Welcome to the July issue How is it already summer? It doesn’t seem two minutes and we were all wrapping Christmas presents and here we are at the longest day and the nights will begin to draw in. Before I do anything else I would like to say a huge well done to all those involved in the first Spalding Music & Beer-fest that took place at the end of May. Huge numbers of people attended the three day event, large sums were raised for local charities and it was nice to see a local event once again in the town – here’s to many more years! This issue is jam packed with ideas to entertain the children over the summer, inspiration for improving your home, advice from Martin Lewis on savings and Tim test drives the Range Rover Vogue. We have had a phenomenal response to our recent competitions to win a spa break at Ragdale Hall and tickets to see Bryan Ferry in concert. Well done to Tracey Nightingale who won the Ragdale break and Stephanie Lamont who won a pair of tickets to see Bryan Ferry. We hope to bring you more competitions to win prizes later in the year. Elsewhere we explore the local area looking at Heckington Mill’s history and the milling that continues today. We are always looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left to say is to have a great month and enjoy the hot weather!

War memorial clean-up BEFORE

AFTER

Nearly complete

4 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Andrew Baker’s kind offer to give Boston War Memorial a clean-up became a mission once he started work. As decades of grime were removed, revealing gleaming as-new stonework beneath, Andrew could not rest and leave the rest of the surroundings looking so grimy by comparison. Now he and colleague Ian Stones, have carefully cleaned the main memorial, the two smaller memorials and all the stone steps, seating and paving. Andrew runs Jetadrive Lincs, and Aquamist, specialising in cleaning drives, patios, stonework, decking and windows. He ran a cautious test on a small part of the war memorial before the two turned in two 14-hour days on Bank Holiday Monday and Tuesday. They gave some areas a low pressure wash while other delicate areas had to have specialist chemical treatment and a soft wash down by hand. He made the offer to clean the memorial as his tribute to those from his home town who had made the ultimate sacrifice and set to after meeting with Boston Borough Council to discuss the methods to be employed. He said: “I looked into it for three

weeks to be sure we would use the best methods for the best effect. I have even been in contact with experts in America and I think I can reduce the green copper staining on one of the faces of the memorial.” All that remains to be done now is the very top of the memorial. The council is to provide a cherry picker so that Andrew can clean those inaccessible places. Cllr Paul Skinner, Boston Borough Council’s town centre portfolio holder, said: “Boston Borough Council is grateful for the work done for free by Andrew to give not just the war memorial but the whole of Memorial Gardens an as-new look. Using his expertise and dedication he has carefully removed decades of grime. “Andrew and Ian have demonstrated superbly exactly the sort of volunteer and community-spirited mentality that will get these extras done in these financially-straitened times. I know this became a mission for Andrew, taking him beyond his original kind offer to clean just the memorial. He has now also cleaned all the paving and the other, smaller memorials in the gardens.”

Environment award for Boston in Bloom Boston in Bloom has won an award for its focus on the environment. The in-bloom campaign has gone from success to success since being launched just four years ago when it immediately won a silver award. It was highly commended in the community category of the recent Lincolnshire Environmental Awards, just missing out on the top spot which went to Mareham Pastures Nature Reserve, a project running for more than ten years. Following a visit by a member of the judging panel in April, the Boston in Bloom Partnership was selected as one of three

finalists in the awards which recognise excellence in environmental work. The presentation to the judging panel, which included Professor David Bellamy, focused on wildlife-friendly planting and habitats at Geoff Moulder Leisure Centre grounds, Fydell House, B&M, Haven Bridge and Witham Way Country Park. Specific environmental features included meadow, orchard, green roof, bug hotels, beefriendly planting and rainwater harvesting. This year’s in-bloom judging in Boston takes place early next month when it is hoped the town will retain last year’s gold award standard. Alison Fairman, chairman of Boston in Bloom, appealed for everyone to make a big effort to present the town at its best in time for the tour by the Royal Horticultural Society judge on Friday, July 8.

