Peter’s Notes

For me my summer holiday is over – we spent a lovely week in Portugal but for many this month is all about jetting off or packing up the car for the annual vacation. I have to say I do have lots of envy at my friends and family who are about to leave for warmer locations. I am now down to single figure weeks for my upcoming nuptials and I have to say a little bit of panic has crept in. What have I forgotten? What will the weather be like? And the one thing we still aren’t able to decide on is flowers and with an impending deadline we need to make decisions and fast! The scary thing for me is the next time I write my welcome will be my last as a Willerton and a single lady – that will make it seem all the more real come 4 weeks’ time. I hope whatever your plans for the summer holidays it’s full of sun, fun and happy memories. Until next month.

Memorial appeal Generous donations continue to come in for the borough’s memorial to mark the centenary of the First World War. The latest is £200 from Old Leake Parish Council. Donations made so far, by the public, councillors, parish councils, businesses, groups and schools, have taken the fund well over the half way mark towards the total cost of £4,200. Appeal organiser, Andrew Malkin, Boston Borough Council’s communications manager, said: “The aim has always been to raise the memorial by public subscription and dedicate it to the people, by the people. It is an opportunity for all those who care about the hard-won freedoms we all enjoy today to show that by honouring the many lives sacrificed 100 years ago. “We are getting there but would welcome any donation, no matter how small. All who give will have their donation recognised by having their name, not the amount they have given, listed on a public scroll of honour.” The appeal has been launched by Boston Borough Council, Boston and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, Boston Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, Canal Zoners and the Boston Veterans Memorial Plaque Committee. You can make a donation to the appeal using the council’s online payment facility at www.boston.gov.uk – go to “Donations to WW1 Memorial Appeal - using a debit or credit card; in person at the Municipal Buildings using a debit or credit card, cheque
or cash; or by post using a cheque. Cheques should be made payable to Boston Borough Council and “Boston First World War Memorial Appeal” should be written on the reverse to indicate what the payment is for. Frank Thompson, of the Boston Veterans Memorial Plaque Committee, will be collecting for the memorial at the town’s Asda store on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, June 26, 27 and 29. A late change of plan will ensure the memorial will stand proud in Boston’s Memorial Gardens for generations to come – a mark of tribute and thanks for the 843 from this area who gave their lives and others who were casualties 100 years ago. Representatives of ex-servicemen’s groups in the borough advised that they would prefer to see a more traditional stone memorial in Boston’s Memorial Gardens rather than an earlier proposal for a pair of ornate handcrafted memorial benches. The veterans had initial concerns about the addition of a single stone memorial upsetting the symmetry and balance of the carefullydesigned gardens. The benches had been accepted as an affordable and acceptable compromise until a local stonemason made a very generous offer of a memorial in granite, free of any charge for labour. Memorial stonemason Richard King, of Long Sutton, said: “I wanted to show support
for such a worthy cause and offered to waive my labour costs so the appeal fund only has to pay for materials and delivery and installation. My family has relatives who died in the First World War so this project means a lot to me.” The larger-scale memorial offered by Mr King overcomes initial objections to a single memorial which it was felt would clash with a pair of similar smaller memorials already in Memorial Gardens, upsetting the symmetry. It has been proposed to site the new memorial in a line between the main war memorial and the flagpole. One face on the memorial will be left blank for engraving in four years to mark the end of the centenary of the First World War. It is planned to dedicate the new memorial at this year’s Armistice Day ceremony on November 11. There will be a service of commemoration in Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, August 4, to mark the 100-year anniversary of the very day that war was declared. “In an ideal world we would have had the dedication of the new memorial on this day in August. But we wanted to be sure that we achieved the best for Boston and for the Memorial Gardens – the memorial will be there for a long time to come. “We are very grateful to Mr King for his very generous offer. The memorial is much grander than anything we had hoped for and its dedication on this Armistice Day, 100 years on from the start of the war, will have added poignancy.”
Church Celebrations There are celebrations abound in the Boston area this year as parishoners celebrate 900 years of the building of St. Guthlac’s first stone church in Fishtoft, the 1300th anniversary of the death of Guthlac in April 11th 714 and the 18th anniversary of Reverend Marc Cooper’s arrival at Fishtoft. On Sunday April 6th Bishop Christopher came to lead a service of remembrance. A Family Service incorporating the story of Guthlac’s life was held. The Chancel was lined with reeds, through which the congregation walked. In the sanctuary there was a model of a wattle and daub hut standing before the altar. This was the sort of dwelling that Guthlac would have lived in at Crowland in the fens of Lincolnshire. 4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
The Mayor of Boston and Councillors from Boston and the Parish came to help celebrate. On Saturday 16th August there will be a village gala day on the playing field in Fishtoft, with a stall telling people about St. Guthlac’s and inviting people to hang prayers on a Prayer Tree. These prayers will then be incorporated in an Open Air Service, which Revd Marc Cooper will be leading, on the playing field the following day. The following weekend, August 23/24/25, will be a Flower Festival entitled ‘God’s Garden’ in our Church, in which we will depict St. Guthlac in flowers in the Sanctuary. The church will also be decorated with arrangements to commemorate the lives of loved ones.
On the evening of Friday 22nd there will be a cheese and wine evening with music by the Haven Singers and on Sunday evening at 6.30pm there will be a ‘Songs of Praise’ service.

