have a little one! This issue we look at the Deepings Raft Race. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever before and there’s still time to enter so why not get a few people together to make a team and help to raise money for some really good causes? You can find all the details you need at www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk. If you do decide to go for it then let us know and we’ll give you an extra big cheer at the finish line!! Elsewhere in the issue we look at homes from the outside. Often referred to as kerb appeal it is amazing how much effort can go into making the exterior of a house look fabulous. Soffits and fascias, guttering, double glazing, fencing, the list goes on! If you fancy a bit of an external refresh then we might just be able to get you underway! Finally, with the summer holidays on the horizon we have the first of a two part feature concerned with keeping the children entertained during their time off. This issue we are keeping it local with days out not too far from home and in the August issue we are planning on looking a little further afield. Enjoy the issue!

Queensgate’s Eco Travel Plan Wins Silver Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough is being celebrated for its environmental achievements this year, having received Silver at the Travel Plan Awards 2015 and being recognised as a Retail Recycling Champion at the 2015 Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management. The Travelchoice judges were pleased with Queensgate’s latest Travel Plan, its objectives and initiatives encourage the whole organisation to act in a more environmentally friendly way. The Travel Plan is an integral part of Queensgate’s measures to minimise any negative effects the shopping centre may have on both the environment and the local community. It has been in place for a number of years and its key purpose is to increase awareness of alternative methods of travel to work among all that work at Queensgate.
Chris Hanley, Senior Technical Leader for Transportation at Atkins, working closely with Peterborough City Council’s Travelchoice team, said: “The Queensgate Shopping Centre’s Silver Award at the recent Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Travel Plan Awards is a reflection of the hard work that Carol Wakelin and her team have put in to supporting the work of Travelchoice over the last year. Queensgate have delivered a number of sustainable travel initiatives including the provision of electric vehicle charging points, supported the roll out of an engagement survey with retailers and delivery of personalised journey plans to a number of staff. Travelchoice will continue to work in partnership with Queensgate next year to promote a greater number of sustainable travel options to staff and customers visiting the centre.”
Eye Care Centre Celebrates 25 Years Spalding opticians The Eye Care Centre are celebrating their 25th anniversary in July and are planning celebrations to mark the occasion. Reflecting over the last quarter of a century Sue Brocklesby, dispensing optician, has seen many changes since she joined the company back in 1997, “One of the biggest changes we’ve seen is availability, especially the wide ranges of lenses. There have been advances in leaps and bounds when it comes
to UV protection as well, we have a much better understanding now of the need to protect the eyes from UV radiation. Wearing specs is much more acceptable now than it used to be and that has been helped in part by the designer 6available Sheep Market, ranges such as Ted Baker, Barbour,Spald Joules and Valentino.” Anybody attending a sight test at The Eye Care Centre in July will receive a goody bag and a promotional voucher. To book your sight test call 01775 722141.

Vandalised play area cleaned up A privately built children’s play area full of damaged and vandalised equipment, and strewn with rusty nails, broken fence posts and fly-tipped rubbish, has been cleaned up and made safe thanks to South Holland District Council’s successful Pride in South Holland campaign. South Holland District Council acted swiftly following complaints from residents about the state of a private play area in Crocus Walk, Spalding. Environmental Services made contact with The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) who reported back confirming that the play area was unsafe and recommended removal. The owners of the play area, Bostonbased Lincolnshire Developments Limited, were contacted by our Environmental Health team and attempts made to resolve the issue without taking formal action under Health & Safety laws. Regrettably Lincolnshire
Developments failed to respond to all approaches. The company was then served with a legal notice forcing them to either remove or make good the playground and equipment or face prosecution. Lincolnshire Developments then removed the play equipment and returned the area to green space during April. “Great work cleaning up the Crocus Lane play area, it was a right mess,” was the response of one local resident to the council’s actions. Malcolm Chandler, portfolio holder for Health and Safety, said: “This is a great example of how council services are working together deliver results for the people of South Holland. “This play area was in a dreadful and dangerous state, and it is fortunate that nobody was injured using it. “I am proud of our services which have delivered this result and pleased to see The Pride in South Holland campaign continuing to make progress for local communities. I look forward to seeing this continue over the coming months.” The Pride in South Holland campaign was launched last year to clean up eyesore sites across the district. Highlights so far include a clean-up of the former Bull and Monkie pub site in Spalding and removal of more than 200 tonnes of rubbish and fly-tipped waste across the district.

