Welcome to the October issue Wow, how can summer be over and I am thinking of dragging my boots out from the depths of my wardrobe? It only seems like a few weeks ago we were basking in hot summer days with the holidays before us and here we are teetering into Autumn and Winter. September has been a great month, we have enjoyed a family holiday in Cornwall and celebrated our wedding anniversary while we were there. We have had a family wedding, which is a great time to catch up with relatives I don’t see too often as well as an opportunity to get glammed up for the day! And on top of this I have my birthday to look forward to in a few weeks, I just don’t relish the thought of being another year older, my thirties are flying by! Talking of weddings in this issue we are helping you plan for the big day and entertain your guests, so if you are getting married this year make sure you check out our wedding special on page 22. A helping hand!

£1.8 million pound town centre project

Do you enjoy listening to and helping people? Are you looking for a volunteering role where you can do just that? Do you want to fit it around your family, studies or other commitments? Everyone has something to give, now is a good time to make volunteering and community service part of your daily life and the life of Lincolnshire. “Volunteering for Healthwatch Lincolnshire is richly rewarding for all involved. When you give up your time and resources, you are making a difference. Assisting Healthwatch Lincolnshire is a valuable experience that no one can take back from you.” Sarah Fletcher, CEO

Boston Borough Council is pressing ahead with a bid for a £1.8 million Townscape Heritage Initiative. Support for the project has already been given in principle by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and to progress it the council now has to complete a second-stage application with a Conservation Area Management Plan. If successful the initiative would secure £1 million from the HLF, supported by other private sector and public funding making a total project value of £1.8 million. The borough council’s contribution would be £125,000. The plan explains in detail how the special character of Boston’s town centre and conservation area will be preserved and enhanced and public opinion is now sought on the plan.

By becoming a Healthwatch Lincolnshire volunteer and donating your time, energy and skills, you can make a real difference to the lives of Lincolnshire residents. As a Healthwatch Lincolnshire volunteer you will be in touch with Lincolnshire residents who all use the NHS and Social Care Services. By offering confidential support, information and help to access the right services, you can enable people to live their lives to the full and make informed choices. Healthwatch Lincolnshire needs your help. We are looking for: Community Champions, Enter and View Authorised

Representatives, Newshounds, Mystery Shoppers, Helping Hands, Hub Leads and Every Voice Counts. Visit our website www.healthwatchlincolnshire. co.uk and take a sneaky look at our role descriptions. One of the above roles may not be right for you or may not match your individual skills or knowledge – maybe we can create a role to match you? If you would like to find out more without any obligation please contact us by telephoning 01205 820892 or by email to info@healthwatchlincolnshire. co.uk “Being a Healthwatch Lincolnshire volunteer is a very rewarding role,” said Maureen (Admin and Enter and View Volunteer), “it gives me a boost when I have done something or made a difference.”

Are you Hot footed? Welcome to this year’s Fire Walk, another notable and hot, hot, hot event in The Butterfly Hospice Trust fundraising calendar! Boston College Are Number One For a Second Year Running The Skills Funding Agency have recently published the 2014/2015 success rate tables, and Boston College are delighted to have featured as the highest performing college in Lincolnshire for a second year running. Boston College has come out as the top college within Lincolnshire, being number one in each category that is measured. The first set of results to be released were for ‘All age, all levels’. This category is very large due to the fact that it considers the total number of qualifications delivered by a college including all age groups and at all levels, and this is therefore an incredible achievement. Another category in which Boston College was the best performing is Apprenticeships. They ran the most Apprenticeship programmes in the county across all areas of the college in the last academic year and also had the highest success rate. The fact that there is such a variety of course availability and that the college is number one in the county with regards to retention, success and achievement rates, just reinforces the importance for young people to explore all options after GCSEs and to trust in the opportunities for success continually provided by Boston College. These brilliant figures showing great success simply emphasise the

positive impact that the college continues to have on the community. On this success Fiona Grady, Vice Principal for Curriculum and Quality at the college, said “Boston College is once again the highest performing further education college in Lincolnshire according to student achievement data published by the government last month. The hard work and dedication of staff and students resulted in the college coming out top of the league tables for all age groups and qualification types. As well as being number one for A-levels and vocational diplomas, the college also had the best apprenticeship achievement rates, which is reflective of consistent success across all areas of provision at Boston College.” For more information on Boston College and the courses on offer, please visit www.boston.ac.uk or call the information line on 01205 313218.

