Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated
Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellenceâ€?. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.â€? Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.â€? “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. 7KH ODWHVW ' 2&7 UHWLQDO GLJLWDO VFDQQHU KHOSV XV WR Ă€QG WKRVH SDWLHQWV ZKR DUH DW ULVN RI VLJKW SUREOHPV especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.â€? commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. Happy New Year! How quickly did 2015 come and go?! I hope you all had a fun and relaxing Christmas and the New Year’s Celebrations were as fab as you’d hoped. As with the last couple of years we are taking the opportunity to use the January to look forward to the coming year and we are once again using a format which closely follows many people’s New Year’s Resolutions. You’ll find information in the issue about health, exercise, money, holidays and moving house. I reckon they are pretty much the top five resolutions! If you have made your own resolutions this year then good luck – if you can get to the end of January and keep going then you are a much better person than I am, I seem to always give up on them by somewhere around the 5th of January…. Elsewhere in the issue we take a look at proms. If you have a child in Year 11 or Year 13 it may well be that a prom is on the horizon in the summer. Believe it or not your planning should be well underway by now to ensure your children get the prom they are dreaming of. You’ll find a handy list of things which need to be considered and, as always, make sure you leave plenty of time so you are not feeling stressed at the last minute. Whatever your plans for 2016, everyone here at Simply Spalding wishes you a very happy New Year. Enjoy the issue.

Youngsters get Artsathlon medals Artistic youngsters have been awarded medals and certificates for taking part in The Great South Holland Artsathlon. Originally inspired by the London 2012 Olympic Games, The Great South Holland Artsathlon invites children aged from four upwards to take part in arts activities during the summer holidays. This year participants enjoyed over 100 sessions and they were rewarded for their efforts during a special ceremony at the South Holland Centre in Spalding last week. Cllr Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for community, handed out medals and certificates to the delighted children. Participants were awarded points for each activity and these were added up to determine who could win either Bronze, Silver or Gold medals. Activities included visual and performing arts workshops, creative writing sessions and watching shows at the South Holland Centre and Ayscoughfee Hall. Cllr Taylor said: “It was a pleasure to present the medals to the children in recognition of the efforts they put into creative activities during the summer holidays. “I would like to thank everyone who took part, I am sure they all enjoyed themselves.”
War memorial given Grade I listing Spalding’s renowned war memorial in Ayscoughfee Hall Gardens has been upgraded from a Grade II to a Grade I protected listing. The memorial is one of 44 First World War memorials designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens – who is famous for the Whitehall Cenotaph. Historic England made the announcement on Friday, just in time for the Remembrance Service held at Ayscoughfee Hall gardens on Sunday. Seven of Lutyens’ memorials are now Grade I listed – representing half of the total number of all Grade I war memorials in England. Lutyens (1869-1944) is known as architect of the Whitehall Cenotaph and the war cemeteries of the Western Front and designed 44 war memorials for towns and
villages all over England. Spalding’s war memorial commemorates 224 lives lost during the First World War. Lutyens’ tranquil Tuscan pavilion design was chosen above five others, and includes a Stone of Remembrance. Spalding’s MP Francis McLaren was killed in a flying accident on August 30, 1917 and it was his wife Barbara who proposed the memorial. It was unveiled on June 8, 1922. Cllr Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for community, said: “The war memorial provides a lasting legacy for those who sacrificed so much. “We’re delighted that it has secured Grade I listing meaning that it is better protected and will continue to serve as a poignant reminder for generations to come.” Roger Bowdler, Director of Listing at Historic England, said: “Lutyens was a key figure in determining how the dead and missing should be commemorated. “His designs are admired for the universality of their message. His pure architectural forms are mute symbols of grief, the simple inscriptions weighted with sorrow. “These are enduring memorials, which show the power of classical architecture to convey meaning and dignity.”
Help and advice on your doorstep Individuals involved with community groups and volunteering – and those who would like to get involved – are being urged to access free support and advice. Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) provides help, support, guidance and training to established and start-up community groups and projects as well as helping to place would-be volunteers in roles that suit their skills, interests, experience and availability. And with an expanding programme of LCVS Local events – where LCVS officers go out into the villages to provide help and advice on the doorstep of the communities it serves – it has never been easier. Marie Chapman, LCVS senior community development and volunteering officer, said: “Our mission at LCVS is to be at the heart of the communities we serve and we know by taking our services out into our villages we make it easier for groups and individuals to access our support. “We’re here to help all community focused groups and projects from weekly toddler groups to one-off community events for hundreds of people.” LCVS would always advise getting in touch before travelling to a LCVS Local to check the event is going ahead as planned. Some events will only go ahead where appointments have been booked in advance. LCVS is also able to offer advice and support from its bases in Louth, Boston, Spalding and Grantham. Kristina is getting scissor happy Young Kristina Ryan is styling a new career after landing an Apprenticeship at a popular hair salon. The New College Stamford student is seven weeks into her training course at the Charles Barry salon in Corby and is already growing in confidence and skill. She has already completed Levels 2 and 3 in ladies hairdressing and is now studying Level 3 in barbering and hopes to be employed permanently at Charles Barry once her Apprenticeship is complete. “Hairdressing is something I have always wanted to do, so I was really happy when I got offered the job here, said Kristina, 23, from Corby. “I have learned so much already and am getting a lot of experience in things I had never done before, such as styling men’s hair. It was a challenge at first, but I really like it. “I was a little nervous in the beginning, coming into a real life environment, but I feel a lot more relaxed now. The college course is helping me enormously because it’s so relevant to my job here. I gain different things from work and the course, and together they work really well with each other. Caroline Mann owns two Charles Barry salons and The Barbers in Uppingham and
has employed a number of apprentices in the past through New College Stamford. Some have been taken on permanently and are still working in the salons and Caroline believes Kristina will experience the same success. She said: “Kristina is doing brilliantly – she is cutting hair and learning a range of new techniques, so we are very happy with her progress. “She is our third apprentice and is certainly living up to the great experiences we have had in the past. I like taking on apprentices because they can learn the way we want them to work, they get a hands on approach to gaining skills and qualifications and they get to earn a wage. Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to really learn about a profession and whether or not they want to do it.

