Welcome to the May issue What a difference a year makes, this time last year I was preparing to go off on maternity leave and now I no longer have a baby but a toddler approaching one. People warned me time flies and it certainly has over the last 12 months. April has been such a mix up of weather, beautiful sunshine filled days where we have been out in the garden to cold evenings with the fire on whilst the rain lashes down outside. Hopefully you have noticed we have had a re-design of the magazine and as part of this I would like to welcome our new columnist TV’s Martin Lewis, who will be giving you top tips each month on all things money. In this issue we are discussing the importance of supporting our local markets - these independent traders are an integral part of our towns and villages but if we do not spend our money there they will disappear. We have some yummy recipes to share with you, I am definitely a big fan of the coconut and lemon slices - I have probably had one or two more than I should this month! Elsewhere Tim, our motoring expert puts the new Mercedes-Benz GLE through its paces. See how it performs on P26. Finally make sure you check out our competition to be in with a chance to win a break for two at Ragdale Hall. Have a good month!

NEWS Want to find arts or heritage activity, venues, organisations or professionals? A new website has just gone live for South Lincolnshire which allows users to search for any kind of arts or heritage activity they’re interested in – be it arts classes, a voluntary arts group, an artist or professional they might want to commission to do some work – or just to see what venues we have in South Lincolnshire. The website has been funded by Transported, the Arts Council England funded organisation aiming to raise levels of engagement with the arts in Boston Borough and South Holland. It’s supported by South Holland District Council and Blackfriars Theatre, Boston. Melissa Poulson from Transported said: “Having an online resource means that it will hopefully never go out of date and anyone can submit a new listing at any time – so we hope that the website will continue to evolve as an ongoing resource in the coming years so that it is an accurate reflection of how many fantastic arts and heritage opportunities are available in South Lincolnshire.” Anyone who wishes to be listed on the website just needs to visit www.southlincsartsdirectory.co.uk/ get-listed to fill out a short form, so if you’re an arts group, a venue, an organisation or an artist or arts/ heritage professional and you live or work in South Lincolnshire, the South Lincs Arts Directory wants to hear from you! The website is live at www.southlincsartsdirectory.co.uk.

Blue Street official opening A new development of affordable homes has been officially opened on Blue Street in Boston on the site of the former Pilgrim Foods depot. The 41 new homes have been designed to have garages rather than living accommodation on the ground floor, to mitigate flood risk. The £5 million development was built by Waterloo Housing Group in partnership with Boston Borough Council and local construction company D Brown Building Contractors Ltd.

Lucy said: “We have no worry of the river coming in here if there should be another flood.” The new housing attracted Government grant support of £1million from the Homes and Communities Agency and comprises 33 homes for rent and a further eight to part buy, part rent through shared ownership. The homes offer a new chance for some residents who fell victim to flooding in their previous homes and had to move out due to the tidal surge of 2013, such as Billy and Lucy Green. Billy said: “We had four feet of water in our old home at Bath Gardens during the flood and lost everything on the ground floor. We spent a month in a Premier Inn over Christmas with our two young sons.” Lucy said: “We have no worry of the river coming in here if there should be another flood.” Councillor Peter Bedford, Leader of Boston Borough Council, officially opened the development, and said: “Boston Borough Council has been working for years to help enable housing providers to bring a supply of affordable homes to the market, and it is pleasing to see all that hard work beginning to pay off. “Waterloo Housing Group has been a great partner to work with after the council pump primed this scheme. This has been partnership working as it should work and we have used New Homes Bonus money from the Government for what it has been designed for.” A further 13 affordable homes have been built at Brothertoft Road by Waterloo, which is to deliver 48 homes at Broadfield Lane, Boston, in 2016/17, followed by 75 more in a second phase in Broadfield Lane in 2017/18. It also has plans for 32

properties in Toot Lane in 2017/18. Other affordable home schemes are being developed in Swineshead, Tytton Lane, Wyberton, and Old Leake. Cllr Bedford added: “More than 300 new, affordable homes will be delivered through our partnership with Waterloo and a funding mix from the council, Waterloo, the Homes and Communities Agency and the Greater Lincolnshire Local Economic Partnership Housing Unlocking Fund; that means more than £25 million invested in homes for people in need over five years and that’s no mean feat.” Anthony Riley, group director of development and operations at Waterloo Housing Group said before the new development the area looked like “an absolute bomb site” and unlikely to be tackled by any private developer without intervention by Boston Borough Council and the Homes and Communities Agency. He said: “The completion of this development marks a new beginning for the local families now living here and demonstrates our commitment to working in partnership with Boston Borough Council to provide affordable housing for those who need it.” The Blue Street scheme is on the former Pilgrim Foods depot. The development cost just over £5 million and received investment support of £157,000 from Boston Borough Council and £1million from the Homes and Communities Agency. As part of the ceremony, residents, councilors and partners gathered to see a commemorative plaque unveiled on a bench in the children’s play park and celebrated afterwards with lunch.