Commons’ immigration seminar A Westminster conference has heard how Boston is leading the way on impact of immigration issues, rogue landlords and street drinking. Cllr Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, and Cllr Paul Kenny, chairman of the group which published a report on the impact of population change in Boston, both spoke to MPs at the House of Commons in London. The seminar of the East Midlands Strategic Migration Group, which Cllr Kenny chairs, with the East Midlands All Parliamentary Party Group (APPG) of MPs and leaders of councils in the East Midlands, heard about efforts already being made in Boston to counter some of the negative impacts of population change. Cllr Bedford said: “There was much interest in the work we are doing
around rogue landlords, which is producing good results, and support for my appeal for Government funding for this for the next two years.” Alan Hardwick, Lincolnshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, recommended the council’s impact of population change as essential reading. He said it pointed the way for issues requiring examination by any area experiencing population change. Cllr Bedford said: “Boston is leading the way on this, working with rogue landlords and controls on street drinking. As a small borough in rural Lincolnshire we have tackled issues around a taboo subject which are now being taken up nationally by MPs and Government.” Cllr Kenny presented
an overview of population change and local impact. The summit brought together key decision-makers on migration at national and local level to identify and explore the key issues as they affect local communities and the provision of public services in the East Midlands. It will support the development of a report to be presented to Government in the summer. Boston Borough Council has already received a national award from the national Centre for Public Scrutiny for its work on population change. Cllr Paul Kenny, who chaired the in-depth investigation in Boston into the impact of population change, joined the Centre for Public Scrutiny judging panel to short list entries for this year’s awards.
Wrangle play area opens Wrangle’s red letter day on June 27 was celebrated by all 72 pupils from the village primary school, for the big occasion was all for them – the official opening of a new play area on the village playing field. The children christened all the new equipment – from the more sedate and traditional swings and slide through to thrilling ultra-modern equipment such as the multi-passenger snake ride. Parish council chairman, Cllr George Danby, explained that older play equipment in the field had to be taken away as it became unusable. The new fenced play area was installed thanks to a £67,617 grant from WREN (from the Landfill Communities Fund), £8,000 from the parish council, £5,000 from Wrangle Consolidated
Charities and a £500 donation from Cllr Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, from Lincolnshire County Council’s Big Society Fund.

