Welcome
to the March issue As I sit and write this the sun is blazing through the window and it really does feel like Spring is on the way, albeit there was a frost this morning! This month I have been busy at home building furniture, and redecorating our spare room – if nothing else it has been an opportunity to do a bit of Spring cleaning. I am looking forward this month to celebrating my Auntie’s 50th birthday. Celebrations are a great opportunity for family to get together and catch up from across the country. I’m sure she will thank me for publically mentioning this! Hopefully next month we will be talking sunshine and holidays.
Hayley x Hello! In many ways the March issue is all about choices – choosing a new bed, deciding which nursery or pre-school to place your child in, where to hold your wedding and all of the associated decisions which come with planning what might be the biggest day of your life. Luckily we are here with some ideas and solutions to help you. We even give you a few ideas about what you might like to choose as a gift for your Mum on Mother’s Day (don’t forget the date, it’s March 15). Elsewhere in the issue Boston College are celebrating a milestone and we join them in looking back at the last 50 years as well as looking forward to the next 50! Enjoy the issue

Flood warden Lorraine Andrews’ neighbours are fortunate to have Lorraine living close by. Not just because she’s a lovely lady, full of warmth and good humour. Lorraine is the Fenside flood warden. So her neighbours in Langrick Road will be first to know if a flood warning is given out for that area by the Environment Agency, because Lorraine will be the first to get it. She will pass the message on by visiting her neighbours to urge them to be prepared. Lorraine is a volunteer. She doesn’t get paid. So why is she a flood warden? “Initially for self preservation. But I also want to be a good neighbour,” explained the grandmother to ten. Before coming to live in a flood risk area in Boston in 2000 Lorraine lived a five-minute walk from the sea in Eastbourne in East Sussex. She had witnessed firsthand the catastrophic effects of flooding. Although her own home had escaped flooding she had seen the flood plain breached, flooding the cellars of properties in her road. She became an Environment Agency flood warden for her area in Eastbourne because if it happened again she wanted to be trained and prepared and among the first to be informed so she could be ready. She had no idea, when she moved to Boston, that similar flood risks would apply. Now, with the North Forty Foot drain yards away from her front door, and the River Witham not far from her back door she has maintained her flood warden status. Lorraine keeps an emergency bag packed for her own family’s use should they need to leave their home because of flood and keeps her flood warden high-visibility vest close by should the need to raise the alarm come. First on her list will be the vulnerable and elderly who will get a friendly knock at the door or, if they are not at home, a warning card through the letterbox. She said: “We need more flood wardens in an area like this. It’s not a huge responsibility. You are expected to put you and yours first and then help others where you can. But I’m not expected to carry them on my shoulders through chest-high flood water, or anything like that. “You just need a little bit of time and a willingness to want to help others. Full training is given, but it doesn’t take tons of your time.” She said that, because many people with a landline phone got a call on the occasion of the flood in December, 2013, they were incorrectly assuming they were signed up for flood warnings. “That’s not the case. The Environment Agency, through an arrangement with phone providers, was able, on that occasion to call people with a flood warning. But that’s not the same as being signed up for all flood warnings. You have to do that and make sure you receive flood warning messages by landline, email and mobile. That way you can be sure of getting the warning wherever you are – at home, at work or out doing the shopping or even away from home on holiday.” She urged all to sign up for the EA service saying: “Even though we had that big flood there are still people who don’t believe it can really happen. It can. It did. It may happen again. Flooding causes such distress when homes and business are flooded. I cannot advise strongly enough, please register with 4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
flood line; even better be a flood warden and be the first to hear and not the last to be flooded.” Lorraine is happy to speak to groups, clubs, organisations about being a flood warden and about being prepared for flooding. Contact her on 01205 363420. Contact Rachael McMahon, the Environment Agency’s Flood Resilience Advisor for Lincolnshire if you want to learn more about being a flood warden or need any other flooding information. Call Rachael on 01522 785904, mobile 07810 527156 or email her at rachael.mcmahon@environment-agency. gov.uk The aim is to get at least one flood warden for each ward in the area, preferably two to work in pairs. Wyberton currently leads the way with at least 12 new flood wardens in the pipeline. Funerals around the world Mourners on the other side of the world could “attend” funerals held at Boston Crematorium without ever leaving their homes. A large multi media screen and Skype link-up equipment would enable family members and friends living abroad to be part of proceedings and allow for pictures, messages and video recordings to be shared. Members of Boston Borough Council’s environment and performance committee heard from Cllr Carol Taylor who said she had gone to a