Donations for crash fatals Donations have begun to come in to develop a restful memorial space in Boston’s Westgate Woods for Lincolnshire’s road accident victims. Since the appeal was launched, £1,000 has been pledged by Churches Together in Boston and individual donations of cash have been made. The project aims to provide a space in the woods accessible by all, for relatives, friends and colleagues to come and remember those who have died in tragic circumstances on county roads. One of the project team is Anne Bourne, of Boston, who lost her daughter in a horrendous crash in which four people died and five children were left without their mothers. Her other daughter was seriously injured. Anne, who has the support of the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, said: “I was lost for words when the £1,000 was donated. And it has been so nice to have donations from individuals. This is a very personal initiative and it will be very close to the hearts of those who support it.” If you want to make a donation you can pay in to the Louise

and Sarah Memorial Fund at Lloyds Bank, account number 01303486, sort code 30-91-04 And watch out for Anne and her supporters at the Boston Bike Night on Thursday, July 7, when they will be accepting donations. They will also be collecting at the superbike championships at Cadwell Park on August 27 to 29.

New health and weight loss service for Lincolnshire

Individuals, business and groups can get health and weight loss advice and support for themselves, employees and members via a new Lincolnshire service. The Healthy Living Team at Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) has been created to continue and build upon the work done by the LCVS health trainer service. Jan Gould-Martin, LCVS senior health and social care officer, said: “We were determined not to see the expertise and professionalism of the service lost and have therefore created this new look team to deliver something we know is greatly needed in Lincolnshire. “The record of LCVS health trainers speaks for itself – we know the service makes a real difference to people and helps improve and even prolong lives. “This new service provides an opportunity for people to keep benefiting from the reputable and reliable advice and

support of this team.” The Healthy Living Team is manned by qualified health trainers from the former LCVS health trainer team. With increasing pressure on budgets, funding for the team was withdrawn by Lincolnshire County Council Public Health in April of this year, meaning the service can no longer be provided free. However the team aims to empower and enable clients to establish their own health routines and address their own hurdles to health in as few sessions and at as little cost as possible. One-to-one sessions can cost as little as £20 each for up to one hour, with remote support available at £6 per month. Other services are tailored and costs are available following discussion. The team is also committed to continuing to deliver the projects the former LCVS health trainer team had been

As well as Keep Active With Dementia courses in South Holland and South Kesteven and Arts for Dementia in South Kesteven, supported by Lincolnshire’s Dementia Support Fund. An eye for an eye? Criminals who prey on the blind could have to experience what it is like to lose their sight following a blindfolded experience by Boston’s community policing inspector. Insp Andy Morrice experienced what it is like to negotiate the busy town centre without the benefit of sight. After his blindfold experience, organised by Roger and Molly Fixter, both sight impaired and members of Boston Disability Forum, Insp Morrice said: “From a policing angle this opportunity has given me a real insight into how terrible being a victim of criminal activity must be for anyone in this situation. “I am looking at ways I can actually roll this out as part of a restorative justice process, to make people responsible for crime against our most vulnerable understand the true impact of their behaviour, by getting them to take part in something similar as part of the restoration.” Members of Boston Town Area Committee (BTAC) and Insp Morrice walked blindfolded along Dolphin Lane and across Boston’s busy Market Place. The walk was to demonstrate the difficulties people with sight loss face on a daily basis. The event also aimed to show how important it is that blind and partiallysighted people receive the care and support they need to get out and about. Each person was given a

blindfold and a white cane and was led by helpers from Mitre Lane onto Dolphin Lane and then onto the Market Place where they walked across the busy pedestrianised and trafficked area. They were not warned of any obstacles in their path, such as people, shop signage, tables and chairs or uneven surfaces. Cllr Sue Ransome said: “I was pleased to do this walk today. I do have friends who are blind and are partially sighted, I was aware that there are problems in Boston town centre. I will be chasing the county council to help to alleviate some of the hazards on the footways. “I found the walk in Dolphin Lane

very difficult. The amount of obstacles is unbelievable. I had the advantage of knowing that there is drainage gully in the middle, so stuck very close to that. Smells were a very good clue to aid orientation; the cleaning fluid at Regency Cleaners was a clue, the noise and cooking smells from Crumbs cafe/restaurant was another clue. “I was pleased to be in the Market Place. It was less oppressive and I felt safer; strange, I know, but I could hear the vehicles and felt very safe. I know I went at a peculiar angle across the Market Place and had to negotiate the kerb outside the Butterfly Hospice which was difficult. When I stepped up onto the pavement I was really wobbly and was frightened I would fall over.” Insp Morrice said: “I think from my perspective what it highlighted to me was just how vulnerable certain sections of our society are. I actually felt OK down Dolphin Lane; I felt a perception of being enclosed and safe, although I had no idea of what was going on around me. This feeling of having no idea of what was going on really manifested itself when crossing the road in the Market Place, I could hear vehicles but had no perception of how close they were, whether they were coming towards me or not, and I really felt I was putting my life in someone else’s hands when stepping out to cross the road.”