Lights Out A famous war time quote referred to lamps going out all over Europe. Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey added, in August, 1914, “We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime”. He made his famous statement as Britain’s ultimatum to Germany was about to expire, plunging us into the First World War. LIGHTS OUT is an invitation for everyone to mark the centenary of the beginning of the First World War by turning their lights out… all except one, for a shared national moment of reflection from 10pm to 11pm on Monday, August 4. Boston Borough Council will leave just a single light burning in its buildings and will light a candle to burn for the hour at the War Memorial in Memorial Gardens. Boston Police Cadets will maintain a vigil over the candle for the hour. At the same time a candlelit vigil will be kept at Westminster Abbey Cllr Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “I am appealing for all who live and do business in the borough to observe the lights out hour and leave just a single light on, displayed through a window. “Single lights dotted throughout the town and villages will have a real poignancy and will demonstrate our gratitude for the actions of those who made such sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy today.” Those who join in LIGHTS OUT will be among people across the four nations, and will be part of official commemorations of the centenary. If you belong to a group or organisation planning to mark the event in your own special way could you please let the council know. Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston The council’s end-of-year performance report shows progress we have made and my thanks go to members, staff and borough residents for the way in which we have managed some of the most difficult times. A constant theme during this period of intense austerity has been doing more with less. There have been a number of successes, which will be highlighted in our annual report when it comes out shortly. But we will not be resting on our laurels – the report will also tell the truth about areas where we still need to do better. There has been good news on revitalising and promoting the town and borough – footfall went up by three per cent in 2013/14, reversing a downward trend which had persisted for the previous three years. Empty shops in the town centre this April were down to 13.6 per cent compared with 15.3 per cent the previous year. And unemployment in Boston fell from 3.4 per cent to 2.5 per cent. We will be examining reasons for a decline in car parking tickets sold and a small reduction in market occupancy, although that bounced back up ahead of target in March. The crime rate saw a small fall in 2013/14, with big decreases in domestic burglary, vehicle crime and criminal damage. It is pleasing to note a 22.7 per cent reduction in incidents of anti-social behaviour. We are catching up on a backlog of food safety inspections and have met or exceeded our targets for improving housing standards and helping provide affordable homes. There were 33 per cent fewer incidents of fly tipping, an increase in recycling and composting rates and more borough residents were enjoying healthy walks and visits to the Geoff Moulder swimming pools. Our council tax and business rates collections were above target. Our Have Your Say survey for 2013/14 showed an increase in people’s satisfaction rates with the council and the areas people
live in. Refuse, recycling and garden waste collections showed the highest satisfaction levels. Sadly, one of the highest dissatisfaction levels remains street cleanliness – a new environmental crime strategy has been drawn up to deal with this. But it must be remembered that the cause is people who litter, fly tip and refuse to take responsibility for their own waste. On the financial side we ended the year with a £41,000 revenue budget underspend and had additional income from planning services, sharing our office space and more customers through the doors at the swimming pools and gym. We invested in our CCTV system – helping to make Boston a safer place to be. The borough council has been doing good work tackling rogue landlords thanks in part to some extra Government funding we received. Which is why we will be making a bid for two further years funding for this important work. The £41,000 underspend from last year’s budget assisted with the work tackling rogue landlords and Cabinet has approved reallocation of a further £97,386 New Homes Bonus funding to support this important work. Many in the Boston area in the private sector are good landlords who, while we appreciate they let property as a business, do care about their tenants and pay heed to what the law requires. They have nothing to worry about. Those who are rogue landlords will receive a visit from our enforcement team, and they certainly do have something to worry about. The main thrust of our work is to ensure that tenants are living in accommodation which is suitable and meets current safety and hygiene standards. We are now dealing with quite a number of cases where there are concerns about levels between floors, fire risks, unsafe electrical systems, unsuitable kitchen conditions and general hygiene and safety issues. We are also looking at overcrowding and, in the case of licensable homes of multiple occupation (HMOs) that all licence conditions are being met.

With summer here the garden is blooming. Green shoots are springing up all over perhaps a few too many?
H
edges can become a problem at this time of year. If your neighbour’s hedge is getting out of control, read on … The best way to deal with the issue is to talk to your neighbour. You have to continue to live near each other and it is better if you are on good terms. Calling in the council or going to court might make matters worse. Before you speak to your neighbour, think about what the problem really is and how it affects you. For instance, does the hedge block the light to the main rooms in your house so that you have to keep the lights on all the time? Is it pushing over your fence? Are the roots damaging your path and making it dangerous? Decide what you want. How much smaller would you like the hedge to be? How can it be kept to this size? Meet the neighbour face to face. This is usually better than pushing a note through the door. Don’t rush them into a discussion – they need time to think as well. Invite the neighbour into your home so that they can see things from your side of the hedge. It may be more difficult if you have already fallen out with your neighbour over the hedge. In this case you might want to make the first contact by letter, but be very careful what you say. Don’t be rude or angry – this will only make things worse. It is in both your interests to try and sort things out so stay cool and calm. Focus on the way forward
rather than past disagreements. If you can meet with your neighbour, be prepared to be honest and say how you feel. Don’t accuse, insult or blame and don’t charge in with a list of demands. Be prepared to listen to your neighbour’s point of view without interrupting, even if you don’t agree. Only by trying to understand each other’s point of view will you reach a lasting solution. If your neighbour refuses to discuss the problem you could try mediation.

