step in a £1.8m project designed to repair this important building; conserve and interpret its scheme of Victorian stained glass and interior decoration, which is a prime example of Gothic revival in the country; and re-establish the church as a resource for the community, which will include improving the facilities at the church. This project has been driven by a group of volunteers from the village who formed the Algarkirk Major Project Group (AMPG). They have been supported by the parish priest, Fr Gary Morgan; the Church Buildings Department of the Diocese of Lincoln; as well as the village community. “The initial funds will enable the group to consult with technical building and architectural professionals and to employ a Project Officer who will focus on making sure that students, experts and, above all, the local community can be involved in returning St Peter and St Paul to its former glory. Plans for the next two years, before we submit our application for full project funding, include taster workshops in stained glass conservation, stone masonry and other traditional crafts.” said AMPG Heritage Secretary and founding member, Diana Reid. “The AMPG will also be hosting activities

for the community so that information about the project can be shared. Look out for coffee mornings and a book swap, which will now take place on every second Saturday of the month, and on the 24th October, the project group hosted a Ladies Pamper evening at the village hall,” explained Jayne Maskell, also a founder member of the AMPG. The Diocese of Lincoln Church Buildings Department said, “this is a Grade I listed building of national significance. It is a large Fenland church, the earliest parts of which date from the late 12th century, with phases of development following in 13th, 14th, and late 15th centuries. Between 1850 and 1854 the church was extensively restored by R. C. Carpenter, who collaborated with the famous Victorian designers J. G. Crace, Hardman & Co. and A.W.N. Pugin to produce a stunning scheme of decoration in the chancel. Later, a substantial scheme of stained glass windows by the important nineteenthcentury manufacturers Clayton and Bell was installed.” Father Gary Morgan commented that “The church used to be a focus for village life, and now it is hoped that, thanks to the vision and hard work of the Project Group, it can become so again, not just as a place of worship - which it will always be - but also as a centre of heritage, learning, and community enjoyment. Algarkirk has become a fragmented community geographically. We hope this development

They were really taken by innovation and creativity that went into Boston College Foundation learner’s project: Ingelow Centre Cookbook. The Boston College Foundation Catering students of 20132014, decided to create a cookbook featuring a combination of their favourite food and food that they would love to try. will help draw everyone together. For, without the support of our community, we cannot succeed,” “This initial grant is not the end of the story,” stressed AMPG Leader, Audrey Young. “This is only the first step in our aim to make St Peter and St Paul a community resource for the next hundred years. But it does mean, as they say, that we are now ‘In it to win it!’” Explaining the importance of the HLF support, Amanda Turner said, “The heritage centre provides a great insight into the varied heritage of the local area. Its fascinating collections will now be available for more people to learn about. The HLF is pleased to support this worthwhile project.” Vanessa Harbar. Head of HLF East Midlands said: “We’re pleased to provide initial support to restore this historically important church. The village community have worked hard to get to this point in their quest to secure the future of the building and open it up for wider community use. We now look forward to working with the group to help plans develop further.”

The book went on sale towards the end of the summer term and to date books have been sold to many local people, and as far afield as Norfolk, Essex and California! “This has been a fantastic project, the learners worked extremely hard, with such dedication and professionalism. I am tremendously proud of their achievements”, said Jo Snell, lecturer for this project. TaylorITEX Director Mick Taylor bought a copy of the book and was not only impressed by the enterprise initiative shown by the college and students towards the book he was also highly impressed with the quality of the recipes contained within. He states “The recipe I followed created a delicious meal and I want to provide the opportunity for others to either try them or to purchase a copy of the book.” Working in partnership with Boston College and the project team they are proud to announce that as from Monday Nov 10th The Black Sluice Riverside Café will be choosing a different meal from the cookbook each week to serve as their meal of the week. The book is on sale from The Black Sluice Café and Boston College priced at £6. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Don’t dump it, bin it A large proportion of rubbish which is illegally fly-tipped in Boston borough would have been taken away for free by your local friendly binmen. Bizarrely some residents go to a lot of trouble to bag up household waste, drive it out to some lonely spot out of town and dump it. But Boston Borough Council will take this rubbish away from outside your property when they empty your bin and send it to the Energy From Waste plant, where it will be burned for electricity generation. That’s what happens to all former landfill waste (all that goes into your green wheelie bin). If your wheelie bin is full the council will take away what it terms “side waste”. That’s a reasonable amount of excess rubbish that is neither recyclable nor garden waste which you cannot fit into you green bin because it is full. Bag this up – black sack is best, but any plastic bag will be OK – and leave it at the side of your green bin on your collection day. The council is happy to take small amounts, especially where perhaps residents may have had a party and need to get rid of extra waste as a one-off. If you routinely have excess green bin waste contact the council on 01205 311 1112 where a member of staff will be happy to advise on waste management and perhaps offer an additional bin as a solution. Cllr Michael Brookes, Boston Borough