Thanks to hundreds concerned about future development More than 600 comments from the public have been received as part of work on a blueprint for the future of development in Boston borough and South Holland. The latest South East Lincolnshire Local Plan public consultation closed recently and the comments are now on the system ready for the decision-making stages. All those who took the time to look at the detail and submit their observations have been thanked. One reason for such a good response has been put down to a specially-constructed online consultation facility. Internet-based consultation systems have been available for a number of years and are very costly to buy, install and maintain. So, in these times when finances are very tight the Local Plan’s team in Boston asked the borough council’s IT section to

build its own system. The consultation system works alongside the Local Plan website - www.southeastlincslocalplan.org - and it is open when a public consultation is running. The public can not only register and make comment to the documents themselves but can also see the other comments made. A lot of comments were still made through emails and on paper but more and more are looking at the information online and using the consultation IT tool. Comments should be relevant to planning issues, not personal or likely to cause offence and, if you are serious about having your comments considered and responded to, attributable to a real person. The plan gives the HLF confidence that the council is serious about its conservation area and understands what is needed to

manage and improve it. Funding will enable investment in buildings on the east side of the Market Place and the Dolphin Lane and Pump Square areas. There could be significant building repairs, shop front improvements and other refurbishment, enhancing and regenerating important lanes, shops and buildings helping to make Boston more attractive for residents, visitors and inward investors. It would also help sustain existing businesses. The council’s Cabinet agreed to take into account comments from public consultation, make any appropriate adjustments and adopt the management plan as part of the evidence in support of the council’s bid to the HLF. Council leader, Cllr Peter Bedford, told the Cabinet: “£125,000 for £1.8 million is a pretty good investment.”

Public consultation will run until October 7. The Conservation Area Management Plan can be found at http://bit.ly/2c7Lfr0 along with the Conservation Area Appraisal document http://bit.ly/2cfhXs1 which informs the Management Plan. If you would like to submit your views please email your comments to transformation@boston.gov.uk

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston

Peter’s Notes

W

ater is life - it really is that simple. It is essential for life on planet Earth, and whenever scientists look for signs of life elsewhere in the universe they look first for indications of H2O. It can also be one of the most destructive forces of Nature.

Water is one of the reasons why I recently spent two days at the House of Commons representing Boston. The other day was spent giving evidence to an all-party Parliamentary group investigating social integration. The “Water For Growth” launch also involved Andrea Leadsome, the recently-appointed Secretary of State for Defra, MP Matt Warman, Mark Tinsley, Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership board member and chairman of the Greater Lincolnshire Water Board and Peter Bateseon, chief executive of Witham Fourth Internal Drainage Board. Water For Growth is a plan to manage flood risk and water resources as a critical factor in enabling economic growth up to 2040, and has been drawn up with the involvement of 50 different local stakeholders. Because of the low-lying nature of large areas of Lincolnshire, and especially the Boston area, and its proximity to the sea, we are already world leaders in controlling both tidal and fluvial water. It’s this ongoing expertise that keeps our feet dry in developed areas, some of which are even below sea level.

The Water For Growth plan aims for Greater Lincolnshire to be seen as a national exemplar for water management and to act as an incentive for investors. It sets out the water supply challenges for Greater Lincolnshire and the potential for new reservoirs and water distribution infrastucture. Did you know, for instance, that some parts of the county are drier than Miami, Beunos Aires and Nairobi and have the same rainfall as Cape Town. A secure water supply and security from flooding are vital for the agri-food industries, and important for national food security. There is an anticipation that in Greater Lincolnshire this sector’s economic contribution by 2030 will double, 29,000 new jobs will be created and 100,000 new homes will be needed to meet growth. No other part of the country has taken this approach, or has identified water management as an essential factor in bringing about economic growth. Water is an important factor in our Devolution deal, to bring in additional resources and so we can take decisions locally on such a fundamental issue. We have already begun to do things differently with a multi-agency partnership to tackle the threat of flooding from the sea at Wrangle Banks where a section of The Wash shoreline is low lying. We must plan to protect the most productive land in the country - 35 per cent of the nation’s vegetables and potatoes are grown in this area. Cllr Peter Bedford Below: Peter Bedford, left, with Boston and Skegness MP Matt Warman, at the Water For Growth launch at the House of Commons.

Funerals

Funerals Humanist Funerals The death of someone we know and love is often shocking and painful, even if it is expected. Humanist funerals and memorial services offer a personal and fitting way to say goodbye to those who have lived without religion. Many thousands are conducted by our celebrants each year. Humanist funerals bring people together to express sadness at the loss but also to celebrate the life lived. They focus sincerely and affectionately on the person who has died, paying tribute to the connections they made and left behind and the way they lived their life.

