Welcome
to the October issue While my favourite season of the year is Spring, I do love Autumn as well. Living where we do we get to see the season in all its beauty and we can still enjoy being outdoors until the first real frosts kick in! We also get to have the mother of all conker tournaments as we are not short of horse chestnut trees. Just leave all the talk of health and safety at the door! In the issue we take a look at the annual Spalding Pumpkin Festival on October 9th – if you are anywhere near Spalding that day I recommend you go as it is a fun night out for the whole family and the fireworks are absolutely spectacular. You’ll find more details in the magazine, as well as a couple of pumpkin recipes! Elsewhere in the magazine bulb experts Bakker give us their top tips for planting Spring bulbs in Autumn and we look a little further ahead to Christmas (there, I said it. In October!) and help you to plan your festivities. Enjoy the issue.

Street drinking Boston’s street drinking controls, introduced in January, have been judged a success. Police and council officials say far fewer people are now consuming alcohol in the town centre and areas where the new rules apply. More than 300 have been approached by police and all have readily given up their alcohol, fully aware of the Public Space Protection Order. Of those only 18 have reoffended within six months. Insp Jim Manning said: “There has been a noticeable reduction in street drinking in the town centre itself, which is welcome. The purpose of this order was to remove street drinkers from the town centre and it looks like it is working. “My officers have confiscated alcohol from more than 300 street drinkers since the beginning of the year. All drinkers have willingly obliged and many are immediately apologetic for breaking the rules.” Insp Manning said he still wanted people to report street drinking by calling 101. Not only could offenders be dealt with, but it would also help build a picture of where the biggest trouble spots might still be. Policing teams have the power to act, which they have, and everyone so far adheres
to their requests, what a result.” Anyone failing to stop drinking alcohol, when requested to do so by a police officer, could be fined up to £500. The new rules introduced at the start of the year removed the need for street drinking of alcohol to be combined with an element of anti-social behaviour before police could take action The council’s street cleaning team has reported reduced levels of alcohol-related litter in the town centre. Boston was the first town in the country to make use of the new PSPO. Figures to date show that 246 warning letters have been sent out. Of those only 18 received a repeat letter for reoffending within six months of the initial offence. And only one had to be contacted a third time. Boston Borough Council staff are also now playing their part in a new county-wide initiative to help problem drinkers resistant to help. Two member of the council’s anti-social behaviour team have undergone “Blue Light” training and will help identify treatmentresistant problem drinkers for referral to the new help project. The Blue Light project has been launched by Lincolnshire County Council and
Lincolnshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner to help keep town centres across Lincolnshire safe. To be delivered by Nacro and Alcohol Concern, the programme will introduce two specialist outreach workers to help these drinkers, as well as a training package to be delivered to people and organisations who come into contact with these drinkers, including street pastors, family workers, supported housing and children’s services. As well as these specialist workers, training is currently being rolled out to over 200 people across the county, all of which have regular contact with these treatment resistant drinkers. Supt Housley said: “It aims to encourage people to think about these drinkers differently. Instead of just putting them forward for a treatment service, we need to think about the cause of their alcoholism why they are drinking? Maybe it is because they are homeless, have no job or no money, problems with their family, or just feel they have no future. We need to work out what we can do to solve their issues and get them back on the right track, which we ultimately hope will reduce the amount of anti-social behaviour on our streets.”
