While my favourite season of the year is Spring, I do love Autumn as well. Living where we do we get to see the beauty of the leaves changing colour and we can still enjoy being outdoors until the first real frosts kick in! We also get to have the mother of all conker tournaments as we are not short of horse chestnut trees. Just leave all the talk of health and safety at the door! We start the month with the annual Spalding Pumpkin Festival on October 9th – if you are anywhere near town that day I recommend you go as it is a fun night out for the whole family and the fireworks are absolutely spectacular. You’ll find more details in the magazine, as well as a couple of pumpkin recipes! Moving forward and we end the month with Halloween which can be such a fun night. To help get the most of it we have some advice from the Spalding Police team to help everyone to enjoy it. There are also some handy hints about Bonfire Night too. Elsewhere in the magazine bulb experts Bakker give us their top tips for planting Spring bulbs in Autumn and we look a little further ahead to Christmas (there, I said it. In October!) and help you to plan your festivities. Enjoy the issue.

Personal Styling coffee morning at John Lewis in aid of Parkinson’s UK John Lewis Peterborough is hosting a coffee morning on Wednesday 30th September where their personal stylists in Womenswear will be showcasing the latest looks for Autumn/Winter 2015. Money raised from the coffee morning will go to John Lewis Peterborough’s Charity of the Year, Parkinson’s UK. The coffee morning will start from 10.30am and run through to midday. Tickets are priced at £5 and customers can purchase them in store by visiting the customer support department on the first floor from Monday 31st August. Paul Marsden, Head of Branch at John Lewis Peterborough said: “I am pleased that we can support our Charity of the Year in such an inventive way, it’s shaping up to be a really great event and we can’t wait”. Jill Normington, Vice Chair of the Peterborough Branch of Parkinson’s UK said: “We are delighted that John Lewis Peterborough has chosen the group as their Charity of the Year. We hope the Personal Styling Coffee Morning will give customers not only the chance of seeing the latest in fashion but the opportunity to learn more about this long term neurological condition.”
Work has been completed on 39 affordable homes in Long Sutton thanks to a partnership between developer Westleigh, L&H Homes and South Holland District Council. The scheme, called Marston Park, is Westleigh’s second phase of development on-site. Phase one, which was launched back in 2011, saw 40 properties built, including 32 affordable rent and eight shared ownership all of which are now occupied. Addressing the need for new housing in Lincolnshire, phase two will come as welcome news for people looking to find affordable properties. The development has seen 24 one, two and three-bedroom properties built which will be available for affordable rent, a further seven homes will be available for shared ownership through L&H Homes and the final eight properties, a mixture of two and three bedroom houses, will be available to buy. Phase two cost £4.2m with funding provided by L&H Homes and the Homes and Communities Agency. The homes are being managed by L&H Homes. Gary Turner, Head of Investment and Partnership at Westleigh, said: “We’re thrilled to have worked with our partner agencies to complete the second phase of this development which continues our commitment to providing high-quality affordable housing across the region for the benefit of local communities.

“There is a great sense of space within the site as several of the units overlook a large area of public land provided by us, which will be adopted and maintained by South Holland District Council. The land has been left free for local residents and their families to use and will feature a children’s play area.” Nick Worboys, Assistant Director (Development) at the Longhurst Group, added: “We have worked in partnership with Westleigh on several builds in the local area and it is great to be working with a builder who produces quality homes that meet the needs of our customers. “We look forward to enabling another successful project that provides affordable homes.” Christine Lawton, South Holland District Council’s portfolio holder for housing said: “We are committed to helping provide good quality affordable homes across the district and this development falls into that category. “We are delighted to see the homes completed following a successful partnership with Westleigh and the Longhurst Group.”