Practicalities Whilst a funeral director is the professional most likely to deal with the practical arrangements of a funeral, what type of ceremony you choose is entirely up to you. And since funerals themselves have no legal status, humanist funerals – like all others – can be held in a variety of places, although in practice most are held in crematoria, cemeteries or

woodland burial sites. “Whilst still sad, people thought it was a beautiful and uplifting funeral and many commented that is was the most personal funeral they’d ever been to.”

Working with a celebrant British Humanist Association funeral celebrants are sensitive people, empathetic to the experience of bereavement but focused on providing a funeral ceremony that will be most fitting for the circumstances. They are familiar with cremation and burial procedures and will guide you through the whole process of arranging a funeral ceremony. Funeral celebrants: • Meet with the family or friends most closely connected with the person who has died to learn more about that person and ensure that the funeral justly captures their life and personality • Advise on practical matters, such as options for the committal, for example, or the amount of time available for the ceremony at the crematorium

• Listen to your ideas on music or readings and provide their own suggestions if needed • Share their ideas and draw on their experience when appropriate • Liaise with those involved in the ceremony, for example, anyone who will be reading a tribute or a poem / piece of prose • Write a unique ceremony that’s absolutely fitting for the person who has died and the circumstances • Have a calm presence on the day, leading the ceremony with warmth and dignity • Give you a presentation copy of the final script. “You struck exactly the right tone and balance. Many people commented to me that they could not believe that you had never met her! People were also very interested to hear details of her life. For most it was the first time they had attended a humanist service of any description and I only received positive comments. They appreciated the honesty of the service and the fact that it was all about my mother with no other influences.”

Funeral Plan Guaranteed peace of mind for you and your family A Lincolnshire Co-op Funeral Plan offers unrivalled peace of mind & protection against the rising cost of funerals.

Sad day, but distance now no object

For a free information pack or for any other funeral services call 01205 362 512.

Losing a loved one is devastating – not being able to attend their funeral service to say that final farewell makes these sad occasions seem even worse. You may be separated at the final parting because of ill health or distance. Boston Crematorium has the answer – latest two-way webcasting technology to link anyone, anywhere to the service in the chapel as it happens. Already a funeral service has been transmitted live to a grieving widower, ill in hospital, and on another occasion a relative in Australia was able to to deliver a eulogy via a large screen in the chapel. The large screen can also be used to display other visual tributes using photographs and video footage set to music. For further information please telephone the Crematorium office on 01205 364612 or email info@bostoncrematorium.co.uk

Advice

Ten things you need to know about smart meters 1

SMART METERS ARE A NEW TYPE OF METER FOR GAS AND ELECTRICITY which will be

offered to all British households over the next few years. Smart meters send meter readings directly to your energy supplier and will enable a range of new services like displays that show you exactly how much energy you’re using and the cost of that energy. Smart meters should mean that manual meter readings, estimated and back bills will become a thing of the past and will also allow you access to more detailed information about your personal energy usage which can help with deciding about switching and energy efficiency.

2

MANY ENERGY SUPPLIERS WILL START INSTALLING SMART METERS THIS YEAR

Some energy suppliers have already begun installing smart (and advanced) meters in their customers’ homes but the main phase of the rollout is due to begin in late 2016. Other energy suppliers are still trialling smart meters and are likely to wait until 2017 to begin offering them.

3

SMART METERS ARE OPTIONAL

While energy suppliers are obliged to offer smart meters to everyone by 2020 you don’t have to accept one if you don’t want one. In the future, smart meters will be the only option available to replace old meters. However, you’ll still be able to request that your supplier not make use of the smart meter functionality, meaning that it will act like a standard meter.

4

YOU SHOULD BE OFFERED AN ‘IN-HOME DISPLAY

Energy suppliers are required to offer an InHome Display (IHD) with your smart meter. The display will show you how much energy you’re using and an approximate cost of that energy. It can also show your past usage and many include a ‘traffic light’ system to tell you when your usage is particularly high or low. Different suppliers will offer different IHDs so you may want to ask what features yours will come with.