25% rise in people reporting

itizens Advice is warning of a growing problem with new and expectant mums being treated unfairly at work. Between April 2015 and March 2016 almost 2,000 people turned to Citizens Advice for help with pregnancy and maternity discrimination, up from just over 1,500 in the previous 12 months. In 4 out of 5 cases people were also seeking help with problems at work, a third of which were about redundancy or dismissal. Evidence from Citizens Advice reveals pregnant women and new mums have had their working hours cut, been put onto zerohours contracts, pressured to return to work early from maternity leave and, in extreme cases, have been forced out of their jobs. One woman turned to her local Citizens Advice for help when her employer cut her weekly hours by more than half after she told them she was pregnant. Her boss claimed there was not enough work available to keep her on her previous hours, despite taking on new staff at the same time. Another woman contacted her employer to find out why she hadn’t received any maternity pay. They told her they had ended

Recent research by the Equality and Human Rights Commission revealed that over three quarters (77%) of mothers reported a negative or possibly discriminatory experience at work during their pregnancy, maternity leave or on their return to work. It is against the law for bosses to discriminate against their employees by refusing to uphold their maternity rights at work. Citizens Advice is encouraging people to seek help if they think they’re being treated unfairly by their employer. Schools and growers groups join growing contest

Primary schools, community organisations and growing groups in Skegness, Spalding and Boston have pledged to get composting for a new contest. A dozen schools and groups across the three areas registered to join the Anglian Water Keep It Clear Fat of the Land Composting Challenge, in association with Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service. Free specialist composting bins, worth around £180 each, have been presented to each of them and a total of 600 giant pumpkin seeds.

At Bicker Preparatory School, just before the half term holiday, our year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed a residential stay at Rand Farm, near Lincoln. They worked with Mr. Dennett of Dennett’s Icecream to learn how the business started after the first world war, and how ice-cream making has changed over the years. The children had a workshop with a lady who is very knowledgeable on rare breeds of sheep. She showed the children her spinning wheel and the children saw how to card sheep’s wool to get out all the knots. This short residential stay happens every two years from Bicker Prep School. Collette Parker, Keep It Clear customer engagement manager, said: “We are thrilled so many people have embraced the contest which is all about raising awareness of compost bins now available that allow food waste to be recycled. “Getting people recycling food waste helps to ensure fats, oils and other items are kept well away from drains. “Putting those items in drains causes costly, unpleasant and inconvenient blockages whilst composting allows them to be put to great use, helping gardens to thrive.” The groups and schools that have signed up to the Fat of the Land Composting Challenge are now going head-to-head to try to win gardening vouchers totalling £1,200. To win they will need to keep their composting bins topped up and demonstrate the results. All have been challenged to create an innovative

The children work with the animals: milking cows, feeding calves, mucking out pens etc. Quote from Class teacher Mrs Wendy Bell, ‘As well as finding out about agriculture, the children learn to become more independent as they look after their own belongings and organise themselves into groups to clean out the various animals on the farm.’ The photograph shows Class 5 on the Outside Play area at Rand Farm with our Headteacher Mrs Julie Miles.

The Anglian Water Keep It Clear campaign is raising awareness of the need for fats, oils, food waste, wipes and sanitary waste to be kept out of drains and toilets. Recipients of free composting bins and registered to take part in the challenge include: In Boston: • Boston West Academy • Boston St Mary’s Primary School • Boston in Bloom • Willoughby Road Allotment Association • Fydell House Julie Walmsley, teaching assistant and one of the gardening club helpers at Boston St Mary’s Primary School, said: “I think it’s a really good idea because it teaches the children where rubbish can go instead of landfill and that you can grow things from it.”