More businesses get top Food Hygiene Ratings More businesses in South Holland are achieving top ranked Food Hygiene Ratings. Latest figures show that 38 firms were awarded the top five star rating following the last round of inspections in February. And food lovers will also be pleased to learn that there are currently no businesses in the district with the lowest ranking of zero. The Food Hygiene Rating tells you about the hygiene standards in restaurants and other food businesses. It’s really easy to check. Just go online and visit the Food Standards Agency website: www.food.gov.uk/ratings or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker; if you can’t see one, just ask. Within South Holland there are currently (as of 30/07/15) 626 Food Premises that have been rated. All businesses (including those that only sell drinks) are able achieve the top rating of 5. Of the 626 rated premises:337 are rated 5 (increase of 38 since Feb 15) 161 are rated 4 (drop of 15 since Feb 15) 99 are rated 3 (drop of 25 since Feb 15)
16 are rated 2 (increase of 4 since Feb 15) 13 are rated 1 (increase of 1 since Feb 15) 0 are rated 0 (drop of 2 since Feb 15) (NB not all premises are required to be rated under the national rating scheme). The ratings are determined by local authority food safety officers and range from 0 to 5, with a 5 rating meaning very good food hygiene standards. The rating given by the officer shows how well the business is doing overall but also takes account of the element or elements most in need of improving and the level of risk to people’s health and the level of hygiene that these issues pose. Cllr Malcolm Chandler, portfolio holder for food safety, said: “The latest Food Hygiene Rating figures are extremely pleasing to see. “An increase of 38 businesses achieving the top rating demonstrates clearly the commitment that business owners are putting into ensuring good food hygiene regimes. “The latest figures mean that 95% of
businesses inspected are now ranked 3 or above and 54% have a five star ranking.” Cllr Chandler added: “We are encouraging and supporting all food businesses to achieve the top rating. We consider the protection of the public as the highest priority and will deal firmly with those businesses where there are breaches of compliance to essential standards. “I strongly recommend that members of the public use the ratings with confidence and enjoy meals out in establishments who show they care.”

an online survey which asks spectators, competitors and teams to provide information on their net spend on items such as food, accommodation and transport. Flooring 98% of those surveyed said they would return to Lincoln for similar events in the future, with 58% saying they had been inspired to take up cycling or cycle more often as result of visiting the Championships. Marc Rhodes, Marketing and Events Officer at Lincolnshire Sport, who conducted the survey said: “It was fantastic to have such a high profile sporting event taking place in Lincolnshire and we are delighted to be able to demonstrate the benefits of hosting such events for the local economy and tourism, as well as seeing that many people have been inspired Service Available to take up cycling.”
A study conducted by Lincolnshire Sport has shown that the National Road Race Championships raised over £2.25million for Lincolnshire’s economy. & The four day festival of cycling which attracted some of the world’s elite riders including Pete Kennaugh, Mark Cavendish, Lizzie Armitstead and Laura Trott brought an estimated 30,000 visitors to the county. The Championships, and supporting events, attracted visitors from all over the United Kingdom and even as far afield as the United States, increasing Lincolnshire’s reputation as a location for tourism and elite sport. Race Organiser, Ian Emmerson OBE said: “My thanks go to Lincolnshire Sport for conducting the survey. The resultant economic benefit to the area of £2.25 million shows what an event of this magnitude can bring to the county and is a fitting return for the support given to the championships by the local authorities and sponsors. The return also gained from the many hours of live television coverage and subsequent recorded transmissions is unmeasurable but was publicity for the county that would cost millions to buy. The ongoing benefits to the economy will also come from those visiting for the first time and returning in the future plus the health benefits coming from more wanting to take up cycling and other exercise.” For more information about cycling in Lincolnshire and to see the full report visit www. lincolnshiresport.com SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

What crimes do you want to see tackled? South Holland residents are being invited to have their say on crime in the district and what issues they would most like to see tackled. The East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership (ELCSP) is inviting residents to complete its latest community safety survey to help identify the issues that the group will focus on in 2016. The ELCSP is a statutory body comprising District (South Holland, Boston and East Lindsey) and County Councils, Police, Fire & Rescue, Probation and Health. The partnership is required to undertake an annual review of crime and community safety issues and produce a plan to outline how it will tackle crime and anti-social behaviour to make people feel safer. Those taking part in the latest survey will be in the running to win £30 worth of high street shopping vouchers. Cllr Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for community, said: “It’s vitally important that
we ask our community for their views on issues which affect their safety, this survey gives us the opportunity to ensure we are addressing our community’s needs.” Last year the partnership worked on issues residents identified through the survey including: Programmes to engage young people in positive activities and away from antisocial behaviour (such as Activate in South Holland). ‘Safezones’ in each district to educate
people about safe drinking levels, personal safety and deterring violence. Introducing a ‘voluntary code of conduct’ for off licenses in Spalding Town Centre to promote responsible management of alcohol sales. Operations Cyclone and Shout to tackle cycle thefts and shoplifting in Boston Town Centre. The ELCSP is now focussing on issues raised in last year’s survey including antisocial behaviour, violent crime, domestic abuse, alcohol misuse and theft. Your views this year will fine tune the crime-fighting priorities for 2016. The survey is available to complete online up until Friday, October 30, visit www. snapsurveys.com/wh/s.asp?k=143764102833 or www.sholland.gov.uk. If you would prefer to complete a paper copy, these can be obtained from the reception at South Holland District Council’s offices in Priory Road, Spalding.

