Welcome to the December issue Merry Christmas!
It is true what they say the older you get the faster time passes, I cannot believe we are fast approaching December and Christmas is upon us. This year is our first as a family of four and I have really struggled with gift ideas for our baby as she (or we are) certainly making the most of the ‘hand-me’downs’ from her big brother! As a family we are very traditional – a turkey and all the trimmings for lunch, a lazy afternoon with maybe a little walk, followed by a buffet dinner. There will be four generations in the house this year with my grandmother and then my children, I feel very fortunate to have this. This issue is full of festivities with our gift guide and a step by step food guide to see you through a stress free Christmas lunch. As the weather turns colder we also look at elderly care and how to keep children active through the winter months. Tim is test driving the Renault Koleos and we focus on Crowland. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and a very MERRY CHRISTMAS

Have your say on GP appointments in Lincolnshire Healthwatch Lincolnshire is one of 152 local Healthwatch groups set up by the Government as part of health reforms set out in the Health and Social Care Act in 2012. Its job is to ensure that the voice of patients, users and the public is at the heart of NHS and care services. Healthwatch Lincolnshire gathers patient views, represents those views to local NHS organisations and makes sure they are taken account of. Healthwatch Lincolnshire have been hearing for some time about the delays in people getting appointments at GP surgeries. To help us better understand what impact this may be having on patients health we are carrying out a survey to find out what people’s experiences are. We want to hear your experiences, to share those with us follow the link: https://www.surveymonkey. co.uk/r/hwlgp17 Alternatively you can share your experiences by contacting Healthwatch Lincolnshire on 01205 820892 or email info@healthwatchlincolnshire. co.uk
SHDC Re-Launch Website South Holland District Council’s website has been given a brand new look, making it even quicker and easier for users to find the information they are looking for. The re-vamped site launched on November 14 and can be accessed at www. sholland.gov.uk. The site is cloud-based and part of a collaboration between the authority, Breckland Council and East Lindsey District Council. It is built using the latest technology to work on all appliances and is especially designed for use on mobile devices,
reflecting a growing demand from residents to view the website whilst on the move. The website operates with a search bar and 20 quick link buttons allowing users to reach all content in one or two clicks without the need to resort to complicated drop down menus. Councillor Malcolm Chandler, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Transformation, said: “The new website will focus on providing improved opportunities for residents to engage with the council reducing the reliance on paper
form filling, or the need to phone or visit the council offices. “Importantly, it is more streamlined and user-friendly than our previous version, making it easier to report things to the council and get important feedback quickly. To reassure residents who do not have internet access, our current contact facilities will continue. “The new website is a further development of a continued process to progress our digital offering and part of our commitment to offer residents the right services, in the right time and right place.”
Then call the experts to find out how we can help to put a smile back on your face. 'We are passionate about helping you to hear better.' ❖ ❖ ❖

Lincolnshire celebrated in charity calendar
n, Calendar launch: LIVES and two of the calendar judges, Chris Strawso Rob Hammond, Lincs FM
Ringrose Law and DPS have produced a charity calendar which is for sale in aid of LIVES. Calendars will be sold to the general public and all proceeds will be going towards training and equipping lifesaving volunteer responders throughout Lincolnshire. Ringrose Law invited members of the public to take their camera and explore Lincolnshire, from the Wolds to the coast, the Humber to the Wash. This vast county provides us with a diverse mix of scenery, wildlife and architecture, and the calendar showcases the best images from the Love Your Lincolnshire Photo Competition in the 2018 Calendar. Alex Bennett, Marketing Manager at Ringrose Law; “This is the fourth year we have run the competition and every year the quality of the photographs just get better and better. Thanks you to everyone who entered and a big congratulations to all of the winners. This year we are delighted to be teaming up with LIVES and selling the calendar for the charity. We have supported LIVES for many years now and to work so closely with them on this project has been great. We hope to sell as many calendars as we can and raise lots of
DPS and
vital funds for this fantastic local charity.” Chris Strawson at DPS said: “ It been a pleasure putting together this calendar for our client Ringrose Law and helping to support LIVES. This isn’t the first project that we’ve work on that has involved LIVES, so we are well aware of what a great job they do, let’s hope that lots of calendars are sold are we can raise more vital funds for this fantastic local charity.” Nikki Silver said: “We’re incredibly grateful to Ringrose Law and DPS for producing a charity calendar for LIVES that celebrates what is great about Lincolnshire. LIVES is on track to help more than 21,000 people across the county this year, and therefore by buying the calendar the public are helping us to keep our responders on the road so that they can continue to be there for the people of Lincolnshire in their time of greatest time of need” The calendars can be purchased in any Ringrose Law Offices in Boston, Lincoln, Grantham, Sleaford, Spalding and Newark; DPS Office in Boston and LIVES office’s in Horncastle or online at lives.org.uk . The calendars will also be popping up at the many of the upcoming Christmas markets around the county.

Thunderclap campaign SHDC are launching a new campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of secondhand smoking, 12 months after they introduced a smoke free code warning of smoking near children. The new campaign is aimed at encouraging smokers to consider the health risks of others before lighting up. For example, did you know that secondhand smoking leads to an increased risk of strokes and heart disease, as well as ear and respiratory infections, particularly in children? It can also result in breathing problems in infants, children and adults. As part of the campaign, internet users will be encouraged to support an online ‘Thunderclap’ through our Facebook and Twitter accounts. It’s quick, easy and free – all you have to do is access is our Facebook, Twitter accounts and click on the link. Councillor Anthony Casson, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Protecion, said: “Pledging your support will only take a few seconds of your time. Go to our Facebook or Twitter account, follow the link and press the ‘support with Facebook/Twitter’ button on the Thunderclap page. It’s totally free of charge and you do not give any personal details away. “We are committed to developing safer and healthier communities and I’m confident that this campaign will help raise awareness about a serious health issue.” Once you’ve signed up to the Thunderclap campaign, Thunderclap will automatically publish a message supporting the campaign on your Facebook and Twitter profiles at 12pm on January 6 2018. The campaign will also see posters and flyers distributed across the district. For more information visit www. sholland.gov.uk. South Holland District Council’s Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/ SouthHollandDistrictCouncil/ and our Twitter account is @SHollandDC.