funeral service where similar equipment was used. She said she did not really know the deceased very well but, with the aid of such equipment and the use of family images, she had left the service feeling she really had known the person. A report had been requested about bereavement services following a decline in number of funeral services at Boston Crematorium. The conclusion was that location and not cost was a major determining factor for choice of venue for funerals and two new crematoriums had opened at Surfleet and Alford. It was agreed to recommend reopening the Horncastle Road entrance to the cemetery for a trial period of six months. This has been closed in 1996 when a survey revealed that 47 per cent of vehicles entering the cemetery were using it as a rat run. The Marian Road entrance has been used as the main entrance. The report said that access to the crematorium is not ideal and reopening Horncastle Road would ease access, especially for those travelling from the East Lindsey side of town and when there is town centre traffic congestion. The location of Haven High Academy and Park School also cause problems in Marian Road at certain times. A suggestion was made that a timed barrier could allow access for hearses and funeral corteges, but block access by later rat runners. The Horncastle Road entrance would be closed at times when funerals were not being held, evening and weekend. Councillors heard there is room for burials in the cemetery for nine more years and a report is to be brought back to them later this year to consider allocating more land for burials. Despite a decrease in numbers of cremations – down from a peak of 2,016 in 2000 to a predicted 900 in 2013/14 – the service achieves a surplus each year of more than £100,000. So far this financial year it is up to £115,000.
In recent years £450,000 has been spent on refurbishment of the cremators and a new filtration plant and the crematorium has been redecorated, had some new lighting, an upgrade to its 23-year-old software system and some repairs to roadways. One hour slots are now offered to families from 9.30am to 3.30pm, ease arrival and departure congestion. It was recommended to increase cremation fees by £50 to £650, in line with Surfleet, but below those proposed for Grantham (£784) and slightly above Lincoln (£620 and Alford (£550). A programme of improvements was recommended including road resurfacing – there is a mile of roads within the cemetery – carpet renewal, redecoration of other areas, LED replacement lighting, removal of the illuminated cross and replacement with a multi media screen which will be able to display a cross for Christian services. Martin Potts, the bereavement service’s principal officer, said half of all services now had no religious content and requests were made to cover the cross. Cllr Paul Kenny said he only heard praise for the good service offered at the cemetery and the building needed bringing up to scratch. Cllr Helen Staples said she had never had a complaint about the bereavement service.
Love where you live Boston’s own self-styled “gully gal” has launched a “Love Where You Live” campaign to get town residents to take more pride in their property frontages. Cllr Carol Taylor has been instrumental in recent months in helping clear streets of parked cars when they have been targeted for essential gulley cleaning and street cleaning. Where streets have been cleaned some residents have been
so appreciative that they have come out afterwards to brush their own frontages to match the new tidiness. Cllr Taylor said: “I am urging householders, whether they own their home or rent it, to show pride in where they live by sweeping their frontage and collecting up and binning the sweepings, just like our mothers used to do when they also used to paint and polish their front steps. Dodrell and Liam Ingamells from Boston Grammar were invited to the Royal Academy of Engineering headquarters in London to present their experiences and thoughts on STEM activities they have been involved in over the past year. This was part of the Royal Academy of Engineering Celebration day. Boston Grammar School was the only school invited on the day and they presented their findings to the RA Eng teacher coordinators, STEM ambassadors and school headteachers from around the country. The presentation covered their successes in the Exploration Challenge, The Education Engineering scheme and the Gold Crest Award. The presentation went down very well prompting a great deal of questions from the audience. Student Jason Barnes has been awarded a sought-after Arkwright Engineering Scholarship that identifies him as one of the country’s future leaders in engineering and technical design. The Arkwright
Scholarships Trust is a charity founded in 1991 that inspires and nurtures future leaders in engineering and technical design. The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are awarded through a rigorous selection process and support high-potential young people during their ‘A’ Levels. Jason had to successfully complete a rigorous selection process consisting of a detailed application form, a two-hour aptitude exam and an interview hosted at a top engineering university. Dr Martin Thomas, Chief Executive of the Arkwright Scholarships Trust said: “I am delighted to see a student from Boston Grammar School secure this prestigious accolade. Clearly, there is considerable technical talent in the Boston area. With the competition for rewarding jobs becoming ever-more fierce, the receipt of an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship can help dynamic young people at the start of their journey to be the country’s future leaders in engineering and technical design.”

