New boats boost to get more people in Boston sailing Witham Sailing Club is looking forward to getting even more people afloat in Boston this year after a £10,000 Sport England grant helped the club buy new boats. The new boats were needed to meet increased demand for low cost sailing at the club following the successful introduction of a new Saturday Sailing initiative in 2013. Saturday Sailing was launched to offer local youngsters the chance to learn to sail and cater for new adult club members who wanted to improve their skills. But such has been the popularity of the sessions Witham is already looking at how it can get even more people sailing and sailing regularly over the next year. Dave Sauntson, Witham SC Development Officer, said: “This season we aim to build on what we’ve learned the past two years and the activities which have proved most popular. Most of all we want people to have fun. The latest addition to Witham’s training fleet is an RS Vision dinghy, funded through the Sport England Small Grants programme. This is a resilient family sailboat, which introduces
high performance elements of the sport including using a spinnaker and trapeze, where a sailor hangs off a wire over the side of a boat to make it go faster. Last year 260 sailing clubs and watersports centres in Britain hosted Push The Boat Out Open Days and have-a-go sessions, with 17,000 people getting a taste for the sport for the first time! To find out how you can get into sailing with Witham SC this year visit the club website at www.withamsailingclub.co.uk
Richard loses six stone in weight Anyone who struggles with their weight will tell you losing it is often not the hard part – keeping it off is. After working with Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) health trainers retired Royal Air Force man Richard Tory, 54, has finally found a way to do just that. Richard lost ten inches off his waistline and six stone in weight, taking himself out of the at-risk category for developing Type 2 Diabetes. And he is coming up to the one-year anniversary of achieving a new healthier weight. Richard, of the Staniland area of Boston, said: “I have always been on the larger side and, since my mid to late teens, have been on and off of various diets. It has been a constant fight to try to stop my weight getting out of control. In 2012, I was told my weight was putting me at risk of diabetes and initially I lost a bit, but by the summer 4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
of 2013, I was back up to 18 stone 4lb.” He began working with a health trainer at the end of 2013 and, crucially, was sent on a cooking course. Richard said: “Being able to see what food looks like in the various stages of preparation and having someone to put my ‘stupid’ questions to was so helpful. What did a cook really mean by ‘browning’ meat? It looked grey to me! Richard, who is a dedicated volunteer, filling his working week with roles at LCVS, Lincolnshire Credit Union, Boston and Fenside Community Centre, started walking everywhere instead of driving. Leaving home only ten or 15 minutes earlier, he finds he often arrives earlier than he would have in the car. The Health Trainer Service in Lincolnshire is an established and successful service, providing informal, confidential and free advice and support to people over
the age of 16 years.Health Trainers are based in local communities and work with individuals and groups. They appreciate how difficult it can be to make healthy changes and provide practical support and guidance to introduce new routines and activities, as well as sign-posting you to additional useful or specialist services. These may vary from local healthy walks, swimming, cooking courses, gentle seated exercise, dance classes or social groups to professional advice and other health services - plus many other options. Lincolnshire Sport announced as Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce’s Charity of the Year Lincolnshire Sport are delighted to have been announced as the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce’s Charity of the Year. With the British Cycling National Road Championships coming to Lincolnshire in June 2015, the Chamber felt that Lincolnshire Sport was an ideal choice for Charity of the Year as an integral non-profit organisation which delivers sport and health projects, events and activities to communities across the county. Simon Beardsley, Chief Executive at the Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, said: ‘We are delighted to be supporting Lincolnshire Sport. The Chamber is supportive of initiatives which enhance the wellbeing of people living in Lincolnshire such as this one. Lincolnshire Sport’s main aim is to increase participation in sport and physical activity across the county and in turn, these activities enrich the lives of local people and develop the skills of individuals.’ The Chamber introduced a Charity of the Year to ensure that fundraising events reap the best rewards for the chosen organisation. A whole host of events to raise funds for Lincolnshire Sport will take place throughout 2015, which will include an Annual Charity Banquet as well as a Golf Day, taking place in October. Janet Inman, Chief Executive at Lincolnshire Sport, added: “We are thrilled to have been chosen as the Lincolnshire
