Welcome to the June issue One of my favourite things to do throughout Spring and Summer is to visit country fairs and shows. Luckily for me there are so many in the area that I’m never stuck for choice! This issue we preview Wrangle Show and all it has to offer. At events like this there is generally something for everyone to see or do and if the weather is particularly nice then so much the better. So if you hear about a show near to you or are out and about and happen to come across one then go and give them your support. Elsewhere in the issue we offer up some information about driving lessons. Can you remember your first lesson? And, for that matter, the first time you went out in your car on your own after you passed your test? It’s an exciting time when you can truly get your first taste of freedom. Choosing the right instructor can be crucial to your success and choosing the right car to drive once you no longer need them can be just as big a decision. And how times have changed – a quick poll around the office revealed our first cars to be several Rover Metros, a Ford Fiesta and a Ford Orion. My first car was a Renault 5!! We also continue our home improvement series and look at extending your home. It’s so hard to know how to make the most out of your space but designers are getting more and more savvy when it comes to space saving designs and every nook and cranny can now be occupied! So whether you are thinking about a porch at the front or a large two storey extension at the back the trick is using the experience of the professionals and budgeting carefully! Enjoy the issue!

DCI/Jet Tec General Manager Runs Virgin Money London Marathon for the NSPCC The Virgin Money London Marathon is the largest one-day fundraising event in the world, and one of the toughest running challenges in terms of endurance. The thought of running 26.2 miles would strike fear in the most athletic amongst us, but not for DCI’s General Manager, Tammy Studholme who ran the distance on Sunday (26th April 2015) in support of national children’s charity, the NSPCC. Colleagues, family and friends went along to support Tammy and encourage her all the way, and the NSPCC had cheer points along the route which was a real boost for all those running for the charity. Tammy’s supporters did comment that the atmosphere was electric with both nerves and excitement and the support generated by the general public attending the event was amazing; cheers of encouragement gave people a real boost. Tammy said: It was so great to see everyone there supporting me as it was an extremely difficult day. Under normal circumstances the marathon is challenging, but on the day of the event it was really tough. Every part of me hurts at the moment, but it was all worth it and I‘d like to do it again!

Your rubbish, your responsibility - Don’t risk a big fine Did you know that your rubbish remains your responsibility even if you have employed someone to take it away for you? If the man with a van you have paid to take your rubbish away dumps it in a field, on a roadside verge, down a lonely lane or anywhere that’s not appropriate you will still be liable. And that liability, when things go wrong, could cost you up to £50,000! Fly tipping is seen as a serious offence. (blue wheelie bin) and garden waste (brown bin, if you have one. If you want one it’s £25 and then the collections are free. To order one go to www.boston.gov.uk/brownbin). Most other items off waste can be disposed of, for free, at the household waste recycling centre (the tip) at Slippery Gowt, if you have transport. Bulky items – an old three-piece suite, fridge freezer) will be collected from your address by the borough council for a small charge – go to www.boston.gov.uk/bulky. If you need to contract someone to take your rubbish away you need to check

they are properly authorised – ask to see their waste carriers’ licence. Waste carriers have to be licensed by the Environment Agency. To check if someone is a registered waste carrier, people should ask for their waste carrier number. Contact the Environment Agency on 03708 506506 and ask for a waste carrier validation check. If a contractor is not registered, their services should be refused and a request made that they seek advice from the Environment Agency. Maximum penalties for fly tipping are a £50,000 fine and five years’ imprisonment.