5

YOU CAN DECIDE HOW OFTEN ENERGY USAGE INFORMATION IS SHARED

You can choose how often energy usage information is sent via your smart meter to your energy supplier. By default, your supplier will be allowed to collect one meter reading per day and they need to tell you if they want to do this. Energy suppliers will have to ask for your consent to collect anything more detailed. You will also be able to choose to share as little as one meter reading a month and change your mind about how much you share at any time. Your energy supplier isn’t allowed to use your smart meter data for marketing purposes unless you give them permission. The detailed data shown on your In-Home Display will remain in your home and your supplier won’t be able to see it unless you give them permission.

6

YOU WON’T BE CHARGED FOR THE INSTALLATION OF YOUR SMART METER

The costs of smart meters are going to be paid through everyone’s energy bills, just as current meters are, so there should be no charges when it’s installed. This also means that the cost of smart meters will be shared amongst everyone whether or not you agree to have a smart meter.

7

YOU MAY INITIALLY LOSE SOME ‘SMART SERVICES’ IF YOU SWITCH SUPPLIER

Getting a smart meter in the early part of the

rollout won’t stop you from being able to switch supplier but you may lose some ‘smart services’ (for example remote meter reads) for a period of time. Newer models of smart meters that suppliers will start to install later in 2016 will resolve this problem so you should check with your supplier to confirm what impact switching may have on your particular meter. Eventually all compliant smart meters will be able to switch without any loss of functionality but ones installed earlier may take longer.

8

SMART METERS CAN BE CREDIT OR PREPAY

9

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ‘SMART’ AND ‘ADVANCED’ METER

Smart meters will be able to work both in ‘credit’ and ‘prepayment’ modes. Because of this, prepayment tariffs should become cheaper in the future. Smart meters will also allow for new ways to top-up your meter by phone, online or through an app in addition to current methods.

Some suppliers have installed ‘advanced’ meters which, while providing some smart functionality (like remote meter readings) do not meet government specifications for smart meters. These meters were often described as ‘smart’ when they were installed but are likely to need to be replaced before 2020. If you want to know if this might happen start by asking your energy supplier what type of meter you have. IT’S UP TO YOU! It is up to you whether you choose to have a smart meter now and access the various benefits they offer immediately or wait until later when newer smart meter models are available that may eliminate the switching issues. For more information about smart meters, our specialist energy advisers are here to help. Contact us on 01529 308423 for an appointment.

Every new rider can come along for three rides for free so it really is ‘try before you buy’ and for just £10 a year, member benefits include: • Free entry to the annual 10 mile ‘Time Trials’ ran by the club in the early summer • Group trips to Derby velodrome • The opportunity to ride club organised free group rides or ‘sportives’ further afield • Access to all the help and support of a team of experienced riders from all walks of life • Thanks to an exclusive partnership with Halfords Boston store, each member has access to 10% off in store against all full price purchases and 25% off all Silver and Gold bike servicing.

Meet Boston Wheeler member Sandra Smith Sandra signed up for the Butterfly Hospice Big Bike Ride last year with her son Liam raising an incredible £1,000 for Cancer Research. As a new rider wanting to really push herself, her furthest bike ride before the event was 30 miles. Being supported and encouraged by her son and club members who she met on the ride – she completed her 66 mile challenge. Sandra promptly joined the club and quickly rose from a novice rider, putting in the miles on her own or with her son, to a fully fledged club rider. In her first years riding, not only did she go on to complete her first century (100 mile bike ride in one day) but she now regularly joins in on the intermediate rides, riding in excess of 100 miles each week and is going from strength to strength, which just goes to show the difference joining a cycling club can make whatever your aspirations.

F

itzgerald’s Bed Centre opened it’s doors 23 years ago in Bourne and is now celebrating 7 years of trading here, in Spalding. The family business also has stores in Stamford and Peterborough. Back in 2009 in the midst of the recession local businessman Paul Fitzgerald bucked the trend of filling the space of an empty retail outlet. The bed store in Westlode Street has welcomed hundreds of new customers through the doors since opening on September 25th 2009.

The First Fitzgerald’s Bed Store It was 23 years ago that Paul opened the first Fitzgerald’s Bed Store in Bourne which has always been based on Abbey Road. Ten years ago he also opened in Stamford on West Street and 5 years ago he opened his fourth store at Cygnet Park, Hampton, Peterborough. All four stores offer a wide choice of beds at very competitive prices and Paul prides himself on the company’s excellent customer service and will often go that extra mile for his customers. Fitzgeralds is under the management of Ian Yarnell who has been with the company for 7 years of offers all customers a wealth of knowledge. Both Paul and Ian are passionate about good old fashioned customer service.