Chamber’s Charity of the Year and we are really looking forward to working together on a number of exciting projects throughout 2015. Sport and activity play an integral role in public health and we are delighted that the Chamber are supporting us and our partners in trying to make a real difference to the health and wellbeing of people in Lincolnshire.” SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Reading for 20 minutes at home
R
ecently I read a really interesting infographic on Facebook about reading with your children. It took, as an example, three children. One who reads for one minute a day, one who reads for five minutes a day and one who reads for twenty. On the face of it, each child is picking up a book and reading, so what’s the difference? It all comes down to the amount of words they are being exposed to over the course of the year and what it adds up to. The difference, it turns out, is astonishing. The child who reads for one minute a day will see 8000 words across that year. Add an extra four minutes a day and the child who reads for five will see an impressive 282,000 words a year. Up it again and the child who reads for twenty will see a staggering 1,800,000 words a year. There is an obvious knock on effect here connected with school performance. But all of this aside, there is a simple pleasure to be had in listening to your child read. Whether it is favourites from your childhood or discovering new favourites together, this really is quality time to be spent with your children. And let’s not forget that once you have listened to your child read it is your turn come bedtime where there’s even more fun to be had through your own storytelling skills. If you have a reluctant reader then perhaps start by thinking outside of the box. It’s not always a case of putting a book in front of your child. Reading can come from all over the place – comics, magazines and newspapers can all hold items of interest. The local library is also a fantastic resource and often run reading challenges and story times. So however you choose to do it, pick up a book. Your children will thank you…

Keep Safe from Doorstep Crime and Bogus Callers What is a doorstep crime? Doorstep crime is when someone comes to your door with the aim of scamming you out of your money. Or a fraudster may pose as an official in order to access your home and steal money and valuables. While there are many legitimate tradespeople and officials, it’s wise to be on your guard when you answer your door. Doorstep scammers can be pushy and persuasive and it can be easy to fall victim. You don’t have to let any stranger into your home. Dial 999 if you’re suspicious or the caller won’t leave. Call the police nonemergency number 101 if you’re not in immediate danger but want to report an incident. What types of doorstep criminals are there? There are two main types: Bogus callers try to get into your home or obtain personal details by pretending to be someone they’re not, including council staff, charity collectors, meter readers and police officers. In reality, they are criminals trying to steal money and valuables. Rogue traders usually cold-call, claiming to be workers offering to sell services, makes repairs or carries out work on your house, garden or driveway. In reality they charge inflated prices for shoddy or unnecessary work.
How can I spot a Rogue Trader? • •
They may tell you the work is urgent and needs to be carried out immediately. They will normally ask for payment there and then and may offer to come to the bank with you if you don’t have the cash at hand.
How can I protect myself from doorstep crime? • • • • • 8 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
Don’t agree to sign a contract or hand over any money until you have talked to someone you trust. Never disclose your personal identification number (PIN) or let anyone persuade you to hand over your bank card or go to the bank to withdraw cash for a payment. Don’t be afraid to ask a salesperson to leave. If they refuse, call the police. Ask for their identity card and check it careful. Keep your utilities services phone numbers handy so you can easily call and check an official’s identity. Join your utilities company’s password scheme where you arrange a password with the company to check their representatives are genuine.

Advice
Your Money Your Choice ❱ BY STUART HELLON
O
n 6 April, the Government’s pension reforms will come into force giving people approaching retirement the freedom to choose how they will use their defined pension pots. To help people understand their options, the Government has introduced Pension Wise, which will give people free, impartial guidance either online, via telephone or face to face. Citizens Advice will be delivering face to face Pension Wise guidance, with 50 delivery centres across England and Wales working with over 500 sites to provide appointments. The delivery centres have been chosen to offer a geographical spread accessible to people approaching retirement. Boston Citizens Advice Bureau will not be delivering face to face guidance, but will help local people to access Pension Wise. People will be able to contact our bureau and we will work with them to see if they would benefit from online, telephone or face
to face guidance, and help them book an appointment with a Pension Wise adviser.