At the time of writing this there were some truly great results from all our schools in South Holland in both ‘A’ levels and GCSE’s with very respectable percentages reaching A and A* and many proud young people and parents alike. Well done all! Our proud young people will now be moving on to the next step, whether that be ‘A’ level, Taking up an Apprenticeship or going to University. Part of my role as both a County Councillor and as the District Councillor with responsibilities for economic development is to ensure that the right advice is available to these young people to ensure their skills match what is needed by local, national and international businesses based in South Holland and across Lincolnshire. The Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership will by the time this has been published, endorsed the Skills Strategy 2015. This will ensure an integrated approach to training and delivery between Schools, Further Education Colleges and Universities, who will be better informed about the needs of business and industry, so that they can provide a careers service to match the needs. This will in turn help businesses to be more aware of the skills support in offer, reducing skills gaps in the market and allowing the local population to gain higher qualifications and with it higher paid jobs in what has often been seen as a low wage, low skill economy. Forecasting models have predicted that by 2022 businesses in Lincolnshire will need to fill around 200,000 jobs and that there will be a need for more highly skilled workers. A lot of these jobs will be replacing existing staff who will have retired, but know is the time to upskill the existing workforce and help our young people to gain experience and progress with higher qualifications and skills. The number of apprenticeships is on a steadily upward trend with 7% of 16-18year olds in South Holland
starting an apprenticeship which is higher than the national average. Most of these young people are 18 and so schools and colleges need to ensure that their young people are aware of the apprenticeship opportunities, so that they are able to make an informed decision when they reach the end of Year 11. There is and has for some time been a skills mismatch between the skills that people have and the jobs available, not matching those skills. As an example in South Holland the number of construction apprenticeships is low when housing growth ambition is high. Employers also tell us that applicants for jobs are often lacking in skills such as written skills, team working, good customer handling, communication skills and problem solving. Businesses also told the LEP that training for team leaders, supervisors, managers and leaders is required but not available, something that the LEP aim to resolve. The Greater Lincolnshire LEP skills strategy aims to boost the local economy and productivity by creating a local, higher skilled workforce, enabling local businesses to grow by recruiting our talented young people to become their employees of the future in a higher paid, higher skilled environment that our young people want to be a part of. With District and County Councils, Local Enterprise Partnerships, Schools, Colleges, Universities and businesses of all sizes working together, these aims can and will be achieved. To finish on a lighter note, but connected – Europe’s largest producer of pumpkins, David Bowman Pumpkins Ltd, will again be providing pumpkins for this year’s Pumpkin Festival on Friday, 9th October as a celebration of local horticulture and harvest. Live music, pumpkin parade and grand finale firework display – not to be missed!

Have a safe Halloween & Bonfire Night ❱ BY ANN GOSLYN, POLICE SUPPORT VOLUNTEER, SPALDING NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICING TEAM
It’s that time of year again, autumn is now upon us and the Neighbourhood Policing Teams are preparing their patrols for the upcoming Halloween and Bonfire Night festivities
T
he Neighbourhood Policing Teams have been working within schools across South Holland to give advice with regards to having a safe Halloween and Bonfire Night. We are again working with local shops to crack down on anti-social behaviour and disorder by asking them not to sell flour and eggs to people under the age of 18 during Halloween, along with the sale of fireworks (unless accompanied by an adult). With regards to Halloween, my advice is that when children come “trick or treating”, they should be