Rolec Opens World Class Academy While Doubling Size Of Factory and Warehouse An award winning business based in Frampton has completed the latest phase of a £3.2million project to transform a former derelict and unused site in the village into a globalleading manufacturing hub. Rolec Services, widely recognised as one of the world’s leading specialists in the design, manufacture and installation of electrical connection, hook-up and charging utility pedestals, undertook a £2million renovation of the former Food Connect site in Ralphs Lane in 2011. This included expanding the site in 2012 to encompass a large plot of land adjacent to the premises. Now Rolec has spent a further £1.2million on doubling the size of its factory, warehouse and office facilities – and incorporating a training academy to enable people from around the UK to train and familiarise themselves with the company’s extensive product range. Managing Director of Rolec, Kieron Alsop, commented: “We moved to the Boston area from Wisbech four years ago because we needed a bigger site as a result of the massive global demand for our manufactured goods. “This widespread acknowledgement of Rolec as a world leader in various industries also resulted in the requirement of a new academy, which formed part of our 5-year business plan, to be used by other businesses around the world to train their staff in Rolec’s products.” Rolec’s products are supplied and sold in over 40 countries and include many prestigious clients, including the Emir of Qatar and the world famous Pearl and Palm marinas in the Middle East. The company currently employs over 80 staff and was recently voted both Manufacturer of the Year and Business of the Year at the recent Boston Business Awards.

Big Boston Clean-up

Boston’s getting cleaner – and that’s official. This year’s volunteers from the Big Boston Clean-up numbered as many as they have in previous years, but the amount of rubbish to be collected had reduced. Jen Moore, Boston Borough Council’s partnerships and sustainability officer and organiser of the Big Boston Clean-up, said: “Last year we collected around six tonnes of rubbish from the streets, gutters, verges, grassed areas and riverbanks. But this year, with just as many volunteers, and better weather, it is down to four-and-a-half tonnes. I think the message is getting out and Boston really is becoming cleaner and tidier.” Over four days volunteers joined council staff and staff from partner agencies and businesses in the town and members of the public to work in teams cleaning their

way through zoned areas armed with high-visibility vests, gloves, mechanical litter pickers and black refuse sacks. This is the eighth year that the clean-up has been held and is in addition to the daily efforts of the council’s streetcleaning team and all-year round volunteer litter pickers. The Big Schools Clean-up also took place again this year. Almost 500 children from Boston West, Park Academy, Swineshead Primary, St Nicholas Primary, Hawthorn Tree, Fishtoft, Carlton Road Academy, Wrangle Primary, Pioneers Free School, St Mary’s RC Primary and Wyberton Primary schools cleared litter from in and around their school grounds. Fostering ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN adly, not every child has the best start in life. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t get better. And you can be a part of it. Fostering is substitute care in a family setting for a child or children who are unable to live with their birth family. There is no set time frame for fostering, it could be very short term or longer periods if it is decided that a child cannot be placed back with their own birth family. If you think that you would like to help but feel you don’t fit the right criteria then it would be helpful to put those feelings to one side as there not as many barriers are you might think. Are you renting a property? No problem - you just need to have a spare bedroom for a foster child to use. Perhaps you are a single male wanting to foster? Lincolnshire County Council welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or marital status. Are you on a low income or receiving benefits? This is also not a barrier to becoming a foster carer. Whilst you would not be a legal parent or guardian you will step into a role which charges you with ensuring the child is well cared for so you will have to keep health appointments, attend meetings about your childs care and pay attention to their educational needs. You will have a support network around you which will include social workers, health professionals and Lincolnshire’s Child Services. But most of all you need to be understanding and ready for a challenging time as children can arrive feeling confused, upset or angry. If you are prepared to put the time and effort in then you really can make a difference to a child’s life and you are just what the service is looking for. How the European Union is helping the fight against Crime new EU wide database has recently come into operation in the UK which will provide the Police and other Law Enforcement agencies alerts on those wanted for arrest, suspected terrorists, missing people, and stolen or missing property from all across Europe. The Schengen Information System (SIS) was created to protect the security of the member states and prevent criminal activity. The purpose of the SIS is to guarantee public order, security and free movement of people in the Schengen Area. It makes it possible for the police and customs officers in the Schengen countries to quickly exchange information. What this means practically is that an officer in Boston could be dealing with an individual in the town and run their details through our Police National Computer and find that they are wanted for a serious offence elsewhere in Europe. The officer will then arrest this person who will be later extradited form the country. This new system will make it harder for criminals to steal high value vehicles and plant equipment in this country to ship out abroad as Foreign Police forces are now able to easily check if this property has been stolen. The benefits of this system are potentially huge in the fight against crime and could really make a real difference which only time will tell.