Who qualifies for a Pension Wise appointment? Pension Wise is relevant to people who: • Are approaching 55 or over. • Have a defined contribution pension pot(s). • Are thinking of accessing their pension pot(s) in the next six months. • Have not had a guidance appointment before
Pension Wise guidance is centrally funded by the Government. Our role in booking appointments is fully funded and will not affect the delivery of our usual advice services for all local people who need them. Citizens Advice are experts in helping people make sense of their circumstances, helping people with complex financial queries from debt issues to pension scams. More information on the reforms and guidance in general is available from www. pensionwise.gov.uk or by calling Adviceline on 03444 994119.

Three dog night by Elsebeth Egholm Adult choice
For fans of Nordic Noir comes this grisly novel showcasing the dark underbelly of Danish Society. Divers are called in to trawl through the murky harbour waters in search for a missing local teenager, who never returned home from a New
Year’s Eve party. When the body of a young girl is found naked tied to an anchor with her face removed, it creates shockwaves throughout the small fishing port and as other bodies are found one resident exconvict Peter Boutrup who moved to this rural part of Denmark for peace and quiet, must accept that the truth about these events lies hidden in a past he’s been trying desperately to forget.

Itch – The Explosive Adventures of an Element Hunter is Mayo’s debut novel that follows the adventures of Itchingham Lofte, a teenage boy with a passion for chemistry and the periodic table. His explosive adventure begins when, in his quest to collect every element in the periodic table, he discovers a previously undiscovered rock that has scientists from around the world after him. This is a fast paced thrilling adventure, which keeps the reader guessing the outcome for Itch and his sidekicks, sister Chloe and cousin Jack. The book is just as thrilling for adults to read, I loved every minute of it and can’t wait to read the next in the series.

Bicker Preparatory School On Thursday 12th March, Mrs Elizabeth Hopkins, CEO from the Centrepoint Charity in Boston, came to speak to KS2 pupils about the charity’s work. The children asked many pertinent questions and Mrs Hopkins thoroughly enjoyed talking to them. Children learnt how the charity started in the Centenary Methodist Church in Boston to support the homeless, lonely and vulnerable. Over the years, the need for such support has grown and the charity opened their drop-in centre on Red Lion Street and later, their own charity shop. The children learnt how the charity can support people in need through the furniture recycling centre, the food bank, giving advice, a fresh set of clothes, offering the facilities of a shower, or a hot meal and so on. We also learnt how the local businesses, schools and the community of Boston help to support Centrepoint in many ways. Mrs Wendy Bell, Headteacher for Upper School, said “In our RE lessons, and in assemblies we will continue to think about, and pray for, charities who work tirelessly in our area to help those who are struggling in different ways”.
Boston Grammar School Students at Boston Grammar School have just returned from an exciting football tour of North Germany. Sixty-two players from four Boston Grammar School football squads travelled by coach to Dortmund where previous European and Bundesliga Champions Borussia Dortmund hosted them at their stadium. had daily training sessions with Borussia Dortmund’s training team before playing in two tournaments. The host club showed the students how they played when they faced FC Koln in a thrilling 0-0 draw at the Signa Iduna Park. The students were also treated to a live match at the Bay Arena to watch Bayer Leverkusen thrash VFB Stuttgart by four goals to nil. The tour lasted for six days: 12th – 18th March 2015.