accompanied by their parent’s, stay within their neighbourhood and only go to the houses of people they know and which are clearly taking part themselves in the Halloween festivities. Do remember that not everybody in the community wishes to participate in “trick and treating” and that some people, particularly the vulnerable, can find it intimidating and distressing. When it comes to the trick part of “trick or treating”, there are no exemptions for this under the Criminal Damage Act, Public Order Act, or any Anti-Social Behaviour legislation. Historically, we see an increase in these crimes during Halloween and Bonfire Night, so if we have to deal with any of these, the penalty will not be a treat so please act responsibly. There is a “No trick or treat” poster available for any member of the community who does not want people to knock on their doorprinted in this edition. There is an increased demand on all of the emergency services at this time of the year as a result of firework and bonfire related incidents. The Neighbourhood Policing Teams have produced a quick poster guide to the more commonly enforced Fireworks legislation (designed to reduce the incidence of anti-social behaviour and accidents), again printed in this edition. Advice
Help with school costs ❱ BY LISA BARWELL
We use the word ‘parent’ to include both parents, or the pupil’s guardian, or another person who has parental responsibility for the child.
Who is eligible for financial help As a parent, you may be entitled to certain types of financial help, depending on your financial circumstances. In some circumstances, financial help will be dependent on whether your child is of compulsory school age. In other cases, it will depend on what type of school your child is attending, or where your child goes to school. Examples of financial help include: • free school meals • school milk • school clothing • school transport • visiting a pupil at a maintained special school.
Who may give financial help The following organisations may give financial help: • local education authorities • governing bodies/parents’ associations • charities.
Local education authority Local education authorities must give you written information about what help they give with education costs, the criteria for getting this help and how you can apply. The local education authority which covers the area where the pupil usually lives is responsible for helping with the costs of education.
Governing bodies/parents’ associations Governing bodies or parents’ associations
may give financial help. If they do, they will usually publicise this in the information they give to parents about the school. You can find out what help is available from the parents’ association or the head teacher.
Charities Some charities give grants to parents to help with the costs of education. These charities often have a limited amount of money to give and usually have very specific criteria which must be met in order to get a grant. Although the criteria vary widely, some common examples could be that parents live in a particular area or belong to a particular religion.
Who qualifies for free school transport In most cases, it’s up to the local education authority to decide what transport is necessary. Entitlement should be based on a child’s individual needs. The facts which the local education authority must take into account when making a decision include the age of the pupil, the nature of the available routes, how long the pupil has to wait for public transport and whether the pupil has particular medical or mobility needs. Your child will be automatically entitled to free transport if they: • are between five and 16 years old, and • attend the nearest suitable school, and • the school is further away than statutory walking distance. In England, if you get the maximum Working Tax Credit or your children are entitled to free school meals, they’ll get free school transport if they’re: • aged 8 to 11 and the school’s at least 2 miles away • aged 11 to 16 and the school’s 2 to 6
miles away - as long as there aren’t 3 or more suitable schools nearer to home • aged 11 to 16 and the school’s 2 to 15 miles away - if it’s their nearest school preferred on the grounds of religion or belief. You can get more information on school transport on the nidirect website at www. nidirect.org.uk.
How to apply for help You can apply for help whenever you think you may be eligible. However, if the help you are applying for is discretionary, the amount of money available for the year may be limited and you should apply early in the year if possible. If you have made a previous, unsuccessful application, you may become eligible if your circumstances change. The policies of local education authorities and governing bodies on how they provide discretionary help vary widely. However, it is against the law to discriminate against you because of your race, sex, sexuality, disability or religion when they draw up their policies.

Adult book choice Warriors of the Storm by Bernard Cornwell The new historical novel in Bernard Cornwell’s number one bestselling series on the making of England and the fate of his great hero, Uhtred of Bebbanburg. BBC2’s major Autumn 2015 TV show THE LAST KINGDOM is based on the first two books in the series. A fragile peace is about to be broken... King Alfred’s son Edward and formidable daughter, AEthelflaed, rule Wessex, Mercia and East Anglia. But all around the restless Northmen, eyeing the rich lands and wealthy churches, are mounting raids. Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the kingdoms’ greatest warrior, controls northern Mercia from the strongly fortified city of Chester. But forces are rising up against him. Northmen allied to the Irish, led by the fierce warrior Ragnall Ivarson, are soon joined by the Northumbrians, and their strength could prove overwhelming. Despite the gathering threat, both Edward and AEthelflaed are reluctant to move out of the safety of their fortifications. But with Uhtred’s own daughter married to Ivarson’s brother, who can be trusted? In the struggle between family and loyalty, between personal ambition and political commitment, there will be no easy path. But a man with a warrior’s courage may be able to find it. Such a man is Uhtred, and this may be his finest hour.