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston Because we are in the very earliest stages of planning I have to say “watch this space”... serious interest has been expressed to the council in development of Haven Wharf on the riverside along High Street. Parts of the building have been disused for about 20 years and this shows confidence in the Barrier scheme being delivered on time and able to do its job of flood protection. So... watch this space. I think we are in for an exciting time ahead. I know and understand concerns about some shop premises becoming vacant in the town. We are never complacent about this. Some will continue to trade and are moving to other premises. And two national chains are prepared to put their money into the town, showing they have confidence in Boston’s future. Competitive supermarket chain Lidl is to build a new store on a previously vacant site in Boston. It has been given permission to demolish an existing unit and build a food store with 64 car parking spaces on the former Boston Bedworld site in Tawney Street Pandora, a national jewellery chain, is already here. Jewellery is a luxury purchase, but two other jewellers have big plans. Maud’s is moving to bigger premises and Wilcox and Carter are expanding and having a total revamp. When businesses trading in luxury items such as jewellery are prepared to invest it says a lot about confidence in the future.
The council has again been recommended to accept a freeze in council tax. This will be no increase in the borough council’s portion of your council tax demand for the fourth consecutive year. Considering we are on target to meet our aim of £639,000 savings for 2015/16 and have presented a balanced budget and there are no proposed cuts in services, I am proud of this achievement. It recognises the tough times there have been for all of us in the continuing period of austerity. The budget will soon go out for consultation – so please make sure you have your say. I am always interested to hear views and opinions, whether you agree or not. Again, we are not complacent. We are already hard at work to achieve our targets of £480,000 savings in 2016/17 and £220,000 in 2017/18. We are always looking beyond the horizon and beyond the taxing concerns of the immediate, so I am pleased that support has been shown so far for a proposal that the borough should rejoin the Hanseatic League. Boston has historic connections with the Hanse countries across the North Sea, who, in centuries past, were our main trading partners and important for the town’s booming economy. Who knows what the future may bring. There will certainly be opportunities to develop cultural links which could benefit the visitor economy. And new business links with the Hanseatic countries could also lead to economic prosperity. Cllr Peter Bedford

Combatting Domestic Violence Manning

Domestic violence and abuse can happen to anyone, yet the problem is often overlooked, excused, or denied
his is especially true when the abuse is psychological, rather than physical. Noticing and acknowledging the signs of an abusive relationship are the first step to ending it. No one should live in fear of the person they love. If you recognise yourself or someone you know in the following warning signs and descriptions of abuse, reach out. There is help available. Domestic violence and abuse does not discriminate. It happens among heterosexual couples and in samesex partnerships. It occurs within all age ranges, ethnic backgrounds, and economic levels. And while women are more commonly victimised, men are also abused—especially verbally and emotionally, although sometimes even physically as well. The bottom line is that abusive behavior is never acceptable, whether it’s coming from a man, a woman, a teenager, or an older adult. Domestic abuse often escalates from threats and verbal abuse to violence. And while physical injury may be the most obvious danger, the emotional and psychological consequences of domestic abuse are also severe. Emotionally abusive
relationships can destroy your self-worth, lead to anxiety and depression, and make you feel helpless and alone. No one should have to endure this kind of pain— and your first step to breaking free is recognizing that your situation is abusive. Once you acknowledge the reality of the
abusive situation, then you can get the help you need. If you are experiencing any of these issues or know of somebody who is, please ring 101 or the National Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0808 200 247 or ring 999 in an emergency.

Library News
By Boston library staff, Boston Library
Boston Library March 2015 Pigs in Clover is the true story of what happens when a London based estate agent and property solicitor husband and wife decide to take on a small holding and become selfsufficient in Exmoor. Simon Dawson’s journey from London urbanite, reluctantly working the land and raising animals, to committed and passionate self -sufficient small holder is wonderfully described. His journey is not at all easy, being made redundant from his job as an estate agent and wondering where the money will come from to pay the bills and buy animal feed. Abandoned by friends and family, the journey taken by Simon is one of selfdiscovery and leads him to question modern farming practices and Mother Nature herself. His descriptive and poignant tale took me on an emotional roller coaster. One minute I was laughing out loud, the next I had tears brimming in my eyes and back to belly aching laughter on the next page; a thoroughly good read. It’s World Book Day on Thursday 5th March visit the library to see staff dressed up as their favourite book characters. Why not join us by dressing up as your favourite book character. February 5TH saw the first Harry Potter Book night. Thank you to all that took part, enjoy swishing your new wand but remember no turning anyone into toads!
Story time for pre-schoolers and their grown-ups is 2pm – 2.30pm; Friday 6th & 20th March April Friday 17th Plus check out Boston Borough Easter Holiday Activity guide or visit Boston Library for information on Easter children’s activities happening over the holidays.
To all those who have not experienced the Potter magic I highly recommend ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone’ by J. K. Rowling. The new cover illustrations by Jonny Duddle, now in stock at Boston Library, bring the fantastical world of Hogwarts to a new generation. Read on about how the boy who lived under the stairs grew up to become the world’s best wizard. ➤ Boston Library: Mondays - 9am to 5pm Tuesdays - 9am to 5pm Wednesday - 9am to 5pm Thursdays - 9am to 6pm Fridays - 9am to 5pm Saturdays - 9am to 4pm ➤ Telephone 01522 782010 (charged at local rate) or log on to www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/libraries.