Boston’s May Fair
Boston’s May Fair Boston’s May Fair was established by Henry VIII in his Charter to the town
Saturday 2nd: 11.00am – 11.00pm Sunday 3rd: 1.00pm – 9.00pm Monday 4th: 11.00am – 10.30pm *Tuesday 5th: 11.00am – 10.30pm *Wednesday 6th: 11.00am – 10.30pm *Thursday 7th: 11.00am – 10.30pm *Friday 8th: 11.00am – 10.30pm Saturday 9th: 11.00am – 11.00pm *Most of the attractions on these days open at 5.00pm, with some of the children’s rides and food concessions opening through-out the whole day.
T
he Fair proclamation and opening has remained traditional through the years and still follows the style established by the Henrecian Charter. Henrecian Charter: The alderman and common council to attend upon the mayor upon St. George’s Day and upon St. James’ Day (we now do this on the opening day of the Fair), accompanying him first to the cross (market) and thence to the beast (cattle) market until the proclamation be made, and thence to the Guildhall, there to remain until the court of pie powder (trading standards) be closed. Present Day: The Mayoral party, Boston Borough Council officer, members of the Church, Police representative proceed to the Market Place. The Church lead on a Fairground service, (approx 10 mins) and the Mayor reads the lesson. The May Fair proclamation then follows and is read by a Council Official. A call for three cheers for Her Majesty the Queen. The Mayor and Consort then proceed on a tour around the Fair, inclusive of Market Place, Wide Bargate and through to the Cattle Market.
The Boston Fair, originally a trading fair, was of international importance particularly with the regard of quality goods such as fine textiles from Florence, Mediterranean olives and spices, birds of prey, quality continental ceramics and Venetian glassware. It was much larger than the town’s regular markets which hosted more mundane agricultural and industrial products. Boston May Fair has now lost its trading element but is still going strong as the town’s traditional pleasure Fair. The whole of Boston’s town centre, the Market Place, Wide Bargate, the Cattle Market and the Green are taken over by rides, stalls and many other attractions. From the traditional galloping horses, hook a duck and side stalls to the more thrill seeking rides such as the waltzer’s, miami’s and superbowl’s. There are plenty of rides for the children to enjoy and of course the food stalls which offer a range of colourful and tasty treats, hotdogs and burgers, toffee apples and candy floss. The May Fair is the town’s biggest and most important event, rooted in history with a fun and magical present. This year the Fair opens on Saturday 2nd May to Saturday 9th May. The proclamation is on Saturday 2nd and people are invited to gather at the Galloping Horses at the top of the Market Place at 11.30am. 16 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

A Wright & Son
a
A Wright & Son are Lincolnshire’s premier butchers, based in the market town of Boston with over 100 years’ experience spanning 5 generations of the family
Wright & Son was founded in 1906 by Arthur Wright, the business was based at retail shop on Wide Bargate in Boston with an abattoir and preparation room in Field Street. The business then passed through the generations to Arthur’s son Albert, and his son George. George ran the business with his wife Theresa as it was, until they retired in 1985. At this point the day to day business was taken over by George & Theresa’s son David. The legislation relating to operating an abattoir was changing and a number of the local butchers who had their own small abattoirs were deciding to close this part of their business. David decided that the future of the family business was in the wholesale supply of meat to the butcher’s in the local area. The business continued to grow and in 1992 the abattoir in Field Street was too small to deal with the number of animals we were processing each week,

Food Safety Week
Food Safety Week 2015 The Chicken Challenge
As part of Food Safety Week the Food Standards Agency is asking people to take a pledge whereby you promise to: H Bag and store raw chicken separately from other food, and keep it covered at the bottom of the fridge H Wash everything that's touched raw chicken in soap and hot water - chopping board, utensils and hands H Not wash raw chicken, as it splashes germs H Check your chicken is cooked properly, no pink, steaming hot and the juices run clear
A
❱ BY THE FOOD STANDARDS AGENCY