Library news Adult Book Choice Misery by Stephen King Misery is one of the many masterpieces by the phenomenal Stephen King and has become one of my favourite novels to date. You are gifted with not one but two stories, characters within characters as the protagonist Paul Sheldon - a novelist subject to a car accident in a snow storm- also has his works injected into the book. At first he’s doing what he loves, writing for a living with his audience waiting on his next piece, however, as the story develops he writes in order to save his life. Annie Wilkes, his nurse and the one responsible for his rescue, is a peculiar character that shows her intended nurturing side in the hope she can mask this inner feral woman with horrific intentions. It’ll have you on the edge of your seat as well as cowering in the corner, as you see this apocalyptic world through Paul’s eyes.

Heckington Windmill

T

he mill was originally built in 1830 by Edward Ingledew of Gainsborough for Michael Hare as a five-sailed mill. Following a severe thunderstorm which blew off the cap and sails, it was repaired in 1892. The repairs were carried out by John Pocklington using a cap and eight sails from a windmill in Boston. The bricks from the Boston mill were recycled and used to build the mill house that stands at the front of the site. Heckington mill ceased work in 1946 and deteriorated until it was purchased by Kesteven County Council in 1953 and made safe. The mill underwent restoration in 1986 and further major repairs were carried out in 2004 and is now in full working order.

The mill is now owned by Lincolnshire County Council, but is operated and run on a voluntary basis by Heckington Windmill Trust. The original 8 sails that you see at Heckington today were not built for the tower that now stands on the site. The cap overhangs the tower bricks, confirming that it came from a different mill. William Wedd Tuxford built the original Skirbeck 8 sailed mill in Boston in 1813 and successfully operated it for most of the 19th century. In 1891 it was put up for auction and was sold to John Pocklington of Wyberton for £72.10.0d, on the condition that it was completely cleared from the site. This he did, taking the sails and machinery to fit on the redundant tower at Heckington and used the bricks from the Skirbeck tower to build the Victorian mill house at

DID YOU

KNOW... …Heckington is believed to be the only location in the UK (and probably the world!) where there have been windmills with 4, 5, 6, and 8 sails.

Heckington. Heckington windmill is fully operational and they have the ability to grind their own wheat for flour. There are two types of mill stone, Derbyshire grit stones which produce wholemeal flour and French stones, used for white flour. The output from the French stones needs to be bolted (sieved) to remove the bran, so you can also buy stoneground white flour. The sieving process also produces a flour called Special Brown which is high in bran, and bakes a brown loaf. All wheat used is English, and for the last few years has been grown around the village of Heckington, in sight of the windmill. It makes very good bread, using both traditional methods and bread machines, it is also good for cakes and biscuits. There is a recipe on sale at the windmill for Recipes and a cookbook are available at the mill to help you be inspired to bake at home. Pocklington’s mill was built with 5 sails and changed to 8 in 1892 and Mowbray’s (or Mowberry’s) Mill on Sleaford Road, Heckington had both 4 and 6 sails in its past. Today all that remains is the derelict tower. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 17

Personal Savings Allowance

I

f you’ve got savings, next time you receive a statement expect to see something rather strange. There’s been a hidden revolution of the savings rules, and it means when you’re paid interest, from now on no tax will automatically be taken off. It’s all due to the new Personal Savings Allowance (PSA), which launched at the start of the new tax year on 6 April. Previously, unless you were saving in an ISA, when you earned interest, the taxman took a bite. So for every £100 interest earned as a basic-rate taxpayer, you only actually got £80 (higher rate got £60). Yet now, if you earn interest within your PSA, you get £100 and you keep £100. For a detailed Q&A on it, read www.mse.me/PSA, but here are my quick need-to-knows. - All savings interest is now paid gross, i.e., no tax will be taken off. - This works for ALL interest - not just savings accounts, but bank accounts, credit unions and peer-to-peer savings. However, share dividends aren’t included. - Basic 20% rate taxpayers can earn £1,000/yr interest tax-free. - Higher 40% rate taxpayers can earn £500/yr interest tax-free. - Top 45% rate taxpayers don’t get a PSA, so all interest is taxable. - Cash ISAs, premium bonds and other taxfree savings interest DON’T count towards the £1,000 (or £500) limit so you can get this interest too. - If you earn interest over the limit, you pay tax at your income tax rate, but only on the amount over the limit. It’s worth thinking about this for a moment. For a basic rate taxpayer, with cash in the top easy-access standard savings account, you’d need over £75,000 saved before you had to start paying tax on it. That’s why 95% of people won’t pay tax on their savings interest this year. As for most people tax is no longer an issue with savings, where you should have your cash has changed. It’s now usually simply a question of where you can earn the most interest. So first, check your savings today and find what they earn. You’ll be shocked - rates have plummeted. The first thing you should look at, even before saving, is clearing any expensive debt or overpaying an expensive mortgage (one 20 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