Council’s portfolio holder for waste services, said: “It seems absurd that some people go to the extra trouble of fly-tipping this kind of waste when we will take it away from their doorstep. “We’d much rather than do that, even if it is properly bagged excess side waste, than trawl about the countryside clearing up flytipping sites. This is extra cost to the council tax payer and we will take enforcement action against residents who fly tip.” George Bernard, the council’s environmental services manager, said: “At the same time we’d encourage all residents to do the right thing for themselves, us, their pocket and the environment and recycle as much as they can into their blue bin. The household waste recycling site – the ‘tip’, on Slippery Gowt Lane in Wyberton, at the end of Marsh Lane - will take a vast array of household waste and will recycle as much of this as possible, and borough council staff will be happy to quote for removal of large volumes of domestic waste (and bulky items) at a reasonable cost, but please ensure that if you use someone else to dispose of your waste they are licenced, otherwise you could be liable should it be disposed of improperly.” In 2012/13 there was a total of 1,405 fly-tipping incidents in the borough. This fell to 939 in 2013/14. In the first six months of 2014/15 there had been 500. Analysis shows

that by far the biggest portion of fly-tipped rubbish is ordinary household waste. Construction and garden waste, tyres, white goods and other waste make up the rest. Boston Borough Council is the founding partner in a radical approach to tackling fly-tipping which involves using final-stage prisoners from HM Prison North Sea Camp to collect fly-tipped waste throughout Boston borough and parts of South Holland. George said: “The amounts of waste now being recycled or turned into useful compost in Boston borough is a success story. For the first time, this summer, more than half of all waste presented has been recycled or composted. All household waste now has an element of secondary use – be it creating electricity, being recycled into new product or simply creating useful compost. The borough has built up a deserved reputation for presenting high-quality recyclable waste with low levels of contamination by unsuitable waste, but we need to strive to minimise these contaminants to ensure that this continues.” The maximum sentence for someone convicted of fly tipping is a £50,000 fine and a year in prison.

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston Do you remember when councils such as Boston’s first began introducing CCTV? Those who were against, or thought there was something to fear from it, soon had it labelled Big Brother. We saw the force for good it would be and stuck to our guns, often in the face of quite vociferous opposition. It’s pleasing to note, all these years later, a complete reversal of that situation. Now people are up in arms if there are proposals to remove CCTV cameras. Their worth has been proven in terms of providing security and protection for all those who are law abiding, and their ability to assist the police and others when people are less than law abiding. Boston’s CCTV success story goes on and on. In the past few weeks it has been praised for playing its part in tracking a getaway car used by an armed robber who was then arrested by police. He has been locked out of harm’s way for 28 years. It is also again being used in the continuing war against litter, and worse. The latest public display of unidentified name and shame suspects aimed to track down people responsible for urinating in public in the town. Such is the impact of CCTV in cases such as this that some of those we wanted to speak to in connection with these offences handed themselves in at the police station the very morning their faces appeared on public view. In other instances the public has been able to provide confidential information enabling us to confront those who wilfully litter and show no respect for the environment we all share. The name and shame campaign, now being used for the fourth time is also responsible for heightened awareness leading to an effective deterrent. I make no apologies for using CCTV in this way. Those who have done nothing wrong have nothing to fear. Those who have should be aware that we have 68 cameras covering vast areas of town and they are monitored the clock round, every day of the

