Health, Beauty and Wellbeing

For me my summer holiday is over – we spent a lovely week in Portugal but for many this month is all about jetting off or packing up the car for the annual vacation. I have to say I do have lots of envy at my friends and family who are about to leave for warmer locations. I am now down to single figure weeks for my upcoming nuptials and I have to say a little bit of panic has crept in. What have I forgotten? What will the weather be like? And the one thing we still aren’t able to decide on is flowers and with an impending deadline we need to make decisions and fast! The scary thing for me is the next time I write my welcome will be my last as a Willerton and a single lady – that will make it seem all the more real come 4 weeks’ time. I hope whatever your plans for the summer holidays it’s full of sun, fun and happy memories. Until next month.

Royal visit celebrates opening of new £9 million facility University Academy Holbeach today welcomed HRH Princess Beatrice of York to officially open the school’s new £9 million facility. Princess Beatrice visited the Academy on Wednesday 18th June 2014 to see the new building, which offers a modern learning environment for pupils and provides 3,500 square metres of additional teaching space. The new building, which includes the Academy’s first purpose-built sports hall, specialist Design and Technology and Art facilities and 24 new classrooms, was commissioned to replace the site’s original 1950s-era buildings. The new facilities were completed in November 2013 and they will now enable the Academy, which has been oversubscribed since it opened, to offer an additional 20 student places per year. During the visit, Her Royal Highness was invited on a tour of the building, unveiled a commemorative plaque and met with staff and students. She also witnessed one of the Academy’s Freshstart literacy lessons. Speaking about the royal visit, Steve Baragwanath, Principal at University Academy Holbeach, said: “We are delighted that Princess Beatrice was able to join us here at the Academy to celebrate the opening of our new building. We are extremely pleased with our new facilities, and it was an honour to take our royal visitor on a tour and highlight how they are benefitting our pupils and staff.”

Creative Arts Showcase Artistic Brilliance at End of Year Exhibition

Over 200 Creative students from a variety of disciplines including Fashion, Art and Design, Photography, Media, Illustration, Fine Art, Textiles and Graphic Design came together to put on an extensive exhibition of masterpieces at New College Stamford’s Creative Arts End of Year Show. The exhibition is a showcase and celebration of the journey each student has been on to develop truly talented and committed artistic concepts. So much so, visitors were provided with a ‘passport’ and guided through a runway of terminals that professionally presented work from each of the 13 art courses studied at

the College. Rachael Cooper, Assistant Director of Learning for Creative Arts said, “This is one of the real highlights of the academic year as it represents a culmination of a great deal of hard work. As ever, this year’s exhibition has caused us to stop, think, reflect and be inspired with visitors, staff and students alike, agreeing that the quality of work gets better year on year.” Professional links from the industry, and hundreds of parents and prospective students applying to do next years’ courses were also invited, all reporting on their pleasure at seeing such a high standard of creativity on show.

MAUI JIM Beach Party Winners announced Molsom & Associates Optometrists of Spalding recently held their second exciting Beach Party, where the full-range of Maui Jim sunglasses were showcased for the day. There was a giant Parrot shipped over from Hawaii to entertain the children and the adults alike. There were fruit cocktails served from a fountain, and 2 free prize draws to win a fantastic pair of Maui Jim sunglasses, arguably the best sunglasses in the world. Children also had their own Sunglass competition to guess the number of pebbles in a sweet jar. Andy Molsom, owner of Molsom & Associates Optometrists said “It was an exhilarating day, we had a great deal of interest in this fabulous brand of sunglasses and their unique abilities to stop glare and improve visual comfort in the sun. It was particularly noted by drivers how much better they are than their own sunglasses.” The winner of the Free Prize Draw on the

day was Jamie Storer from Spalding. The childrens winner was Ruby, and our Facebook competition was won by Ruth Hale with an amazing 70 likes.

Luke Pasqualino launches new look hair salon for Dad Luke Pasqualino, who stars as D’Artagnan in the BBC’s swashbuckling Three Musketeers unveiled Image International’s stunning new look interior on Thursday 3rd July. The Spalding hair salon is owned by Luke’s father, Pep Pasqualino, one of the UK’s top hairdressers. To celebrate over 30 years in business in Spalding, salon owner Pep has just completed a major refit of his Red Lion Street premises. Luke flew in from Prague, where he is currently filming the second series of the hit adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s novel, to cut the ribbon for his Dad. The opening ceremony was followed by an invitation-only VIP party. Pep, a lead platform artist with global hair giant Paul Mitchell said, “I wanted to take our affordable luxury customer service experience to a whole new level. Our updated look includes a brand new male grooming section, relaxing spa backwash area with feature ceiling, a new colour lounge complete with a bold hand-painted wall graphic and an airy, sophisticated main salon.” Luke said, “The relationship I have with my father is a huge thing for me - me and my dad get on like a house on fire - we are like best friends. I’m absolutely thrilled to be asked to launch his salon’s stunning new look. ”

Pep added, “The salon now boasts a new barber section with traditional chairs where we’re offering wet shaves and the very latest in men’s grooming. I cut Luke’s hair on Thursday before the re-opening to test-drive our new facilities.”

Charity Cricket Match Each year South Holland & The Deepings MP, John Hayes hosts his annual charity cricket match, which sees two teams – the Lords & Commons XI and the Moulton Harrox Irregulars competing for the ‘John Hayes Moulton Harrox Trophy’. A presentation of funds raised will take place on Saturday 5th July at 2pm at Moulton Harrox Sports & Social Club, Broad Lane, Moulton. The recipients are Karen Bevan on behalf of Headway, Cambridgeshire, the charity which supports people with brain injury, Moulton Cricket Club,Frank Blades and Eric Ormond on behalf of Lincolnshire Carers and Young Carers Partnership, Mrs Pam

Elton and Mrs Rita Mitchell on behalf of Dementia Care in Holbeach First Responders, Colin Jackman from the Royal British Legion and John Chester from the Western Front Association. John Hayes said: “Our annual charity cricket match is always a great success and raises funds for many local good causes.” Tickets for the hog roast (served after the match) and celebrations are available for only £12.50 for an adult ticket (15yrs and over), £5.00 for a children’s ticket (over 5 but under 15) and under 5’s free. To obtain or reserve your tickets please contact Mr Hayes’ constituency office on 01775 711534.

Growing Greener with Queensgate Celebrate all things green with Queensgate Shopping Centre’s fun and interactive two day event. Growing Greener is taking place from 11am until 4pm on Thursday 14th and Friday 15th August to celebrate all things eco-friendly. Over the two days there will be an artist constructing an aweinspiring cardboard sculpture; as a special treat for Peterborough he’ll be skilfully recreating the City’s Coat of Arms. Children will also be able to take part in a sculpture building workshop as well as other free activities. Local artists will be using their skills to customise environmentally friendly cotton bags to encourage people to reuse rather than rely on plastic bags. These are free but there will be limited availability. Queensgate Shopping Centre is extremely proud of its green initiative with 100% of its waste diverted from landfill every year. In addition to this, many of the stores have their own eco policies which help to make a difference to the environment on a national and global scale. To celebrate this, there will be loads of interesting

facts on display, helping the people of Peterborough to understand the green efforts of both the Centre and its stores. Sam Eastwood, Centre Director for Queensgate, said: “Ensuring we manage our carbon footprint and protect the environment as much as we can is hugely important to us. We make sure we do our bit and we want to show the people of Peterborough that being environmentally sustainable can be fun; it doesn’t have to be a chore.”