where the interest rate is higher than the top rate you can earn by saving). After that it’s a question of putting each penny where it earns the most. So here’s my savings fountain to do that. Fill up each level if you can and then move to the next (all the accounts I’ve listed have the full UK £75,000 savings safety protection). HELP TO BUY ISA. For anyone 16+ who’s never owned a home and may want to, these are usually a no-brainer. This is because as well as interest you can use it towards a mortgage deposit and 25% is added on top, up to a maximum of a free £3,000. The top payers are www. halifax.co.uk and www.santander.co.uk at 4%. For full help on if this is right for you, see www.mse.me/helptobuyisa HIGH-INTEREST CURRENT ACCOUNT. Some accounts offer high in-credit savings rates to entice switchers - it’s the only way to earn decent interest on decent amounts. The top ones are the www.Santander.co.uk 123 account paying 3% in between £3,000 and £20,000 (with a £5/mth fee, but that is often covered, as the account also pays cashback on bills) and the www.LloydsBank. com Club Lloyds account, paying 4% between £4,000 and £5,000. Others pay up to 5% interest, though on smaller amounts. For the full range and eligibility criteria see www.mse.me/topbanks REGULAR SAVINGS. These pay high interest but only on small amounts, generally for a short time. They’re great for, er, saving regularly, but you can also trickle lump sums in there too. The top ones are linked to current accounts – 6% is possible for a year on up to £300 a month in www.Firstdirect.com’s

regular saver and 4% on up to £250/month with the www.HSBC.co.uk Premier/Advance accounts. If you’ve got an M&S, Lloyds, Nationwide or Santander current account, see if one’s available to you too. NEW £15,240 CASH ISA ALLOWANCE - 1.85% TAX-FREE. A cash ISA is just a tax-free savings account and as it’s the new tax year, you’ve a new £15,240 allowance. Crucially, interest from this doesn’t count towards the £1,000 (or £500) PSA limit - so it’s good for those who’ll earn over that threshold. Yet for many there’s little point, see my www.mse.me/ ISAsdead guide for when they’re still right for you. The top straightforward easy access deals are www.coventrybuildingsociety.com, paying 1.4% AER variable (minimum £1). If you’ve got poorly-paying old ISAs you want to transfer, the www.YBS.co.uk Triple Access Saver ISA is 1.35% but only allows you to make withdrawals on three days each year (minimum £100). You can earn more in fixed rate ISAs though, see www.mse.me/cashisas. FIXED-RATE SAVINGS. If you’ve got money left over, next consider whether you’re prepared to lock it away without access. If so, you can fix with a locked-in rate that’s usually higher than easy-access savings. The top straightforward 1 year deal is CharterSavingsBank.co.uk 1.91% AER (minimum £1,000) and www.sbiuk.com is 2.2% for 2 years and 2.35% for 3 (min £10k).

4

5

6 - Easy-Access Savings Anything now left over that you need access to can be put in here. Rates are low compared with everywhere else, but you can deposit and withdraw when you want. The top deal is www. ybs.co.uk at 1.3%, though it only allows one withdrawal per year. For unlimited withdrawals, the Income Bond from

www.nsandi.com pays 1.26%, though the rate’s dropping in June, but www.sbiuk. com is 1.25%. Martin Lewis is the Founder & Editor in Chief of Money Saving Expert. To join the 10 million people who get his Martin’s Money Tips weekly email, go to www. moneysavingexpert.com/latesttip

Let’s eat cake!