year, including Christmas and other bank holidays. We have continuously invested and updated and our cameras state of the art. They record everything they see, they see in the dark, they zoom in, they track. Our operators are trained and qualified experts. Such is the standing of our CCTV system that we are taking over control of cameras for neighbouring South Holland District Council and negotiating to do the same for East Lindsey District Council. This will generate revenue streams for Boston Borough Council and help the other two authorities make savings. This is only part of the way in which we use CCTV – it continues to be of assistance to police and other emergency services. It provides an assurance to residents that they can move about the town in safety and with confidence. Anyone travelling the A16 toward the A17 junction at Sutterton roundabout may have been intrigued by a large metal structure on the skyline at Algarkirk. Taking shape, and due to be finished in months, is a new Mercedes truck and van dealership. The borough council was instrumental in assisting with this development. It will create 25 to 30 jobs and is good news for this area and the borough. I am also pleased to report that the council’s new depot in St John’s Road is running well and paying dividends in terms of efficiencies and savings. All good news for the council tax payers of the borough. Finally, although Christmas seems a long way off as I write this, can I take this opportunity to wish all a very merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year. Peter

New Powers to tackle anti-social behaviour

Lincolnshire Police, Boston Borough Council and their partners have new powers to deal with anti-social behavior (ASB) in the borough when new legislation came into force on 20th October

T

he Anti-Social Behavior, Crime and Policing Act 2014, is reducing the number of ASB orders after complaints that the previous laws made the process for dealing with ASB too slow and

bureaucratic. The Act includes new powers for ordinary citizens to trigger investigations into ASB. Known as community trigger, it will give victims the right to bring the council, police and their partners together to review their case and find a solution. The Act also gives victims a say, through consultation with the Police and Crime Commissioner, in how lowlevel crime and ASB offenders should be punished out of court – known as community remedy.

“What I like about this new legislation is that it is not too bureaucratic and gives simple solutions to very difficult problems and should make a real difference to the lives of people who are affected by ASB.”

Other measures include: • Criminal behavior orders – banning individuals PCSO Alan Horry 07939 885499

from certain activities or places and making them seek treatment for their behaviour. Issued by the courts after conviction, a breach would carry a maximum five-year prison term. • Civil injunctions – to nip bad behaviour in the bud. Issued by the county or youth courts, these civil orders will be easier to obtain. Breaches could result in imprisonment or fines for adults, and curfews, supervision or detention for under-18s. There will be a delay to the introduction of this part of the Act to allow unavoidable and necessary changes to be made to the civil legal aid system to ensure that applications for advocacy assistance can be assessed for those involved in civil injunction hearings. It should be completed by the end of January 2015 at the latest. • Community protection notices – one order for local authorities to stop persistent environmental ASB like graffiti, neighbour noise or dog fouling. Police, social landlords and local authorities will also be able to use

PCSO Marie Williams 07799 581739

the notices for more serious disorder and criminality in specific places, such as closing a property used for drug dealing. • Police dispersal power – a police power to direct any individual causing or likely to cause ASB, crime and disorder away from a particular place for up to 48 hours and to confiscate related items. • Public spaces protection orders (PSPOs) – to deal with a particular nuisance or problem in a particular area considered detrimental to the local community’s quality of life. • Closure powers – the power to close problem premises for up to six months. • Absolute grounds for possession – to speed up the repossession of council homes in the most serious cases if ASB or criminality has already been proven in court. We have already used the dispersal power on two separate occasions at the Dame Sarah Swift Park at Kirton after a rise in ASB and one worrying case of Arson and Boston is currently applying for a Public Spaces Protection Order for the town centre to further restrict the drinking of alcohol in the street. What I like about this new legislation is that it is not too bureaucratic and gives simple solutions to very difficult problems and should make a real difference to the lives of people who are affected by ASB.