Apology We would like to apologise to Sgt Gareth Boxall as we ran his editorial in the July issue under the name of Sgt Paul Coleman. We also ran pictures of the Spalding team against introductions of the Holbeach team - we hope to run these images in a future issue. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Memorial Clay Pigeon Shoot A charity clay pigeon shoot is being held in memory of a popular farm manager. The family and friends of Weston man Peter Barney are organising the event in memory of the Lincolnshire Field Products manager who died in October 2010, following an accident at his workplace. The event at Sinclairs Shooting Ground, in Whaplode Drove, on Sunday, August 3 from 10am to 3pm, is open to anyone and will be raising money for UK charity Guide Dogs. Mr Barney’s family said it is hoped the memorial shoot will be a fitting tribute to the 58-year-old who was a keen fan of the sport himself. Entry for the 50 bird sporting competition is £13 and

competitors are welcome to shoot more than one round. There are three prizes on offer, with the winner receiving £125 and a trophy to keep for a year. The second placed gun will win 250 cartridges and the third £30. If the shoot goes well Mr Barney’s family hopes to make it an annual event. Non-shooters can show their support by making a donation online at www. justgiving.com/KatherineChapman1 Refreshments will be available. For more information follow The Peter Barney Memorial Shoot Facebook page.

Sainsbury’s Spalding celebrates success of yearlong partnership with S.P.O.T.S A year’s worth of fundraising and awareness support from Sainsbury’s Spalding has made a huge difference to the staff at S.P.O.T.S. Thanks to generous donations from customers, the store has announced they have raised £2325.65 in total. On 4th July, colleagues from the store, including Adrian Webb, Deputy Store Manager met with the charity members at the Spalding Store to celebrate the successful partnership. It’s been an amazing 12 months for the charity after they entered Sainsbury’s Spalding Local Charity voting process back in May 2012. For the last five years, the retailer gives customers nationwide the chance to vote for their favourite Local Charity, to be considered to receive a year’s worth of support from their nearby Sainsbury’s store. When the charity were announced as S.P.O.T.S new Local charity partner for 2013/2014, Darren Maddison couldn’t wait to get started: “For a big retailer like Sainsbury’s to confirm a year’s partnership with us was just incredible news. I remember getting the phone-

call and having a big grin on my face! We had our first meeting shortly after and we worked up some great ideas that we hoped would create great feedback with the store’s customers and colleagues”. Throughout the last 12 months, colleagues at the store held several activities to raise funds and awareness of the charity’s cause. These included quiz nights and flash mobs. Meanwhile, the store also took part in bag packing. Despite the partnership coming to a close, it doesn’t mean that the charity will now be forgotten, as Store Manager Paul Bryan explains: “Our colleagues have really enjoyed working with S.P.O.T.S and it’s certainly touched the hearts of many of them that before didn’t necessary have a direct link to them. We know what an important part they play in the community and we hope the year-long partnership has helped remind our customers of the valuable service they provide in Spalding. Thanks to the partnership, we’ll certainly now be

looking into ways we can support them in the future”. The partnership has helped the charity to launch their Ever Young Group and Darren Maddison, is grateful for the admirable efforts of customers and the Sainsbury’s Spalding team: Get quote from Local Charity rep approved before you include in release: The shortlisting of nominations have taken place for the selection for this year’s local charity partner. Next week store’s colleagues will then invite the three charities that they feel best fit the needs of the community into store to talk about how Sainsbury’s can support them. The chosen charity will be selected based on the reasons given and the store will announce their chosen charity.

Notes

If you would like to contact Nick with a specific question, please email info@simplyspalding.co.uk

Summer is a time for festivals and South Holland Communities put in a huge amount of time and effort right across the District to bring both traditional, but also innovative and inspirational family events for us all to enjoy and what a variety! To name just a few, we have recently seen the Pinchbeck Carnival, Moulton Chapel Flower Parade, Long Sutton Horse and Pony Show, Holbeach Country Fayre, Holbeach Food Festival, the Rainbow Summer Solstice Festival in Tydd St Mary, Summer Fetes in many villages across the district and of course the very first Spalding People’s Parade, which was a huge success in its own right. There are many more to come with a vast range of exhibitions and performances by Transported Art, a vast array of activities in the District Council’s Summer Fun Brochure ( out now!), the now famous Pumpkin Festival and then numerous Christmas Fayres and markets. All of this makes you realise what a great community spirit we have in South Holland, but also the amount of time volunteers put in to make these events such a success. Not only that, but together they make a huge contribution to our local economy and often bring in large amounts of external grant funding into South Holland and add vibrancy to our towns and villages. Well done to you all and long may they continue!

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

“All of this makes you realise what a great community spirit we have in South Holland, but also the amount of time volunteers put in to make these events such a success.” Many of the above events have been going for decades, but I think I can say with some certainty that none will eclipse the 800th anniversary next year of the Sealing of the Magna Carta. Lincoln Cathedral owns one of the original copies brought back directly from Runnymeade by Bishop Hugh of Wells and will be unveiled in all its’ glory in a bespoke vault at Lincoln Castle next June, alongside the Charter of The Forest and a later edition copy of the Magna Carta for comparison. Lincoln Castle, Lincoln

Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace all survive from the days of King John and the Magna Carta. The Magna Carta has huge significance today in terms of liberty and fighting oppression which we are seeing all over the World at the present time. It is likely to attract huge numbers of people to Lincoln and Lincolnshire next year, alongside some seriously important people. So this is a heads up – one make sure you go and visit it and the associated Great Exhibition ( more detail later) and two when you are planning your events for next year, you now have a theme! Lincolnshire County Council is currently compiling a list of events Countywide, so do let them know and make the most of the publicity for your town and village.

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Spalding Parish Church of England Day School Year 4 children took part in the ‘Monster Poetry Competition’ which is organised by Young Writers, a national organisation. The children’s poems were entered into the competition and then considered for publication in regional anthologies. All the children thoroughly enjoyed writing their poems which focused on writing a narrative poem. The judges were looking for poems which showed evidence of imagination, expression, interpretation of poetry, use of language and description. The children have been very excited as many of them have now received confirmation that their poems will be published in regional anthologies. They just wait now to find out if their poems get any further in the competition.

Monkshouse Primary School Below is an amazing poem that Bethany Ward in Year 6 has written about a candle when studying personification in Literacy. Candle I am alive, An infant, learning, Stretching, twirling, For life, I cease yearning. Pushing the boundaries With my golden light, Coughing, spluttering, Yet glowing bright. I’m standing on tip toes, Rising and free I’m older, stronger For I am me. Silky, majestic, In a dainty white dress, Yet the saucer below me, A waxy wrinkled mess. I know it’s time, For the tears roll down I’m wrinkled, defeated No. I won’t frown. I’m sorry, it’s winning, The light’s swallowing me. I’m sinking, falling No more shall I be.

Holbeach Primary School Miss Bird, Miss Hearth and Miss Richardson, the class teachers, were very impressed with all the children who wrote poems. It was an excellent way to showcase their writing talents. One Year 4 child commented, ‘I very much enjoyed the monster poem which I tried very hard with and with my very creative (If I may say so myself!) monster.’

Tulip Pre-school The children have had an exciting time since returning from May’s half term break. We have had a visit from Animal Investigations who brought along lots of animals, including a meerkat, toad, snake, bearded dragon, skunk and owl for the children to meet, stroke and learn about. This was a huge hit with the children, they enjoyed it so much that they used junk-modelling in the craft area to make the animal’s ‘houses’ that they were transported in and used the role play area to re-enact the visit, taking it in turns to do the talks about the (toy!) animals to their classmates! We have also had our annual Sports Day where all the children made a fantastic effort with activities like the egg and spoon race, and beanbag toss, everyone did very well and had lots of fun. We are looking forward to making the most of the warm weather with our new outdoor play equipment and to our second visit of the year to the town library for Bookstart Week. Summer and Transition will be the themes for the rest of term and the children have already been practicing putting on their own coats and getting changed into PE kit ready for school in September. They have been making beach scenes, have had an ice-cream parlour in their role play area and are looking forward to learning about, eating and painting with Summer fruits! Well done to all those who will be leaving us to start big school in September – good luck!!

Moulton Chapel Primary The oldest children thoroughly enjoyed a 4 day residential to PGL at Caythorpe Court – and this was a welcome break at the end of their KS2 SATs week. As a school we are really putting emphasis on travel to school in June and July, encouraging children (and parents/guardians!) to walk, cycle or “scoot” to school rather than bring the car. The road safety officer has been into school to work with the children on road safety education and the whole school took part in the national Giant Walking Bus, to raise awareness of the need to observe the speed limits in Moulton Chapel, especially outside the school. On 12th June we organised a Race for Life to support Cancer Research UK. The whole school, plus staff and parents walked a 1K route into Moulton Chapel, stopping at the drinks station at The Jolly Farmer before continuing back to school. Everyone then completed another 4K around the school field, in a variety of ways: walk, jog, hula hoop, bean bag on head, 3 legged. Great fun – and lots of money raised: £674.00 at the time of writing. Thank you to everyone for their support. There will still be lots more happening before we end the school year in July: Cycle proficiency training for Y5/6, a half price children’s book fair (open to all 3.00 to 4.00 each day), an Engineering Day for 5/6 of our 6 Collaborative Partnership Schools in partnership with Perkins of Peterborough and GIST transport coming to school on 1st July with one of their vehicles to educate the children on the different road safety issues that large vehicles present.

Pupils from years 3, 4 and 5 recently celebrated their success in creative writing. Pupils were asked to write creative and imaginative stories about a Superhero for the Young Writers’ Let’s Get Writing Superhero Stories competition. 40 different stories written by pupils from Holbeach Primary were selected for publication in the book Superhero Stories-East Midland Tales. This book is due for publication in September 2014. Pupils received a book mark and certificate from the Young Writers team. Staff were absolutely thrilled that so many of their pupils had achieved a standard worthy of publication.

Wisbech Grammar School A contemporary portrait incorporating the school colours has been produced to mark the departure of Wisbech Grammar School headmaster Mr Nicholas Hammond. The oil painting by past pupil Lucy Elderfield (20), from Wisbech, who is reading human geography at the University of Leeds, was commissioned by the governors and is set to join a growing gallery of portraits of former headmasters produced by recent ex-students. The latest addition to the collection, showing a relaxed Mr Hammond on the eve of his departure to become headmaster of The British School of Paris after a six-year spell at the Grammar School, was unveiled by Lucy and presented to the school by chairman of the governors Dr Dennis Barter. In the 3ft x 4ft canvas, which took about three months to complete, there are tell-tale signs of the evolution of the school and the fresh approach of the picture is characterised by a looseness of brush work. The portrait went on public display at a full school assembly, when Lucy explained to the students how she had approached the task, and a smaller print of the portrait has been handed to Mr Hammond by the governors.

Weston Hills CofE Primary As we draw to the end of another academic year, we can look back on a very successful and enjoyable year. We shall be very sorry to say goodbye to Mrs. Turnell, our head teacher for the last 22 years, and also to Mr. Gernert, Mrs. Dudley and Mrs. Barmby Tempest have been into school to take class photographs, and Phonics Screening, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 SATs have all taken place. Our Year 5 and 6 children have just come back from our bi-annual trip to the Palace of Westminster and the London Eye. A fantastic day and the weather stayed fine too!

We brought our Sports Day forward this year (we got rained off twice last year!), and had a really great afternoon. Still to come this term is a Class 3 and 4 trip to Woodside Wildlife & Falconry Park, and a Class 5 trip to Great Yarmouth. Bikeability week is also planned for this term. Induction days will be taking place for our Year 6 children at their new secondary schools. We wish them well with the transition and for the future. Our new Reception children will be joining us this term for three taster sessions. On the last day, they will also be bringing their packed lunches!

Advice

Discrimination

I

by Lisa Barwell f you’ve been treated differently from other people because of who you are, you might have been discriminated against.

When are you protected from discrimination? Discrimination means treating you unfairly because of who you are. The Equality Act 2010 protects you from discrimination by: • employers • businesses and organisations which provide goods or services like banks, shops and utility companies • health and care providers like hospitals and care homes • someone you rent or buy a property from like housing associations and estate agents • schools, colleges and other education providers • transport services like buses, trains and taxis • public bodies like government departments and local authorities. There are nine protected characteristics in the Equality Act. Discrimination which happens because of one or more of these characteristics is unlawful under the Act. We all have some of these characteristics - for example, sex or age - so the Act protects everyone from discrimination. If you’re treated unfairly because someone thinks you belong to a group of people with protected characteristics, this is also unlawful discrimination.

What are the protected characteristics? The characteristics that are protected by the Equality Act 2010 are:

• age • disability • gender reassignment • marriage or civil partnership (in employment only) • pregnancy and maternity • race • religion or belief • sex • sexual orientation.

Discrimination by association The Act also protects you if people in your life, like family members or friends, have a protected characteristic and you’re treated unfairly because of that. This is called discrimination by association. For example, if you’re discriminated against because your son is gay.

If you complain about discrimination The Equality Act protects you if you’re treated badly because you’ve complained about discrimination or stood up for discrimination rights, either for yourself or for someone else.

Equality Advisory Support Service discrimination helpline If you think you’ve been affected by discrimination, you can call a helpline called the Equality Advisory Support Service (EASS).

Who can contact the helpline? The EASS helpline is for people who think they may have experienced discrimination and will not be available to employers, service providers or educators. The service aims to support you if you’re referred from local organisations. These include advisory groups, faith based organisations and other community groups that support people

experiencing discrimination. You can call the helpline directly, but it’s best if you go to an advice organisation first.