Homes nominated for awards Three recently-built housing developments which were constructed by South Holland District Council have been nominated for prestigious awards. Homes in Wrights Lane in Sutton Bridge, Stonegate in Cowbit and Millfield Gardens in Crowland are in the running to win accolades in this year’s Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence Awards for the East Midlands. The homes, which were all built recently and rented to tenants, have each been nominated in the best small new housing and best social or affordable housing categories. The awards ceremony takes place at the East Midlands Conference Centre in Nottingham on July 3 and regional winners will be automatically shortlisted for the LABC Grand Finals held in London in the autumn. Christine Lawton, portfolio holder for housing landlord, said: “We are very proud to have been nominated for these awards and hopefully we will be celebrating on July 3rd. The nominations are testament to the dedicated work of our housing team and their commitment to providing quality rented accommodation for people in South

Successful Second Year for Healthwatch Lincolnshire
Healthwatch Lincolnshire has just completed its second successful year since starting work in April 2013, as the independent local organisation giving everyone a chance to speak up about their health and social care services. During the year they have spent time listening and learning with over 11,000 Lincolnshire residents about their experiences of health and care services in the county. By sharing the individual concerns and bigger themes with the organisations that pay and provide these
services, they have helped to influence improvements to many services, as well as highlighted any gaps and where the bigger changes are required. Chief Executive Officer of Healthwatch Lincolnshire, Sarah Fletcher, said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us during the last year”. Anyone wanting to find out about the work of Healthwatch Lincolnshire can read more on our website www. healthwatchlincolnshire.co.uk

Extra care housing prioritised The delivery of specialist housing for people with care needs has been adopted as a key priority for South Holland District Council. Extra Care Housing is accommodation where care and support is provided onsite 24 hours a day in a communal setting yet residents retain a degree of independence over their own lives. It is usually provided within complexes of between 40 and 60 units of selfcontained accommodation. Extra care housing schemes are often available across a range of tenures, from affordable rented and shared ownership through to market sale. South Holland has been identified as a priority area for Extra Care Housing due to the area’s demographics and lack of existing supply. Recently councillors unanimously approved the decision to make the delivery of Extra Care Housing a priority and work is now underway to identify
opportunities to make the vision a reality. Cllr Christine Lawton, portfolio holder for housing, said: “We are acting now to meet the demands and needs of an ageing population and increase the choice available in the local housing market to those who wish to remain in specialist accommodation whilst receiving care.” The 2011 Census identified that around 27% of the district’s population is of pensionable age, compared with 18% nationally. Government population projections predict that there will be a 51% increase in the population of those aged 55 or over by 2036 and that over the same period, the population of those aged 85 or older will increase by 175%. At the same time dementia rates in South Holland are anticipated to rise by 109%, along with an 88% rise in the number of people expected to suffer with mobility problems.

After a little break for the elections I am delighted to be back writing my regular monthly article for Simply Spalding. While out campaigning I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who told me they read my articles in Simply Spalding, so it is clearly a good way of keeping you all informed of what is going on in South Holland. Firstly, however, I would like to take the opportunity to say a big thank you to all those who voted for me in the Hurn Ward and whether you did or didn’t I am here to represent you and put forward your issues to South Holland District Council and to try to resolve them, wherever possible. Whatever your political persuasion I am one of 37 councillors whose aim will be to make South Holland a great place to live and work, increasing prosperity and well-being, while protecting and enhancing our unique environment. I am delighted to be continuing a twelve year partnership with the Leader, Gary Porter, as his Deputy and will also be the lead member for Economic Development, bringing in inward investment, jobs and new skills into the District. We have several new and younger members and some not so young but more experienced and I do believe we have a really good mix, now representing three political parties, so I expect some robust challenge over the coming months, which is really good for democracy. Our priorities are to develop safer, stronger, healthier and more independent communities, to have pride in South Holland, to provide the right services at the right time and in the right way and to encourage the local economy to be vibrant with continued growth. To ensure this happens a new cabinet has been chosen by the Leader, with each member having responsibility for delivering an element of those priorities that are in our corporate plan
and that were part of our manifesto commitments. There will be some major challenges facing the council, mainly around the reducing financial settlement from central government, which will mean, if we are to protect our services, we will have to continue to find different but more efficient ways of delivering them. There has been much talk from the County Council about Unitary Authorities (one or two for the whole county, effectively doing away with the current District and County Council and starting with a single new authority). However the likelihood of this happening is virtually nil as all the Districts in the County would have to agree to do that and most, clearly do not want to. What we may however end up with is a combined authority with Districts, County, Blue Light Services, Health all working together and maybe across traditional borders as well, to deliver services more effectively and efficiently. There is a clearly a lot of work to be done on this and deals to be struck, but the foot is on the pedal and something has to give, so watch this space! Finally a plug for the Holbeach Food Festival on Saturday July 4th, 10am – 4pm to be held in the beautiful grounds of William Stukeley C of E Primary School, Spalding Road, Holbeach. Local Food, Local Culture, Local Music. See you there!