Advice

Avoid a Christmas debt hangover Planning, budgeting and organisation are key to avoid getting into debt at Christmas and beyond. If your spending runs out of control, you can soon find that debt is not only a problem at Christmas, but can become a way of life ❱ BY STUART HELLON

Follow our ten top tips to prevent your festive finances getting out of control.

Do your own credit checks. If you are going to use a credit card, shop around and compare terms. Some cards charge high interest rates, but provide interest free periods or discounts. Budget for all these costs and put the payment dates in your diary.

8

Be realistic and budget accordingly. Work out how much you are going to spend on each person – and stick to it. Manage expectations as to what you or Santa can give.

1

Don’t forget everyday bills – the consequences can be severe if you forget about the mortgage, utilities and other existing debts. Even though it’s Christmas, get your priorities right.

2

If you do need more money, don’t just run up an overdraft without talking to your bank first. It will work out much more expensive.

3

Keep things simple –if you can’t afford to pay for your goods outright by cash, cheque or debit card, don’t take out extended credit agreements unless they really do work out cheaper.

4

Be organised. There’s a lot to remember at Christmas. If you’ve borrowed money don’t forget that it won’t be long before you have to make a payment. Make sure you pay on time, even if it is only the minimum, or you will be faced with additional charges.

savings and convenience may prove to be a false economy. Read the small print. Check for hidden extras in any credit agreement. Work out the total amount payable. Ensure that the monthly instalments are within your budget before signing. Interest free credit can seem attractive, but if you don’t pay on time, or miss a payment, you could have to pay a lot more.

LIBRARY NEWS

Events at Boston Library during December

Adult choice Longbourn by Jo Baker This is a real thrill of a book for Jane Austen fans and even for those who tried Austen and found it a little snobby. A clever book that interweaves the familiar story of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice with the lives, loves and loss faced by the domestic servants working at Longbourn. Jo Baker’s inspiring work brings to the fore the characters of an Austen novel that usually just appear fleetingly to deliver a note or drive a carriage and gives insight into the realities of the working conditions of service in a grand house.

Junior choice The tooth Fairy’s Christmas by Peter Bently and Garry Parsons

A very sweet book featuring a little tooth fairy that is on a mission to collect a tooth and give a coin, but she’s lost, outside in the cold snowy night on Christmas Eve. Who will rescue her in time for Christmas morning?

Decorate your tree

Decorating your Christmas tree One of the most fun parts of the run up to Christmas, choosing and decorating the Christmas tree can be a real family affair

W

hether you have a real or an artificial tree, the right decorations can give stunning results and placed in your window can give your house a festive feel both inside and out. Modern Christmas trees began in early modern Germany and became popular across Europe in the 19th Century. Originally decorated with apples, nuts and candles today people use a wide variety of ornaments, tinsel and electric lights to decorate their trees along with a large ornament at the top of the tree such as a star or an angel. So how do you get your tree looking its best? If you have an artificial tree then make sure when you put it up that the branches are evenly spaced and fully outstretched. This will pay dividends when you come to add your decorations. If you are buying a real tree then make sure you are able to see it before it is put into its net so you can check that it is a good shape. You should also look at the needles on the tree as if loads fall off when it is moved, particularly from the outer branches, then you may want to look for a different tree.

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN Once you’ve got your tree home and decided where to place it the next step is to decorate it. Begin with your lights. Christmas lights come in many forms, with classic white, multi-coloured and flashing varieties all popular. When putting your lights on the tree start at the top and work your way down, making sure that the cabling is hidden within the branches of the tree. Once they are spaced out switch them on to make sure they are evenly spaced. Once your lights are in place, if you haven’t decided on a theme for your tree then you can either go all out with everything you’ve got or you can pick a colour scheme or decide which of your decorations you would like to use. When considering colour schemes you have the choice of the traditional or the contemporary. Traditional colours such as red and gold give a classic look while newer colours such as blue and silver give a real wintery feel. Start with any tinsel or strings of beads and follow it with your baubles and other decorations. Unlike the lights, work from the bottom to the top of the tree. If your baubles and decorations are different sizes then put the largest at the bottom and the smallest at the top. Decorations like icicles also look striking at the bottom of the tree. When placing decorations at the bottom of the tree, consider them carefully if you have pets or small children! After the baubles and ornaments come any finishing touches such as ribbons and edibles such as candy canes or chocolate decorations (again with those pets and small children in mind!) before the tree topper to give it that final flourish. Then all that’s left is to sit back, relax and enjoy the finished result. It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas….