Home for birds and bees A neglected weed-filled patch of ground on the approach to Boston’s St Botolph’s footbridge has been transformed. Volunteers have contributed to the work, which has included a major clean-up, replanting and the addition of accommodation for the birds and the bees. The new garden is part of a bigger project to improve the pedestrian route between the railway station and Boston Stump. Artist Jeni Cairns has designed the garden – an area nominated for improvement by Witham Central and Carlton Road Neighbourhood Action Group for Transported Art‘s On Your Doorstep project. Jeni is a Royal Horticultural Society gold medal-winning garden designer and led workshops at the site to plant flowers and herbs and make a bug hotel. The bigger project will see artworks lining the route from the station to the Stump. Prisoners nearing the end of their sentence worked on the area a few weeks ago to prepare it. On Thursday some turned out again from HM Prison North Sea Camp’s community engagement team, along with Jeni and Elizabeth Bergeron, from Transported, and Jen Moore, Boston Borough Council’s environment and sustainability officer, to complete the planting. Compost to improve the soil has returned to Boston. It has been donated by Bettaland, from Crowland, and is compost made from residents’ green waste collected by the borough council. The multi-story bug hotel built by Jeni and volunteers is now in place against the wall of the B&M store, along with four unique 4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
multi-occupancy bird boxes designed and made by Jeni. These are composed of steel and ply, with patterned steel “front doors” plasma cut by Jeni. Each of the four has accommodation for two or three nesting birds. The garden will be officially opened by Boston Mayor Cllr Richard Austin on Friday, August 28, at about 3.30pm. Jeni will be in attendance to answer questions. There will be willow sculpting by Julie Willoughby of Zoomorphia from 10am. She will help visitors make sculptures for the garden of butterflies, insects and flowers. There will be live music from Liam Robinson, of Mini Morris, who will perform traditional Lincolnshire folk tunes from 2.30pm. Refreshments will be available and all are welcome to attend the FREE event which will conclude at around 4.30pm.

Lots of Boston Heroes to be Proud Of! Campaign to nominate unsung heroes of Boston to feature in new artworks has closed after having had a brilliant response. Transported and Boston Borough Council have been working together on Boston Hero, a project which will celebrate our community’s unsung heroes in artwork to be placed on the side of Boston Borough Council’s fleet of refuse collection trucks. The nomination process has now closed, but the response was overwhelming. Nearly fifty nominations have been received and were wide ranging, including individuals, committees and groups, and with varying roles from cleaners to health care workers, and teachers to performers. Artist Sarah Brown was planning to use nominations as inspiration for the twelve artworks, each showing a person doing the role or activity they had been nominated for; but due to the fantastic response, she has had to rethink her original strategy of focusing on one role per artwork. In the past few weeks, she has met with as many of the nominated people as possible, to find out more details about what they do and different ways they could be represented. The finished artworks will now have Boston Borough backdrops with multiple roles depicted within that backdrop as appropriate. Some unfortunately won’t
be able to be included purely due to the constraints this presents, but although they won’t be represented on a lorry, they will get something from Sarah to celebrate their nomination. Sarah Brown, artist, said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting with as many of the nominees as I have been able to in the time I have spent in Boston. It was lovely to meet with people who have such a passion for making the borough a better place to live. Whilst I spent time with each of the groups of people I got a great sense of community spirit and effort put into the keeping the place clean and tidy as well as including sections of the community that may otherwise become isolated. I have also spent some time with a small section of the many council departments and had not until now appreciated how many of them go above and beyond what is expected to
assist the community and how many cross overs there are between voluntary roles within the area and the council. The huge number of nominations has been overwhelming and I have tried to incorporate as many of the different sectors as I can. It has been impossible to meet with and include everybody but each role has been very much in mind whilst I have been gathering inspiration and drawing.” The lorries are due to be wrapped with the new artwork in late September, and on Thursday 8 October there is a one-off opportunity to see them all together in Boston Market Place from 4pm to 6pm. When completed, the designs will also be available to view on the Transported website along with details of the roles that are being depicted on each – so keep your eye out for your favourite and read the story behind the art!