Mediators are totally impartial. They don’t tell you what to do but help you and your neighbour to work towards finding your own answer. You can approach them even if your neighbour hasn’t yet agreed to take part. But for mediation to be a success, both you and your neighbour must co-operate in the process. The Citizens Advice Bureau can advise you further on mediation and what to do if all your efforts have failed to find a solution.

Crackdown on BIG 3 property crimes
Boston’s Community Policing teams are launching a three-strand crime prevention initiative aimed at reducing the three main property crimes that affect people the most in the town
O
f all crimes, Boston residents are statistically more likely to become a victim of domestic burglary, theft from motor vehicle or theft of bicycle than any other crime. The most serious and upsetting of these is domestic burglary which can have a profound effect on victims that lasts for years. Particularly in the summer months, a number of burglaries occur because people have left doors unlocked or large windows open that can be easily seen and accessed by criminals. As part of the crime prevention initiative, officers out on patrol will be actively looking for unattended, insecure property and they will leave a crime prevention leaflet through the door pointing out the particular insecurity in that property. In a similar way, officers will also be looking out for insecure vehicles or ones where valuables have been left clearly in view of potential thieves. When such a vehicle is seen, they will try and locate the owner if they are nearby, or otherwise write them a letter. Boston also sees an increase in thefts of bicycles during the warmer months of the year, as people use their bikes more. To combat this, Boston officers are making use of a “Sting Bike “, a normal bicycle in every respect apart from one interesting modification; a covert tracking device that can be monitored by Police. “The “Sting Bike” is placed in various locations around the town and we simply wait for it to be stolen. As soon as the thief moves the bike, it sends a message to us and we can follow its movements, allowing us to capture the thief and recover the bike”.
PCSO Marie Williams 07799 581739
12 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
In addition to the sting bike, officers are also using a more overt two-wheeled deterrent. Thanks to staff and students at Boston College, a bicycle has been given a high-visibility makeover bearing the message to potential bike thieves that they are being watched. Engineering Programme Area Manager, Lee Crisp, said, “It has been a great opportunity for students to be involved in a hands-on exercise that has given them practical experience in dismantling and rebuilding a bicycle whilst at the same time highlighting the issue of theft. Many college students are cyclists and could potentially become victims of bike theft so we’re happy to support local police and we’re looking forward to running the project again with next year’s students”. What I wish to say to people is please take care of your property and don’t leave it vulnerable to thieves. Some people say that if someone wants to steal something they will anyway, whatever the measures taken to protect it. This simply isn’t true. Many thieves are pure opportunists who don’t set out to steal but when confronted with something that is an easy target, they can’t help themselves and steal it. The harder you make something to steal, the less chance you have of it being stolen. Please do your bit to protect your property and we will do ours and together we can lower your chances of being a victim of the three big property crimes.

Antiques Roadshow
The Antiques Roadshow comes to Belton ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Do you suspect there’s a Leonardo in your loft or some Clarice Cliff in your cupboards? Well this summer’s your chance to find out!
A
“The record for the most expensive item has stood since 2008, when a bronze prototype scale model of Antony Gormley’s sculpture Angel of the North was given a stunning valuation of £1 million...”
14 | www.simplyboston.co.uk
s if a visit to the beautiful Belton House and grounds wasn’t enough of an incentive to get in the car and head off for a day out, July 31 sees the Antiques Roadshow filming there for their new series. Following its tried and tested format, some of Britain’s leading antique and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors. If you think that you have a valuable antique in your possession or own a piece that is a mystery to you then now is the time to get it out and find out if it is indeed a treasure or simply full of sentimental value. Doors are open from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Fiona Bruce is again presenting, and this will be her seventh series. Series editor Simon Shaw says: “Fiona and the team are really looking forward to their visit. Although we can never predict what will come to light, every show brings big surprises, which is what makes working on the show so exciting. So, on behalf of all of the experts, we’re asking the people of Lincolnshire to dig out their treasures!” Will Belton House be the setting of the Roadshow’s biggest ever find? Only time will tell. The record for the most expensive item has stood since 2008, when a bronze prototype scale model of Antony Gormley’s sculpture Angel of the North was given a stunning valuation of £1 million by expert Philip Mould. Imagine taking that back home on the bus! Surely
“Fiona and the team are really looking forward to their visit. Although we can never predict what will come to light, every show brings big surprises, which is what makes working on the show so exciting.” with so many categories of antique it is only a matter of time before that valuation is smashed again. If you are undecided about whether or not to go, the trick is to be brave. If you have an inkling that you might have something with historical interest then don’t hesitate, even if it is small or not particularly attractive. And conversely, don’t let the size of your antiques put you off, if you have large pieces of furniture or other big items then before you bring them out you can first send details and photographs to: Antiques Roadshow, BBC, Whiteladies Road, Bristol BS8 2LR. By starting in this way it saves you a wasted journey with a large piece. If the details you send are of interest to the Antiques Roadshow team it may be possible to arrange to look at the item in advance and organise transportation to the venue. And be prepared to laugh it off if it is worth very little. If nothing else you will have had a great day out. So fingers crossed for fine weather, wear comfortable shoes in case of queuing and the best of luck – let’s hope you are sitting looking at some treasure!