“We are often asked many questions relating to the best mattress for health conditions and it isn’t a simple one size fits all, it’s often a case of trying three or four for 5 or 10 minutes to see which has the right feel and comfort for each individual” Great Service, Fantastic Prices It’s not just beds Fitzgerald’s sell, they have memory foam style mattresses, pillows, futons and a selection of bedroom furniture also available. October Events at Boston Library

by C.L Taylor

Jane Hughes is happier than she’s ever been. Jane Hughes has a job she loves, a man she adores and a lovely cottage in Wales. But Jane Hughes does not exist. Five years earlier, Jane and her best friends went on what should have been a trip of a lifetime, but rapidly descended into a nightmare that claimed the lives of 2 women. Someone knows the truth about what happened, and they won’t stop until they’ve destroyed Jane. A brilliantly tense psychological thriller packed with twists and turns about friendship, betrayal and murder!

News about Lincolnshire Library Loans: From the 1st October 2016 the standard loan period for books and talking books borrowed from Lincolnshire Libraries will be changing from four weeks to three. Changing to a three week loan period will enable a greater turnover in stock giving customers a wider selection, of new and popular titles in particular, as well as reducing reservation waiting times for “out of library items”. Not all loan periods will change though. Items borrowed from Mobile Libraries will retain the four week loan in line with scheduled stops. DVD hire and loans to subscription groups, Listening Lincs and Home Library Service customers will also remain unchanged. To ensure customers have time to adjust to the change in loan periods, an eight week fines amnesty will be held from 1st October to 26th November 2016. This will cover the first two new loan periods and mean that customers won’t be penalised for forgetting about the new arrangements. Please ask a member of library staff for more information if you have any questions

Spooktacular Fun Have an ‘incy-wincy’ bit of fun this Halloween

I

t’s October, a time of ghoulish costumes, grinning pumpkins, creepy crawlies and things that go bump in the night! Whether you love or hate trick or treating, (personally I can’t abide it and delight in taking homemade cookies to all our neighbours to spread cheer instead), spiders and witches are likely to feature somewhere in the celebrations. Which brings me to my 10-year-old son’s brain teaser – ‘Would you rather bathe in eels or shower in spiders?’ – Hobson’s choice if ever there was one, although if pushed it would have to be eels! Spiders and creepy crawlies have a special role in scaring the life out of many of us. There’s something about their speed and unpredictability, not to mention the fangs poised for action. Or perhaps it’s just too easy to imagine them scaled up like some scary sci fi creature? For a young baby, watching a daddy long legs walking precariously on its delicate limbs is a thing of wonder to marvel at. Intrigued by its bobbing movement but already conscious of not wanting it to come too close, of course adult’s reactions to spiders help shape children’s future fears. Anyone familiar with nursery rhymes and fairytales will know that suspense, excitement and a surprising amount of horror are essentials for captivating and thrilling

children. With most fairytales exploring the polarities of good and evil, beauty and the beast, spiders, dragons, witches and creepy crawlies add to the interest of peek a boo and hide and seek as Incy Wincy disappears and reappears to a squeal of delight. Scary as they are, Bruno Bettleheim understood the importance of children being exposed to contained ‘islands’ of scariness, preparing children as they do for life’s ups and downs and helping them face their fears. With a bit of inventiveness, Halloween can help capture children’s interest and get them involved in exploration, reading, writing, maths and crafts. Unlock

children’s imagination with story-telling, from ‘Aaaarrgghh, Spider’ to ‘Harry Potter’, with a range of voices and some well-chosen props, prepare to watch children delight in their magical spookiness. Or make counting fun by weighing and mixing up potions or wizard’s favourite fairground game - catching rubbery spiders and snakes hiding in yukky tubs. October is the perfect time to fuel children’s imagination with some scary stories and these creepy crafts and ‘spooktacular’ activities. Complementary

W

hen you are unwell, you see your GP for advice and you may leave the surgery with a prescription. Your doctor - and the medication they prescribe - is considered part of conventional medicine. If you also visit a chiropractor or acupuncturist for treatment, you’d be in the field of complementary and alternative medicine, sometimes referred to as CAM.

There are a number of alternative and complementary therapies available in the UK. Some of these treatments have been claimed to help some people alleviate the symptoms of certain illnesses. However, other alternative therapies don’t have enough medical evidence to determine if they are effective. Complementary and alternative therapies should not be used to replace the treatment recommended by your doctor.

Many complementary and alternative therapists are registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) which was set up by the government to give a degree of regulation to the sector.

