Home Project: Extending

I have had the startling realisation this month that the countdown to my wedding can be measured in weeks rather than months… so please, if you spot me out shopping with anything but fruit or veg in my trolley you have my full permission to snatch all the naughty stuff straight back out! In all seriousness this year is flying by and I cannot believe it is almost June. It has been a very exciting month in the office as we are pleased to announce that one of our team members Teresa has had her little boy, Josh, and what a cutie he is! Congratulations to Teresa and the rest of her family. We have also had two new staff members join us – Claire Abbot who is working on the sales team and Vicky Senkey-Dunn who is responsible for all the editorial in the magazine. So, with this in mind you will be getting double value and each month Vicky will be guiding you through what is in the issue.

soundLINCS’ birthday celebrations close with unique music event As part of their 15th birthday celebration, B15, soundLINCS, a major East Midlands music development charity, staged a spectacular music event on Saturday 3rd May at the Epic Centre, Lincolnshire Showground which saw over 300 musicians and singers perform to a worldwide audience. Following a day of rehearsals, the players aged between 7 and 85 performed a new composition based on the traditional Lincolnshire Folk tune ‘Lost Lady Found’. The performance featured 15 different musical genres, including Orchestra, Folk, Rock, Jazz, Choral, Music Technology, and Brass Band and saw a huge variety of instruments including guitars, clarinets, accordians, a gamelan, a harp, voices, iPads and unique, hand-made instruments. Recordings and photos of the event are available on soundLINCS website, www.soundlincs.org

Recycling Rewards South Holland District Council has awarded another £900 to great recyclers. The council’s Green Bag Lottery scheme has just completed its second round – and there were nine £100 winners out of a possible ten. The cash has come at just the right time for Holbeach St Marks couple John and Mary Newell. They are celebrating their diamond wedding next month and are putting the money towards a celebration party for family and friends. Mr Newell (82) said: “The win was a lovely surprise and we’re grateful to the district council for this £100. We’ve been recycling for a few years now and always have plenty to put out each week.” It could get even better for the Newells because all winners’ names go forward to a quarterly draw to win a further £1,000. Other £100 recipients in the latest round included: • Agnieszka Nijak, of Knipe Avenue, Spalding • Roy Shortland, of Hawthorn Bank, Spalding • Craig Hodgins, of Gleed Avenue, Donington • Jason Carswell, of West Street, Crowland • Allen Hook, of Allenby’s Chase in Sutton Bridge. District Council waste and recycling officer Samantha Gibbons said: “We’re delighted that we’re able to award this money because

it means that these winners are recycling correctly and regularly. However, we know that there is plenty more that can be recycled in our district and we hope that the Green Bag Lottery will encourage more residents to do their bit and recycle more.” Households in South Holland are automatically entered into the scheme but can elect to opt out. Ten households are randomly and secretly selected every four weeks. Every one which presents recycling correctly for at least three of the four weeks wins £100. The scheme, which will run for at least a year is funded by a grant from the Government’s Department of Communities and Local Government’s Weekly Collections Support Scheme.

Lincolnshire Show Donates 100 Tickets to Support Troops To mark the 100 year anniversary of the start of the First World War, the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society has donated 100 Lincolnshire Show tickets to a national charity supporting brave servicemen and women in the HM Armed Forces. The charity, Tickets for Troops, was set up in 2009 and offers servicemen and women free tickets to a variety of sporting, musical and cultural events. Veronica Bamford, Director of Operations at Tickets for Troops said: “The generous donation of 100 tickets to this year’s Lincolnshire Show is very well received as it’s a fantastic day out for the whole family and I know troops that attend will have a very enjoyable time. “Tickets for Troops has allocated over 475,000 tickets to troops across the UK and has over 135,000 members registered. We

recognise that brave servicemen and women who spend months away from their families need to be available to serve at short notice and put their lives on the line for our country.” Jayne Southall, CEO of the Lincolnshire Showground and Lincolnshire Agricultural Society said: “It’s a privilege to receive tickets from such a worthy charity. The Lincolnshire Show offers a wide range of entertainment and attractions and welcomes crowds from the Midlands and the rest of the country. We’re delighted to offer the troops the chance to enjoy it with their loved ones.” The headline attraction of this year’s show will be the RAF Falcons parachute display team, who will perform an aweinspiring military parachute freefall display - including advanced manoeuvres and falling speeds of up to 120mph.

Lincolnshire Show Competition Winner Announced The people of Lincolnshire have been given the chance to grow their business with the help of The Lincolnshire Showground and NatWest in a competition called Grow with the Show. Grow with the Show is a new competition that gives a business owner, aged between 18 and 30, who has set up their business in the last 18 months, the chance to use this year’s Lincolnshire Show as a platform to showcase their business. The winner of the competition is Rebekah Lockley, of RubyRebekah Ceramics who creates beautiful handmade ceramics illustrated with traditional techniques. Rebekah’s prize is a trade stand at the Lincolnshire Show on 18th and 19th June. Rebekah said: ““The challenge of setting up a business on your own is tough, so I am elated to be selected for this unique opportunity with the Lincolnshire Show, and grateful for the encouragement it has given to me and my ceramics. It is an unbelievable chance to present my ceramics into the public, and I am so excited!” Jayne Southall, CEO of the Lincolnshire Showground and Lincolnshire Agricultural Society said: “We are delighted to

announce that Rebekah is our winner of this new competition. We attract approximately 60,000 people over the two days so it’s the perfect opportunity to showcase a new business and meet potential customers. With the Show as a spring board and the support of NatWest I’m looking forward to watching Rebekah’s progress over the next 12 months.” Two lucky runners up have also been selected – Faye Isaac with her innovative online children’s design store www.abacuskids.co.uk and Sophie Watkinson and her do-dance company bringing dance to all ages across Lincolnshire. They have both been invited to the Show to enjoy the day and to see what the Show can offer businesses. The Showground are planning to work with all of the entrants at other events held there throughout the year.

Sporting clubs urged to apply for slice of £32million

A Mile of Pennies Overall, the mile of pennies raised £890.82 for MND and the family would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who took part, donated and supported them both on the day and in the months leading up to the event.