October Half Term
Making the most of the half term holiday Before it gets just too cold, head outside this half term armed with the National Trust’s “50 things to do before you are 11 ¾” list

ith mounting evidence that children are becoming increasingly disconnected from the outdoors, the National Trust decided to counter it by releasing a list of fifty adventures, nominated by children all over the country. The list challenges children to a wide variety of activities, some seasonal
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN and some year-round which you can do as a family. The best place to start is to register at www.nationaltrust.org.uk where you will find more details about the challenges as well as providing information of events they are putting on locally to help tick some things off the list. The 50 challenges are listed below and if you take a look you may find many things
that you did when you were a child and so you may find yourself reminiscing when you take your children out and they do the same. Obviously the October half term may not be the right time to be jumping into the sea or bringing up a butterfly however many of the events are suitable to be done year-round so get out there and get ticking those challenges off the list!!

Pets Corner
Firework Fright Night The 5th November (and New Year) can be a dreaded date on the pet owner’s calendar. Loud bangs and whistling noises from fireworks can be terrifying for some pets, whereas others will take it in their stride. Here are some tips to help you deal with your frightened animals, whether they’ve been upset by the noise for years, or if it’s their first Firework Night.
Distraction Techniques Make Some Noise Turn the TV up, put some music on, or create a noise that drowns out the banging of fireworks. Obviously you can’t do this all night, but it can cut down on stress throughout the evening. Food Diversions Try a stuffed Kong to distract your dog, hide treats around the room and let him have one every time a firework explodes. Give your cat a cat-nip toy, a big paper bag, or some crunchy cat treats.
“Your pet may just want to be left alone during the commotion, and you should respect that.” When you couple this with a loud television it can get them through the worst.
Keep Pets Indoors Keep your cats and dogs inside when there are fireworks. They may be startled and run into the road, or escape from your garden to find a safer spot. Provide a litter tray for your cat and put your dog on a lead for his night-time ablutions! Stay With Them If your pets are scared of the bangs and whizzes, stay with them or find a sitter if you need to go out. If you leave a frightened animal in your home you might be faced with some destruction when you return. Use Diffusers Try a pheromone scent diffuser to calm your pets. The scent is based on pheromones their mother would release in the early days of kitten or puppyhood. Diffusers for cats and dog are available.
Outside pets Make sure your outside pets are securely locked in their hutches. Wrap their hutch in a duvet to muffle noises, and

ensure they are not in the direct line of your neighbour’s bonfire. If necessary bring them indoors. Give your home bonfire a good poke before setting light to it, because they are perfect hedgehog nesting sites, especially if you have been building it up for a while. If you can, turn the pile over to double check.
Firework Dangers The 5th November or New Year can be dangerous for pets, so don’t let them near bonfires or any firework displays. Dogs are usually banned from public displays for good reason. Keep your wits about you when fireworks are scaring your pets because they may strike out under stress. Keep small children or strangers away, and pay attention to your pet’s body language. Your pet may just want to be left alone during the commotion, and you should respect that.

Choosing the Perfect Venue When planning your wedding, getting the venue right is crucial. It’s also likely to be one of your biggest expenses so getting it right is crucial “If you are tying the knot in your local church then your reception venue will not want to be too far away from that.”
A
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
s with all things wedding you will need to know how much money you have to spend on your venue. Depending on your choice you may wish to break it down further (some venues will provide a complete service while others just the hire). Work out how much you would like to spend and then see which venues fit that budget. If you find this to be a stumbling block early on then you might like to think a little differently – perhaps a smaller wedding at a grander venue (or vice versa!) or be a brave bride-to-be and have a few venues in mind and look for cancellations and late availability to save money. The amount of guests you wish to invite will have an impact on your venue choice as some of the more intimate venues will only hold 30-40 whereas larger hotels and manor houses will hold a few hundred. Always double check numbers when you initially contact the venue. Take the opportunity to look at the rooms available to you – if you are having around 50 guests to the wedding but 250 for your evening reception then you won’t want to be in the same room for the entire day!! The location can be dictated by where you are actually getting married. If you are tying the knot in your local church then your reception venue will not want to
22 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
be too far away from that. If you want to get married at the same place as your reception the venue will need to be licensed but you are not constrained to staying immediately around the place where you live. Your Wedding theme must match up with your venue so, for example, if you are looking for something rustic you might like a marquee or a barn whereas if glitz and glamour is your thing then a hotel or manor house might be right up your street. If your venue has a wedding planner service then use it to see how you can tie up your theme with your venue. Many people prefer to marry locally so that they remain close to family and friends however, if you are thinking about a civil ceremony then the whole country is at your disposal. Staying local allows your planning to feel a little easier as you know the area and aren’t too far away for visits. Weddings abroad are also growing in popularity and many venues have their own wedding planner who will take care of everything for you, as well as ensuring all the legal aspects are looked after. If you want something completely different then there are some unusual venues in the UK where you can hold your reception, including a treehouse in Scotland, the Natural History Museum, Battersea Power Station, the Shark Aquarium at Alton Towers, a Sub-terranean lake in Cornwall and the HMS President in London.

ooking after ourselves gets more important the older we get and we can sometimes overlook the role that relaxation can play in keeping us happy and healthy. Here we take a look at a physical version of relaxation, yoga, and a more passive form, massage. Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice or discipline which originated in India. There are a broad variety of schools but the most practiced here are Hatha yoga and Raja yoga. Practiced for thousands of years, but only recently introduced to the Western world, yoga is now a popular system of physical exercise as well as a spiritual and meditative tool. Today the physical postures of yoga are used to help alleviate health problems, reduce stress and help keep the back strong in a time when desk jobs make that a difficult task. The poses presented in yoga will stretch your muscles, tendons and connective tissue which means that over time you could see results which strengthen your core and limbs. The breathing techniques and meditative aspect can also be good for the mind as it can give you time to relax and focus. The NHS discusses the benefits of yoga at all ages for a wide range of conditions on their website www.nhs.uk mentioning that two
yoga sessions a week will go towards meeting guidelines on musclestrengthening activities. They also point out that you are never too old to start and indeed many people begin in their 70s to help them with balance, strength and help with conditions such as arthritis. Whilst books and DVDs are good it is always best to start with a class where an instructor can ensure that you are doing the moves correctly. If you are hoping to help a specific condition then speak to your instructor first to make sure they are familiar with the condition which will allow them to tailor your session. There are many reasons that people go for a massage, some to help with muscular conditions and some for the sheer relaxation element. There are lots of different types of massage so there will be one to suit the reason for your visit!! For people who play sports or work out regularly there is a sports massage designed to prevent sports injuries and treat them when they occur. For relaxation purposes the massage of choice is a Swedish massage which uses long strokes and deep circular movements. If you speak to anyone who regularly has a massage they will give you a wide variety of benefits to them and research is currently being carried out which looks at the benefits of using massage for anxiety, digestive disorders, fibromyalgia, headaches, nerve pain and joint pain.

Padma Yoga Studio
S
Spalding’s only dedicated yoga studio
ince 2005 Claire Thomas has been sharing her passion for yoga with the community around her. A qualified and experienced teacher, Claire taught in Northern Ireland before returning to her home town of Spalding in 2007. She ran classes in local halls and from a dedicated space at her home before moving to a beautiful light and airy space on Broad Street at the end of last year. The intention behind Padma Yoga has always been to share the message of yoga. Creating an environment where people can come together in a safe and supportive space with like minded individuals. Unlike many sports, yoga is not about being ‘the best’. It’s about ‘doing what you can do, to the best of your ability’. This is incredibly powerful as it encourages each student to enjoy their practice and get the most from the time on their mat. It also means that people who are less physically able are not excluded. People often think they need to attend a special class if they have a bad back or other health problem, whilst that can be the case, many health conditions can be accommodated within the appropriate level of a regular class. Classes Padma Yoga offers a range of day time and evening classes that run every week (school holidays included). This includes an introductory Yoga Basics course, Beginners, Improvers and Intermediate level classes along with Open Level Hatha. Weekly classes are a great way to improve strength and flexibility gradually. Encouraging you to work with your own natural limits and developing at a pace that works for you. There are times where you will be challenged but you have the space to decide how
much or how little to do! Classes include yogic breathing and deep relaxation practices which are a wonderful way to improve the way you breathe day to day and learn new skills for stressful situations. Our increasingly hectic lifestyle means it can be of great benefit to take time to slow down, lowering stress and anxiety levels and helping you to sleep better. Classes are open to men and women. Workshops & Courses At the weekends the studio runs workshops with guest tutors travelling from all over the country. In the coming months these include Yoga Cleansing, Hatha Yoga - Detoxing Body & Mind, Meditation & Mindfulness for Every Day Life, Yoga for Low Back Pain. If you’ve been thinking of trying meditation or are curious about the benefits of chanting mantra, the studio’s next Meditation Course starts in September. There is chanting and guided meditation practice on the last Friday evening of each month. Teachers Claire is joined at the studio by Helena Bingham and Ann Rodgers, both qualified and experienced teachers who bring great love, insight and understanding to their teachings.