News Local Family Raise over £1000 for UK Sepsis Trust Each year local lady Marlene Loveridge and twin daughters Diane Tilley and Elaine Ladds hold a coffee morning in memory of their husband/father, Eric Loveridge who passed away in 2011 and each year they choose a charity that have helped out the family one way or another to which the raised funds are donated. This year they chose The UK Sepsis Trust after youngest daughter of Ian and Diane Tilley, Claire Matson fell ill with the life-threatening condition Sepsis following surgery whilst in hospital last summer. She received immediate medical attention and survived the illness known as the ‘silent killer’ claiming 37,000 lives in the UK each year. The UK Sepsis Trust work to raise awareness of the condition across the country.
The coffee morning was held at Diane and husband Ian’s bungalow and raised £676.58 on the day and Elaine raised £340 over the year doing craft days. The
Landlords Must be Energy Efficient Landlords in South Holland are being urged to be aware of new energy efficiency laws which are coming into effect next year. From April 2018 private nondomestic (and domestic) landlords must ensure that properties they rent reach at least an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E before granting a tenancy to new or existing tenants. From this date it will become unlawful to arrange new lets and lease renewals for energy inefficient properties; from 1st April 2020 the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards will also apply to existing tenancies. For most landlords this will mean that they will no longer be able to rent out a property with a rating of F or G after April 1st 2018, unless a formal exemption is registered. As such, landlords with properties in this EPC bracket should begin preparing now for April 1st. Cllr Christine Lawton, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio
Holder for Housing, said: “It is vitally important that landlords in the district are aware of these changes now because landlords who are found to be in breach of the regulations will face civil penalties of up to £4,000. “Our officers are on-hand to offer support to any landlords who need assistance and can give advice and tips on how to improve a property’s energy efficiency rating.” The responsibility for ensuring properties are compliant will fall to the landlord and Energy efficiency asset ratings of F and G will render properties unmarketable. Commercial landlords in need of need of support concerning the regulations can contact South Holland District Council’s Building Consultancy by calling 01775 764616 or by emailing rwilliams@sholland. gov.uk. Landlords of residential properties should contact South Holland District Council’s Housing Team on 01775 761161.

Look Before You Book With preparations for the festive season on the horizon, thoughts will soon be turning to finding the perfect place to celebrate. If you’re planning a special Christmas meal with work colleagues, family or friends we would urge you to ‘look before you book’ and check the Food Hygiene Rating of the venue you’re thinking about eating at first. The number of businesses with top-ranked Food Hygiene Ratings in South Holland remains at an all-time high, with latest figures showing the percentage of venues with 3 (satisfactory) 4 (good) and 5 (very good) ratings is 98.4 per cent, whilst there are still no businesses with the lowest ranking of zero. Despite the fact that food lovers have plenty of excellent options to choose from, we would like to remind people to look out for the ratings.
Councillor Anthony Casson, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Food, Health and Safety, said: “Our Food, Health and Safety Team works hard by continually monitoring standards across the district and offering advice and guidance on good hygiene practices. “A good food hygiene rating is something to be proud of. It matters to customers so we are encouraging all businesses in the district to display their rating and have a prosperous festive season.” To find a restaurant’s Food Hygiene Rating simply visit the Food Standards Agency website: www.food.gov.uk/ratings or if you’re out and about check for the green and black sticker which is usually on display in a front window or on a wall. If you can’t see one, just ask. More information on Food Hygiene Ratings can be found at www.food.gov.uk.

W
Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages
Nick’s Notes
ith Christmas looming and freezing conditions already upon us it is probably not a bad time to remind me people to be careful when out on the roads. Recent statistics from the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership show that 39 people were killed in road accidents in 2015, 59 in 2016 and 23 to the end of July this year. In 2017 there have been 285 people seriously injured. In 2016, over 10% of those were in South Holland. Casualties are more likely to be male than female, the largest proportion involves drivers, with statistically higher numbers from the 17-24 and over 60 age brackets, which is particularly relevant to South Holland. Surprisingly the majority of fatal casualties happened in fine weather without high winds. Motorcycle riders represent approximately 1% of all traffic in Lincolnshire but represented 31% of all fatal collisions so far in 2017. Some of the higher contributory factors include failing to look properly, loss of control, recklessness/ in a hurry, exceeding the speed limit, failure to judge the other persons path or speed and poor
turning / manoeuvring. With cold weather already upon us, gritting teams are out and about. They cover all the main A and B roads, routes to hospitals and most schools. One of those great facts is that if you joined all the salted routes together in a direct line you could travel from here to Turkey! Gritters will come out when the forecast drops below 5C and also interesting to know that when the temperature drops below -8 salt does not work. Should it snow this Christmas, snowploughs generally need an inch of snow before they can be effective at clearing it. So the advice as always is to be sensible, drive to the conditions and if you don’t have to go out when the weather turns nasty, stay at home and be safe and don’t drink and drive - one drink, one fatality is too many
Have a great Christmas!