Focus on Boston
Boston College Celebrates 50 Years of Success Boston College are currently celebrating 50 years of growth and success, since opening in September 1964, and having recently achieved an Ofsted grading as a ‘Good’ college, it continues it’s journey to become an outstanding provider of Further Education
B
oston College accepted its first students on Monday 7th September 1964, with its official opening held in 1965, under the leadership of Alan Moon as principal and offering just 19 courses which were paid for in cash. In its first year, the college was attended by 150 full time students, with a total of 24 teaching staff. College Principal, Amanda Mosek, said “I am very proud to be the principal of Boston College at the time when we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. Reading the curriculum offered years ago is a fascinating lesson in social history. Having the opportunity to talk to people who studied here in those early days makes me realise that even then, we were making a huge difference to people’s lives; something that we continue to do today.” Today, the college caters for over 7000 local and international students, offering more than 250 courses, and has over 450 members of staff. In 1964, A-levels were the main provision, Rowley Road was the main entrance and the site ended where the accommodation begins today, meaning the college has more than doubled in size. A-levels are still at the forefront of provision today, with 2014 seeing an impressive 100% pass rate. 1989 marked the 25th anniversary, and was an exciting era. The college has always been at the forefront of offering a diverse range of course and career options, and in the eighties BTEC vocational courses were introduced and Apprenticeships took off. This provided opportunities for learners wanting to study skills based courses, and progress into careers such as Motor Vehicle, Hairdressing, Beauty Therapy, Construction, Carpentry, Joinery and Plumbing,
16 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
to name just a few. These provisions enticed even more students to the college as there were now more than 70 courses to choose from. As a direct result of this, numbers increased to 750 full time students. Word spread of the success of students at the college, leading to an increase in enrolment. Excellent links with employers and teams of industry expert staff continue to make Boston College a leading provider of Apprenticeships In 2014, the college supported over 400 learners to successfully achieve apprenticeship programmes. In 1989, the college added the provision of degree level courses, meaning that students could continue with their studies into Higher Education locally. Today, the Boston College University Centre (BCUC) is the dedicated venue for the study of Higher Education, with 150 learners and 20 specialist lecturers qualified to Masters Level. In 2014 the BCUC was rated in the top 3 for student satisfaction out of 267 colleges and universities. Part time courses have always been a fixture at Boston College, encouraging adults to return to education and learn a new skill. Bite-size was launched as a brand in its own right in 2000 and is a brilliant opportunity for adults giving them a way back into learning. The press once printed, “The College prides itself on the strength of care and support it provides for its students and on the excellence of the examination results.”This is something that the college continue to work by today, with a large Learner Services team offering a range of support services to ensure that students get the best advice and guidance throughout college. Boston College provides an Enterprise Zone for the development of enterprise and to build
an entrepreneurial culture amongst learners. It is a space where learners and employers can come together so that students learn about the world of work and develop skills to make them more employable. Amanda Mosek said, “It truly is a 21st century learning space and a unique development for the College, making it stand out as an excellent choice for young people.” Boston College have their own commercial entity, ‘Lime’ restaurant and ‘Style Academy’ Hair & Beauty salon. Both businesses offer outstanding services at very reasonable costs. Catering and Hair & Beauty students run all aspects of each business, giving them the opportunity to train and gain experience working in commercial businesses, giving them a true insight into industry whilst being supported by highly experienced and professional staff. Both the facilities and the professionalism of the staff mean that students leave college confident and prepared to go on to deliver their own high standards in industry. Amanda Mosek added, “The College has grown, adapted and become stronger over the last fifty years and I know, with absolute certainty, that we will still be here playing a key role in the local community in another 50 years’ time.” The college is celebrating by holding an exhibition of photos, equipment and case studies from across the different eras and having an event in the summer. If you would like to share your experiences of Boston College or would like any more information on this, please contact the college as they would love to hear from you. Business Focus
Duncan & Toplis As the end of another tax year draws closer, it is an ideal time for you to consider taking some time to appraise your financial affairs
T
here are a number of things that we, as experienced advisers, would encourage our clients to consider, such as ensuring that exemptions and allowances have been utilised and maximising pension contributions. Our tax advisers are constantly looking at ways to prevent our clients from paying more tax than they need to. This could include a review of the structure of a business with a view to making it more efficient in the future. Perhaps you are currently trading as a sole proprietor or partnership but are thinking about the benefits that transferring your business into a company may bring. This is the kind of thing we enjoy getting involved in as it is rewarding to know we have made a difference. It’s not only businesses that can benefit from a little bit of time spent stepping back from the day to day matters. If you have children and you or your livein partner earn more than £50,000, it is likely you will be affected by the High Income Child Benefit Charge. With some planning, there are ways of reducing your income before the end of the tax year to minimise the impact of this. Pensions are another key area for individuals to look at, particularly with the changes coming in from April this year. So, we’ve given you a few things to think about but who are we and why would you come to us for advice?