Simply Property
Does there always have to be a compromise when buying a new home?
W
❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND, SIMPLY PROPERTY
hen it comes to buying a home it can feel like there is always a compromise along the way, a property may not tick every box on you “must have” list, or your partner’s ideas of the perfect property may differ somewhat to yours. When house hunting it’s best to begin with a checklist of what matters to you the most. Think about the following: • Number of Bedrooms • Number of Bathrooms • Number of Reception Rooms • Outside Space • Garage/Off Road Parking • Property Condition • Location Then highlight the things that are nonnegotiable – usually minimum bedrooms and location. But always think outside the box, if you could get a property at a good price, it may not have the bedrooms you need but you could make plans and be a savvy investor, extending to get the home you are looking for and make some money along the way. Always be mindful of what the rest of the family are looking for from the home too – whether that’s a growing family, your partner’s hobbies or having an enclosed space to let the dog out.
Why are you moving? If you are selling your current home and upsizing or downsizing it’s important to keep your eyes on the prize when viewing properties. That is, keep in mind your motivation for moving, be it more space, releasing equity or moving to a new area. In any move there are some requirements that are fixed and some that are flexible. From experience, the people who find moving the least stressful are those who are as flexible as possible on their wish list – it means it opens up more properties to them and also ensures that they look at options that if they were very strict in their requirements they wouldn’t even consider.
without breaking the bank, so what you first see doesn’t always have to be what you end up with. First impressions of a home are important, but so is trying to see past the fixtures, the furniture and colour on the walls. Furniture you would never pick out yourself and other decor like wallpaper and carpet that can easily be replaced. If cosmetic flaws are the only thing you can find wrong with a home, then you may have actually discovered a gem just waiting for you to put your individual stamp on. The other thing to think about is your furniture. Unless it’s a family heirloom, then furniture can be replaced. The number of times we hear potential purchasers ruling out their dream home because a sofa they have had for 10 years won’t fit is crazy! Take the opportunity to have a change and new look.
See Past the Décor There are many ways to spruce up a property

Advice
Sex discrimination and sexual harassment at work ❱ BY LISA BARWELL It is against the law for someone you work for to treat you unfairly because of your sex (or gender). This is called sex discrimination. The law on sex discrimination at work applies to both men and women.
All workers are protected by the law on sex discrimination, including: • people who are applying for a job • apprentices and people on work experience • self-employed people who have a contract to provide a service • contract and agency workers • part-time workers. Sex discrimination can be direct or indirect, harassment or victimisation. Direct discrimination is where your employer treats you less favourably than someone else who works for them because of your sex. Indirect discrimination is where your employer has a rule, policy or practice, which though not aimed at you personally, puts you at a disadvantage because of your sex.
When could sex discrimination occur Common situations at work when you could experience sex discrimination include: • when you are applying for promotion • unfair access to training and development opportunities, or other benefits • decisions about who is chosen for redundancy • not allowing you to work flexibly to care for a child or relative.
Discrimination if you have caring responsibilities If you’re treated worse than other workers because you’re a carer this could be direct sex discrimination. If your employer imposes rules that put you at a disadvantage because of your caring responsibilities, this could be indirect discrimination. Indirect discrimination includes things such as refusing to let you start work late so you can take children to school or nursery, or not allowing you to come back to work part time after you’ve been on maternity leave. You could also be indirectly discriminated against if you look after an elderly or disabled person and aren’t allowed to make changes to your working day to look after them.
Sexual harassment at work You are protected by law against sexual harassment at work. This includes both men and women. It also includes people who are undergoing, have undergone or who are intending to undergo gender reassignment. Sexual harassment could include: • unwelcome comments of a sexual nature • unnecessary touching or unwanted physical contact • leering at someone’s body • displaying offensive material such as posters • sending offensive e-mails. This includes colleagues downloading pornographic e-mails, even if they aren’t sent to you personally. The law protects you against sexual harassment from your employer, colleagues. Sexual harassment could be
a one-off incident or a series of incidents. It could be sexual harassment if you are working in an environment which the behaviour of others makes intimidating, hostile, degrading, humiliating or offensive. Sexual harassment might be deliberate or nasty but it doesn’t have to be. Someone could be sexually harassing you, even if they don’t mean to, or don’t realise they are doing it. This doesn’t mean that it isn’t wrong or that you shouldn’t complain about it.
What can I do about sex discrimination or sexual harassment? If you’re experiencing sex discrimination or sexual harassment at work, take action as quickly as possible. If you are being sexually harassed, tell the person to stop. Only do this if you feel it is safe. You may find it helpful to have a colleague or trade union representative with you when you do this. • tell your manager what is happening. Put it in writing and keep a copy. Your employer is required by law to protect you from sex discrimination and sexual harassment. If it is your manager who is discriminating against you or harassing you, tell someone higher up in the organisation • talk to your personnel department or trade union. They might be able to help you stop the discrimination or harassment. • get advice. A Citizens Advice Bureau may be able to help or refer you to a specialist.