Acupuncture Reflexology

What it is: Traditional Chinese acupuncture is based on the theory that vital energy called Qi circulates around the body along channels called meridians. Blockages in the flow of Qi are thought to cause ill health. The aim of acupuncture is to restore a balance of energy and good health to the body. The evidence: Many of acupuncture’s benefits still haven’t been confirmed. That’s because more studies on acupuncture need to be performed. However, evidence suggests that acupuncture holds promise for relieving vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy. Also, hospitals, hospices and clinics use acupuncture to help relieve pain.

Aromatherapy

What it is: Reflexology is based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all organs and parts of the body. Particular massage movements on these areas are thought to improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The evidence: A study in 2008 failed to find any good-quality evidence that reflexology can effectively treat any health condition. The following year, a review of available research found that reflexology was an effective treatment for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who had bladder problems. aromatherapy works. Various reviews of the effect of aromatherapy on conditions including pain management in labour, dementia and psychiatric disorders have usually concluded that more studies or better designed research is needed.

more conditions. The evidence: Chiropractic medicine does seem to provide some relief for lower back pain, although it may not be any better than other back pain treatments, such as painkillers, exercise and physiotherapy. However, there is no good evidence that spinal manipulation is an effective treatment for any other health condition.

Hypnotherapy What it is: Hypnotherapy is a technique designed to direct a person’s imagination in a way that helps change their thoughts, feelings and behaviour. It can help as part of psychotherapy because the hypnotic state allows people to explore painful thoughts, feelings and memories that they might have hidden from their conscious minds. People may seek help

from a hypnotherapist to relieve anxiety, improve sleeping, stop smoking, address phobias or deal with issues over their weight. The evidence: Hypnotherapy is not ‘mind control’ or ‘brainwashing’ and is only effective if the subject is committed to relaxing and has an open mind receptive to the therapist. Although hypnosis is not considered a dangerous procedure, it does pose a risk of creating false memories - usually as a result of unintended suggestions by the therapist.

Then if unusual spending patterns happen, their card is cut off for a set time, say 10 weeks, unless a nominated trusted friend or mental health case worker agrees it should be unfrozen, because the high spend is, for example, just due to a house move. SPEAK TO A NON-PROFIT DEBT HELP AGENCY. If you’re in debt crisis, then www.CitizensAdvice.org.uk, www.StepChange.org, www.NationalDebtline.org and especially www.CapUK.org can help – I say especially as it also does emotional counselling too. CAN YOU CUT THE INTEREST RATE? The lower it is the more of your repayments clear the actual debt. A balance transfer credit card can shift debt to 0% for 40 months. CONSIDER INFORMING YOUR BANK. Once a lender is aware that a customer has a mental health condition, it has to make adjustments. The Lending Code says banks should consider keeping a debt inhouse rather than passing it to debt collectors, and they should make court action the last resort. Though telling your bank is a decision to discuss carefully with a caseworker or debt counsellor. YOU CAN’T BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH. In other words, if the fact you’ve declared your illness to a bank affects your ability to get other products with them, such as a mortgage, it would likely breach the Equality Act. KNOW THE EARLY WARNING SIGNS. Even when people plunge into debt, issues like depression don’t bite overnight. Look out for tension headaches, arguments at work, back pain or bad skin. And seek help.

PRIORITISE HEATING AND EATING. Don’t simply pay those who hassle you the hardest. The debt counsellors above can help. BANKING CONTROL IF YOU HAVE BIPOLAR. A few banks have minor procedures to allow you to register your mental health issues and stop your overdraft going beyond a certain amount. Bipolar disorder sufferers, who may be prone to overspending during a manic episode, could consider discussing this with their bank. It’s worth chatting through with a debt counsellor or case worker first. CONSIDER ADDING A NOTE ON YOUR CREDIT FILE. If you overspend when you are unwell, you can volunteer to add information on mental health problems to your credit files in what’s called a ‘notice of correction’. This alerts potential lenders so they don’t lend further credit. This can be added or removed whenever you want though. Yet it may stop you borrowing when you are well. 8. CONSIDER PAYING BILLS BY DIRECT DEBIT. This can simplify your finances, helping to ensure bills get paid when you’re ill. Yet while direct debits for gas and electricity bills, home phone and broadband can save you money, home and car insurers charge you interest so annual payments better. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS AN UNSOLVABLE DEBT. For as long as I’ve been doing my job, I’ve never once seen a debt case that isn’t solvable. It may not be easy, it may not be quick, but I want you to know it is ALWAYS doable. If you start to sort it out, it does get better.