Have you ever wondered what a mile of pennies would look like? Well, all those who visited Ayscoughfee Hall and Gardens in Spalding on Saturday 19th April saw just that! 89,082 pennies, approximately 1.06 miles, laid out in the shape of a giant fisherman in the afternoon sun! Inspired by Andrew Grantham, a dedicated fisherman for many years, and

now an MND sufferer. This great illustration, drawn by Joanne Grantham, is the culmination of a determined fundraising effort for the MND Association. Rewinding to November 2013, pots and posters surrounded the local area and beyond explaining the grand plan ‘to collect a mile of pennies’ in aid of the MND Association. Friends, family and

Spalding’s local residents rallied around collecting pennies in many local institutions, from businesses to schools - all contributing to this spectacular fundraiser. The MND Association is a cause very close to these organiser’ hearts as Julie’s husband, Andrew, has been disagnosed with this terrible disease. The support that the association have been providing the family at such a difficult time inspired Julie Grantham to begin organising a range of events to raise money. Her wish is that the money would help towards the hope that future sufferers would have a chance of prolonging their lives and reducing their suffering.

Sporting clubs across South Holland are being urged to apply for a slice of £32million of funding. Sportivate is a nationwide campaign that gives people aged between 11 and 25 the chance to receive six weeks’ sport coaching or led sessions for little or no cost. This includes disability sport. One local recipient of funding is Volleyball Spalding, which was granted £730 to target 29 new participants. The next deadline to apply for funding is Friday, May 30, 2014. This deadline date is for projects which are looking to target women and girls’ sport between July this year and March 2015. The final deadline for the current year of funding is August 1, 2014. This is open to all clubs and organisations looking to run a project between October this year and March 2015. To find out more about Sportivate and download an application form visit http://lincolnshiresport.com/ sportivate/ or contact Lucy Blakey by email at lucy.blakey@ lincolnshiresport.com or call 01522 585 580.

Lincolnshire artists at Sam Scorer Lincolnshire Artists’ Society is delighted to once again be having their Summer Exhibition at the prestigious Sam Scorer Gallery in Lincoln. The Exhibition, which runs from 8th – 20th July 2014 will be open 10-4pm Tuesday - Sunday (closed Mondays) and admission is free. Les Dabrowski, Chairman of the Society, commented: “We hope that people will find the time to come along and support local artists. We are delighted to be back at Sam Scorer, which provides such a good space to show off the talents of the many artists and crafts people who are our members. The area has a number of galleries and this is an opportunity for both locals and tourists to enjoy a wide range of art work.” The Lincolnshire Artists’ Society, founded as the Lincolnshire Drawing Club, celebrated its Centenary in 2006. Inspired by the Cambridge Drawing Society founded in 1882, it was followed by the St Ives Society in 1927. Primarily an exhibiting society welcoming artists from all over the county, the L.A.S. started out with an Annual Exhibition in the loose boxes of the stables at Monks Manor, Lincoln, the home of its founder, Miss Elsie Ruston, and her art collecting industrialist father, Joseph. It moved to the city’s Exchange Arcade in 1910 following interest from the press and public, then to a room in the new Central library eventually finding a home in the Usher Gallery from 1927. A great survivor,

it emerged from an enforced period of inactivity in the First World War and has had an unbroken run of exhibitions in Lincoln and around the county ever since. The Gallery was originally set up by Sam Scorer, the celebrated architect, and is now run by the Gallery Arts Trust.

Community Safety in the South Holland District is the responsibility of the East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership (ELCSP), which is an informal partnership between Boston Borough, East Lindsey and South Holland District Councils. The partnership has a statutory duty to work together under the Crime and Disorder Act (1998) to implement a plan to reduce crime and disorder. The other partners include Lincolnshire Police, Lincolnshire County Council, Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue, Lincolnshire Probation Trust and Clinical Commissioning Groups. The East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership is in turn represented on the County-wide Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership. In 2013-14 the ELCSP had three priorities of Anti-social Behaviour (ASB), Violent Crime and Community Cohesion with additional themes around Alcohol mis-use and Fear of Crime. In South Holland, to help prevent Anti-social Behaviour we involved young people in the ‘Activate’ project, aimed at 8 – 19 year olds in a variety of activities including wall climbing, mobile skatepark, sports, dance and games. Sessions were delivered in Spalding, Gedney Hill and Holbeach and were attended by 894 young people. Operation Trunk was introduced in Spalding

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

Town Centre to tackle ASB in relation to street drinking. During the first year of delivery there were 337 occasions when people were dealt with for breaches of the Designated Public Places Order. This has made a big difference during the day and a highly visible police presence continues in the evening to deter drinkers. Firefighter experience days were delivered in Spalding, Crowland, Holbeach, Donington and Long Sutton with 64 young people attending. Sessions focused on fire safety in the home and in general, as well as fire fighter skills, drills, use of hydrants and hose running. A Street Pastor Scheme was introduced in

Spalding to care, help and support vulnerable people, particularly when exiting late night establishments in the town when they may have been a little worse for wear. It has helped to reduce potentially violent and harmful situations. The Street Pastors pick up and dispose of glass bottles and cans of drink, clear up broken glass, give out bottles of water, administer basic first aid, call for an ambulance, provide support for lone females or for those being sick. Volunteers, who receive training, are welcome to join the scheme. All partners have signed up to the Domestic Abuse Charter and have supported campaigns on domestic abuse and sexual violence, including the ‘No Means No’ and the ‘Teenage Relationship Abuse’ campaigns. Trading Standards and Lincolnshire Police have worked together to tackle the sale of alcohol to underage drinkers using test purchase operations. Those premises that are found to be selling to underage drinkers are fined and risk losing their licence. In addition all off-licences have been asked to sign up to an agreement not to sell individual cans of alcohol, which were believed to be fuelling street drinking. As the South Holland representative on both the East Lincolnshire and Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnerships, I am pleased to say we have made significant inroads into reducing community safety in South Holland and made it a safer place to live, work and play.

SPALDING TRANSPORT STRATEGY

WE NEED YOUR VIEWS

L

incolnshire County Council and South Holland District Council are working together to develop a transport strategy for Spalding and the surrounding area. Like many communities in Lincolnshire, Spalding has the potential for significant growth over the coming years. Even before this growth, we recognise there are areas of the town which suffer traffic congestion along with poor travel options for non-car based travel.