How can they help? The helpline can provide advice and information on discrimination in employment, housing, education, transport and cases where you may have been discriminated against when using or buying goods and services. It can also provide advice and information on human rights issues. Help is provided by: • explaining what the law says and how this applies to you • explaining how a situation could be resolved • supporting you to try and resolve issues informally • if the issues can’t be resolved informally, referring you to a conciliation or mediation service • if you need or want to seek a legal solution, helping you work out if you’re eligible for civil legal aid • if you’re not eligible for civil legal aid, helping you find an accessible legal service, or helping you represent yourself by giving information and support on how to prepare and lodge a claim.

Contact details Telephone: 0808 800 0082 Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm Saturday, 10am to 2pm Citizens Advice and the Government Equalities Office have produced two guides to some of your rights under the Equality Act. These can be found on CAB advice guide: http://www.adviceguide.org.uk

Molsom & Associates

Maui Jim Sunglasses The large range of frames is matched with the most sophisticated sunglass lens technology available using a patented multi-layer lens system. The Maui Jim method works to eliminate the interference of glare in all of its forms, so that the ultimate in visual acuity and visual comfort is achieved, enabling the wearer to experience only the best of Mother Nature. And without the threat of glare, contrast is sharpened, depth perception is deepened and colour quality is enhanced - the essential elements of vision are therefore at their best. The PolarizedPlus2 solution means that 99.9% of reflected glare is absorbed, maximising the amount of usable light reaching the eye. The eye can thus see detail and interpret colour with maximum impact. Also UV rays are blocked from troubling the eyes, making these perfect for sports people, drivers or just lazing around at the beach.

Molsom & Associates are a local family run Optometrist established in 1997

espite fierce competition in the town from multinational opticians, Molsom Optometrists are growing each year as they look after the eyes of the local community. This year has seen over 20000 customers come through their doors. They offer the highest standards of clinical care (using the latest state of the art technology) and customer service in a relaxed, helpful and friendly environment with a high level of trust, offering products to maximise quality of vision with value for money. They are proud to have been the first optometrists practice to bring Digital Retinal Photography to the town in 2005, and to be the first and only Optometrist in the area offering advanced examinations using the latest 3D scanning technology for the past 5 years. In today’s economic climate it’s hard for small businesses to maintain their appeal, so it’s especially encouraging that Molsom & Associates continue to grow their business in tough times. “As a small business owner I know how important it is to get things right, so that people feel confident in using our services recommending the practice to family and friends. We have a great team, and we all share a common goal…to offer all of our patients a memorable experience knowing that their eye care is in good hands” said Andy Molsom. In 2013, Andy Molsom, was

nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. In nominations for Mr Molsom he is described as efficient, welcoming, approachable and supportive. Mr Molsom said: “It’s a great honour that a patient has thought me worthy for this award. “As independent practices we always do our very best for all our patients, irrespective of the health of their eyes. People with sight problems however need extra care and time to counsel them appropriately. Without an excellent team of staff behind me,

LINDBERG - Masters of original innovative fashion eyewear design Lindbergs’ philosophy is that a frame must be light and minimalist, which make a fabulous range of spectacle frames that are stylish and extremely comfortable to wear.

“In nominations for Mr Molsom he is described as efficient, welcoming, approachable and supportive.”

we couldn’t deliver the exceptional service we strive for. Our clinical services are our main focus, indeed a recent independent survey showed that 99% of our patients rate our service as either “good or excellent.” Helen Jackman, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Andy Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Their objective of providing the highest quality eye care at prices that are affordable to all has meant their happy customers return time and again for the personal, friendly, caring and professional service offered at Molsom & Associates. They remain at the forefront of improvements in lens choices, being one of only a few Signature Varilux Lens Specialists, stocking the very best Maui Jim sunglasses and the fantastic Lindberg spectacles worn by many celebrities and Royalty. Molsom Optometrists has remained a family business, with an amazing team of long serving, loyal and highly qualified staff and thousands of loyal, local customers, with his teenage daughter waiting enthusiastically in the wings to take over in the future.

This unique event has something for everyone, where music-lovers share cheese and cucumber sandwiches with a bottle of real ale from the Beer Tent with well-known bands and artists, aristocracy, classic car and motorcycle enthusiasts, rockers, poets, fun runners, dancers, townies, graffiti artists and the lovely ladies who make the exceedingly good cupcakes. Grimsthorpe Festival represents classic summer entertainment for a vibrant and friendly crowd from all walks of life. Held in the beautiful grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle Estate near Bourne, pioneering contemporary music and art meets traditional rural entertainment. This year’s event is set to be even bigger and better than ever before. This year the Festival is raising money and awareness for a number of charities including St John Ambulance, Help for Heroes and Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. With the weather being so beautiful, the last Grimsthorpe Festival was a huge hit, seeing around 20,000 festival-goers make their way to the Castle for this amazing event. Founder and organiser Daniel Sumpton said: “Last year’s Grimsthorpe was amazing, and for this year’s Festival I am opening an additional car park to get all the vehicles in to the event quicker. It is important that we keep developing the Festival each year, and so I am introducing lots of new side shows and workshops to entertain our lovely visitors. “Grimsthorpe Festival 2014 is going to be fantastic! All the old favourites including the Classic Car & Motorcycle Show and Show Ring events, the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance should be joining the Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight over Grimsthorpe Castle” Whatever your tastes the Festival will has something for everyone. There are three live music stages including the Main Stage with rock and indie bands playing to the

crowds, as well as the Woodland Stage and the Courtyard Stage. As well as music there is a Show Ring, including performances from A Bit on the Side from the Side Saddle Association, dance groups and displays. There will also be a large number of side shows and workshops to entertain the crowds, including Lionheart Company of Bowman, circus acts and workshops. As well as all the music and entertainment there will also be the very best of festival caterers with a huge choice of culinary delights, an extensive range of arts and crafts stalls, roaming entertainers who will never fail to stop you in your tracks, a fun filled fairground, relaxing therapy and massage zone, a farmer’s market selling the very best of Lincolnshire produce, and above all a magical atmosphere. The festival will be topped off by a visit from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, and Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance that should be landing in the grounds. Daniel said: “This year’s Festival is going to be amazing value at just £8 for an adult Early Bird ticket. It really is about providing great entertainment for great value. I think this has to be one of the best value tickets for a festival around. I am also very pleased to introduce our Early Bird Family Ticket (2 Adults, plus 2 Children) for just £25”. For more information about this year’s Grimsthorpe Festival, including purchasing Early Bird Tickets, visit www.grimsthorpefestival.com, or call Daniel Sumpton on 07711 705604.

A

t the start of the summer holidays the new term seems such a long way away but you can utilise the time to prepare early so there is no mad dash at the beginning of September! We’ve provided a handy shopping list to the left of the page for uniform and equipment to get you started. The summer break is also a good time to make an appointment to see the dentist and the optician. Regular eye checks at school are especially important as eye conditions need to be picked up and corrected as soon as possible so as not to have an impact on your child’s progress at school. Geoff Eastwood from Spalding Eye Care centre points out that as much as 80% of a child’s learning uses vision and also, outside of classroom learning, sports can be impacted. He also mentions that schools don’t provide a routine full sight test so it is important for parents to stay on top of it and also that a child doesn’t need to be able to read or even recognise letters for a sight test so ideally they should be seen from the age of three. If your child is starting primary school for the first time they should have had a visit to their new school and be looking forward to their first day. If they are feeling a bit apprehensive or you want to talk more about it with them there are a wealth of books available on the topic of starting school which children will enjoy reading again and again. Some of our favourites are: Starting School by Janet and Allan Ahlberg Starting School Sticker Book by Usborne Books Don’t Eat the Teacher by Nick Ward and Starting School with Biff, Chip & Kipper. This is a particularly good book to start with as the characters belong to the Oxford Reading Tree series which 80% of primary schools use

to teach children to read so it could serve as a good introduction. If your child is making the big leap from primary to secondary they will also have had visits and possibly a taster afternoon or day but don’t be surprised if you hear similar questions from your children to when they started primary school. Once again it is all new and daunting – a new school, new teachers, new subjects, new friends to be made. It is a big deal. Have a think back to your first day at secondary school and give advice and reassurance where you can. There may also be new travel arrangements – your child may now walk / cycle to school or even be taking the bus for the first time. If they are not regular bus users then you can help to take the worry out of it by taking a couple of trips to help them familiarise themselves with the process. If they are walking or cycling for the first time then take the opportunity to go over road safety rules. If you haven’t done so already, consider buying your child a mobile phone so should they need to contact you on the way to or from school for any reason they are able to do so. If your child has a packed lunch then you might like to start thinking about variety and content. The NHS Choices website gives the following advice on packed lunches: A balanced packed lunch should contain: Starchy foods. These are bread, rice, potatoes and pasta, and should take up a third of the lunchbox. Protein foods. These are meat, fish, eggs, beans and others. A dairy item. This could be cheese or yoghurt. Vegetables or salad, and a portion of fruit. The website also offers advice on how keep packed lunches interesting: Children often like food they can eat with their fingers, so chop up raw veggies such as carrots or peppers, and give them houmous or cottage cheese to dip the veggies in. Breadsticks and wholemeal crackers are great finger foods and they can be spread with lowfat soft cheese or eaten with reduced-fat cheddar and pickles. Replace chocolate bars and cakes with fresh fruit, dried fruit. Vary the fruit each day and get them to try new things, like kiwi or melon. Unsalted nuts are a great snack food for children to have at home, but it’s best to leave them out of your child’s packed lunch. Many schools ban nuts to protect pupils with a nut allergy. You could also make up a tasty fruit salad. Be inventive and encourage your children when they try something new. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Antiques Roadshow

The Antiques Roadshow comes to Belton ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Do you suspect there’s a Leonardo in your loft or some Clarice Cliff in your cupboards? Well this summer’s your chance to find out!

A

“The record for the most expensive item has stood since 2008, when a bronze prototype scale model of Antony Gormley’s sculpture Angel of the North was given a stunning valuation of £1 million...”

28 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

s if a visit to the beautiful Belton House and grounds wasn’t enough of an incentive to get in the car and head off for a day out, July 31 sees the Antiques Roadshow filming there for their new series. Following its tried and tested format, some of Britain’s leading antique and fine arts specialists will be on hand to offer free advice and valuations to visitors. If you think that you have a valuable antique in your possession or own a piece that is a mystery to you then now is the time to get it out and find out if it is indeed a treasure or simply full of sentimental value. Doors are open from 9:30am to 4:30pm. Fiona Bruce is again presenting, and this will be her seventh series. Series editor Simon Shaw says: “Fiona and the team are really looking forward to their visit. Although we can never predict what will come to light, every show brings big surprises, which is what makes working on the show so exciting. So, on behalf of all of the experts, we’re asking the people of Lincolnshire to dig out their treasures!” Will Belton House be the setting of the Roadshow’s biggest ever find? Only time will tell. The record for the most expensive item has stood since 2008, when a bronze prototype scale model of Antony Gormley’s sculpture Angel of the North was given a stunning valuation of £1 million by expert Philip Mould. Imagine taking that back home on the bus! Surely

“Fiona and the team are really looking forward to their visit. Although we can never predict what will come to light, every show brings big surprises, which is what makes working on the show so exciting.” with so many categories of antique it is only a matter of time before that valuation is smashed again. If you are undecided about whether or not to go, the trick is to be brave. If you have an inkling that you might have something with historical interest then don’t hesitate, even if it is small or not particularly attractive. And conversely, don’t let the size of your antiques put you off, if you have large pieces of furniture or other big items then before you bring them out you can first send details and photographs to: Antiques Roadshow, BBC, Whiteladies Road, Bristol BS8 2LR. By starting in this way it saves you a wasted journey with a large piece. If the details you send are of interest to the Antiques Roadshow team it may be possible to arrange to look at the item in advance and organise transportation to the venue. And be prepared to laugh it off if it is worth very little. If nothing else you will have had a great day out. So fingers crossed for fine weather, wear comfortable shoes in case of queuing and the best of luck – let’s hope you are sitting looking at some treasure!

Pub Grub

Pub Grub ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Gone are the days of a ‘Pie and a Pint’, these days the food a pub has to offer can be as important as the drink

T

“Local produce is also a prominent feature in the best pubs. As well as tasting good as it is food which is in season and hasn’t had to travel, it also supports local businesses who supply vegetables, meat and other ingredients.”

oday people will travel great distances to pubs with a reputation for good food, and those who have sampled it are only too happy to shout about it, with websites like TripAdvisor allowing you to evaluate the experiences of others before trying it yourself. Pubs which are renowned for their food are often known for a specific type of food, with the most popular being Sunday Roast. Sunday lunch is a meal increasingly eaten out rather than at home. It’s a great opportunity for the whole family to get together, enjoy a good meal and each other’s company. Carvery is the most popular choice with cooked meat being freshly sliced as you stand there and you are able to take your choice from freshly prepared vegetables and trimmings. It gives traditional Sunday lunch a much larger selection that you could put out on your dining room table at home! Traditional pub fayre is also making something of a comeback with gourmet versions of old favourites such as pies and fish and chips back on the menu. Another regular staple is the Specials Board which adds further variety to the menu. This usually consists of dishes you wouldn’t make for yourself at home and can make a nice change to your usual diet. You can expect to find a wide variety of fish on these boards! Some pubs will also be more than happy to recommend the best drink to have with your meal to make it a truly all round experience. Children’s menus are also becoming more varied and healthier than ever – no more chicken in a basket for the kids!!

32 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Sharing platters are really popular at the moment with people going to the pub in the early evenings for a drink and a quick bite to eat. These usually have something for everyone and is easier than having sandwiches or choosing some side dishes between you. Aside from anything else it makes a pub meal a really social experience – just remember to order enough of the bits that everyone likes the most to avoid any fights! Have a quick look at the pub boards and you will see theme nights which offer just about anything you can think of! There are taster nights which give you the chance to sample many items from the menu which you might normally otherwise not order. There are theme nights from around the world – curry night, Mexican and Tapas to name but a few. There is also the ever popular Steak night. During the summer months many pubs will put on a barbeque at the weekends, often with some sort of live entertainment – usually a local band. On a warm day it can be a real treat for the whole family and saves you the job of doing it at home! Local produce is also a prominent feature in the best pubs. As well as tasting good as it is food which is in season and hasn’t had to travel, it also supports local businesses who supply vegetables, meat and other ingredients. There is nothing better than eating a meal which has been grown and produced locally. So don’t pay too much heed to what you have heard from others, get out there and start trying different pubs for yourself and be brave – try something you’ve never had before, don’t be afraid to deviate from the main menu as any good chef will be happy to cook to your requirements. Bon appetit!

Behind the Name

Spalding Ramblers ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

What could be better than getting some fresh air and exercise while enjoying the beauty of the local countryside? “Some very close friendships have been formed within the group, at least one of which has ended in marriage!”

Non-members are welcome to participate but will be invited to enrol in The Ramblers after completing two walks. Visit www. ramblers.org.uk for more information.

W

ell, that’s just what Spalding Ramblers have been doing since their group was formed back in June 1986. Members meet up twice a month on Sundays for walks of between six and ten miles long, all led by an experienced walker, while in the summer there’s a shorter, Wednesday evening walk to enjoy too. “Rambling is an excellent way of keeping fit and making new friends,” explained group member Judy Chapman. “As well as improving your health and fitness, you’ll also be doing your bit towards protecting our heritage of footpaths, bridle ways and green lanes. “Plus you get to see parts of the local area that you might not even know existed, and will be informed of snippets of the history of the area by the walk leader,” she added. Rambling is a reasonably inexpensive past-time - the main essentials being a good, comfortable pair of walking boots and waterproof clothing. Due to the high price of fuel Spalding Ramblers try to keep their walks within a 45-minute drive of Spalding. And for those who don’t have their own transport, car sharing is actively encouraged. “We stop for a lunch break midway through a walk,

so advise walkers to bring a packed lunch, and perhaps a flask of hot drink,” Judy added. “Rambling is not only about local walking, we also have walking holidays in the UK, in places such as the Isle of Wight, Isle of Mann, Staffordshire, Suffolk and Yorkshire, which are all very popular. “In June of each year we compete against other Lincolnshire ramblers groups for the honour of winning the Goodban Trophy, which is awarded to the team who scores the most points in a treasure hunt on foot.” The group is open to people from the wider area, as well as Spalding, and has a great social side. The anniversary of its first walk is celebrated by a short ramble and picnic each year, while Christmas is marked with a festive meal out. “Some very close friendships have been formed within the group, at least one of which has ended in marriage! “Many of those who took part in the first walk, which was in Bourne Woods, are still members today, some now well into their eighties!” Judy added. “And over the years the group has campaigned for, and contributed to the cost, of two bridges over drains in our area to link footpaths.” Spalding Ramblers programme of walks for 2014 is available from local libraries and the South Holland Centre, Spalding.

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Pets Corner

The Dog Days Of Summer We all love our summertime’s blue skies, barbeques and happy people, but remember to spare a thought for your pets. Our furry friends can really suffer in the heat. Here are some tips to help them cope

1

Ticks and fleas. With the arrival of warm weather come tiny vampires. Help your pet with a good quality flea treatment, because an infestation of fleas is unbearable. Also keep an eye out for ticks that can carry Lyme disease. They live in long grass, and are always looking for their next meal. That could be your pet, or you! Don’t just pull at ticks, you need remove the imbedded head, or an infection may set in. Buy a specialist tick remover that twists out the head. Don’t try to burn the tick off, as this can lead to injuries. It’s good idea to use a spot-on treatment throughout the summer. This enters the blood-stream and kills both pests.

2

Sunburn. Protect your pet’s exposed skin with baby sun-cream, especially if they are lighthaired. White cats and rabbits are especially prone to sunburn on their ears and noses, which can lead to skin cancer.

3

Hot pavements. We all know that dogs (and other pets) die in hot cars, but the pavements get hot too. Even though dogs have tough toe-pads, they may still blister. Walk your dog in the morning and evening, when the pavements have cooled down, and always try to stay in the shade.

4

Heat exhaustion. Your pet is wearing a fur coat, and they can’t remove it, so make sure they stay in the shade on hot days. This includes putting hutches beneath trees, and moving cages away from windows. Try adding ice-cubes to pet water-bowls for a cooling drink they’ll appreciate. Heat exhaustion can kill. The signs are excessive panting, dribbling and unsteadiness. Vet treatment is necessary if you suspect heat exhaustion.

5

Pet Boarding. Summer holidays mean boarding kennels and catteries for our pets. Make sure you read up on exactly what the rules are, to avoid a last-minute holiday cancellation. If you’re struggling to choose, a good tip is that a quality establishment will ask what your pet’s favourite food is, and will suggest you bring toys and a blanket from home, to help them settle in. Pets in boarding facilities get stressed, even if they are expensive all -inclusive resorts. A house-sitting service is worth investigating. They are not as expensive as you’d think, and involve a great deal less stress for your beloved pets. Summer time is great fun for all the family; so make sure your extended family can enjoy themselves too. Remember: Some like it hot – but not our pets.

Crowland Abbey

Crowland Abbey ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

C

Centuries Old Mystery Solved!

rowland Abbey is the parish church of Crowland. Its beautiful ruins are steeped in history, right back to 701AD which a monk called Guthlac decided to make Crowland (then an uninhabited island called Croyland) his home. Other monks soon followed and a monastic community was formed. The abbey had mixed fortunes early in its life, with repeated attacks from the Vikings, fire and earthquake damage all taking its toll. However successive abbots were not put off and the monastery continued to be rebuilt. Pilgrims were drawn to the site and slowly the community around the monastery grew and thrived over the centuries, becoming very wealthy in the process with the land around it being drained to allow the beginnings of the village. However the worst damage was done when the monastery became a victim of Henry VIII’s dissolution of the monasteries in 1539. Following its destruction it became a focal point of the area during the civil war with Oliver Cromwell personally laying siege to the village. A rich history indeed! From there it laid in ruins for many centuries until it was rescued in the nineteenth century and restoration began. As the monastery found itself in regular need of repair and expansion over the centuries, a visit today boasts a real treasure trove of architecture. Each time the monastery was rebuilt, methods of building

and styles changed and this is evident even in what remains. In the church itself there is much to see and luckily its visitors come from all areas and walks of life as recently several visitors unearthed a mystery. Above the chancel at the highest point under the vaulted roof there is a carving of a character who had been silently watching the comings and goings in the Abbey for centuries. He was so far up that when he was pointed out by a young visitor staff had not previously been aware of it and had to use binoculars to take a closer look as it was so high up it was tricky to view with the naked eye. And thus began the question of his identity. Just who was he? And what was he holding in front of him? Many theories were put forward. Was he a crusader holding his shield? Was he a Knight Templar or even an angel watching over the abbey? Speculation was rife but no single theory stuck. The Abbey is fortunate enough to have a new visitor centre which is being launched this summer and the photographer providing images for their website took a photograph of the figure and made an enlargement to get a better look. It once again ignited interest but with a clearer image an historian visiting the church pointed out that he must be a Mitred Abbot, and so rather than holding some sort of shield in front of him he was, in fact, holding

a mitre. To further prove his point the clothing the figure is wearing looks to be an Abbot’s robe. This makes sense as Croyland was of such importance that it warranted a Mitred Abbot who had a seat in the House of Lords. So thanks to the keen eye of its visitors a mystery was found and solved. And it just goes to show that however old and well documented a place is, there is always something new and exciting to be found! The Abbey is open daily with guides on duty from 11am to 3pm and if you have never been it is well worth a visit – you may find yourself returning again and again. Cambridge Weight Plan ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Real People, Real Support, Real Results

“The best part is that every consultant has done the diet themselves so they have personal experience and can understand it from your point of view. We’re always on hand to answer any questions you have or give you some encouragement.”

E

ight years ago Dan Reynolds lost weight through the Cambridge Weight Plan. He was so impressed with the plan he went on to become a consultant. In the time that has passed since then, he has helped over 1200 clients lost 14000 stone between them. We caught up with him to find out why this weight plan work so well for him and his clients. Immediately, Dan offers this advice “Don’t hang about. It really is the best decision you will make. I can’t tell you how often people ask me why they didn’t do this sooner!” Cambridge Weight Plan provides flexible weight management programmes for men and women. management programmes for men and women. It offers soups, shakes, bars, vanilla rice pudding and porridge which can be used as the sole source of nutrition or can be combined with conventional food for more gradual weight loss and weight management. The products are nutritionally balanced and range from 440kcal to 1500+kcal per day. According to Dan, there’s no such thing as a typical client: “I see people from all walks of life and they all have a different reason for wanting to lose weight. For the majority it is for the health benefits but we do have people who want to lose weight for a special occasion. “We always recommend that people see it through to the end as once you have lost the weight you will have learned about the importance of healthy ingredients and portion sizes and so will be able to keep the weight off. The fact that we have a good variety of products means that it doesn’t get boring but sticking to just our products means that you are able to effectively break your old eating habits.“ We ask about the very first meeting and what it entails. Dan explains: “This is where we vary from other

40 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

plans in that the meetings are one to one rather than a group lesson. Your time is yours alone which is important. During that initial session we will talk to you about your lifestyle – what sort of work do you do, do you have children, any medical conditions, things like that. We then go through the plan with you and choose the options we feel are best for you. We keep all our products in stock there and then so you can start that day. It costs around £2 a meal, not bad when you consider your weekly shopping bill! We then meet weekly or fortnightly thereafter to weigh you and take your measurements. “The best part is that every consultant has done the diet themselves so they have personal experience and can understand it from your point of view. We’re always on hand to answer any questions you have or give you some encouragement.” Dan’s final words? “Weight loss is a very personal and individual process but whatever the reason just do it!” Visit www.cambridgeweightplan.com for more information or you can get in touch with Dan to arrange your initial consultation on 07979 756850.

Update and Refresh Your Home ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

It’s amazing how little you have to change in your home to give it a completely new appearance

W

“One of the biggest things you can do to change the look of your home is to declutter.”

ith styles and tastes forever changing, it is easy to feel that the best way forward is to completely redecorate from top to bottom. But there is a quicker, easier and cheaper way of bringing your house up to date – small changes in the places where it matters most. When buying and selling houses you will often hear the phrase “kerb appeal” banded about. It essentially means making your home look appealing from first glance – enticing potential buyers through your door! So if you are looking to give your home a bit of a facelift then the best place to start is the front door. Every time you come and go from the house you see your front door and so do your visitors. It can be surprising what a difference this can make. There’s no need to rush out and buy a new front door. If it is wood then a fresh coat of paint - maybe be daring and try a new colour – can work wonders. If it is a UPVC door then think new door furniture, handles and knockers. Inside, before you change your furniture, try breathing new life into your walls. In the living room a fresh coat of paint on the walls, even in the same colour as you currently have, can freshen it up. Feature walls are becoming more popular – covering one wall in a room with a bold wallpaper or even a mural. If you are keeping your walls plain then changing fabrics and textiles can make a difference. New curtains and blinds can completely transform the look of a room and new cushions can revive a tired sofa. Changing lighting can also give a different ambience to a room. Spotlights, uplights, downlights, lamps and lampshades can all be used to provide comfortable evening lighting. Adding mirrors can also provide light and often makes a room look bigger. For many, the kitchen is the heart of the home and so most of the time at home is spent there. Before rushing

42 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

to replace your kitchen consider painting your current kitchen cabinets. If you’re not feeling brave enough then call in the professionals but changing from a dark wood to a cream colour will mean that you end up with a kitchen which looks up to date without having to remove a single unit! There is also the option to leave the shell of the kitchen the same and replace door fronts and handles. New taps can also look effective. One of the biggest things you can do to change the look of your home is to declutter. This is often easier said than done! Begin with the easy things such as putting winter blankets into storage. Look at areas which are congested and before throwing everything out consider the rest of the space in your house. Use it creatively – take full advantage of nooks and crannies. Are you using the space you have to its fullest potential? Shelves are not just for books! If paperwork is cluttering you up then have a dedicated filing drawer or cabinet so you can keep it all in one place and it is easily accessible. Assess how often you use things – do you really need them? The same goes for clothes, if you haven’t worn them within the last six months then it is time to donate them to charity. And also books you will never read again, DVDs you will never watch again and CDs you have never listened to! They can all go and you won’t even notice! By making small changes as you go and being clever about space, before you know it your house will be transformed without your pocket being significantly lighter.

Hobbies

Fishing ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

The first in a new series on hobbies, this month we look at fishing

“If you don’t fancy the riverbank you will find a wide selection of fishing lakes in the area with good value day rates and most have caravan and camping facilities on site.”

F

ishing is a hobby that anyone can take up and enjoy. Even if you do not want to fish competitively there is still much to be gained from fishing for fun. Speak to anyone who fishes and they will tell you that there is a huge element of relaxation to it. Get away from work or home for the day and fixing your attention on not too much! Fishing as a family or with your friends can be a great use of a day as these days spending time with those you love is becoming increasingly harder to do. If you are fishing with others the inevitable competition which will follow can be great fun. And then there is the chance to be outside and getting some fresh air. You can also take the opportunity to learn not only about your local area but also about the wildlife which inhabits it. All fishing starts with the Environment Agency. Environment Agency rod licences are required to fish local waters. They are obtainable from the Post Office or the local Environment Agency office. An annual licence costs £29 (£72 for Salmon and Sea Trout). You can start fishing as soon as you have paid but make sure you have first read the rules for your local area. Rod fishing byelaws are statutory rules and regulations are put in place by the Environment Agency which protect migratory and freshwater fish stocks, and the fisheries they support from damaging fishing practices. Rod fishing byelaws set out when you can fish (open and close seasons), where you can fish, how you can fish, and what fish you can take.

To find out more about fishing regulations, codes of practice and information on how to stop the spread of invasive aquatic species, that can harm fisheries, visit www.environmentagency.gov.uk/fish 44 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Some fisheries byelaws are local, covering specific waters; others apply to the whole of Anglian Region; and some national byelaws cover all waters in England and Wales. Anyone failing to comply with these byelaws could face prosecution and receive a fine of up to £50,000. Once you have your licence, equipment and familiarised yourself with the rules you have the choice of fishing the rivers or going to a fishing lake. We are lucky enough to live in an area which has a wide variety of fish. In the Welland you will find Bream, Roach, Pike, Rudd, Zander, Gudgeon, Chub, Perch and Carp among others. There is a free stretch to fish which runs through the town centre. If you don’t fancy the riverbank you will find a wide selection of fishing lakes in the area with good value day rates and most have caravan and camping facilities on site. A quick search of the internet will show you the wide range available to you. Herons Cottage in Holbeach is at the side of the Little South Holland Drain. Here you can catch common Carp and Tench. There is also camping and caravanning on site. Lake Ross Caravan Park and Fishing lake is situated on Dozens Bank in West Pinchbeck. Here you can fish Carp, Tench, Roach, Rudd and Chubb. There is also a fully licenced clubhouse and regular live entertainment. Ashleigh House fishing lakes and caravan park can be found on Whaplode Drove. They are well stocked with common, mirror and ghost Carp, Tench, Bream, Roach and Rudd.

Gardening

Summer Pond care ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Ensure your pond is at its very best throughout the summer “It is a wise precaution to place a net over your pond during the summer...”

P

onds make a great addition to any garden large or small. They not only look fantastic but are great for attracting wildlife. A well-stocked pond with both fish and plants can look good all year round but, like most other things in the garden, require more care than usual during the summer months.

Weeds Be wary of your plants overgrowing during the summer as they can be dangerous to your fish. Floating weeds are easily dealt with as they can be removed with a net with minimal disruption. For plants whose roots are out of control this may be a trickier job but it is important to get the job done to prevent further problems. Generally, the more soil or gravel you have at the bottom of your pond, the more you will struggle with your plants firmly establishing themselves. Where possible, when you put your plants in the pond for the first time, try to avoid putting them in with pots of soil. As a rule of thumb, make sure your plants cover no more than half of the surface of your pond.

Water When the weather is hot and sunny water will evaporate from your pond so you need to keep an eye

46 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

on water levels to ensure that your fish have enough oxygen. Regular top ups are recommended however make sure you are not replacing more than a third of the water at a time as this can be just as hazardous for the occupants of the pond as not having enough. If you want to use tap water then most garden centres provide water treatments to make it safe for your fish or if you have a water butt the water from there is best. Remember to check the temperature of the water before you add it – how would you like a cold bath?! Also consider a fountain, waterfall or other water feature to keep the water moving.

Fish If your pond does not already have one, it is a wise precaution to place a net over your pond during the summer. Birds, especially herons, are more active during the summer months and once they have found an easy source of food they will return until there is nothing left. Your pond plants will do a good job of hiding the fish but a net always makes the best deterrent. Birds can also bring disease with them so you will need to keep a closer eye on your fish than during the winter. If you can see that your fish are diseased or have the feeling that something isn’t quite right then head to your local garden centre or aquatic centre as they will not only be able to offer you their expertise but help you to diagnose and treat any disease, hopefully before you lose any of your fish.

Focus on Surfleet

Celebrate Surfleet! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

This year’s Celebrate Surfleet Summer Fete & Dog Show is taking place on Sunday 7th September at Glen Park, which is on Station Road behind the village hall

W

ith hundreds of visitors again expected, the event is open from 11am to 4pm and as usual, entry is free. The fete is the latest event in a series of festivities laid on by the Celebrate Surfleet committee. On June 29th they held a Pirate themed flotilla and Teddy Bear’s picnic. The fete will be opened by Surfleet vicar David Sweeting, who will perform a short service. As well as craft and retail stands there will be lots of games and bouncy castles. If the weather is good there will be a helicopter demonstration and flypast. Also subject to the weather will be a hot air balloon. The top raffle prize at the fete is a ride in the hot air balloon so if it is fine then you could find yourself floating above the villages at the end of the day! There have also been some special guests announced. Colin Young of Bargain Hunt Fame and the famous Antiques house of Golding, Young & Mawer will be in attendance on Sunday September 7th. He will be available to value your antiques and collectables and there won’t be a charge for the valuation so get looking through your cupboards and up in your attic ready to see them on the day. Richard ‘Nooky’ Nauyokas from Bad Lads Army will also be attending. His company, Not all Bad, was originally developed to give young adults an insight into their own abilities and the confidence to achieve the best for themselves and others in their futures. Richard, better known as Nooky, spent 23 years in the British Army, 20 of which were spent instructing. During these years he developed and refined his instructional and motivational manner. Since leaving the Army he has become famous for his role as the fair but firm disciplinarian ‘Corporal Nauyokas’ in ITV’s Lads and Bad Lads Army. Centre ring attractions this year include live music, Morris dancing and much more. The annual Dog Show is being organised by the Boxer Rescue Centre.

Colin Young

As well as all the entertainment there will also be many food and drink stalls to choose from, including Pinchbeck Pig Roast, Laddies Ice Cream and George Adams. There really is something for the whole family so make sure September 7 is in your diary!

The South Koreans have become skilled at making you feel in safe hands when it comes to car production

F

rom the satisfying ‘thunk’ the Santa Fe’s doors make when you close them to the muffled diesel rattle on start up, you soon realise the Hyundai is made of stern stuff. For an SUV with 4x4 credentials it’s fairly economical, returning an average 41.5mpg. It’s an especially comfortable and spacious motor too; it’ll seat five adults and there’s room for two extra little people in the third row of fold-away seats. The sizeable boot is square and low, meaning it’s a doddle to load up. In fact, it’s a perfect family-cumbusiness vehicle. For a biggish car the latest Santa Fe is surprisingly easy to weave through city streets and it will happily tour at 70mph on the motorway all day. The steering is direct and well weighted at all speeds - and there’s only the slightest body roll on bends, but that’s acceptable, given its lofty structure. The gutsy 2.2-litre 194bhp turbo diesel engine comes with a smooth-changing six-speed automatic gearbox, which helps make the motor more than capable of punchy overtaking manoeuvres. In truth, you can have fun if you detour from the straights and take on the twisty country lanes. Of course, being able to cope with a bite of bona fide bucolic driving is how

this Hyundai explains its steep price-tag. With its elevated height, four-wheel-drive and robust body, the handsome Santa Fe Premium has much in its favour to handle the road less travelled. It’s no hardcore mud-plugger but it has the toehold of a traditional 4x4 and the manners of a normal car, while a high level of kit adds more than a splash of splendour. Equipment includes leather upholstery; a sound system with 10 speakers; parking sensors; a rear view parking camera; self levelling suspension; touchscreen satellite

navigation, seven airbags; downhill brake control and hill start assist. As well as the occasional dirt track excursion, the Santa Fe will help you out with, say, caravanning adventures for the whole family. It has an impressive towing capacity of 2,600kg (braked) and, to make life easier, trailer stability assist is part of the gadgetry get-up too.
