What a month it’s been! The weather seems to not know what it’s doing one moment to the next. As I write this we are being battered by wind and rain, yesterday there was sleet showers and earlier today there was sun! Hopefully Spring is not too far away now – don’t forget to put your watches and clocks forward an hour on March 30th. This issue we are optimistic that the weather is going to improve and those that are green fingered can get out into the garden. We also look at how to make over your kitchen. To keep updated with advice, recipes and what’s on locally visit www.simplyspalding. co.uk. There’s even a for sale section, so you may pick up a bargain too! First in a series of new council houses for South Holland Tenants will soon be occupying brand new South Holland District Council houses. The four two-bedroom properties in Surfleet have just been completed by Weston Hills developer Broadgate Homes. Cllr Christine Lawton, portfolio holder for housing landlord, and ward councillors Liz Sneath and Sally-Ann Slade joined district council housing landlord manager Richard Scorthorne at the handover of the homes on Monday (January 20). Cllr Lawton said: “I’m very impressed with the houses. They have a very useful layout and plentiful space outside. “They will be a very welcome addition to our housing stock and we look forward to tenants being able to enjoy living in them as soon as possible.” The semi-detached properties are in a cul-de-sac off Coalbeach Lane South, called Pinkthorn Close. The name Pinkthorn has historical links to the site. Broadgate Homes chief executive Ian Canham joined contracts manager John Crunkhorn to hand over the keys to the properties after completion of the 26-week project. He said: “We are grateful to the district council to have been given the opportunity

to build these properties and wish the future tenants every happiness in their new homes.” Local builders are due to complete more semi-detached two-bedroom council houses soon. National Charity Celebrates Achievement through Recycling Recycling Partnership Continues to go from Strength to Strength National deafblind charity, Sense, have been working in partnership with UK based recycling company, The Recycling Factory, to help raise funds by asking supporters to send in their used inkjet cartridges, toner cartridges and mobile phones. In 2013, the charity doubled the amount they raised, and there are now more than 90 Sense shops that are actively part of the scheme. Sense supports and campaigns for children and adults who are deafblind. They were initially established out of a family support group started in 1955 and to this day the charity keeps the experience, skills and views of those families central to its work. Sense offers specialist services throughout the UK with its network of skilled staff and 6 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

dedicated volunteers, hoping to reach out to more people than ever before, and helping deafblind people live their lives to the full. The Recycling Factory is confident that with continued support, the scheme can gain even more momentum for 2014. The scheme is nationwide and 100% of each item’s value is donated directly to the charity. The service is completely free of charge and is a fantastic way of helping to raise vital

funds whilst helping the environment at the same time. If you would like to request freepost Sense envelopes or boxes and help to raise vital funds through recycling, simply call 0800 091 0696 or email sense@trf-uk.com.

Youngsters to get more opportunity in sport after funding boost Young people in Lincolnshire will have even more opportunity to get into sport after an extra 40 projects have been accepted to receive Sportivate funding to run weekly sport sessions. Backed by National Lottery funding, Sportivate funding aims to give young people aged 11-25 who currently aren’t playing sport in their own time the chance to find a sport they like. The young people are then helped to find a club or other venue where they can keep taking part. Lincolnshire Sport help to deliver the legacy project through Sport England, who is providing lottery money to each county from 2011 until 2017 in an effort to help encourage ‘semi-sporty’ teenagers aged 11 – 25 to take part in more sport. Lucy Blakey, Children and Young People Officer at Lincolnshire Sport, said: “Sportivate not only provides a great opportunity to encourage young people to get involved in sport; it provides a huge

financial incentive for sports clubs, schools, leisure facilities and others, to deliver more sport across Lincolnshire. It is great to see so many different projects receiving funding to encourage young people to take part in sport”. The funding will be allocated to a variety of sports projects to run sessions between April and September 2014 and will fund over 20 different sports. The next deadline to apply for Year 4 Sportivate funding to run a project targeting women and girls sports sessions between July to September, October to December or January to March is Friday, May 30, 2014. Fresh step to highlight properly licensed private hire vehicles Passengers wanting to use a private hire vehicle in South Holland will now have another visible way of checking that it is properly licensed. South Holland District Council is distributing door stickers to all private hire vehicle operators which it licenses. The stickers, which include the council logo and the license number of the vehicle, also carry a reminder that private hire vehicles must be pre-booked. They cannot be hailed from the street, so their drivers cannot legally ply for trade. Cllr Malcolm Chandler, district council portfolio holder for Licensing, said: “We are fortunate in South Holland that our private hire car services are of good standing. However, there have been complaints that some individuals stating that they are offering a taxi service may not be licensed. “South Holland District Council takes the safety of private hire vehicle passengers very seriously and this is another way in which we are striving to ensure the best possible practice in our district. “Vehicles licensed for private hire only are not insured as licensed taxis, and passengers using private hire vehicles which have not been pre-booked risk travelling in vehicles which are not insured to be hailed nor to pick up

passengers from the taxi ranks. “The highly visible door sticker protects both the passengers and the licensed taxi operators. “It will help anyone identify that the vehicle they are getting into is correctly licensed by the district council and, should a complaint wish to be made about a journey, the number on it will help in identifying the driver concerned.” It will become a condition of the annual test carried out by the district council that all private hire vehicles must have the stickers displayed. LICENSED VEHICLES CURRENTLY HAVE A REAR PLATE AND A ROUND IDENTITY STICKER ON THE FRONT WINDSCREEN ABOVE THE TAX DISC.

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Munchkins Pre-School This term our Pre-school have been looking at the seasonal changes in our garden. The children have been investigating ice, looking at polar animals and their habitats as well as enjoying popular stories such as ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ and ‘The polar express’ to fire their imaginations. We have been playing in our role play bear cave and setting off on imaginary journeys on our very own steam train. We have also been looking at cultural celebrations and had lots of fun tasting Chinese food on a visit to Shanghai Gardens

restaurant to celebrate Chinese New Year. Here, we were able to get a close up view of a dragon dance puppet head and play on the giant drum and cymbals. We are very much looking forward to the next term when we can explore our garden and look out for signs of Spring around us.

Ayscoughfee Hall School The school has been bustling with activity at the start of the Spring term. The junior children had the amazing experience of taking part in the Young Voices concert at the Birmingham LG arena. They spent the afternoon rehearsing with over 6,000 other school children led by world famous conductor David Lawrence. They then gave a fantastic evening performance to a packed arena accompanied by celebrity and former X-factor finalist, Stacey Solomon. Back at school, the Year 3 children held a Roman day where they had a great opportunity to experience life as a Roman. Dressed in typical costumes, they learnt about the types of medicine and weapons used in Ancient Roman times, designed and created their own shields and even went into battle against ferocious Celts. This term children from all the classes have completed work on Famous Artists ranging from Kandinsky in Kindergarten to Andy Warhol in Year 5. They used a range of techniques from collage to the latest computer technology! We now have

an amazing Art Display in the main entrance, which every child has contributed to. On the sports field, the girls enjoyed a successful afternoon of netball against Copthill School. The under nine and under eleven teams won: 8-3 and 6-3, whilst the under tens narrowly lost: 3-4. The football teams fought very competitively against the much larger Peterborough School but were unable to hold out for a result with the under nines losing:1-3 and the under elevens: 3-5. The school held its very own Film Premiere evening on Friday, 31st January. Children who were in the Film Making Club last summer term dressed to impress and were welcomed by reporters who interviewed them on their very own red carpet. Following the viewing of the film “Beyond Belief” an Oscar was presented to all the children who had acted in or formed part of the crew making the film or in postproduction, adding music or special effects. An entertaining evening was had by all of the children and their guests.