s a nation, we love chicken – it brings us together around the table for Sunday lunch and around the barbecue on sunny afternoons. There's just one problem; raw chicken can spread campylobacter, a germ which causes more than 280,000 cases of serious food poisoning each year. The aim of Food Safety Week is to cut the number of cases of campylobacter poisoning in half by the end of this year. It's possible, if we all work together. You can do your bit by joining the Chicken Challenge, and showing the world your commitment to doing the little things that keep your loved ones safe. What is campylobacter? Campylobacter is the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK. You can’t see it, smell it or taste it but if it affects you, you won’t forget it. Campylobacter poisoning usually develops a few days after eating contaminated food and leads to symptoms that include abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea and, sometimes, vomiting. It can affect you forever, sparking off irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), reactive arthritis and, in rare cases, Guillain-Barré syndrome – a serious condition of the nervous system. At its worst, it can kill. If this year’s campaign is successful, it could mean that over a hundred thousand fewer people get sick next year and that's got to be good news! What is the rest of the food chain doing? The poultry industry has agreed a target with the FSA to reduce levels of campylobacter on chickens at
the end of the factory process by the end of 2015. If the industry meets this target, then this alone would give us the reduction that we are all looking for. It would be an amazing achievement, but we won’t be satisfied until this bug is no longer a public health problem – and that's why we are also looking for retailers to take action and for you to make sure you do the little things to keep your family safe. Find out more about how the industry is Acting on Campylobacter Together at food.gov.uk/actnow If you are planning to eat out, there is a way to check how well they are preparing their food. The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) can help you choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving you information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways, hotels, and other places you eat out. Supermarkets and other food shops are also included in the scheme. The scheme is run by local authorities in England, Northern Ireland and Wales and in partnership with the Food Standards Agency. Each business is given a ‘hygiene rating’ when it is inspected by a food safety officer from the business’s local authority. The hygiene rating shows how closely the business is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law. In England and Northern Ireland, when you eat out or shop for food, you might see a sticker in the window or on the door, showing you the hygiene rating for that business. Businesses are encouraged to display these stickers at their premises in a place where you can easily see them when you visit.
How can I avoid campylobacter poisoning? Follow the '4Cs' Cleaning before cooking, wash hands thoroughly with hot, soapy water wash dishcloths, tea towels, sponges and oven gloves regularly
Cross contamination keep work surfaces clean and tidy always use a chopping board and wash it in between preparing raw and cooked food
Chilling set your fridge to below 5°C and don't overfill it store raw meat and poultry at the bottom of the fridge and keep it covered
Cooking cook food until it's steaming hot in the middle SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

www.votematch.org As this issue is being delivered we will be just days away from the general election and, by all accounts, it’s going to be a close one. Because local (and some mayoral) elections are happening at the same time it’s likely you will have been bombarded with information – through the letterbox, on your TV and online. Despite this I have a few friends who are planning not to vote because “I don’t know what the parties stand for” or “They are all as bad as each other” or, the mindboggling, “none of their policies really apply to me”. I would urge everyone who is eligible to vote to get out there and do just that. If you are unsure who to vote for (and believe me, you are not alone) then take a little time to familiarise yourself with your candidates and their election promises. You won’t have to look too far as they are all putting their time and effort into trying to secure your vote at this very moment. If you’re really not sure where to start then I’d like to direct you to a website called www.votematch. org It’s a straightforward website which will ask you 20 questions about your beliefs on certain 26 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
topics before telling you which party you agree with the most and, therefore, might like to consider voting for. You are first asked to rate personal importance to the following topics: Economy, Education, Environment, Immigration, NHS & Health, Political Power, Security & Policing, Tax & Benefits and Trending Issues. Once you’ve put them into order it will provide you with statements and you can choose to agree, disagree, stay neutral or take a different stance. If you agree you are asked how important an issue it is to you. The entire process takes just a few minutes. At the end of the questionnaire you are asked to eliminate any parties that you definitely wouldn’t ask for before giving you your results. Put some thought into it and answer truthfully – you might surprise yourself with just which issues are important to you. When you get your result perhaps take that as your starting point to investigate a little further before your trip to the ballot box on May 7. But make sure you do go – your voice deserves to be heard.