Yoga Mamas In addition to regular classes Claire has also created ‘Yoga Mamas’ for expectant and new mothers. Teaching Birthlight Pregnancy Yoga classes from 14 weeks pregnant and Postnatal Yoga from 1-2 weeks after birth. The classes encourage women to maintain good health, prepare for labour and support recovery in the first postnatal year. Claire says “It’s such a pleasure being able to support women as they become mothers and navigate the change in their lifestyle and responsibilities. Classes are great fun and we develop such an amazing bond along the way. “

Spalding Pumpkin Festival 2015 Head into Spalding town centre on October 9 and join the festivities
N
ow firmly established in the town’s calendar, save the date in your diaries because the perfect reason to celebrate the onset of autumn is just around the corner – the annual Spalding Pumpkin Festival. This hugely popular event, which attracts thousands of people to the town centre, takes place on Friday, October 9. The event is sponsored by David Bowman Pumpkins Ltd and supported by the Rotary Club of Spalding and Welland, Spalding Lions, Crescent Traders and Tulip Radio. Organised by South Holland District Council’s Community Development Team, this year’s event will feature a variety of entertainment, a fancy dress competition and the enchanting pumpkin parade. Led by the pumpkin coach with the winner of the fancy dress competition on board, the parade starts in the Sheep Market at 6.30pm and will wind its way around the town centre streets before finishing in New Road. The climax of the night is a fireworks display from the top of the South Holland Centre. Before all of this though, there will be a charity market all day, street entertainment, activities and competitions throughout the day.

Christmas Parties
Organising the Party With the busiest venues booking up fast, it’s never too early to start planning the office Christmas party ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
W
hether there are half a dozen people in your office or over 100 organising the Christmas party can seem like a daunting task. As with any party though there is a tried and tested method of organising effectively that can be followed. Begin by setting the date – if you work in a large company you will be extremely lucky if you manage to find a date to suit everyone so if that’s not possible you will have to choose a date which the majority of people are able to attend. Before you send out a selection of dates have a little ask around to see which would be the most suitable. You will then have an idea of numbers. Also think about the day, the type of party you have planned might dictate whether it is a daytime or evening event but think mid-week or end of the week (especially if there’s going to be plenty of drinking involved). You will then need to determine your budget. Is the company paying, or each person paying an agreed amount or a little of both. Knowing how much money you have to work with will help you to decide on a venue. It may also help you to decide whether you can include partners. Whatever your budget make sure you leave a contingency over for any unforeseen costs. When it comes to a Christmas party many people prefer to choose a venue which will do everything for you, from food and drink to table decorations and entertainment. Once you have your shortlist be sure to visit the venues and get a feel for what a party there will be like. Ask to see the menus and enquire
about the drink selection. Find out what entertainment will be on offer (because if there is none you might have to factor some in). Traditional entertainment is usually music and games (and increasingly karaoke) but newer forms of entertainment such as a photo booth, casino tables and table entertainers such as magaicians are becoming popular. Be sure to book early to avoid disappointment and pay any deposits at the time of booking to secure your party. Once you have booked your venue send out an invitation to everyone so they will have all the details to hand – the date, time, venue etc should be on there. You could also include taxi numbers to help people get home at the end of the evening. Take the opportunity to distribute menus and get people to choose their food in advance. Make sure you take a copy of their menus or create a master list however as people will have forgotten their order by the time your party comes around, especially if you are working a long way in advance. Just before the day re-confirm all of the details and check final numbers. Make sure everyone knows the full itinerary – where they have to be and when, especially if you are having food at one venue and drinks at another. Check how your hosts prefer to receive the balance of their payment and then go ahead and enjoy your evening.
“Take the opportunity to distribute menus and get people to choose their food in advance. Make sure you take a copy of their menus or create a master list...”