Advice
Pest Control
Citizens Advice
...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems
There’s no legal definition of pests and vermin, but they’re generally thought to include rats, mice, cockroaches, ants, fleas, mites and bedbugs. Who’s responsible for dealing with infestations? Working out who’s responsible for dealing with an infestation depends on several things, including: • whether there’s anything about it in your tenancy agreement, or • whether your home was infested before you moved in, or • if the problem is being caused or made worse by disrepair, or • if something that you’ve done or haven’t done has led to the problem. It’s not always straightforward working out who’s responsible. An Environmental Health Officer might be able to identify the cause of an infestation, which in turn might help work out who’s responsible.
is responsible, then you can remind them of that term when you report the problem to them.
Does your tenancy agreement cover the problem? There may be an express term in your tenancy agreement which sets out who’s responsible for dealing with pests and vermin. Or it may say something like your landlord will keep the premises in a good and habitable state, which could mean they have to deal with infestations. If your tenancy agreement says that your landlord
Is the problem as a result of disrepair? If there’s disrepair in your home that’s either causing a problem with pests and vermin or is making a problem worse, it’s likely that your landlord is responsible for dealing with it as part of the repair work. For example, if there are holes in the walls and floors which are allowing rodents to get in, then your landlord would be responsible. This is because there’s a term implied into tenancy agreements which says that a landlord is responsible for keeping certain things in repair, including the structure and exterior of your home. If other repair problems that the landlord is responsible for lead to an infestation, they’re likely to be responsible under the tenancy agreement. However, they would only become responsible in these circumstances, when they know about the problem.
Was there a problem when you moved in? If you live in furnished rented accommodation and the problem with pests or vermin was there when you moved in, it’s likely that your landlord is responsible for dealing with it. This is because your landlord has a duty to ensure that your home is fit to be lived in on the day they let it to you. An infestation could mean that your landlord has not met this duty, but this only applies at the start of a tenancy and wouldn’t apply if a problem developed later on. This duty doesn’t apply if your home was let to you unfurnished.
Could you be responsible for dealing with the infestation? You might be responsible for dealing with the
problem if the infestation was caused by something that you did or failed to do. For example, if you haven’t disposed of rubbish properly and that has attracted rats, then you would have to deal with the problem. Can the local authority help? Local Tenants Local authority tenants In many cases, local authority tenants can contact their landlord to report a problem with pests or vermin and the authority will deal with it through their pest control service. Other Tenants The local authority has specific legal powers to take steps to ensure that its area is free from rats and mice. They must take action to destroy rats and mice on their own land and can serve a notice on an owner or an occupier ordering work to get rid of the problem. If you have a problem with rats or mice that are coming from someone else’s property, then the local authority may be able to take action using this power. The local authority also has other legal powers to deal with an infestation in your home. For example, where an infestation is harmful to your health or is a nuisance, then it may be a statutory nuisance. Where there’s a statutory nuisance, the local authority may be able to force your landlord to deal with the problem. Or if the infestation is a risk to your health or safety, it could be a hazard under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System. Local authorities have duties and powers to take action to deal with properties that have certain hazards. In some cases, a private landlord may decide to evict a tenant rather than do repair work. Make sure you know whether you’re at risk of eviction before taking action.

In 2016 we were successful in our bid to receive a grant from Tesco Bags of Help. As the applicants went public, we waited with baited breath to see what the outcome would be. We were up against two other worthy charities but the public got behind us and we received the most votes which meant the largest amount of money. By September 2016 the work was nearly finished. We had used this money to replace some much needed fencing around our environmental area, replaced the playground markings, including adding some new designs, installed a small outdoor stage with 6 toadstool seats and our biggest dream, a new trim trail. Being
Wisbech Grammar School Wisbech Grammar School have committed to ‘Walk all Over Cancer’ in support of World Cancer Day 2018 In a life-saving fundraising effort, pupils and staff at WGS are uniting in one incredible #actofunity for World Cancer Day 2018, 4 February. Mr Staley, Headmaster of Wisbech Grammar School, has signed up as the first school committed to supporting the North Cambridgeshire Fundraisers for Cancer Research in their new local project aimed at schools, clubs, and societies. Walk All over Cancer will be officially launched on the 30 October 2017. Sue Simmons, North Cambs Fundraising for Cancer Research UK Group said, “The concept of Walk all Over Cancer is simple. schools, clubs, and societies will be asked to get their pupils, staff and members to walk one mile for £1 in the week leading up to World Cancer Day on the 4 February 2018. With over 35,000 pupils in the area and a high number of clubs, it is hoped that many will join in with this project to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Monies raised will 12 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
all be donated to local research activity in Cambridge.” Every day around 11 young people in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. Despite improving survival rates, cancer is the leading cause of death in children, teenagers, and young adults. This simple fundraising effort will raise money to help beat cancer sooner, enhance the education of many young people and encourage them to undertake some physical fitness too! WGS pupils are passionate about fundraising, and their latest fundraising efforts saw the School hand over a cheque to Cancer Research UK for a staggering £2,896.20. The School generated funds by holding ‘Race at your Place’ on the 5 July 2017, where pupils from all years, staff, parents, and friends of Wisbech Grammar School donned on their running shoes and tutus and ran, jogged or walked 5k.
such a small school, we are so grateful to all the parents who support all our events and fundraising activities but we knew the trim trail would take us years to save up for. By January 2017, due to Tesco, our children were enjoying exploring the new features, using their imagination on the stage and playing snakes and ladders, to name just one new marking, on the playground. Now nearly one year on our fundraising continues, helping the children benefit from the best primary experience we can offer. We can’t thank Tesco enough for this opportunity and we would recommend other groups apply for it too - www.tesco.com/bagsofhelp
Spalding Parish C of E Day School On Friday 6th October, we were visited by the Patron of Reading, author Billy Bob Buttons. The excitement during the week built up as the Year 6 children prompted his visit to school and gave details of the books he would be bringing with him. The day was key in promoting one of the school’s key aims of ‘Reading for Pleasure’. Billy Bob Buttons has visited many schools across the UK on his book tour and enjoyed a full day of reading and writing workshops at Spalding Parish C of E Day School. He started by visiting the new intake in FS2 and sharing a story with them after registration. The children were thrilled to have a real life author read one of his books to them. Each year group from Y1 to Y6 participated in a writing workshop; they learnt top tips which they can now use in their own writing. Y5 and Y6 were captivated by a mystery suitcase Billy Bob Buttons brought in for their workshop full of clues about a character. After school, Billy Bob Buttons hosted a book signing for the children of the school to attend with their families. It was a fantastic day full of learning and excitement for reading and writing. The school look forward to Billy Bob Buttons visiting again after Term Break to open their brand new library.