Weston Hills CofE Primary Our Year 5/6 children will be taking part in a Netball and Quicksticks Hockey Tournament organised by Agilitas this term. Good luck to them all! Class 4 will be having a Viking Presentation for parents/guardians this term as part of their History topic work. We were very excited about two World War II events which took place this term. On 6th & 7th February the Whole School Production was based around World War II meets Romeo & Juliet! And on 12th & 13th February we are had a Mobile WW2 Museum visit school. Our extra curricular activities this term include a Book Club, Chess, Homework, Taiko, ICT, Choir, Healthy Cookery, Hula Hoop, Change4Life & Dance.

St John The Baptist Primary School Children at St John the Baptist Primary School have really been getting into sport over the last few weeks and have put on brilliant displays of determination, team work, support and good sportsmanship. Children have been lucky enough to have a lunchtime programme of sports activities every day of the week; when they receive training from an external sports trainer and they get the opportunity to try out for various sports and school teams. There has been enormous interest in school with around 70 – 80 children attending each of the trial sessions. Everyone has had the chance to take part and staff had the very difficult job of choosing children for the team. Children have been selected for their fantastic attitude and their drive to do their very best when they represent the school. Over the last few weeks we have had teams attending tournaments in Football, Athletics (taking part in a large number of events), Quicksticks and Hockey and Netball. The expressions on the faces in our team photographs says it all! They have had a fantastic time and have been a credit to the school. Well done everyone!! Mr Reid, Headteacher, is keen for the children at St John’s School to take part in these sporting activities and the school encourages healthy lifestyles. The school has been awarded the ‘Healthy Schools Award’ over the last few years and promotes healthy eating every week at their healthy tuck shop!

Tackling rural crime

Rural crime is never far from the news

espite a fall in recorded crime in South Holland, those that live and work in our rural communities can be left feeling vulnerable when they hear of thefts of heating oil or metal scrap from neighbouring communities. The last few months also saw a worrying trend in the theft of high-value tractors. Unfortunately, our corner of Lincolnshire has always attracted travelling criminals. We work closely with our colleagues in Norfolk and Cambridge to ensure we are targeting those that cause us the most harm. I have also increased the number of police officers based at Holbeach. But we can’t be everywhere, so we do rely on people in our communities being vigilant and reporting suspicious activity. Last October a £30,000 stolen tractor was recovered and a man arrested thanks to an eagle-eyed member of the public, who saw it being driven in Whaplode Drove.

There is more that you can do to make South Holland less attractive to criminals Machinery, tools and plant equipment

PCSO Kirsty Taylor (estates)

If possible, secure or immobilise vehicles or pieces of equipment when they’re not in use. Again, if practical, try to move machinery from fields, especially if it’s near a road. Always keep tools, etc, locked away out of sight.

PCSO Paul Coupland (estates)

To help identify your property:

PCSO Kim Marlowe (estates) PCSO Ryan Ellis (estates)

PC Ian Coulson (rural)

Use engravers to mark vehicles and equipment with your postcode, followed by the first two letters of your farm’s name. Keep a record of serial, chassis and model numbers.

Fuel and oil theft With the price of crude oil rising, oil theft is becoming increasingly common. For advice on how to reduce this in your area, please visit our heating oil theft prevention page.

Livestock PCSO Sally Pusey (Pinchbeck, Surfleet)

PCSO Colin Abbotts (Gosberton, Quadring, Donington) PCSO Adam Davis (Crowland, Deeping St Nicholas)

If livestock is stolen it’s important for you to be able to give the police an accurate description. Eartags and horn brands help police to identify stock. Freeze branding, hot branding or tattooing your postcode will also help. Always take photographs of valuable animals.

Farmhouses Farmhouses can be targeted by burglars because they are often large and in isolated areas. Fit British Standard deadlocks to all outside doors and always use them. These can also be reinforced with bolts. The main door should have a security chain and wide-angle door viewer, so you can see who is on the other side. Consider installing a burglar alarm. Fit window locks on all ground floor windows. Keep shotguns and firearms in a securely locked place. Always store ammunition separately. If you have to keep cash or jewellery in the house, put it in a quality safe. Keep a record of all valuable possessions. Whenever possible, use a security marking device to mark them with your postcode followed by the first two letters of your farm’s name. Take photos of valuable items next to a ruler (to indicate scale). Never show opportunist burglars you’re not there by leaving notes for traders, etc. When you’re away ask a neighbour to keep an eye on the property.

If you see a crime in progress always CALL 999

Animals can be an easy target for thieves. Regularly check the fields where your animals are grazing. Keep your hedges, fences and gates in good repair. Field gate hinges should have capping hinges so they can’t be removed easily. Cattle grids should be removable and locked out of position when they’re not in use. Use locking posts to obstruct large openings to yards, etc.

Consider installing CCTV

“Never show opportunist burglars you’re not there by leaving notes for traders, etc. When you’re away ask a neighbour to keep an eye on the property.”

Outbuildings

Store any valuable equipment and tools in a secure building with a well built, locked door. Use British Standard locks, good quality locking bars and high security padlocks. Windows can be protected with metal bars. Always lock outbuildings when they’re not in use. A worthwhile investment is fitting outside security lights controlled by an automatic time-switch or infrared beams. Again, consider installing CCTV. For further information and advice, there is a video about tackling rural crime at http://lincs.police.uk/ Advice/Wildlife-and-Rural-Crime. You can also talk to your local Crime Reduction Officer, Ian Greenshields, by calling 101.

Advice

before you buy s p i T Top tickets for an event by Lisa Barwell

When you buy a ticket for a sporting, music or theatre event, there are things you can check in advance to get the best possible tickets and to avoid problems later What to check before you buy tickets Before you buy event tickets: • make sure you are happy with the price. Compare prices charged by different ticket sellers for different types of ticket, for example seated or standing • find out what the ‘face value’ of the ticket is - the cost of the ticket without the extras on top such as an administration fee • check if you’ll be charged for anything else like a booking fee. The ticket seller must provide this information. If they don’t, they could be committing an offence. If you buy through the box office, you may avoid these fees • check the type of ticket you are buying for example stalls or restricted view where you might not see everything on the stage. The ticket seller must provide this information • find out how you’ll get your tickets, for example by post, recorded delivery which you have to sign for, or by collecting them. The ticket seller should get the tickets to you before the event • find out when you get your tickets, for example straight away or much closer to the date of the event if you are buying in advance • check what the policy is if your tickets arrive too late. You have a right to get a refund. If the policy says a refund is not offered, this may be unfair and you should seek further advice • find out if the ticket seller is an official ticket seller for that event, through the

press, TV or radio publicity or by ringing the event organisers • check if the ticket seller is a member of The Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers (STAR) or the Association of Secondary Ticket Agents (ASTA). These associations have codes of practice for members to follow and a way of dealing with complaints. • check that you are not buying tickets from an illegal website.