What are the reasons for issuing an alert? In essence, the relevant national authority in one country may issue an ‘alert’ which describes the person or object being sought. Reasons for issuing an alert are: • To refuse entry to persons who do not have the right to enter or stay in Schengen territory. • To find and detain a person for whom a European Arrest Warrant has been issued. • To assist in locating individuals or objects as requested by judicial or law enforcement authorities. • To find and protect a missing person. • To find stolen or lost property. 8 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Universal Credit – Will it affect you? ❱ BY STUART HELLON niversal Credit (UC) has been slowly introduced in limited areas of the country since April 2013. On 13th April 2015 UC was introduced to the Boston area for new, single claimants only. UC is a means-tested benefit, which means that the amount you get will depend on how much income and savings you have. It will replace many existing means tested benefits. It is hoped that this will reduce the complexity of the benefit system and speed up the application process for claimants. The benefits being replaced by UC are: • • • • • • • Income Support Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance Income-related Employment Support Allowance Child Tax Credit Working Tax Credit Housing Benefit Budgeting loans (will be replace by an advance payment of UC)

Your bank account details Details of any savings Salary or other income

left with a gap in your income whilst you are waiting for your first months’ pay. In order to qualify for UC you must meet the following criteria: • • You need to live in an area where UC has been introduced. You need to be aged 18 or over (16 and 17 year olds are eligible in limited circumstances). You are below Pension Credit age. You must live in the UK and meet certain residence requirements. You must not be in education (although there are some exceptions to this) Your income and savings must be low enough You must have accepted a claimant commitment

UC will NOT affect those who are already in receipt of the above benefits yet. UC is a benefit for people of working age which means that you have to be under pension credit age to apply (see www.gov.uk for more info). You can apply for UC whether you are working or not. Many of us will be worrying about the effect that UC will have on our benefits and if our benefits will stop during a lengthy application process. However, this is simply not the case. One of the main advantages of UC is that if you are unemployed and then find work, your UC will not stop (as in the case of JSA). UC will simply reduce as your income increases. This means that you will not be

How to make a claim There are two stages to making a new UC claim. Firstly, you need to complete the online claim form which is available on www.gov.uk/universalcredit. The claim needs to be completed in one sitting so you need to make sure that you have the following information to hand when you begin the application: • • • • • • National insurance number Email address Phone number Your address Your landlords address How much rent you are paying

If you have any problems whilst making the claim, you can contact the UC helpline whilst you are online and someone will talk you through the application (0345 600 0723). If you don’t have access to the internet, you should be able to use the computers at your local Jobcentre. Alternatively, you can visit us at the bureau and we can assist you with the completion of the form. After submitting the online claim, you will be contacted by Jobcentre Plus who will arrange an interview and tell you what you need to bring with you. At the interview you will be asked to agree to a claimant commitment. This is a document that says what you will have to do to prepare for work, find work, get better paid work or work more hours. If you require any information about UC or help in applying, please visit us at the bureau for a short initial assessment. The bureau is open for assessments on Monday (morning), Wednesday (all day) and Thursday (morning). What’s happening at Boston Library? Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb This latest instalment of the popular ‘Night at the Museum’ series sees the gang reunite for one final time to uncover another museum mystery. To find out why the museum’s exhibits are acting oddly (even more than usual!) they make the trip to London and the British Museum and meet some new friends along the way. There are laugh-out-loud moments but be prepared to get choked up at the end for what were to be family favourite Robin Williams’ final ever scenes. Boston Library receives all brand new DVDs a couple of days after release. Brand new DVDs are charged at £2 for two night’s rental, with older Adult DVDs charged at £1 for a week and Children’s DVDs at 50p for a week.