It’s not a break-up, just a midlife crisis. But six months is a long time, with emotions running high and drama unfolding at an increasingly rapid rate, it’s almost enough to send Amy over the edge. When Hugh returns… If he returns, will he be the same man? Will she be the same woman? Because if Hugh can take a break from their marriage, so can Amy! Reviewed by Faye

Family life
Caring for the Elderly As close family or friends get older it can be very distressing for them and you to see them deteriorate and cope less and less with day to day activities and chores. Making the decision as a family to ask for help is an extremely difficult one, not only for the person needing help but for those around them too. So what are the options? Personal Alarms Having a personal alarm gives you independence and your family peace of mind. It offers help on hand 24 hours a day. Usually the alarm pendant can be worn around the neck or as a wrist band. When you press the red button, it connects 24 hours a day to our dedicated call centre. So if there is an emergency or you have a fall, you can get help quickly. The alarm works in the home or in the garden, leaving you free to get on with your life! Meals on wheels This service is for people aged 18 and over, normally older people, who are unable to prepare and cook one hot meal a day. This may be a permanent situation due to sight loss, a physical or learning disability, illness or a temporary situation such as recovering after a stay in hospital, to help you maintain your independence and quality of life. A Country Kitchen is a meals on wheels service that provides hot, healthy and nutritious food to your door every day. They already provide meals for Age UK and can provide them for people who need them in the Spalding and South Holland area. Their meals are cooked fresh on a daily basis using good local suppliers, please note the cost of preparing the food and delivering it to your home has to be covered. To contact them please call 01406 425242 6.30am - 11am or mobile: 07979 500162 anytime. Homecare If someone requires ongoing care but also
16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
desires to remain in the comfort of their own home, home care is a viable and acceptable solution. Home care solutions come in a variety of packages, using an assortment of tools. Identifying the exact homecare services you or your loved one need is the first step to finding the home care solutions that will work for your family. When it comes to at home care there are a variety of solutions available to meet the needs of patients with a variety of needs. Personal care might include helping the person bathe, wash them, or get dressed in the mornings. It might also include providing domestic services such as cleaning the house, washing the dishes, doing the laundry or lawn care. Cooking meals or even delivering meals are part of some home care solutions. Of course basic home health care may also be included as a part of the homecare services being provided. Homecare solutions are various because individual needs are various. Not everyone is suffering in the same way so not every home care solution fits every person. Home care nursing is also available should the patient need services beyond the basic necessities. This might include helping them manage their medications, and stay on a daily meal schedule. If there is a problem there is a likely a home care solution that will work. The best part is that with all homecare services come the added benefit of a patient who is happier and family members have peace of mind. Daycare Day care is a popular service offered to people who need some help with personal or practical care and are unable to get out and about by themselves. There are various day care options from a social ‘getting out’ meeting point to having somewhere that helps care for you. Day care is usually available in a resource centre, community
building or a residential home and offers more support than an ordinary day centre can provide. Professional caring staff can support you with personal care, such as going to the toilet, reminding you to take medication or help with washing or bathing. You may also be able to have a hot meal and drinks during the day and a chance to socialise and to take part in a number of leisure and craft activities. Care Home Often a move into a care home is suggested because of a crisis – maybe an illness or a fall – but it’s not always the only solution. Think about why you are considering a move to a care home. Is it mainly because other people advise it? Or do you really want to make the move? Your family and friends, or people such as your doctor or social worker, can help you work out what you want to do. But it is up to you to make the final decision about what is best. There are two main types of care home. Some offer accommodation and help with personal care – activities such as washing, dressing and going to the toilet. Others provide those services and also offer nursing care. There are also care homes for those who require extra care and support, often due to dementia. The Alzheimer’s Society can give advice to people with dementia and their carers and families about suitable homes. It also gives information on what to look for in a care home. Care homes are owned and run by local authorities, private companies or voluntary organisations. If you can’t find a care home that provides the sort of care you need, ask your local council to help. It has a responsibility to find a suitable home for anyone it has assessed as needing a care home place. Care homes have to make it very clear what level of care they provide and how they will meet each resident’s needs. They must not accept residents if they don’t have the staff and facilities to meet their needs. All care homes should be able to give you help with personal care if you need it – this could include washing, dressing and going to the toilet. If you are unable to leave your bed, or have any sort of medical condition or illness that requires frequent medical attention, you will probably need to look for a care home that provides nursing care. This type of home should have a qualified nurse on duty 24 hours a day and appropriate facilities such as hoists and specialist beds.

