Peter’s Notes

Page 10

Wow, this is my final welcome as a Miss, after almost 34 years of the same name it is going to be strange to have a new one from this month. September is here and that’s almost summer over, unless we have a final heatwave, how lucky have we been this year for great weather?! It seems unreal to be saying summer is over and the children will be returning to school, I hope whatever you’ve been doing during the holidays you’ve had lots of fun but are feeling ready and refreshed. Until next month

Hello!

Page 36

There are a lot of articles discussing all things “new” this issue. There are features about Christenings and Naming Ceremonies, new car registrations and the new season, (dare I say it) Autumn, and the variety of food it brings. Away from the pages we are also about to wish Hayley well as she enters a new phase of her life by becoming a married woman! As this issue is being delivered the summer holidays are coming to an end and for those with children things are about to return to some sort of normality! If you are starting school for the first time or moving to secondary or college then good luck, you have exciting times ahead of you. Enjoy the issue.

Boston College Rated Ofsted ‘Good’ The latest Ofsted report for Boston College has just been released and they are pleased to have been graded ‘Good’ all round. Boston College Principal, Amanda Mosek says: “I am absolutely delighted to have received such a fantastic Ofsted report and very proud of all the staff at Boston College. The reports highlights our students’ good achievements and confirms that we are very effective at preparing young people for the world of work or university. I am also extremely pleased to see that the Ofsted inspectors recognised the important role that the College plays in

the local community and the strong culture of respect that exists at the College. This report will give parents and young people confidence that Boston College is the right choice for post-16 education. “Receiving this positive verdict from Ofsted means that Boston College will now be able to take young people from the age of 14 and this is something that we will be looking to do from September 2015. We will be offering a curriculum that combines academic and vocational options. Ambitious young people will be able to embark on their career pathway early,

giving them a head start against others and improving their chances of securing high quality employment.” The full report can be viewed at www.ofsted.gov.uk

Depot opening A ceremonial opening with a difference saw Boston Borough Council’s new environmental services depot declared officially operational. The new depot, in St John’s Road, near the Port of Boston entrance, was opened, not with the traditional cutting of a ribbon, but the cutting of a steel chain with bolt croppers. Council leader Peter Bedford, and Chief Executive Richard Harbord shared the honours as councillors and guests looked on. The council shares a money-saving refuse and recycling collection service in some areas with East Lindsey District Council. The move from the council’s rented depot at Fen Road to the new purpose-build depot on land the council owns will save taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds. All services connected with waste disposal, recycling, garden waste and grounds management are now centralised closer to the town centre, reducing the carbon footprint, and in a better position to serve the villages. The move to the new depot has also led to development of

It’s a win-win situation – we are saving money for council taxpayers and are more centrally situated. It’s even better for staff who now have less distance to travel to get to work. Some now arrive by bicycle, which is good for the environment, good for their health and good for their pocket.”

Last year the partnership listened to your views and produced a three year strategy for tackling crime (available at www.boston.gov.uk/ELCSP). The current priorities are anti-social behaviour, violent crime (including domestic abuse) community cohesion, alcohol misuse and theft from shops and cycle thefts (in Boston). Your views this year will fine tune the crime-fighting priorities for 2015. In Boston the partnership is delivering the following projects to address your concerns: • Working with alcohol concern to increase the number of people drinking at harmful levels accessing treatment • Exploring the introduction of a controlled drinking zone in the town centre to reduce street drinking and associated anti-social behaviour • A multi-agency ‘safe zone’ to promote safety on nights out • Supporting a pilot project to promote alcohol treatment services through local pharmacies • High visibility patrols in key stores in the town to reduce shoplifting • Cycle marking events to ensure people’s bikes are less of a target to thieves • Fitting security equipment into homes to ensure the safety of domestic abuse victims. Cllr Stephen Woodliffe, portfolio holder of regulatory services said

