Welcome to the September issue So, here we are at the start of the new school year for many children across the area. It’s an exciting time to catch up with what friends have been doing over the holidays as well as a little daunting for new beginnings, be that the ﬁrst days at primary school or the move onto secondary education. Parents will enjoy the normality of the routine but long for the freedom of the holidays, it’s only a few weeks until half term! For me September is a great month as we usually go on holiday and my husband and I also celebrate our wedding anniversary, so there’s lots to look forward to in the Hammond household. In this issue we are helping you get rid of or at least work to banish the holiday excesses with hair repair from the sunshine and a few simple tricks to help you shed a few pounds. As winter will soon be here now is a great time to be prepared and we are oﬀering our tips on getting ready and hopefully saving yourself some money too!

2017 Launch weekend at South Lincs Leisure

Pathway cleared by Pride team A popular shortcut in Holbeach which had become overgrown and litterstrewn has been transformed as part of SHDC’s successful Pride in South Holland campaign. A total of 32 bags of litter and trimmings were collected from an alleyway in Hallgate by South Holland District Council’s Pride team last week. Local residents were extremely grateful for the clean-up work and thanked members of the team with cakes, drinks and sausage rolls. A spokesperson for South Holland District Council said: “We have a monitoring officer who identifies sites across the district and suggested that the alleyway was in need of a tidy up. “The Pride in South Holland campaign has given us extra resources to carry out this kind of work.” The Pride in South Holland campaign was launched in 2014 to clean up the district and has achieved notable success. The Pride team are currently targeting public land in the district which has become littered. Officers will continue to monitor sites across South Holland and are also keen to hear from members of the public about areas in need of a clean. This September the Butterﬂy Hospice will be hosting its annual Big Bike Ride to raise funds to provide end of life care for South East Lincolnshire. Our service is free to those who need it and can only continue to do this through the generosity of our sponsors, small and large, who enable our patients to die in peaceful surroundings with dignity and respect. Our event has a choice of distances, and all without a hill to climb, the Big Bike Ride can provide an option for families, intermediate cyclists and the more competitive among you who fancy a challenge. The 9 mile route from Boston and Langrick along the River Witham is ideal

for all the family, including children who are proficient riders. For those who fancy testing their fitness and stamina, the 33 mile route from Lincoln to Boston (again following the River Witham) may offer the perfect challenge. The Butterfly Hospice will be happy to assist with transporting riders and cycles for a mere £2.50 donation! Which leaves our third and ultimate bike route for the ultra-fit competitor, a whopping 66 miles starting at BostonLincoln-Boston! All routes finish at Boston Town Football Club, Tattershall Road, Boston PE21 9LP and follow the River Witham

NEWS Youngsters enjoy extreme sports day Youngsters enjoyed gravity-defying displays by renowned BMX riders and skaters at an extreme sports day which could become a regular event. A BMX and Skate Jam was held at Spalding town skatepark on August 2 attracting scores of children from all over the district. The event was the brainchild of Cllr Pete Williams who used his designated ward budget to fund the occasion. Other councillors and Tulip Radio also chipped in and hired BMX, Skateboard and Scooter group Team Extreme. They brought three-time British Champion skater Doug Peel Yates, BMX rider Declan Brooks, scooter rider Archie Cole and skater Danny Aldridge who performed jaw-dropping displays and held coaching sessions. Youngsters also put their skills to the test in competitions to win vouchers from Gibbons Cycles. Cllr Williams, who represents Spalding St Paul’s ward, said: “It was great to see so many young people having a great time and I would like thank Extreme Sport for coming along and putting on such a fantastic show - some of their stunts were incredible. “They provided crash helmets for the kids and were extremely professional. I’d also like to thank David Norton from Springfield’s for donating barriers. “Although this started out as my idea, by the end it became a real community event. Hopefully we can make it an annual occasion.” South Holland Councillors have designated ward budgets which they use to help all manner of community groups and causes across the district. £86k boost

Shoppers at Lincolnshire Co-op have raised over £86,000 for two health charities which will help provide vital services. The huge sum was raised by Dividend card holders between March and May for local branches of Rethink Mental Illness, a provider of health services for people affected by severe mental illness and Headway, a charity providing much needed support to people affected by brain injury. Each charity was given a £43,000 cheque by Lincolnshire Co-op’s Head of Pharmacy Alastair Farquhar at a presentation at Newland Pharmacy in Lincoln. “It’s a fantastic amount and will make such a difference to the people we support and their families,” said Headway Lincolnshire Trustee Jane Reams. “Brain injuries are a hidden disability so having our logo in Lincolnshire Co-op stores has hopefully raised the proﬁle of Headway and what we do to support people who have them.” Rethink Mental Illness Head of Corporate Partnerships James Fletcher said: “We are thrilled that Lincolnshire Co-op has raised over £43,000 for our work with people affected by mental illness and their carers. “This funding will do a huge amount to provide support to people in communities across Lincolnshire and the East Midlands.” According to Headway’s Information and Support Worker Ann-Marie Smith, the charity will use the £43,000 they received to fund training, support groups and social days out for members.

“Our charity is all about showing that life doesn’t stop after a brain injury, and this donation will help us prove that,” said AnnMarie. Headway volunteer Hilary Liddle was also in attendance. Having sustained brain damage when she was 19 that was left undiagnosed for 34 years, she now uses her time to support others. “I found Headway soon after I was told I had brain damage and now I volunteer so others can get the help I didn’t get for all those years,” she said. The Community Champions scheme is one of the ways that Lincolnshire Co-op’s gives back to the community. Every time a member shops at an outlet using their dividend card, a donation goes to the chosen champion at that time. Stores are currently raising money for Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire Wildlife Trusts. Healthwatch Lincolnshire - Statement with regards to announcement by NHS to close East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre at Glenﬁeld Hospital, Leicester On behalf of families in Lincolnshire, the recent announcement by NHS to close the East Midlands Heart Centre at Glenﬁeld Hospital in Leicester, has raise some serious concerns. We are hearing from families who highly rate this service, believing they owe their child’s life to it. Complaints to BBC

Complaints about the media Complaints about radio or television, including cable and satellite You may wish to complain about a radio or television programme because you believe that it: ❖ could be harmful ❖ is offensive, for example, in the way it portrays sex or violence ❖ is unfair to you or to an association or corporate body ❖ infringes on your privacy ❖ contains errors of fact ❖ is not impartial on matters of public policy or matters of industrial or political controversy ❖ contains inappropriate commercial references ❖ may have a harmful effect on viewers under the age of 18. Depending on the nature of the complaint, you may wish the television or radio company to do one of the following: ❖ respond to your complaint personally, explaining why the broadcaster took the action they did and why the broadcaster thought it was justiﬁed and, where appropriate, apologising and explaining how the problem

will be put right in the future ❖ correcting inaccuracies on air in, or at the start of, a future programme ❖ apologising on air. Speedy apologies can occur when the broadcaster realises quickly that s/he is wrong and wishes to correct the mistake ❖ publish or broadcast a full retraction, which may include an apology, for the mistake. This is rare and usually only happens after an investigation by Ofcom which finds against the broadcaster, or after legal action which finds against the broadcaster, or after very strong public pressure. Complaints direct to the company concerned Always consider contacting the broadcaster first, as this gives the broadcaster the opportunity to respond, which may resolve the issue. Contact details of broadcasters can be found on the Ofcom website. If you are not satisfied with the response of the broadcaster, you may want the Regulator to deal with your complaint, you can make your complaint direct to Ofcom. Complaints to Ofcom must be made within certain time limits. If your complaint is about a programme on BBC radio or television, commercial radio or television, or cable or satellite television, you could first telephone, or write to, the company concerned. If your complaint is about a radio or television advertisement, you can complain to the Advertising Standards Authority. If your complaint is about BBC national

Checklists, timers, and parental supervision can help overcome homework problems.

TERRIBLE TWO’S! There’s nothing more embarrassing than your toddler having a tantrum in the supermarket. It’s not easy being two. You want to be independent, but you can’t quite manage that zip; you want juice but mum says it’s teatime; you want to explain something but just don’t have the words yet. The result? A tantrum: screaming, crying, shouting, kicking, throwing things – and a very embarrassed mum if you’re out in public. Dealing with a tantrum The best way to deal with a tantrum is to stay calm and ignore it, which is obviously a lot easier to say than do, especially if you’re in a public place! Your toddler’s meltdown is a cry for attention, so if you can absolutely refuse to give any attention – including shouting or negotiating – then it will die down more quickly. Stay calm and carry on with what

you were doing – chatting to a friend, shopping or whatever – and check to make sure your little one is safe every couple of minutes. Never give in It’s really important never to give in to the demand that caused the tantrum as it will teach them that having a meltdown gets you what you want. That’s a recipe for more tantrums. It’s tempting in the supermarket to say ‘ok, ok, I’ll buy those sweets if you’ll just stop crying and screaming’ just to stop the embarrassment, but stand ﬁrm. You may think others are judging you for having a screaming toddler, but they are probably just relieved they’ve passed that stage or have left their kids at home. Most likely they’ll admire your refusal to give in. Once the tantrum is over When your child begins to calm down, talk to them in a low voice, but don’t

try to pick them up (unless they are in danger) and reassure your child that they will be fine: “Naming the emotion can also help here. Say, ‘I know you’re angry/upset because X happened, but you’re okay, we’ll sort it out. Mummy is here’.” Don’t try negotiating or reasoning – there’s no point. And don’t punish them after a tantrum, either: move swiftly on and give them lots of positive attention as soon as it’s over, without referring to the tantrum. Give your toddler your full attention and talk to them warmly as if nothing has happened. If you can find ways to notice and reward good behaviour, your little one is more likely to stay calm for longer. How to avoid a tantrum The best way to deal with a tantrum is to avoid it in the first place – sometimes easier said than done. • Are they hungry or tired?

• Try not to rush them all the time, especially when trying to leave the house in the morning. • Are you saying ‘no’ a lot? Sometimes we have to say no (‘no TV now, it’s bedtime’) but check if you’re saying it as an automatic response to their requests because it makes your life easier. If there isn’t a good reason for saying no (‘can I do ﬁnger painting?’), ﬁnd ways to say yes sometimes. • Give them a choice within a choice. So, rather than saying ‘hold my hand when we’re crossing the road please’, say ‘would you like to hold my hand or the buggy?’ • Learn to spot your child’s triggers. Some children have tantrums when they feel anxious, if they’re worried you’re leaving without them, or if their coat zip isn’t quite pulled up to the right level. Deal with the underlying problem to avoid the tantrum.

Shift the Holiday Excess

fter the summer of BBQs and Pimms we all start to think about getting back to healthy eating and ﬁtness. Here are our easy tips on how to make small changes in your life: Get rid of the leftovers. Whatever sweets and treats you have left get rid of them! Whether it’s giving them away, freezing them or just throwing them out. The last thing we all need it one more biscuit! Buddy Up. Having support from a friend, family member, co-worker or working with a personal trainer can provide that extra support and accountability to get you going. Set goals that focus on the behaviour rather than the outcome. Instead of setting a goal of losing 5 lbs, set 3 small goals that will lead to the weight loss. For example, doing 3 exercise classes every week, bringing your lunch to work every

day, and swapping out your evening snack for a bowl of fruit. Determine your ‘value to change.’ Take a moment to sit down and think about the real reasons this change is important to you and write those things down. When you’re feeling discouraged, which is inevitable for most of us, take a look at that list and remember why it’s important to you. Take it one step at a time. Although high motivation and energy is great, the key here is that you want it to last long-term, not just for a month. A diet that you can only follow for 2-3 weeks isn’t going to make a huge difference in the grand scheme of it all. Each week pick 1 diet change and incorporate new ones in as you get comfortable with the last. For example, once you get into routine of having a healthy breakfast before leaving the house, then focus on bringing your lunch to work during the week. Attacking it

Mayonnaise Mayonnaise is an excellent ingredient for treating dry hair at home. It contains lots of protein that will help make your hair soft and shiny. • Measure out one cup of full-fat mayonnaise. Apply a thick layer of it on slightly damp hair and scalp. • Massage the mayonnaise into your scalp and then work it through your hair to the ends. • Cover your hair and head with a plastic cap for about an hour. Rinse and then shampoo and condition.

Eggs Eggs are also very helpful for dry and damaged hair. A good source of protein and lecithin, eggs help strengthen and repair damaged and lifeless hair by adding moisture, shine, and texture to it. • Whip an egg white thoroughly along with two tablespoons of lukewarm water. • Apply the mixture to your damp hair and scalp and massage with your ﬁngertips in a circular motion for

15 minutes. Then shampoo your hair with cool water. Do this once or twice a week, depending on the condition of your hair.

Beer Beer works as an excellent hair conditioner. The protein in beer helps repair damaged hair cuticles and nourish hair follicles, which in turn makes your hair shiny and smooth. • Shampoo your hair as usual and then spray a small amount of beer onto your hair. Allow your hair to dry on its own. When it is dry, your hair will look smooth and shiny. • You can also spray beer onto your hair before blow drying or styling your hair. Note: The smell of beer will not remain on your hair if you let your hair dry naturally.

Bananas Bananas are another excellent ingredient for treating extremely dry and damaged hair. The high potassium and moisture content in bananas prevents split ends, and softens and improves the elasticity of your hair. • Mash one ripe or overripe banana and spread it thoroughly on your hair,

from the roots to the ends. Leave it on for up to an hour and then rinse your hair with lukewarm water. • Alternatively, mix one ripe or overripe banana, one tablespoon of almond oil and two tablespoons of honey. Apply this hair mask on your hair thoroughly. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse well with lukewarm water.

Vinegar Vinegar helps remove built-up residue left by shampoos and other products, which is one of the main causes of dry hair. Vinegar also helps restore the natural pH level of the scalp and prevents itching and dandruff, two common problems associated with dry hair. • Mix one-half cup of vinegar with one cup of water. Use the solution to rinse your hair after washing it. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes and then rinse it out well. This remedy should be used only once a week. Note: Along with regular vinegar, you can also use apple cider vinegar to treat dry hair.

PULL OUT YOUR DEBIT CARD – DO YOU HAVE A WINNER? A debit card reveals where you bank; and mistakes there are a plenty. Do you pay a monthly fee? If so, work out its annual cost (£15/month = £180) and then ask yourself if the ‘extras’ the bank gives are worth this. If not, cancel it. Plus, if you were ﬂogged it or told you had to have it, you may be able to reclaim all packaged bank account fees (see www. mse.me/reclaimpackagefees). Does your bank make you happy? Fresh berry Tarts Ingredients 175g (6oz) plain ﬂour Pinch of salt 1tbsp caster sugar 100g (3½ oz) chilled butter, cut into slivers 1 egg yolk, plus 2tbsp cold water For the ﬁlling: 16tbsp strawberry, raspberry or blueberry fruit conserve or jam (2 tbsp per tart) About 60g (2oz) fruit per tart: strawberries, raspberries or blueberries Crème fraîche, to serve Equipment: 8 x 10-12cm (4in) tart tins Greaseproof paper Baking beans

To make the pastry: Put the flour, salt and sugar in a food processor then add butter and pulse to a fine crumb. Add egg yolk and water and mix to a firm dough. Shape into a flat rectangle, then wrap in cling film and chill for 30 mins. Roll out pastry big enough to cut out five rounds easily, (3mm/¼in thick, or less). Cut out rounds just a little bigger than the tins. Line tins and trim edges. Knead trimmings and roll pastry again large enough to line three more tins. Prick pastry base and sides with a fork. Chill while oven heats up to gas mark 6 or 200°C. Line each pastry case with a square of greaseproof paper.

Put in baking beans. Bake blind, on a shelf near the bottom of the oven, for 10 mins. Take out beans and paper and return to oven for 5 mins. Spread 2 tbsp of conserve in each tart. Return tarts to the oven for 15 mins. Cool in tins, then on a wire rack. When ready to serve, cut strawberries into wedges and arrange on top, or spoon on raspberries or blueberries. Dredge with icing sugar. Serve with crème fraîche.

INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp. butter 2 garlic cloves 3 x 400g cans plum tomatoes 500ml vegetable stock 5 soft sun dried tomatoes in oil 1tsp. sugar 125g pot fresh basil pesto 142ml pot soured cream

In a large plan, heat 1 tbsp. of butter (or oil if you prefer) and then crush the garlic cloves and add to the pan. Do this on a low heat for roughly 3 minutes until the garlic has softened. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and the canned tomatoes. Once you have done this, add the sugar, stock and seasoning. Turn up the heat and bring the soup mixture to a simmer. Let it simmer for 10 minutes until the tomatoes have broken down then take off the heat. With a stick blender, whizz the whole mixture together. Add half the sour cream and continue to use to stick blender. Make sure to taste as you go to adjust the seasoning or alternatively add more sugar if you prefer. When it is all blended, serve the soup into bowls.

Malteser Squares INGREDIENTS 250g Chocolate Digestive Biscuits 200g milk chocolate 100g butter 3tbsp Golden syrup 225g Maltesers

Break the biscuits in a bowl until they are small crumbs and place this to one side. In a separate bowl over a pan of boiling water, melt the chocolate and the butter. When they have become soft add the golden syrup and mix together. Once it is completely melted, remove the bowl from the stove and add the biscuit crumbs. Once this is entirely mixed together with a wooden spoon, add in the Maltesers and mix it together again. Place the mixture into a tin lined with baking paper (so it doesn’t get stuck), place the tin in the fridge. After half an hour take the tin out cut the mixture into square (sizes of your choice) and serve!

ou may think we are crazy to even suggest thinking about winter now but as soon as the weather changes people will be switching on the heating and stocking up on fuel. Beat the rush and order yours now and you may even save yourself some money, after all most costs are based on supply and demand! Think about • Even if your oil tank is half full top up now so you have enough to see you through the whole winter • Have a boiler service before the cold weather hits so you don’t spend a few miserable nights wrapped up without any heating • If you have an open ﬁre or log burner, stock up now on wood, I have been caught out before restocking too late and my usual supplier having run out of wood! You may ﬁnd whilst the weather is nice fuel supply companies and plumbers are less busy and so there may be the opportunity to use your powers of negotiation to get a good deal!

Are there Advantages to Having a Log Burner? More and more people are turning to wood burning ﬁreplaces and stoves to supply their heat over conventional forms of heating. But what are the real advantages of a wood burning ﬁreplace? They’re much more cost effective The price of electricity and gas is shooting sky high and showing no signs of stopping – or even slowing. It’s a sad fact that many

people are seeing heating their homes now as more of a luxury than a necessity because of energy prices, but by switching to a ﬁreplace you can save up to 80% if you currently use electric heating and over 50% if you use gas heating.

It’s independent energy Having to rely on external sources to heat your home isn’t ideal – especially with the increasingly violent weather patterns we’ve been experiencing. Log burning ﬁreplaces require no electricity or gas to run; just wood to burn.

largely due to not getting the chimney swept often enough. Other contributing factors are: • Burning fuel that is inappropriate for the appliance. • Burning fuel with too high a moisture content (logs should be less than 20% water). • Overnight burning / slumbering ﬁre please don’t do this, it can be dangerous and costly and is highly polluting. • Unsuitable or inefﬁcient stove or chimney.

Did you know some Insurance companies will no longer pay out for chimney fire damage unless the flue has been swept and maintained by a professional chimney sweep who can issue a valid certificate of sweeping recognised by the insurance companies themselves. Also, if the fire brigade is called out due to a chimney fire and it is proven that the chimney has not been maintained the local council can bill you for the call out, and this has been known to be up to £2000 per fire crew!

Boston Samaritans are looking for more volunteers The service we offer.

Each call is 100% about the caller and their emotional needs and whilst on any call, even when on very rare occasions it affects us personally, we as Samaritans remain non-judgemental and focused on the caller needs. After any emotionally challenging call the Samaritans and the organisation as a whole are fantastic at supporting and caring for all its volunteers. I really can’t make this clear enough - I have never felt so supported as I have as a volunteer at the Samaritans.

Boston Samaritans was founded in 1972 and is a small group of 21 volunteers who operate from a centre in Main Ridge. Our volunteers come from Boston, Skegness, Sleaford, Spalding, Spilsby, Woodhall Spa and Holbeach. The Samaritans offer a 24 hour service but listening volunteers in Boston answer the ‘phone and text messages for a few hours every evening as part of the national coverage. Volunteers answer calls from people feeling suicidal, suffering from depression, or who need to talk through their problems.

What do our volunteers say about the service?

I feel very privileged to be a Samaritan Listening Volunteer. I get to see a side of society that would have been totally off my radar and feel I have a broader perspective on life just by volunteering with the Samaritans. There are times when, after taking a particularly emotional call, I can think to myself - ‘if I do nothing else this year other than what I have just done I will be ok with that’. Not all calls are like that but sometimes you feel that by being a Samaritan you have made a small difference to the world.

I volunteered because I had been down in my twenties and I knew the importance of talking about my experiences and how helpful it was for me

People think Samaritans have perfect lives - we don’t. And we’re from all walks of life

Fiat Tipo

All things considered... the all-new Fiat Tipo is mediocre to drive and its cabin quality isn’t the best. But it does look good; it has bags of room; it’s comfortable and it comes loaded with kit. So even though 2016’s Fiat Tipo has a few negative points, it still represents good value for money.

have a soft spot for Fiat. Okay, I’m mean to be objective – but you always remember your first car, right? And mine was a Fiat Panda. There’s no logic involved here – it’s pure emotion – and so, for me, the Fiat brand is synonymous with 1988 and my glorious first days of true motoring independence. The same year I got that Panda, a new Fiat was unleashed – the Tipo. The five-door hatch was boxy but appealed to the media and the masses, winning the European Car of the Year award in 1989. Sadly, the adoration didn’t last and the Fiat Tipo went to the great scrapyard in the sky when it was replaced by the Fiat Bravo and Brava in ‘95. But Fiat may well have been listening to The Stone Roses at some point – particularly the track ‘I Am The Resurrection’. This title must have become stuck somewhere in the spirit of Fiat because here we are today with a brand new Fiat Tipo for 2016. Yes, the car is back from the dead and aims to replicate the early success of the former model. If truth be told, the Fiat Tipo is no stranger to being brought back to life – the moniker was first seen on cars over 100 years ago. And in 2016, Fiat is determined to keep the name going again by going down the Daciaesque value-for-money route. The Italian auto-maker is blunt about its intentions: the all-new Fiat Tipo is a car without frills and, even though it’s more or less emulating Dacia’s marketing strategy, its real competitor is the likes of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback. Now, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the all-new Fiat Tipo is, in my opinion, better looking than the Czech-made car. This is due to its elegant nose design, and neater overall shape. The Fiat Tipo’s price begins from a remarkably low £12,995 on the road, which is bound to shake up the British motoring market. The fresh Fiat Tipo is hitting our shores in September in fivedoor hatchback and ‘Station Wagon’ (estate) guises. The body forms are indistinguishable from the rear doors forward and the outside 36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

PROS ‘N’ CONS ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠ of the Tipo really doesn’t ooze ‘budget’ by any means. It’s only when you step inside that the ‘no frills’ element kicks-in. Some of the all-new Fiat Tipo’s switchgear is from the Fiat 500 range’s parts bin – as is the steering wheel. These components of the car feel good to the touch – it’s the plastics at knee-height on the doors and the dash that give the game away. The synthetic material is so cheap that it sounds hollow and scratches if you run your fingernails lightly over it. But, as with many things in life, there’s light and shade – and the Fiat Tipo’s factory-fitted kit tips the car back into the good books. All 2016 Fiat Tipo models receive six airbags, electric windows, DAB digital radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. We tested the flagship ‘High’ trim version (equivalent to Fiat’s ‘Lounge’ spec) of the Fiat Tipo hatchback at its launch in Turin. Equipment at this level includes sat-nav with TomTom LIVE services, climate control, a rear view camera and 17-inch alloy wheels - pushing the price-tag up to £17,995. The car we drove came with Fiat’s well-known 120hp 1.6-litre Multijet II diesel power unit - but the range also offers the choice of a 1.3-litre oil-burner and 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines. Behind the wheel, it’s evident that the all-new Fiat Tipo has been put together so that it delivers comfort over everything else. Turin’s pot-hole ridden roads were a walkin-the-park for the Tipo hatchback – its soft suspension enabling the car to sail over them without any discomposure in the cabin. Point the all-new Fiat Tipo’s nose into a corner rapidly, though, and body roll is perceptible. From a power point of view, the all-new Fiat Tipo’s 1.6-litre oil-burning unit is nothing exceptional, but the car’s six-speed manual transmission impresses with its positive-shift action. In lower gears lag is obvious and, while it’s a quiet cruiser, things become rowdy from 3,000rpm onwards. It tugs well, though, once that rev range is reached and is swift enough for the class of car. Its carbon dioxide emissions of 98g/km are just below the Skoda Rapid Spaceback, which in 1.6 TDI CR 115 SE Tech guise emits 99g/km of CO2. Pricing is similar - the Skoda being just £675 cheaper at £17,320. The all-new Fiat Tipo gets things right again when it comes to room. It’s even lengthier than a far more expensive Volkswagen Golf, so legroom is bountiful for rear seat occupants. The slanting rooﬂine cuts into head space a little at the back, but this will only concern passengers over 6ft tall.