“...you can either go all out with everything you’ve got or you can pick a colour scheme or decide which of your decorations you would like to use.”

Care Homes

Choosing a Care Home There are many considerations when choosing a care home for a relative so it is a decision that cannot be rushed

“Things that are high on your list may not be on theirs so make sure that between you there is a list covering everything you both want – with your relative’s wishes coming first.”

W

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

hen you begin to search for a care home it is important to gather as much information as you can. Whilst your decision will be influenced by factors such as the area you live in, what vacancies there are and funding needs. if your relative has been assessed and it has been decided that a care home is the best course of action then the council will be able to give you a list of care homes in the area which meet your relative’s needs. Once you have your list you can begin to whittle down your options. The easiest way to shortlist is to look at the type of care your relative needs. Is it just residential care they need or do they require specialist care for a condition such as dementia? Not every care home has trained Nurses on their staff so if you do need them it will reduce your options. A visit to the Care Quality Commision’s website (www.cqc.org.uk) will provide you with information about care homes which include details of individual homes’ most recent inspections which will give you an idea of what these homes do well (and not so well!). It will also provide details of services available. Most importantly, ask your relative what the most important things are to them. Things that are high on your list may not be on theirs so make sure that between you there is a list covering everything you both want – with your relative’s wishes coming first. Once you have your shortlist it is time to contact

22 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

the homes for more information. Before you visit now is the time to make sure that there is availability, that they provide the correct services for your relative and also confirmation of costs. Everyone assessed as requiring a care home to meet their nursing needs is entitled to a contribution of £108.70 per week from the NHS, regardless of income or savings, paid directly to the home. The council may also be able to provide assistance but you will need to contact them for assessment. You may like to ask for a brochure or any promotional information they have and look at their websites. Now comes the visits. It is important that your relative visits with you for as good a feel as you can get for a place yourself, it is your relative who will have to live there and so their input is vital. When you visit remember to ask all the questions you may have and ask to see everywhere – from bedrooms to communal areas and outdoors. If possible, ask if your relative can sample the menu so they can get a feel for how the food will be. Also, speak to some of the residents – they know best what life is like there! Once you have found the right home for your relative then it is time to fill in the paperwork and get them moved. Remember to check the paperwork thoroughly and be aware of any extra fees such as broadband and telephone. When you are completely clear as to the terms and conditions only then is it time to sign on the dotted line. Following this you will need to work with the staff at the home to get your relative in and settled with as little upheaval as possible. This is something they do regularly so listen to their advice and be on hand if they have any initial questions for you.

Christmas Dinner

Christmas Dinner Whilst Turkey claims the crown for the meat most eaten for Christmas Dinner we take a look at some alternatives which would go down just as well at the table One of our favourite meals of the year, Christmas Dinner is a grand occasion to sit with your family and eat, drink and be merry. It’s also a good opportunity to show off your culinary skills! But rather than the usual turkey, what else could you cook to wow at the table this year?

Ingredients 

1kg beef fillet 3 tbsp olive oil 250g chestnut mushroom 50g butter 1 large sprig fresh thyme 100ml white wine 500g pack puff pastry 2 egg yolks beaten

Poached Salmon Ingredients 

1 whole salmon, remove the head and the tail 1 onion, chopped 2 bay leaves 4 tbsp white wine vinegar sea salt black pepper

Preparation method 1 Place the salmon in a large roasting tin. 2 Add enough cold water to cover the fish. Add the onion, bay leaves, vinegar and a good pinch of salt and a little black pepper. 3 Cover with tin foil, and bring to the boil on the stove. Once it is boiling, turn off the heat and allow the fish to stand in the water until cool. 4 Carefully remove the salmon and place onto a board. Scrape off the skin and place on a large flat serving dish. Serve with a bowl of hollandaise sauce.

Beef Wellington Preparation method 1 Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. Sit the 1kg beef fillet on a roasting tray, brush with 1 tbsp olive oil and season with pepper, then roast for 15-20 minutes. When the beef is cooked to your liking, remove from the oven to cool. 2 While the beef is cooling, finely chop 250g the mushrooms. 3 Heat the remaining olive oil and the butter in a large pan and fry the mushrooms on a medium heat, with the thyme, for about 10 mins stirring often, until you have a softened mixture. Season the mushroom mixture, pour over the wine and cook for about 10 mins until all the wine has been absorbed. The mixture should hold its shape when stirred. Remove the mushroom from the pan to cool and discard the thyme. 4 Spread half of the mushroom mixture over the beef fillet and then wrap in cling film into a sausage shape before chilling in the fridge. 5 Roll out a third of the puff pastry to a 18 x 30cm strip and place on a non-stick baking sheet. Roll out the remainder of the puff pastry to about 28 x 36cm. Unravel the fillet from the cling film and sit it in the centre of the smaller strip of pastry. Brush the egg yolks onto the pastry’s edges, and the top and sides of the wrapped fillet. Carefully lift and drape the larger piece of pastry over the fillet, pressing well into the sides. Seal the rim with the edge of a fork. Glaze all over with more egg yolk and, using the back of a knife, mark the beef Wellington with long diagonal lines taking care not to cut into the pastry. Chill for at least 30 mins. 6 Heat oven to 200C. Brush the Wellington with a little more egg yolk and cook until golden – roughly 20-25 mins for medium-rare beef, 30 mins for medium. Allow to stand for 10 mins before serving in thick slices.

Nut Roast Preparation method 1 Preheat oven to 180 degrees and line a 2 lb loaf tin with non-stick baking paper. 2 Gently fry the onion, mushrooms, celery, carrots and pepper in butter until softened. 3 Add the beaten eggs, chopped walnuts, pine nuts and breadcrumbs. Season with salt and pepper. 4 Scoop the mixture into the prepared tin, pressing down into he corners and smoothing out the top. Place in oven and roast for 1 hour, checking and covering the top after 30 minutes if it’s starting to brown too much. 5 Leave to set for about 10 minutes before after taking it out of the tin and slicing.

Ingredients 

2 tablespoons butter 1 large onion, finely chopped 100g mushrooms 2 sticks celery 2 large carrots 1 pepper 5 eggs, beaten 80g walnuts, roughly chopped 40g pine nuts 180g breadcrumbs Pinch sea salt and black pepper

Jayne Rush Hairdressing After many years of working with some of Lincolnshire’s leading hair establishments Jayne Rush set out to open her first salon in Boston in July 1986 “Over 13 years ago I decided that Kirton as an expanding village would present us with a fantastic opportunity to copy the success we had achieved in Boston.”

Jayne

ayne Rush is proud to have created a remarkable and highly respected reputation for Hairdressing, in both of her Salons, in Main Ridge Boston, and Station Road Kirton. Both maintain the simple strategy of `Quality Service, and Customer Satisfaction, provided by highly skilled staff, who really do care about their clients!` Jayne believes that her business relies upon the quality and skill of it`s staff `In my opinion, our success is totally reliant upon the dedication and skill of, what I honestly, believe is a fantastic team of highly skilled members of our Hairdressers and Beautician`. The branch in Kirton also has the added benefit of a Beauty section, which includes the high quality and renowned St. Tropez, upright, and very safe Spray Tanning facility, alongside a full range of high quality nail and beauty services. This section is overseen by our highly gifted Beauty Therapist. `Because our Kirton Salon, is so much larger than the Boston Salon,` said Jayne, `this gave us the opportunity to expand our services. We are so proud of the skill and dedication shown by our talented Beauty Therapist Amie Hayward`. Jayne Rush and her professional staff are, as a business, constantly seeking out and evaluating new and effective products. This is a clear advantage of building a trusting relationship with a Jayne Rush Stylist or Therapist, who are able to advise clients specifically on product use. Both salons stock high quality products and are regularly supplementing their growing range of hair and beauty products. `All of our staff are experts in their craft,` said Mrs Rush, ` so our clients are able to tap into a wide range of professional `practical knowledge`.

In April 2010 Jayne Rush Hair Salons set out to source some new, quality products. While doing so they became very excited by one very new, and relatively unheard of product. It was then that they became the very first Hairdressing salon in Boston, to stock this new product, which they believed was destined to take the Hairdressing Industry by storm. Now, four years on, their vision and confidence, was proved right! MOROCCANOIL, has a unique fluidity which allows stylists to design and create beautiful styling techniques which can greatly enhance the clients image. With its distinctive aroma, and highly attractive Aqua and Gold packaging, they believe that it will remain at the forefront of the market for years to come. Just as in the beginning, when they became the first stockist of MOROCCANOIL, they continue today to seek out, test and promote only the very best products in the

industry. They make no apologies for continuing to seek out and provide outstanding products to use on all of their clients. Great4Hair Extensions, NO,NO,NO, this is not a cry of rejection, but our way of letting clients know about the very best hair extension system ever, using real high quality hair that not only lasts and lasts, but may with care be removed and reapplied. Clients are simply going wild for these REAL, Great4Hair products. No Glue, No Heat, No damage, simply using the most exciting and authentic looking extensions you are ever likely to see. This long lasting yet simple process to completely alter simplest processes, but also the very best on the market at present, as there is NO heat NO glue NO damage to your hair and can last up to a year. This service is available at both salons. However a full consultation and quotation is required prior to this service. Gents! At the Kirton salon a full range of gents grooming services have been introduced, including a high quality wet shave. First time Clients might want to begin with a basic wet shave, or some might decide to spoil themselves a little, with a luxuriously indulgent wet shave, of course it may be that all that is required is simple and traditional haircut, or indeed a full styling, or restyling experience. The specialist in gents styling is Mr. Michael Robinson, however all our staff are fully qualified and available for appointments. At the Kirton salon, in addition to waxing, massage, manicure, pedicures, Gel nails etc., eye lash extensions are now available in both permanent, semi-permanent and temporary party lashes. Once again after an extensive search of the market place we have introduced the new and exciting range of Eve Taylor of London aromatherapy skin care range which we use when carrying out our facial treatments.

5* Hygiene Ratings

Thinking of eating out this Christmas? The Food Standards Agency urge you to ‘look before you book’ this Christmas

“Our Food, Health & Safety Team works hard by continually monitoring standards across the District and offering advice and guidance on good hygiene practices and I am pleased to say we generally have good levels of standards across the district.”

I

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

f you’re planning that special Christmas meal with work colleagues, friends or family we would like to remind you to ‘look before you book’. Christmas is a time to enjoy good company and good food without worrying about food poisoning. But the truth is, you can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean and tidy the staff look or by how busy it is. It’s the things you can’t see – like germs spread by bad hygiene practices. There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest – check the food hygiene rating. The food hygiene rating tells you about the hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses. It’s really easy to check. Just go online and check the Food Standards Agency website: www. food.gov.uk/ratings or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker; if you can’t see one, just ask.

“This Christmas, do this one little thing for peace of mind when eating out. Take a moment to check the food hygiene rating, pick the right place, and enjoy a great meal out.” The ratings are determined by local authority food safety officers and run from 0-5, with a 5 rating meaning a very good level of food hygiene. Around 95% of food businesses are rated 3 or better so there are plenty of places with good standards and you can easily avoid taking your family to those not meeting the grade. If you don’t see a green and black sticker in the window or you spot a low rating online, you can make a better informed choice. Catherine Brown, Chief Executive, Food Standards Agency, says: “This Christmas, do this one little thing for peace of mind when eating out. Take a moment to check the food hygiene rating, pick the right place, and enjoy a great meal out.” For more information, visit www. food.gov.uk/business-industry/ caterers/hygieneratings

If you are thinking about upholstery then your first call should be to Sugarhill

“No job too big or small.”