Single person council tax discount review Some people who live on their own in a property in Boston borough may be entitled to a discount on the amount of Council Tax they have to pay. Boston Borough Council, together with local government support service Northgate, is reviewing the single person discount to ensure only those who qualify are receiving it. Currently there are 8,735 single person discount claimants in Boston borough, who receive a total discount of £2,407,928. The Audit Commission reports that nationally more than £200 million of Single Person Discounts may be inappropriately awarded, impacting upon the already overstretched budgets of councils. Generally, the full Council Tax bill assumes that two adults live in a property. If only one adult lives there (as their main home), the Council Tax bill will be reduced by the 25 per cent Single Person Discount, although some adults are disregarded for Council Tax. See http://tinyurl.com/opvnmxk for full details of Council Tax exemptions. Boston Borough Council, with Northgate, are using a combination of council data, third party data sources and specialist validation services to: ● Reaffirm the discount for genuine claimants efficiently and accurately, ensuring that the discount currently paid to those who are eligible is not cancelled;
● Remove ineligible or erroneous claims and increase revenue for the council ● Provide “fairness for all” citizens so that those who are paying the correct level of Council Tax are not subsidising their fellow citizens who are erroneously claiming the discount. Northgate will commission a search against properties from a number of different sources to determine a list of adults associated with the addresses. This is information already in the public domain and in compliance with the principles of the Data Protection Act. Some residents may receive a letter in connection with this project. The pre-paid return envelope will have a Twickenham address used by Northgate Cllr Aaron Spencer, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for finance, said: “This is about fairness as much as it is about austerity. It is only fair that all pay their appropriate dues as prescribed by the laws of the land and that some should not slip through the net when others in the same position are fully meeting their obligations. “It’s also about councils collecting in all the cash due to them in order to run the services the public expect, want and demand despite the financial pressures and cuts in funding at this time. “If someone genuinely qualifies for the single person discount they will receive it. If they don’t – well, we are not asking them to contribute any more than they are legally obliged to.” SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk
Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston There is seldom worse news than people losing their jobs. The ripples of loss of employment, and a means to earn a living, spread far beyond the person who has lost their job. Their immediate family are impacted and the reduction in spending power affects many others in the local area. It is appalling that circumstances beyond the control of hard-working people mean that they have to worry about their ability to continue paying their mortgage or rent and all the other normal and necessary household bills that we all have. Even worse if it is the main or only breadwinner in a young family. My heart goes out to those in this position among the staff who have just lost their jobs at Norprint – a longestablished and respected Boston business. It will be small comfort for them to know that at least the 90 jobs at sister firm Magnadata look set to be saved by a takeover, and perhaps only slim comfort to hear that some of the Norprint employees might be offered positions with the new owners of Magnadata. It is a harsh reality that, in the world of commerce, the immediate assistance local authorities can give to those who have lost their employment is limited. Boston Borough Council may be able to help anyone worried about being able to pay their rent and council tax and may be able to help with council tax relief and housing benefits and universal credit. It is a sad coincidence that latest figures show that Boston has the lowest figures in the county for people claiming Jobseekers Allowance. In fact we have been below the national and regional average for almost all the period since August, 2008. This reflects what we have known all along, that Boston is still a great place to work and do business in. We are not complacent – 544 claiming the allowance is still 544 too many, and we endeavour to continue to try to do all we can to attract new business and help existing businesses to grow, expand and
prosper. Any business thinking about relocating or existing businesses wanting to expand, or new businesses in the process of being formed, should contact the Greater Lincolnshire LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) - http://www. greaterlincolnshirelep.co.uk/ - the Boston area Chamber of Commerce Jenny. Elwick@Lincs-Chamber.co.uk or call 07912 579880 or Boston Borough Council Chief Executive Phil Drury or the council’s head of built environment and development Steve Lumb for assistance (phil.drury@ boston.gov.uk or steve.lumb@boston.gov. uk or call on 01205 314200). We will help them succeed in any way we can – their success will be the town and borough’s success and I want to keep driving that forwards. Despite the bad news of the Norprint job losses there are indicators that Boston continues to present an attractive proposition to enterprising businesses. The judgement of Asda’s former chief executive is that Boston should be one of the first towns chosen for one of his new shops as part of a 50-strong national roll out. In recent months we have had a steady influx of new businesses which have generated interest among other businesses. This is also recognised by