Cllr Bedford, right, presents a bouquet to Blue Street resident Lucy Green as husband Billy and daughter Sophia (eight months looks on). Also pictured in the development’s play area is Colin Dawson, from Waterloo Housing Group who completed all the lettings for the scheme.

Boston College’s Annual Hair and Beauty Showcase was back again as Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students from Level 1 to Level 3 had their chance to showcase the skills and knowledge that they have gained whilst being at College. The students devised inventive hair styles, make-up and costumes based around this year’s themes that included Disney, The Eras, Masquerade, Enchanted, Prom and Avant Garde. Lewis Wilson, Level 3 Hairdressing student said, “The showcase gives us the chance to put our own style and creativity into our work and use different techniques which adds to our portfolio.” Lynne Brocklesby, Barbering Lecturer said, “The event showcased the skills and techniques that the students have learned during their time at Boston College. It provided them with a different working angle from what they are used to as well as facing new pressures. It also gave them a chance to show their presentation skills and work as a team.” Lynne added, “Local businesses attended the showcase, which provided the students

with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills to employers within the area.” Whitney Carter, who is currently on a Level 2 Hairdressing Apprenticeship said, “Doing the showcase has made me think more creatively and it’s given me a different experience. It also gave me the chance to meet new people.” The Showcase was also an opportunity for students from Boston College’s Media & Photography departments to demonstrate their skills and knowledge whilst capturing the catwalk on camera as the models displayed the stylist’s work.

Businesses give Boston a floral boost Another Boston business has shown support for a bid to boost the town. Andrea Maude, owner of Maudes the Jewellers, just off the Market Place in Petticoat Lane, is passionate about Boston and keen to see it fulfil its potential as a destination. Originally from Scotland, she has spent most of her life in Boston and been in business in the town for 40 years. She has put £100 sponsorship towards a Boston in Bloom planting scheme for Wide Bargate and is keen that support is shown for efforts to make the town look more attractive. Her shop is on the main thoroughfare between the Market Place and Pescod Square and she said: “Boston is a lovely place; it has some lovely architecture and a really good range of shops. We should all do all we can to give people more reason to want to visit the town.” She has plans for hanging baskets to brighten the walk along Petticoat Lane by her premises – the connecting path between the Market Place and Pescod Square is among those with the highest footfall in the town. This year the Boston in Bloom committee and its small army of volunteer helpers will be working hard to help the town retain the gold Britain in Bloom award it won last year. Andrea joins Aston Robinson, of Wormgate’s Pelo and Eden hairdressers and beauty salon, who has also donated £100 to Boston in Bloom for planting in the grounds of The Stump Alison Fairman, chairman of Boston in Bloom, said: “It’s really great that businesses are getting behind the efforts to make Boston look better. They recognise the importance of making the town attractive to shoppers but also to visitors and local people.” Former borough councillor Ernie Napier is another who shares a passion for Boston. Now 74, and a borough councillor for 28 years until 2007, he gives his time as a volunteer every Wednesday, rain or shine, to leaflet visitors arriving in town by bus and coach. Over the years he has thrust thousands of Visit Boston leaflets

“We should all do all we can to give people more reason to want to visit the town.” into the hands of those leaving buses and coaches and aiming for the market. “I have always wanted visitors to know that there is much more to Boston than the market, and to encourage them to stay longer, spend more and come back with family and friends.” An updated Visit Boston leaflet is being prepared by the borough council for Mr Napier to hand out to this summer season’s visitors from the coast.