National Bed Month
National Bed Month With March being National Bed Month, Lisa Artis from the Sleep Council talks about keeping warm in bed!
“Put on a pair of soft bed socks. The extra layer under the covers can help improve circulation in your extremities, which can help you fall asleep more quickly.”
I
❱ BY LISA ARTIS
don’t know about you but gosh it’s chilly at the moment and especially at night. It’s these kinds of days that make you want to go to bed earlier and stay in bed longer – however this only works if your bed is warm and cosy! According to one survey around half (49%) the population suffers sleepless nights because of the cold. With temperatures usually at their lowest in the early hours, many people find that they are sometimes too cold and uncomfortable to be able to get a good night’s sleep. So we’ve come up with some great tips to keep you warm in bed: l Wear night clothes such as pyjamas or a large T-shirt to keep you warm. Natural fibres such as wool, cotton or silk will keep you warmer than synthetic materials. l Put on a pair of soft bed socks. The extra layer under the covers can help improve circulation in your extremities, which can help you fall asleep more quickly. l Have a warm (not hot!) bath just before you go to bed. This will warm you up and will also help to make you sleepy. l Have a warming milky drink. l Try to take some exercise, not too close to bedtime, which will get the circulation going and help to keep
20 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
the body warm. It is also worth looking at the bedroom, the bed and the bedding all of which play a part in keeping you insulated in the cold night air. l Keep the bedroom warm, but not too hot, and free from draughts. Ideal room temperature is 16-18 degrees Celsius. l Avoid a saggy bed. It may be nice to cuddle up for warmth but it can be very uncomfortable and clammy when you are thrown together by a bed that isn’t giving you the correct support. l Look for a mattress which has a thicker side for use during the winter. A soft sleeping surface is a better insulator than a flat one. Use a fleecy underblanket to retain the heat. l Choose a duvet with a high tog rating or use several layers of bedding rather than one single layer. Layers will trap warm air and are easily removed if you get too hot. l A hot water bottle is an ideal way to keep warm once in bed. Make sure it has a cover on it to avoid scalding and also so that it won’t feel cold in the middle of the night. l Electric blankets or duvets are ideal. Underblankets will warm the bed up before you retire for the night, while overblankets maintain a constant temperature throughout the night.

Come Home with Shared Ownership Owning your own home is still one of the most commonly held aspirations in the UK, but it’s getting harder to get a foot on the property ladder. First time buyers and those who have found themselves having to start again are now looking for other options to help them find the home of their dreams
S
hared Ownership is a great alternative to outright home ownership for those on a lower income who might struggle to save a large deposit. That’s because you buy a partial share of a house and pay a subsidised rent on the rest. Shared ownership does not mean you share your house with someone else! The benefits of shared ownership are that as you are buying a smaller share you usually need a smaller deposit and the combined monthly cost of mortgage
repayment and rent payments is usually less than the market rent for a similar home. The property can be bought in stages, you can increase your ownership in the future by buying further shares, known as staircasing. Boston Mayflower has been providing affordable home ownership in the local area for more than fifteen years. They own and manage over 5,000 homes in Lincolnshire including several shared ownership options here in Boston and the surrounding area. We now have new build properties available in one of Boston’s premier locations.

Wedding Trends for 2015 What’s hot and what’s not for this year’s weddings ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
W
edding trends, from decorations to food, from honeymoons to the bride’s dress are always changing. To see how drastically, take a look at a wedding photo from 5, 10, 20 years ago and changes are quickly apparent, particularly when it comes to fashions! With online resources a popular tool for today’s brides new trends can be quickly adopted in the early planning stages. So if you have been invited to 2015’s Wedding of the Year or are beginning to plan your own big day what can you expect to see?
Engagement Rings Yellow gold was the staple for rings and then this changed to white gold and platinum. It would seem that these are now having to make way for rose gold and the single diamond is being changed to eternity style rows of smaller diamonds. There is also the emergence of engagement rings which do not feature a diamond as the main stone, with sapphires being popular, in no small part down to Kate Middleton!
Dresses Wedding dresses are as beautiful and as intricate as ever with a real trend back towards traditional gowns. Lace is big as are tributes to 1930s dresses. In a move away from tradition though bridal gowns in pastel colours are becoming increasing popular with powder blue and even mint green appearing. Capes are also gaining popularity with brides from just below the shoulder right the way to floor length.