Quick And Easy Mini Pizzas Ingredients 450g strong white bread flour 2 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 7g sachet fast-action yeast 350ml warm water 2 tsp. salt Equipment: Large bowl Oven: 240C, Gas Mark 9, 220C

In a large bowl, mix together the yeast, flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Once this is all mixed together, create a well in the middle. In a separate jug, mix together the oil and the water and then pour into the bowl. Then, work the liquid into the flour mix to create the dough. Leave the bowl to one side for 15 minutes. Create a well-floured surface and put flour on your hands then begin to knead the dough. Do this for about 2 minutes until it is soft and even. Put the dough back in the bowl and cover it with oiled cling film. Leave it once again to one side (preferably in a warm place). When the dough has risen to double its size, heat the oven and place a baking sheet on a high shelf. Then dust another

Chocolate Chip Short Bread Cookies Ingredients ½ teaspoon of baking powder 225g plain flour ¼ teaspoon of salt 100g caster sugar 225g unsalted butter 60g walnuts (chopped) 125g chocolate chips

Banoffee Loaf

Ingredients 3 medium ripe bananas, mashed 300g plain flour (extra for dusting) 150g salted butter 175g light muscovado sugar 2 large free-range eggs 1tsp bicarbonate of soda 150m semi skimmed milk 75g vanilla fudge, cut to small cubes

Preheat the oven to 150C or Gas Mark 2. In a medium sized bowl, mix together the sugar and the butter. Do this until the mixture becomes light and fluffy. In a separate bowl add together the flour, the baking powder and salt. Then sieve them together into the butter and sugar mixture. Gradually stir in then add the walnuts and chocolate chips and stir in again. Roll the dough into 12 small balls and place them on a greased baking tray evenly spaced apart. Flatten them slightly on top before putting them in the oven for 15-20 minutes. When they are ready the edges of the cookies should be a golden brown.

Preheat the oven on 180c (or Gas Mark 4). Use a 2 litre loaf tin and grease it with butter and cover lightly with flour, shaking off an excess. In a bowl, mix together the butter and sugar using an electric whisk. Do this until the mixture is light and fluffy. Then, one at a time, add the eggs and beat into the mixture. Using a sieve, sift in the flour and bicarbonate soda. Mix in

while gradually adding the milk until the mixture is smooth. Fold in the mashed bananas and the chopped fudge into the mixture. Scoop the mixture into the loaf tin and smooth down the top. Bake for one hour. Halfway through cooking, cover the loaf with foil to stop the top from burning. Once you’ve taken it out the oven leave to cool for ten minutes. Enjoy!

Home & garden

Add a little luxury ...with a spa inspired bathroom

RELAX & UNWIND Sprinkle some rose petals to add fragrance

A

s lovely as it is to visit a spa for a bit of indulgence, leaving is always a little difficult. Luckily, making a few changes to your own bathroom can help create a little slice of spa-style luxury in your very own home.

Fix a Heated Towel Rail

Attend to Your Senses

Spas aim to make everything as soft and comfortable as possible, and you can recreate that attention to relaxation by installing a heated towel rail in your bathroom. A heated towel rail will ensure that your towels remain toasty warm and free from moisture, so you’ll never have to dry yourself off with a wet, cold one again. Invest in a fluffy dressing gown and a nice pair of slippers for added comfort!

Spas go to great lengths to ensure that their facilities look, smell, and feel as luxurious as possible. Burn a candle or stick of incense to create the right mood, and make sure your space looks as inviting as possible by clearing away clutter, and adopting a simple décor with plenty of earth tones. However, don’t be afraid to include a larger piece of artwork to help set the mood.

Consider Underfloor Heating If you’re fully renovating your bathroom, consider laying down underfloor heating. The warmth rises up evenly across the room, and stops you from laying your feet down on a cold surface when you step inside.

A INSTALL POOL BATH WHIRL

Blow the Budget If you feel like going all out, why not install a sound system and mood lighting?

Plant

of the month

SNAPDRAGONS The Latin name for these lovely flowers is Antirrhinum, which means “like a snout”. This is the reason for the plants most common name as the plant has a resemblance to the snout of a dragon when squeezed. Snapdragons come in every colour except for blue and can grow between 30-49 inches high. They thrive best in full sun light or very light shade and the best soil to plant them in is in rich and welldrained soil. 24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Few bathroom fixtures are as tempting as a whirlpool bath. Sinking into the hot water after a long day at work to be massaged by gentle jets is a fantastic way to relax away your evening. The pressure makes you feel weightless, and even helps cleanse your skin and sooth your tired muscles, so whirlpool baths are a perfect way to bring the spa back home.