Gardening
Planting Bulbs this Autumn Now is a great time to be planting your spring flowering bulbs. Adrian Nind, Managing Director at Bakker Spalding Garden Company, gives his five top tips for your Autumn gardening 1. Preparation is key The first step is to remove weeds and incorporate lots of compost or other organic matter when planting your bulbs. Bulbs grown in pots need good drainage so put plenty of pot shards in the bottom and use well-drained compost.
2. Select your bulbs early With so many stunning spring flowers to choose from, selecting your flower bulbs is something you should do at an early stage. A recent survey we conducted revealed that the favourite colour plants here in the UK are red (23.5%) followed by purple (17.6%). We’ve seen a great deal of interest in our wide variety of tulips this year, including the ‘Exquisit’ tulip which resembles a double peony and the ‘Tropical Wave’ tulip which has a fantastic double yellow goblet.
3. Have your bulbs delivered just before you intend to plant them Bulbs are sent directly from the nursery and are in optimum condition for planting. If you can’t plant them straight away, unpack the bulbs as soon as they arrive. Place them in a dry, dark place under 20°C and open the bags so that air can circulate.
4. Plant your bulbs correctly Bulbs have very particular planting requirements, and should be planted in holes three to four times as deep as the bulb itself. Plant your bulbs in groups of at least six to ensure optimum results, and if you are unsure on which way the bulb should go into the soil, plant the bulb on its side: its stem will find its own way up to the surface!
5. Don’t forget to prepare your bulbs for next year! We recommend feeding your tulip bulbs immediately after flowering – this gives the bulb time to store enough nutrients to ensure profuse flowering the following spring.
“Bulbs grown in pots need good drainage so put plenty of pot shards in the bottom and use well-drained compost.”

J
❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY
eep is celebrating its most fruitful year in Britain ever. It is a vital market for the company because we Brits buy more Cherokees than anywhere else in Europe or Africa. The American auto maker aims to echo this success in 2016. But how is it going to do it? Well, one way is to give the admired Cherokee line-up more ‘oomph’. So, that’s why the good-looking Jeep is now obtainable with 185hp and 200hp outputs. It offers an appreciably wider spread of pulling power from low revs, giving greater bang for your buck. But it isn’t just about enriched performance, the 2.2 Cherokee oil-burner now offers better fuel economy than the departing two-litre 170hp automatic lump. Available only with Jeep’s smooth changing nine-speed automatic gearbox, and paired to the company’s Active-Drive four-wheeldrive systems, the all new Cherokee 2.2 versions are inundated with equipment. The range now has more spec as standard, including an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, an automatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror with built-in microphone and an electric
36 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
tailgate. Perhaps more significantly, though, all Cherokees score highly with safety – achieving the maximum 5-stars in Euro NCAP’s tough tests. But back to the new engine under the bonnet. It is assembled for our market in the Pratola Serra plant, near Avellino, Italy. Armed with the 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I system, the Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp reaches a maximum speed of 127mph. It accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.5 seconds, has a typical combined fuel consumption figure of 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 150g/km. The Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp with Active Drive II and lowrange has a top speed of 126mph, 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds, and a combined fuel consumption of 46.3mpg, with 160g/km of CO2 emissions. Finally, Longitude and Longitude+ trim levels are provided with a 2.2 MultiJet II 185hp variant, in combination with 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I and the nine-speed automatic transmission. Prepared in this way, the Cherokee reaches a maximum speed of 125mph and gets from zero to 62mph in 8.8 seconds. Combined fuel economy and emissions are 49.5mpg and
150g/km. Behind the wheel of the quickest diesel – the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic with Active Drive I - I found everything rapid enough. Certainly, the more commanding motor is a real step-up from the unit it supersedes. You no longer have to work the engine like a dog to make spirited progress. It is even quite soothing when you’re not pushing the pace. Undeniably, one of the Cherokee’s fortes is its ride. For a midsized sport utility vehicle (SUV) with off-road know-how, the Cherokee handles adeptly. The only time you notice the Jeep get a little unsettled is if you throw it in to a bend. Then there is perceptible body roll. The new 2.2 MultiJet II engine certainly places the Jeep Cherokee towards the crest of the mid-size SUV class for pace, poise and proper efficiency. It is no BMW X3 but it brings the fight to the likes of Honda’s CR-V – and is sure to put the fabled motor manufacturer on track for even more success in the United Kingdom next year. The Jeep Cherokee range starts at £26,095 for the 2.0 MultiJet II 140hp Longitude FWD manual, rising to £37,995 for the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic.