Wedding Trends for 2015 Dresses Wedding dresses are as beautiful and as intricate as ever with a real trend back towards traditional gowns. Lace is big as are tributes to 1930s dresses. In a move away from tradition though bridal gowns in pastel colours are becoming increasing popular with powder blue and even mint green appearing. Capes are also gaining popularity with brides from just below the shoulder right the way to floor length.
Colour Schemes Blue is still the first choice for many, with deep royal blue still leading the way. Purples and pinks will also feature heavily this year with a return for browns and ivory being predicted. Bridesmaid dresses are often matched to the theme and this year you can pretty much take your pick! Colour is big again, out with the pastels (unless it’s for the wedding dress itself!) and in with the bold.
Flowers Tradition holds firm when it comes to flowers. Roses continue to dominate with roses still featuring heavily as well as peonies, ranunculus and hydrangeas. Florists are also finding that ‘greenery’ is also being increasingly requested.
Food
“...the tide has turned and trends are heading back towards a traditional tiered cake with textured icing.”
Weddings can vary greatly when it comes to food as the bride and groom will often take their own personal tastes as their starting point. Inviting your guests to enjoy a buffet for the wedding breakfast is set to become the new norm. Rather than being served at your table you can grab a plate and dish up exactly what you would like. The thinking behind this is that it makes the meal a more sociable occasion, allowing you to chat to fellow guests while you are deciding what you would like to eat. There is also a growing preference for providing late night food for guests attending the evening reception with midnight snacks such as bacon butties and mini foods such as tiny burgers and hot dogs. While we’re on the subject of miniatures, mini drinks – almost like tasters – are becoming popular with mini beers taking the crown.
24 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
Finally, when it comes to food the most important piece has to be the wedding cake. Individual cakes have been the first choice for brides for over a decade now but the tide has turned and trends are heading back towards a traditional tiered cake with textured icing. Alongside the cake dessert stands are still going strong.
Entertainment Wedding music is going retro with 70s bands finding themselves booked up all through the summer. Live music followed by a disco will often feature at the evening reception. The most popular song for the married couple’s first dance in the UK is Everything by Michael Buble followed by Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together and At Last by Etta James. Having ‘wandering’ entertainment is also becoming normal with magicians, caricaturists and silhouette artists often found mingling with the guests during any quiet periods.
The Honeymoon Couples who marry this year are more likely to reject a fortnight on a beach somewhere exotic and instead split their time between two destinations or even heading off on an adventure holiday, trekking to Machu Picchu or driving (or even riding!) the famous Route 66 in America. There is also a trend for “mini-moons” for couples who have trouble taking a long time off work. These take the form of city breaks and long weekends at destinations that are only a couple of hours’ flight away.