Kirkstone House It is with pleasure that Kirkstone House have welcomed a new Director of Studies, Karen Smith, into their Junior School. Karen will also hold the post of Deputy Head of the school working closely with Corinne Jones, Headmistress. Mrs Smith brings a wealth of experience to her role having previously taught in the Midlands, London and Lincolnshire. She has previously worked as a leading Literacy teacher, an advisor for Lincolnshire and a Deputy Head. Mrs Smith says, ‘I am extremely excited to be taking up this role. Kirkstone is a school that truly offers an individualised, tailor
made education for pupils at every level. I am fortunate to be working with a caring and dedicated team of professionals. Graded ‘Excellent’ in their last Inspection Report,
Wisbech Grammar School
Kirkstone House has very exciting times ahead. Corinne Jones welcomed Mrs Smith to the team saying that, ‘Karen will make a fantastic contribution to our team’.
Spalding Grammar School On Sunday 3rd May, a group of 12 Spalding Grammar School staff led by Mr Knowles, ran the Langtoft 10K to raise money for Bowel Cancer Research in memory of late teacher, Sam Walker. Mr Knowles planned to run the 10k whilst Sam was undergoing treatment, and following the sad news of his death earlier this year was, in his own words was, “Even more committed to the idea of raising money for Bowel Cancer UK by a number of us running a 10k together, in memory of Sam.” Thanks to the community’s support and kind donations, the group raised over £1300 for Bowel Cancer Research which is above and beyond the £1000 target they were 45% short of just two days prior to the run! The runners joined their supporters for a picnic following the run and celebrated their success! Well done to them all!

A gifted mathematician at Wisbech Grammar School has qualified to be counted amongst a select number of the nation’s best young problem solvers. Elliot Young (16) won a place in the Intermediate Maths Olympiad and was then awarded a medal for finishing in the top 100 in his fifth form year group in the whole country, after taking the best in school title with a gold award in the Intermediate Maths Challenge in February. Head of mathematics Mr Geoff Howes said: “To be placed in the top 100 mathematicians in his year group is both a great honour for Elliot and for the school. He has worked extremely hard to reach this level and this is a great inspiration for the other pupils. This also means that Elliot has a very strong statement about his ability when he comes to complete his application for university in a year’s time.”

Considering a Puppy or Kitten? Nothing has more ‘awww’ factor than a litter of pups or kittens. With their big eyes, playful games, and tiny tails, few can resist picking one up for a cuddle Although they are endlessly cute, they are a lot of hard work and there are some important points to consider before you dash out to pick up your new friend. Puppies It sounds obvious, but small puppies can grow into big dogs; so it important to think about how large your friend will get when he’s fully grown. Choose a breed that suits your lifestyle. Small dogs don’t necessarily need less exercise than larger dogs, so read up on the breed traits before you choose. Home Comforts Your pup will need a bed of his own. Come and talk to us about the best choice for you; the choices are varied and it’s worth considering your options. He will also need a puppy collar that doesn’t slip off and a suitable lead for when you venture outside. Food Your breeder should tell you what he’s been eating; and even send you away with a few days’ supply. If you plan to swap his food, come in store to get some advice. We can discuss the best food for you and your pup and explain how to make the transition. Pups need food little and often; they only have tiny tums. So make sure you don’t over-feed them, especially when it comes to treats - overweight pets have a host of expensive medical issues! Health Treatment Puppies need specific flea, tick and worm control. Make sure his vaccinations are also up-to-date and try to avoid taking him outdoors until his course is complete. Kittens Thoroughly naughty in every way, kittens are great fun to be around because they
think they are fearless lions on the Serengeti plains. Here are some considerations for your young ‘Tiddles’. Bedding Put cosy bedding in a place that’s accessible to your kitten, but away from children and other pets. Kittens need their space to escape. Food It’s best to continue with your kitten’s current diet to avoid an upset tummy. Change it gradually if you want to feed them something different. Kittens can’t tolerate cow’s milk, so try specific kitten milk instead, although once weaned from mum they don’t need it as part of their diet. If in doubt, pop in store and get some advice; we’re always happy to help. Health Treatment Flea, tick, and worm control is very important. If a kitten is overrun with fleas she may become anaemic and need urgent vet treatment. A female kitten can breed from the age of 4 months, so make neutering a priority.