Boston’s Polish newspaper goes into print Boston’s weekly newspaper for residents who have come from Poland has gone into print. The Boston Express has been available since its inception a few months ago only as an electronic document on the internet via social media sites. Now the first edition has appeared in print and is available for free every Friday from drop-off points in Boston. Editor Piotr Ozga has generated revenue to fund printing costs by attracting advertising and thanked Boston-based PAB Translation Centre for translating material submitted in English into Polish. Since its launch the Boston Express has expanded its area to include news and

information from the South Holland area. Piotr is sticking by his original guiding principle of encouraging those from Poland who have made Boston their home to learn more about the town and about living in England. The Boston Express is produced in Polish so that the people it is intended for can read it. But the news is all about what is happening here. Piotr said: I think it is important that we know what is happening about where we are now – here in Boston, our home.” The Boston Express is available to pick up for free from Polish shops in Boston and Spalding, Boston Police Station, Boston College, Boston Library and Boston Borough Council’s main reception at Municipal Buildings in West Street.

Peter’s Notes

am so pleased to hear that a project I have had an interest in from the very beginning has been awarded a £200,000 Government grant. I attended as chairman of Lincolnshire County Council one of the very first events held for charity by the We’ll Meet Again Second World War mobile museum. It is great to hear that the years of dedication and hard work have paid off for Paul and Linda Britchford, and that their living history museum is to have a permanent base here in the borough. It will add to the visitor offer we have, especially as the location is adjacent to the Second World War defences at Freiston Shore, among the best preserved in the country, and close to the RSPB nature reserve. The couple have impressed all who have come into contact with them, by their passion and their determination, including the Ministry of Defence and the Treasury. I know they have been very grateful for the support shown by Matt Warman MP who was a great help in securing the grant announced by the Chancellor George Osborne in his budget speech. They also impressed farmer Janet Bland who has gifted them the land at Plummers Farm they need to make their dream become reality. This all started as a hobby when Paul was just eight and they are now over the moon. They are a couple full of energy and hope to have the new museum centre up and running by the middle of this summer. With plans for a cafe and toilet facilities it will do no end of good in that area. Together with the pill boxes and gun emplacements and RSPB Freiston Shore it will

THE OLD KING’S HEAD

offer a full day out for all the family. They plan to transform an agricultural building and create classrooms and display areas and provide an inter-active Second World War experience for schoolchildren. It will give an opportunity for Paul to get his whole lifelong collection of Second World War memorabilia out of storage There is much interest in what they are going to do at Freiston Shore – watch out for some appearances by household names.

The Old King’s head It is satisfying to have been part of an action to rescue an at-risk Tudor inn dating back to 1599 in Kirton. Now, thanks to a £2 million Heritage Lottery Fund grant, the Old King’s Head is to be restored and brought back into use, providing jobs, trainee opportunities and a boost to local tourism. Heritage Lincolnshire, a charity with an excellent track record in saving historic buildings for new uses, has received HLF support to secure the future of the building, which has now been purchased by the charity. It will be repaired, refurbished and revived as an artisan café and boutique bed and breakfast.

During the Second World War, defences were constructed around Freiston Shore as part of British anti-invasion preparations of World War II. A number of pillboxes, gun emplacements and coastal lights were constructed. The remains of these fortifications can be seen today.

Advice

Problems

cancelling subcriptions?

C

itizens Advice clients report problems cancelling subscriptions on credit or debit cards. Over two million people across Great Britain have experienced problems cancelling recurring payments which are often used for buying products online like e-book subscriptions or video streaming, finds a new report from Citizens Advice. The study, Locked In: consumer issues with subscription traps, also reveals that people are often signed up to these type of recurring payments - also known as Continuous Payment Authorities - without their knowledge. People taking up offers for free trials of slimming pills or discounted beauty treatments find regular payments are taken from their credit or debit card without their apparent authorisation. Details of the ongoing payments can be hidden within the terms and conditions. Sellers often get hold of a customer’s debit or credit card details by asking them to pay for postage or packaging.

“Credit and debit card issuers can help their customers to protect themselves by warning them when recurring payments appear on their accounts.”

500 respondents to the Citizens Advice survey who had a problem with recurring payments: ❖ Just one in eight (12 per cent) of those who asked their card issuer for a refund got all their money back. ❖ 36 per cent had difficulties getting their bank or card issuer to cancel the recurring payments. ❖ One in four (25 per cent) contacted their seller but the seller refused to stop charging them. ❖ A quarter (24 per cent) were unable to contact the seller. ❖ Over half (53 per cent) said they didn’t know they should be able to cancel recurring payments with their seller or credit or debit card issuer.