Should you Move or Improve? How Much Does a House Extension Cost? It’s not an easy question to answer and obviously depends on a number of factors, but that’s not the answer you’re looking for is it? You’re really looking for a very rough figure, a general guideline, a starting point. OK, I’ll try my best. Let’s start with a basic single storey extension, say 4m x 5m You may have heard that the rule of thumb is £1,000 per m2. However, this figure has been bandied about for rather a long time now! From experience, £1,200 – £1,500 per m2 is a now a more realistic estimate for a house extension cost in 2015 and reflects price increases over the last few years. So, for your 4 x 5m extension, the build cost at the lowest end of these estimates would be roughly £24,000 + Add on 10-15% for professional fees (architect, planning application, building

regs, structural engineer) + VAT Single storey extension = £32,000 How about a double storey extension, same footprint? As a rule of thumb you can add 50% extra to the build cost of a single storey extension. So, £24,000 +50% = £36,000 + Add on 10-15% for professional fees (architect, planning application, building regs, structural engineer) + VAT Double Storey Extension = £48,000 These figures would apply to a typical, uncomplicated extension.

you Moving may give to ity un the opport ea, ar w ne move to a ide ts ou ur increase yo e th as l el w space as e. ac sp e hous

Sound like a lot? Think about the costs of ‘moving up’ the housing ladder… Selling an average 3 bed home at £175,000 would cost: Estate agent fees – 1% + vat = £2100 Solicitor Fees for buying and selling, plus associated costs £2500 approx Stamp Duty on house purchase of £240,000* £2,300 Removals - £750 approx Difference between sale and purchase price* - £65,000 Cost of Move = £72,650 *Purchase of an average 4 bed house at £240,000

This car is big – and it never lets you forget that. Even behind the wheel you are aware that you’re in charge of a two-tonne luxury machine.

I

think that’s a good thing. It keeps you on your toes and stops you driving like a fool. Mind you, even if you are predisposed to moments of motoring madness, the Range Rover 3.0 TDV6 Vogue SE does its best to placate you. It brings out the gentleman in you and makes you feel good. Not superior – just good. But with every positive, there tends to be a negative. And in the Range Rover’s case it seems that unfortunate false impressions can quickly be born. For example, when parking at the beach with my family, a guy commented that it was “alright for some” to have enough money to buy such a car. And while wafting along the M1 in the fast lane I was greeted with a one finger salute. The fact that the possessor of the digit had been hogging the middle lane for the last five miles didn’t seem to matter to him. I don’t get those kind of reactions when driving smaller test cars, so the Range Rover does seem to be the common denominator here. But, if there’s one thing I’ve learnt in life: you can’t control what other’s think. So it’s best to let them get on with it and enjoy what you’re doing. And when you’re driving a Range Rover, it’s hard to be anything other than happy. Inside, it’s tastefully minimalistic with all the key functions controlled through straightforward switchgear. Even the touchscreen infotainment system is clear and uncomplicated to use. Better still, the driving 26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

“The workmanship is of a very high standard, meaning the whole kit and caboodle looks and feels good enough to eat.” position is first-rate and offers a commanding view of the road. Quite frankly, cabins don’t get much more sumptuous than the Range Rover’s. The workmanship is of a very high standard, meaning the whole kit and caboodle looks and feels good enough to eat. From a handling perspective, the luxury Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), is astonishingly nimble for its size. It feels accurate and selfassured on the straights; but sophistication is the Range Rover’s most obvious characteristic. Particularly remarkable is the way the car insulates you from the world when you’re hustling. There’s barely any wind noise, and the erudite thrum of the V6 diesel

Price: £81,850 soothes, rather than irritates. The Range Rover is just as accomplished off-road, literally crushing any non-tarmac terrain under its huge wheels. And back on the blacktop, it only starts to tell you “enough is enough” when pushed hard around twisty ribbons of road. The large car expresses its distaste like a stallion. But rather than bucking and whinnying, it lurches and squeals. All versions, including this mid-spec Vogue SE, have all the equipment necessary for happy motoring, and the power unit under the bonnet is hooked up to computerised gadgetry to keep things shiny side up, whether on asphalt or over the rough stuff. Indeed, the car scored the full five-stars when tested by safety body, Euro NCAP. All things considered, the Range Rover is a wonderfully relaxed and utterly competent machine on and off-road. It’s even relatively economical with a V6 oil-burner under the bonnet. Just be aware of other motorists who may judge you due to their inverted badge snobbery. But that’s their problem, right?
