Welcome to the April issue 10 Years On!

This issue is a huge milestone for Simply Magazines as it is our tenth anniversary issue. I have to be honest and say when I started out, in my spare bedroom, I didn’t know where this journey would take me. There have definitely been some highs and lows along the way but I have to say I am fortunate to love what I do and going to work! From, me, on my own and a designer in the early days we now have offices, a team of almost twenty working on and delivering the magazine. I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to staff past and present who have brought us to this point, it really has been so much fun and I have learned so much. I must also mention our wonderful advertisers, who without them, the magazine simply wouldn’t exist, so please try to support local businesses, when you can. Hopefully you are all still enjoying receiving the magazine each month? I am pleased to say that in those 10 years we have over doubled the number of copies we print from 10,000 back in 2008 to now distributing a whopping 26,500 every month! As they say, time flies when you’re having fun and the last 10 years seem to have passed in the blink of an eye. So, we will be raising a glass or two to celebrate and here’s to hopefully another 10! Double celebration for local business dedicated to championing consumers When it comes to looking for a recommended and reliable tradesperson – there is one local business that has been championing consumers for a decade. For the past 10 years, the Safe Local Trades online service has been providing thousands of customers within the PE area with easy access to reliable and reputable tradesmen. And in a double celebration, Safe Local Trades director Eileen Le Voi has launched a sister company – Safe Local Services; which received its official unveiling at a recent special celebration for SLT / SLS members, attended by Peterborough Mayor, Cllr John Fox. Kama’s Cave Need Your Help! Just before Christmas we had 5 dogs returned to the kennels; due to an owners sudden illness and another’s unforeseen change of circumstances and we are already bursting! We were already full, had holiday dogs booked in and at one of our dogs, Tiny Tim, in a kennel on his own. Ann also has 8 dogs indoors so thereis no room there, which is usually a back up. With so many dogs at the kennels we had to turn the storage cupboard next to the kitchen into a spare kennel! We have also worked out that we can

create a further kennel in the foyer. For the safety and security of the dogs we had to arrange for the changes to be made permanent which will end up costing in the region of £900. We have raised just over £500 towards these costs through donations from our supporters when we posted details on our Facebook page. If anyone has £1 to spare to help us cover the cost of creating the additional kennel space please donate to the kennels PayPal account which is ann@kamascave.com

Australian Star to walk the Boards in Lincoln Join the New Theatre Royal Lincoln for an Evening with Peter Andre. Audiences will get to ask him questions and hear him speak freely. Peter will be interviewed unscripted and will discuss current unseen photos. Natalie Hayes Cowley, Artistic Director at the Theatre explains “We are delighted to welcome such a big star to the theatre. incolnshire County Council has just recently set its budget and agreed the council tax for the years 2018/19. In the past we have been heavily reliant on our main grant from central government, known as the Revenue Support Grant, which will fall by a further £14m in each of the next two years. By 2019, we expect it to be just £20m in total, compared with £211m at the start of the decade - a massive 90% drop in funding. The idea is that this grant over time is replaced by allowing councils to retain all of our locally collected business rates, most of which is currently handed on to central government. Greater Lincolnshire have been successful in lobbying to become a pilot area to trial retaining 100% of our business rates in the coming financial year, which will earn LCC in the region of £7.5m (£20m for the whole of Greater Lincolnshire which includes all the District Councils). This is not guaranteed for future years and could be reduced to retaining 75% in the future. Clearly there will need to be some levelling out of funding as business rates on their own will not be nearly enough, so we will continue to find savings, but will be protecting high priority areas such as adult and child safeguarding, roads, flood risk management, stronger communities and fire and rescue. In other areas, we intend to find savings of £34m over the next two years, on top of the £290m already achieved since 2011. Most of the new savings will result from difficult decisions this council has already taken, showing the importance of facing challenges head on. In addition to achieving more savings, there are unavoidable cost pressures of about £52m particularly acute in adult care as our population ages, and as we fund the National Living Wage with no extra government support. There’s also uncertainty about the long-term future of the Better Care Fund, an important element of our budget along with home-to-school transport,

anticipated staff pay rises, waste disposal charges and general inflation which are all contributing to rising costs. To help with these pressures, the final settlement two weeks ago awarded us an extra £2.1m to support sustainable adult care markets in the coming year, plus £1.4m for rural services. We’ve also been given an extra £1.7m from this year’s Pothole Action Fund - enough to tackle an extra 30,000 defects on our roads. With the ‘beast from the east’ giving us a real bashing at the beginning of March, that pothole money will barely touch the sides. Lincolnshire County Council will spend £455m on services in 2018/19, and just slightly less the following year. Those services will improve the lives of almost every one of Lincolnshire’s 736,000 residents, from the very young to the very old. Many people ask, what do I get for my council tax - well this includes money for adult social care, children’s centres and schools, transport, promotion of economic growth and jobs, maintaining and developing our huge road network and providing heritage attractions and libraries as well as our priorities mentioned earlier. In the coming year we will be making £9m available for highways maintenance and environmental schemes around the county. We’ll also support the most vulnerable in our society, especially older people, and enhance public safety through fire and rescue and flood risk management. To ensure the sustainability of our finances, we’ve therefore proposing a rise of 2.95%, plus the additional 2% precept for adult care. The total 4.95% increase would mean an extra £1.12 per week for an average Band D property, or 74p for Lincolnshire’s many Band A households. Even with this rise, we’re still expected to have the third lowest council tax of all 27 English shire counties.

Managing someone else’s affairs Managing someone else’s affairs can mean a number of things, including: •looking after their bank accounts, savings, investments or other financial affairs •buying and selling property on their behalf •claiming and spending welfare benefits on their behalf •deciding where they live •making decisions about their day-to-day personal care or healthcare. You might want to manage someone else’s affairs because they: •are ill or disabled, either temporarily or on a long-term basis •are out of the country for a while •are unable to make decisions for themselves, because of mental illness or other reasons. Different ways of managing someone’s affairs There are different ways of managing someone’s affairs. Choosing the right one will depend mainly on the circumstances of the person whose affairs you want to manage, and whether or not they have mental capacity. You can look after someone’s affairs in one of the following ways:•with a letter or a third party mandate to deal with a bank, building society or other financial account. •as an agent or appointee to deal with someone’s welfare benefits or tax credits •with a power of attorney. There are different types of power of attorney •as a deputy appointed by the Court of Protection Power of attorney When someone makes a power of attorney, they appoint someone else to act on their behalf. The person making the power of attorney is called a donor and the person appointed to act on their behalf is called an attorney. A power of attorney gives the attorney the legal authority to deal with third parties such as

banks or the local council. Some types of power of attorney also give the attorney the legal power to make a decision on behalf of someone else such as where they should live or whether they should see a doctor. In order to make a power of attorney, you must be capable of making decisions for yourself. This is called having mental capacity There are three different types of power of attorney. These are: •Ordinary power of attorney – see under heading Ordinary power of attorney •Lasting power of attorney – see under heading Lasting power of attorney •Enduring power of attorney – see under heading Enduring power of attorney. Ordinary power of attorney If you want someone to look after your financial affairs for a long period of time, you can give them an ordinary power of attorney. You might want to give someone an ordinary power of attorney if: •you have a physical illness •you have an accident which leads to physical injury •you are abroad for a long period of time. You should not use an ordinary power of attorney if: •you have been diagnosed with a mental health problem or other disease which can lead to mental incapacity •you think you may develop a mental health problem or other disease which can lead to mental incapacity. This is because you won’t be able to continue using an ordinary power of attorney if you lose your mental capacity. Under these circumstances, it may be more appropriate to use a lasting power of attorney. Lasting power of attorney If you want someone to look after your affairs for a long period of time, you can give them a lasting power of attorney (LPA). An LPA is different from an ordinary power of attorney

because: •you can make an LPA which looks after your health and care decisions, as well as one to look after your property and financial affairs •an LPA must be registered before it can be used •an LPA is intended for use by people who are at risk of losing their mental capacity – see below. Lasting power of attorney You should make an LPA if you have been diagnosed with, or think you might develop, an illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself at some time in the future. The kinds of illness which might prevent you from making decisions for yourself include: •dementia •mental health problems •brain injury •alcohol or drug misuse •the side-effects of medical treatment •any other illness or disability. You must make an LPA whilst you are still capable of making decisions for yourself. This is called having mental capacity Types of lasting power of attorney There are two types of LPA: •A property and financial affairs LPA •A health and welfare LPA. Depending on your personal situation, you could decide to make: •Only a property and financial affairs LPA •Only a health and welfare LPA •Both a property and financial affairs LPA and a health and welfare welfare LPA. You don’t have to make both types of LPA at the same time.

Adult Book Choice Zealot’s Bones by D M Mark David Mark’s first historical crime novel is a gripping read. Set in Hull in 1849, a cholera outbreak is devastating the population. In the midst of this plague, young women are being brutally murdered. The local constabulary is keen to keep the murders quiet; they have enough on their plates. Along comes, Mesach Stone, a ravaged and tormented ex-major in the British army. He has been hired as bodyguard by a Canadian academic hunting for the bones of the apostle Simon the Zealot, rumoured to lie somewhere in Lincolnshire. Stone can’t see why ancient bones are of interest in a world full of death - but then a woman he briefly loved is murdered. As he investigates he realises that she is just one of many - and that some deaths cry out for vengeance.

Weston Hills Church of England School This term we have had two fundraising events; the Mothers Day Wrap where children can choose a gift for mums, grannies, aunties, etc. And the School Discos. We are continuing to fundraise for replacements to the “trim trail” and are ready to start phase one of the project. The children have all given their views on the type of equipment they would like—we now have the difficult task of meeting at least some of their expectations!

Ayscoughfee Hall School Children at Ayscoughfee Hall School have been enjoying their new Forest School experiences. Reception and Years 1 and 6 have been busy building homes for woodland creatures or hatching penguin eggs, in work related to their current topics. Other classes are looking forward to their turn after Easter. Meanwhile sports fixtures have been taking place with our Under 9 and Under 11 footballers travelling to Copthill and Grantham. In recent matches the U9 boys won all their matches, whilst the Under 11 team drew theirs at Copthill and won at Grantham. The Under 11 netballers drew 19 all with Grantham…an amazing score. Our A team hockey players won the recent local tournament whilst the B team won two matches, drew one and lost one. We look forward to our Cross Country competition. Years 1 and 5 enjoyed a visit from Star Lincs planetarium whilst Reception and Year 3 were lucky enough to enjoy a delicious Chinese meal at The Crystal Inn to celebrate Chinese New Year. The older children also tried their hand at speaking a little and painting Chinese characters. The PTFA held a successful disco for the children and, at the end of one of the coldest February weeks in history are hosting their Havana Nights annual ball.

The staff, children and parents recently enjoyed a fantastic two weeks of cycling provided by Outspoken Training. The instructors made sure that all the children from FS2, Y1, Y2 and Y6 had a positive experience while learning the valuable lifelong skill of riding their balance bikes and bikes safely. Outspoken are a very professional team who enabled the three courses to run smoothly with great communication and reminders. Children in Year 6 enjoyed the challenge of their Level 2 Bikeability when they took to the local roads of Spalding. It was an intensive yet rewarding course and all of the children who took part successfully passed the course. Year 1 and Year 2 children, were given the opportunity to take part in a Learn to Ride course. By playing games and building their confidence, the children saw fantastic results with some children being able to ride without stabilisers for the first time. One parent commented, ‘We have been trying to get our daughter to cycle without stabilisers for ages then she did it within 15 minutes with the bikeability people! She was also immensely proud of herself! All of the children in FS2 took part in a four-day course of Balance Bike training. They were taught the different parts of the bike and were given some safety guidelines for when they are on their bikes. When riding the balance bikes, they used big strides

and turned around the cones. Through a range of games and activities the children became confident on their bikes. One parent commented, ‘What a fantastic experience Balance Bikeability provided. My little boy talked about nothing else during the evenings! Adventures with pirates and in castles not to mention the green ‘bogey’ helmets!!’ ‘My son is now able to ride his bike without stabilisers. Thank you for the opportunity of balance bike training as this has really helped to build his confidence. He is very happy and proud of his achievement.’ It has been a valuable two weeks which has promoted safety while riding bikes. The demand has been so great that the school are offering another course of Learn to Ride provided by Outspoken Training.

Wisbech Grammar School Pupils raised £1097 in aid of Cancer Research UK by “Walking all over Cancer” Pupils from Wisbech Grammar School walked 1 mile on Friday 2 February in support of World Cancer Day on 4 February 2018. Pupils from the reception class through to 6th Form joined with members of staff to raise money for this worthy cause. The School combined this walk with a nonuniform day to maximise the fundraising opportunity. Pupils from Wisbech Grammar School walked 1 mile

Sue Simmons, North Cambridgeshire Fundraisers for Cancer Research UK, said: “this is a fantastic achievement from the school; it’s wonderful to see the whole school joining together as one community to support this event”. Cancer Research UK’s vision is to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured. In the 1970s, less than a quarter of people with cancer survived. But over the last 40 years, survival has doubled – today, half will survive. Their ambition is to accelerate progress and see three-quarters of people surviving the disease within the next 20 years. Their new strategy will give them the foundations they need to tackle the challenges ahead. All money raised from WGS I mile walk on Friday 2 January will go directly to the Cancer Research Institute in Cambridge, keeping the funds in the local area.

Focus on Long Sutton This month we look a little bit of history on the town of Long Sutton.

he existence of a settlement in Long Sutton can be traced back to Norman times and possibly to the 9th century, the Friday Market dates back to the early 13th Century, when the town was a prosperous trading centre, by the 14th Century Long Sutton was said to be one of the richest communities in Lincolnshire with it’s main industry being farming of the rich arable land that surrounds this market town, which has always contributed to the prosperity of the area. Long Sutton has many examples of fine Georgian architecture, St Mary’s Church, is famous

for its 13th Century leadcovered timber spire. This is a similar design as Chesterfield’s famous twisted spire but Long Sutton’s spire still stands straight and true. It is now the highest, oldest and best-preserved lead spire in England and possibly Europe: Legend has it that Dick Turpin Highwayman stopped in Long Sutton on his legendry overnight ride from London to York hence the name “Swap Coat Lane” a street leading of Market Street, it is said that King Johns jewels were lost in the wash area somewhere around Long Sutton which at that time was an island or costal settlement in the Wash.

“B

reastfeeding is one of single hardest things you will ever do”. This is my opening statement whenever I am teaching antenatal classes. Of course, no one believes how hard it is going to be until the 2nd or 3rd night with sore nipples, aches and pains in places you never knew existed and an unhealthy dose of sleep deprivation. Women expect the sleeplessness to some degree and they also expect there to be some pain along the way, but what they aren’t prepared for is the neediness of breastfeeding and the utter and overwhelming terror that you aren’t feeding your baby enough milk. To breastfeed effectively, your baby needs access to you and your breasts almost constantly for the first couple of weeks, which means everything you think you know about your life goes out of the window. When your baby wants to do nothing more than feed from you for 24 hours straight, it can be physically and emotionally overwhelming. Physically because you will start to get sore, no matter how deep your latch is. More importantly though, is the emotional strain this will take. Instinctively, when our baby feeds for so long we feel that something is wrong. The top of that list is that we aren’t making enough milk. How can we be when baby is still hungry? But did you know babies want to go to the breast for lots of reasons, not only because they are hungry. Increasing milk supply – usually night 2 and 3 but at any

point where they are having a growth spurt. Not only normal but necessary if you want to succeed. Antibody production – every feed your body is ‘reading’ the bacterial makeup of your baby’s saliva as it washes over the nipple. Your body produces antibodies based on what it finds, so if your baby is getting a cold, cough or infection they will want to go to the breast more often. Comfort – Sometimes babies just want to feel a bit more love! Neurological feedback in the ‘4th trimester’ is one of the building blocks of happy, attached children. Contrary to popular belief, you can’t spoil a baby with too many cuddles (or breastfeeds). They aren’t manipulative, and you aren’t making a ‘rod for your own back’ if you allow them to seek their comfort from feeding. Wind – Babies can’t tell if that ‘strange tummy pain’ is hunger or wind. On an evolutionary level they are designed to survive, so feeding will always win even if they aren’t hungry. If you are struggling at any point of your journey, they best way around it is to get some help. Usually, an hour’s support is worth at least a day of tears and worry. There is always a fix and a way round whatever problem you have – latch, supply, pain, mental health etc- don’t give up on a bad day, you will almost certainly regret it. If you choose to end your breastfeeding journey, do it because you want to, not because you think you failed.

Here’s the final instalment of the Chapman family’s round the world trip.Nigel, Louise and son Kian (8) left Spalding last September and took in the west coast of America, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Nigel tells Simply about the final leg - and what being back in England feels like...

hailand’s capital city was our entry point to the final country in our fivemonth adventure. Bangkok by day feels slightly chaotic and never less than 100mph. The river boat taxis are a perfect example. They zoom along the waterways with stops so brief that those passengers who are not fully prepared to hop on or off right away risk doing the splits

between the boat and the jetty as it sets off again! However, the traditional way to see the city is via a tuk tuk, a motorised bike with the capacity to carry passengers in an open-air “hutch” on the back. The maximum number of people seemed to fluctuate as did the cost which often took some negotiating down. But the feeling of whizzing through the warm air of the streets was great, even with the odd hairy moment as the numerous other vehicles elbow their way into position. Jim Thompson House Museum was a highlight for us. The American is credited with turning the Thai silk trade into the booming business it still is today, 51 years after his

On a small Thai island, the sun sets bringing our five-mo nth adventure abroad to an end disappearance in Malaysia. It was lovely too to catch a glimpse of the photographs being taken after a wedding ceremony held there. Much further north in Thailand is its second city, the walled Chiang Mai. Astonishingly, there are more than 300 Buddhist temples inside the city walls and we took the opportunity to learn more about some of them during a three-hour bike ride tour with Grasshopper Adventures. Our guide led us through a warren of streets and took us to a variety of market stalls where we were able to try local fruits and drinks. Even better was our day trip to Karen Habitat, an elephant sanctuary in the Mae Wang area, south-west of Chiang Mai. The operator is educating local elephant owners to not use the animals for unethical means, such as riding, logging and as tourist attractions in the street. Elephants are brought to live at the habitat and visitors can help feed, bathe them in mud and wash them down in the river. This way the owner can still earn an income from their asset in a much more natural environment. It was a truly unique and amazing experience to be

At one point we were on a narrow path on the hillside when one of the two adults sauntered by us so closely that we could have breathed on it (if we hadn’t been holding our breath). A day that was definitely one of the highlights of the whole trip for us. Equally memorable - albeit on a different scale - was the overnight train back to Bangkok for an onward flight to Krabi, at the southern end of the country. We’d not managed to secure beds on the sleeper train so it was seats for us on a rattler which made dozens of stops en route to our 4.30am alight. Not the ideal scenario for sleep so we filed that in the “an experience” folder. After some kayaking and relaxing on the lovely beaches it was time to accept our adventure of a lifetime was coming to an end. Time for Louise and I to find jobs again and for Kian to return to Spalding Monkshouse Primary School. And what better way for the reality to bite than swapping 30 degrees Centigrade for freezing temperatures and snow-bound roads...

Although we both enjoy starters we’ve found that by the time your main course comes you are already feeling quite full, especially after Poppadoms so we tend to enjoy the main meal fully. RS is the Skoda badge that denotes the Czech firm’s most powerful and capable models. vRS means performance, and the symbol commands a lot more respect than you might realise. In the Czech Republic, Skoda vRS models are admired for their toughness and performance, and in the UK, they’ve also garnered a real fanbase. Octavia vRS owners often state there’s probably no finer all-rounder on the market at this price point, and they might well have a case. For under £30,000, you get a powerful 2.0-litre 184PS diesel engine mated to a decent automatic gearbox that helps put the power down via all-wheel drive. It handles nimbly for a larger car too, and is equally at home on a B road as it is on a motorway chewing up the miles.