“This is an opportunity for the public to tell the partnership what issues concern them. Your input is vital to help the partnership tackle key problems in local areas”. The survey is available to complete online from Monday, August 18 at www. boston.gov.uk. Hard copies are also available at the council offices. The closing date for responses is Friday, October 10, 2014. 6 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Spitting campaign Spitting in the street in Boston will soon be an offence punishable with a £75 fine, the borough council has warned. But there will be a period of change and education before fines are imposed. A legal precedent has been set in other parts of the country, backed by local government and communities minister Eric Pickles, making spitting illegal. Consultation carried out with the public by the borough council has found overwhelming support for spitting in the street to be outlawed. The council is to make it an offence to spit under the same legislation which makes it unlawful to throw litter down in the street. Anything thrown down in the street which is not picked up can be classed as litter – from a fish and chip wrapper to a can of drink, to spit. Two men who refused to pay a fixed penalty fine issued by Waltham Forest Council in north-east London for spitting in the street have been fined £160 each. It was the first to prosecute successfully for spitting. Mr Pickles has backed moves by councils to ban the habit. He called spitting “deeply unpleasant”, adding: “Spitting on Britain’s streets is not socially acceptable.” . Councillor Michael Brookes, the council’s portfolio holder for street cleansing, said: “We have had an increasing number of complaints from the public about spitting in the street. We have included this in our new environmental crime strategy.

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston Boston Borough Council’s planning committee has made a brave but correct decision to indicate its approval of one of the biggest developments ever to be put before them. Support for the scheme has already been indicated with granting of £4.75 million secured by Greater Lincolnshire LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) from the Government’s Growth Deal. The successful bid is a major indication of support for the project from Government, reinforcing the planning committee’s decision. There has been a vociferous campaign against this development on land at Wyberton, but I make no apologies for my support for the project. I know the decision of the planning committee will not please everyone but I firmly believe it is a right decision for the greater good of Boston and the borough. It brings in much-needed new housing – 500 homes including a substantial number of affordable properties - and leisure and commercial opportunities - lays an important foundation for a traffic relief road for Boston and secures the future of Boston Utd with the building of a new community stadium. We cannot afford to stand still and risk stagnation. Boston is moving forwards and I applaud this bold decision. The development marks the start of a regeneration project for Boston and includes the first section of a distributor road, some of it dualled – a realistic ultimate answer to town centre traffic congestion. As the next phase – Quadrant 2 – moves forward, the distributor road will be built round to Tesco and put pressure

on Lincolnshire County Council and the Government to put funding in place for the links through to the A52 and the A1121 Boardsides and then over the Witham to Tattershall Road and the Pilgrim Hospital. There is a need for the new homes, especially the affordable element, and the leisure and commercial aspects and there will be financial benefits for Wyberton, the wider area and Wyberton Parish Council, which will be able to precept more. It also offers drainage improvements and extra ground for Wyberton Sports and Social Club. It also secures the future for Boston Utd, with extra benefits for the community through provision of a new community stadium and modern facilities such as an allweather pitch. The only losers will be those who have complained that they will lose a view – but the right to a view is not a material planning consideration. This is not something the planning committee would have been allowed to consider. Local people will benefit from Tytton Lane no longer being used as a rat run. The planning committee, quite rightly, has put in place a number of conditions to safeguard the amenities of residents. A condition of the award of Government cash for this project is that it has to be started by Spring, 2015, so we expect to see rapid progress now. On a separate matter, some of the council’s constant critics have highlighted what they clearly believe to be excessive reserves being held by the council. What they have not taken into account is that this currently includes Government cash made available for grants in connection with the December flood. We do not want to have to return any of this money to Government so I would again appeal to all who are eligible to make a claim now. Go to the council’s website – www. boston.gov/flood - for all the details. Cllr Peter Bedford, Leader, Boston Borough Council

Advice

Going to university? Housing tips for students ❱ BY STUART HELLON Have you just received your A-level results and are planning to start university this autumn? If so, you’re likely to be one of the many students who will soon be moving into private rented accommodation for the first time. Moving away from home can be quite daunting, so it’s useful to know what to expect before you move. Our student housing information can help you along the way.

Here are a few top tips for private renters: • Ask about letting agent’s fees - letting agents often charge for things like credit checks and checking references. Always ask an agent to give you information on what it charges for. Not all agents make additional charges, and the amounts they do charge can vary. • Read your tenancy agreement carefully - make sure you read and understand the tenancy agreement before you sign it. If there’s something that you’re not clear on, ask about it. • Know about tenancy deposit protection - if you’re starting an assured shorthold tenancy, your landlord or the letting agent must use a tenancy deposit protection scheme to safeguard your deposit. They have to do this within 30 days of receiving the deposit and give you certain information about the deposit and the scheme they’ve used. • Do you have a guarantor? - landlords often ask students for a guarantor, which is a third party, such as a parent, who agrees to pay your rent if you don’t pay it. If you share accommodation under a joint tenancy agreement, it’s common for the guarantee to apply to all of the rent, and not just your share. It’s best to check the guarantee agreement

carefully. You may be able to negotiate a change so that your guarantor is only liable for your rent payments. • Make sure you have an inventory - an inventory is a list of everything that’s provided in your home. Having one can help prevent disputes about the deposit at the end of the tenancy. If your landlord provides an inventory, check it carefully before signing it. If your landlord doesn’t provide one, draw one up yourself and ask the landlord or an independent witness to sign it. • Sharing with others - if you’re sharing accommodation with other students, make

sure you know how the tenancy is arranged. If you have a joint tenancy, all of you will be jointly and individually responsible for the terms and conditions of the tenancy agreement. This means if one of the sharers doesn’t pay their share of the rent, the rest of you could be responsible for making up the shortfall. So it’s a good idea to share with people you can trust and to make sure rent is paid on time. • Keep good records - always make a note of any repairs that you have to report and what your landlord did in response. Keep proof of your rent payments and proof that other household bills have been paid.

Belle: The True Story of Dido Belle Paula Byrne

Mr Gum and the Goblins Andy Stanton

Library News

Recently adapted for the big screen, this book was inspired by a famous eighteenth century portrait of two beautiful young women. One of the young women in the portrait is Dido Belle, the illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy captain and a slave woman from the Caribbean. The book outlines the world into which Belle was born – Britain in the grip of an obsession with a new commodity, sugar – and her remarkable life as a mixed-race woman raised by an aristocratic family in England. While the book contains a lot of information about the slave trade and Belle’s upbringing, it isn’t overwhelming. The book is divided into manageable chapters, each with its own focus. This is good book and recommended for history lovers or fans of the film who want to learn more.

All is not quiet in the town of Lamonic Bibber. Mrs Lovely Weekly, who runs the local sweet shop, has been ‘duffed up by creatures unknown’. The 3 heroes; Alan Taylor, a gingerbread man who runs Saint Pterodactyl’s School for the Poor, Friday O’Leary (Mrs. Lovely’s Husband) and a nine year old girl named Polly must go on a quest up Goblin Mountain across Goblin river towards Goblin Cave to find out what’s going on. Will the heroes succeed in their quest? Is Mrs Lovely Weekly alright? And where is that bad man Mr Gum? Listen to this audio book to find out the answers! One of the library staff listened to the audio book in the car; her eight year old son loved the Goblin song, especially the burping solo which certainly made for a less boring journey!

Up for a challenge this summer? The Summer Reading Challenge is in full swing already but it’s not too late to join in the fun. Children aged four to eleven can take part; just read six books to win stickers and prizes! Adults don’t need to miss out, either. Step across our fictional crime scene to take up the Queens of Crime Reading Challenge to win £100 worth of books and more!

Eat Local

Game On! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

We are always hearing about the importance of eating food that is in season and it has to be said that most of us are aware of when the best time to eat various fruit and vegetables are but what about meat?

M

eat such as chicken and beef are yearround staples but we live in an area rich with Game which is about to come into season in a big way so if you haven’t before, consider letting this wonderful meat onto your plate. Eating meat seasonally has many benefits. As well as reducing CO2 emissions it really does support the local economy. Plus if you haven’t ever eaten game it’s a good opportunity to try something new. If you have children then you can take the opportunity to talk to them about the origins of what is on their plate. You don’t have to go too far before you find an article discussing the fact that children are becoming less aware of where their food actually comes from – a recent poll for the British Nutrition Foundation highlighted this beautifully with children thinking that cheese comes from plants and fish fingers come from chicken or pigs. Scary data to say the least! Back to the delights of eating game! August sees the opening of Deer and Grouse season and September sees Duck, Goose, Partridge and Wood Pigeon with Pheasant following in October. Whilst you won’t find Grouse running around in Lincolnshire without being bred for the purpose you will everything else listed above. Duck and Goose are birds closely associated with Christmas (after the mighty Turkey, of course) and can be cooked similarly to Chicken. Goose is a much fattier meat though allowing you a wider variety of recipes. The best place to buy this meat is at your local butcher or farm shop as you won’t find too much game on offer in the supermarket and

that which they do have may come from out of the area. Spalding Farm Shop, for example, stocks Wild Rabbit, Partridge, Lincolnshire Wild Venison and Gresingham Duck Breast. Venison is a full flavoured meat which is low in fat and can be used in many dishes. Traditionally you will find venison in a pie, but you could make burgers or meatballs with it or keep it simple and use it for your Sunday roast. Loin is the most popular cut but the butcher will be happy to advise you which cut you will need depending on what you are making. Pheasant is a very versatile meat and, handily, it goes particularly well with vegetables which are in season in autumn. It also goes well with fruit such as apples, pomegranates, figs and berries. Partridge has a different taste but can be treated similarly when cooking. Wood Pigeon is a bit different in that it is a very sweet meat and therefore it lends itself to being pan fried. Wood Pigeon salad is a delicious meal but make sure you have it before it gets too cold – firstly nobody fancies a salad in the winter and secondly the older the pigeon gets the tougher its meat. Eating Wood Pigeon soon after their hunting season starts will assure you of a dish that is particularly tasty. Wild Rabbit is year-round game and great in many dishes. Rabbit is a mild flavour so be careful what you pair it with. Saying that, it will flavour a casserole beautifully. You can also roast rabbit. As with all meat that is not intensively reared, be aware that there may be shot in the meat – as a rule, if there is a tunnel shape running through the meat there is a good chance that you will find shot at the end of it! But this is the only thing you really need to look out for and the end product will far outweigh this minor inconvenience.

“Wild Rabbit is year-round game and great in many dishes. Rabbit is a mild flavour so be careful what you pair it with.”

e are finding that we are being recommended by local healthcare professionals as well as clients returning for treatments.”

Under the ownership of Sally Cadle who qualified from the Wessex School of Chiropody in 1991, Pen Street Foot Clinic not only offers routine Chiropody/Podiatry treatments, but also Nail Surgery, Diabetic Assessments, insoles, verruca treatments and can provide advice on general foot health as well as investigating common foot ailments and disorders. Sally says “we are really pleased with how the clinic is going and are finding that we are being recommended by local healthcare professionals as well as clients returning for treatments”. Sally is a member of The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists, (there is no difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist, Podiatry being the term used for Chiropodists in other English speaking countries). Sally is also regulated by the HCPC (Health and Care Professions Council) which is the regulatory body in the UK which only registers professionals who meet their standards in training, professional skills and behaviour. “This means I have to complete continual professional development to keep up to date with the ever changing regulations, standards and new treatments and ideas”. Whilst Podiatrists treat people of all ages, they play a particularly important role in helping older people to stay mobile and independent. Treatments can be ongoing or simply a one off treatment which can solve a problem. Diabetes affects in 1 in 16 adults across the world and can result in the person

being at a higher risk of foot problems due to the effects on the circulation, which can in turn result in infection and poor healing, and nerves leading to neuropathy (nerve damage). This is why a preventative foot care regime is important as well as yearly Diabetic foot assessments with a healthcare

Batemans Brewery

Craft Brewers A brewery run by brewers, not accountants!

B

atemans has been a craft brewer since 1874, based in Wainfleet Lincolnshire, just a few miles from Skegness. Batemans is extremely proud of its heritage and the part which the Brewery windmill has played in the history and success of the family company. In these days of multinational breweries mass producing their beers for an uneducated market, it’s nice to see Batemans is not only producing a wide range of enjoyable and quality beers, but is continuing to thrive and grow and reach new palettes. When it started in business 140 years ago, there was only one beer produced in the Wainfleet brewery, but by 1960 this had grown to eight different brews. These included three draught beers – a light mild, a dark mild and XB bitter supported by five bottled beers: IPA, Double Brown, Nut Brown, Dinner Ale and BBB. Up until the mid-70s naturally conditioned Guinness, Bass and Worthington was also bottled at Batemans. Up to 1995 Batemans bottled its own beers; the original range of IPA, Nut Brown, Double Brown and Dinner Ale was joined by Victory Ale, a beer brewed in conjunction with CAMRA to celebrate the end for the ‘Battle for Independence’ and subsequently Triple XB and Valiant. The latter three were not only sold in Supermarkets throughout the UK but also in North America, Japan and Europe. As volumes grew a decision had to be made about whether to invest in new

bottling equipment or have the bottling contracted out. It was decided to develop a partnership with Marstons which now bottles an extensive range which includes XXXB, Combined Harvest, Dark Lord and Victory Ale and a number of seasonal favourites. On the cask beer side, Batemans Brewery now brews five permanent brands. Dark Mild, voted Mild of the Year by CAMRA three times, XB, XXXB (voted ‘Beer of the Year’ at the Great British Beer Festival by CAMRA in 1986 and Premium Beer of the Year five times), Salem Porter (voted ‘Winter Beer of the Year’ in 1997 and 2005 by CAMRA), then in 2009 GHA Pale (Good Honest Ales) was added to the portfolio of permanent cask beers. GHA is a delicious pale beer, clean, crisp and zesty. ABV 4.2%. Batemans has also become known for

specialist beers and beer concepts. The first of these unique propositions was ‘Mr George’s Unique Flavours’. These were beers brewed slightly differently from the norm using various fruits of the season and other interesting flavours, e.g. strawberries, vanilla and liquorice to name but a few. The strawberry beer went down very well - the only problem was that it was difficult to get the flavour of strawberries out of the pipes! Since then the company has gone on to produce a wide range of commemorative and special beers for all manner of occasions such as the Skegness iconic Jolly Fisherman’s 90th birthday. As the perception of real ale moves away from fuddy duddy old men with big beards into a more widely appreciated art form, Batemans has moved with the times and its beers are widely regarded as some of the best in the real ale world. If you would like to see the process for yourself and fancy a taste then the visitor centre offer brewery tours daily at 12:30pm and 2:30pm (2:30pm only from October 1). Celebrations

Christenings & Naming Ceremonies ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

People choose lots of ways to celebrate the safe arrival of their children, ranging from a party to a traditional Christening to a naming ceremony. It’s nice to have a variety of options but what is involved in the planning of each and which suits you best?

M

any people opt for a traditional Christening. If you would like your child baptized then your first port of call is to talk to your local vicar. They will tell you what you need to know and do as well as advising whether you need to have a special service or if it will be after the weekly Sunday service, which is often the case. Your biggest decision will come when you choose Godparents. In terms of choice, the Church would prefer that you choose Godparents based on their strong Christian beliefs as their role is to assist in the child’s moral and spiritual upbringing. And whilst it is not always the case, the Church of England prefers two Godparents of the same sex and one of the opposite. However you choose and for whatever reason it is a good idea to make sure it is someone you will stay in touch with. It sounds obvious but it is surprising how people consider only the present and not the future. If you don’t have one already you will need to choose a Christening gown. Traditionally these are long and cream for both boys and girls however the rules have relaxed greatly and today in most Churches children can wear any outfit. If you have a christening gown which is a family heirloom then it is a beautiful way of continuing a tradition or you could buy new or even make one yourself if you feel so inclined. When considering who you are going to invite, decide where you are going and what you are doing afterwards to make sure you are able to accommodate the amount of people you are hoping to invite. If you are planning tea and cake back at your home after the Christening then it might not be a good idea to invite 150 people! If, on the other hand, you are hiring a venue and using outside caterers then those numbers are feasible provided it fits your budget. If you are not religious but still would like a way to mark the arrival of your child then you might like to hold a Naming Ceremony. The British Humanist Association can help by way of a Naming Ceremony. You can perform the ceremony yourself or a qualified celebrant from the British Humanist Society or the UK Society of Celebrants can perform it for you. The ceremony can either follow the Celebrant’s format or you can work with them to create your own ceremony. These usually include readings in the form of poetry or prose and music. The only stipulation is that it is nonreligious. You can still choose people to look after your

child’s moral upbringing but rather than being called Godparents they are referred to as Guideparents or Supporting Adults. Unlike a Christening you don’t have to move on once the ceremony is complete, you can spend the whole day at the one venue which can be a great benefit when it comes to organsing the day. However you choose to celebrate the birth of your child, in Church, at home or at a venue of your choosing, making sure you are surrounded by the right people – friends and family who will offer your child love and security will ensure that you have a day to remember.

“If you are not religious but still would like a way to mark the arrival of your child then you might like to hold a Naming Ceremony.”

H

aving identified a need in the area for high quality kitchens at realistic prices he moved his business to the area. He is rightfully proud of the product he offers, German manufactured Ballerina kitchens which are an up to date, modern product with contemporary and traditional finishes. For James, quality is at the top of his list: “Ballerina kitchens come fully built, they are delivered as a rigid carcass straight from the factory no there is no assembly needed. It means it is very sturdy and durable.” He is also keen to point out that, with something as important as a kitchen which can often be the focal point of a home, you need to use a professional kitchen designer to get the most out of your space: “Each project requires a specialist touch so don’t leave it to a big superstore where they may have had the basic training but it’s not what they do for a living so how can they give you the perfect kitchen? Quite simply, they can’t. We offer a free professional design and quotation service, so you can see the quality for yourself as well as the sheer range we have on offer.” There are other benefits to using an industry expert, Spalding Luxury Kitchens are able to help with all enquiries, from the smallest alteration to a complete renovation. They have been involved with projects that needed a simple change of one appliance right through to jobs which required full planning permission and building regulation approval. James only uses local

specialist craftsmen so you are assured the job will be done to the highest specification. Once you have chosen your carcass the fun really begins as Spalding Luxury Kitchens offer you a huge choice of worktops, tiles, doors and handles. They are especially proud of their worktop range offering the best quality laminates, acrylic, glass, solid stone and precast concrete. They even have new lines of eco-friendly worktops and doors which are as durable and attractive as their traditional counterparts. They are a CDA appliance master partner, offering a wide range of appliances however they are happy to work to your specification and can source any appliance brand on the market. Once you’ve agreed on your appliances you will find a choice of iglass splash backs to choose from to complete the look. New Car Registration

Will you still love me when I’m 64? ❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

The first day of September will see status-conscious motorists across the United Kingdom making a beeline for cars with shiny new 64 plates

B

“My advice is to stroll into a car dealership on the last weekend, or even better, the final day of the month, and sales staff will bend over backwards to do business in your favour.”

ut if you’re thinking of getting in on the latest registration game, think again. You may be able to get your hands on a new, or nearly new, car for much less cash. You see, September is big-game season for motor dealers. The forecourts will be swarming with excitable punters eager to get one over on their neighbours or colleagues by collecting a vehicle sporting a fresher than fresh registration plate. And the salesmen will be licking their lips at the prospect. But by waiting until the traders are nervously looking at their targets and speculating when their next bonus is going to fall into their laps, you could stand to save a considerable amount of wonga. My advice is to stroll into a car dealership on the last weekend, or even better, the final day of the month, and sales staff will bend over backwards to do business in your favour. Walk in at the end of a quarter, though, and you’ll be treated like a dignitary. You’re virtually guaranteed to be offered bargains galore, but try not to think he or she is pulling a fast one when you’re told a discount is only valid if the car is registered that month. You’re not being told porky pies. If you’ve got a new motor in mind, but you’re not fussed about the specification or colour, then a pre-reg snip might just be your thing. A pre-registered car is quintessentially a brand new vehicle. Most of the time, the paperwork has filed by the dealer to make their numbers look healthier and to keep the orders rolling in from the automakers. The cars will have been parked safe and sound on the forecourt with just the delivery mileage on the dial. The only real negative aspect is that the motor’s warranty will already have started counting down - and it won’t have a gleaming 64 plate. But with whopping savings to be made, does that really bother you?

28 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Of course, vehicle brokers have connections with auto dealer networks and behave a bit like fixers. They assist customers find cut price cars and lend a hand to dealers who are trying to shift stock. They can usually hunt down the ride you’re after, even if it might not be to the exact spec. The largest cash savings are usually for customers shopping at the higher end of the motor market though. Take into consideration that a car identified for you by a broker might not have full warranty if it has been pre-registered. In all probability you won’t be able to part-exchange your current vehicle either. Also, a comprehensive investigation of a broker’s integrity won’t go amiss - it’s not too difficult to dig up nasty tales, so make thorough enquiries before consenting to a sale. Another plan at this time of the year is to let someone else take the hit on your behalf. There will be no scarcity of year-old give-aways on the forecourts as class -conscious drivers trade in their totally decent cars for something with an unsullied 64 plate. However, take into consideration that you may not be able to make back quite so much when you come to sell the motor on. So, whether you choose to purchase nearly new or you go for an up-to-the-minute 64 plate, make sure you’ve shopped around to get the best possible bargain.

Mercedes-Benz GLA This Mercedes-Benz is zippy on country roads and dynamic and frugal around town or on the motorway

B

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

ut this isn’t just your standard high-quality Merc. The GLA is the first Mercedes-Benz compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) to be available with the company’s newgeneration permanent all-wheel drive system, 4MATIC. The GLA is less imposing than many SUVs, and therefore it fits perfectly into the day-to-day urban lifestyle. At the same time the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, fitted to my GLA 220 CDI model, guarantees plenty of recreational enjoyment. So, once you’re away from the daily routine, the car could tackle, say, rough terrain, the beach, and loose ground without a problem. As a composed everyday companion the GLA has a flexible interior. The rear seat backrests can not only be folded down completely, but are also adjustable for angle if required. In addition, the liberal luggage compartment can be loaded without difficulty thanks to a low sill and wide hatchback. The dashboard consists of an upper and lower section, allowing surface structures that are different in look and feel. Matt and glossy graining creates an attractive light effect and five round air vents are integrated into the dashboard. The Mercedes’ seats are sporty and supportive and controls for the electric seat adjustment are arranged on the interior

door panels. These panels are of extremely high quality, having a soft, plush feel about them. The GLA has a large, free-standing display set in the middle of the dash. It serves as a sat-nav and as an information source. But it has the unfortunate appearance of being stuck on at the last minute. A more integrated system would complete an otherwise perfect cabin. This SUV features a fuel-saving ECO start/ stop function; and the engine on the 220 CDI GLA is combined with a dual clutch automatic transmission, which marries efficiency and sportiness to an outstanding level. The set-up of the car’s chassis means you’re guaranteed a comfortable commute. And, compared with conventional systems, the GLA’s power steering provides brilliant feedback. The power steering also allows various assistance functions. These include countersteering if the vehicle oversteers; steering corrections when braking on surfaces with different levels of grip; reducing the effects of front-wheel drive on the steering and compensation of cross-winds and road camber. This technology gives you the confidence to turn hard into bends because you can sense exactly what’s happening beneath the tyres. The four wheel drive obviously adds to this assurance and fuels a belief that the

Features include Attention Assist drowsiness detection and radar-based Collision Prevention Assist with adaptive Brake Assist, which helps to protect against collisions from a speed of only 4 mph. So, if you’re a bit of car badge snob and you fancy yourself as fair-weather off-roader, then this could well be the motor you’ve been looking for. At over £31,000 the GLA 220 CDI 4MATIC AMG Line, reviewed here, is not cheap, but it’s one that you’ll be proud to own – and able to play with safely on days away from the office.