How to check a ticketing website is genuine

You can find out if a ticketing website is genuine by: • looking at the type of tickets sold – be suspicious if they are for events that have sold out or haven’t officially gone on sale. You can often find out when tickets go on sale from press, radio or TV promotions • looking at feedback about the website or company - enter its name into a search engine to see if there are comments from buyers about whether they have received tickets • checking contact details for the website - there should be a landline phone number and a full postal address. Avoid using the site if there is only a PO box address and mobile phone number, as it could be difficult to get in touch after you buy tickets. These addresses and phone numbers are easy to change and difficult to trace • using www.safeconcerts.com and entering the web address of the site you are looking at to see if you can find out more about it

• use a site that has a red, black and white kitemark provided by the Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers (STAR) with the words ‘secure tickets from authorised retailers’ • contacting the Association of Secondary Ticket Agents (ASTA), to see if they know if the site you are looking at is genuine or not • using football club official websites to buy football tickets. Contact the football club to get the official website address if you’re unsure.

What you can do if you’ve bought a ticket from an illegal ticketing website

If you think you’ve bought a ticket from a scam website, you should report it to the police. You can also report it via the action fraud website, at www.actionfraud.police. uk. You may not get your money back, but you can try and prevent this site being used by others. You can also contact the professional associations for ticket sellers, so they are aware and can prevent this.

LIBRARY NEWS

Wool by Hugh Howey

Yikes, Stinkysaurus! By Pamela Butchart and Sam Lloyd

Part of a science fiction trilogy, Wool is the first part and has been recommended by a customer at Pinchbeck Library. In a ruined and hostile landscape, a community exists in a giant underground silo. Inside, men and women live an enclosed life full of rules and regulations, of secrets and lies. The people who don’t follow the rules are the dangerous ones; they dare to hope and dream, and infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple and deadly. They are allowed outside. Jules is one of these people. She may well be the last. If you enjoy this, the rest of the trilogy comprises the titles Shift and Dust, if you’ve never tried Sci-Fi before this may be where to start.

Another recommendation from a Pinchbeck borrower for this month’s junior read. Stinkysaurus is the smelliest dinosaur in the whole wide world, and don’t the other dinosaurs know it! The dinos rushed for cover, when Stinkysaurus was about! He smelled so bad that just one whiff, could knock a T-Rex out! Finally, however, the other dinosaurs decide that the time has come for Stinkysaurus to take a bath. But will Stinkysaurus agree? Find out in this pong-fest of a picture book. This book is boldly bright with a cute twist!

SmokeFree Update There has been some recent national discussion about extending the Smoke Free Regulations to cars carrying children. There have also been further suggestions about banning the sale of e-cigarettes to under 18’s. Did you know it has been six years since the Smokefree Regulations came into force in England. Do you know the current legal position? In summary: • If you are a manager/owner of a premise you need to make sure that you have taken all reasonable precautions to prevent smoking in the workplace. This includes work vehicles that are used by one or more persons. Failure to prevent smoking can lead to a fine by a court up to £2,500. If you fail to display no smoking signs a fixed penalty notice can be issued for up to £200 (discounted to £150 if paid within 15 days from the date of issue) or a fine by a court up to £1000. • As an employee of the business if you are caught smoking within a work premises or vehicle by an enforcement officer, you (as an individual, not the company) will be given a Fixed Penalty Notice of £50 (discounted to £30 if paid within 15 days) or a fine by the court up to £200. • If members of the public smoke in a smokefree place, they will also be committing an offence and similar fines and fixed penalty notices exist. Smokefree legislation is enforced by local councils, usually within Environmental Health. Officers work within the district on a range of enforcement issues and, should they come across breaches of the legislation, will take the appropriate enforcement action. In addition to this if you have any concerns regarding smoking within your workplace you can call or email The Food, Health & Safety Team at South Holland District Council on 01775 761161 or foodhs@sholland.gov.uk. Smokefree Lincolnshire has produced a free workplace toolkit to help small and medium size businesses with information on the current legislation. The toolkit, which has been written with the support of Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue and the Phoenix Stop Smoking Service, is available at http://www. lincolnshire.gov.uk/smokefree-lincs/areas-of-work/workplace-toolkit/

Food & Drink

Spring vegetable risotto ❱ BY HAYLEY WILLERTON

Want a quick and easy meal that makes the most of the vegetables of the season? Tantalise your tastebuds by trying this simple recipe

Ingredients

“As an alternative to a Sunday roast, why not cook your mum something a little different. This fits the bill perfectly.”

1 Vegetable Stock Pot 1tbsp olive oil 1 shallot, very finely chopped ½ orange or red pepper, very finely chopped 175g risotto rice 100ml dry white wine ½ carrot, finely diced 75g baby broad beans, fresh or frozen and thawed ½ courgette, finely diced 50g asparagus tips, chopped 50g peas 2tbsps grated Parmesan cheese 15g butter

Preparation method 1 First make your stock by dissolving the Vegetable Stock Pot in 500ml of boiling water, stirring until thoroughly dissolved. 2 Heat the olive oil in a heavy-based saucepan or casserole dish. Add in the shallot and orange pepper and fry very gently for 3 minutes, stirring often, so that it softens but without browning at all. By doing this you’re removing the water content of the vegetables and allowing their natural sweetness to come out. 3 Add in the risotto rice, and mix in thoroughly, coating with the olive oil. 4 Pour in the white wine and bring to the boil, allowing it to boil for 2 minutes to remove its acidity. Work your rice as it cooks, to ensure even cooking. Working your rice is a very important part of cooking risotto properly. 5 Add in around 100ml of the Knorr vegetable stock and stir in the carrots and broad beans. Cook, stirring for 3 minutes more, then add in another 100ml of the stock and

cook stirring for 3 minutes more. Lastly, add in another 100ml and cook stirring for 3 minutes more. 6 Add in the asparagus and courgettes, together with the remaining stock and cook, stirring and working the rice, until the rice is tender, for around 4–6 minutes. 7 Once the rice is cooked to your taste, mix in the peas and remove from direct heat. 8 Sprinkle in the Parmesan and add in the butter in pieces, allow to stand for a few seconds to allow the Parmesan and butter to melt, then mix in thoroughly. If you don’t like Parmesan, then don’t add any. It’s your decision. Serve at once. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Focus on Bourne

Born to be the most powerful man in the land ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

B

Bourne has links to a whole host of notable names past and present, but one of the town’s most famous - and important - sons is undoubtedly Tudor statesman Sir William Cecil, Lord Burghley

orn in a house in Bourne town centre on September 13, 1520, Burghley grew up to be one of the major political figures during the reign of Elizabeth I. He served in Henry VIII’s household, as well as in the courts of Edward VI and Mary I too, holding all of the major political posts in the land. As well as Elizabeth’s chief advisor for the majority of her reign, he was also Secretary of State twice and Lord High Treasurer from 1572. Burghley is also acknowledged as the founder of the Cecil dynasty, which has produced many influential politicians, including two Prime Ministers. For all intents and purposes he was the most powerful non-Royal in all of England and Wales. Burghley was the only son born into a minor noble family that had fought for Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. His father Richard Cecil was the owner of the Burghley estate, near Stamford. Educated at Grantham and Stamford Grammar Schools, he moved onto St John’s College, Cambridge University, at the age of 14, where he was heavily influenced by Humanism and Protestantism. In 1543 Burghley became a Member of Parliament,

Burghley House, Stamford, was built for Cecil between 1555 and 1587, and modelled on the privy lodgings of Richmond Palace. It was subsequently the residence of his descendants, the Earls and Marquises of Exeter. Pictures: Reproduced from A Portrait of Bourne © REX NEEDLE 2014 .

where he quickly developed a reputation as a fine minister. It was his ability to retain vast amounts of information, and his tact and decision making skills that most impressed his colleagues, although his rise to power made him many enemies too. Burghley had known Elizabeth many years before she became Queen, and on her accession in 1558 he was appointed her secretary, after which he gained a number of other important positions. An excellent diplomat and administrator as well as politician, his influence touched all aspects of policy at home and abroad during Elizabeth’s 45 year reign. Burghley remained extremely loyal to the sovereign and was the architect of many of Britain’s most successful policies, and for this he was greatly rewarded. In February 1571 Elizabeth elevated him to the title Baron Burghley. The statesman died at his London residence on August 4, 1598 after collapsing, possibly due to stroke or heart attack, and his body was buried in St Martin’s Church, Stamford. His former birthplace, now the Burghley Arms pub, carries a plaque on the outside acknowledging the link to its former resident.

Choosing a Nursery

Choosing a Nursery ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

W

Selecting a nursery that is right for both you and your child can be a difficult decision

hilst you are under no legal obligation to send your child to a nursery many parents feel that it is good preparation for moving up to a school setting. Nurseries come in all shapes and sizes but broadly fall into four categories: 1) Playgroup or pre-school group 2) Private nursery schools 3) State nursery school 4) Nursery attached to a primary school With all the choice available where is the best place to start? For many parents the first port of call is to ask other parents they know about which nursery their children attend as well as asking for recommendations. Make a list of the things which are important to you personally that a nursery should have. This can include things such as “having a large outdoor area” or “there must be a lovely quiet area” After word of mouth you can take a look online or see who is advertising locally to draw up a list of the nurseries close to you. The next thing to do is choose a selection you like the look of and book visits to each of them. You can call the nurseries you are most interested in and enquire about availability as well as asking any initial questions you might have. If you find that your list of names is too long and you want to cut it down before you begin visiting then take a look at their OFSTED reports. It is a good way of comparing nurseries as well as seeing if they excel in the areas you find important. You can find all the information you need at www.ofsted.gov.uk So now the exciting part – the visits! Make sure you leave plenty of time to visit each one so you do not have to rush, as well as being able to ask any questions

“Take a look at the toys and equipment. Are they in a good condition and well looked after?”

you may have. Remember that each nursery will offer something different for your child so keep an open mind – you may find that something which had never occurred to you as being important in selecting a nursery suddenly becomes essential to you! Whilst on your visits you may wish to look out for the following things and ask these questions: Do the children look content and interested in what they are doing? The best way to gauge the atmosphere of a nursery is to see how engaged the children are. If you are surrounded by happy children and helpful staff then you can feel confident leaving your child there knowing that they will have a similar experience. Ask about a typical day – what routines are there and what sort of activities will your child be taking part in? You can also take this opportunity to ask about the food they serve. Are there healthy selections and snack opportunities throughout the day? Do they have meals similar to the ones you would serve at home or is there the chance for your child to experience new tastes and flavours? Take a look at the toys and equipment. Are they in a good condition and well looked after? Don’t be afraid to ask about the qualifications that the staff hold. A good nursery will be only too happy to share this information with you. After all, it will be demonstrating to you that their staff are able to meet your child’s needs. Also spend time talking to the staff. If they are friendly and enthusiastic then you can start to picture how they will be with your child. What does the area outdoors look like and how often do the children get to go outdoors? This can be especially important in the summer months. Once you feel you have decided on a favourite then contact your preferred nursery and ask for a trial session. This may only be an hour or two but you can experience dropping off your child and seeing how much fun they have had when you pick them up. After all that research and effort, having the right nursery can reap big rewards for both you and your child. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Family life

Getting children to eat healthily and make the right food choices can be a tricky thing to do ❱ BY MELANIE FOSTER, MUNCHKINS KINDERGARTEN

Some research suggests that children as young as two years old hold food preferences based on their parents’ dietary choices. For this reason it makes sense for us as parents and care givers to model good, healthy habits as our young children grow. One suggestion that we find helpful at Munchkins, is to plan opportunities for our children to help in the preparation of some foods, using safe child friendly knives and utensils. Alongside this we talk about which foods can be eaten often, sometimes, and those that we eat as an occasional treat. We also like to use real fruit, vegetables, pasta etc. in our role and messy play areas, which allows children to taste and explore different foods in a non-threatening way. This gives them a chance to talk about their likes and dislikes as well as identifying preferred, healthy foods that can be used in future meals. Having a large garden is a bonus for us here at Munchkins, as the children are able to plant, grow, crop, cook and finally

“...it makes sense for us as parents and care givers to model good, healthy habits as our young children grow.” Children often take time to enjoy new tastes, so don’t be put off if at first your child rejects a new flavour. It is best not to force the issue but to try again at a later date as your child or baby will often change their opinion as taste buds develop. Most of all it is important to make eating together fun, and to enable positive memories of mealtimes that you and your children will treasure and pass onto their own families in the future.

eat what they have sown. As a ‘Healthy Award’ setting we make sure that we add a selection of fresh vegetables and fruit to our home cooked lunches and our parents are often very surprised at the variety their children will try.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed here in the Chapman household - now March is upon us, it won’t be long before spring follows suit. I’m no fan of winter with all its colds, snow and ice, although that’s not to say the warmer seasons don’t come with their own downfalls too. Although there’s lots to look forward to, including a certain someone’s second birthday just a few weeks away, lighter warmer days, also mean getting out and about more and I’m thinking about those inevitable theme park trips. I hate to admit it, but I’ve never been one for their thrills and spills, in fact, up until last year I’d never even been to Alton Towers. The place holds no appeal for me – if I’m honest, the waltzers are more than my poor stomach can handle! Peter and Nancy on the other

hand seem to thrive on them - the faster the better as far as their concerned! They may only be one and three, but I have a pair of little thrill seekers on my hands. I’m dreading it when they get a bit older and want to go on the proper big loop the loopers. Last summer during one of my braver moments I thought it would fun to take Nancy on a swinging pirate ship. My little lady didn’t seem too bothered by the whole thing, while I just felt sicker and sicker with every swing, to the extent I thought my breakfast was going to make an untimely re-appearance. It got so bad, I had to get the operator to stop it so we could get off on the pretence it was Nancy who was feeling unwell! Bad Mummy I hear you cry, and yes, you’d be right – but thankfully there were only two other people on board at the time! I think in future I’ll stick to standing at the bottom, holding the coats!

Just to round off this month we’d like to say a very big thank you to Boston reader Elaine, who kindly sent Nancy a giant batch of unwanted stickers after reading about her little addiction a few weeks ago. Needless to say they have now all been ‘stuck’ – thank you!

“I hate to admit it, but I’ve never been one for their thrills and spills, in fact, up until last year I’d never even been to Alton Towers.” SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Your Guide to

Wedding Ceremonies ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Getting married today offers more choice than ever before “If you are looking for a venue for a civil ceremony locally, then the newly refurbished Marquee Suite at Springfields Events & Conference Centre is certainly somewhere to consider.”

W

ith the average wedding in the UK costing over £18,000, making sure the day is perfect is a very important start to married life. We look at your options for the ceremony itself.

Types of Ceremony

Whilst there are many niche and non-traditional types of ceremony we are going to concentrate on the five most popular.

1n Religious Ceremony

The Church of England gives all British citizens, with no former partner still living, the right to get married in the parish church of the town where they are resident or in the church where either of the couple are on the church’s electoral roll. Couples can also get married in a church to which they have a strong family connection, either now or in the past. You don’t have to be regularly attending church, or have been baptised, to get married in the Church of England. If you want to be married in a church, you should first arrange to see the minister of the church in which you wish to marry. They will arrange to read your banns. The banns are the public announcement by the minister, during a normal church service, that two people wish to marry and an invitation to the congregation to declare any unlawful reason why they should not marry. Once the date is booked, your minister will ask you to both attend a meeting to discuss it and talk about the ceremonies available to you. The 1662 version, from the Book of Common Prayer, offers an option to exclude the promise to obey in the vows section. A rehearsal will normally take place during the week before the wedding day. All of the bridal party attend the rehearsal. The minister will run through the service, everyone will be shown where to stand before and during the service, and the rough timings will be finalised. If you want to get married in a church which is not your own, then contact the minister of that church well in advance and they will be able to advise you.

2n Register Office Ceremony

The difference between getting married in a church and in a register office is that the latter has no religious significance. This is the cheapest and fastest way to get married, the ceremony taking between only ten and twenty minutes, and is usually held in a room within a civic building. Getting married at a register office was once the option for divorcees, those with no religious beliefs or couples marrying someone from a different faith. However, thanks to the 1994 Marriage Act which allows civil ceremonies to take place at licensed venues, the register office has rapidly lost popularity and many 36 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

couples who choose to marry there want a simple, legal wedding. You can often personalise your wedding with music, poetry and flowers but any amends to the standard ceremony are at the discretion of the individual registrar and must be agreed to beforehand. You are legally entitled to marry at any register office in Wales and England, regardless of the area that you live in, although your notice of intention to marry must be given at the register office where each of you reside. Make an appointment to see the Superintendent registrar at your chosen office as soon as possible to set a date and obtain a licence. Your licence is valid for twelve months from the date of issue, although register offices do not take bookings more than three months in advance. The registrar will show you the marriage room when you ‘give notice’. Bear in mind that there can be as many as three ceremonies an hour taking place which is why you may not decorate the room or personalise your ceremony. As with any type of ceremony and venue, there are no rules about what a bride and groom should or should not wear, including choosing a veil and white dress. Most register offices allow video cameras during the ceremony but many will not permit photography during the ceremony (although are happy to allow photographs after the signing of the register if there is enough time).

3nCivil Ceremony

Like a register office ceremony, a civil wedding ceremony is a legally approved marriage ceremony that contains no religious aspects. Conducted by the Superintendent registrar or deputy, it can take place in a licensed venue after 8am and before 6pm, subject to staffing arrangements. If you are looking for a venue for a civil ceremony locally, then the newly refurbished Marquee Suite at Springfields Events & Conference Centre is certainly somewhere to consider. With its permanent cream coloured lining, chandelier lighting and wooden dance floor, the Marquee Suite provides all the ambience of a wedding marquee, but without the stress and worry of what the weather will be like for you and your guests on your special day. With seating for up to 200 guests, there is a menu choice to meet your budget, and the help and support of their in-house event and catering team, plus free parking and access to the Springfields Festival Gardens for those memorable photos. For more information please contact Susan Norton on 01775 713253 email events@springfields.net or visit our website www. springfieldsevents.co.uk

4nCivil Partnership A civil partnership is a legal marriage between couples that are gay or lesbian. Once a civil partnership occurs between these couples, they are entitled to receive similar treatment and benefits as that of any married couple.

The Civil Partnership Act (2004) states that it will not allow any form of religious activity to occur during the process of registering the union. The act does not include a ceremony, and any couple wishing to have a ceremony must contact the registration authority to find out what options are available. Couples are also required to bring a minimum of two people, who will serve as witnesses and are able to sign the registration documents. Many couples wish to follow the traditions of a civil marriage and seek to change their surname to that of either partner, or combine to make a double barrelled surname. This is allowed after the civil partnership is registered, but there is no requirement that either party change their name upon entering a civil partnership. To change your name you will need to follow the same steps as civil marriages.

5nCeremony Abroad If you choose to get married abroad make sure that your marriage is legally recognised. In most cases it will but legal and residency requirements do vary from country to country so it is always best to check. There would be nothing worse than arriving back home to find out that your marriage is not legally valid. It definitely pays to do your research right at the beginning and find out as much information as you can to avoid this situation arising. One of the easiest ways to cover all bases is to hire a wedding planner who either lives in the country you wish to marry in or is familiar with their requirements. This will ensure the correct procedures are followed. If you are planning to marry at a resort then many of these have in-house planners to assist you.

Business Focus

Joint Forces “Once I’d looked around I was all over it. The space, architecture and location were perfect and the search was over...”

Chambers hair design 1992.