What’s On Story Time is now every Friday at Boston Library, running from 2pm-2.30pm. Preschoolers and their grown-ups can join us for stories, rhyme time and sometimes craft activities for extra fun. One in 20 people at any one time in Britain are having thoughts of suicide and Lincolnshire figures have been higher than the national average. As ASIST Lead for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Rita Blackler is determined to help save lives... “We want to spread increased suicide awareness throughout the county, particularly in areas where there has been a high suicide rate. As a county we are working really hard with lots of organisations coming together to bring the suicide figures for Lincolnshire right down. People are often frightened to ask if someone is having thoughts of suicide as they fear they won’t know how to help if the answer is “Yes!” The majority of people who take their own lives don’t actually want to die they just want to be free of the pain and situation they are in. The more we talk about suicide, the more we can affect change. If the stigma and the taboo can be reduced, people at risk will hopefully talk to someone about their feelings and will find reasons to stay alive. There is often a lot of shame and guilt

attached to suicide because people feel they could or should have spotted the signs and done something to help, especially when it’s someone close to them”. Fishtoft Academy Over the last year at Fishtoft there have been exciting times and strange goings on! The year began with excitement in the playground, early one Monday morning, which alerted the staff, parents and children to an unusual discovery. There in the bike shed, preventing any one from placing their bike, lay a giant nest. In the nest? A giant egg! The children had to enlist the help of a range of professionals to discover what this egg was and how it arrived there. Later in the spring term, tangled in the tree was a parachute. Attached to the parachute? A mysterious canister! Inside the canister was an old, well-used map and a computer memory stick. A memory stick which contained clues and a mapwhere ‘x’ marked the spot. Unbeknown to the children, Trapped in a tower, in unknown territory, a scientist was making a desperate plea for help! Quite how long the scientist had been trapped for remains unsolved, along with where in the world this tower existed. However, what is known is that the children at Fishtoft were great detectives, scientists and technicians. With the help of their teachers and visitors from the Grammar School, they cracked codes, solved problems, designed and created a range of gadgets to release the captive in the tower. In addition to these mysterious events the children, parents and governors have been very busy holding a range of events to raise money for worthy charities. MacMillan, Children In Need and Comic Relief are but a few. As well as raising money for charity, the children are joining forces with ‘Tiny Tots’ nursery to raise funds for reading and playtime projects by holding a summer fete before August.

Boston College Among the hairspray and make up, leaves and feathers were also in full use as Hair and Beauty students let their imaginations run wild at their annual Hair and Beauty Showcase held at the College’s Sam Newsom Music Centre last Wednesday evening. Hair and Beauty students across all levels from both Boston College including

the Spalding campus came together to share their skills and demonstrate their expertise to their families, employers and members of the public. This year’s themes were ‘Vintage’ for Level 1, ‘Seasons’ and ‘Hollywood Glamour’ for Level 2 and ‘Avant Garde’ for Level 3, from which students took their own interpretations. As well as highlighting the amazing talent at Boston College, the hair and beauty department also used the event to

present their Apprentice of year awards. With awards going to Holly Raggo and Greg Dickenson, for their exceptional commitment and hard work in their apprenticeships. Enjoying Summer Barbecuing Our handy how-to guide to barbecuing f you don’t already own a barbecue then now is the time to go out and buy one for when the weather really starts to warm up and barbecue season gets into full swing. When buying your barbecue your first question is likely to be gas or charcoal? With this it really is a matter of personal preference. Following this comes the question of cost and finally the size. Many people enjoy cooking with charcoal. It is easy to light and it burns cleanly. The downside is that charcoal takes a while to get to the required heat to cook so you need to allow plenty of time between lighting the barbecue and putting food onto the grill. That said, food cooked this way gives a classic barbecue taste. In terms of ease a gas barbecue fits the bill. Generally, once lit you can put food on within a few minutes. Also some gas barbecues are fitted with gas burners and warming racks which can free up precious space on your grill!! You can also really go to town with a gas barbecue size-wise, owning something resembling an outdoor kitchen if