Four in five people who had a problem with unwanted recurring payments didn’t realise they had signed up to the payments until money was taken from their accounts, finds a Citizens Advice survey of 500 people. A typical payment was worth £80 but some customers lost hundreds of pounds if they didn’t manage to cancel them quickly. According to the UK Cards Association customers can cancel recurring payments with their seller or with their credit or debit card issuer. But Citizens Advice finds that many customers have difficulties getting these payments cancelled. Eight per cent of adults across Great Britain who have ever tried to cancel a repeat service or subscription had their request refused by their bank or card issuer or by the seller, according to a survey of over 2,000 Great Britain adults carried out by

YouGov for Citizens Advice. Citizens Advice is calling on credit and debit card issuers to notify customers when a recurring payment is taken. This would give customers the option to cancel or dispute the payments. Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire Chief Executive Stuart Hellon said: “As the Government launches a review into terms and conditions in consumer contracts there is an opportunity to make much clearer to people the exact amount they will have to pay when they are signing up to recurring payments. We want it to be easier for consumers to cancel recurring payments and we have called on the Financial Conduct Authority to make sure banks play fair. “We are also calling on social media firms and websites that advertise these companies to take them down when they get complaints, and the subscription companies themselves must make it clearer that people are signing up to a subscription in the first place.” If you need to stop a payment you can withdraw consent by simply telling whoever issued your card (the bank, building society or credit card company) that you don’t want the payment to be made. You can tell the card issuer by phone, email or letter. Your card issuer has no right to insist that you ask the company taking the payment first. They have to stop the payments if you ask them to. If you ask to stop a payment, the card issuer should investigate each case on its own merit. They should not apply a blanket policy of refusing to refund payments taken when the client gave their account number out.

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

“Britain’s space industry is going from strength to strength, and for this to continue it’s right we inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.”

Grammar School BGS students have teamed up with The UK Space Agency and RHS to boldly go where none have gone before, turning 16 of our yr8 students into space Biologists as featured on the BBC news and Blue Peter last week. The project, Rocket Science, gives students the chance to learn how investment in human space exploration contributes to our knowledge of life on Earth, using the invaluable expertise of the European Space Agency (ESA) and RHS Science team. After several months on board, orbiting the planet at 17,000mph, the seeds returned to Earth and were sent to BGS, alongside a batch of seeds of the same cultivar that have stayed on Earth. Over the next month pupils will grow and compare the seeds as they embark on a voyage of discovery to see whether we can sustain human life in space through the production of our own food. The results of the nationwide citizen science experiment will then be analysed to discover whether space travel has impacted on the growth of the seeds. British ESA astronaut Tim Peake said: ‘It’s a huge privilege to be the first British ESA astronaut flying to the International Space Station. During my

six-month tour, I’ll be conducting a number of experiments on the International Space Station. I hope that Rocket Science will inspire the next generation to think scientifically, and to consider the fulfilling careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths).’ Minister for Universities and Science Jo Johnson said: ‘Britain’s space industry is going from strength to strength, and for this to continue it’s right we inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. ‘Rocket Science’ is doing just that by giving thousands of schoolchildren the opportunity to play a part in Tim’s mission to the International Space Station’ Emma Winter a registered scientist and Head of Science at BGS said ‘Rocket Science is a really exciting project for us, and a unique chance to get students engaging with horticulture and science. Working with a partner like the UK Space Agency brings a fresh and exciting perspective on horticulture in the National Curriculum. We look forward to discovering the results of the nationwide experiment and presenting our results at the Lincolnshire show in June and using them to support applications for Blue Peter Badges for all the boys in time for the summer holidays.’

Market Basket Challenge

M

arkets offer fresh, seasonal, local ingredients – often at prices that compete favourably with the Big Four. When you buy from a market stall, you are also keeping your money local, putting more pounds into your economy, as well as supporting small businesses, farmers and growers. May is markets month with the annual Love Your Local Market celebrations happening in markets across the UK and we would love it if you could fill your shopping baskets with produce from our local market to take part in the national Market Basket Challenge.

What’s

in season?