the chief executive of the new store, Pep&Co, who has said they will play their part in helping the town centre thrive. The new jobs created will be welcome, as will the plugging of holes in the high street – or, in this case, Pescod Square. The new shop will take over the large space previously occupied by Clinton Cards, which has been empty for quite a long time. Pep&Co, family fashions and homeware, will join a growing list of “newcomers” to Boston including a butchers (not really a newcomer, but they have opened their second shop), a farm equipment manufacturer, B&M with their new store at Alban Retail Park, Pandora, a national jewellery chain, Maud’s, another jewellers, Wilcox and Carter’s expansion and Lildl, with plans to open a supermarket here. Pension Wise Boston Citizens Advice Bureau is hosting Pension Wise appointments to give people access to free and impartial pension guidance ❱ BY STUART HELLON
Boston Citizens Advice Bureau is hosting Pension Wise appointments to give people access to free and impartial pension guidance. Following pension reforms on 6 April 2015, people approaching retirement have greater freedom over how they can use their pension pots. People will be able to take a lump sum, take out an annuity or a mixture of both. Pension Wise is a new Government service designed to help people make sense of their pension options, and empower them to make the right choices for them. Boston Citizen Advice Bureau will be hosting free face to face Pension Wise sessions which are available to book now. The 45 minute appointments will be tailored to the individual, taking into account the value of their pension and their plans for retirement. Stuart Hellon, Chief Executive of Boston CAB said: “Lincoln CAB will be delivering Pension Wise appointments from Boston Bureau and a number of sites across the region, giving easy access to Pension Wise’’. “Pensions can be a confusing topic and Pension Wise appointments will help people to make sense of their pension choices. Boston Bureau already helps people with retirement issues and we’ll continue to offer this service outside of Pension Wise.” To book a telephone or face to face Pension Wise appointment, call 0300 330 1001. Alternatively, drop into the bureau to speak to one of our assessors who will assist you to arrange an appointment.
A Pension Wise appointment may help you if: • You are approaching retirement or are 50 or over. • Have a defined contribution pension. • Have not had a Pension Wise appointment before. Guidance appointments are also available on the telephone, delivered by the Pensions Advisory Service. People can also get information and general guidance online at www.pensionwise.gov.uk.

Divorce
When all else has failed Getting a divorce can feel like a demoralising and daunting task. We look at the process from start to finish
T
aking the decision to get a divorce can be a difficult and emotional one. If there is a lot to sort such as property, possessions and sorting arrangements for any children involved you must first begin by being absolutely sure that divorce is the right thing to do. If you are in any doubt then seek advice. Relationship counselling can help you to identify the issues you have and help you towards resolving them. If you feel you are past that and are sure that divorce is your best option then there are a series of steps you need to follow. You are eligible to divorce if you have been married at least a year and that marriage is legally recognised in the UK. You must also have a permanent residence in England or Wales. Grounds for divorce fall into five categories: 1) Adultery (your husband or wife had sex with someone else of the opposite sex) 2) Unreasonable behaviour (including violence, physical or verbal abuse, drunkenness or drug taking) 3) Desertion (you have been left without your agreement for more than 2 out of the last 2 and a half years) 4) You have lived apart for more than 2 years (you must both agree to the divorce) 5) You have lived apart for more than 5 years (enough to get a divorce without you both agreeing) You need to begin by filing a divorce petition. This is an application to the court for permission to divorce. It is at this point that you will have to give the reasons for your petition. If you and your spouse are in agreement about getting a divorce then you can apply for a decree nisi which is a court document confirming that there is no reason as to why you cannot get a divorce. After the decree nisi is granted you will need to wait 6 weeks before you can apply for your final document, a decree absolute. This legally ends your marriage. The 6 week waiting period will allow you to sort any details out regarding the divorce. If you both agree on the divorce and issues such as splitting possessions are straightforward then it is possible to arrange the divorce yourself. If you both agree to the divorce but are unable to fully agree on any issues that arise it may be possible to enter mediation to see if it can be sorted amicably on your 14 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN behalf. If your spouse disagrees with the divorce petition or there are many or complicated issues to be resolved before the divorce can be finalised such as finances or arrangements for children then it is good practice to hire a solicitor to handle everything for you. Hiring a solicitor can be beneficial in many ways. Firstly, a solicitor will have an expertise that you won’t when it comes to the legal aspects of divorce and will be able to offer objective advice. If communication between you and your spouse has broken down they will be able to communicate either with them or through their solicitor and negotiate terms of the divorce with detachment from the emotion that often causes argument. They will be able to remove some of the stress by completing all of the paperwork to allow you to concentrate on getting the divorce completed properly.