Home Security
Protecting your home in Summer During the Summer months we tend to spend more time out of the house, even if it is only in the back garden. We look at how to protect your home while you are out ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
“Have you got unlocked gates? Low fences or hedges in front of your home? It’s perfect territory for a burglar to conceal themselves while they are trying to gain access to your property.”
W
e are all attached to our belongings. That’s why they are our belongings in the first place. And we’d very much like to keep it that way. Sadly burglaries do happen and often, the homeowner had made their home unintentionally attractive to a burglar. I once heard a fantastic piece of advice when it came to preventing burglary which was “don’t make your home the lowest hanging fruit”. In other words, you don’t have to make your home like Fort Knox but you need to do enough that it isn’t the most tempting home on the street. So what are the do’s and do not’s when it comes to protecting your home. Firstly, if you are security conscious consider how long it is since you put those systems into place. If you put the latest windows in with the best locks, but it was ten years ago, you might like to speak to a professional to see if it is time to upgrade as safety when it comes to windows is always being reviewed. Take a good, hard look at your windows. Statistically, around a third of burglars will enter a home in this way. For starters, don’t leave your windows open if you are out. It may be hot inside if you leave them closed but it will not be tempting for a burglar to have a go. Laminated glass is particularly difficult to break so if you have any windows that are out of the way which would present a good prospect to a burglar you might like to consider installing it. After windows comes doors. Whilst a third of burglars come in through a window the other two thirds will come in through the door. If you have glass in your door make sure you don’t leave your keys in the lock – for two reasons. Firstly the glass can be smashed and entry easily gained. Secondly, don’t put yourself in a position
whereby a burglar can enter through a window but leave quite easily through a door. A mortise deadlock will ensure a burglar can’t unlock the door simply by smashing their way in. If you have a professional round about your windows ask them to assess the doors and frames for their strength. Consider the exterior of your house. Have you got unlocked gates? Low fences or hedges in front of your home? It’s perfect territory for a burglar to conceal themselves while they are trying to gain access to your property. Also, if you haven’t already, install some outside lighting. Either a sensor light to attract immediate attention to the property or a constant low- level light which is on all night which deters burglars by maintaining light levels so they can easily be seen. And while we’re on the subject of outside be careful to secure your garage properly as not only does it house your car but often many tools that could help a burglar. Take extra care to secure your ladders! Finally, Burglar alarms. They really are self-explanatory as are their benefits. One piece of advice if you do own one is to get a generic alarm sticker rather than the branded one you will be provided with as it could give a savvy burglar information about how best to disable them. And don’t forget man’s best friend. A dog can be just as good a deterrent as an alarm. It doesn’t even have to be a big dog, in fact the yappier the better! So take your pick and ensure that your house doesn’t end up as the lowest hanging fruit. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Patios and Decking Relaxing in your garden in the evenings is one of the best parts of summer. If you are thinking about remodeling your garden which would suit you best - a patio or decking area?
"With patios your choice of paving is huge. As well as colour you can choose size, shape and even texture."