heelchair-bound travellers often find they are left behind when it comes to enjoying a day out or a holiday break with friends or family. But that doesn’t apply if they travel with Lawton’s. They have three tail lift coaches on their fleet to help everyone get away. These include a 53 seater Plaxton Panther which can accommodate up to six wheelchairs held safely inside the coach so that the wheelchair user can now travel with us without having to leave their chair – this enables them the freedom to enjoy the day out. The lift is always in place on all of our excursions & special days out so that even if you’re not in a wheelchair but have trouble managing the stairs you are more than welcome to use the lift – it’s a service that Lawton’s are happy to provide FREE OF CHARGE, just let the office know at time of booking if you require it. We also don’t charge extra for the front seats but they are allocated on a ‘first come-first serve’ basis. All of the executive coaches have on-board toilets, drinks servery, CD/DVD player, and air conditioning, are carpeted and are driven by very experienced and courteous drivers. The vehicles are also serviced every 4/6 weeks adhering to VOSA regulations and they have a LOLER test carried out on the tail-lifts every six month by a registered company. Every one of Lawton’s drivers undertake certificated refresher trainer twice a year by a registered provider on the correct
use of the tail-lift so that you can travel in the knowledge that you are in safe hands. Lawton’s Executive Coaches also welcome bookings from group organisers. If you are looking for a holiday break we can also offer these in conjunction with AC Williams of Ancaster – don’t worry about getting over to meet their coach – for a nominal fee we will collect you from your home & take you to meet their coach (please ask for more details). These range from an overnight stay in the capital city at only £79 per person staying in the Ibis Styles London Excel Sat 25-Sun 26 July. Choosing a nursery
Making the right choices When choosing a nursery or pre-school how influential can an inspection report be?
I
t’s an important decision. Your child will experience many ‘firsts’ in their lives and the first day at nursery or pre-school is a big one. And not just for them, but also for you as a parent. When drawing up your shortlist of establishments every parent will have different priorities on their lists. When visits take place there may be a carefully considered list of questions that you would like to ask and taking in the ambience of a place and experiencing it for yourself is second to none when getting a real feel for a place. But many articles, websites and forums will recommend you read the Ofsted reports. For many parents it will be the first time they have heard of it (save maybe when you were younger and your school may have had an Ofsted visit). So who are Ofsted, what are their reports and how much importance should be placed on their findings? Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. They inspect and regulate services that care for children and young people, and services providing education and skills for learners of all ages. Every week, they carry out hundreds of inspections and regulatory visits throughout England and publish the results online. They help providers that are not yet of good standard to improve, monitor their progress and share with them the best practice we find. Their goal is to achieve excellence in education and skills for learners of all ages, and in the care of children and young people. They report directly to Parliament and we are independent and impartial.
They are responsible for: g inspecting maintained schools and academies, some independent schools, and many other educational institutions and programmes outside of higher education g inspecting childcare, adoption and fostering agencies and initial teacher training g publishing reports of our findings so they can be used to improve the overall quality of education and training g regulating a range of early years and children’s social care services, making sure they’re suitable for children and potentially vulnerable young people g reporting to policymakers on the effectiveness of these services
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
When producing a report, Ofsted will assign grades to the quality and standard of Early Years provision across various areas. These range from Grade 1 which is ‘Outstanding’ to Grade 4 which is ‘Inadequate’. Whilst these grades can give a good overview it is perhaps more important to look at the content of the report where the inspectors go into more detail about what the setting does well and the things that require improvement. Some inspections speak to parents and report back on their general feelings towards the setting which you may also find useful. It is important to remember that everyone is looking for something different in a nursery or pre-school and these reports will help you as they highlight the strengths of any particular setting which will allow you to match them to your own expectations. Ofsted reports are best used in conjunction with all of the other plans you have in place – shortlisting, visiting, speaking to other parents so you can get the full picture before you make a decision.
“Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. They inspect and regulate services that care for children and young people, and services providing education and skills for learners of all ages.”

Focus on Woodhall Spa Woodhall’s Famous Air Squadron
W
“...codename Operation Chastise, was carried out on 17 May 1943. The squadron had to develop the tactics to deploy Barnes Wallis’s “Bouncing bomb.”
oodhall Spa is a beautiful village on the Southern Edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, steeped in history. During the Second World War the Petwood Hotel was requisitioned by the RAF becoming home to several squadrons. Perhaps the most famous of all of these was 617 Squadron, also known as the Dambusters. 617 Squadron was formed at RAF Scampton on March 21 1943. It included Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force and Royal New Zealand Air Force personnel and was formed with the specific task of attacking three major dams that contributed water and power to the Ruhr industrial region in Germany: the Möhne, Eder and Sorpe. The plan was given the codename Operation Chastise and was carried out on 17 May 1943. The squadron had to develop the tactics to deploy Barnes Wallis’s “Bouncing bomb”. The Squadron’s badge, approved by King George VI, depicts the bursting of a dam in commemoration of Chastise. The squadron’s chosen motto was “Après moi le Deluge” (“After me, the Flood”), a humorous double entendre on the supposed last words of King Louis XV of France. The original commander of 617 Squadron, Wing Commander Guy Gibson, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his part in the raid. On 15 July 1943 twelve aircraft of the squadron took off from Scampton to attack targets in Northern Italy. All aircraft attacked and proceeded to North Africa without loss. The targets were San Polo d’Enza and Arquata Scrivia power stations; it was hoped that the attacks would delay German troops who were travelling down into Italy on the electrified railway system to support the Italian front. The operation met little opposition but the targets were obscured by valley haze and they were not destroyed. The 12 crews returned to Scampton on 25 July from North Africa after bombing Leghorn docks on the return

journey. The raid on Leghorn Docks was not a great success due to mist shrouding the target. On 29 July 1943 nine aircraft took off from Scampton to drop leaflets on Milan, Bologna, Genoa and Turin in Italy. All aircraft completed the mission and landed safely in Blida North Africa. Seven of the aircraft returned to Scampton on 1 August, one on the 5th and the last on the 8th. Throughout the rest of the war, the squadron continued the specialist and precision bombing role, including the use of the enormous “Tallboy” and “Grand Slam” ground-penetrating earthquake bombs, on targets such as concrete U-boat shelters and bridges. The Dortmund-Ems Canal was finally breached with Tallboys in September 1944.