W NE

T

he last time Sugarhill featured in Simply Boston magazine was in back in June when they were helping Boston put itself back together following the floods. Since then the company continues to go from strength to strength with both their residential and commercial customers. Recently the company has become a stockist of Swaffer fabrics so if you are thinking of any work you might need doing then call in to the shop to take a look at these fantastic fabrics – there is a wide variety to choose from, including traditional and contemporary styles. Sugarhill also have an experienced seamstress who is able to make curtains and blinds to your specifications. Styles include pencil pleats, pinch pleats, eyelets, pelmets and roman blinds. If you are thinking about having some furniture reupholstered but not sure where to start then pick up the phone or visit the store. Sugarhill offer free consultations both in store and at your home. If you visit the store it helps to take a photo of the piece of furniture with you so that the staff will know exactly what you are describing. They will then work with you to achieve your desired effect. The benefit from having a home visit is that your piece of furniture can be measured and assessed in person so that the best advice can be given. Sugarhill offer a collection and delivery service to and from their workshops so you will not have to worry about moving your furniture. As well as residential customers, Sugarhill is picking up more trade from commercial customers. One of their mottos is that no job is too big or too small and this is reflected in their commercial work. Recent work has included refurbishments in McDonalds and local

pubs, clubs and bars. If you own a business and are thinking about refreshing your interiors then get in touch for a visit and a quote. Sugarhill also deal with leisure too, working with upholstery in both boats and caravans. Basically, if there is fabric involved then Sugarhill are able to help! The staff at Sugarhill love nothing more than to get their teeth stuck into a new project and can’t wait to see what comes through the door next. They have even been known to do trouser alterations! Whether it’s a whole building that needs doing or a single cushion you will find the same level of enthusiasm and professionalism.

Motoring

Peugeot 308 BlueHDi It’s no secret that the French firm hasn’t always produced beautiful motors – yet, conversely, Peugeot has created some of the most popular cars on the road

P

eugeot must have sprinkled fairy dust over its designers, because there are now some attractive motors in its automotive stable, including the 308. To bring more of a balance to the automaker’s looks department, the brand is moving up-market. It’s an initiative started several years ago and seen most recently with the 208 and 2008. The initial design brief of the new 308 had the highest levels of quality at its heart and that has been more than noticed already. Crowned 2014 European Car of the Year, at the Geneva Motor Show, the suave Peugeot offers a touch of technology, comfort and practicality. The latest 308 is the fourth Peugeot model to be distinguished by the ‘Car of the Year’ accolade; it comes after the 307 (2002), 405 (1988) and 504 (1969). The appearance of the Pug is more akin to the latest Mercedes Benz A-Class than anything else. The front of the car is dominated by a ‘floating’ front

32 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY grille and by a strong lighting signature. Slim full-LED headlamps glitter like diamonds and the striking illumination continues at the rear, with the three Peugeot lion ‘claws’ drawn by piercing red LED lamps. Inside, the 308 includes a touch-screen panel on the dashboard for added indulgence. It also has a practical purpose; it brings together many of the infotainment controls in one place, for ease of use and to create a contemporary and uncluttered cabin. Everything is arranged for an experience that is intuitive and relaxing so that you can focus entirely on the road ahead. The head-up instrument layout means that information can be clearly read easily and safely, looking over rather than through the wheel. The Peugeot also has a compact steering wheel and newly developed electric power steering, resulting in a responsive and controlled driving experience. My BlueHDi diesel powered model certainly impressed me with its ability to stick to the road and hug bends - even when pushed hard. The vehicle is stuffed to the brim with safety packages and the five door car also offers great fuel economy. There’s plenty of room for luggage and shopping, as well as for you and your front seat passenger. Rear seat travellers don’t have quite so much legroom, but headroom is fine and the rest of the car is cosseting enough to provide a soothing ride. The new 308 is seriously worth considering if you’re after a medium sized family motor. The fact that the model will also be manufactured and sold in China indicates just how much belief there is in this car.