B
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
arbecuing, sunbathing or just plain relaxing, in summer you can end up spending as much time in your garden as you do indoors. But which will serve you better – a patio or decking? Both have their benefits as well as their downsides and, ultimately, it will come down to personal preference but as always it pays to do your homework to make sure you are making the right decision for you. The size and shape of your garden will play a part as well as the type of house you live in. It’s always best to start by having a look around – you’ll soon get a good feel for the types of materials you are drawn to and you can then use that information to make your decision. With patios your choice of paving is huge. As well as colour you can choose size, shape and even texture. You can use the colour of the bricks of your house to dictate colour or use it to make a dramatic statement. Neutral tones are always popular. Although trickier than decking to install, once the patio has been laid it will last for as long as you need it to. Looking after your patio is also easier than decking, with hosing down and sweeping with a stiff brush often being the only maintenance required. Decking is more contemporary and can be placed anywhere in your garden, it is not necessarily placed in the traditional position of immediately outside the house. So if a part of your garden is a sun-trap then that would be the obvious place to locate your decking. If you are not putting your decking at ground level then it will generally be easier to build than a patio. As decking is made of wood it can look a more natural addition to your garden, especially, for example, if it is at the bottom of your garden. Depending on the type of wood you choose it may also be cheaper to install than a patio. As with paving however, decking can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. Maintenance can be a big deal when it comes to decking. Decking needs regular attention to stop the wood from rotting or discolouring and regular oiling to keep it in top condition. If you have decking immediately outside your house bear in mind that it can become slippery when wet so you will need to be careful, especially during the winter months. Both patios and decking can be laid as a DIY project but is not an easy job and there’s quite a bit of manpower involved. If you do choose not to involve the professionals then make sure you plan properly beforehand exactly where it is to go, how many paving stones or deck boards you need and, most importantly, what you will need to do in terms of preparation of the ground before any work even begins. ❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY
he new SEAT Leon X-PERIENCE, with permanent fourwheel drive and all-road equipment, offers driving fun wherever you go. Sharp lines provide the estate with an appearance of energy and vitality. The silhouette is long and graceful, yet the car offers the full spectrum of usability for work and leisure, family and sport. The Leon X-PERIENCE is offered with 2.0 TDI 150PS and 184PS outputs. The higher powered 184PS (181bhp) SE Technology DSG, reviewed here, is hooked up to a direct shift gearbox (DSG) transmission as standard. This offers seamless shifting of the gears without a conventional clutch pedal and with full automatic or semimanual control. The range-topping estate is immediately recognisable through protection mouldings on the door sills and wheel arches, to give it a robust character, plus aluminiumlook touches for the rear bumper and lower front spoiler. Behind the wheel, the SEAT delivers dynamism that is only partially conveyed by its acceleration time of 7.1 seconds from 0-62mph, and its top speed of 139mph. The
32 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
engine declares its efficiency with a combined fuel consumption figure of 55.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 133 grams per kilometre. The X-PERIENCE also offers safety in all situations, thanks to its superb traction, excellent brakes and integrated assistance systems. Certainly, my jaunt across the Forest of Dean’s muddy trails demonstrated the effectiveness of the car’s permanent all-wheel drive and extra ground clearance. The balanced running gear reinforces the character of the new Leon ST. The springs master all surface irregularities, while the steering delivers refined directionality, as well as excellent feedback. The reason the permanent all-wheel drive system in the X-PERIENCE is so competent is because it’s among the most modern and efficient of its kind in the world. In normal operation, most of the engine power goes to the front wheels, but should their traction decrease, torque is diverted smoothly and in a matter of a few milliseconds to the rear, resulting in maximum grip. On road, the car is punchy and smooth. SEAT’s Drive Profile switch enables you to vary the
characteristics of the power steering, throttle control and the DSG transmission in three modes – eco, comfort and sport. There’s also an individual setting to give you as much or as little grunt as you want. In addition, the SEAT Drive Profile incorporates a sound actuator close to the engine to provide an even more refined engine tone. The rugged Leon’s individual interior offers an added dimension of driving entertainment too. Indeed, quality cabin materials, attention to detail and a combination of strong colours give this car bags of personality. It’s just a shame the centre console isn’t padded around knee height, but this is a small matter. The X-PERIENCE logo adorns the door sills and steering wheel, while orange stitching accentuates the adventurous spirit and youthfulness of this car, which can be both serious and fun. What’s more, the luggage compartment offers a carrying capacity of 587 litres, which extends to 1,470 litres with the rear-seats folded down. So, if you want a four-wheel-drive family vehicle which is as much at home on gravel and snow as it is on tarmac, then the Leon ST X-PERIENCE could be for you. The car is priced from £24,385 to £28,870.