Visit our exhibitions at the South Holland Centre, Market Place, Spalding, PE11 1SS Thursday 12th June 2014 - 15:00 to 19:30 Friday 13th June 2014 - 12:00 to 16:00 Sat 14th June 2014 - 09:30 to 15:00 Staff will be on-hand to discuss the draft strategy, local transport related issues and answer any questions. Questionnaires will be available to record your views. All consultation material and an on-line questionnaire will also be available at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk (search for Spalding Transport Strategy). You can also contact the team at sts@lincolnshire.gov.uk.

The closing date for responses is 11th July 2014.

The objectives of the transport strategy are to: • Support sustainable economic growth; • Ensure transport infrastructure meets development needs; • Address town centre congestion; • Encourage alternative travel modes; • Improve connectivity and access for all; • Improve air quality and reduce noise levels; • Reduce the number and severity of road accidents; • Improve the attractiveness and liveability of Spalding for residents, workers and visitors.

At the end of 2013 we consulted local organisations, businesses and residents about the current and future travel problems around Spalding. Since then we have assessed the ideas put forward and drawn up a draft transport strategy. WE NOW NEED YOUR VIEWS. A successful transport strategy needs to meet the needs of local residents, businesses and visitors. The draft strategy has been drawn up, based on local views. Now we need to know what you think about the draft, what’s important to you and how we should shape the future of transport in Spalding.

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Monkshouse School Nursery We are all ready to go with our new topic of ‘Out and About’. We have been exploring our garden, getting the soil ready and planting seeds and plants which we hope will grow into tasty fruit and vegetables that we can eat later in the term. We have also been searching for mini beasts and some of us were brave enough to pick them up while others preferred

just to look. Later in the term we will be visiting the park and going out for the day to the farm as well as thinking about other places we could visit. We are also excited because we have just started a new breakfast club at Nursery each morning from 8.00am. So now we can come and have breakfast together along with some of our friends from school

as well and we get to play and try lots of activities before the usual school day. We will also be getting ready to move to our ‘big schools’ in September. The teachers think some of us might be a bit nervous, so we will be visiting our new classes, getting used to being in the hall, playground and other areas of the school.

Wisbech Grammar School A Wisbech Grammar School side has dominated an anniversary test match against a visiting club side from the twin town of Arles. Playing on the school’s newly laid 1st XV pitch, the Wisbech team and Arles-Tarascon Club de Rugby under-17 side locked horns from the first whistle, with hard fought exchanges among the forwards. Early on, the school team edged three scrums and Arles responded in the line-out. In an encounter marked by good tackling and hard fought breakdowns, Freddy Foreman and Charlie Golding led the way up front, making useful runs, which were well supported by the rest of the pack. Scrum half Patrick Webb moved the ball wide to Willis Bennett, who put Ryan Hutler and Samuel Hughes into space. Wisbech then used the passing to good effect, scoring out wide through Hutler and Frederick Bowlby. As Arles was forced to cover the wide passes, Brodie Ellis, James Sapsford and Oliver Short made yards on the inside, where Calum Burrows-McGill and Ben Goose secured the ball on the floor, which was then moved out to the backs again. At half-time Wisbech had taken a 25-point lead, but the Frenchmen came back strongly in the second half, competing well at the breakdown and producing good handling rugby in their back division. However, Wisbech dominated the forward exchanges again, with Webb, James Thompson, Foreman and Hutler all scoring. Arles rallied well in the last five minutes, pressuring the Wisbech defence, but the

16 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

home side held out until the end, with Jacob Chapman, Jack Maile, Charles Pindar, Dominic Young and Callum Ward all defending resolutely to help Wisbech to a winning score of 45-0. On the previous day the visitors, who were hosted by parents, pupils and staff from the school as well as members of the twinning club committee, tasted action against Wisbech Rugby Club. In a keenly fought contest involving the Wisbech under 17 team, the set piece was evenly contested, but, as the game broke up, the French boys’ free-flowing style led them to run in good tries and take the match by 34 points to 12. The Arlesian visit, timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the twinning arrangement, followed the Grammar School’s under 13 tour to Wisbech’s twin town in 2012. The Grammar School’s director of sport, Mr Phil Webb, said: “The tour has been a great success and a memorable one, both on and off the field. The Arles players enjoyed both their matches, winning one and losing one. “They had a tremendous time in Wisbech and a wonderful experience with staff, pupils and parents at the school. The Arles coaches and I extend our gratitude both to them and to the members of the Wisbech-Arles Twinning Club who contributed to the visit.”

Ayscoughfee Hall School The children returning from their Easter break were amazed to see the transformation of one of their playground areas. Gone was the concrete and in its place was a beautiful garden complete with outdoor classroom, activity panels, furniture, wall displays and even the school’s own play fire engine. The school’s very supportive PTFA had worked tirelessly for the previous two years to help raise funds for the project and they were thanked at an official opening ceremony attended by children and parents. The renovated area will be a tremendous resource for the children for many years to come; both in terms of providing additional outdoor learning opportunities and for their rest and play at break and lunch times. All of the children had a fascinating day learning about animals in their rain forest habitats with a visit from Zoolab and their collection of mini beasts. In addition, the Kindergarten children have been enthralled by the birth of five young chicks in their class room and watching tadpoles emerge from frog spawn. The children have started their new after school clubs, with the summer favourites including cricket, rounders and golf being joined by some brand new clubs this term. These include Thinking Fun where the children have been thinking through the design for a new 10 star hotel especially for children and a new Ukelele band club. The main stairway of the school is now covered by a fantastic display covering the life and works of William Shakespeare and featuring all of the topic work the children did during Shakespeare week. Following on from this, the juniors are beginning to prepare for their summer production “Shakespeare Rocks” which will give a distinctly contemporary twist to the work of the great Bard. On the music front, the choir and band are building up to their “Musical Memories” performance to the elderly community and the school is hosting the annual Spalding schools music festival on 9th June.