Rules of Engagement May 1st to 31st – you have one month to fill your market basket and make a meal from the ingredients, which you will post on Instagram and post along with the name of the market or markets you bought the produce from, along with and the ingredients and method you used to create the dish. All entries will be judged on originality, seasonality, sustainability, ingredients and photography. The winning picture will be decided on May 31st, the close of Love Your Local Market fortnight.

Asparagus New potatoes Chicory Radishes Crab Rocket Elderflowers

Sardines Gooseberries Spring onions Lamb Watercress Nectarines

The Challenge The more seasonal produce you buy, the higher you score but don’t forget you can get so much more from a market than simply fruit and veg. What we really want to see, is what you do with your market basket at home and this can include produce from a plethora of artisans across the country producing everything from charcuterie and cheeses to rearing eggs and British wines. Working with Love British Food, the organisers of British Food Fortnight, the local markets have put together a list of what is in season in May and we would love to see what you make from your market basket – simply post a picture of a dish you have prepared on Instagram with the list of ingredients, your method and the market you bought it from. To post just include #MarketBasketChallenge

One in two children spend an hour or less outside per day, in contrast to prisoners who are guaranteed two hours in the open air every day, a global study has revealed. A survey of 12,000 parents with children aged from five to 12 years old, in 10 countries, found almost a third of children play outside for just 30 minutes or less a day. This research formed the basis of laundry brands’ OMO and Persil’s latest campaign - Free the Kids - Dirt is Good.

Family Life

When a prisoner from a maximum security facility in America was told how little time children spend outside on average around the world, he replied: “Wow, that is depressing. That really is.”

Children’s Party Etiquette Any parent knows that children’s parties can be stressful. From who to invite to chasing RSVPs! You’re not alone – visit any of the major parenting forums and you’ll find plenty of posts detailing the same concerns. Here are some of the most common concerns on the Netmums forum, and some of the great advice users provided.

It’s fairly common for parents not to invite the whole class, especially if their child isn’t close to all of its members.

Am I being mean to only invite half the class to the party? This is a common concern – how do you decide who to invite from your child’s class? Only invite a select few and you run the risk that someone’s feelings will be hurt, invite everyone and your budget can spiral out of control. The consensus seems to be that only inviting

half the class is fine, as long as you make sure you aren’t just leaving out a couple of children. It’s fairly common for parents not to invite the whole class, especially if their child isn’t close to all of its members. Why people don’t RSVP? Is there anything more annoying than people who don’t RSVP? Unfortunately, not knowing who’s going to turn up seems to be a common problem This can be particularly problematic when ordering party bags or food. A good tactic is to include a politely worded caution in the invitation. Something along the lines of ‘food and party bags will be ordered on XXX,

so could you please RSVP by then to let me know either way’. Would you be happy with these as party bags? Handing out party bags has become a staple of children’s parties, but knowing what to put in them is causing some parents a headache. Whilst you don’t want to look like you’ve gone completely over the top (largely due to the impact on your budget!), You don’t want to look like you’ve been too stingy either. The general consensus is that just a couple of quality items is more than enough, with many parents including a mixture of sweets and small toys, with one or two different items for boys and girls. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 19

Finance

Student loans

MARTIN LEWIS

There’s been a furore in Parliament about the scrapping of student grants

E

very time politicians get lairy over such issues, the news focuses on the scrap and the real truth of what’s actually happening gets lost. I’ve been swamped with panicked questions about student grants from students, future students, graduates and their parents, so I want to mythbust what’s really happening. In many ways, financially it’s a no win no fee education. An easy way to think of it is a bit like an extra income tax, with the one difference that once you have repaid what you borrowed (plus interest) it stops. For far more help on this, see my full 20 student loan mythbusters guide at www.mse.me/studentloan.

Q

SO WHAT’S HAPPENING TO STUDENT GRANTS?

A

Until now, students from lower income families (roughly below £43,000 income) had some of their loan replaced by a non-repayable grant for up to £3,400. From September 2016 grants are being scrapped in England and Wales. Yet there’s much confusion about this. There are two big things to note: 1) This only applies for new starters starting from 2016. Those already at university and getting grants will keep getting them. 2) This doesn’t mean they’ll have less money coming in. New 2016 starters will get a bigger loan to replace what they would’ve got in grants. In fact, the loan figures for new starters (not continuing students) have been upped by a chunk.

This is useful, as often the big issue that hits students isn’t the size of the loan, it’s that they don’t have enough money to live on day-to-day.