you so desire. A disposable barbecue starts at £2 - £3, charcoal barbecues from around £10 and gas barbecues start at around £50 however the sky is the limit and there are models with extras such as rotisseries which run into thousands of pounds. Whichever you choose you will also need to buy your accessories. Barbecue tools (tongs, skewers etc), mitts and basting and marinading utensils. Once you have your barbecue lit and ready to cook you need to make sure you cook safely to ensure you do not end up with food poisoning. Remember to keep food cool – salads, dips, cooked rice and cream for desserts should be kept refrigerated until needed.

Here are some hints and tips from the NHS Livewell website: • Ensure the barbecue is su ciently hot. For coal barbecues make sure the coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface. • Thoroughly thaw frozen meat before cooking. • Turn meat regularly and move it around the barbecue to cook it evenly. • Most meats (apart from steak) are only safe when piping hot in the centre, no pink meat is visible and any juices are clear. If in doubt, cut the meat at the thickest part to check. • Germs from raw meat can get onto your hands and transfer to cooked meat which can result in food poisoning. This is called cross contamination and there are things you can do to safeguard yourself against it: • Always wash your hands after touching raw meat. • Use separate utensils for raw and uncooked meat. • Never put cooked meat on a surface which has had raw meat on it. • Keep raw meat in a sealed container away from ready to eat foods such as bread rolls and salad. • Never wash raw chicken as it can spread Campylobacter bacteria. • Don’t put raw meat next to cooked meat on the barbecue.

Choosing a Driving Instructor You’ve got your provisional license and are raring to go. Choosing the right driving instructor is an important decision so make sure you choose wisely

he average cost of a driving lesson is £24, so you need to be sure that your money is being put to good use. People have different criteria when looking for a good match for them so it is important to do your research and, more importantly, have a good conversation with a potential instructor before you book a lesson. Start by calling an instructor and having an initial conversation. First and foremost, make sure they cover your area (especially if you use a national driving school) and parts of the route which will be on your test. If you are at college or sixth form are they able to pick you up from there for lessons? Staying local really is your best bet as you will have some familiarity with the roads. Speak to the instructor about their qualifications. To charge you money they must be ADI approved. To gain this qualification an instructor will have had an enhanced security check as well as a theory test, a driving ability and fitness test and assessment of their ability to instruct learner drivers. Having an ADI approved instructor gives you the confidence that your instructor is well trained and able to get you through your test. You can also ask about how long they have been an instructor and also what their success rates are like.

Ask about cost and what you get for that money such as how long a lesson lasts. Find out if there are any discounts available for booking several lessons in one go or for a first lesson. Ask about how many lessons on average a learner driver needs before they are ready for their test to help you budget properly (remember that this is just an estimate, however, everyone is different!). It might also be a good idea to ask about the car you will learn to drive in as different instructors will have different cars. Ask about the way a typical lesson is structured, that is, find out what you’ll be doing with your hour! You can also think forward to when you have passed your test – some instructors run courses for newly qualified drivers. As well as giving you confidence on the road you will be able to have the guidance of your instructor in areas you previously would not have covered such as motorway driving. Finally, remember that it really is a personal preference. Once you’ve had a conversation with a couple of driving schools you might start to get a feel for the one which is the best fit for you. From there, it’s time to book the first lesson and take the plunge – the business of buying your own car and sorting tax and insurance can wait until another day!