There have been significant changes to the team Neighbourhood Policing Teams in South Holland over recent months and I feel that it is important to introduce you to the new team as we celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in Spalding Police’s history

I

By Sgt Paul Coleman

nspector Jim Tyner retains overall responsibility for the management of the Neighbourhood Policing Teams in South Holland. He is supported by three Neighbourhood or Community Beat Sergeants, each with their own areas of responsibility. Sharon Hall is responsible for Spalding town and estates; I am responsible for the Spalding rural area, which includes the outlying villages in that area; Gareth Boxall is responsible for Holbeach and the surrounding area and he will introduce his officers in the next issue. Sgt Sharon Hall The Spalding Town and Estates team is led by Sharon Hall. She is a very experienced Sergeant, who has worked in a number of areas within the Police including Custody and Road Policing. Sharon is involved in a number of local projects including working with the Gleed Post 16 project as well as local projects to combat Anti-social behaviour in the town centre. Her team is as follows: PC Craig Lockton Craig transferred to Lincolnshire Police in 2003, having started his policing career with the Metropolitan Police in January 1999. He has tutored three probationer constables and joined the Neighbourhood Policing Team in January 2010. Craig has responsibility, as Community Beat Manager, for the Spalding Estates Neighbourhood Policing Team. PCSO Kim Marlowe Kim has worked for Lincolnshire Police for five years as a Police Community Support Officer. She started at Boston Police Station and moved to Spalding Police Station two and a half years ago. PCSO Paul Coupland Paul joined Lincolnshire Police in September 2003, having previously worked in the Armed Forces and on Oil Rigs. He was one of the first PCSOs employed within South Holland and at that time covered the whole of the sector with very little supervision. In January 2005 Paul left the force and started work as a prison officer at HMP Peterborough. Advice

Holidays and Holiday Pay

W

by Lisa Barwell ho has the right to take paid holidays from work

Most workers have the right to take a minimum amount of paid holiday. This is called statutory holiday. You have the right to take statutory paid holiday from work if you are a worker. This includes people who work full-time, parttime, agency workers and casual workers. The rules about statutory holiday apply regardless of how long you have worked for your employer and regardless of how old you are. However, you don’t have the right to statutory holiday if you’re a child under school leaving age. There are some people who don’t have an automatic right to statutory paid holiday. These are people who are self-employed or who work in the armed forces, police or civil protection services. If you work in one of these jobs you will need to check your contract of employment to see if you get paid holiday and how much you should get.

The law doesn’t say how much contractual holiday you should get, or whether or not it should be paid. If you’re an agency worker, you may also have the right to the same amount of contractual holiday as permanent employees. You are entitled to a minimum of 5.6 weeks’ holiday a year if you work full time, or a pro-rata amount if you work part time. This is called statutory holiday. The maximum amount of statutory paid holiday you can be entitled to is 28 days. This applies even if you work more than five days a week. To help you work out your exact entitlement, you can use the calculator on the GOV.UK website at www.gov.uk. Your contract of employment should tell you more about your rights to paid holiday. If you do not have a written contract of employment, you may still have rights which have been verbally agreed with your employer, or which have come about because of the way things are usually done in your workplace.

How much paid holiday can you take? Your contract of employment may give you the right to take more than the statutory amount of paid holiday. However, it cannot give you less. If your contract gives you the right to take more than the statutory amount of paid holiday, this is called contractual holiday.

How much holiday pay should you get? You should be paid at the same rate as you are normally paid when you are working.

Rolled up holiday pay Some employers and employment agencies may say that your hourly rate of pay includes an amount for holiday pay, and that they expect you to save this part of your pay to cover your holidays. This is known as ‘rolled up’ holiday pay. Rolled up holiday pay is against the law, unless your holiday pay is paid on top of your basic pay and it’s clear what this amount is for, for example, it’s clearly set out on your payslip. If you think you are getting rolled up holiday pay, you should get advice.

When can you take holiday? You can ask to take your holiday whenever you choose, as long as you give your employer the right notice. However, your employer does not have to agree to your request. If your employer wants to refuse your leave, they must give you the same amount of notice as the holiday that you wish to take.

You are dismissed for complaining when your leave is refused If your employer refuses to let you take holiday you are entitled to and dismisses you when you complain, you should talk to an experienced adviser straight away The Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) operates a telephone helpline which provides information and advice about employment issues. The number is 0845 747 4747 (textphone 0845 606 1600).

Children’s Parties

Children’s Parties ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

O

Can you believe it - your darling son or daughter is another year older nce you’ve finished wondering where all the time has gone, it’s time to start thinking about a birthday party and with more options available than ever before, planning can be a great deal

of fun. Begin by setting the budget (and then spend the rest of your time trying not to blow it!). Deciding how much you are prepared to spend will influence most of your decisions so it’s a good place to start. Always make sure you have a small contingency because, with the best will in the world, there may be areas where you overspend!! Once your budget is in place, start looking at how best to spend it -time to nail down the specifics – date, start and finish time, theme, venue, guest list, food and party bags. Although it can mean more work it can be useful to pick a theme, you can choose something your child is particularly interested in or something completely random. A theme can sometimes influence where you hold the party so it’s best to decide it first.

Here are some of the most popular children’s party themes : ✯ Superheroes ✯ Pirates and Princesses ✯ Football ✯ Jungle ✯ Farm ✯ Halloween ✯ Circus ✯ Dinosaurs ✯ Gymnastics ✯ Horses ✯ Swimming party

24 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Another danger area for the budget is party bags and favours. If you are making your own party bags you can either buy them ready filled online, you can buy party bags with fillers from local shops or you can buy plain paper bags, personalise them and fill them with favours of your choice. Popular fillers are: ✯ Items for the pencil case – pens, pencils, sharpeners and rubbers ✯ Mini chocolate bars/ boxes of raisins/ sweetie bags ✯ Plastic jewellery ✯ Colouring books/ notepads ✯ Balloons ✯ Whistles/kazoos ✯ Games/puzzles ✯ Hair accessories ✯ Stickers ✯ Bubbles ✯ Key rings ✯ Yo-yos/bouncy balls

Next is the venue. Your theme might be tied up with the venue – unless you’re lucky enough to have one in your home, you’ll only ever hold a swimming party at the swimming pool! Otherwise you have three choices. You can have the party at home, a dedicated party venue such as soft play / bowling alley or a village / community hall. Having the party at home means you won’t incur a hire cost and it can be handy in terms of not having to travel out but bear in mind all the tidying up you will have to do afterwards!! Using a party venue usually means that you will have to do very little, these places often have their own invitations and can supply food and party bags. It is, however, usually the most expensive to hire. Using a village or community hall sits in the middle ground and gives you complete control over time and entertainment. Once you know where and when your party is going to take place you can move on to your invitations. You can make them yourself and get your children involved which can be a fun activity or you can buy them ready made. If you are having a theme then the invitations should match it. On your invitations make sure you include the start and end times, venue, details of anything specific each child should bring, for example, swimming costumes and RSVP details. You can then have fun buying decorations – balloons, streamers, table cloths, piñatas, plates and cups. You may find that this is the first place you exceed your budget! Use a party store if you can as they will stock the widest ranges. The next big hurdle is to plan the entertainment. Will you hire a professional such as a disco, magician, clown or face painter or provide games and activities yourself? Games can be centred around the theme or traditional party games such as pass the parcel. If you are hiring a professional then ask about – who have your friends used before? Use local press and the internet. Once you have decided then get in touch and discuss price and times. Finally, plan the party food and, most importantly, the cake. Where you can, plan your food around your theme. Decide between hot and cold food. Hot dogs and mini pizzas are popular choices but can be hard work when you consider that cold food can be made in advance. If you are getting the birthday cake made professionally make sure the person making it can deliver it in good time (preferably direct to your venue to save any accidents!). Also consider the other parents who will be at the party and make sure that you at least provide a drink and some snacks for them.

Walking Etiquette Mind Your Manners!

Dog walking is great for getting fresh air and exercise. No matter what the weather, here are a few tips on how you can make your daily walks a pleasure, rather than a chore... Correct Leads Fitting a collar A collar and lead is a walking must as even well-trained dogs may bolt into harm’s way if they spot a squirrel. When you choose a collar, remember that your dog will fight against a tight one and will slip out of a loose one. A perfect fit is loose enough to place two fingers comfortably beneath.

Gencon headcollar If your dog pulls, and is getting stronger by the day, then try a Gencon. One of the simplest and most effective headcollars available on the market, Gencons are gentle on the dog and very effective. The Gencon consists of two simple loops that apply gentle pressure when your dog pulls, the lead gently but effectively stops your dog pulling forwards. They are made from soft yet durable fabric and are specifically designed not to pull up into your dog’s eyes or uncomfortably turn their head. The Gencon headcollar is a perfect training lead for both puppies and grown dogs.

Obedience Training Pulling Your dog should be responsive to commands. If he pulls, say ‘No’ and stand still until they stop straining. It may seem like a battle of wills to start, but your dog will soon learn that pulling equals no walk.

Recall When your dog is off the lead, you must be able to recall him. Start by using an extending lead or a training lead. Let your dog walk a few metres in front, then call him

back. If he responds, give him a treat. Extend the lead each time until you are confident that he responds to your commands consistently.

SIT! Take your dog somewhere without too much distraction. Keep him on the lead and say ‘Sit’ whilst gently pressing on his hips. When he sits, give him a treat immediately. Treats work wonders! If you are still finding it difficult to get your pooch to respond to the basics, you may consider dog obedience classes. We have a list of trainers in the local area, just pop in to ask us!

“Leaving your dogs’ mess is not only against the law, but it’s unhygienic and spreads disease.”

Clearing up dog poo Leaving your dogs’ mess is not only against the law, but it’s unhygienic and spreads disease. Make sure you always have an ample supply on bags when you go out for your daily walk. Handy containers that attach to the lead are a great way to stop you from getting caught short. If there is a bin available, use it. If not, take it home with you. It is basic dog walking etiquette and prevents pathways and pavements from becoming a minefield.

Enjoy! The summer is a great time to be out and about with your dog, but it’s important to be a responsible dog owner and stick to good etiquette. From good basic training to considerate hygiene, make sure you’re prepared for the great British summer and those lovely walks.

Family life

Becoming a Nanny to my first grandchild last year has given me food for thought ❱ BY MELANIE FOSTER, MUNCHKINS KINDERGARTEN

It has encouraged me to explore beyond the safety and familiarity of my Pre-school setting and discover how babies and young children in our nursery are supported in their development through sensory experiences with natural objects. Through recent studies I was aware of the work of Elinor Goldschmied, who developed treasure baskets for babies who can sit up and the heuristic play approach for toddlers. Babies and toddlers learn from experience and love to explore all sorts of shapes, sizes and textures of even the most basic household items and so I set myself the task of creating a basket of my own for my grandson. We live in a world where colourful, plastic toys often dominate the shelves of toy shops, but these may be dull and disappointing for babies, who use their sense of taste, smell and touch to explore. These toys may all look different but each one smells, tastes and feels the same - it is unstimulating to a baby’s senses. Using heuristic play with babies stimulates all

the senses, creating a rich learning experience. My first port of call to find objects was my

own kitchen, where I found; small metallic chutney bowls, a metal balloon whisk, a wooden honey dipper and several other textured items. A trip to a local pound store also provided me with a natural sponge, wooden pastry brush and child sized wooden spoon. Once I had begun my collection there was no stopping me and I have put some items away to add later to ring the changes. I found a small, low sided wicker basket and placed the items inside ready for my grandson’s next visit. It was really easy to create and I am looking forwards to changing some items as he grows to create other baskets that contain shiny, noisy and other exciting objects. Have a go yourselves and discover how easy it is to provide cheap, stimulating activities that will grow with your child.

Adult Learners

Adult Learners Week ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Adult Learner’s Week is the UK’s largest annual festival of learning, inspiring thousands of people each year to discover how learning can change their lives “There is a huge demand in the area for HGV drivers and gaining your license can open up many job opportunities.”

R

un in conjunction with the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) and now in its 23rd year Adult Learner’s Week is taking place from the 14th to the 20th June. The organisers are encouraging adults to give learning a go and try something new. There are many benefits associated with taking a course. Not only can you add to your existing skills and give your confidence a boost but you could find yourself adding to your employability. There are many opportunities in the area for adult learning which offer you the opportunity to gain useful qualifications and life skills. For an initial check to see what’s out there, visit www.2aspire.org.uk where you can search for courses in Boston, Spalding and the surrounding areas before visiting specific websites for more detail. The following institutions offer courses for adults in the area: Boston College offer a range of courses for learners aged 19+, ranging from ‘bite-size’ quick courses to year-long evening courses. They also make sure they offer options which are cost-effective for all, with courses from £7.50 and some are free. Courses on offer include bookkeeping, accounting, curtain making and soft furnishings, garden design, interior design, nail treatments, food safety, electrical installations, GCSE English Language, GCSE Biology, GCSE Mathematics and counselling skills. The college is holding an open evening in Spalding on the 10th June from 5-7pm and in Boston on the 12th June from 6-8pm. Boston Training Hub, part of Lincoln College is based at Wide Bargate and offers courses in business and administration, customer service, retail, management, hospitality, ICT, accounting to level 4, NVQ courses, traineeships, short courses and programmes for the unemployed. Grantham College is a real gem for mini courses – they offer a wide variety of diverse subjects such as an introduction to chicken keeping, marketing your club, group or small business, minion inspired cupcakes, spreadsheets for household accounts and perfect party planning. There really is something for everyone!

Riverside Training is based in Spalding and they are a specialist childcare training company with over 20 years’ experience. They provide qualifications for childcare workers, teaching assistants, administration staff and managers in the workplace. All members of staff have a considerable amount of experience of delivering relevant qualifications to customer service personnel, business administrators, early year’s practitioners, teaching assistants and managers in various settings. Learning Works East Anglia has offices in Spalding, Wisbech, Kings Lynn, Stamford and Louth with their head office based in Moulton Chapel. They describe themselves as a “local resource for the improvement of skills and qualifications, leading to better employability and the opportunity for adults to receive nationally recognised qualifications”. They offer a diverse range of courses and qualification working with awarding bodies City & Guilds, OCR, BCS, edexcel and ncfe. Driving There is a huge demand in the area for HGV drivers and gaining your license can open up many job opportunities. Often an employer will pay to put you through your theory and your test but you can self-fund if you wish. There are four different categories of licence which dictate the type of HGV you can drive and are as follows: Cat C1 Licence – this allows you to drive HGVs weighing between 3500 and 7500kg with or without a trailer weighing no more than 750kg. Training for this type of licence usually takes around 4-5 days. Cat C1 + E licence. This is the same as a C1 licence but with a trailer weighing more than 750kg. Training for this type of licence usually takes around 8-10 days. Cat C licence. This is your standard entry level HGV licence. The average Cat C vehicle is the most common in use in the UK and is usually an 18 tonne rigid. You must be at least 18 years old to undertake this training. Training for this licence usually takes around 4-5 days. Cat C + E licence. This is the same as a Cat C licence but with a trailer over 750kg. This licence will allow you to drive the largest vehicles allowed in the HGV industry. To obtain this licence you must already have a Cat C licence. Training for this type of licence usually takes around 8-10 days. Horsebox. If you passed your driving test after 1st January 1997 then you will need additional tests if you want to drive a horsebox which weighs over 3500kg. As well as training on not only the different types of horsebox you will also cover topics such as loading / unloading, driver and load security, driving hours, rules and regulations, international driving and tachographs. Expect to spend a week on this.

Pinchbeck Carnival ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

T

This year’s Carnival on June 14th promises to be the best yet

he Carnival fun officially begins the night before on the 13th with bingo in the marquee on Rotten Row, opening at 6:30pm with eyes down at 7. On the Saturday, the Carnival parade, taking as its theme ‘Cities of the World’, starts at 12 noon from Wimberley Way and will travel along Rotten Row, Brownlow Crescent, Bear Lane and Knight Street before travelling back up Rotten Row and ending at the playing field. Whilst enjoying the procession make sure you look out for this year’s carnival Queen, Annabel Stockdale and Princesses Cecelia Tulloch-Cotton and Emily van der Weyden, who were crowned at a recent Carnival disco. After the Carnival parade there is much to see and do at the playing field. There will be many stalls, children’s rides, a craft show and fancy dress competition. This will be followed by an onion rolling contest, which is a new addition to this year’s festivities. There are a variety of Arena acts this year including Kesteven Morris Dancers, The Breaston Highlanders Marching Band, Zumba and a performance by Spalding School of Dance. The main event will be The Mid Wales Axemen who will be performing two amazing axe racing displays. Axe racing sees competitors cut through lengths of timber using an axe or saw in either the fastest time or using the least number of blows.

If you would like to get involved please call Jane Amess on 01775 769729 for more information.

“The main event will be The Mid Wales Axemen who will be performing two amazing axe racing displays.”

During the day there will also be an exciting Spitfire flypast. From 6pm there will be a Party in the Park with live music from local band Bad to the Bone. On Sunday 15th there will be a United Church Service of Worship at 10:30am. Following the service, Sunday lunch will be served at 12:30 at a cost of £7. Tickets need to be purchased in advance and can be done so by calling Chris Schofield on 01775 680444. You don’t have to be at the service to go to the lunch – however all are welcome at both.

Exploring Bourne on foot ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Being steeped in so much history, the best way to experience the town is on foot. From ancient churches to a town centre full of independent retailers, take a day out and get exploring “You will even find a selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants to round off your visit with something to eat and drink.”

The Red Hall

Wellhead Gardens

Bourne Town Hall

M

ake your first stop Bourne Abbey ourne Abbey. Also known as the parish church of St Peter and St Paul and founded in 1138, it is one of the oldest buildings in Bourne - the Abbey is also the town’s only Grade I listed building. Although it has stood at the site for over 850 years, in 1536 the abbey, along with the Bourne’s monastic houses, fell victim to Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries but was revived in the late 19th century and remains in use today. The Red Hall. Standing to the west of the Abbey, the Red Hall dates back to the early 1600s and has seen a wide variety of uses, from a home to part of a Victorian railway complex. The building is Grade II listed. The house is believed to have been built for a wealthy London Grocer, Gilbert Fisher. After his death, there were various owners until the Digby Family came to the Hall where they remained until 1836, when the property was again leased to various tenants. It was sold again in 1860 to Bourne & Essendine Railway Company for use as a booking office & Stationmaster’s House. In 1892 the railway company attempted to pull the Hall down but were stopped by a public outcry and the building was saved. In 1962 Bourne United Charities acquired the Freehold, saving the building once again from demolition. The hall is open to visitors every morning except Sunday. Wellhead Gardens. The gardens are an area of parkland just a short step from the shops and offices where many go for a spot of peace and relaxation. This is the best time of year to visit because the main path is lined with ornamental cherry trees that produce a mass of magnificent blossom each year. The 21 acres were

Bourne Abbey

developed in the years following the Second World War as parkland open to the public, and the development of the War Memorial and surrounding gardens which opened in 1956. Within the gardens, the pool, or Wellhead, is one of England’s most ancient artesian wells. The water attracts wildlife and black swans, normally indigenous to Australia and Tasmania, have made their home here. The Bourne Eau runs through and weeping willow and horse chestnut trees abound together with many other species . The Wellhead is also the site of Bourne Castle. Bourne Castle was a Norman construction built by Baldwin FitzGilbert . The castle was motte and double bailey which was destroyed after being used by Oliver Cromwell’s troops in 1645 and a farmhouse was built on the site. Traces of the enclosed mound and inner and outer moats are all that now survive. The hill around the castle is supposedly the site of a tunnel which runs to either the Red Hall or Abbey Church. Also owned by Bourne United Charities, the land is now a park and open to the public. Bourne Woods. A great place to take the children and the dogs, this ancient woodland is made up of mixed conifers and semi-natural broadleaf trees. The car park and picnic area are great facilities but there are no toilets. Visitors can walk up to the ponds where kingfishers and herons can often be seen. Bourne Woods are owned and managed by the Forestry Commission who are responsible for planting, looking after and felling the trees within the wood. They also maintain the paths, and recreational areas within the wood, mowing the rides and the car park in the summer. They are also responsible for the conservation of the wood and the wildlife within it. Once you have visited the areas of interest then your last port of call should be the town centre. It benefits from a number of independent retailers selling a wide variety of products and services. You will even find a selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants to round off your visit with something to eat and drink. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Home Project

Extending your house ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

A

When space becomes an issue in your home you are ultimately faced with two options – extend or move

t this stage it is worth getting your calculator out and doing your sums. If it is cheaper for you to move then your improvement plans end there, but if you feel adding more space (and thus more value to your home) is the best way to go then the next step is to work out how and where you will get the most benefit from an extension. From a small porch to a two-storey extension we explore your options. Before you get too far down the line with your planning it is worth taking some time out to consider who is going to undertake the work for you. Make sure you only use professionals – not only will they do the job properly but they are conversant with planning restrictions and building regulations which will ensure you don’t fall foul of the law and end up having to (in the worst instances) take down all that has been built. As well as a builder you may need an architect so make sure you factor in a cost for this as well. The best way to find these people initially is word of mouth – Ask friends and members of your family to recommend workmen they have used in the past who did a good job. You could look in local newspapers and magazines for advertisements and ask a selection round to give a quote – always get several quotes for comparison purposes. You could also visit www.ratedpeople.com which provides a similar service. So before you get plans drawn up and planning permission filed think about being smart with your space. Where is the need greatest and what will add the most value to your home, for example, extra bathrooms and a larger kitchen will add more value to a family home than any other room. So which extensions give the best value?

“Where is the need greatest and what will add the most value to your home?”

A new porch. This is a small extension and can be added to the front, side or rear of the house. Because of the size they generally do not require planning permission but your builder will be able to advise you on this. You can expect to pay anything from £2,500.

A sunroom. Picture a conservatory but with a roof and walls and there you have your sunroom. These cost more than a conservatory but have more of a “room” feel to them and tend to be warmer so they can be purposed, for example, used as a dining room. Expect to pay anything from £12,000.

Over structure extension. We’re talking here about building over your garage. This is often work-intensive as usually the brickwork and outer walls will need altering. That said it is an easy way of adding a bedroom. Because of all the work involved expect to pay anything from £22,000.

Single storey extension. A ground floor extension built onto the house. This is a popular extension as it presents minimal intrusion in your day to day life during building and you are unlikely to need planning permission. A single storey extension is a good bet to extend your kitchen or turn your kitchen into a kitchendiner. Expect to pay anything from £10,000.

Two storey extension. Also known as a multistorey extension this is the largest extension you can do, adding space to all floors of your home. Planning permission is likely to be lengthy and consultation with neighbours will be necessary. Make sure your architect is involved from the outset and working closely with your builder. Expect to pay anything from £22,000 upwards but this will add the most value to your home long term so well worth considering. 40 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Gardening

Your garden in June ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

June is a very busy month in the garden with attention now needed in all areas, from your lawn and borders to vegetables and fruit “You can also begin to harvest most of your herbs. Pick and use fresh as required or pick them all and dry for future use.”

L

ate spring is a great time to reap rewards from your garden after all the hours of preparation you have put in. June is the month to shade your greenhouse to make sure they stay cool and to avoid scorch to any of the plants or vegetables you are growing in there. June is one of the drier months and during dry spells this area is particularly susceptible so you may find yourself needing to give additional water to your plants. Keep an eye on the weather forecast – don’t wait until your plants have begun to wilt. Whilst you have your watering can or hosepipe in your hand make sure you keep your bird bath topped up to keep encouraging wildlife into your garden. And speaking of wildlife you may start to notice aphids, vine weevils, slugs, snails and caterpillars in your garden. Make sure you take the necessary steps to control them. To keep your garden in tip-top condition heading into the summer make sure you keep an eye on the following;

Lawn & Borders

Weeds love this time of year so grab a hoe and weed your borders. Whilst lawn cutting can be sporadic while the weather is cooler, now is the time to begin cutting the lawn at least once a week. It’s also worth considering a good quality feed to keep your lawn verdant all summer, for the best results read your instructions carefully and use as directed.

Plants & Flowers

For a great burst of colour on in the garden now is the time to position hanging baskets and containers outside. Plant out summer bedding plants. Tackle ground elder as these weeds can quickly become intrusive. The warmer weather and longer days really accelerates growth in the garden. To stay in control, stake tall or floppy plants. Also tie-in

and train climbing plants such as Clematis. To ensure a good nutrient uptake and a good performance next year take the chance to prune springflowering shrubs and deadhead Rhododendrons and Camellias. In the herb garden you can pick the flower heads from lavender to dry or use in your cooking. You can also begin to harvest most of your herbs. Pick and use fresh as required or pick them all and dry for future use.

Vegetables

June is a real harvest-fest in the vegetable patch. You can start with your salad items - lettuce, radish, pea-tips and delicious early potatoes. Also, get ready to harvest onions and garlic – an indication they are ready is to look for their leaves beginning to turn yellow. To ensure tomatoes are getting as many of the plant’s nutrients as possible, pinch the side-shoots. Once the salad potatoes are up, plant out Charlotte and Maris Piper potatoes along with courgettes, squash, tomatoes, sweetcorn. It’s also a great time to sow more vegetables. You can get beetroot, carrots, courgettes, French beans, lettuce, marrows, pumpkins, runner beans, pak choi, peas, radish, sweetcorn and turnips into the ground.

Fruit

June in the fruit garden is all about pruning! Keeping your fruit in check now will make for bumper harvests down the line. Start by pruning plum and cherry trees. You should also prune soft fruits such as gooseberries and red and white currants. Although fruit trees naturally shed during the month (otherwise known as the June drop) you should try give them an extra thinning- out for extra help. A good guide is to take one extra piece of fruit per cluster. 44 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Moving House

Moving House ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

I

With the housing market finally back on track, many people are choosing to move house

f this is something you have been considering then now seems to be a good time with demand rising. For most people the first port of call is their lender or a financial adviser. Find out what your total cost will be and by this I don’t just mean your new mortgage payments and arrangement fees but also stamp duty, conveyancing and removals. Once you have all of your numbers worked out and your new mortgage agreement in principle from your lender then it is time to consult your local estate agents for marketing advice and valuations. You can check the average prices in your area using Rightmove or Zoopla as a starting point but local agents will have a better idea of this than national websites. Simply Property’s Karen Elvin has this to say about choosing the right agent: “Always make sure you speak to 2 or 3 agents and try to arrive at a valuation that is somewhere in the middle of them. Beware of any agent that comes in massively high as marketing your property at that price will not help you at all. By arriving at a realistic asking price you are far more likely to get people through the door and the offers coming in more quickly.” Once you have decided on your estate agent and negotiated your terms and fees then it is time to prepare your home for sale. Make any necessary repairs or gain quotes for repairs to pass on. Most people like to do a quick paint touch up and while this is not necessary, if you do then make sure you use neutral tones to appeal to a larger section of buyers. In order to get the most out of your viewing make sure kerb appeal, that is, how your home looks from the outside, is high. It might be that your front door needs a fresh coat of paint or your front garden or drive need a really good tidy. Giving a good first impression is crucial. Once you receive an offer for your home, provided it is not the full asking price (which is generally not the case) then you have a decision to make as to whether or not to accept it. If your home has just gone on the market then you can afford to take your time. It is worth remembering that the price being offered is sometimes not as important as the position that the buyer is in – are they a cash buyer, do they have a property to sell, are they in a chain and if so how big? All of these will play a part in deciding who you sell to. Once you have accepted an offer you are happy with the next step is Conveyancing. Conveyancing is the legal process involving the transfer of property ownership titles from one person to another. This can be done either by a solicitor (all are qualified to do this work, although it pays to hire a licenced conveyancer. As with

“Always make sure you speak to 2 or 3 agents and try to arrive at a valuation that is somewhere in the middle of them. Beware of any agent that comes in massively high as marketing your property at that price will not help you at all.”

estate agents, make sure you get 2 or 3 quotes from conveyancers and where possible try to negotiate a no sale, no fee deal should the worst happen and the sale fall through. When all of this is in hand you need to prepare to move out. Start by deciding if you are going to hire a removal firm or move yourself. If you want to hire a removal firm then start by finding your local removal firms and contacting them for quotes. Remember to check what their insurance covers in the case of loss or breakages. Even the best firms have the occasional accident! If you are moving yourself then investigate van hire and who will be around to help you on your moving day (all help welcome!!). Source some boxes (your removal firm may be able to provide these) to begin packing and consider designating a room (perhaps the garage or spare room) to put your pre-packed items into ready for moving day. Once your searches and conveyancing have been completed then contracts will be exchanged and within a couple of weeks completion day will see monies handed over and you being presented with the keys to your new home! Time to let the removal company do what they do best, take your final meter readings and leave a note for your buyers with useful information.

Volvo V40 Cross Country

Gone are the days of ‘wardrobe on wheels’ or ‘only teachers drive those’ jokes...

V

olvo now has some seriously stylish cars in its stable - and the V40 is one of them. The V40 Cross Country combines class-leading driving dynamics, interior comfort and a rugged personality with low emissions, impressive fuel economy and pioneering safety technology. Start/Stop is fitted as standard across the range, together with Bluetooth hands-free communication and wireless music playing, plus City Safety autobraking technology and the V40’s world-first pedestrian airbag. The Cross Country is also the only car in its class to be available with Pedestrian Detection technology. It has a more rugged style than the standard V40, and is distinct to the sports styling of the R-Design model. It features a number of unique details which include: silver roof rails; contrasting front bumper, honeycomb mesh grille and upright day-running lights; sculpted sills and contrasting rear bumper with integrated skid plate.

“Put simply, the V40 delivers unprecedented choice in the premium hatchback sector without compromise. It’s a great car; not the cheapest – but you get what you pay for - usually.”

In D2 SE Powershift guise, the 1560cc, fourcylinder, eight valve, oil-burner delivers 113bhp, with 62mph from standstill arriving in a conservative 12.1 seconds. However, the relatively wide car is planted well on the road and takes corners with little body lean. The diesel rattle is barely noticeable, even on start up, and the seats are ultra supportive on long commutes. The V40 provides enough space for four-up, or five if you have two adults in the front and three small children in the rear on booster seats. The boot, although not massive, is decent enough to shove in everything a young family might need – from a week’s worth of shopping to a couple of baby buggies and all the gear that goes with young kids. Of course, safety is never an issue with Volvo - and the V40 is no different. It is one of the safest cars in its class, having achieved high scores recorded by EuroNCAP in crash tests. And, as you might expect with a diesel turbo, the £24,805 D2 Cross Country SE Powershift is an efficient motor. On average it can return up to 68.9mpg, so it certainly endorses Volvo’s thinking that it “offers the solution for drivers who want a premium vehicle experience with low emissions and low running costs, but who don’t want to sacrifice equipment, styling or safety features”. Put simply, the V40 delivers unprecedented choice in the premium hatchback sector without compromise. It’s a great car; not the cheapest – but you get what you pay for - usually.