“If you both agree on the divorce and issues such as splitting possessions are straightforward then it is possible to arrange the divorce yourself.”

Maintain Your Health
Healthy Body, Healthy Mind We all work hard to be healthy, eating well and exercising as often as we can. Once we get to a good level of health and fitness we have to work hard to maintain them

ooking after ourselves gets more important the older we get and we can sometimes overlook the role that relaxation can play in keeping us happy and healthy. Here we take a look at a physical version of relaxation, yoga, and a more passive form, massage. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice or discipline which originated in India. There are a broad variety of schools but the most practiced here are Hatha yoga and Raja yoga. Practiced for thousands of years, but only recently introduced to the Western world, yoga is now a popular system of physical exercise as well as a spiritual and meditative tool. Today the physical postures of yoga are used to help alleviate health problems, reduce stress and help keep the back strong in a time when desk jobs make that a difficult task. The poses presented in yoga will stretch your muscles, tendons and connective tissue which means that over time you could see results which strengthen your core and limbs. The breathing techniques and meditative aspect can also be good for the mind as it can give you time to relax and focus. The NHS discusses the benefits of yoga at all ages for a wide range of conditions on their website www.nhs.uk mentioning that two
yoga sessions a week will go towards meeting guidelines on musclestrengthening activities. They also point out that you are never too old to start and indeed many people begin in their 70s to help them with balance, strength and help with conditions such as arthritis. Whilst books and DVDs are good it is always best to start with a class where an instructor can ensure that you are doing the moves correctly. If you are hoping to help a specific condition then speak to your instructor first to make sure they are familiar with the condition which will allow them to tailor your session. There are many reasons that people go for a massage, some to help with muscular conditions and some for the sheer relaxation element. There are lots of different types of massage so there will be one to suit the reason for your visit!! For people who play sports or work out regularly there is a sports massage designed to prevent sports injuries and treat them when they occur. For relaxation purposes the massage of choice is a Swedish massage which uses long strokes and deep circular movements. If you speak to anyone who regularly has a massage they will give you a wide variety of benefits to them and research is currently being carried out which looks at the benefits of using massage for anxiety, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, headaches, nerve pain and joint pain.

Weddings
Choosing the Perfect Venue When planning your wedding, getting the venue right is crucial. It’s also likely to be one of your biggest expenses so getting it right is crucial “If you are tying the knot in your local church then your reception venue will not want to be too far away from that.”
A
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
s with all things wedding you will need to know how much money you have to spend on your venue. Depending on your choice you may wish to break it down further (some venues will provide a complete service while others just the hire). Work out how much you would like to spend and then see which venues fit that budget. If you find this to be a stumbling block early on then you might like to think a little differently – perhaps a smaller wedding at a grander venue (or vice versa!) or be a brave bride-to-be and have a few venues in mind and look for cancellations and late availability to save money. The amount of guests you wish to invite will have an impact on your venue choice as some of the more intimate venues will only hold 30-40 whereas larger hotels and manor houses will hold a few hundred. Always double check numbers when you initially contact the venue. Take the opportunity to look at the rooms available to you – if you are having around 50 guests to the wedding but 250 for your evening reception then you won’t want to be in the same room for the entire day!! The location can be dictated by where you are actually getting married. If you are tying the knot in your local church then your reception venue will not want to
20 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
be too far away from that. If you want to get married at the same place as your reception the venue will need to be licensed but you are not constrained to staying immediately around the place where you live. Your Wedding theme must match up with your venue so, for example, if you are looking for something rustic you might like a marquee or a barn whereas if glitz and glamour is your thing then a hotel or manor house might be right up your street. If your venue has a wedding planner service then use it to see how you can tie up your theme with your venue. Many people prefer to marry locally so that they remain close to family and friends however, if you are thinking about a civil ceremony then the whole country is at your disposal. Staying local allows your planning to feel a little easier as you know the area and aren’t too far away for visits. Weddings abroad are also growing in popularity and many venues have their own wedding planner who will take care of everything for you, as well as ensuring all the legal aspects are looked after. If you want something completely different then there are some unusual venues in the UK where you can hold your reception, including a treehouse in Scotland, the Natural History Museum, Battersea Power Station, the Shark Aquarium at Alton Towers, a Sub-terranean lake in Cornwall and the HMS President in London.

Christmas Parties
Organising the Party With the busiest venues booking up fast, it’s never too early to start planning the office Christmas party ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
W
hether there are half a dozen people in your office or over 100 organising the Christmas party can seem like a daunting task. As with any party though there is a tried and tested method of organising effectively that can be followed. Begin by setting the date – if you work in a large company you will be extremely lucky if you manage to find a date to suit everyone so if that’s not possible you will have to choose a date which the majority of people are able to attend. Before you send out a selection of dates have a little ask around to see which would be the most suitable. You will then have an idea of numbers. Also think about the day, the type of party you have planned might dictate whether it is a daytime or evening event but think mid-week or end of the week (especially if there’s going to be plenty of drinking involved). You will then need to determine your budget. Is the company paying, or each person paying an agreed amount or a little of both. Knowing how much money you have to work with will help you to decide on a venue. It may also help you to decide whether you can include partners. Whatever your budget make sure you leave a contingency over for any unforeseen costs. When it comes to a Christmas party many people prefer to choose a venue which will do everything for you, from food and drink to table decorations and entertainment. Once you have your shortlist be sure to visit the venues and get a feel for what a party there will be like. Ask to see the menus and enquire

about the drink selection. Find out what entertainment will be on offer (because if there is none you might have to factor some in). Traditional entertainment is usually music and games (and increasingly karaoke) but newer forms of entertainment such as a photo booth, casino tables and table entertainers such as magaicians are becoming popular. Be sure to book early to avoid disappointment and pay any deposits at the time of booking to secure your party. Once you have booked your venue send out an invitation to everyone so they will have all the details to hand – the date, time, venue etc should be on there. You could also include taxi numbers to help people get home at the end of the evening. Take the opportunity to distribute menus and get people to choose their food in advance. Make sure you take a copy of their menus or create a master list however as people will have forgotten their order by the time your party comes around, especially if you are working a long way in advance. Just before the day re-confirm all of the details and check final numbers. Make sure everyone knows the full itinerary – where they have to be and when, especially if you are having food at one venue and drinks at another. Check how your hosts prefer to receive the balance of their payment and then go ahead and enjoy your evening.

Spalding Pumpkin Festival 2015 Head into Spalding town centre on October 9 and join the festivities
N
ow firmly established in the town’s calendar, save the date in your diaries because the perfect reason to celebrate the onset of autumn is just around the corner – the annual Spalding Pumpkin Festival. This hugely popular event, which attracts thousands of people to the town centre, takes place on Friday, October 9. The event is sponsored by David Bowman Pumpkins Ltd and supported by the Rotary Club of Spalding and Welland, Spalding Lions, Crescent Traders and Tulip Radio. Organised by South Holland District Council’s Community Development Team, this year’s event will feature a variety of entertainment, a fancy dress competition and the enchanting pumpkin parade. Led by the pumpkin coach with the winner of the fancy dress competition on board, the parade starts in the Sheep Market at 6.30pm and will wind its way around the town centre streets before finishing in New Road. The climax of the night is a fireworks display from the top of the South Holland Centre. Before all of this though, there will be a charity market all day, street entertainment, activities and competitions throughout the day.

Remove the seeds from the pumpkin, wash and dry. Line a baking tray with parchment and spread the seeds onto them. Put into the oven until they are dry. Coat them well with the mixture and return them to the oven until golden brown.

Home Improvement
Insulating Your Home With the cold weather on its way now is a good time to make sure your home stays warm this winter
E
nergy prices are always in the news as they climb ever higher. It’s especially annoying as the colder months see us using more energy as we heat our homes. More and more of us are taking to the internet to use price comparison websites to find the lowest tariffs but there are things that you can do to your home to ensure that when you do heat your house you are not losing that heat to the outside. We all know that heat rises so the first place to look at is your loft. An uninsulated or poorly insulated loft can be responsible for you losing up to a quarter of your heat through the roof. The thickness of your insulation should be at least 270mm of blanket-style glass or mineral wool. If you already have insulation in your loft check its thickness. Should you have none or wish to re-insulate to bring it up to current guidelines and your loft has easy access then it is possible to insulate it yourself. You can buy rolls of insulation from your nearest DIY store which will roll our between the joists then roll over the top. The rolls are built to last so they will pay for themselves many times over. If you are at all uncertain about what to do then use a professional installation team. Once you have put in all the time and effort to insulate your loft, as a last job make sure you put some draught excluding strips on your loft hatch to ensure that there are no draughts coming back down into your home. Once you have sorted your loft then it’s time to take a look at your walls. According to the Energy Saving Trust, in an uninsulated home you can lose

“Lagging water tanks and pipes and insulating behind radiators reduces the amount of heat lost.”
“According to the Energy Saving Trust, in an uninsulated home you can lose around one third of your heat through the walls.”
around one third of your heat through the walls. Most houses built since the 1990s will have wall insulation. If your home is not insulated and has cavity walls then you can have cavity wall insulation to stop the escape of the heat. The process involved an installer drilling small holes in the outside walls of your home and then uses specialist equipment to blow insulation in through the holes. Once the insulation is in the installer will fill in the holes made in the brickwork so you will barely be able to see where they have been. Due to its specialist nature this work must be carried out by a professional installer but your disruption will be minimal and it is work which can be carried out in just a few hours. After that you can think about your central heating and hot water. Lagging water tanks and pipes and insulating behind radiators reduces the amount of heat lost. The Energy Saving Trust recommends the fitting of a British Standard Jacket over your hot water tank as it will reduce your heat loss by around three quarters. Similarly, insulating your pipes will keep your hot water hotter for longer. Radiator reflector panels behind your radiators is a cost effective way of conserving heat. By placing a reflective panel behind your radiator any heat is reflected back into the room so less heat is lost through the walls behind the radiators.

Gardening
Planting Bulbs this Autumn Now is a great time to be planting your spring flowering bulbs. Adrian Nind, Managing Director at Bakker Spalding Garden Company, gives his five top tips for your Autumn gardening 1. Preparation is key The first step is to remove weeds and incorporate lots of compost or other organic matter when planting your bulbs. Bulbs grown in pots need good drainage so put plenty of pot shards in the bottom and use well-drained compost.
2. Select your bulbs early With so many stunning spring flowers to choose from, selecting your flower bulbs is something you should do at an early stage. A recent survey we conducted revealed that the favourite colour plants here in the UK are red (23.5%) followed by purple (17.6%). We’ve seen a great deal of interest in our wide variety of tulips this year, including the ‘Exquisit’ tulip which resembles a double peony and the ‘Tropical Wave’ tulip which has a fantastic double yellow goblet.
3. Have your bulbs delivered just before you intend to plant them Bulbs are sent directly from the nursery and are in optimum condition for planting. If you can’t plant them straight away, unpack the bulbs as soon as they arrive. Place them in a dry, dark place under 20°C and open the bags so that air can circulate.
4. Plant your bulbs correctly Bulbs have very particular planting requirements, and should be planted in holes three to four times as deep as the bulb itself. Plant your bulbs in groups of at least six to ensure optimum results, and if you are unsure on which way the bulb should go into the soil, plant the bulb on its side: its stem will find its own way up to the surface!
5. Don’t forget to prepare your bulbs for next year! We recommend feeding your tulip bulbs immediately after flowering – this gives the bulb time to store enough nutrients to ensure profuse flowering the following spring.
“Bulbs grown in pots need good drainage so put plenty of pot shards in the bottom and use well-drained compost.”

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY
eep is celebrating its most fruitful year in Britain ever. It is a vital market for the company because we Brits buy more Cherokees than anywhere else in Europe or Africa. The American auto maker aims to echo this success in 2016. But how is it going to do it? Well, one way is to give the admired Cherokee line-up more ‘oomph’. So, that’s why the good-looking Jeep is now obtainable with 185hp and 200hp outputs. It offers an appreciably wider spread of pulling power from low revs, giving greater bang for your buck. But it isn’t just about enriched performance, the 2.2 Cherokee oil-burner now offers better fuel economy than the departing two-litre 170hp automatic lump. Available only with Jeep’s smooth changing nine-speed automatic gearbox, and paired to the company’s Active-Drive four-wheeldrive systems, the all new Cherokee 2.2 versions are inundated with equipment. The range now has more spec as standard, including an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, an automatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror with built-in microphone and an electric
30 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
tailgate. Perhaps more significantly, though, all Cherokees score highly with safety – achieving the maximum 5-stars in Euro NCAP’s tough tests. But back to the new engine under the bonnet. It is assembled for our market in the Pratola Serra plant, near Avellino, Italy. Armed with the 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I system, the Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp reaches a maximum speed of 127mph. It accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.5 seconds, has a typical combined fuel consumption figure of 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 150g/km. The Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp with Active Drive II and lowrange has a top speed of 126mph, 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds, and a combined fuel consumption of 46.3mpg, with 160g/km of CO2 emissions. Finally, Longitude and Longitude+ trim levels are provided with a 2.2 MultiJet II 185hp variant, in combination with 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I and the nine-speed automatic transmission. Prepared in this way, the Cherokee reaches a maximum speed of 125mph and gets from zero to 62mph in 8.8 seconds. Combined fuel economy and emissions are 49.5mpg and
150g/km. Behind the wheel of the quickest diesel – the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic with Active Drive I - I found everything rapid enough. Certainly, the more commanding motor is a real step-up from the unit it supersedes. You no longer have to work the engine like a dog to make spirited progress. It is even quite soothing when you’re not pushing the pace. Undeniably, one of the Cherokee’s fortes is its ride. For a midsized sport utility vehicle (SUV) with off-road know-how, the Cherokee handles adeptly. The only time you notice the Jeep get a little unsettled is if you throw it in to a bend. Then there is perceptible body roll. The new 2.2 MultiJet II engine certainly places the Jeep Cherokee towards the crest of the mid-size SUV class for pace, poise and proper efficiency. It is no BMW X3 but it brings the fight to the likes of Honda’s CR-V – and is sure to put the fabled motor manufacturer on track for even more success in the United Kingdom next year. The Jeep Cherokee range starts at £26,095 for the 2.0 MultiJet II 140hp Longitude FWD manual, rising to £37,995 for the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic.