Something for the kids Let’s be honest, weddings can be boring for kids, with those big gaps between food and the dancing! Keep the little ones laughing and enjoying themselves with professional children’s entertainers such as balloon modellers, clowns, face painters, stilt walkers and even a mob of meerkats in a mobile petting zoo. Wicked! Shakin’ up a storm These aren’t just drinks, these are the world’s favourite cocktails created by skilled mixers with flair, style and a lot of bottle juggling. Entertaining and intoxicating at the same time! Just in case the British weather should prove a trifle inclement during the proceedings, choose artists and entertainment that works well inside and out, such as close-up magicians, caricaturists, celebrity look-a-likes, small format jazz bands, soloists and most children’s entertainers.

READY FOR A C L OSE U P

THE FLOWERS The Flowers

The right mix of style and simplicity has been the cornerstone of fabulous wedding floral arrangements in 2016. Just picked. Arrangements that feature both whatever is in season and whatever is local are gaining traction. Sometimes couples request a “wild” look but what they’re after are freshly picked flowers. These free-form bouquets and centerpieces often include a mix of big and small blooms in more than one color, and might use spiky flowers or fruiting vines to serve as exclamation points. Tone-on-tone explosion. A concentrated cluster of one color lends a graphic impact to centerpieces. Ask your florist to choose three to five different flowers in the same shade — the slight color variations create an ombré effect. For an uber-romantic feel, stick to the opposite ends of the color spectrum — either pale or deeply saturated. Or set the table up for fun by picking a hyper-vivid neon or a playful sorbet shade. Look, don’t eat! Everyone’s a foodie these days, so it’s no surprise that savvy couples are asking florists to include elements like coffee beans and fragrant herbs (say, mint or basil) into centerpieces and garlands. Petite seasonal fruits and vegetables are another way to layer on color. Flowers not necessary. Potted trees, succulents, ferns, lavender sprigs and decorative leaves (such as magnolia, begonia) are no longer reserved for anchoring flower arrangements — these days they can become the focal point of the décor. Flowering plants and blooming branches (think flowering quince, crab apple or cherry blossom) also work well as creative centerpieces. And a budget-friendly elegant idea is to adorn bare branches with crepe-paper flowers or sparkly jewels.

Transform Your Home with a Change of Flooring

A

re you thinking about replacing flooring in your home? Consider the costs, benefits, and the downsides of each type of flooring before you commit. Here is a list of the most popular types of flooring, their pros and cons, and the rooms for which they are best suited.

hardwoods also need treating occasionally in high-traffic areas. Standing water can also ruin hardwoods. Best Rooms: The best place to put hardwoods is in a living room. It looks good and is stylish. It is not a high-traffic area such as a hallway so the wood can remain protected. You can also use a rug to muffle the noise a bit.

Hardwoods

Laminate

Costs: Depending on the type of hardwoods you go with can massively affect the total cost. Engineered wood will cost you a little less. On top of the cost of materials, you will need to pay to get it installed which will likely run you in the hundreds or thousands of pounds. Pros: Hardwoods look very nice and have a great resale value. They are easy to clean and maintain and usually only require vacuuming. Cons: The cost is the largest drawback. Like tile, hardwoods are also loud to walk on. Real

Costs: Again, this ranges in price, but if you are a handy DIYer laminate is something that you could self install. Pros: My favorite thing about laminate is that it does not easily scratch. And if it does, a little vegetable oil rubbed on the scratch will get it right out. It also can look like real wood or tile, and it can even be difficult to tell if it is real or not. Like hardwoods, laminate is easy to clean. It is also great for pets because they can’t scratch or stain it.

Cons: Standing water will ruin laminate flooring. I learned this the hard way after having a refrigerator leak, and I ended up having to replace all the flooring in my kitchen. If the laminate does get ruined, unlike read hardwoods, laminate can not be refinished. Best Rooms: Laminate is great for high traffic areas such as a hallway or any room with a lot of activity because of its durability. I highly recommend not putting it in a kitchen, bathroom, or a laundry room since laminate should not get wet.

Carpet

Costs: The cost of carpet varies greatly depending on the quality. You will also need to have an underlay, you can improve the feel of quality with a thicker underlay. 2 - Tile Pros: Carpet not only feels soft, but it also Costs: There are many different types of tile. Vinyl

Costs: Vinyl flooring is a great low cost flooring option Pros: Like carpet, vinyl is quiet and easy on your feet. It is inexpensive compared to some of the other flooring types. Cons: Although vinyl has come a long way and can be made to look like wood or tile, it still does not look as good as the real thing. Vinyl can dent and tear. Best Rooms: Vinyl is great for a kitchen or utility room as it can shield a lot of the sound from your washing machines. It could also work well in bathrooms because of the warmth it adds.