inter is often seen as the perfect time to focus on family and friends. It could be fun together or a simple chat over the phone – it all fills those wintry and cold evenings with laughter and warmth.
It’s also the season for thankfulness and reflection, and with the New Year around the corner, you might want to consider your own affairs. Thinking ahead to your funeral is another way of looking after your nearest and dearest. With a funeral plan, they’ll have peace of mind. That’s because when your funeral arrangements are entrusted to us, we make sure relatives have no more to worry about than necessary. We offer a personal and professional service from modern facilities in your area, and you’re welcome to pop in for a cup of tea and a chat. Our caring funeral colleagues can take you through all your requirements and a variety of personal touches. We can provide unique transport, from our own traditional vehicles to horsedrawn carriages and even a motorcycle-hearse. Music, readings and flowers or even the release of doves are some of the many other personal options available, and we employ memorial masons who can produce unique tributes. You’re guaranteed excellent value with us as there’s no middleman. Our colleagues organise and carry out funerals
themselves so you’ll have complete peace of mind. We’re also clear about the price we set. There are two different types of cost - the funeral director’s charges and the disbursements paid to third parties. The disbursements you include in a plan with us are fully covered, so once they’re paid, your loved ones won’t need to pay more at the time of the funeral as may be the case with most other plan providers. We’ve signed the Fair Funerals pledge to prove we’re committed to transparent pricing and helping people find a funeral that’s affordable. Our current funeral plan cost will change on 1st January 2018, but you can still visit your local Lincolnshire Co-op funeral branch now to secure this year’s price. And whatever is included in a funeral plan, we want to look after the person who needs it. That’s why we’re offering 10 per cent dividend to members on plans arranged between 18th November and 15th December. Visit your local Spalding Funeral Home on St John’s Road for a friendly chat or call on 01775 723199 to find out more.

Follow Your Dreams
Nigel and Louise Chapman and their son, Kian (8) put their lives in Spalding on hold to travel the world during a family gap period. After volunteering at family activity centres in the UK over the summer, the trio spent three weeks on the west coast of America and ten days in Japan. Here, Nigel updates Simply on the trip...

e’re in New Zealand now and I suppose the best compliment I can pay it is that we’ve postponed our onward flight to Australia in order to give us more time here. It’s such a beautiful country, dotted with mountains and green landscape, that we can forgive the roads for not being too cracky (or should that read being cracky?) Either way, we soon decided that four weeks wouldn’t be enough. That’s despite the three of us being cooped up in a small campervan! So we’ve ‘bought’ ourselves an extra fortnight here; we could regret losing those two weeks in Oz but as I write this overlooking a marina
in Wellington on a bright spring morning it’s a risk worth taking. We’ve enjoyed taking full advantage of the country’s terrain by bathing at every opportunity in hot pools and streams supplied with geothermally heated water. At Rotorua - a town with bubbling waters at every turn - you can even take a spade to the lakeside and dig your own personal hot pool! We began our stay on the North Island. After flying into Auckland, we immediately headed north to the Bay of Islands - an area comprising 150 undeveloped islands. We stopped for a couple of nights in Russell - a one-time capital in the mid-19th century, albeit for less than

a year. It initially prospered from an influx of traders and settlers but with that came drunken bawdiness and the tag of ‘hellhole’. Today, it’s a peaceful coastal town, still thriving on its links with the water. The size of catches displayed in the swordfish club’s trophy room was breathtaking. Back on the mainland at Paihia, we embarked on a 5km walk through forest and mangrove before picking up kayaks to take us within a stone’s throw of Haruru Falls and paddling back to the town. Waterfalls were to play a major part in an element of our trip which I’ll forever remember. I hadn’t abseiled since PGL
activity breaks while at Fleet Wood Lane Primary School more than 30 years ago. I was about to get reacquainted with it in spectacular fashion after returning south to the Coromandel Peninsula. The Sleeping God is a spectacular canyon and I had the chance to abseil, zipwire, jump and slide my way down 300 metres of it. The feeling of abseiling down a waterfall with the water gushing in my face was exhilarating and scary in equal measure. Oh, and there was a 10m high leap into a rockpool too! Much more laid back was our evening at Tamaki Maori Village. We heard about the history and culture of New Zealand’s first

Further south is Taupo, a town on the cusp of the second largest lake in the southern hemisphere, which is actually a volcanic crater and 200m at its deepest point. Here, Kian got to spend time in the town’s primary school. It was a marvellous experience for him to share stories of his trip with a class and see learning in a different culture. We’re road schooling him as well as we can and he’s enjoying learning about the countries we

elcome to my first column about all things baby! My name is Annette and I run (with lots of help from other lovely people) The Village Midwives. We offer a range of services and advice in all aspects of pregnancy, birth and beyond. When I don’t have my Village Midwives hat on, I am Mum to George, a larger than life 6 and half year old, a midwife, a smallholder, a crafter (fabric, I love fabric!) and a lover of nature. There’s nothing quite like the outdoors to reset your mind and body. Over the next few months we are going to explore all sorts of topics from fertility to pain relief in labour, to weaning and baby sleep problems. If there’s anything you would like me to cover please let us know what you want to read about! It’s almost Christmas and should you believe what was written, a very pregnant lady was travelling uncomfortably on a donkey, right about now. I’m certain that anyone who has been pregnant can empathise with being uncomfortable at one point or another, especially towards the end. Bits of your body ache that you didn’t even know existed! From one woman who remembers those aches and pains very well indeed, here are my tops 5 tips for looking after yourself when pregnant: Be kind to yourself – this applies to every stage of pregnancy and parenting, not just when you have a bump. There are going to be good days and bad days, and days that you just can’t manage to do what you did yesterday. You haven’t failed, you aren’t going to be a terrible parent – you just need to give yourself a break and know that you are about to birth a whole tiny new human. If your back is too sore to do the hoovering…the universe will be ok with that! Ask for help – help for the discomforts of pregnancy is widely available. Try something new; massage, chiropractic, acupuncture, herbal medicine…the sky is the
limit. This isn’t limited to the end of pregnancy. Nip things in the bud in the earlier weeks and you can save yourself a lot of heart (and back) ache. Google is your friend, but friends with word-of-mouth recommendations are better! Keep things simple – the more complicated you make things, the more anxious you are going to be over whether they have been done ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. Your baby won’t be forever scarred if your nursery furniture doesn’t all match, if you don’t own a Diaper Genie or a Perfect Prep machine. Babies need somewhere to sleep, something to wear, something to eat and Love. Lots and lots of Love. And maybe some nappies. Definitely nappies. Don’t ride on a donkey - Mary did a fabulous job but she had no choice. Taking the hard route physically or mentally when you don’t have to, is not going to do you any favours. Where ever possible, treat yourself well. Rest. Sleep. Nourish your body and baby. This doesn’t mean lie on the sofa for 9 months and consume your body weight in Maltesers, but neither should you push yourself to the limits of endurance. Find a balance. Find your village – you don’t wait to learn to ride a bicycle until you need it, and the same can be said for your Village. A Village is your Tribe. The people that are going to make your life better and easier once baby is here. This might be your family or friends, but it might not. Find out what your local services are, get savvy about breastfeeding support (believe me, when you need help at 2am you want to know who you’re ringing in advance!) and find women who can support you in a positive and nurturing way.
Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas Annette Xx

The best Christmas toys for 2017 are revealed by Queensgate’s tiny testers
H
undreds of toy testers rushed to Queensgate Shopping Centre to find this year’s ‘must have’ toys, and help Santa put together his top 10 toys for 2017. Argos, John Lewis, Game, Tiger, Menkind and Marks and Spencer all took part in the free event offering toys for children to play with, from remote controlled cars to virtual reality goggles; but which toys made it onto the top ten list? 235 testers and their parents completed Santa’s score sheet, which asked for a mark from 1 to 5 smiley faces for each toy tested. Over 1,880 marks were cast in total across 30 different toys during the two-day event, but only 10 could make the cut. Who are they? Top of the list and with the most marks is…. Game’s Nintendo Switch with Mario Kart. Children voted this the best toy by far with 745 points and
The Queensgate Shopping Centre Christmas Toy Testing list according to children in Peterborough is: was one of the best played with toys amongst boys and girls. The Nintendo Switch is £279.99 on its own or £319.99 with Mario Kart. “We’re really pleased with the Toy Testing event and the feedback we have had so far,” says interim Marketing Manager at Queensgate, Alice Watkinson. She adds: “This was a great chance for our retailers to bring out their best toys for the year, show them in action and let the children decide what they really want for Christmas. It’s good to see a mix of traditional and tech toys in top 10 plus a good range of prices for all of our shoppers.” Queensgate Shopping Centre now begins its countdown to Christmas, which included its Christmas Light Switch On, Santa’s Grotto, Black Friday weekend from 24 November, the Christmas Gift Wrap service, the Gift Tree and Westgate Arcade’s Elfie Selfie competition from 1 December

The specific timings that follow are those tested over the years in our house, but because lunch time will vary from one family to another you can adjust these timings to suit yourself. Crowland Trinity Bridge Trinity Bridge is a unique three-way stone arch bridge that stands at the heart of Crowland. While it once spanned the confluence of the River Welland and a tributary, the rivers have been re-routed and it now spans nothing significant. The current bridge dates to the 14th century (built between 1360 and 1390) and replaced previous wooden bridges. The earliest known mention of the bridge is by King Æthelbald of Mercia in 716. In 943 it was mentioned in a charter of Eadred. The bridge is now a scheduled monument and Grade I listed. The bridge is predominantly built from Barnack stone, which was quarried about 16 km to the west of Crowland, and presumably transported by boat on the Welland. This bridge has three stairways that converge at the top. Originally it spanned the River Welland and a tributary that flowed through the town, although the rivers have been re-routed and no longer flow anywhere near the bridge. The bridge was an unusual and economical solution to the crossing
Pic: By Thorvaldsson of two watercourses at their confluence, reducing the need for three separate brdges to a single structure with three abutments.
Dry Bridge in Zrenjanin, Serbia, is another example of a bridge no longer crossing water, but it is far larger.
Crowland Abbey
Pic: By Thorvaldsson
A monk named Guthlac came to what was then an island in the Fens to live the life of a hermit, and he dwelt at Croyland between 699 and 714. Following in Guthlac’s footsteps, a monastic community came into being here in the 8th century. Croyland Abbey was dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin, Saint Bartholomew and Saint Guthlac. In 1537, the abbot of Croyland wrote to Thomas Cromwell, sending him a gift of fish: “ryght mekely besechyng yow lordship favorablye to accepte the same fyshe, and to be gud and favorable lorde unto me and my pore house”. Despite these representations, the abbey was dissolved in 1539. The monastic buildings, including the chancel, transepts and crossing of the church appear to have been demolished fairly promptly but the nave and aisles had been used as the parish church and continued in that role. During the English Civil War the
remains of the abbey were fortified and garrisoned by Royalists in 1642 under governor Thomas Stiles. After a short siege it was taken by Parliamentarian forces under the command of Oliver Cromwell in May 1643 and this appears to have been when serious damage was done to the abbey’s structure. The nave roof fell in 1720, the main south wall was taken down in 1744. The north aisle of the nave was refurbished and remains in use as the parish church. The church contains a skull which is identified as the skull of the 9th century Abbot Theodore, who was killed at the altar by Vikings. The relic used to be on public view until it was stolen from its display case in 1982. The skull was returned anonymously in 1999. John Clare wrote a sonnet entitled ‘Crowland Abbey’, which was first published in The Literary Souvenir for 1828 and reprinted in his last book, The Rural Muse in 1835. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 27
Health & Beauty
Get the Kids Active
F
or children, the benefits of exercise can be viewed across three main stages of development; the early years, young children and adolescents. However, the early years may even be too late, as a recent study suggests that 20 minutes of exercise three times a week during pregnancy stimulates brain development in offspring. Regular physical activity during the early years provides immediate and long-term benefits for physical and psychological wellbeing. However it is difficult to overemphasise the importance of this time in a child’s life to influence future behaviours. There is a need to establish healthy patterns of behaviour during the early years to protect against possible health detriments in the future, even at this early stage. Excessive sedentary behaviour in the early years is associated with poor cognitive development as well as physiological problems. This is the first, but certainly not the last occasion where parental attitudes and motivations play an important role in fostering the earliest positive memories of activity – such as floor and water-based play and exploration. During Winter it can be easy to click the TV on and not get moving, but keeping ourselves and children active is important. Here are some ideas to keep children active during the colder months.
Have a dance party
Crank up the music and get moving. Move the furniture around so you have a large open space. March, stomp, twirl, jump, and hop. Get out some fun musical instruments. Join in and have fun!
Bring outdoor toys that keep kids active inside
Think jump ropes, balls, push toys, hula hoops, small toy cars, and even small portable sliding boards.
Exercise together
Do jumping jacks or push ups, run in place, or try sit ups
Play Simon Says
Make it as active as possible
Have an indoor snowball fight
Simply crumble up pieces of paper and FIGHT!
Did you know....
Get an indoor basketball hoop
• Physical activity during the early years and childhood are strong indicators of future behaviours including educational attainment, health and happiness
Go up and down the stairs
• The introduction of simple games during early childhood helps to improve co-ordination, confidence and instil a sense of achievement
One that is suitable for the age of your child if you have the space and don’t mind your little ones playing with balls inside
Children love to climb up and down the stairs! As long as you are right behind them, why not let them indulge in the stairs? It is a simple way to get a little activity.
Go on a bear hunt
Foster imaginative play and send your kids on a hunt around the house. Make it a bear hunt or have them hunt for another favourite animal. Make it even better and actually hide a bear or animal somewhere in the home and help them find it. 28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
• Sedentary baehaviour can lead to an increase in social and emotional health concerns • Most literature has to this point focussed on schoolbased activity and interventions • Parents’ attitudes to physical activity – even before children start school – can make a big impact on a child’s future perception of exercise

Honeypot Day Nursery & Pre-school
J
ust over 10 years ago, the local authority built a new school building for Weston Hills C of E Primary School and little did I know that when leaving the old school, my passing comment of ‘This building would make a good nursery and preschool’ would result in actually doing it. There have been up and downs along the way, but many more ‘ups’ than ‘downs! After a protracted purchase period, we finally owned the building and, with 4 members of staff and eight children, opened our doors in April 2008. Honeypot Day Nursery and Pre-school now has approximately 75 under 5’s on roll, together with 47 school children who attend various out of school sessions and 16 members of staff. As parents ourselves, we recognise the importance of providing high quality, affordable childcare in a local community. Our primary aims are: • To provide the highest quality standards in care and development through the creation of a warm, caring and stimulating environment. • To provide the best opportunity for each child to develop socially, physically, emotionally and educationally at their own rate as individuals. • To maintain close working relationships with parents, ensuring we work in partnership with the child’s best interests at the heart of everything we do. • To ensure children leave Honeypot with the necessary skills for the next step in their life as they start school. • For everyone to feel happy, safe and valued. We recognise that sending a child to Honeypot is usually the child’s first experience of care and education outside of the home and we aim to make it a happy and memorable one. We maintain records of every child’s achievements at the nursery, which are available for parents to access on-line with many, many pictures. Parents can contribute to this record and it therefore develops into a learning journey covering the whole period the child is with us, for parents to keep when the child leaves. Our staff are well qualified with a variety of qualifications from EYPS to Level
3. We usually take apprentices who will all be working towards achieving a level 3 qualification. We feel passionate about our role and expect high standards from each and every one of our team. The staff team is fabulous and many staff are also parents themselves. Children need to play, and we plan learning opportunities that are both fun and stimulating, aiming to develop enquiring minds. Children enjoy a variety of activities, both indoors and out – in all weathers! They may come home with works of art for the fridge, a beautiful building (from cardboard boxes) or cakes. Sometimes they come home with nothing, but they will have had a great time and developed new skills from the things they have done. We have a lot of singing and movement and during the summer we encourage parents to join us for ‘sports day’ – I use the term loosely! We have trips out, Christmas parties, visitors in (police, reptiles, ceramic painting) graduations, leavers and parents’ parties. Honeypot Day Nursery takes funded
children from 2 years old, where parents meet government set criteria. All 3 and 4 year old children can receive funded care for up to 15 hours per week during the school term (or a lower number stretched over the year) from the term after they turn 3. From September 2017, 3 and 4 year olds with working parents, may be entitled to receive a further 15 hours per week – taking the total to 30. We are happy to show you around our nursery, and talk to you about your childcare needs. For more information call: 01406 380803, email: office@ honeypotdaynursery.com or see our website www.honeypotdaynursery.com

Tastes so good... Reindeer Marshmallows Ingredients
Method:
Large Marshmallows Pretzels (for Antlers)
1. Line a large board with greaseproof paper. 2. Melt the chocolate – ask an adult to help - and leave to cool slightly 3. Dip each marshmallow into the melted chocolate covering the base and edges. Place on greaseproof paper and leave in fridge to set. 4. Take out the fridge and turn upside down, add a drop of melted chocolate to base of every marshmallow and add two pretzels to either side to make antlers. 5. Flip them back over and return to fridge to set, meanwhile make small icing eyes. 6. Add the eyes and a sweetie red nose using a drop of melted chocolate and return to fridge to set. Thread string around antlers and hang from the tree – irresistible!
Small Red candy sweets Ready to roll white and black icing 100g milk chocolate (Need to add string to hook to Christmas Tree)
Peppermint Cream Sweets Delicious, minty sweets that are perfect served after dinner or as an indulgent treat. Can be kept in the fridge if there are any left after serving!
Ingredients
Method:
1.5 cups of coconut oil
1. Whip the solid coconut oil, honey and peppermint essential oil together with a hand mixer. The whipped filling will be white and fluffy when it’s ready. 2. Put the whole bowl into the fridge for about 10 minutes. Use a small teaspoon to take a portion of the mixture and pop them into a silicon mould. Alternatively, just shape them with your hand as best as you can! If you’re not using a mould then place the creams onto parchment paper and put them into the freezer. 3. In a small saucepan gently melt the chocolate over a low heat. Take the sweets out of the freezer. 4. Use a wooden skewer to dip each piece into the melted chocolate. Place onto the parchment paper again and put them back into the freezer until hardened. Best served at room temperature.
0.25 cups of honey 3 drops peppermint oil 1 cup dark or semisweet chocolate (melted)

Choosing
Your Tree! With just a few weeks left until Christmas, it’s time to start thinking about decorating the house – and choosing your perfect Christmas tree.
W
hen it comes to finding the right one, the first thing is decide whether you’re going to have either a real or fake tree. Although there’s nothing like the smell and look of a real fir or spruce in the house, it’s worth considering an artificial tree. Designs have come on in leaps and bounds in recent years, with many versions now looking just like the real thing. In addition a fake tree won’t drop needles all over your carpet, it won’t need watering or caring for, plus if you’ve got children or pets it might be a safer alternative. And, in the long run, you’ll only have to pay once and will be able to use the same tree year after year. However, if you’re adamant it’s got to be real, there are several things to remember when choosing one. Size – make sure you don’t pick a tree that is too big / tall for the space you have. Type – Fir trees are the most popular variety as they tend to hang on to their needles longer, as opposed to the Norwegian spruce, which dries out quicker. Care – The better you look after your tree the longer it will last. Do you want a cut or rooted one? Most people opt for a cut
tree as their gardens won’t accommodate a rooted tree after Christmas. Once you take it home, try to acclimatise your tree to its new surroundings by putting it in a shed or garage for a day or so, to allow it to warm up gradually. If it’s a cut tree, saw a couple of centimetres off the base – this will enable it to draw up water more easily. Put it in a stand with a solid base, where you can add water and make sure it’s not near a direct heat source. And now you’ve chosen your tree, the fun really begins – it’s time to decorate it. * Make it a real family affair and get everyone involved * Add the lights first – make sure they work before you put them on * Now add the decorations. Think about your colour scheme beforehand. Will you have a theme or use certain coloured baubles? Will they be hand-made or family heirlooms? * Hang your baubles according to size, starting with the largest at the bottom, with droplet shaped ones on the branch ends, and your more treasured, fragile ones towards the top of the tree. * Finally add your finishing touches – tinsel or ribbon around the tree and a star or angel on top.

Renault Koleos 2017 PROS ‘N’ CONS à Comfortable à Refined à Commanding à Off-Road Ability à Insipid Looks
T
he Renault Koleos won’t rock your world, but it’s a decent enough SUV. It looks a bit too like many other SUVs out there – most noticeably the Skoda Kodiaq, but it’s an impressive car, nonetheless. I got behind the wheel of the flagship trim level – the Signature Nav, which has a generous amount of Kit, comprising big 19-inch alloy wheels, a sat-nav, a touchscreen and leather-bound seats. The car’s infotainment system, accessed via the touchscreen is easy and self-explanatory to use, and the Renault is practical, offering cubby holes and four USB slots. What’s more, the Koleos is endowed with good quality soft-touch plastics and the hide wrapping the seats and steering wheel is top notch. The top-of-the-tree 2.0 dCi 175 AWD X-Tronic Koleos I drove really is the bee’sknees, in terms of out-and-out technology and cabin refinement. The layout is well thought out for driver and passengers, and room is more than respectable. The wheelbase is the same as the X-Trail’s at 2,705mm – and this equates to awesome legroom. Better still, the Koleos’ load area is 29 litres bigger than the Nissan’s – measuring 579 litres. Alas, take a tape-measure to the similar-looking Skoda Kodiaq and the Czech-made car’s boot is 630 litres. Oh well, you can’t have everything. Strangely the Gallic car brand isn’t providing the Koleos with a seven-seat option, though. This could be a deal-breaker as Skoda’s Kodiaq does. Renault gets away with it, however, by explaining that you can always go for the Grand Scenic if you need all those seats. On the road, the Renault Koleos is wellbehaved and easy to like. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.5 seconds and the top speed is 125mph, so the car has plenty of ‘go’ for motorway commutes or for overtakes on lesser roads. The Koleos has 174 horses

FAST FACTS ((2.0 dCi 175 AWD X-Tronic 2017 - as tested ) under its ample bonnet to provide such power, and this helps tug the car along, even with fiveup and a fully laden boot. The auto ‘box isn’t bad, even though it’s a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This means the transmission shifts through a constant range of ratios. Alas, CVTs don’t always work as seamlessly as they should, resulting in a rather jerky driving experience. Nevertheless, I’m pleased to report Renault has stuck an advanced CVT into the Koleos that uses technology to copy a sequential ‘box. This makes the car painless to operate. The Koleos’ ride is super comfy, with its soft suspension making you all but forget the existence of potholes. But the squidgy springs don’t wreck the handling; if anything, the French SUV comes across as predictable and steady. The Koleos I drove had all-wheeldrive, so I also tested it off-road. Because the car has good ground clearance I could drive it over stones and hummocks without fear of ripping bits off the underneath of the Koleos. Furthermore, the Renault grips well in mud and anything not resembling tarmac. It’s no Land Rover, but it’s a great asset to have if you live in the sticks, or you plan on lugging a tin-tent to a grassy

caravan park or suchlike. The Koleos is a car that is roomy and wellappointed. It also flies the luxury SUV flag for Renault. This means it could attract fresh customers to the brand who are looking for an SUV with a bit of French flair. First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups
