Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated
Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

What are your Christmas traditions? Do you spend Christmas Day at home with the family or do you venture out and let someone else do the cooking? Do you go away for Christmas, either in the UK or abroad? Whatever you do it’s always a good opportunity to relax after the inevitable craziness of December! At the very least it’s a chance to pause and take a deep breath before you hit the January sales! Whatever you are doing family and friends are often at the heart of our celebrations so make sure you enjoy every minute. We take a look at a few gifts you might like to buy as well as some recipes for Boxing Day which won’t take up too much of your relaxation time! Elsewhere in the issue we look at the importance of having a Will – it’s not something we think about in our day to day lives but once you are gone – especially if you have children – do you want your wishes to be known rather than the courts deciding? It’s not as difficult as procedure as you might think to get a Will put into place so if you haven’t already got one then now is as good a time as any to get it done. We also look at care options for the elderly, if you have a loved one who has recently found they are not coping so well on their own any more then there are choices available to them which you can help with. All that remains is for me to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and wish you all the best for 2016. Enjoy the issue.

Spalding wins gold – again!
Councillors aid village football team Footballers at a club in South Holland have extra reason to celebrate after two councillors bought them a new set of goalposts. Long Sutton councillors Laura Eldridge and Jack Tyrell used their designated ward budgets to buy two new goals for Tydd St Mary Football Club. The goalposts, which cost just over £700, have ensured that the club’s Under 13’s side can continue playing competitive matches this season. Joe Johnson, manager of the under 13’s team, said: “The football club is extremely grateful for the time and effort given by Jack and Laura.

“Over the past year the club has expanded its number of teams dramatically and we now cater for 5 to 13 year-olds alongside our female and male senior sides. “Jack and Laura’s hard work and extreme generosity has allowed us to get the new goals and also provided sponsorship to our men’s reserve side. “Without their effort we would have been seriously stuck, so we would like to say a massive thanks for what they have done for us and the local community.” All South Holland Councillors have designated ward budgets which they regularly use to support worthy causes across the district.

The Young Adult team came a fantastic Second to the National ACF (Army Cadet Force) Champions from Durham ACF. The National Inter Services First Aid Competition is an annual event, placing together teams from voluntary organisations such as St John, the cadet forces ACF (Army Cadet Force), ATC, CCF (Combined Cadet Force), Sea Cadets and Marine Cadets, as well as other organisations such as the Police Cadets. The ATC Wing has supported this event for over ten years, providing casualties, judges and support in various ways, it has also previously competed at this National Level well throughout the past years, but this year was a great result plus a first for Spalding squadron.
Look before you book Thinking of eating out this Christmas? If you’re planning that special Christmas meal with work colleagues, friends or family we would like to remind you to ‘look before you book’. Christmas is a time to enjoy good company and good food without worrying about food poisoning. But the truth is, you can’t tell a restaurant’s hygiene standards by how clean and tidy it is. It’s the things you can’t see – like germs spread by bad hygiene practices. There’s one easy way to set your mind at rest – check the Food Hygiene Rating which tells you about the hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses.
Simply visit the Food Standards Agency website: www.food.gov.uk/ratings or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker, if you can’t see one, just ask. Councillor Malcolm Chandler, Portfolio Holder for Environmental Health, said: “Our Food, Health and Safety Team works hard by continually monitoring standards across the district and offering advice and guidance on good hygiene practices and I’m pleased to say we generally have good levels of standards across the district. “A good food hygiene rating is something to be proud of. It matters to customers so we are
encouraging all businesses in the district to display their rating and have a prosperous Christmas season.” The ratings are determined following an unannounced visit by local authority food safety officers, who follow national guidelines and are trained to make sure ratings are consistently applied. The ratings run from 0 to 5, with a 5 rating meaning a very good level of food hygiene. Around 97% of food businesses in South Holland are rated 3 or better so there are plenty of places with good standards. If you don’t see a green and black sticker in the window or you spot a low rating online, you can make a better informed choice. To keep up to date with the latest businesses who are awarded a 5 rating follow South Holland District Facebook page www.facebook.com/ SouthHollandDistrictCouncil

Food Hygiene Training Courses Businesses in South Holland can boost their Food Hygiene Ratings by taking part in special training workshops run by South Holland District Council. The sessions are specifically tailored for businesses and aimed at supporting owners and staff. Participants will get a certificate and clear action plan of the steps they need to take to improve their rating as well as advice on how to apply for a re-rating. The sessions are being held at South Holland District Council’s offices in Priory Road, Spalding, on an ad-hoc basis to suit businesses. The sessions will run for around two hours and cost £25 each, subject to a minimum of four. If businesses have an interpreter then the sessions can be offered in various languages. The workshops coincide with ongoing work by South Holland District Council’s Food Safety Team to help businesses across the district improve their ratings. The Food Hygiene Rating tells you about the hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses. The ratings run from 0-5, with a 5 rating meaning a very good level of food hygiene. Around 97% of food businesses in South Holland are currently rated 3 or better and there are no firms with the lowest-ranked zero rating. It’s really easy to check for Food Hygiene Ratings. Visit the Food Standards Agency website: www. food.gov.uk/ratings or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker - if you can’t see one, just ask. For more information about training workshops or to book places email South Holland District Council’s Food Safety team at foodhs@sholland.gov.uk

As we gear up for Christmas and start spending on presents, food, drink and entertainment, we need to keep a careful check on our budgets, so that come January, we are not suffering a mighty hangover that takes half the year to pay off. Similarly Councils around the Country are also preparing their budgets for the next few years and just at the moment local government is taking the brunt of the government’s determination to get us back into the black. We will not know the detail of the expected severe cuts to local government spending until the week before Christmas, but are already preparing for the worst. While the District Council is in a relatively good place financially and has plans in place to cope with the anticipated cuts from central government, Lincolnshire County Council has a huge challenge ahead of it if it is to balance the books. Cuts to many frontline services are inevitable, having already reduced its budget by £129million since 2011 due to previous reductions in grant from government, it is now expecting to find another £130million of savings which means that the likelihood is that it will only be able to provide the statutory minimum services and sometimes not even that. It is amazing how one seemingly good announcement from the Chancellor, “the Living Wage”, can have such a huge impact on local government. The cost of implementing the living wage is expected to add over £30million a year to adult care alone by 2020. The other announcement at the recent Conservative Party Conference was that Councils would be able to retain all the business rates, (currently most is returned to central government), but would in return no longer get a revenue support grant from government. Sounds good, but will actually leave Lincolnshire in the region of £35million worse off, so some balancing to do before that is enacted.
So unless we are going to get a surprise present from the Chancellor, which would seem highly unlikely, we are facing some stark choices in January. Once we know the final outcome there will be a public consultation (in January), so please take time to read it carefully when it comes out. On a more positive front Greater Lincolnshire’s bid for devolution of powers from central government around the economic growth, infrastructure and skills agenda, health and police, are progressing at a pace, so next year promises to be a year of opportunity in this area at least. On a local note, Holbeach Parish Council is discussing the option of becoming a Town Council with a Mayor. Having looked into this I am not sure it will give them any more power than the current Chairman has at the moment, so am yet to be convinced what the benefits are, other than probably a costly chain of office. There is an argument to say that it may be in a better position for powers to be devolved to it from the District for example, but the term, ‘be careful what you wish for’, may be worth considering, because as local government has found out over the years, devolvement of powers and more responsibility doesn’t always mean money follows and you can be considerably worse off as a result. On the Festive Front, Spalding has already had its Christmas Light switch on and Christmas Market, so those in Spalding should be in the Christmas spirit already, but for those in Holbeach the St. Nicholas Fayre is on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th December 2015 from 10.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m. It will include a Craft & Food Fayre, Santa’s Grotto, Street Entertainment, Fairground Ride, Christingle and Dog Show! Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas.

Simply Property
Your First Buy to Let, a Smart Investment Buy to let property is still a popular long term investment. Property can often appear simpler to understand than stocks and shares, here’s our guide to buying to your first buy to let property ❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND, SIMPLY PROPERTY
SIMPLY PROPERTY If you are thinking of selling your home or are looking for your next home please call SIMPLY PROPERTY on 01775 640622 to arrange a free valuation or to be added to our mailing list.
“You are in a strong position as a buy-to-let investor being chain free.”
Research the market Ensuring you are familiar with the pitfalls as well as the benefits is essential. Speak to people you may know who are already experienced buy-to-letters, and read guides on the subject such as our beginners guide to property investment. Choose a location Choosing a property for buy to let is all about the location. Tenants, unlike buyers can move out at a months notice and will not hang around for a property that does not fulfil their needs. Depending on your target market you will need to consider the proximity to local schools, transport links, night life and so on. Research what competition you will face by to see the current rental potential is for certain areas and, over time, see which properties take longer to rent out and which areas are popular. Crunch some numbers The excitement of looking around houses can take over all too quickly. Put pen to paper before you view properties and write down the cost of the house and the likely rental yield. Buy to let lenders often require a deposit of between 15% and 30% and the rental income to cover 125% of the mortgage repayments. Some lenders may accept less but at the expense of a low interest rate. It is also important to have a contingency fund for when the property is not being rented and mortgage repayments must be met, as well as repairs which ought to be fixed quickly else your tenant will be voting with their feet! Shop around Remember, this is an investment property – the head should always rule. Take your time to find the property that offers you the best return. By all means visit your high street bank for comparison but there are a wide range of finance options available for purchasing a buy to let property these days, including dedicated mortgage

brokers to help you get the best deal. Target your tenant Novices are often quick to see themselves living in their properties. Remember you are not the tenant and put yourself in their shoes. Young professionals may require something more stylish, perhaps in a location with access to night life and good links to road and rail. A family will need space and to be local to schools. Don’t be over ambitious Sure there are many who have made their millions from property, but experts suggest the days of double digit price rises are over. Focus on the long term and allow the rent to grow over time to help fund additional property investments. Negotiate You are in a strong position as a buy-to-let investor being chain free. Vendors are often keen that what can be a lengthy transaction be as swift and smooth as possible. Discounts can be negotiated in order to generate a quick sale. Know the pitfalls Don’t ignore what could go wrong. How many months can you afford to pay the mortgage should the property sit empty for some months. Will you require your money out quickly? The property market has been strong for some time, if there were to be a drop in value could you ride it out? A simple rule of thumb is to factor in the property sitting empty for two months of the year to provide a buffer. If you are unable to cover the cost of any major repair not covered by insurance such as the heating system don’t invest yet. Consider how hands-on you want to be Buying a property is only the first step. You will need to find a tenant, deal with enquiries and collect payment. It is possible to do this yourself but if you’ve a full time job you may prefer to hand the property management to an agent. For a percentage fee they will find tenants, deal with problems and will have relationships with plumbers, electricians etc. should repairs be required. You can make more money by renting the property out yourself but be prepared to give up weekends and evenings on viewings, advertising and repairs If you are looking for a buy to let property or have a property to sell please call Simply Property on 01775 640622 or email sales@simplyproperty.org to find out how we can help.

Advice
Royal Mail Royal Mail handles around 80 million items a day, so it is not surprising that sometimes items are delivered late ❱ BY LISA BARWELL
It is important that any late mail is reported to Royal Mail, as this information can be used to highlight any problem areas. However, your rights and options will depend on the service used to send the mail, whether it was sent correctly and whether there were any circumstances outside Royal Mail’s control.
Why is your mail late? Before you contact Royal Mail to report lost mail, think about whether there is a good reason why your mail turned up late. Reasons for late delivery could include: • your mail was incorrectly addressed • your mail was redirected • the mail collection was missed • your postman or postwoman couldn’t access your building • your mail has been sent or came from abroad, which takes longer • there has been a public holiday If any of these reasons apply, it is unlikely that Royal Mail will investigate, and you are unlikely to be eligible for compensation. It’s a good idea to get a certificate of posting if you’re sending something important. If you’re posting a Special Delivery, Recorded Signed For, Airsure or International Signed For item, you’ll automatically be given a receipt as evidence of posting. If you’re sending something first class, second class, standard parcels, airmail or surface mail and want compensation in the event of loss,
you need to post the item at the post office and ask for a certificate of posting.
Report the delay to Royal Mail If your mail was delivered more than three working days after its due date, you should report this to Royal Mail customer services on 03457 740 740 (textphone: 03456 000 606). • You can also report lost mail online at www.royalmail.com.
Can you claim compensation if your mail is late? If your mail is not delivered within three working days of its due date, or six days if it was redirected, you can claim for compensation for the delay. If you are the sender, you must apply within three months of posting the letter. If you are due to receive the mail, you must apply within one month of receipt. If the mail was sent by special delivery, you can claim if it arrived any later than the guaranteed date and time. You must apply within 14 days of the mail being posted. However, Royal Mail does not have to pay compensation if the delay was caused by a
situation beyond its control or if the item was not posted correctly. Examples where Royal Mail would not have to pay compensation include: • mail that was not addressed correctly • mail where the full postage was not paid • inadequately packaged mail • money or jewellery sent in a service other than special delivery • in severe weather conditions • acts of terrorism or vandalism • mail containing something that Royal Mail cannot carry • Check the due dates for different mail services at www.royalmail.com.
How much compensation can you claim for late mail? You can usually claim compensation of six first class stamps for mail that was delivered late. If the mail was sent by special delivery, you can claim a refund of the postage fee if it arrived any later than the due date and time. You can claim an additional £5 if it was delivered more than 24 hours after the guaranteed time. If it was delivered seven or more working days after the guaranteed time, you can claim an additional £10. • Find out how to claim compensation for late mail If you choose to make a claim for compensation, you can still make a complaint using the complaints procedure. Remember to check that your item was delivered by Royal Mail before making a complaint or claiming compensation. If your mail was delivered by another postal provider, your rights will depend on the terms and conditions of the product or service you bought.

The Do’s and Don’ts of Divorce 1. DO instruct a Resolution lawyer. They follow a code of conduct to ensure that matters are not unnecessarily inflamed. 2. DO NOT take legal advice until you are genuinely ready for a divorce. It is costly to issue divorce proceedings only to withdraw them again as soon as he calls you “his little chicken”. It is also slightly embarrassing having to admit to your solicitor that you now want to stay with the person who has a habit of weeing on the toilet seat. 3. DO try to keep things in perspective. For example, entering into a race to issue the divorce petition is futile. Regardless of who issues, the end result is the same. There is no clause in the Decree Absolute giving you the opportunity to state that he preferred to watch football rather than TOWIE.
to secure a divorce regardless of whether you sign or not.
4. DO NOT try to name a Co-Respondent. The Judge will not be impressed if you try to rope someone else into your divorce proceedings. 5. DO complete and return the Acknowledgement of Service form. If you are the Respondent, and you fail to complete and return the Acknowledgment you are likely to be served personally with the petition. Thereafter, your ex will be able
6. DO NOT start hyperventilating when you receive a petition stating Unreasonable Behaviour. If you have not committed adultery and you have not yet been separated for 2 years, the only fact that can be used in support of the petition is that of Unreasonable Behaviour. 7. DO contest costs if an unreasonable application for costs has been made against you. The Judge will often limit the costs order to half of the costs if reasonable representations are made. 8. DO NOT hire a hit man if the Petitioner ticks the financial boxes at the end of the petition. It is standard practice and does not mean that any of those financial claims will be made, it simply keeps all options open.

Pets Corner
Piles of Presents - And Pounds! Our pets don’t hibernate so here’s how to keep them svelte over the holiday season We all love to celebrate over Christmas and New Year. It’s a time to indulge and relax but when it comes to our pets we need to stick to the rules because holiday weight is difficult to shift and it can damage their health.
Lock Away Chocolate Christmas brings out the sweet tooth in us all. Who doesn’t buy at least two tins of Roses? The problem is that large quantities of chocolate are poisonous for dogs, and smaller doses increase their weight. Lock chocolate away and be careful about what is stashed under or on the tree because a bored dog is likely to investigate.
“Don’t forget to exercise caged pets. Gerbils can run in an empty bath and a rabbit can stretch those running legs on the landing.” Keep Exercising Despite The Cold
Visitors Under Order! You know not to feed your pets rubbish, but make sure visitors know too. Don’t leave children with pets and treat foods, because they just can’t resist puppy dog eyes. Cats love the Christmas cheese but keep granny under control because it’s very difficult to diet a cat.
Yes it’s cold and you’re busy, but your pet still needs exercise. Dog still need a daily walk even on Christmas Day. Without it you face behavioural issues, and coupled with inappropriate treats, you’re in for double trouble! If it’s uncomfortably dark and cold consider a warm coat for your dog or some safe reflective clothing. Don’t forget to exercise caged pets. Gerbils can run in an empty bath and a rabbit can stretch those running legs on the landing. It’ll help to burn off any chocolate
covered M&Ms that have been innocently pushed through the cage bars.
Give Them Pet Treats Take a look at our pet treats in store. They’re specifically made for dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, birds or other caged pets. Some are low in fat; others help with fur-balls, coat condition and smelly breath!
Don’t Give Human Food The Christmas turkey will have stuffing with onion and leeks which are toxic for dogs and cats. It may cause an upset stomach and destroy your day, never mind your carpet!
Here’s What You Can Give Them: • • • • •
Pet treats in recommended amounts Stuffing-free turkey that’s been skinned, de-boned and had all fat removed Fish - cats and dogs love mackerel fillets. Yogurts - a small amount of plain yogurt is loved by most animals Ditch the cream; get some lactose-free cat milk.

The golden rule is to follow a normal diet with occasional treats. Spoil your pets this Christmas but not with lots of food or you’ll have to put them on a New Year’s slimming diet! Have a Happy Christmas and an exciting 2016.

New College Stamford New College Stamford’s talented Art and Design students have been raising awareness of food waste in their latest exhibition at Stamford Arts Centre. The annual exhibition is part of ‘The One World Week’ with this year’s theme ‘LIVING DIFFERENTLY: Breaking chains – making change!’ The array of students work reflected the need to make changes in our lifestyles to secure a fairer, more satisfying, resourceful life for us all to protect the planet for future generations. The exhibition showcased a range of artwork that students have been refining throughout their course at New College Stamford including paintings, sculptures, etchings and graphics. Each responding to how they would choose to ‘LIVE DIFFERENTLY’ and make a change together. Students touched on subjects such as poverty, world hunger and consumerism.
Open to the public, the event attracted a large number of local visitors and art enthusiasts, giving Art and Design students the opportunity to gain honest feedback from the public. Tom Coulthard, Lecturer of Art and Design said, “the students have an excellent reputation for putting on captivating exhibitions, and as such they are always well attended. This gives students a excellent opportunity to gain feedback towards the development of their creative portfolios.” New College Stamford’s Art and Design courses are an attractive alternative to A Levels. Students will experience a range of briefs and showcase art in real life exhibitions locally and nationally, developing their portfolio with a 100% coursework based qualification sought after by England’s top Art Universities.
University Academy Holbeach UAH students have just returned from an exciting historical, geographical and cultural trip to the West Coast of the USA. Twenty students from Years 9 to Year 13 were accompanied by five members of staff. The trip ran from Wednesday 21st October to Wednesday 28th October. The trip had been planned for a year and helped support units from the GCSE and A Level Geography curriculum. The tour was a great success with students visiting numerous famous landmarks including the Hoover Dam, Death Valley, Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. Students were also able to take in the exciting atmosphere of Los Angeles and visited places including the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Beverly Hills. The party toured the west coast and stayed in four different locations including Los Angeles and Page. Staff and students all agreed that this was a trip of a lifetime and something that they will always remember. 18 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Caring for the Elderly
Caring for the Elderly We all want the best for our loved ones. When a friend or relative isn’t coping so well any more then it is time they consider their options
E
verybody values their independence. Being able to do what you want, when you want is an important part of everyday life. As we get older things can happen which affect that independence. A decline in health, both physical and mental can sometimes mean that we can’t get around or do household chores the way we used to. These changes can happen gradually but over time can have a huge impact. If you have a relative who looks as if they are struggling then you can help them to assess their options. If day-to-day living is the issue then a good option is a care home. These are residential homes which provide meals and help with things such as getting washed and dressed and other help where necessary. An ensuite room is the usual accommodation and meals are provided. Your relative can maintain their independence with help available to them where necessary. Should it be a decline in health that has prompted the move (either physically or mentally) then a nursing home should be explored. As well as providing the services you would expect from a care home, nursing homes are also able to provide medical care with specially trained staff and a qualified nurse. If there is a specific mental condition such as Alzheimers there are nursing homes and care homes which specialise in providing care for these conditions so it is worth finding out what care is available. If your relative is well but struggles with the housework then looking at some home help could be the solution. There are agencies which can pop in throughout the day to help with any jobs which are proving too difficult such as cleaning, preparing meals, laundry and shopping. These agencies can also provide help to ensure that prescriptions are collected and are taken correctly. For relatives who are desperate to remain in their homes this can be a good option. Finally, if you have the room and facilities at home, could your relative move in with you? Much as they

cared for you when you were young are you able to now return the favour now they need some assistance? This isn’t always recommended if there are serious health issues but it can be a neat solution. If the space does not permit and your relative lives in a large house then downsizing should be investigated, especially if a move from a house to a bungalow can be made. In our area the average weekly cost for residential care is £555 and nursing care is £655 so cost can play a huge part in your decision making process. There are lots of funding options available from self-funding through to local authority funding and NHS funding so it really isn’t a small decision. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Glam Up For Christmas
Getting Ready in a Hurry Last minute plans can lead to the best nights out but if time isn’t on your side how do you ensure you turn up looking party-ready?
F
or many reasons December is party season, with Christmas parties starting at the beginning of the month and ending with New Year’s Eve on the 31st. Sometimes you will end up staying late at work to get everything finished and find yourself short on time to get ready to go out. Other times it might be a last minute invite that you just can’t turn down! Either way you’ve precious little time but want to look your best. There are a few little tricks to save you precious minutes. Start with clothing selection. It is often said that a little black dress can be a lifesaver as it can be used for any occasion and this is very true in this instance. If your dress is black then your

How to do a TOPKNOT 1) Pull your hair back into a high ponytail. Get it as high as you can and tie with a bobble. 2) Divide the ponytail into two parts and wind each part around the other, starting closest to the bobble. Move in a circular shape and wind the hair completely around the bobble. 3) Secure the knot with hairpins in much the same way as you would secure a bun. 4) Add hairspray for any flyaway ends to keep it neat.
shoes and accessories can be any colour you like. You won’t have to spend a lot of time thinking about whether your dress and shoes are going to look good together. When you are in the bathroom use an inshower moisturiser to save time. Rather than having to shower, dry and then moisturise you can get the same results by using an in-shower alternative. When it comes to applying your make up, choose a good BB Cream and not only will this save you time when you are rushing to get ready but it will save you time in general. Many brands offer their own versions of BB Creams which act as a good all-rounder. It can be used as a primer or a tinted moisturiser, giving a light coverage so you can use it instead of your foundation. If nothing else it is a good pick-me-up for a tired complexion so you can head out of the door looking refreshed! You can even use one item of make-up for your whole look, for example a cream blush will look just as good on your eyes and lips as it does on your cheeks. When you come to do your hair make sure you don’t choose a style that will take up all of your time. There are many styles which take very little time but will leave you looking party-ready such as a messy bun, top knot or half up / half down wavy styles. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Boxing Day Recipes
Boxing Day Recipes After all that cooking on Christmas Day, grab the chance to relax on Boxing Day with these lazy recipes ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Trifle Cake
Small Panettone 800ml whipped cream Zest of 1 orange 2tbsp caster sugar 1 punnet strawberries 1 punnet raspberries Toasted almond flakes to decorate For the syrup: Grated zest of 1 orange Juice of 2 oranges 3tbsp caster sugar 2tbsp Grand Marnier or Cointreau
Begin by making the syrup. Combine the zest, juice and sugar in a pan and bring to the boil, stirring as you go to make sure all of the sugar is dissolved. Simmer for one minute and then leave to cool. Stir in the alcohol. Remove the paper from the panettone, trim off the top and discard. Cut the panettone into 3 or 4 rounds. Drizzle the syrup onto each of the rounds. Beat the cream, orange zest
and caster sugar together until it forms soft peaks. Place one of the rounds on a plate and cover with a layer of whipped cream. Top with raspberries and strawberries. Repeat with the remaining rounds. When the panettone is rebuilt brush with any remaining syrup. Cover the entire cake with cream and top with any remaining raspberries, strawberries and the toasted almonds. Serve immediately.
Leftovers Bubble and Squeak
Any leftover meat, chopped Left over vegetables Left over boiled and roast potatoes 2tbsp olive oil Heat the meat in a pan. Crush the pota toes and add them to the pan. Add the vegetables. Add the olive oil and fry. Serve and enjoy that feeling of having actu ally used some of your leftovers!
Glazed Ham
5kg leg of gammon 150ml apple juice 2 cinnamon sticks 2 star anise 10 whole peppercorns 6 cloves, 4 bay leaves
Zest from 1 orange For the glaze: 250ml maple syrup 50ml apple juice 1tsp ground cinnamon 1tsp ground ginger 2tbsp wholegrain mustard
Heat the oven to 150°. Place the ham into a tin and pour in the apple juice. Top up with 500ml water. Add the spices, bay leaves and orange zest. Cover with tin foil and bake in the oven for around five hours. While the ham is baking mix together the ingredients for the glaze in a saucepan and bubble until reduced to a sticky glaze. Remove the ham from the oven and increase the temperature to 190°. Peel away the rind, leaving a thin layer of fat attached to the meat. Place into a roasting tray, fat side up. Score the fat in a criss-cross pattern and bake again until the fat crisps. Brush the glaze over the ham and return to the oven for 25 minutes. When baked decorate with the star anise and bay leaves and serve. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Winter Motoring
Getting your car ready for winter driving Keeping you safe over the coldest months
I
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
f there is a problem with your car in summer it is far easier to be patient by the roadside while the sun shines down on you. In the cold and miserable weather though conditions can make it far more dangerous. There are a few simple things you can do to try and avoid any problems. Antifreeze. Check your coolant levels regularly and top up if required. If you are not too confident doing this then a local garage will be able to do it quickly for you. Check the battery. This is important for older cars as the older a battery gets the more it struggles in the cold. If you are in any doubt over your battery then get it replaced before the temperature drops. Tyres. Your tyres should have at least 3mm of tread. If you live in a rural area then consider winter tyres or even snow chains. As well as the tread make sure you regularly check the tyre pressure. Windscreen Wipers. Windscreens can become very dirty in the winter, make sure your wiper blades are in good condition.
“In case of a breakdown take a blanket so you can keep yourself warm.”
Windscreen Wash. The low sun in winter can give a real glare and a dirty windscreen can result in you being dazzled so make sure your windscreen is always clean and use a good quality screen wash as it is less likely to freeze during frosty weather. Fuel. Make sure that where possible you have enough fuel to get to and from your destination plus extra for traffic delays to ensure you never run out of fuel. The Right Equipment. There are items you can take which will help you in the event of an emergency. First and foremost if you have breakdown cover then have the details with you. Take a fully charged mobile phone so you can contact them if necessary. In case of a breakdown take a blanket so you can keep yourself warm. In case of snow a shovel, salt, an ice scraper and a piece of old carpet for traction can be helpful. Extra screen wash is also handy as you go through more in the winter than you do in the summer. Not being able to clean your windscreen can be very dangerous. And year-round, make sure you have jumper cables.
How to jump-start a car If your battery dies then a jump start can quickly have you back on your way. Knowing how to use your cables properly is very important though. Here’s how it’s done: 1) Park both cars in neutral and switch off the engines. Make sure that the cars are parked closely enough that the cables can comfortably reach each vehicle. 2) Connect the first end of the red positive lead to the positive terminal on the working battery (usually denoted by a “+” sign). Do the same for the other end of the lead for the flat battery.
28 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
3) Connect the black negative lead to the negative terminal on the working battery (usually denoted by a “-“ sign). Attach the other end to a metal point away from the dead battery. 4) Check the leads are away from any moving parts and
then start the engine of the working car. 5) After a minute try starting the car with the dead battery. 6) Once you have your car running leave the engine on for a couple of minutes to charge the battery. 7) Remove the jump leads
in reverse order to the way you attached them. Make sure they don’t touch each other or any metal surfaces. 8) Drive for at least 30 minutes to give the battery ample opportunity to charge. 9) If you cannot start the engine then you will need to get in touch with your breakdown cover provider as there may be a bigger problem with your car.

Wills
The Importance of Writing a Will It’s not something we often think about. After all, nobody likes to think of a time when they are not here. However, a little preparation now can save an awful lot of hassle in the future “If there are no surviving relatives then your estate will pass to the Crown. If that wouldn’t be your wish for your things then now is the time to get a Will written.”
E
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
ven if you don’t have a Will the chances are you will be familiar with what a Will is. For those who have never heard of one, a Will is a legal document which comes into effect upon the occasion of your death containing your wishes for the distribution of your estate and all of your assets (that is, your house and your belongings). Whilst it might seem a lot of trouble to go through while you are young, fit and healthy if you die without a will then your estate is shared out according to the rules of intestacy. If you die without a will then your spouse or civil partner will inherit. If you are not married to your partner, however, then there is no claim. Partners who are separated but not legally divorced will inherit though. Children of the intestate person will inherit only if there is no surviving married partner. In this case they will only inherit a proportion of the estate if the value is over £250,000. When you die without a will the following people will have no claim to inherit: Unmarried partners or gay or lesbian partners not in civil partnership Relations by marriage Close Friends and Carers If there are no surviving relatives then your estate will pass to the Crown. If that wouldn’t be your wish for your things then now is the time to get a Will written. When writing a Will the best place to start is by making a list of all of your assets, that is the things you own. On this list you will need to include property (not just your home but any other property you might own, both here and overseas), vehicles, savings, bonds and shares and possessions (jewellery, antiques etc). Once you have your list, to put it bluntly it’s time to decide who gets what! It is your opportunity to leave
30 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
things of sentimental value to people you know will cherish them as well as any gifts of money to friends and relatives, not just the largest, most valuable items. You should also include details of your wishes regarding your funeral, particularly whether you want to be buried or cremated. If you have children under 18 you will need to name the people who you would like to be their guardian. Also name your executors, that is, the people who are going to carry out all of this for you. Make sure they are happy to do so before you name them! You can keep your Will safely at home or at a bank or with a solicitor (make sure your executors know where the Will is kept). For your will to be legally valid you must ensure that: You are 18 years old or over Make it voluntarily, of your own free will Be of sound mind Make it in writing Sign it in the presence of two witnesses who must also be 18 years old or over Have it signed by your two witnesses in your presence. Be aware that you cannot leave your witnesses or their married partners anything in your Will.

ake the earthy Subaru XV, for example. On sale since 2012, the car stands out by benefiting from permanent all-wheel-drive as standard. It also boasts the highest ground clearance and is among the lightest vehicles in its class, aiding its genuine off-road ability, while a low centre of gravity enhances on-road handling. Recently, changes to the XV’s suspension have resulted in a smoother, more compliant ride but without sacrificing any of the stability that the XV is renowned for. However, among the most important improvements is a revised cabin, which now features better-quality materials and an all-new touchscreen infotainment and navigation system. The 7.0inch touchscreen display allows smartphone-style control, with a swipe and pinch function for map displays. The screen echoes the new blue glow of the driver’s instrument binnacle which has been completely redesigned with new graphics. The overall result of these alterations is a more contemporary and cosseting ambience. Indeed, the XV comes loaded up with a kit list to rival some

Subaru continues to pull its weight in many areas – particularly in the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and crossover segments
premium motor manufacturers. The infotainment system and other vehicle functions can be controlled through Subaru’s latest-generation voice control facility. This allows you to keep your eyes on the road ahead while selecting a favourite radio station, setting a new satellite navigation destination or changing the temperature of the climate control system. The infotainment system also now houses a standardfit rear view camera, offering a crystal clear wide 160-degree field of view behind the car when reversing. The XV receives an extra USB jack too, allowing you to listen to music from one USB-compatible device while charging another at the same time. The centre-console cup holders have also been re-designed and now feature a sliding cover. In addition, you can expect to find traction control, front, side, curtain and knee airbags, 17-inch alloy wheels, and daytime LED running lights. Furthermore, noise from inside the cabin has been reduced, thanks to more sound-absorbent material being placed throughout the car. This does well in cutting the intrusion of engine, wind and road racket into the cabin. The XV’s underbody cover has also been reshaped to reduce wind noise around the
rear of the Subaru, while thicker glass for the front side windows and front quarter lights further reduces wind roar. The XV is therefore a hushed vehicle to drive - and a lively one, too. A decent electronic power steering system helps the drive by giving good stability and feel. There’s a nice weight about the steering too, giving you the confidence to manoeuvre swiftly and precisely. My diesel powered XV 2.0 SE Premium press car came with Subaru’s sixspeed manual transmission. The gear change is smooth and accurate, although the clutch is a bit heavy. Into the bargain, safety has been improved, with reinforcements around the base of the pillars that hold either side of the Subaru’s windscreen in place. This yields further improvements in the XV’s Euro NCAP five-star crash safety performance. In fact, the model has another ace up its sleeve: with a score of 90 per cent, it has one of the highest marks in the industry for child protection. So, if crossovers do it for you, this could be one to think about. Some cheap-looking cabin plastics are still noticeable here and there, but the XV is a sound choice if you’re keen to keep your family in safe hands.