It is a common misconception that siblings won’t mate; they will. So ensure you have a neutering appointment planned in advance. Rescue Pups and Kittens There are many puppies and kittens in rescue care. These pre-loved pets are homeless through no fault of their own. Before dashing out to the breeder of your choice, consider whether you could offer one a secondchance-home. However, beware of private advertisements online - they may be farms that unscrupulously breed for profit. Make sure that your new friend is microchipped too. You can have it done at your vets, or Dogs Trust occasionally run free microchipping events for dogs at various locations. This simple procedure is not only important, but it will soon be the law. Finally - remember to enjoy your bundle of pet joy; they aren’t little forever. They grow and learn rapidly, so set training and rules in place from the first night home. You’ll have good days and bad days, but with the right planning and preparation, it will all be part of the adorable adventure!

Summer Days Out
Keeping busy in the Summer Holidays There can be lots of time to fill during the summer holidays so we lend a helping hand with a few ideas for attractions
C
ome rain or shine there are several weeks between July and the beginning of September when the children will be demanding to be entertained! Whether you are an indoors type family or prefer to be out taking advantage of the fresh air there is plenty in the area to keep all ages busy. Indoors When the rain comes (and it will!) finding something to do which is indoors can help stave off the boredom. You could try bowling at Alleykatz – they have small bowling balls especially for children as well as bumpers which can be readily raised so that the children don’t have ten frames of gutter ball! For the older children there is also pool, air hockey and an arcade to enjoy. For younger ones the Fun Farm at Weston and Play Barn at Springfields are excellent places to take the children to get rid of any excess energy and really wear themselves out! It’s a good excuse for a group of you to have a get together and let the kids run wild! If you children are arty then Doodles Pottery Painting in Spalding may have the answer, especially if you are not a fan of messy play at home! Taking some time out to create something beautiful to keep is a great way to spend an afternoon. Another great group activity is the Scalextric Racing at Low Fulney where you can all get together to find out who is the best racer! Outdoors If you haven’t already done so then a trip on the Spalding Water Taxi is a real treat, especially on a beautiful day. A scenic 30 minute cruise from the town centre to Springfields (or, of course the reverse) it’s a great way to view the town from a new perspective. If you love nature then Gooderstone Water Gardens is a great day out. Located near Swaffham

you can take your time to fully explore the six acres of gardens and all they have to offer. There is also a nature trail to follow. Moulton Mill is the tallest windmill in the country. Guided tours are available and afterwards you can take advantage of the tearoom! If you are visiting the beautiful Ayscoughfee Gardens make sure you take the time to pop in to the museum as well! There are many exhibitions and concerts happening in the gardens and the hall over the summer holidays so pay a visit and pick up a timetable. If you love animals then Pigeons Farm is for you. As well as a large play area you can see guinea fowl, peacocks, ornamental pheasants, chickens and bantams, cattle (including Dexters and Belted Galloways), sheep, goats, donkeys, pigs, mini Shetland ponies, large horses, rabbits and guinea pigs. If you are feeling really energetic then head over to Peterborough to Battlefield Live. Fun for ages 7 and up it is described as “team oriented combat” (not paintball) in the great outdoors it operates in all weathers and at just £15 per person for a two hour session, that’s an afternoon taken care of! All of these days out have websites so make sure you go online before you head out to check opening times and special events.