How about a new Summer ‘do? Summer is the perfect time to pay a visit to the hairdresser and change your look for the warmer months

We tend to go out and socialise more in Summer so if you tend to put your hair up and out of the way every day or have had the same style for a while then maybe it is time to head to the hairdresser and get yourself a brand new summer look. If you are nervous about going for a completely new style then think subtle – something like an ombre through the ends can change your look, even though it is only a little lighter than your natural shade. Having some layers put through long hair can give it some real volume or getting a fringe cut in can transform your face. Take the time to discuss with your hairdresser your current hair regime – do you love to style your hair or do you have very little time to spend on it? Do you love your colour or would you like to try something new? When it comes to colour your stylist will know best. How well your hair will do with colour relies on several different things. The general condition of your hair will dictate how well it holds on to the colour. If you are looking at blonde colours then the shade of colour you can go will be determined by the amount of bleach your hair can cope with. If you opt for reds, you may find yourself having to take more regular trips to the hairdresser to get the colour topped up. And with dark colours take your skin tone into consideration. With all of these variables it really is the best idea to leave it to the experts as, let’s be honest, getting it wrong and having to leave the house with green hair is nobody’s idea of fun! You hairdresser will be up to date with the latest hair trends and will be able to recommend products to help you achieve your best look. While in the salon, if you are heading off on a

beach holiday then it is a good idea to talk about how to protect your hair and colour while you are away. Swimming in the pool and lounging on the beach in the sun can affect your hair. f you like your country shows then you have Wrangle to thank. The Wrangle show is the original Lincolnshire show and was held in the field opposite where it is held today. In its heyday it attracted thousands of people to the village. It began in the late 1800s and looked a little different to how it does today, as it comprised ploughing matches and also a week-long plough show. During the Victorian times the show took a break and before World War One the people of Wrangle raised money for the show by singing songs and acting out sketches. There was another break because of World War Two. The present form of the show has been running almost continuously since 1978, with one break in 2001 because of the Foot and Mouth outbreak in which a fete was held instead in the grounds of the Parish Hall. Since then the show has had its run of the great British weather with both good and bad days, but these were all overshadowed by the 2010 show which is said to have been the ‘biggest and best yet.’ This year’s show is on July 5, beginning at 10am. The Main Arena will be home to school sports, the Emma Wright School of Dance, North East Lincolnshire Pipe Band, Ridgeside Lurcher displays, the Galloping Acrobats and Ferret World, among other acts. The marquee stage will also host organ music, singing and magic displays. There is a Flower and Vegetable show in the Wrangle Show Marquee. The closing date for entries is Monday 29th June and entry is 30p per exhibit (20p

This year’s sections are Vegetables, Fruit, Floral Art, Flowers, Roses, House Plants, Senior Citizens, Wrangle Amateur Gardeners, Handicrafts, Cookery, Photography, Eggs and Children. Details of what the judges are looking for can be found on the website, www.wrangleshow.co.uk There will also be a Companion Dog Show which will be held under Kennel Club regulations and will be judged by Dave Morrant. Entries to be registered at 11am on show day come early to avoid disappointment. Judging will start at 12 noon. There are rosettes for 1st to 4th place. Puppies under 6 months are not eligible. Judging will take place for Best in Show, Reserve Best in show and Best puppy in show. Novelty classes: Pretty bitch, handsome dog, best legs, best rescue, cutest couple (child 10 years or under on 5th July, 2015), child handler (child 11-16 years on 5th July, 2015), waggiest tail, most appealing eyes, best veteran (dog over 7 years), best crossbreed and judge’s favourite. On top of all this there will be heavy horses, vintage tractors and veteran cycles, chidren’s rides and entertainment, circus skills and stilt walking, Leverton firefighters, a chainsaw man and a Battle of Britain flypast. There is also plenty to eat and drink with a beer tent and a Young Farmers barbecue.

Extend Your Home Using the right people is key to a beautiful, hassle free extension here are many reasons for putting an extension on your home. Generally it’s because people want more space. It may be that it’s easier and cheaper than moving to a larger house. It may also be done strategically to add extra value to the property for the future. In this case it’s almost always extra bathrooms and larger kitchens! If you are new to large house projects then it’s not a good idea to try and take everything on yourself. Begin with an architect. An architect can be as involved or not as you require. They can manage the entire building process or simply draw your designs and have no further input. They can also help with planning consent, building regulation certification, recommending a builder, monitoring progress, standards and safety on site, arranging input from specialists where required and overseeing construction to completion. When speaking to an architect take a look at their portfolio and see if they have been involved in any projects similar to yours. Take the time to ask any questions. Make sure that they understand exactly what you want to achieve and make sure you discuss your budget otherwise it makes planning difficult. As a guide, allow £100 - £200 per square foot of development. The quality of fixtures and fittings will determine whether the cost is at the higher or lower end of the band. Whatever you plan always allow a contingency budget for any

unforeseen problems which may crop up. As a rule of thumb 10% should cover it. Once you have decided on your architect they will come over and take measurements of your existing property and then go away and prepare your plans. The next thing likely to come up, dependent on the type of alterations you are looking to make, is planning permission. When looking for the right builder there are several things you can do to make sure you hire the right person. First and foremost speak to friends and relatives about who they have used in the past as personal recommendation is always a good starting point. When you meet them make sure their areas of expertise match the project you are putting forward. Ask about their experience in building projects similar to yours and ask for references and referrals. Any good builder will happily answer these questions for you and be able to point you towards previous customers who you can speak to. Also, look for signs of quality from the builder themselves. How in-depth are they when discussing your project? What building products do they use? How well do they answer any questions and concerns you may have about the job? Once you are happy that you have found the right people for the job then it’s time to take the plunge and begin the process of adding your extension.

According to the government website www.planningportal.gov.uk an extension or addition to your house is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions: • • • • • • • No more than half the area of land around the “original house” would be covered by additions or other buildings. No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. In addition, outside Article 2(3) designated land and Sites of Special Scientific Interest the limit is increased to 6m if an attached house and 8m if a detached house until 30 May 2019. These increased limits (between 3m and 6m and between 4m and 8m respectively) are subject to the prior notification of the proposal to the Local Planning Authority and the implementation of a neighbour consultation scheme. If objections are received, the proposal might not be allowed. Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres. • • • • • • • • • • • • Extensions of more than one storey must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres. Maximum eaves height of an extension within two metres of the boundary of three metres. Maximum eaves and ridge height of extension no higher than existing house. Side extensions to be single storey with maximum height of four metres and width no more than half that of the original house. Two-storey extensions no closer than seven metres to rear boundary. Roof pitch of extensions higher than one storey to match existing house. Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house. No verandas, balconies or raised platforms. Upper-floor, side-facing windows to be obscure-glazed; any opening to be 1.7m above the floor. On designated land no permitted development for rear extensions of more than one storey. On designated land no cladding of the exterior. On designated land no side extensions.

Landscaping Your Garden The smallest of spaces can be transformed into a beautifully landscaped, functional garden he perfect garden can take on many different forms. For some, a large area for entertaining ticks all the boxes. For others attracting and supporting wildlife is the priority. Lawns, borders, hedges and fences add beauty, but in what proportion? And then there are the extras, like water features, gazebos and decking. Once you start, where do you stop! However beautiful your garden, it might be that it just doesn’t quite fit in with your lifestyle. Planning and landscaping can solve your problems. Begin by clearly defining what your garden needs in order to be functional for your particular lifestyle. Large patio spaces, play areas for children, room to grow vegetables? Begin by sketching out a few ideas. At this stage keep it informal and basic, looking at shapes and how they can work together. You don’t have to go right back to the beginning, if you have any features and plants that you enjoy then keep them in place or integrate them into the plans elsewhere within the garden. Take the sun and wind into account. These factors are especially important when planning a patio area. An area which sits in the shade all day is not suitable, nor is an area which is breezy. Keep an eye on where the sun is at different times of the day. Also consider the windows which look out onto the garden, have a look out of those and imagine your new garden from that perspective. Have a look at the soil quality in your garden before you plan your plants. Broadly speaking, soil can be clay, sandy, silty, peaty, chalky or loamy. Different plants enjoy different types of soil. For example, an Aster loves clay soil while Tulips will thrive in sandy soil. Make sure you have done your research before you plan your flower beds. Remember, if your soil doesn’t match up with your plans there is a lot of advice in gardening magazines and online as to how you can get around this. Similarly, if a vegetable garden is part of your plans then you will also need to allocate preparation time

to this as well. As important as soil quality is, light and shade also influence plants so this will also need to be taken into account. Also, when choosing your plants make sure you take into consideration how large they can potentially grow. Whilst they might be small and perfect for the spot you’ve chosen when you buy them, if they grow massively each year then they might not be appropriate! Once you’ve got a good idea going it’s time to put some more detailed plans together. At this stage, whilst your ideas may look visually stunning, consider how much time you will be able to dedicate to your garden. If you do not have much time for gardening then avoid high maintenance plants. Also, have a look at other gardens for inspiration, you may find something you never even considered ends up becoming a focal point! If you are not confident then you may wish to get a professional landscaper in to assist with your plans (and to actually implement them). In this way you will be able to use their wealth of experience to make sure you get it right first time.

of way. Touches like the wavy bonnet arches, in-yer-face front grille and glitzy daytime running lights give it a blend of angry, yet sophisticated. Infinity is the posh arm of Nissan – so luxury abounds, but what about practicality? Well, the Q70 Hybrid offers loads of headroom, and legroom is generous in the front. The rear is a different story. Three adults will fit, but legroom is limited. The boot isn’t amazing either. There is 350 litres of load space in the Hybrid due to the electrical gadgetry stuffed behind the rear seat. This means you’re not going to get much else in once your kid’s buggy or your set of golf clubs is in there. The rear seats don’t fold down either, limiting your options further. The cabin is awesome though. The rounded dashboard is distinct because it’s so curvy and boisterous. German interiors are more logically laid out, but the Infinity does make a refreshing change. Behind the wheel, the Q70 Hybrid’s 3.5 litre petrol-powered lump and extra electric motor means you’re in for a speedy drive.

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY his Infinity is no oil painting, but it’s not ugly either. The car is different, in a curvaceous sort Acceleration is creamy smooth, yet you feel pinned to your seat when the pedal is to the metal. Zero to 62mph takes only 5.3 seconds, and the top speed is 155mph. The Infinity glides along and almost does the driving for you. Its seven-speed gearbox is silky and flawless and, with the press of a button, you can kick the whole car into sport mode if you want even more athleticism. I did a Kettering to Lincoln 150mile return trip and honestly felt fresh and relaxed after mile munching up and down the A1. The car is also good at carving through the corners on rural routes, but its steering is a little light so it doesn’t always feel as planted as German rivals like BMW and Merc. The Q70 is safe, too. Six airbags, intelligent cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and lane departure prevention all help to instil a sense of confidence. The Q70’s electric motor is there to perk up performance economically, so an official figure of 45.6mpg and 145g/km of CO2 emissions is no surprise. The Infiniti will even stay in electric-only mode if you keep at around 20mph and you don’t bury your right foot into the carpet. What’s more, the car’s eco and normal driving modes simply relax the throttle response, helping you get a little bit more petrol for your pounds. Speaking of cash, you’re looking at forking out north of £40,000 for the Infiniti and over £47,000 for the Premium Tech trimmed Hybrid on test here, but you do get a lot of machine for your money. The car comes with a stack of kit on the inside and outside. Sat-Nav is standard, you get leather heated and ventilated seats, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights, and meaty 18 inch alloy wheels. On the whole, the Infiniti Q70 Hybrid is a quick, luxury saloon with an ability to deliver you to your destination effortlessly. It is a great company car choice because of its low emissions, but it’s not as badgecool as a BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi. That said; it’ll tell the world you’re a little different – and you’ll be able to find your motor in the sea of German executive saloons in your firm’s car park.