Kitchen Makeover
Is it time for a kitchen makeover? Is your kitchen looking tired or the space not working for you? Perhaps it’s time to reassess…
F
or many the kitchen is the heart of the home. As well as being used for food preparation the kitchen can also be a social hub, where friends and family gather. Whatever you use your kitchen for it should be set up so that it works for you and your particular circumstances. Your kitchen can look absolutely beautiful but if it is not functional for you then it is time to rethink. So what options are available to you? One of the biggest problems people face with their kitchens is that their needs and the layout are at odds. If the kitchen is a social hub is there room for a table and chairs or a breakfast bar for mornings and coffees? If you like your appliances are there sufficient sockets? How long since your kitchen was installed? Kitchen design today is so inventive when it comes to space – a modern kitchen design uses every nook and cranny which can be especially handy if space is at a premium! If you want to start from scratch or are thinking about making major changes to your existing kitchen then the best thing to do is to book a home visit from a company which specialises in kitchens. Taking your measurements to a large national chain store leaves you
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN wide open to errors on your part as well as potentially entrusting your kitchen to someone whose main responsibilities don’t actually include kitchen design! By using a specialist you can be assured that you are benefitting from their expertise. Having an appointment at home allows not only for measurements to be taken but also to discuss your options fully – not just styles and finishes but also other ways to stretch your budget whilst not compromising on quality. Some kitchen specialists offer a total kitchen package so as well as units and worktops they also offer tiles, flooring and appliances which means that you will only need to use one company, avoiding any scheduling issues – you don’t want to be in a situation whereby you are waiting for one company to lay your flooring before your kitchen installation can begin. The best kitchen firms are very busy so if you are co-ordinating several workmen make sure that everyone knows where they have to be and when! A kitchen can take on so many forms it is worth taking the time beforehand to decide on a rough idea of your requirements. Where possible see if you can get a drawing of how it will look (a 3D one is even better if they are available) to make sure that what you are seeing in your mind matches up with the reality.
“...making major changes to your existing kitchen then the best thing to do is to book a home visit from a company which specialises in kitchens.”

During design, Suzuki aimed for a resolution of the contradictory elements of retaining interior space within a compact body. By going back to basics in development and reviewing the body structure, Suzuki has succeeded in delivering a roomy and comfortable interior within a shell measuring just 3,600mm in length and a width of 1,600mm. The Celerio has a turning circle of just 9.4 metres too, making it one of the most manoeuvrable motors in its class. A height of 1,540mm and a non-slanting roofline allows greater headroom for everyone. The 2,425mm long wheelbase provides a tandem distance of 743mm which gives plenty of space in the cabin for five-up. The car offers low CO2 emissions
of 99g/km and 65.7mpg on the EC combined cycle from its 1.0-litre three cylinder engine. This summer a new engine will be available offering even higher combined fuel economy of 78.4 mpg and CO2 emissions that fall to just 84g/km thanks to the introduction of Suzuki’s new Dualjet engine technology. This technology will also incorporate a stop start facility when stationary. Also available in the summer will be Suzuki’s newly developed Auto Gear Shift (AGS). This system features an Intelligent Shift Control Actuator positioned at the top of the transmission that operates the gearshift and clutch automatically. With AGS, you can enjoy the effortless driving of an automatic, particularly in City traffic, but without any loss in fuel efficiency or increase in CO2 emissions. In addition, a unique feature of the Suzuki AGS is a low speed ‘creep’ facility which allows the car to move in gear without the accelerator being applied, ideal in slow traffic and when parking. It’s worth noting that the Celerio scored only three stars out of a possible five in its Euro NCAP safety test - but that was attributed to the fact that the test car did not have side airbags. That said, I’m pleased to say all Celerios sold in the UK have these fitted.

Bleak House, The Pantaloons Theatre Company Venue: Blackfriars Arts Centre, Boston Fog everywhere. Fog up the river where it flows among green aits and meadows; fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping, and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city...” Join The Pantaloons Theatre Company for a fog-filled adventure in Victorian London. When a dead body is discovered in Mr Krook’s Rag-and-Bone shop, a web of mysteries starts to untangle, with far-reaching consequences. Hilarious, tragic and romantic by turns, Dickens’ darkly comic masterpiece is retold by The Pantaloons in their own inimitable style. A company of five actor-musicians bring the novel’s cast of over 50 characters to life in a thrilling tale of love, skulduggery and spontaneous combustion...