Divorce
When all else has failed Getting a divorce can feel like a demoralising and daunting task. We look at the process from start to finish
T
aking the decision to get a divorce can be a difficult and emotional one. If there is a lot to sort such as property, possessions and sorting arrangements for any children involved you must first begin by being absolutely sure that divorce is the right thing to do. If you are in any doubt then seek advice. Relationship counselling can help you to identify the issues you have and help you towards resolving them. If you feel you are past that and are sure that divorce is your best option then there are a series of steps you need to follow. You are eligible to divorce if you have been married at least a year and that marriage is legally recognised in the UK. You must also have a permanent residence in England or Wales. Grounds for divorce fall into five categories: 1) Adultery (your husband or wife had sex with someone else of the opposite sex) 2) Unreasonable behaviour (including violence, physical or verbal abuse, drunkenness or drug taking) 3) Desertion (you have been left without your agreement for more than 2 out of the last 2 and a half years) 4) You have lived apart for more than 2 years (you must both agree to the divorce) 5) You have lived apart for more than 5 years (enough to get a divorce without you both agreeing)
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN behalf. If your spouse disagrees with the divorce petition or there are many or complicated issues to be resolved before the divorce can be finalised such as finances or arrangements for children then it is good practice to hire a solicitor to handle everything for you. Hiring a solicitor can be beneficial in many ways. Firstly, a solicitor will have an expertise that you won’t when it comes to the legal aspects of divorce and will be able to offer objective advice. If communication between you and your spouse has broken down they will be able to communicate either with them or through their solicitor and negotiate terms of the divorce with detachment from the emotion that often causes argument. They will be able to remove some of the stress by completing all of the paperwork to allow you to concentrate on getting the divorce completed properly.
“If you both agree on the divorce and issues such as splitting possessions are straightforward then it is possible to arrange the divorce yourself.”
You need to begin by filing a divorce petition. This is an application to the court for permission to divorce. It is at this point that you will have to give the reasons for your petition. If you and your spouse are in agreement about getting a divorce then you can apply for a decree nisi which is a court document confirming that there is no reason as to why you cannot get a divorce. After the decree nisi is granted you will need to wait 6 weeks before you can apply for your final document, a decree absolute. This legally ends your marriage. The 6 week waiting period will allow you to sort any details out regarding the divorce. If you both agree on the divorce and issues such as splitting possessions are straightforward then it is possible to arrange the divorce yourself. If you both agree to the divorce but are unable to fully agree on any issues that arise it may be possible to enter mediation to see if it can be sorted amicably on your SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Sutterton Veterinary Centre “The surgery offer their own Pet Health Care plan which includes many products and services which contribute to the health and wellbeing of your dog and cat...”
S
ince opening their doors in December 2013 Sutterton Veterinary Centre has gone from strength to strength. Conveniently situated just off the Sutterton Roundabout it is easily accessible from Spalding, Boston and all of the surrounding villages. Benefitting from a large car park, once you go in a modern and inviting atmosphere awaits. After checking in at reception you will find a large waiting room with separate areas for cats and dogs. As well as the nation’s favourite pets the surgery can also take care of your exotic pets. Be it check-ups, boosters or flea treatments the experienced team are always on hand with expert advice and guidance. If there is something wrong with your pet which requires investigation the surgery has a lot of on-site equipment such as a digital X-ray and Ultrasound scanner and blood analysis is also carried out on site so there are no long waiting times for results which means that a diagnosis can be made faster (and treatment can begin sooner). Crucially, the surgery offers a 24-hour emergency service so once you have registered with the surgery you can rest assured that you will have access to the team whenever you need it should an emergency arise. The practice intends to apply for “Hospital” status in the next few months after having made some final building alterations and increased staffing numbers. This would allow for 24h care of in-patients and would be the only practice in the local area to offer this level of facilities and on site staffing. Currently the surgery already offers an extensive, comfortable kennelled area specifically for dogs. There is also a separate room for isolating any coughing dogs or for sick cases of
potentially contagious diseases such as parvovirus. As with the waiting rooms, there is also a separate area for the cattery, ensuring your cat can stay calm and relaxed while staying. For our exotic friends, there is dedicated vivarium reptile housing including thermostatically heated enclosures and the provision of ultraviolet lighting. The surgery offer their own Pet Health Care plan which includes many products and services which contribute to the health and wellbeing of your dog and cat so if you would like to pay monthly rather than risk the possibility of large bills if something unexpected comes up.
Opening hours are 8:30 – 6:30 Monday – Friday and 9-12:30 on Saturday. To register or book an appointment please call 0845 5484478 or 01205 460513. You can also visit the website, www.suttertonvets.co.uk for more information. 24 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Focus on The Deepings
The Deepings Raft Race 2015 Following on from the hugely successful 2014 Deepings Raft Race, the organisers are hoping that 2015’s event will be bigger and better than ever!

his year’s raft race is taking place on Sunday August 2 and the chosen theme for 2015 is Cartoon Characters giving everyone plenty of scope for their outfits! This year’s nominated charities are Dementia Support South Lincs and The Exotic Pet Refuge in Deeping St James. Last year a magnificent £3,600 was raised and split between Great Ormand Street Hospital, Parkinsons UK and Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Last year more than 30 teams took part from businesses, sports teams, local clubs and pubs. Races are split into five categories – youth race (under 18s), main race, fun race, ladies race and pub race. Races begin at the foot bridge on Bridge Street, Deeping St James, heading upstream under the old stone bridge up towards the locks. As a further challenge all categories (except the youth race) will be required to take their rafts out of the river and up the bank before launching them back into the river before proceeding past the old meadow! Anybody wishing to enter a raft into this year’s event should start by visiting the website, www.deepingsraftrace.co.uk Whilst there are a loyal band of sponsors the organisers are always on the lookout for anyone keen to get involved with the event, either as a sponsor (of races, raffle prizes etc), having a trade stand or taking a two hour marshalling slot on the day of the race. Additionally they are looking for any local bands who would like to showcase themselves at the pre-raft race music night.

The Deepings Raft Race Basic Guide To Rafting: 1) Consider the weight and design of your raft (as you will be required to lift it in abd out of the river!) 2) Stay with your raft – it’s easier for help to deal with and it provides flotation 3) Keep away from wildlife as they can be aggressive 4) Look for marked exit points. Areas have been cleared to ensure a smooth and trouble free exit. 5) Under 16s and non-swimmers must wear a buoyancy aid. 6) Keep out of the trees! Trees can tangle you up and push you under, especially where a current flows. 7) Wear something sensible on your feet. Discarded fishing tackle and sharp objects are potentially abundant and can cause unnecessary injury. Also, the banks of the river will be slippery. 8) Be conscious of the current. There are hazards such as bridges and sluice gates you can find yourself upon very quickly if care is not taken. 9) Don’t get tangled up. Make sure there are no loose ropes or unnecessary entanglement issues. 10) Be aware of major obstacles such as other rafts breaking up. The race may need to be stopped to remove debris. 11) Don’t drink before the race. Alcohol and water sports very rarely end well when combined 12) If in any doubt at all SEEK ADVICE!

Taking Kerb Appeal to the Next Level If you are looking to make some home improvements then you might like to work from the outside in. Making alterations to the exterior can dramatically alter the appearance of your house

f your soffits, fascias and guttering are old or tatty then replacing them will give your home an instant facelift. Fascias are the boards that run along the lower edge of your roof. It is fixed to the roof trusses and carries the guttering. Soffits sit behind the fascias and are ventilated to allow proper air flow into your roof. Guttering is crucial as it carries water away from your house to ensure no water ingress which can cause huge problems in the long term. Whereas soffits and fascias were traditionally made of timber, the most popular types today are made of UPVC as they are extremely durable and will not rot. If you have hired a professional team to replace your soffits and fascias then you ought to seriously consider getting the guttering done at the same time while they are up there! All three come in a variety of colours to complement your style of home. If you own an older property you might like to look at repointing the brickwork. This is where any old broken mortar is removed and replaced or gaps between the bricks are filled in. While it might not seem like an important job it can stop any water from getting into the house. Changing your windows can not only update the look of your home but also help to save money on your energy bills as they are more energy efficient. If you have timber or aluminium frames then consider updating to UPVC. If you are updating the front of your home then consider doing the back too when it comes to windows! Pay attention to any fencing that you have at the front of your house. Keeping it painted to stop weathering and effecting any minor repairs as and

when they occur will keep your front garden looking cared for and tidy. Also consider your driveway. Driveways can look massively different depending on what’s on them. Some are complete concrete, some paved and some gravelled. If you choose to have a new driveway laid then it is wise to use a professional, a wonky DIY driveway won’t do anybody any good! If you would like to completely change the appearance of the outside of your home then you could look at render or cladding. This involves covering the brickwork of your home with either timber or a textured cement which comes in many different colours – just check before you choose a bright wacky colour that it is in keeping with the houses around you! In all cases it is best to use professional companies unless you are particularly confident in your abilities! It won’t be cheaper doing it yourself if you then have to pay for it to be undone and redone!

Gardening
Pest Control! Of all of the pests in your garden perhaps the most unwelcome are rodents. We take a look at these furry invaders and provide some help in how to get rid of them
D
uring the summer we love to get out into our gardens. To barbecue, lounge about or relax by doing a little gardening, the garden it where it’s at. And we love to attract wildlife into our gardens. Birds, bees, butterflies and a myriad of welcome visitors add beauty to the outdoors but what about those unwelcome creatures that are also attracted to our gardens? The thought of having rodents in the gardens (or even worse, near your house) can be awful, so what attracts them and if you are unfortunate enough to get them, how do you get rid of them?
Rats come with risks to health as they transmit diseases such as Weil’s disease which can be very serious indeed. As well as this rats have mites and fleas which can be problematic if you have cats and dogs as they can be transferred to them. As well as the health aspect rats and mice can be very destructive due to the fact that they love to chew and gnaw. If they get into your house then wiring is a firm favourite of rodents along with walls to get to food or create a nest.
â?ą BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Mike from PPM Services offers his top ten tips for avoiding rodent infestation: 1. Ensure your premises are in good repair. Repair broken tiles and cracks or holes in walls. 2. Remove sources of food and water. Rodents will only nest where there is food and water nearby. Repair dripping taps and secure dry food in plastic containers. Do not leave out pet food longer than you should. 3. Remove shelter and nesting material. Newspapers, plastic bags, and cardboard will provide nesting material for rodents. Do not store them unless you have to, and check on them regularly. A wood store near the back door is a favourite for mice. 4. Keep drains and gutters in good repair. Rodents can get into your home through broken pipes and drains. 5. Place compost bins on hard standing. Rats will burrow underneath a compost bin because it is warm and a good source of food. By placing your compost bin on concrete slabs it will prevent rats getting underneath your compost bin. 6. Install door sweeps to keep out mice. Mice only need a space of 6mm to gain access under your door. A door sweep will help keep them out. 7. Keep bird feeders at minimum level. Rodents will easily climb a bird feeder to get to bird food. Over spillage and crumbs that fall from bird tables are also a source of food for rodents. 8. Keep plastic rubbish bags inside metal bins. It would be wise to invest in a couple of galvanised metal bins to store rubbish while waiting for collection day. Rodents will get through bags with ease. It will cause a mess and the rodents will keep coming back where they know there is food. 9. De-clutter your home. Clutter provides nesting materials, safety and harbourage for rodents. Long term clutter is a breeding ground for rats and mice. Clean behind your fridge and oven every few months, particularly just before winter. Rodents can live on crumbs. 10. Seek advice from a professional pest controller. A reputable pest controller will give you free advice on how to avoid rodents and secure you home from unwanted guests.
If you have rats or mice in your home there will be signs such as droppings and noises (especially at night as that is when rodents are most active). Rodents in the garden can be a little trickier to detect. Unfortunately most people realise they have them when they first see them! If you do see mice or rats in your garden try to find out where they are going to (for example, compost heaps or any other warm dry places). If you feel confident then you can trap or bait them using a rat bait station (to stop friendly visitors like hedgehogs getting access to it). If the problem seems large or if you are in any doubt then it is best to speak to a professional pests controller. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY
he hatchback came to British showrooms in March and has, according to the firm, “brought new levels of technological sophistication and driving pleasure to the competitive super-mini segment”. Is it spin? No, not really, as I found out behind the wheel of the up-to-the-minute model. Without a doubt, even before any driving takes place, the Mazda2 makes a fine impression. Featuring an aggressive headlamp shape, the hatchback shuns insipid monobox styling in favour of dynamic, brawny, cab-rearward proportions. It is more attention-grabbing than super-mini deity, the Ford Fiesta - and it has a sportier posture than, say, the Hyundai i20 or Volkswagen’s Polo. Inside, the enthusiasm continues. There is a lot of shoulder and rear knee room in the front; and this is harmonized by supportive, comfortable seats, as well as crystal clear instrumentation and switchgear. The rear is a little cramped – but no worse than many cars at this end of the motor market. Two adult passengers can get in – but, unless you are small, you won’t want to sit in the stern for a long journey. In the real world, it is
children who will spend most of their time in the Mazda’s back seats. There is a five level trim structure - SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav. The materials in the top of the range Sport Nav model, on test here, are admirable yet schizophrenic. Most touch-points are covered and cushioned to the point of luxury. On the other hand, low-priced, scratchy, plastics around the electric window switches rain on the parade. In-car connectivity and kit levels are up there with the best. A seven-inch colour touch-screen display, a rotary multimedia commander infotainment control, and an integrated satellite navigation system feature. Benefits also include alloy wheels, smart keyless entry and climate control air-conditioning. The boot is respectable too; it is deep, oblong and therefore practical – ideal for fitting in the weekly shop around your tot’s folded buggy. There are two engines to choose from: a 1.5-litre petrol, which will likely occupy 90 per cent of sales and has three different power outputs (74, 89 and 113bhp) and an efficient 104bhp 1.5-litre diesel. This is the variant I drove; it is fairly hushed for an oil-burner and has an agreeable swell of low down pull. Even better, the car handles sharply and rides well.
Furthermore, the Mazda2 integrates a comprehensive arrangement of active safety systems, and is priced from £11,995 to £17,395 on-the-road. Its arrival is currently being celebrated by the availability of a special £14,995 89bhp petrol powered Sports Launch Edition. This particular car comes festooned with equipment and, quite frankly, represents great value for money. Indeed, with a winning combination of performance, fuel economy, safety and Mazda’s patented driving fun, the all-new Mazda2 line-up has the potential to replicate the popularity of its siblings – the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3. So, you may now see why I think the box-fresh Mazda2 is a jewel in the East Asian car maker’s crown. Add the company’s excellent reliability record into the mix and you have a car that will serve you well.