Focus on Skegness
Family Days Out â?ą BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
A
With a rich history, any trip to Skegness must include a visit to the Embassy Theatre
day out in Skegness provides you with a wealth of entertainment options. Whatever you like to do, be it very little or an action packed few hours then you will find something for you. Most visits start with a trip to the golden sands of the beach with an ice cream and a donkey ride thrown in for the kids. If the beach is a little too sedate for you then you can sample the Laser Quest, Butlins, Skegness Pier or the Pleasure Beach. But whilst there is a wide choice during the day, the evenings well and truly belong to The Embassy Theatre. Operating all year round with a dedicated team of over 30 people, who have a strong passion for the work they do, along with a team of very willing volunteers, they work hard to provide top class entertainment. The sheer variety of shows is staggering with a comedian performing one day and an ice show on the next. The entertainment listings are hotly anticipated each year as you never know what you are going to see next. Built in 1926 the first Embassy building, known as The Piazza, dominated the Grand Parade. Rather than a theatre it began as a dance hall where a small orchestra provided the music. Over time its popularity grew and became a staple for those visiting. Sadly, in January 1978, the Pier was destroyed in a storm leaving the theatre stranded at sea. The Embassy was rebuilt as an auditorium in 1982. It remained that way until 1999 when another redevelopment saw it massively expand. As well as expansion of the auditorium the area surrounding it
was also developed to include an outdoor pool, chalets, a health and fitness suite, letting units and an arts room. Since then the Embassy has become a mainstay during the summer season with stars returning again and again. Hundreds of stars from all areas of entertainment have performed at the Embassy over the years including: George Formby, Danny La Rue, Des O’Connor, Rod Hull & Emu, Barbara Dickson, David Essex, Norman Wisdom, Ruthie Henshall, Chinese State Circus, Eddie Floyd, Geno Washington, Frankie Vaughan, Eartha Kitt, Alan Carr, The Drifters, Billy Ocean, Al Murray, Lenny Henry, Jim Davidson, Brian Conley, Jimmy Carr, Jason Donovan, Danni Minogue, Joe Pasquale, Peter Andre, Lee Mead and Jools Holland. As well as special events the Embassy hosts many other events which are community based. It works closely with the local schools, many of whom use it for their end of year speech days. It also holds regular blood donor sessions and the theatre becomes the hub for many varied events such as Get Safe For Summer and the SO Festival along with being the chosen venue for a variety of conferences. Due to the size of the venue it is also hugely popular during pantomime season.

Diamond Vapours This family run business is doing its bit to stop Boston smoking, one customer at a time…
“After the consultation comes the fun part, choosing your preferences!”
2 South Street Boston Lincs PE21 6HE
D
iamond Vapours are an e-cigarette and e-liquid specialist based at South Street in Boston. They are on a big mission, to stop all things smoke related. Along with their 2 other shops in Lincoln in Gainsborough they offer a light and airy environment for you to come along and learn more about what they have to offer and take the first step towards becoming smoke free. E-cigarettes are battery powered vapourisers which mimic smoking by producing vapour which looks like smoke by using a heating element to vapourise e-liquid. Whilst early e-cigarettes looked just like a regular tobacco cigarette, today they look very different. Using e-cigarettes and e-liquids are a great way of slowly reducing your nicotine intake, your hands still have something to do and you can come away from the cigarette flavour and choose from the 50 flavours in store. If you are thinking about stopping smoking then the best thing to do is to come into the store and take advantage of the knowledge and experience of the staff. By asking a few quick questions such as how many cigarettes a day you currently smoke and how you would best like to stop (gradually or quickly), they will be able to establish the right products for you. Each flavour is available with differing strengths of nicotine ranging from 24mg to none at all. After the consultation comes the fun part, choosing your preferences! Firstly you need to choose your battery size and these come in a variety of colours from plain black to blinged pink. Then you can start to take a look at flavours of which there are many. You can choose anything from a cigarette flavour to some of the more fun and quirky flavours such as lemon sherbet and cherry cola. Diamond Vapours offer a ‘try before you buy’ service so you can make sure you enjoy the flavours you have chosen before you purchase them. A starter pack is available for just £28 which includes • your ecigarette • battery • charger • starter liquids • Comes with safety bag After top up cost add 3 for £10. After that all you need to do is pop back for top-up liquids. Top ups cost just £4 a bottle and should last just under a week, dependent on how many times you use
it. Compare that to how much you spend on cigarettes in a month and you will see the financial benefit on top of the obvious health benefits. After its initial charge, the battery will only need to be charged for around an hour and will last all day. Diamond Vapours work hard to ensure that their prices are comparable to those you will find online. All e-liquids stocked by Diamond Vapours are UK made and certified. The ingredients are simply glycerine, distilled water, flavouring and nicotine (or not, as in the case of the nicotine free versions). With conventional cigarettes containing over 7000 ingredients, many of which are carcinogenic, your body will thank you for making the switch. If you are thinking about giving it a try then now really is the best time -

Pub Grub
Pub Grub ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
T
Gone are the days of a ‘Pie and a Pint’, these days the food a pub has to offer can be as important as the drink
oday people will travel great distances to pubs with a reputation for good food, and those who have sampled it are only too happy to shout about it, with websites like TripAdvisor allowing you to evaluate the experiences of others before trying it yourself. Pubs which are renowned for their food are often known for a specific type of food, with the most popular being Sunday Roast. Sunday lunch is a meal increasingly eaten out rather than at home. It’s a great opportunity for the whole family to get together, enjoy a good meal and each other’s company. Carvery is the most popular choice with cooked meat being freshly sliced as you stand there and you are able to take your choice from freshly prepared vegetables and trimmings. It gives traditional Sunday lunch a much larger selection that you could put out on your dining room table at home! Traditional pub fayre is also making something of a comeback with gourmet versions of old favourites such as pies and fish and chips back on the menu. Another regular staple is the Specials Board which adds further variety to the menu. This usually consists of dishes you wouldn’t make for yourself at home and can make a nice change to your usual diet. You can expect to find a wide variety of fish on these boards! Some pubs will also be more than happy to recommend the best drink to have with your meal to make it a truly all round experience. Children’s menus are also becoming more varied and healthier than ever – no more chicken in a basket for the kids!!
Sharing platters are really popular at the moment with people going to the pub in the early evenings for a drink and a quick bite to eat. These usually have something for everyone and is easier than having sandwiches or choosing some side dishes between you. Aside from anything else it makes a pub meal a really social experience – just remember to order enough of the bits that everyone likes the most to avoid any fights! Have a quick look at the pub boards and you will see theme nights which offer just about anything you can think of! There are taster nights which give you the chance to sample many items from the menu which you might normally otherwise not order. There are theme nights from around the world – curry night, Mexican and Tapas to name but a few. There is also the ever popular Steak night. During the summer months many pubs will put on a barbeque at the weekends, often with some sort of live entertainment – usually a local band. On a warm day it can be a real treat for the whole family and saves you the job of doing it at home! Local produce is also a prominent feature in the best pubs. As well as tasting good as it is food which is in season and hasn’t had to travel, it also supports local businesses who supply vegetables, meat and other ingredients. There is nothing better than eating a meal which has been grown and produced locally. So don’t pay too much heed to what you have heard from others, get out there and start trying different pubs for yourself and be brave – try something you’ve never had before, don’t be afraid to deviate from the main menu as any good chef will be happy to cook to your requirements. Bon appetit!

Gardening
Summer Pond care ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Ensure your pond is at its very best throughout the summer “It is a wise precaution to place a net over your pond during the summer...”
P
onds make a great addition to any garden large or small. They not only look fantastic but are great for attracting wildlife. A well-stocked pond with both fish and plants can look good all year round but, like most other things in the garden, require more care than usual during the summer months.
Weeds Be wary of your plants overgrowing during the summer as they can be dangerous to your fish. Floating weeds are easily dealt with as they can be removed with a net with minimal disruption. For plants whose roots are out of control this may be a trickier job but it is important to get the job done to prevent further problems. Generally, the more soil or gravel you have at the bottom of your pond, the more you will struggle with your plants firmly establishing themselves. Where possible, when you put your plants in the pond for the first time, try to avoid putting them in with pots of soil. As a rule of thumb, make sure your plants cover no more than half of the surface of your pond.
Water When the weather is hot and sunny water will evaporate from your pond so you need to keep an eye
on water levels to ensure that your fish have enough oxygen. Regular top ups are recommended however make sure you are not replacing more than a third of the water at a time as this can be just as hazardous for the occupants of the pond as not having enough. If you want to use tap water then most garden centres provide water treatments to make it safe for your fish or if you have a water butt the water from there is best. Remember to check the temperature of the water before you add it – how would you like a cold bath?! Also consider a fountain, waterfall or other water feature to keep the water moving.
Fish If your pond does not already have one, it is a wise precaution to place a net over your pond during the summer. Birds, especially herons, are more active during the summer months and once they have found an easy source of food they will return until there is nothing left. Your pond plants will do a good job of hiding the fish but a net always makes the best deterrent. Birds can also bring disease with them so you will need to keep a closer eye on your fish than during the winter. If you can see that your fish are diseased or have the feeling that something isn’t quite right then head to your local garden centre or aquatic centre as they will not only be able to offer you their expertise but help you to diagnose and treat any disease, hopefully before you lose any of your fish.

Update and Refresh Your Home ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
It’s amazing how little you have to change in your home to give it a completely new appearance
W
“One of the biggest things you can do to change the look of your home is to declutter.”
ith styles and tastes forever changing, it is easy to feel that the best way forward is to completely redecorate from top to bottom. But there is a quicker, easier and cheaper way of bringing your house up to date – small changes in the places where it matters most. When buying and selling houses you will often hear the phrase “kerb appeal” banded about. It essentially means making your home look appealing from first glance – enticing potential buyers through your door! So if you are looking to give your home a bit of a facelift then the best place to start is the front door. Every time you come and go from the house you see your front door and so do your visitors. It can be surprising what a difference this can make. There’s no need to rush out and buy a new front door. If it is wood then a fresh coat of paint - maybe be daring and try a new colour – can work wonders. If it is a UPVC door then think new door furniture, handles and knockers. Inside, before you change your furniture, try breathing new life into your walls. In the living room a fresh coat of paint on the walls, even in the same colour as you currently have, can freshen it up. Feature walls are becoming more popular – covering one wall in a room with a bold wallpaper or even a mural. If you are keeping your walls plain then changing fabrics and textiles can make a difference. New curtains and blinds can completely transform the look of a room and new cushions can revive a tired sofa. Changing lighting can also give a different ambience to a room. Spotlights, uplights, downlights, lamps and lampshades can all be used to provide comfortable evening lighting. Adding mirrors can also provide light and often makes a room look bigger. For many, the kitchen is the heart of the home and so most of the time at home is spent there. Before rushing

to replace your kitchen consider painting your current kitchen cabinets. If you’re not feeling brave enough then call in the professionals but changing from a dark wood to a cream colour will mean that you end up with a kitchen which looks up to date without having to remove a single unit! There is also the option to leave the shell of the kitchen the same and replace door fronts and handles. New taps can also look effective. One of the biggest things you can do to change the look of your home is to declutter. This is often easier said than done! Begin with the easy things such as putting winter blankets into storage. Look at areas which are congested and before throwing everything out consider the rest of the space in your house. Use it creatively – take full advantage of nooks and crannies. Are you using the space you have to its fullest potential? Shelves are not just for books! If paperwork is cluttering you up then have a dedicated filing drawer or cabinet so you can keep it all in one place and it is easily accessible. Assess how often you use things – do you really need them? The same goes for clothes, if you haven’t worn them within the last six months then it is time to donate them to charity. And also books you will never read again, DVDs you will never watch again and CDs you have never listened to! They can all go and you won’t even notice! By making small changes as you go and being clever about space, before you know it your house will be transformed without your pocket being significantly lighter.

Swineshead Pre-School
earching for the right Pre School for your children can be a long process as it is so important to make the right decision the first time. When you come to visit potential Pre Schools you will have a list as long as your arm of both general and very specific questions. Swineshead Pre School have a list of answers just as long and are just waiting for you to ask! The Pre School has been at its present site at Northend since 1985, moving into their purpose built building in 2006. They have three classrooms and are able to accommodate 65 children at any one time. They welcome children from the ages of 2-8 during term time and the holidays if necessary. They are open every day from 8am to 4pm at a cost of £3.25 per hour for all ages. Early years entitlement available for ages 2, 3 and 4. Their last Ofsted report in 2013 rated them Outstanding. The report gave high praise in all areas, especially for the fully qualified and experienced staff. The full report can be found online but the following snippets give a good feel for what was written: “Staff have excellent knowledge of how children learn and provide a varied and imaginative education programme.” “Children form secure emotional attachments.” “Children show high levels of confidence and independence.”
Centre Manager Carolynn Fletcher is rightfully proud and shares the secret to their success, “It really is a team effort. The result was achieved through a partnership between staff and parents. By working together we can all reap the benefits.” The Pre School is passionate about offering a wide range of experiences to children and are always looking at ways to improve what they do. They have been a Healthy Child Care Setting since 2008 and are one of the first settings in Lincolnshire to achieve this. They also have the Inclusion Quality Mark and are one of only eight settings in the country to have it which is a fantastic achievement. In 2013 they signed up for the Eat Better, Start Better early years code of practice for food and drink which is run by the Children’s Food Trust. They are also working towards a Food for Life partnership award through participation in a national pilot scheme, becoming the first nursery in England to receive the award for Early Years. This involves growing, cooking and enjoying healthy foods, giving children a firm basis for healthy eating throughout their
01205 820395 lives. Staff recently travelled to Donington Hall to receive their award. Awards and official reports say a lot about a Pre School and give you the confidence that the setting is dedicated to their own development as well as that of your children, however the best way to see if it is right for you is to pay them a visit. They are more than happy to meet new parents and children and take the tour. You can call on 01205 820395 for a chat.

F
rom the satisfying ‘thunk’ the Santa Fe’s doors make when you close them to the muffled diesel rattle on start up, you soon realise the Hyundai is made of stern stuff. For an SUV with 4x4 credentials it’s fairly economical, returning an average 41.5mpg. It’s an especially comfortable and spacious motor too; it’ll seat five adults and there’s room for two extra little people in the third row of fold-away seats. The sizeable boot is square and low, meaning it’s a doddle to load up. In fact, it’s a perfect family-cumbusiness vehicle. For a biggish car the latest Santa Fe is surprisingly easy to weave through city streets and it will happily tour at 70mph on the motorway all day. The steering is direct and well weighted at all speeds - and there’s only the slightest body roll on bends, but that’s acceptable, given its lofty structure. The gutsy 2.2-litre 194bhp turbo diesel engine comes with a smooth-changing six-speed automatic gearbox, which helps make the motor more than capable of punchy overtaking manoeuvres. In truth, you can have fun if you detour from the straights and take on the twisty country lanes. Of course, being able to cope with a bite of bona fide bucolic driving is how
this Hyundai explains its steep price-tag. With its elevated height, four-wheel-drive and robust body, the handsome Santa Fe Premium has much in its favour to handle the road less travelled. It’s no hardcore mud-plugger but it has the toehold of a traditional 4x4 and the manners of a normal car, while a high level of kit adds more than a splash of splendour. Equipment includes leather upholstery; a sound system with 10 speakers; parking sensors; a rear view parking camera; self levelling suspension; touchscreen satellite

navigation, seven airbags; downhill brake control and hill start assist. As well as the occasional dirt track excursion, the Santa Fe will help you out with, say, caravanning adventures for the whole family. It has an impressive towing capacity of 2,600kg (braked) and, to make life easier, trailer stability assist is part of the gadgetry get-up too.
