NEWS In a historic home far, far away…. Harry Potter joins the Dark Knight as the Force Awakens this summer Street Parties to celebrate Queen’s 90th Birthday – There’s still time! South Holland District Council is supporting communities across the district which want to get involved in celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s II 90th birthday. Local communities are being encouraged to hold their own lunches and street parties on 12th June 2016. To help people set these up, the government has revised and re-launched its street party guidance, which can be found at www.gov.uk/ government/publications/your-guideto-organising-a-street-party If your local community are planning on celebrating this special occasion then please let us know and we can help promote and showcase your activities. If you are having a large event then the Council’s community development team can provide support and advice.

Launching the Festival on Wednesday 27th July will be a whole day of Harry Potter

From spending a day with Harry Potter to a double bill of Star Wars and Batman, one of the UK’s top outdoor cinemas is back this summer for five days and nights of movie magic. The giant screen returns to England’s greatest Elizabethan house in July as Lincolnshire’s Burghley House again becomes the spectacular backdrop for an outdoor cinema in the picturesque South Gardens. Among the returning cinematic favourites is the ‘Best of British’ BBQ and film themed drinks, plus the chance to hire Burghley deckchairs, while the line-up of movies is better than ever. The 2016 Burghley Film Festival features some of the biggest hits of the last year, including a nightime screening of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’, along with daytime sessions of children’s favourites and Disney classics, such as ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ and ‘Peter Pan’. Launching the Festival on Wednesday 27th July will be a whole day of Harry Potter, with ‘The Philospher’s Stone’

and ‘Prisoner of Azkaban’ during the daytime session and ‘The Deathly Hallows’ Part 1 and Part 2 during the evening. If that leaves you shaken, but not stirred, there’s always the return of James Bond in potentially Daniel Craig’s last outing as 007 in ‘Spectre’ on the Friday night – or for a real weekend treat, how about ‘Hairspray’ followed by ‘Mamma Mia’ on Saturday night? For a fitting final night finale, ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ takes Burghley to a galaxy far, far away before Batman lights up the night sky in ‘The Dark Knight’. In between, movie fans can enjoy everything from Rom-Coms ‘Notting Hill’ and ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ on Thursday 28th July to thrills and spills aplenty in ‘Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation’ on Friday 29th. Daytime family screenings range from ‘Puss in Boots’ to ‘WALL-E’.

Pinchbeck Carnival Our carnival this year is over the weekend of 10th – 12th June and once again takes place on The Rotten Row playing field. Our theme is, ‘90 Glorious Years’. On Friday evening we have bingo from 6.30pm in the marquee with eyes down at 7pm. On Saturday the parade leaves Wimberley Way at 12noon going down Rotten Row, Brownlow Crescent, Bear Lane, Knight Street and back down Rotten Row to the playing field arriving about 12.45pm. Road junctions will be closed as the parade passes and then re-opened. It will be led by our ‘Royalty’ float with our very own Carnival Queen, Annie Kinsella and Princesses Teigan Burrill and Katelyn Brocklehurst. The carnival will be officially opened by the Spalding Tulip Queen, Ella Holbrook and her deputy, Monika Biernacka. Admission is £3 for adults and £1.50 for children. Excellent value as it covers both the day and evening entertainment. Our main arena act is the Welsh Axemen who will perform two different thirty minute

shows which will include chainsaw carving, chainsaw races, underhand block racing and springboard tree climbs. Also in the arena we have Mels Zumba, the Breaston Highlanders, Abbey High Fliers, Dennis Hannant MBE and a display of Classic cars. Compères for the day are Jan and Chris from Tulip Radio. Weather permitting there will be a flypast by the Spitfire and Hurricane from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. There are also children’s rides, stalls, refreshments and a licensed bar. In the marquee we have a fancy dress competition. There will also be balloon modelling by John Derbyshire. Both children and adults can enter the handicrafts competition. As well as crafts, needlework, painting, flower arranging and photographs there are also some cooking categories. From about 5.30pm there will be live music in the marquee from Henry Birkett a country rock singer followed by a disco. On Sunday there is a united church service of worship in the marquee at 10.30am. From 11.30am we are asking everyone to come along to our Picnic in the Park to celebrate

Historic exhibition extended Society and lived at Ayscoughfee Hall. Over 200 families are listed, some of whose histories are traced back to the eleventh century. The exhibition also features an index of names which visitors are able to search, and also to order facsimile copies of pages from the Society, which they hope will help genealogical researchers visiting Spalding. The exhibition has been co-curated by Dustin Frazier Wood, Spalding Gentlemen’s Society Librarian and Julia Knight, Museum Officer at Ayscoughfee Hall.

A historic exhibition at Ayscoughfee Hall, which features an ancient local manuscript, has been extended until July due to popular demand. Since February the Spalding museum has displayed a range of items belonging to the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society, focussed on a recently acquired manuscript. The free exhibition will now be continued for three months, following much positive feedback. Cllr Gary Taylor, SHDC portfolio holder for Community Development, said: “Anyone who has a passion for local history

will be fascinated by this exhibition and I’m glad to hear that it has been extended.” The 18th century manuscript is titled ‘Armes and Memoires of ffamilies in Lincolnshire’ and was compiled by Maurice Johnson of Ayscoughfee Hall. The striking green and gold document depicts the genealogies of a number of renowned Lincolnshire families. It is believed to date from the 1710s or 1720s and features beautifully written and illustrated entries for various local families, presumably known to Maurice Johnson, who founded Spalding Gentlemen’s

he recent Police & Crime Commissioner elections returned a 17.5% turnout in South Holland, but one would have to assume that the In / Out Referendum on Europe will be one of the highest in recent times. Many people have spoken to me about the referendum and clearly many are still grasping for some facts to base their decision on when the election comes on June 23rd. I have trawled a number of websites, but the BBC’s Reality Check is probably the most useful and below you will find just a few of the big issues from both sides and Reality Check’s conclusions. I hope this may help in making your final decision.

The claim: The UK exports five times as much to the EU as it does to the Commonwealth. Reality Check verdict: Yes we do. The UK’s export of goods and services to the Commonwealth in 2014 were worth £47.8bn. The comparable figure for the EU was £228.9bn. It’s worth noting that the UK does plenty of business with countries that are part of neither group for example, we sell twice as much to the USA as we do to our biggest EU partner, Germany. The claim: Priti Patel says the UK has no say over the amount of regulation coming from the EU. She also says the UK is constantly being outvoted. Reality Check verdict: The UK does have a say over regulations affecting small businesses, both through its MEPs and government ministers who vote at the Council, where they have been on the “winning side” 86.7% of the time in recent years. The Claim: “If we want to reform human rights laws in this country, it isn’t the EU we should leave but the ECHR and the jurisdiction of its court.” Reality Check verdict: If the UK wanted to stay in the EU but leave the ECHR, the European Commission would have to decide whether that meant the UK had too little respect for human rights to stay in the Union. Nobody has tried it before and lawyers disagree about what the Commission’s conclusion would be. The claim: Home Secretary Theresa May says: “Free movement makes it harder to control immigration, but it doesn’t make it impossible to control immigration.” Reality Check verdict: Free movement does make it harder to control immigration. Leaving the EU would not necessarily mean abandoning free movement and the government has not managed to meet its immigration ambitions even for non-EU migrants, over whom it has greater control. The claim: “We are giving £20bn a year or £350m a week to Brussels.” Reality Check verdict: We are not giving £20bn a year or £350m a week to Brussels - Britain pays £276m a week to the EU budget because of the rebate. The claim: Speaking on the Today Programme, Michael Gove said: “The EU is clear: it wants more power over our taxes and our banks. Sadly, we’ve surrendered our veto on these moves.” Reality Check verdict: Britain still has a veto over tax measures, but can be out-voted by other EU members on some issues that affect UK banks and financial institutions. The claim: Michael Gove said that if Britain left the European Union: “We would be part of a free trade zone that extends from Iceland to the Russian border…we would have full access to the European market but we would be free from EU regulation.” Reality Check verdict: Full access with no regulation may be Mr Gove’s hope but it looks impossible to deliver in practice. The claim: The Treasury’s analysis of costs and benefits of European membership says: “If we left the EU we’d

“This will be the biggest decision of our lifetime and our thanks to our great democracy it is yours to make. Good luck.” have to re-negotiate trade deals with over 50 other countries.” Reality Check verdict: Yes, the UK would have to renegotiate the current trade deals with non-EU countries. Some would be easier to secure than others. The claim: “If EU countries were to offer the UK significant access to the Single Market, they would certainly insist that the UK accepts the associated obligations and rules, as every other country has had to do.” Reality Check verdict: We’d certainly be able to negotiate access to EU markets after Brexit, but it’s hard to see other EU countries giving the UK a much better deal than everyone else. The claim: Migration from the EU has put huge pressure on public services, including the NHS. Boris Johnson, who’s campaigning for Vote Leave, said: “We get uncontrolled immigration, which puts unsustainable pressure on our vital public services” Reality Check verdict: There are no figures to show the exact cost to the NHS, but the 3 million EU citizens already here are likely to stay even if the UK leaves the EU. Finally, on a slightly more flippant note, my favourite and topical quote, pertinent to the South Holland area: The claim: “Lord’s Prayer - 66 words, 10 Commandments - 179 words, Gettysburg address - 286 words, EU regulations on the sale of cabbage - 26,911 words.” The verdict: Just under 2,000 words of regulations on the size and labelling of cabbages were repealed in 2009. Today there are no regulations specifically about cabbages.

So there you have it, just a few of the issues and I am sure by the time you read this you will have been deluged with information from both sides. This will be the biggest decision of our lifetime and our thanks to our great democracy it is yours to make. Good luck.

Weston Hills CofE Primary Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Term 6 is nearly upon us, and we are coming to the end of another academic year. Year 5&6 children have had their trip to London to visit the Houses of Parliament & go on the London Eye; a very educational and enjoyable day. Year 6 children have also been to the Church Schools Festival in Lincoln. Key Stage 2 SATs week has taken place, and results will be coming out towards the end of Term 6. Our Year 6 leavers will be attending taster days at their new secondary schools this term. 10th June will see us having a street party to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday – parents are welcome. 13th July is our Sports Day – we are hoping for good weather! Agilitas have organised several tournaments which our Year 3, 4, 5 & 6 children have participated in: Cricket (Year 6), Tennis (Year 3&4), and we still have a Rounders Competition for Year 6

“... trips for Year 3&4 children to Banham Zoo has taken place. A lovely day which the children and adults thoroughly enjoyed. Reception, Year 1 and 2 children have a visit arranged to the Parrot Zoo at Friskney.”

and Tri-Golf for Year 3/4 to look forward to. Our PTA have had their AGM and have organised very successful school discos. They have a family Bingo evening booked for Friday 17th June. End of year trips for Year 3&4 children to Banham Zoo has taken place. A lovely day which the children and adults thoroughly enjoyed. Reception, Year 1 and 2 children have a visit arranged to the Parrot Zoo at Friskney. Our extra curricular activities this term include Multi-Skills, Homework, Outdoor Learning, Boccia, Cricket, Athletics, Homework, Tennis, Tri-Golf, Cookery, Change4Life, Curling & Rounders.

Ayscoughfee Hall School April 21st saw a double celebration at Ayscoughfee Hall School. As well as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday, the school celebrated the opening of a brand new library. Largely funded by the hard work and generous donations of the P.T.F.A, the library has been redecorated and carpeted, houses smart, colourful new bookcases and a range of comfortable

seating, including two cosy ‘snugs’. Mr. Brian Hendry, ex parent and Vice Chairman of Governors, whose association with the school goes back fifty years, cut the ribbon to declare the library open and parents and children alike then had the opportunity to see the completed project for themselves.

Head teacher Mrs. Ogden thanked all those who had contributed directly or indirectly to the project, not least the children who had been invited to submit ideas themselves.

T

he Civic Society’s market art project sets out to celebrate Spalding’s market in its livestock heyday. There would have been a thousand sheep in the Sheepmarket, the jostle and bellowing of cattle in New Road, pigs in Red Lion Street, and a farmyard smell everywhere. Plus the May Hiring Fair (or ‘Statutes’), when shepherds, carters, dairymaids and cooks, thatchers and ploughboys poured into the town to offer themselves for hire for another twelve months. Our present market of fruit and veg., seat-pads and padlocks, fish and greetings cards is a very sedate affair by comparison. Seven years ago the Society launched the idea of a group of public art works for the town centre that would celebrate our market heritage through sculpture, mosaics, etc. But the ambition became a possibility only in 2013 with the arrival of arts organisation Transported and, through them, access to funding from the Arts Council. Working in partnership, Transported and the Society commissioned sculptor Joseph Hillier for the first work. Taking his cue from the Hiring Fair, Joseph came up with a trail of fourteen small bronzes (left) of people nearly all related in some way to the area’s present-day food production and processing. The bronzes are not just ‘life-like’, but are actual local people – from farmer to drainage engineer, vegetable-

Energy providers

MARTIN LEWIS

The big six energy providers – British Gas, EDF, Eon, Npower, Scottish Power and SSE – have now announced price cuts to their standard tariff

T

hese changes are piddly, paltry, tiny, irrelevant and, ultimately, ignorable. Even after these cuts of roughly £30 a year, without any question you are BEING RIPPED OFF – typically by over £300 a year. If you’re detecting a sense of frustration in my writing, you are correct. I’ve been banging on about this for over a decade, yet still 70% of the UK population are on these damn awful tariffs. So before I get into the “whats” and “hows”, let me prove why you need to listen.

1

IT’S QUICK AND EASY TO SWITCH Slashing the amount you pay for energy really isn’t difficult. It takes minutes to find your cheapest, then it’s switched over in 17 days. I got four newish members of my team to do a comparison and on average it took 5 minutes 52 seconds. Those who worry about switching, don’t – it’s the same pipes, gas, meter and safety – the only thing that changes is the price and customer service.

2

USE A COMPARISON SITE BUT DO IT THE RIGHT WAY As your saving and your cheapest depends on where you live and what you use, there’s no one winner. Plug your details into a comparison site and it’ll show your best deal. To do this, you need your address, your current tariff and your usage. The best usage to put in is your Kilowatt hours, if not that, then your annual cost, if not then monthly cost. If you don’t have any info – just guess!

Quick Q&A “I’ve only got electricity, can I save?” There are cheap deals that allow electricity-only switching. Someone on a standard tariff paying £1,000/year would pay about £750/year with the cheapest. Again, just do a comparison, same for economy 7.

While you may not get the perfect result, if you’re on a standard tariff you’ll save substantially. To do a comparison you can use my www. CheapEnergyClub.com or, alternatively, you can use any www.ofgem.gov.uk approved comparison site, but, if so, do watch for two things. - Ensure it searches all tariffs Some comparison sites by default will only show you the tariffs that they get paid for. This filters out some of the cheapest deals. Make sure when you’re doing a comparison you’ve selected the option to see all the results, that way you’ll get to see the best deals. - Beware personal projections if you’re on a fixed tariff When doing a comparison, most comparison sites follow the regulators’ guidance and show your ‘personal projection’, which is effectively your average energy cost over the next year. This is normally fine, but is nonsense for anyone on a fixed tariff ending within 12 months – something I’ve campaigned against, to little avail. For example, if your current fix costs £800 a year and ends in six months, and after you’ll then pay £1,200 a year, as you’ll be on the energy firm’s standard tariff, the personal projection say you’ll pay £1,000 in a year – the cost averaged over 12 months. So if the market’s cheapest deal is £900 a year, the results will tell you to switch and save £100. Yet do it now and for the first six months you’ll actually be paying more, not less. You need to see both prices to make a decision, which www.cheapenergyclub.

By Martin Lewis @moneysavingex pert co.uk does. Comparethemarket.com and energyhelpline.com have options to see both as well. - Check customer service feedback too. It’s not all about pure price, service counts. It may be worth paying a little more for one with a good service record; Ovo is relatively cheap for many people with a good track record. Most comparison sites include some service listings.

3

IF YOU DON’T WANT TO CHANGE SUPPLIER, CHANGE TARIFF. Many confuse changing tariffs with changing companies, but you don’t necessarily have to. For example, at the time of writing this, if you’re on Npower’s standard tariff, which on typical usage is £1,110/year, you can switch to its cheapest 12 month fix, which is actually one of the market’s cheapest at £781/year – saving £320. So at the very least do a comparison and if you really don’t want to switch (not a big deal, but some don’t like it) at least move to your supplier’s cheapest. It’s worth noting some firms also operate under more than one name, for example British Gas is also Scottish Gas and Sainsbury’s Energy. Also some big suppliers offer far cheaper deals via ‘collective switches’ through local councils or comparison sites. So you may find you can save £100s and stay just where you are – but never sign up to a collective switch that doesn’t offer a full market comparison as part of it.

“I’m on prepay (key or card meter) – can I switch?”

“I’m £100s in credit with my energy firm, will I get it back if I leave?”

Yes. Someone with typical use on a standard prepay tariff pays £1,163/ year - the cheapest is £1,050/year, so a comparison and switch will help. Yet a normal billed meter paying fixed monthly direct debits is far, far cheaper. So if you can, it’s also worth considering if you can change to a normal billed meter, where usage is measured, and you’re billed after.

It should give you this money once you’ve switched. Many do it automatically, but make sure you ask if not. They used to operate a ‘don’t ask, don’t get’ policy, so if you’ve switched previously, it may be worth calling your old supplier to check. If you’re in debt you can usually switch, unless the debt’s very large – though you still have to pay it back what you owe. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 19

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

This quantity of ingredients will be sufficient marinade for 4 drumsticks.

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Put chicken pieces into a large food bag Pour marinade into bag and ensure all the chicken is covered. Seal bag, making sure to remove most of the air so that the chicken has lots of contact with the marinade. Refrigerate for 1 hour or more before grilling.

Top Tip: This works well on ribs too! Marinade night before for the best results and it will be ready to grill when you get home from work.

Family life

It’s All Childs Play With Father’s Day celebrated this month in the UK, America and Canada, June is a time for making a special effort for the father figures in our life. Across the globe, children in homes, nurseries and schools will be lovingly making cards and gifts to let their dad’s know just how special they are. Wonderful as these glued and crafted creations are, you can’t beat the warm glow that you get from quality family time together. And this is the rub, as time is a rare commodity with many adults and children leading such busily planned lives. Although technology and mobile phones help keep us connected they also hamper our ability to talk with, listen to and notice our children. You only have to people watch to see the insulating bubbles created by an intimate or rapturous phone conversation. Spotting games on car journeys have been replaced with films and computer games such that the journey has become something to ‘get through’ rather than an exciting adventure in its own right.

Watch some families and you get the impression of family members orbiting each other like planets, or worse still distant solar systems!

Family Life

Working together

This got me thinking about just how important it is for children to “...our fathers, boug receive the anchored and undivided ht up on attention of a father figure. A thought mottos like ‘good th ings crystallised by having witnessed my come to those that wait’ husband and son working in unison or ‘nothing worth doing on an epic solar system homework ever came easy’...” project this weekend! Like any space mission they faced challenges, the biggest being how to get the lights in the papier Mache planets to shine through the layered paper? However, it was these challenges and their problem solving reminding potential that bought me of the importance of us them together as a team, experiencing and sitting with investigating, exploring and challenges and discomfort, as out discovering. In the case of my of adversity comes innovation. For our son’s homework, faced with the challenge fathers, bought up on mottos like ‘good of using the specially purchased battery things come to those that wait’ or ‘nothing powered lights without removing all the worth doing ever came easy’, this would layers of papier Mache, the solution was to not have been a problem but for children create a magical back lit wall, star studded nowadays, the speed and realism of with swirling pin pricked lights. The technology have created an expectation finished project was all the more dramatic of instant gratification and an anathema to and effective for this twist in design, boredom.

What then is the answer this Father’s Day?

By Sue Gascoyne sue@playtoz.co.uk Sue is a published author, trainer, educational consultant and therapeutic play practitioner. Author of ‘Geek Dad: Awesomely Geeky Projects and Activities for Dad’s and Kids to Share’ Ken Denmead explains ‘most “parenting” books aren’t about things you can do with your kids [but] things to do to your kids’. The answer lies in finding riveting activities that you can enjoy playing together.

Funky experiments Having just delivered training on the wonders of using messy play, everyday objects and natural treasures to bring science to life, I for one can vouch for the allure of

experiments. Let them help you recreate the vinegar and bicarbonate of soda volcano experiment, feigning shock and fright if you can, then experiment with how changing the volcano design affects the explosion. Why not change the sequence of adding the ingredients or freeze these before adding? Finally, jazz up painting by creating fizzy paint, with you guessed it, food colouring, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda!

Quality time Quality time with parents, particularly male role models

a rare commodity, activities like these are deliciously enriching and fun. From rough and tumble, to running about, fishing or cycling to car spotting, tinkering with an engine to the world of science it’s plain to see that it’s not just children who love the chance to play. Play is all about the process and experimenting with vinegar explosions or papier Mache, the process of play and fun was apparent. Whatever your plans this Father’s Day, make sure you make time for Dad’s to play!

GOLDEN MARGUERITE These wonderful flowers bloom in late spring/early summer and their appearance is definitely a sign summer is here. With their bright yellow petals and centres (considered to be shaped very similar to daisies) and foliage of a feathery silver, they are such a vibrant, refreshing welcome into summer. Relatively low maintenance, the Golden Marguerite requires welldrained soil and thrives in lots of sunlight. They are very often used for garden borders and make a lovely addition to any garden.

These shelves are great in a garage, to display plants/herbs in the garden or to give an industrial feel to an office.

SMART S

You will need: ❖ 2 sets of step ladders ❖ 5 wooden shelves (varying sizes can look great going from smallest at the top to largest at the bottom) ❖ 20 u shaped brackets and screws ❖ Drill

1 Coat your palms with a thin layer of moisturiser or oil. Look for something infused with a circulation-boosting ingredient, such as peppermint, pine oil, camphor, or rosemary. 2 Use long stroking motions. Slowly massage the sole of one foot with both thumbs, starting behind the toes and moving toward the heel. Apply extra pressure along the arch and at the ball of the foot, two places that are especially prone to tightness. 3 Grip the foot with both hands. Gently twist your hands from side to side as if you’re wringing a towel. This may help remove the pain that can develop after hours of standing. End the massage by gently pulling and releasing each toe. 4 Repeat on the other foot.

Pampering Your Feet

1. Bring down any swelling with a soak. Soak feet in a mixture of water, a dozen ice cubes, six drops of tea-tree oil, and rosemary leaves (or use a store-bought tea tree–oil soak). Submerge one foot for 30 seconds, remove from water, then rub vigorously with a towel. Repeat with the other foot, and keep soaking until the swelling subsides. While all soaks help soften skin, certain ones also exfoliate dead skin cells, making feet smoother. 2. Soften your feet with a scrub. Frequent exfoliating is not just about looking good: Thickly callused skin can crack, leading to pain and infections. Pumice-based pastes can swiftly eliminate scaly skin, keeping feet soft for longer. If you prefer scrubs, go for a salt scrub with added oils to help hydrate. Avoid razors and callus scrapers, which can break the skin and cause infection. 3. Hydrate the skin with a cream. Foot creams are generally thicker and more viscous than body formulas because they deliver more moisture. The best ones hydrate and soften with petrolatum, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter, so make sure one Gently does it of these is at the top of the ingredient list. North Norfolk ALKS BEACH W n sets l su View beautifu over the sea

P

ollywiggle Cottage is a charming 3 bedroom Victorian cottage in the popular coastal village of Heacham available for short breaks and holidays. Just over an hours drive away it really is the gateway to the beautiful North Norfolk coast. The cosy cottage built in 1882 sleeps 5 in 3 bedrooms (king, double & single) plus we have a cot for a baby. We welcome well behaved dogs and have tried to supply everything you will need for babies and pets

The Local Area

- travel cot, high chair, baby monitor, dog crate, dog bowls etc. On sunny days the south facing enclosed garden is a great place to relax with table and chairs for 6 as well as a BBQ. Or on those winter nights you can warm up in front of the open fire. There is also complementary wifi & parking for 2 vehicles. All prices include a full clean before and after your visit as well as linen and towels - you will just need your bikini and beach towels!

Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, Co-Op, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast.

Renault Kadjar 1.6 dCi 130 Signature Nav

The French-made Renault Kadjar is one rung higher up the greasy pole than many of its competitors.

Y

ou see, there are lots of Qashqai clones on the market, but the Kadjar genuinely shares the popular Nissan’s platform and power units. What’s more, the car is cheaper to buy than the fashionable Qashqai and has that extra sprinkling of French flair. The front-wheel-drive 1.6 dCi 130 Signature Nav, on test here, is impressive. The turbo-charged oil-burner starts out fairly meekly, but then things under the bonnet hot up, resulting in plenty of mid-range pull. This is satisfying because it means you don’t need to work the gears hard to utilise the clout on tap. Push the Renault into twisty country lanes and the car stays bonded to the tarmac. There’s a little bit of body roll noticeable, but it never disturbs ride comfort. In fact, the Kadjar arouses confidence in this sort of driving environment due to its consistently wellweighted steering. The brakes are excellent, although their urgency takes you by surprise on occasion. However, a capacity for quickly scrubbing-off-speed is no bad thing. The gearshift-action is a little heavy, and some diesel-din sneaks into the interior when the whip is cracked, but this Renault is not the sort of car bought by out-and-out driving enthusiasts. Unsurprisingly then, the Kadjar is comfy for a family-of-four and handles scarred, 32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

“Definitely more important than cabin toys, is a car’s safety prowess. And the Kadjar has layer upon layer of kit to keep you protected”. urban road surfaces well, due to its nicelycushioned suspension set-up. The boot is better than the Qashqai’s, in terms of load space, and it has the same ingenious flooring that can be elevated, dropped, or used as a partition to keep your possessions from tumbling about. Indeed, the Kadjar is a pleasant place to be, due, in no small part, to it having one of finest cabin’s in its class. From a tech point of view, the glass is just as full. The sat-nav system is a doddle and – in this flagship model – the car comes fully loaded with a top-quality Bose sound system, Bluetooth,

Price: £24,795 faux leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof. Definitely more important than cabin toys, is a car’s safety prowess. And the Kadjar has layer upon layer of kit to keep you protected. Equipment includes traffic sign recognition, lane-departure assist and even parking sensors at the front and the rear of the car. As mentioned, the Signature Nav is the top of the tree model, so unless you really need all the trimmings, you’ll enjoy the Kadjar just as much in its slightly lowerdown-the ladder ‘Dynamique’ guise. The car is still well-appointed and represents excellent value for money, whether bought outright on a PCP finance deal. To be honest, it’s hard to justify buying a Nissan Qashqai now that the Kadjar is on the scene. The car is good-looking, it’s great to drive, it has a bigger boot and its price-tag is lower. Unless you’re desperate to have the Qashqai moniker ornamenting your drive, save yourself some cash and go for the French marque instead.