Q

ISN’T THIS LIKELY TO REALLY HIT POOR STUDENTS HARD?

A

You may be surprised that I’m going to say no. In many ways the big problem is the confusion and psychological deterrent, not the practical finances. For most students it makes no practical difference. The replacement of a grant with a loan will ONLY cost more for those who leave university and have long-term very high earnings. That’s because if you compare the current and new system, the fact it’s a loan and not a grant would only cost you more if you would’ve repaid your entire tuition fees, remaining maintenance loan after the grant, and interest in the 30 years before the debt wipes anyway. Most students won’t, so there’s no cost to them. In fact, my calculations estimate only those on STARTING salaries of £35,000 and up, and then above inflation pay rises would actually pay more. However, the big question is ‘will the system remain unchanged?’

Q

WHAT’S THIS RETROSPECTIVE HIKE TO STUDENT REPAYMENTS?

A

As I explained earlier, since 2012, graduates only repay 9% of what they earn over £21,000. The government had

Student finance: the basics When you go to university, if you’re a first time UK undergraduate you don’t need to pay upfront. The Student Loans Company pays your tuition fees for you and gives you money for living, then you owe it. ❖ You only start repaying when you leave university and, even then, only if you earn over £21,000. If you don’t earn over that you don’t repay. ❖ The amount you repay is proportionate to earnings. You repay 9% of everything above £21,000 (eg, earn £31,000 and, as it’s £10,000 above the threshold, you repay £900 a year). ❖ If you haven’t cleared what you owe within 30 years, the debt is wiped. ❖ If you never earn over £21,000, you never repay.

22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

By Martin Lewis @moneysavingex pert said this threshold was due to rise each year from April 2017 in line with average earnings. Yet the Government has now decided to freeze it for at least five years, meaning many low- and middle-earning graduates will pay thousands more back than they thought they would when they signed up. After all, if we go back to thinking of it like a tax, if you were to pay 9% of everything earned above £22,000, but now repay everything above £21,000, that’s a hike. It’s received little publicity though, as it doesn’t immediately seem such a big problem. Here I need to declare an interest: I was head of the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information in 2012 when the system changed. The Government repeatedly told me the threshold would rise, and I, of course, told people, and used it in all my cost calculations. Well I refuse to missell these loans in hindsight. So I am actively campaigning on it – I’ve written an open letter to the Prime Minister and have personally hired lawyers to see if it can be challenged (read it at www.mse.me/studentloanhike). The big problem, even more important than the additional cost, is the message this sends. The Government is not just freezing it going forward, it’s freezing it for everyone who signed up since 2012 - effectively changing the contract after people have signed up. The regulator would not allow any commercial lender to change its terms this way. This could destroy any trust current and future generations can have in the student finance system, and perhaps, even more widely, in the political system as a whole. I said above that the impact of replacing grants with loans isn’t actually as bad as many think under the current terms. Yet the real concern is, as the Government has shown it’s willing to change loan terms even after you’ve got them, who knows what may happen in the future.

H

ere’s how to clean and decorate your patio for entertaining and outdoor dining. Whether you’ve got a big garden, a simple terrace or a cosy balcony, nothing beats going alfresco when it’s warm. Make the most of every inch of your home by treating your outside space as another room for relaxing in when you’ve got five minutes downtime or for entertaining when friends come over.

rden like Treat the ga your home the inside of

4. Rinse your patio down Using a hose or power washer is tempting but it can drip onto neighbours’ gardens or wash away small plants and even damage the cement and paving stones. Instead, mix water and just a little washing liquid in a bucket and work this across the patio or terrace with a broom. Use an old cloth dipped in the cleaning mix to wipe down railings that birds have been sitting on. Then rinse your surfaces with clean warm water.

5. Make the windows shine Now your outside space looks great, you’ll want to admire it through sparkling windows. Minimize streaking by moving your arm in “S” motions as you pull the squeegee down the glass.

AZALEA SHRUBS are beautiful plants to see bloom. These plants can grow up to 60cm tall and can be found with either red, pink or white blossoms. Although these plants are native to China and Thailand, they can be found in many parts of the world. Being relatively easy plants to maintain, they are also easy to grow in most climates. The best time to plant Azaleas is either late spring or early autumn and preferably in slightly acidic soil that has been well drained.