Christmas party planning

The recipe for a

great work Christmas party

‘T

is the season of Christmas parties! If you’ve been tasked with organising your festive works do this year, you’ll undoubtedly want to make sure it’s an evening to remember – for all the right reasons, of course. It’s no mean feat choosing a venue and a menu that will please everyone, but with some careful preparation and a healthy dose of creativity, it can be achieved. We believe the following ingredients make up the recipe for the ultimate Christmas party.

A pinch of organisation We know, we know – planning is sometimes considered the boring part, but it really is necessary if you want the festive get-together to go without a hitch. Book your venue well in advance, and make sure your plans are inclusive of everyone’s age, budget, dietary requirements and location. Employers often forget to put on transportation to and from the party – but whether it’s a taxi, minibus or coach, this is always a most welcome touch.

A sprinkle of originality While we’re all fond of tradition, there’s something to be said for breaking the mould and trying something new for your Christmas do, as opposed to a sit-down meal with turkey and all the trimmings. Don’t even think about putting up some tinsel and holding the party in the office! Getting the team out of the usual day-to-day environment can really bring people out of their shell, help colleagues mix and break down any hierarchies. Why not try something totally different like wine tasting, cocktail making or even zip lining?

A dollop of gratitude

A smidgen of a theme

A theme for your Christmas party will really help create a sense of unity – and it can be as silly or as sophisticated as you like. From themes such as ‘ballroom’ and ‘winter wonderland’ to ‘the naffest Christmas jumpers’, choose one and give your team plenty of notice to get their outfit sorted. There’s bound to be a load of photo opportunities – the results of which you can attach in the next company newsletter!

The Christmas party is an ideal time to show your appreciation for the hard graft your team has put in throughout the year. Recognise individuals as well as the workforce as a whole, and think of a few heartfelt and funny words to say. You could even include a mini prize-giving ceremony, including awards such as “Tidiest Desk” and “Most Punctual”!

“...show your appreciation for the hard graft your team has put in throughout the year. Recognise individuals as well as the workforce as a whole...”

A spoonful of fun and games The team that plays together, stays together! Games are a great way of getting colleagues to interact – just make sure they’re both fun and inclusive, and that they’re organised prior to the event, not during!

Motoring

“The current Kuga is smart enough and has a generally reliable history, although it is starting to come over as a tad dated – but at least it’s a safe car.”

T

he Kuga came on to the scene in 2008. Built in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive it was Ford’s response to SUVs, such as the Nissan Qashqai. It was also built to challenge more established 4x4s, such as the Honda CR-V. While it is no rocket ship, the Kuga 1.5T Ecoboost, on test here, does pick up pace fairly well (0-62mph in 9.7s) and feels particularly nippy around town. Its manual six-speed gearbox has a positive, smooth, action and the Ford delivers a relaxing, yet well-ordered ride at low speeds. The steering is light and direct – and this makes city driving and parking a breeze. Alas, there is far too much din in the road and wind noise department for the Kuga to be a serious motorway vessel. Safety is first-rate, though, with side and curtain airbags helping it achieve a five-star Euro NCAP crash-test result. Inside, the Kuga is quite spacious in the front, but its plunging roofline intrudes

on headroom for taller passengers in the rear. Legroom for anyone approaching six-feet tall is also limited, however it’s a fine area for kids to sit comfortably. The 406-litre boot is bigger than the Ford Focus’ 316-litre offering – making the loading of a bulky pushchair and the weekly supermarket shopping even less of a hassle. As alluded to earlier, the Kuga’s key rival is the Nissan Qashqai, with other opponents including the Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan. All of their boots are even bigger than the Ford’s by some margin. In fairness, though, the Ford Kuga Zetec 1.5T EcoBoost makes a good buy. It offers a decent mix of performance and size for families looking for a school-run-mobile. It is also front-wheel-drive - and this variant is really what you should try and get, unless you are desperate for 4x4 traction and off-road ability. Front-wheel-drive Kugas are a little bit cheaper to run than the fourwheel-drive versions and, if buying used, may well have been better cared for. The current Kuga is smart enough and has a generally reliable history, although it is starting to come over as a tad dated – but at least it’s a safe car. Fortunately, we won’t have too long to wait for a fresh First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups
