Local businesses warned to be on their guard following scam... During these current economic times, EMB Ltd, the organisation that delivers the regional Business Link service, is urging local companies to be on their guard against online, postal and telephone scams after companies reported an increase in email ‘phishing’ communications; the latest offering being a tax payment refund from HM Revenue & Customs Refund Department. Sarah Walker, Lincolnshire Area Manager for the Business Link service says, “If a business receives any communication that raises their
suspicions, we would suggest they contact either Business Link or Trading Standards to check before taking any action. Some of these scams are very clever and it’s easy to get taken in by them. Shared Chief Executive Gets Go Ahead South Holland District Council today (12th August 2010) tackled the challenge of public sector spending cuts head on by agreeing to share a Chief Executive with Breckland District Council. The move will deliver financial savings for both councils and enable them to maintain high standards while at the same time protecting vital front line services. Terry Huggins, the existing Chief Executive of South Holland, has been

appointed to the joint role and will in due course bring forward proposals for an integrated joint management team to serve both authorities. Mr Huggins and his newly appointed team will then go on to identify other ways of sharing the commissioning of services more efficiently. South Holland District Council Leader Gary Porter said: “This joint appointment is a way of gaining greater efficiencies and value for money out of the management
layer of both councils by spreading this necessary but costly resource across the two authorities. This will enable both councils to make financial savings in a way that will help us to minimise the impact of the cuts in public expenditure that are to follow later this year. This joint venture will help us to see other opportunities where joint working will create greater efficiencies and will help to make sure both councils remain in a strong position.”

Seeds Are Sown for Pumpkin Growing Competition
Pupils at St John’s Primary School have been busy preparing and potting as part of the town’s award-winning Pumpkin Festival. Pupils were supplied with specially treated seeds and instructions from the festival’s main sponsor, Spalding-based David Bowman Ltd, Europe’s largest pumpkin growers. Competition is expected to be tough because almost 400 seed packs have gone out to South Holland schools. Judging takes place during the festival week, which runs from Saturday 2nd October to Friday 8th October.
Winners receive a ‘pumpkin pack’ filled with games and goodies and have their names announced from the live stage hosted by Tulip Radio on the festival finale night.
Cllr Nick Worth, Council Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: “Preparations are already well under way for the celebrations of Spalding’s tenth anniversary Pumpkin Festival. This is the first of several competitions organised for schools and the community to take part in and it’s great to see so many pupils taking on this challenge. The competition may even produce Spalding’s

Join The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning
The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is Macmillan Cancer Support’s biggest fundraising event. All that they ask people across the UK - and sometimes further afield - to hold a coffee morning, where donations on the day are made to Macmillan. In 2009 43,000 people registered to hold a coffee morning, raising £7.9 million….let’s help them beat this in 2010!
How did it start?
The event started in 1990, when a local fundraising committee decided to hold a coffee morning where people came along to meet and mingle - as they might ordinarily do - but donate the cost of their
coffee to Macmillan in the process. The idea seemed such a simple, yet effective, one that they suggested the model be taken up nationally. The first National World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was in 1991, when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Since then it has raised over £60 million in total for Macmillan Cancer Support. Boston College A level students do it again Nationally 44% of students have missed out on gaining a university place this year but at Boston College that figure is as low as only 13%! An impressive 87% of Boston College students achieved the university place they were hoping for. Boston College lives up to its tagline - Boston College can get you where you want to be! Boston College students achieved an average 98% pass rate, against a record national average of 97.6%, with a phenomenal 100% pass rate in 13 of its 16 subjects. The most outstanding result was achieved in A-level Russian where 100% of students achieved an A*. These staggering results were accomplished through the hard work of dedicated students and staff alike;

the nationally recognised careers and guidance service offered at the College has been vital in assisting students to achieve the future to which they aspire. (I think this is a bit provocative!) Sue Daley, Boston College Principal stated : “More importantly, all our A level students can say they have not only enjoyed their time at Boston College but are well on their way to the future they want”. Results day is an emotional time, with students thrilled that the hard work has paid off, but sad to be moving on, leaving friends and the college behind. But the staff who have been instrumental in their development, both academically and personally, feel proud that they have fulfilled the promises that attracted them and look forward to welcoming those about to start the A-level journey with the College.

South Holland District Council decided to change this and got together with the community and businesses of the South Holland area change this with the South Holland Food Festival held for three weeks during July and August. Taking on a Tenancy?
T
Ensure your deposit is protected!
his information is for people starting a new tenancy with a private landlord or letting agent from 6 April 2007. It only applies to assured shorthold tenants. Most new private tenancies are likely to be assured shorthold, unless your landlord lives with you or your accommodation goes with your job. If you are unsure about what kind of tenancy you are starting, you should get advice. Most landlords and letting agents ask tenants for a deposit as security against damage or non-payment of rent. If you pay a deposit on or after 6 April 2007, your landlord must use a tenancy deposit protection scheme to safeguard it.
What is a tenancy deposit protection scheme? A tenancy deposit protection scheme safeguards your deposit. This means you can be sure that you will get your deposit back at the end of the tenancy, as long as you are entitled to it. For example, your landlord may be entitled to some of the deposit if there is any damage or if you haven’t paid all your rent. The scheme also provides a service to sort out disagreements about the deposit without going to court. There are two types of scheme and it is up to your landlord to choose which one they want to join. One type of scheme is a custodial scheme and the other is insurance-based. The main difference is that: • in the custodial scheme, your landlord pays the deposit into the scheme and the scheme looks after it. The deposit will earn interest which will be paid back with the deposit when you move out • In an insurance-based scheme, your landlord keeps the deposit, but has to pay insurance to the scheme.
How do I know if my deposit is protected?
If you are looking for a place to rent, ask the landlord which tenancy scheme they will use to safeguard your deposit. Within 14 days of you paying a deposit, your landlord must give you details of the scheme they are using to protect it. It is also important that you and your landlord agree, in writing, what condition the place is in when you start renting it, including a list of the furniture and fittings (known as an inventory). This should help prevent disagreements at the end of the tenancy.
What happens at the end of the tenancy?
You should get your deposit back within ten days if you and your landlord agree about how much you should get back. The way this works, and what happens if there is a disagreement, depends on the type of scheme your landlord is using. If there is a disagreement, make sure the landlord and the deposit scheme have your contact details such as a forwarding or email address or a telephone number. It is reasonable for your landlord to take money off the deposit to cover, for example, damage to the property or furniture, or missing items which were listed in the inventory. But they should not take money off the deposit to pay for fair wear and tear, in other words, damage which has taken place over a long time through normal use.
Custodial scheme
If your deposit is being held in the custodial scheme and you and your landlord agree how much you should get back, they will tell the scheme how much to pay you. The scheme will have to pay you this amount, plus any interest, within ten days. If there is a disagreement about how much deposit you should get back, the scheme will hold on to the disputed amount until the disagreement has been sorted out and pay the rest to you. Insurance-based schemes In an insurance-based scheme, your landlord will have kept your deposit. They must return it to you within ten days of you asking for it, as long as you both agree how much you should get back. If you and your landlord disagree about how much of your deposit you should get back, they must pay you the amount which isn’t disputed and pay the rest into the scheme until the disagreement has been sorted

out. If the landlord does not pay you what you are entitled to, the insurance scheme will pay it.
Sorting out disagreements about deposits
Each scheme has a free service which landlords and tenants can use to sort out disagreements about deposits, instead of going to court. This is called an alternative dispute resolution (ADR) service. The ADR service will decide how much of the deposit you should get back. The tenancy deposit scheme will then pay you the money. If you agree to use the ADR service, you will have to agree with whatever decision is made. You will not then be able go to court. If you or your landlord do not want to use the ADR service, you will be able to go to court to try to get your deposit back.
What if my landlord does not protect my deposit?
If your landlord or an agent acting for your landlord does not protect your deposit using a tenancy deposit protection scheme, or will not tell you which scheme they are using, you can take them to court. The court will either order your landlord to pay you back the deposit or to pay it into one of the schemes. It may also order your landlord to pay you three times the amount of the deposit as a fine. If you are thinking about taking your landlord to court, you should get advice. There is a special procedure which private landlords can often use to evict tenants without having to give reasons and without a court hearing. However, your landlord is not allowed to use this procedure if they don’t protect your deposit using a tenancy deposit protection scheme, or will not tell you which scheme they are using. If your landlord is trying to evict you, you should talk to an experienced housing adviser straight away.
What if I paid a deposit before April 2007?
Landlords don’t have to use a tenancy deposit protection scheme for deposits paid before 6 April 2007, unless you renewed your tenancy after this date. If you paid a deposit before April 2007and you have a disagreement with your landlord about it, try to come to an agreement. If that doesn’t work, you will have to think about taking your landlord to court. If you’re in this position, you should get advice. You may have to come up with an ingenious idea to conceal it in your hand luggage rather than on your person, so at least you will have it on the plane. You could always pop in to duty free or any of the other shops (where we all like to stock up with goodies before we go) then tuck it away in the carrier bag. Alternatively save the proposal for when you are in Rome as there are many beautiful & romantic settings there, such as the Trevi Fountain or the Spanish steps or during a candlelight dinner. My car was hit by another vehicle whilst it was parked and they didn’t stop. When I received my renewal documents recently my insurance company had reduced my no claims discount. Is this correct?
Phil replies...... Your no claim discount or no claim bonus as it is sometimes known, is exactly that, a discount for not making a claim under your policy. Unfortunately it is not a no blame discount, so if your insurers make a payment under the policy, and they cannot recover their outlay from the person that caused the damage or their insurers, the discount will generally be reduced. I say generally, as most insurers will allow you to protect your no claim discount after you have been driving claim free for a number of years and reached the maximum available discount under the policy. Protection of your no claim discount is available at an additional premium and typically allows you to have two claims, in a rolling five year period, that were either your own fault or caused by someone else and where the insurance company have not been able to recover the cost of the claim. The circumstances of your own incident are a good example of an “at fault” claim and should your policy have had the benefit of protection your discount would not have been reduced.

I have been called for jury service for a second time and as I am in a small business it is going to be a huge strain on my boss (there is just the two of us!). Is there any way of getting out of it?
Debbie replies..... Receiving a Jury Summons means that you are legally required to attend Court. However you can apply to a summoning officer to be excused from jury service or have service deferred. In the first instance contact the Jury Central Summoning Bureau on 020 7202 6800 or 0845 8038003 or email jurysummoning@hmcourts-service.gsi.gov.uk If you have served or attended as a juror in the previous two years you are entitled to be excused as a right because of previous jury service. If it is more than two years since you last served or attended as a juror, your application will be considered on a case by case basis and decided on individual merits. The summoning officer is required to balance an individual’s circumstances with the need of the Court to have a representative jury. In the first instance the officer will look to defer service and give a new date within the next twelve months rather than excuse an applicant for the next twelve months. Jurors can be excused for valid business reasons; any application will be closely looked at and only granted if there would be unusual hardship. Your application will therefore need to include details of the business and how it would be affected if you were absent.

This is a very involved area and my answer is limited to a single property not classed as a house of Multiple Occupancy The Rented property electrical installation is required to be Safe when a tenancy begins Maintained in a safe condition throughout the tenancy This is the landlords responsibility To achieve the above a Full Periodic Inspection and Report (PIR) not just a visual of the electrical installation is required by a fully qualified Electrician competent to carry out this work. Any remedial works required by the PIR/report must be carried out, a satisfactory report issued. A full copy kept which contains dates for future inspections determined by the actual condition and test results of the installation, usually between one/five years Another new tenant means the system has to be safe so another inspection will be required although not necessarily as in-depth as the full inspection. Portable appliances left on the premises also require regular testing so leave as few as possible

Emma replies.... Yes, you will be able to have a 17 year mortgage term. The maximum age at the end of the mortgage term is 70 for the majority of lenders however there are lenders who will consider terms to the age of 75 and even 85 years of age. If you intend to work beyond the age of 65 then lenders will typically require a letter from you confirming that it is your intention to work until the age of 70 and that this is realistic with your occupation. If the mortgage term extends beyond the age of 70 then lenders will require sight of your retirement income and this will be taken into consideration when they are establishing if the mortgage is affordable.
Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

Sheltered Housing Schemes
The Council provides sheltered housing throughout the district to meet the requirements of older people. It provides an environment which allows residents to keep their independence in homes which are suited to their needs. In the case of an emergency, help is provided either through the Scheme Manager or the- 24-hour emergency alarm system. The Council has nearly 1000 dwellings located at 28 schemes throughout the district from small groups of 10 dwellings to larger sites covering over 100. All Schemes have access to a nearby community centre. There are three secure door entry schemes in the district (Spalding, Pinchbeck and Crowland) which offer ground floor and first floor flats and bedsits for which we do not currently have a long waiting list. In fact, there are vacancies in Trinity Court, CrowIand and Nene Court, Spalding. A viewing can be arranged by contacting the Supported Housing Team. Anyone can apply for sheltered housing provided they are over 60 years old and either not in employment or not working more than 16 hours per week. Should you currently be in a council property, in particular if you are releasing a family home, there could be help at hand to make your move as smooth as possible. Super Stuffed Marrow
Nick Richer of Geo Adams & Sons in The Crescent, Spalding brings you his delicious stuffed marrow recipe This recipe for stuffed marrow is very easy to do and I think you will enjoy it! Serves 4 1 large marrow
Sauce:
Tomatoes 2 Large tins or 3lb fresh tomatoes 2tbs. Tomato Puree (sundried is the best) 1 or 2 large onions 3 cloves of garlic (peeled) 450g Lean minced beef Lots and lots of fresh Basil Salt & Black pepper Chilli (either seeds or 1 green) Fry the onions in Rapeseed or Olive oil until soft, add the Minced Beef and stir until the meat has browned on a medium heat, add
tomatoes and herbs, salt and pepper, add chilli and garlic, cook for about 15 to 20 mins on low, simmering, stirring occasionally until it has reduced down. Half the Marrow, scoop out the seeds, cut the bottom to make it stable but do not take too much off, then place in a ovenproof dish or roasting pan Pour the sauce into the marrow until it is full. Make a normal white sauce with corn flour and milk (you can use a packet mix) pour over the marrow, make sure the sauce is thickish. Then put a sprinkle of parmesan cheese on top, cook for about an hour on 180 0c/ gas mark 6. Check that the marrow is cooked and it is ready to serve.

The early bird catches the worm Keep your garden birds happy and healthy
It’s easy to forget about feeding the birds at this time of year, but don’t; particularly with the weather so sporadic it’s important to offer sustenance.
These acrobatic rodents will go to great lengths on their quest for a nut, including chewing through plastic. You will go through peanuts and feeders at an alarming rate.
Although the birds will be appreciative of the majority of food served, there are a couple of things you should be aware of.
Another key consideration when deciding on where to put your feeders – cats! Those cute, four legged friends will lurk in shrubs and bushes just waiting to make the most of a meal for themselves.
Salted food should be avoided. It can seriously dehydrate their little bodies. Another common mistake is dishing up dough. Little birds’tummies do not take kindly to dry bread, it swells and leaves them uncomfortable and in pain. Avoid the bloat, and if you like to put your stale bread out for the little fellas, make sure it’s moist.
Put your feeders high enough (at least 1.2m up) so cats can’t get to them. And for your ground feeding birds like Dunnock, Song Thrush and Blackbird, put the food in open spaces, away from hiding places. Wherever you’re leaving food out, don’t overdo it; you’ll only attract unwanted mice and rats.
Now that you know what to steer clear of, rest assured there are plenty of good foods available for the varieties of birds you’ll find in your garden - simply ask in store at Rooke’s and we’ll happily point you in the right direction. Dinner is served Once you have the food, you need to consider the feeding habits of the birds as they do vary quite a lot. Members of the Tit family enjoy hanging food. So peanut dispensers and fat balls are a great solution. However, word to the wise, make sure your dispensers are strong and sturdy. The plastic feeders may be slightly cheaper, but our advice is to try to avoid them if possible. One simple reason for this - the Squirrel!
A good tip for choosing where to place bird feeders is to put them near to roses and other shrubs. If you have problems with Greenfly and Caterpillars, the birds will eat them – you add to their menu and they do you a favour. Everyone’s happy! Bird tables are ideal as they suit most types of bird and have the benefit of being off the ground. This keeps the mice and rats at bay, but also deters those feline friends. With the weather being as unpredictable as it is, a roof on the bird table provides some welcome shelter. It is by no means essential, but will keep both the food and the birds dry.
Come on in, the water’s fine! A little singing in the rain and splashing in puddles never hurt anyone and offers the birds a good source of water. But generally this is a short lived solution.

Drinking can become more important for some species of bird when their usual supply of natural food is affected by weather changes. A lot of the food you will provide will not contain the same levels of moisture as something like an earthworm for example. In urban areas particularly, bird baths provide crucial replenishment and washing facilities for them. Birds bathe to keep clean and also to keep their feathers in good condition. A few species, including Starlings and House Sparrows, like to bathe in groups. Not exactly synchronized swimming, but a great spectacle all the same. So make sure you buy a bath with enough room; we wouldn’t want the embarrassment of touching feathers! It is best to use tap water in your bird bath and don’t forget to top it up and replace it regularly. You’ll more than likely get a small build-up of algae, but this is easily cleaned with an old washing up brush, or similar stiff bristled brush. Avoid detergent or cleaning products. Even the slightest trace could harm the birds – so keep it for your dishes instead! Most importantly, it’s important to provide clean water all year-round.
It’s a dying breed From time to time people find dead or dying birds near their feeders. This is generally caused by Salmonella poisoning. These bacteria can build up to dangerous levels for birds when the areas they feed from aren’t clean.
Puffed feathers and lethargy are common symptoms of suffering birds. Typically they’ll continue to feed, but they’re unable to digest the food properly. Another common problem for birds, particularly collared doves, can be ‘Tricomoniasis’. Finches can also be affected by this single celled parasite, with the Greenfinch, again, being the most prone. Tricomoniasis’symptoms are similar to Salmonella, but you may also notice a visible swelling in the throat. Once infected, it typically ends in tragedy for the little birds. So as they say, prevention is better than cure. There’s an easy way to help - simply keep feeding areas clean. Clear away waste (such as husks from seeds) every few days. Feeders, such as tube feeders, and bird tables must be cleaned every few weeks using a proper disinfectant. And mix it up a little. Move the feeding areas around the garden every couple of weeks. This allows the ground below to recover and minimises the buildup of harmful bacteria. A win win situation all round!

Dealing With Nits
At some point during your child’s time at school there’s one issue that’s bound to raise its ugly head - nits! We thought with the new term upon us we would give you help and guidance should your child come home with a case of the little blighters! Incredibly common amongst children between the ages of 4 and 11, outbreaks of head lice are something most parents will encounter at some point so no matter how squeamish you are you’ll have to take prompt action if you find they’ve taken up residence in your child’s hair.
What are Nits?
Nits is the name given to the eggs laid by head lice. Head lice are tiny, wingless insects; they affect only humans and live by sucking blood from the scalp. They lay eggs in cases (nits) and breed incredibly quickly, although they only live for one month. The egg cases which look like tiny white specks attached quite securely to the roots of the hairs. Eggs hatch after about 7-10 days and by 10-14 days the lice are fully mature and around 2-4mm long. As soon as a louse reaches maturity it quickly starts to reproduce so it’s vital to treat an outbreak as soon as possible.
Why are they so common amongst children?
When children play together they usually have very close contact and it’s easy enough for a louse to, literally, walk from one child’s hair to another. Generally-speaking, the longer the hair the greater the chance a child has of getting head lice. Lice are less common in adults simply because adults don’t tend to encroach on each other’s personal space in the way children do! But of course parents do have that close contact with their children so if your child has head lice there’s a strong possibility they’ll pass them on to you and other members of the family.
How do I know if my child has lice?
You might suspect your child has lice if they complain of an itchy head and a note has recently come home from school warning parents that there has been an outbreak. It’s important to make sure they definitely do have nits before you embark on any treatment. Sometimes an infestation is shown up by little red blood spots on the scalp. If nits have taken residence close inspection of the scalp will reveal the little white eggs attached to the base of the hair. If the nits have hatched you may be able to see lice in the hair behind the ears and at the nape of the neck To help you establish if your child has nits or head lice get hold of a wide-toothed, plastic comb. Use this to thoroughly comb through your child’s hair. It can be tricky to see what you’re extracting from your child’s hair so comb onto a piece of white paper or a white towel so the dark lice will show up. Remember that you’re looking for a live, mobile insect - be careful to distinguish bits of fluff or dirt from real, moving creatures!
around half an hour on this procedure. You must also be sure to repeat the condition and combing daily if possible, or at least several times a week until you’re sure you’ve eliminated the problem.
Treatment - Chemical
In most cases wet combing will eliminate the problem but where the infestation is more stubborn you may need to take a more radical approach. Remember that chemicals are only recommended for use if all else fails but if you’ve got a really bad infestation your doctor or pharmacist will probably recommend a short course of medicated, topical treatment. The chemical treatments work by having a good period of contact with your child’s hair and scalp so be wary of using over-the-counter medicated shampoos which may be too dilute and which do not have long enough contact with the lice. Although convenient, you may find the problem comes back quickly because the lice are resistant to the shampoo. Medical treatments are usually in the form of either alcohol or water-based lotions. Although usually more effective, alcohol-based treatments are not recommended for children with allergies, very sensitive skin or asthma. Some treatments should not be used in pregnancy or on very young babies. Both alcohol and water based treatments are usually applied to the hair, left to dry naturally and then rinsed out the following morning. To ensure all lice and eggs have been killed the treatment should repeated a week later.
Can I prevent further outbreaks?
Unfortunately not. Something of a fact of life, nits and head lice are just one of those things, but you can take the small precaution of tying back long hair as this reduces the chances of contact between your child’s hair and that of an infested head of hair. The main thing to remember is that early detection is vital and may help you avoid passing the problem around the family and having to resort to a more radical, chemical treatment to get rid of the infestation. If your child has just got over head lice remember that regular checking for some time after is a sound way of preventing further outbreaks.
Treatment - Non-chemical
Most pharmacists and doctors recommend the non-chemical ‘wet combing’ method for successfully dealing with an infestation. It’s worth noting that head lice are becoming increasingly resistant to chemicals, including many of the pharmaceutical preparations commonly used to treat head lice. Although labour-intensive, this thorough method is effective because the combing through both removes the live lice and kills the eggs, thus reducing and eventually killing of the infestation. Don’t worry if your child has very long hair - you need to concentrate most closely on the hair at the base of the scalp, which is where the nits are hatched and the lice like to congregate. Remember to be particularly thorough around the back and nape of the neck. Wash your child’s hair using your usual shampoo. Apply a good amount of conditioner all over the wet hair causing the lice to lose their grip and begin combing, firstly with a normal comb. Then, using a special nit combs from your chemist work through the hair from root to tip, checking the comb for bugs after each sweep - it’s recommended that you spend

Each month I have been writing about different ideas for outdoor play experiences for your children, with ideas relating to water play, den making and construction. I have been using the training and resources given to me by the Early Excellence Team and the
Local Authority to really develop and challenge our ideas of outdoor play and resources. In my last issues I explained about the children’s learning and development and how we as parents can help support schools and nurseries by contributing to our child’s education. I have only been focusing on outdoor play to support the children’s learning goals but the same ideas can be used with any activity anywhere. It’s very simple; provide the right resources, toys and equipment then take a step back to allow children to use their own thoughts and ideas. Then all we have to do is get involved and use open ended statements that start with Who? What? Why? When? “Let’s stop telling them how to do things and let’s support them to learn for themselves.” I hope from the positive feedback I receive from my articles that many readers will been having a go at some of my ideas and encouraging their children to make dens and experiment with water and different resources at home. I will be attending further training sessions and receiving more resources for my nursery in September and this, I will continue to share with you. I have thought about how it
would be great to see some photos and ideas from you the readers and your families having fun and being creative at home. So with the help of my staff we have decided to have a competition to see who can be the most creative. Please use like I have been suggesting natural, hands on resources and everyday objects from around your home rather than manmade toys. There are different types of leather available in the market. The Aniline leather will remain softer and more pliable, semi aniline leather will also be soft but little more stain resistant. Pigmented leather is one of the commonly found in leather sofas which is more durable and easy to maintain and clean.
Try before you buy
Sit on the suite for a couple of minutes in the show room to test the comfort level and its quality. Online shopping is risky when making such a large purchase, I would always want to test the piece before spending such a large amount of money. For avoiding back problems select upright back and hard seat models. Ideally to avoid your couch from sagging after few years you have to select your couch with high density foam along with coil construction. In short this is one of the larger purchases homeowners can make so take your time, try the comfort and investigate the quality.

fter 12 years of working in architectural practice, Kris Baxter, Studio 11 Architecture’s founder decided that it was time for a change and time to respond to a client’s brief in a more personal manner. Studio 11 Architecture was founded on the principles of offering clients a full architectural design service from conception of their project through to completion. Kris says: “We are passionate about architecture, and believe that architecture can be delivered in every project. Whether it’s a small domestic extension or a large residential development we do our best to provide our clients with places that they enjoy living, working and socialising in.” Kris says: “When Studio 11 Architecture started two and half years ago we had one client, we now work for several residential developers and have numerous private clients. We currently have an extension in Holbeach, an extension in Spalding and two small residential developments in Wisbech under construction. Together with several projects in the design phase ‘on the drawing board’ ” Kris trained and worked in Spalding, working at a practice of Chartered Architects and latterly at Allison Homes. “As a designer I have been very lucky,” Kris says, “I have been lucky enough to work alongside several very good Architects, and I have already designed a building that will outlive me, the vestry at St Mary and St Nicolas Church. During my time at Allison Homes I designed lots of

Volleyball is one of the most participated in sports throughout the world. In Spalding if you are over 10 years old there is a place where you can join and earn how to play with some of the areas top coaches. As a 10 year old you can start with Spalding Junior Volleyball on Monday nights at Spalding Grammar school for a small fee of only £2.00. At a national tournament held recently in Lincoln, Spalding Juniors won both the under 13 boys and under 12 girls competitions. We also have firmly established links at Regional level and currently have two players in the regional squads appropriate to their age. Members from the junior group then progress through either age or ability to Spalding Youth Volleyball. However anyone between 13-19 can join this club at any time. Training takes place at Spalding Grammar school on Thursday night from 6.30 - 9.30pm for only £1.50. The club plays competitivevolleyball in the Lincolnshire league as Spalding Saracens. This club has produced two players who have gone on to play at England u17 and u15 levels respectively and regularly has members playing at regional level. Both these clubs have attained Sport England Clubmark award and in fact Spalding Youth Volleyball were the first volleyball club in the country to achieve this status. In addition all young people are encouraged to become coaches and over 10 young people have obtained a Level I coaching certificate. Members of this club then progress on to the hugely successful Spalding Volleyball Club. Progression is made again on ability and age. Over the past two seasons Spalding have become the team to beat in both

Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire leagues having won all but one of the competitions they entered last year and finishing winners or runners up in all competitions this season. They also won the Walton Shield for the first time in their history. This is due, in no small part, to the joint captains who are both former members of Spalding Youth Volleyball. Training for this club takes place at Castle Sports Complex on Sunday at 7.30-9pm. Cost is £3.00 with reductions for full time students and unemployed. Alongside the adult squad a new beginners club has developed to enable adult beginners and less experienced players to learn how to play as the quality of the main session made it very difficult to integrate those less experienced players. This group again meets at the Castle Sports Complx on Sunday at 6.00pm. Full squad training follows and members often take the opportunity to watch when matches are being played in order to appreciate the qualities and skills involved. A recent poll on the clubs website revealed that 80% of parents with a child under 16 would like to play volleyball as a way of keeping fit. This is a great opportunity for these people to get involved at some level. Spalding Junior Volleyball also occasionally hosts a parent and child event which have been quite successful and have recently held a schools competition for all 10 and 11 year olds. Training for all clubs will restart in September: Spalding Juniors (age 10-12) Monday 6th September Spalding Youth Volleyball (13-19 years) Thursday 2nd September Spalding Volleyball (all adults) Sunday 5th September

Give your car the showroom clean Here’s our 10 steps to the perfectly cleaned car. 1: Choose a shady spot, preferably away from trees that are dripping sap or dropping leaves. 2: Make sure all doors and windows are closed. 3: Put one capful of car soap into a bucket and fill it 3/4 of the way with warm water. Set the bucket aside.
4: Hose any excess dirt off the car, beginning at the roof and working down to the tires. 5: Lather a sponge or terry cloth rag in the bucket of soapy water and sponge the roof of the car. Spray off excess soap when the entire roof has been cleaned. 6:Repeat for all four sides of the car, washing one full side including windows, fenders and tires and rinsing completely before going to the next side. 7: Give the car one final rinse with the hose to get rid of any water spots when all four sides have been washed and rinsed.
8: Take a chamois leather (“shammy” leather) or towel and dry the car thoroughly by setting the towel flat against the surface of the car and dragging it along the surface to pick up any water spots. Start at the roof and work your way down to the tires. 9: Wash the windows with a rag soaked in plain water and dry them with a dry rag, or use window cleaner and pieces of balled-up newspaper on both the inside and the outside of the windows. 10: Give any metal or chrome an extra rubdown to get rid of water spots.

Are you organising The Office Party?
S
o you’re in charge of organizing the Christmas party? Whether you volunteered or were appointed, organising a Christmas party can be challenging but can also be fun at the same time. Depending on the size of the party you’re planning there are many things to do and a good number of ways to make it a big hit. Not only will you be rewarded with fact that it went over with flying colous but you may also be taking on a project that you may be able to impress your boss with. Let’s start with the funding of the party. If you’re a small office and you’re having it on site you probably do not have a lot of money to spend on the function. Your first course of action is to get every ones input on what kind of party they would like to have. By getting your colleagues input you’re removing the possibilities of disappointing them on the type of party you throw.
With a small budget it is imperative to get everyone involved in contributing to the party. Hang a poster in the break room asking people to make a dish for the party. You will be surprised how many people will cook or bring food to the party and what is better than home cooked food? By doing this you will free up your budget for decorations and gifts. With the food part of the party out the way let’s look at decorating for the party. Decorating for the party is so much fun and can be a lot easier if you recruit others for ideas and help. Go to the pound shop and you will be astonished by the amount of holiday decorations you can find at great deals. Your party will be sure to be a hit and you will be the shining star of the office for sure. Make sure you have the Christmas music playing and be sure to let your colleagues invite their families and friends if that is allowed. Most importantly, have a great time with everyone and make your Christmas party one to be remembered. Now, let’s assume you’re organising a Christmas party for a larger group and have a much larger budget to work with. This can be a daunting task with a whole lot to consider. First and
foremost you need to get your colleagues opinions on what are where they would like. Are you having the party on site or off? If you’re having it on site what is the space you’re working with and or can it accommodate the number of people you will have there. If your event will be off site you will need to find a space to hold your party. Look for halls, pubs, restaurants, hotels and specific party venues or why not somewhere more unusual like a museum or organised trip? Call around and get the best prices. Depending on the venue it will impact on your food choice, if you hire a hall you could again get your co-workers to cook and bring dishes or you can have it catered. If you’re having it at a hotel, party venue, pub or restaurant a huge amount of the stress is taken away as they will look after the food and even the decorations, if you ask nicely! Decorating your party with a bigger space will need a little more of an investment than a small office party. Once again use the pound shops for great prices on decorations. Your local party shop will have the essentials for your party such as table coverings, cutlery and much more. Between the two you should be able to find everything for your party event. Larger parties will draw larger amounts of people. Plan activities and entertain the idea of live music such as a DJ, everyone loves music and most people have a great time dancing. Secret Santa’s are perfect for larger parties as buying gifts for all could cost a small fortune! Finally, make sure you get to enjoy your party and don’t end up running around doing everything. The key to good organisation is delegation!