Sweet Smelling Kitchens – They do exist! 1. Clear up! You’ll be amazed how just this one action will transform your landscape. Over the winter rain and mud will have splashed up and given everything standing on your terrace or patio a brown stain. Remove any plant pots and garden furniture (put them in the front garden or on an old sheet in your hallway if you have to). Brush around the patio or terrace, thoroughly to clear away any remaining old leaves and twigs and chuck out any forgotten garden toys that got battered and broken in winter storms.

2. Do a cobweb sweep Don’t just look down as you brush away dust and debris, check walls and the shed roof for cobwebs and anything else that was blown about while you’ve been inside in the colder months.

❖ Before you cook, open a window, close the kitchen door and turn on the extractor fan. Your secret weapon Febreze is your best friend when it comes to banishing nasty niffs because it doesn’t just mask odours it completely eliminates

6. Set the scene

them. Febreze comes in Aerosols and Plug Ins and there’s even a Fabric Refresher for things like your cushions and curtains. ❖ During cooking toss smelly items such as fish scraps into a plastic bag to go straight into the outside bin helps to

prevent smells taking hold. It’s also a good idea to wash up as you go along. ❖ A fragrant fridge Make sure all the food in your fridge is well covered. A small bowl of baking powder placed on one of the shelves will absorb any smells.

3. Scrub the barbecue Over the winter dust and dirt might have clogged up your barbecue – not a tasty thought! If there is still old grease on the grill from last summer, sprinkle baking soda over it, leave it for 24 hours, wipe it off and scrub the grill and all surfaces down with a strong kitchen cleaner. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 25

T

he GLE 350d Coupe 4Matic AMG Line, on test here, doesn’t know the meaning of ‘subtle’. It doesn’t need to. After all, why buy a machine of this magnitude if you don’t want people to notice you? The car’s looks will divide opinion. It’s a bit like looking at a certain well-known, generous-nosed, French actor. Some women swoon, other’s scowl at the sight of him. But, whether you think the GLE is handsome or hideous, it is definitely mesmerising. So, what exactly is the GLE Coupe all about? Well, it’s Mercedes-Benz’s answer to super-SUVs, such as the Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport and BMW X6. The goliath houses either a 3.0 litre V6 diesel, churning out 255bhp or a far less sensible V6 petrol, producing 362bhp. Both engines come hooked up to a slickshifting nine-speed automatic ‘box. Behind the wheel, the diesel model has more than enough pull for British roads and, in AMG Line trim, you can either waft or thunder along encased in splendid surroundings. Kit includes: heated front seats, climate control, a DAB radio tuner, auto dimming and folding mirrors, parking sensors and a reversing camera. On the move, body roll is not really noticeable – which, considering the heft of the GLE, is a feat of engineering and design in itself. The permanent four-wheel 26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

If you love pomp and ceremony, you will adore this broad-shouldered offering from Mercedes-Benz “The air-suspension hides the fact that you’re riding around on 21 inch alloys by soaking up even the evillest of potholes.” drive set-up provides tons of traction, too, so the mighty Merc is safe, as well as talented at delivering driving enjoyment. You can sharpen up the steering and throttle response, and you can even adjust the air suspension at the touch of button. But, if you don’t want your passengers throwing up, the Merc is best left in its standard ‘Comfort’ mode. Here, the SUV is in its ‘natural’ state, allowing you to control its power in a more measured way, while the well-weighted steering guides the car through twisty tarmac effortlessly, rather than crazily. The air-suspension hides the fact that you’re riding around on 21 inch alloys by

soaking up even the evillest of potholes. There is only one price to pay for the awesomely outsized wheels – and that’s a bit of extra noise. This is only really noticeable at motorway speed, but combined with 70mph wind-blast around the wing mirrors, the calm of the otherwise hushed cabin can become threatened at times. The GLE Coupe will take five-up, no problem - and even though it’s a coupe, rear passenger head and leg-space is ample. Only six-footers, upwards, will be vaguely bothered by the low-slung roofline. Room in the boot is very good, too, with plenty of space for a pushchair and the weekly shop. Only the high load lip rains on the parade, making the lifting of heavy items into the cargo area more of a chore than it should be. When all is said and done, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350d Coupe 4Matic AMG Line is a well-appointed, fine-driving vehicle. The engine and automatic gearbox are nothing short of perfect; the steering response and handling are bang on the money – and even the sophisticated switchgear takes some beating.