C

hambers hair design opened on September 28th 1992 inside unit 4 Pied Calf Yard. It was a joint venture between Richard Denton, then 22, and Frank Martino, then 21. Having only worked together for 3 years and not long having left college the decision to set up shop was surprisingly not a difficult one. Rick comments; ‘The economy was beginning to recover from a tough recession, everyone was talking of ‘green shoots’ and there were lots of grants available. Most people remarked on how brave we were but the annual rent was just under 3k and it was going to cost us 12k to set up. We were never proud, the way we saw it was that if we failed we’d go travelling instead.’ The position was perfect, a constant stream of people meant that the business became noticed and a reputation began to build, Rick and Frank soon employed another team member and regularly attended development courses to keep up to date with current trends and new looks. It was the beginning of the celebrity era, people were wanting the Rachel from friends more than the Princess Di now. Chambers stocked products by ‘Sebastian’ and ‘TIGI’ who were leading the industry in education and the public were learning to create those salon styles at home by buying styling and finishing products straighteners etc... FRANK – It was an amazing time, the fashion and music industry were having an enormous impact on the way we were working, all the genres were moulding into one and it was fine to be into everything. We turned the radio off and started playing cd’s which introduced some of our older clients to the likes of Acid jazz and dance music, it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea but it evoked some brilliant debates. By 1999 the business needed bigger premises and so when Victoria street came on the market we bought it, we introduced beauty services upstairs and grew the team downstairs. We were enjoying a period of rapid growth, as the celebrity culture grew more popular the styles of Victoria Beckham, Kate Moss etc.. encouraged people to step out of there comfort zones, our walk past and retail trade was the best we had known and so by the mid 00’s we were looking to grow some more. As we had a lot of clients visiting us from the Bourne area we looked into buying a shop there and opening Chambers 2. We had our minds focused on growing the brand by taking a shop each, building the reputation with the view to franchising, but building and material prices were becoming ridiculous and we began to wonder if it was worth it. In 2009 we were given a heads up on the stunning ‘Kingston corner’ building becoming available. For Frank it was love at first sight ‘Once I’d looked around I

was all over it. The space, architecture and location were perfect and the search was over, the only problem now was, do we have 2 shops in the same town or do we move all of Chambers across? After much deliberation we decided to have both and take one each and so ‘Crown Affair Hair and Beauty was born. We always had the safety net of joining up again if the recession got too bad and through the next 2 years we were constantly in touch – golfing!’ Someone once said to us that when it comes to business there are 3 ships that don’t sail, Relationships, Friendships and Partnerships. We’ve proved that wrong, they will if there is trust, integrity and respect. These values carried us through the first 20 years and they will the next 20. Crown Affair hair and beauty is one of Spaldings most progressive salons boasting a wide variety of hair and beauty services, all under one roof. All our stylists are state registered with the hairdressing council and all our beauty therapists are all dermalogica skin experts and affiliated beauty guild members.

Mother’s Day

Celebrate Your Mother ❱ BY HAYLEY WILLERTON

I

Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring mothers and motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society

t is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in March or May. It complements Father’s Day, a similar celebration honoring fathers. The celebration of Mother’s Day began in the United States in the early 20th century; it is not related to the many celebrations of mothers and motherhood that have occurred throughout the world over thousands of years, such as the Greek cult to Cybele, the Roman festival of Hilaria, or the Christian Mothering Sunday celebration. Despite this, in some countries Mother’s Day has become synonymous with these older traditions. The modern holiday of Mother’s Day was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in Grafton, West Virginia. She then began a campaign to make “Mother’s Day” a recognized holiday in the United States. Although she was successful in 1914, she was already disappointed with its commercialisation by the 1920s. Jarvis’ holiday was adopted by other countries and it is now celebrated all over the world. In this tradition, each person offers a gift, card, or remembrance toward their mothers, grandmothers, and/ or maternal figure on mother’s day. Various observances honoring mothers existed in

42 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Cybele enthroned, with lion, cornucopia and Mural crown. Roman marble, c. 50 CE. Getty Museum.

“...the United States holiday was adopted by other countries and cultures, the date was changed to fit already existing celebrations honoring motherhood, such as Mothering Sunday in the UK...” America during the 1870s and the 1880s, but these never had resonance beyond the local level. Jarvis never mentioned Julia Ward Howe’s attempts in the 1870s to establish a “Mother’s Day for Peace”, nor any connection to the Protestant school celebrations that included “Children’s Day” amongst others. Neither did she mention the traditional festival of Mothering Sunday. Jarvis always said that the creation was hers alone. As the United States holiday was adopted by other countries and cultures, the date was changed to fit already existing celebrations honoring motherhood, such as Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom or, in Greece, the Orthodox celebration of the presentation of Jesus Christ to the temple (2 February of Julian Calendar). Both the secular and religious Mother Day are present in Greece. Mothering Sunday is often referred to as “Mother’s Day” even though it is an unrelated celebration. In some countries the date was changed to a date that was significant to the majority religion, such as Virgin Mary Day in Catholic countries. Other countries selected a date with historical significance. For example, Bolivia’s Mother’s Day is the date of a battle in which women participated. Ex-communist countries usually celebrated the socialist International Women’s Day instead of the more capitalist Mother’s Day. Some ex-communist countries, such as Russia, still follow this custom or simply celebrate both holidays, which is the custom in Ukraine. Kyrgyzstan has recently introduced Mother’s Day, but International Women’s Day remains a more widely popular holiday.

Wygate Park

AC ADEMY The Executive Headteacher of Wygate Park Academy reports that he is both thrilled and honoured to be given responsibility for the opening of a brand new primary school in Spalding

A

drian Reed heads The Boston Witham Academies Federation, a multi academy trust which brings together local schools, managed by local Lincolnshire teachers and professionals. The federation currently comprises a Children’s Centre, two primary academies and a mixed 11-18 academy. The multi academy trust, as an approved academy sponsor, now have well advanced plans for the opening of Wygate Park Academy in September 2014 in a new, purpose built £3m state of the art building on Estate Road, Wygate Park. The federation was selected as the preferred operator for the new academy by Lincolnshire County Council and approved by the Secretary of State for Education because of its proven track record of outstanding results and progress of children in the primary sector. Both primary schools within the federation are in the top 50 primary schools in England for Value Added and the progress of pupils. The federation has built a reputation for transformation, having taken Staniland Academy from Special Measures to Ofsted’s highest rating of outstanding in 2013. Staniland Academy was named the 5th most improved Primary School in the country from 2009-2012.

Applications for places now open.

In January 2014 The Boston Witham Academies Federation was delighted to announce the appointment of Mrs Annabel O’Connell to the post of Head of Wygate Park Academy. Mrs O’Connell was appointed due to her wealth of teaching and leadership experience. She is currently part of the Senior Leadership Team at Staniland Academy. Mrs O’Connell told Simply Spalding that “she is incredibly excited to be in the position of creating a brand new school for the Spalding Community”. Her first priority will be to engage with local providers, nurseries, parents and stake holders to help shape this school of the future. Executive Headteacher Adrian Reed said “Mrs O’Connell’s appointment has been of vital importance. As an outstanding practitioner and Key Stage 1 and Foundation specialist I know that children joining the new school in September will thrive under her leadership on a daily basis”. Home Project

Transform your kitchen ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

It’s the heart of the home - whether you’re enjoying a family meal, entertaining friends or grabbing a quick cuppa, it all happens in the kitchen

M

any of us spend more time in this room than anywhere else, which is why it’s so important to make sure it’s functional and easy to live in, as well as pleasing to the eye. Kitchen remodelling has been one of the most popular rennovation projects undertaken by home owners during the past few years. If you’re about to go down this road, there are a few things worth bearing in mind. • How much rennovation work will it take to achieve your dream kitchen? Will you be satisified with just changing the cupboard doors and giving the walls a lick of paint, or are you considering a complete overhaul, involving structural work? All of the above will be dictated by your budget, and the kind of style you want to go for. • If you’re going to project manage yourself, get quotes from reputable tradesman, preferably three each, from builders, kitchen fitters and plumbers to ensure you get the best price. • Set a realistic budget - and stick to it. The price of re-modelling your kitchen can cost as little or as much you want it to. Stock cabinets come in unlimited colours and finishes, while custom made ones will offer even more choice, although will be more expensive. • Think about practicalities as well as aesthetics. Leave wide enough walkways so you can manouevre the room easily once the units and any furniture is in place. • Then there’s the question of worktop space, plug points and where your appliances will go, as well as making sure you have enough storage space for food, crockery and pans. Even if your kitchen is small, there are plenty of savvy space saving devices on the market to enable you to fit in everything you want - from slimline dishwashers to drop down televisions. What kind of flooring will you choose? Laminated floor, tiles or wood? And then there’s worktop materials, blinds, light fittings and wall tiles to consider too. Do you want to fit a kitchen table or island feature in, or are you happier to have a smaller breakfast bar seating area? • And if you’re work is going to involve structural changes make sure it complies with building regulations. Remodelling your kitchen will undoubtedly involve upheaval - in some cases it may be easier to move out while the project is completed. Clear out the room fully before work starts as there will be plenty of

dust and dirt flying about. Because a kitchen rennovation is such a big project, be certain of your choices before pressing ahead - as it’s unlikely you’ll want to repeat such a costly and major rennovation for some time.

Business Focus

How healthy is your lawn? Now that spring is on the horizon it’s time to start thinking about the annual lawn care programme

I

t is widely accepted that by far the biggest problem we have in lawns is thatch.

What is thatch?

Thatch is a layer of dead roots and stems that form in the top layer of the soil. If this layer becomes too dense then it becomes a real problem for moisture and oxygen to penetrate to get where it’s needed. Indeed thatch itself is a waterproof barrier and levels of more than 12mm start to become an issue. If you want to do a thatch check then cut a small triangle of turf out taking as much soil as possible. You should be able to see where the thatch meets the soil (see photo) by pushing a knife into the soil laterally working up from the bottom. Where you start to feel resistance is where the layer starts.

How is it formed? As grass grows it regenerates itself by renewing its roots and stems as the old ones become redundant. These old roots and stems then form a dead and decaying organic layer that forms below the grass crowns and the soil. Normally the soils natural biology of bacteria and fungai will break this down and convert it into a usable plant food. In certain circumstances however the thatch can build up quicker than it can be broken down. This can be caused by using off the shelf fertilisers which contain lots of salts. These salts will have a detrimental effect on the soils biology killing the bacteria and fungai that we rely on to break down this thatch. They are also needed to convert any fertilisers applied to usable plant food. This is why sometimes you may feel that what you have applied has not worked as well as you had hoped. In such situations the lawn will begin to suffer because this layer is preventing air, water and nutrients from reaching the root zone. This can result in shallow rooting, drying out and becoming less resistant to disease. I have personally seen lawns where the thatch layer is so dense that only removal of the turf will eradicate the problem.

Solution It is vitally important to understand that in lawn care there can be no “one size fits all” policy. I have many customers in many areas where soil and grass types differ hugely. It therefore follows that what I use on one customer’s lawn may well not work so well on another’s. For the past 3 years I have been using products designed with the soils best interests in mind. No or low salt fertilisers are crucial, and by adding other soil stimulants we are seeing a real benefit in general lawn health. If I can be of any assistance to you and your lawn just give me a call.

After Lawn Feeding

“Call me to arrange your free, no obligation lawn survey and let me put life back into your soil.” lawn-doctor@btconnect.com

Healthy grass needs healthy living soil. In the past we have been too dependent on fertilisers which contain elements which damage the soils fragile eco system. Even high profile golf courses have not been immune from such damage, and are having to spend fortunes on renovation work. Too many salt based fertilisers, heavy use of ferrous sulphate (iron) have had a hand in creating this problem. Sadly it will continue because these products are still being sold both professionally and domestically. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Gardening Project

Add some colour to your garden ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

T

It’s time to start thinking about getting the garden in order again and bedding plants are the ideal place to start

hese colourful little fellas can be grown from seed or are available from all good garden centres as young plants and will give your outdoor space some great colour and character. As well as being available for the spring months, they can also be planted in summer and early autumn too, and are perfect for filling in those gaps between plants and shrubs that aren’t yet fully grown plus they’re ideal for transforming hanging baskets, containers, window boxes and troughs. Some popular spring bedding plant varieties include Begonias, Geraniums, Busy Lizzies and Petunias although there are many more to consider. Bedding plants are best suited to sunny or lightly shaded areas. Even though they only last for one season, they grow quickly and provide excellent value for money. Before buying your bedding plants, it’s a good idea to think about the colour schemes and plant combinations you would like to use. You’ll also have to consider things such as how big the plants will grow, and the patterns you want to achieve. Experts advise that when selecting you plants you choose the bushier, healthier looking ones rather than those which appear withered and / or have dry compost. Before you start planting, make sure your chosen area is weed free, and fork over the soil thoroughly. Start by digging a hole bigger than the root of the plant and water it. Carefully tap the plant out of its pot or tray, making sure you don’t disturb its roots in the process and gently push it into the hole. Firm the surrounding soil around it. Try and place any taller plants towards the back of your display and put the smaller ones at the front. Some bedding plants come in pots that are made from peat – these should be planted as well because you will find that the roots grow through them.

“Before buying your bedding plants, it’s a good idea to think about the colour schemes and plant combinations you would like to use.” Once you have planted all of your bedding plants, sprinkle them lightly with a general fertiliser and then water them well. Bedding plants that are to be grown in pots, containers or hanging baskets should be filled with potting compost combined with water-retentive gels and slow release pellets to keep them in tip top condition. To keep your plants blooming over a longer period of time, pick off any dead flowers as this encourages new buds. Also feed them every week or fortnight with a liquid fertiliser. Keep your plants free from weeds as these will steal vital nutrients away from them.

Motoring

feisty cars for the new ‘14 registration plates

Porsche Cayman

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY MOTORING JOURNALIST – TWEET TIM @CARWRITEUPS

On 1 March the 14 registration plates are available for all new cars

M

any of us secretly yearn for the latest plate because we like to show we’re driving what’s ‘up-to-the-minute’ in terms of automotive technology and style. They are also important for business as manufacturers tend to offer deals on cars with new plates, so it’s always worth considering when you’re buying a car. With that in mind, we’ve chosen four sexy sets of wheels that might whet your appetite for doing some sporty, executive-style motoring this year.

Porsche Cayman The third generation Cayman aims to set the class benchmark for driving performance. Its longer wheelbase and new chassis further enhances the credentials of the mid-engined sports coupe. Since its debut in 2005, the Cayman has earned a reputation as a significant driver’s car. For the latest model, the two-seater has been developed from the ground up and - after the 911 Carrera and Boxster roadster - is the third sports car model series from Porsche to feature lightweight body design. The German company offers two flat six ‘boxer’ engines in the Cayman, a 165 mph, 2.7-litre and a 176mph, 3.4-litre, which both combine ample shove with high power in the upper engine rev range. The latest Cayman employs a six-speed manual transmission and a Sport button as standard that lets you choose between sport-oriented tuning and that which is optimised for fuel efficiency. The model is priced from around £39,694.

“...M TwinPower Turbo technology allows the BMW to sprint from zero to 62mph in 4.2 seconds, then all the way to 155 mph.” New Range Rover

New Audi RS 5 Cabriolet Audi’s most exhilarating RS convertible to date is the RS 5 Cabriolet. Complementing the beauty and brawn of the RS 5 silhouette with a fast-acting lightweight fabric roof, the open-top offers the best environment in which to savour the hot-blooded 4.2-litre V8. The lightweight ‘acoustic hood’ offers sound absorption that runs its fixed head counterpart remarkably close, and at the press of a button opens and closes fully automatically in 15 seconds and 17 seconds respectively – even at speeds of up to 31mph. Not surprisingly the body benefits from the same subtle revisions that brought the RS 5 Coupe into line with new generation A5 models recently. In the Cabriolet, a subtle matt carbon fixed spoiler lip on the boot lid boosts downforce and, inside, the cabin includes a new flat-bottomed RS three-spoke steering wheel. The 4.2-litre V8 powers the Cabriolet from rest to 62mph in 4.9 seconds, and where possible can take it to 155mph. Base price is from around £70,154.

BMW M6 Gran Coupé

New Range Rover The new Range Rover takes the capabilities of the marque’s flagship to new heights, with greater luxury and improved handling on all terrains. The up-to-the-minute Range Rover has been introduced in 170 markets worldwide and is produced in a high-tech manufacturing facility at Solihull. While recognisable as a Range Rover, the SUV takes a step forward with a smoother and more streamlined profile. Behind the Name

Spalding Ramblers ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

What could be better than getting some fresh air and exercise while enjoying the beauty of the local countryside? “Some very close friendships have been formed within the group, at least one of which has ended in marriage!” Non-members are welcome to participate but will be invited to enrol in The Ramblers after completing two walks. Visit www. ramblers.org.uk for more information.

ell, that’s just what Spalding Ramblers have been doing since their group was formed back in June 1986. Members meet up twice a month on Sundays for walks of between six and ten miles long, all led by an experienced walker, while in the summer there’s a shorter, Wednesday evening walk to enjoy too. “Rambling is an excellent way of keeping fit and making new friends,” explained group member Judy Chapman. “As well as improving your health and fitness, you’ll also be doing your bit towards protecting our heritage of footpaths, bridle ways and green lanes. “Plus you get to see parts of the local area that you might not even know existed, and will be informed of snippets of the history of the area by the walk leader,” she added. Rambling is a reasonably inexpensive past-time - the main essentials being a good, comfortable pair of walking boots and waterproof clothing. Due to the high price of fuel Spalding Ramblers try to keep their walks within a 45-minute drive of Spalding. And for those who don’t have their own transport, car sharing is actively encouraged. “We stop for a lunch break midway through a walk,

so advise walkers to bring a packed lunch, and perhaps a flask of hot drink,” Judy added. “Rambling is not only about local walking, we also have walking holidays in the UK, in places such as the Isle of Wight, Isle of Mann, Staffordshire, Suffolk and Yorkshire, which are all very popular. “In June of each year we compete against other Lincolnshire ramblers groups for the honour of winning the Goodban Trophy, which is awarded to the team who scores the most points in a treasure hunt on foot.” The group is open to people from the wider area, as well as Spalding, and has a great social side. The anniversary of its first walk is celebrated by a short ramble and picnic each year, while Christmas is marked with a festive meal out. “Some very close friendships have been formed within the group, at least one of which has ended in marriage! “Many of those who took part in the first walk, which was in Bourne Woods, are still members today, some now well into their eighties!” Judy added. “And over the years the group has campaigned for, and contributed to the cost, of two bridges over drains in our area to link footpaths.” Spalding Ramblers programme of walks for 2014 is available from local libraries and the South Holland Centre, Spalding.

What’s hot in the world of beds?

f you haven’t bought a new bed for at least seven years, you could be missing out on all sorts of new improvements and comfort features. Your bed could have deteriorated by as much as 70% from its ‘new’ condition in that time! And from the latest sleekly upholstered divans to technical advances that are making hot beds a thing of the past, The Sleep Council says there’s never been a better time to buy a new bed. Here’s its guide to all the latest developments.

All action – or no action!

A new Gel-eration of beds

When you’re looking for a new bed, whatever catches your eye in terms of style, construction or clever features, make sure you do not to forget The Sleep Council’s basic rules for buying the right one for your comfort and support needs, too.

Gel is a new filling that is taking the bed market by storm. The new ground-breaking technology is known for its cooling thermo-regulating properties and the benefits it delivers such as breathability, pressure relief and body support.

It’s your choice!

Are you techno-mad or someone who prefers ‘au naturale’? Mattress construction is going both ways – latching on to high tech material like space-age memory foam and gel or reassuringly returning to all natural, even organic, cottons, wool, cashmere etc.

Divans on display

You might have thought the good old divan was on its way out; but they’re fighting back. Manufacturers are making full use of the gorgeous fabrics out there to upholster their bases and co-ordinate their headboards, which in turn have got higher and higher to make more of a statement. So whether you fancy opulent satins, crushed velvets, fashionable florals or even luxury leathers, you’ll no longer need to hide your base beneath a fussy valance – it’s meant to be seen!

There are beds with built-in flat screen TVs which glide gracefully up from the foot of the bed and ones with surround sound and iPod docking. Naturally, if you’re going to watch telly in bed you’ll need an electrically adjustable head rest; why not throw in an integral massage unit at the same time, for good measure? More good news, you can now buy mattresses which don’t need turning over – sprung ones as well as nonsprung.

And finally…

The Sleep Council’s Basic Rules 1) Set aside enough time. You can’t buy a good mattress in a hurry or if you’re tired or distracted – they will all feel wonderful! 2) Choose the correct support for your weight and build. A good mattress will gently support your body at all points and keep your spine in the same position as good standing posture. 3) Comfort is paramount. Whether you like firmer or softer cushioning, if you’ve got the core support the rest is up to you. A bed doesn’t have to be hard to be good for you. 4) If possible, try a selection of beds for comparison. Spend at least 10 minutes on each bed on your shortlist. 5) Lie down in your normal sleeping position and test out how easy it is to turn and to get in and out of bed. Wear comfortable clothing and remove any outdoor gear. 6) Shop together, if the bed’s for two. And consider separate mattresses or different tensions if there’s a big difference in height and weight. 7) Think big – larger beds are more comfortable. 8) You get what you pay for – both in product and service – so spend as much as you can afford. 9) Most warranties and guarantees protect against manufacturing defects – not gradual loss of comfort and support. 10) Look out for the NBF Approved label to be reassured that the mattress you’re buying is safe, clean and honest.

“Remember you’re going to spend over 20,000 hours on your bed during its seven year lifespan so it’s worth taking time and effort to make sure you make the right choice.”