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages I attended the South Holland Business Awards back in November and as always go away immensely impressed by the range, innovation and sheer determination of our local businesses to succeed and be the best in their field, many of whom are now nationally and internationally renowned companies. Although the South Holland area majors around the agri-food industry, it is pleasing to see businesses outside of that field going so well, such as Lincs Computers picking up the small business of the year award and Kawstore (building and industrial supplies) picking up Business of the Year. A challenge has been put out to have a new category next year for the Business Woman of the Year and I think we shall see more great innovative businesses coming forward in this category. Well done to all the winners. One of the speakers at the awards ceremony was an Army Major in the reserves who astounded many in the audience when he said that the entire British Army could fit into Twickenham Rugby Stadium. Withdrawing from the British Empire is one thing but to be so small to fit into a rugby stadium does make you a little nervous for our future security. Importantly they are helped out by an additional 30,000 reservists, all of whom have regular jobs and work in local businesses. The potential impact on local business if an employee has to go on a tour of duty, which lasts six months, is obvious, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives in terms of training, confidence, a vast array of new skills, be that in Communications, logistics, engineering or fork lift driving and of course management and leadership skills. In a similar vein but at a much younger level, I also recently attended the AGM and awards evening of 2430 (Holbeach) Squadron Air Training Corps who have 30 enrolled cadets supported by volunteer staff. Cadets can get involved in Flying / Gliding, Training which
includes a BTEC in Aviation & Teamwork/ Personal Development, Camps at RAF Valley,RAF Wyton and Folkestone Green Camp, the Duke of Edinburgh Award ( 5 bronze and 1 silver in the last year), Adventure Training (includes indoor climbing wall, orienteering and trips to Windermere among others), monthly sports evenings, athletics, netball and swimming (6 achieved basic swimming proficiency standard), shooting ( several cadets obtained marksman at different levels), First Aid, Fieldcraft and a band. The Holbeach ATC cadets are often seen around the town packing bags, at the Holbeach Town and Country Fayre, military weekends at the Anglia Motel, Holbeach Christmas Fayre and of course on Remembrance Sunday. If only I was still young, what great opportunities this provides for our young people. Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do in this country and there is no doubt we couldn’t survive without them. Police, Fire, Ambulance, Army, Navy, Air Force, Councils, churches, museums, the arts, sports (the recent Olympics highlighted the value of volunteers), CAB, charities in the UK and overseas, voluntary and community groups, conservation groups, zoos, the list is endless. But are we over reliant on volunteers, the same old people doing their bit for society? I suspect not but one thing is sure, with public services being cut to the bone, we will be come ever more reliant on them. Most are happy just to get on with it and do not look for any thanks, just doing their bit. Well I for one would like to say a big thank you to one and all – you do a magnificent job and are the ones who really make Britain Great. If you haven’t yet decided on your New Year’s resolution, why not consider Volunteering? For more information go to www. lincolnshirecvs.org.uk Happy New Year!

Challenging your Financial Consent Order So your divorce has come through, you have your final financial order from the Court which you entered into by consent and you are ready to hit the dating sites and party like you have never partied before. However, what happens if your ex’s circumstances change and you feel that you were conned into entering into the financial Consent Order? Well, as the Order was supposed to be final you will find that Judges are very wary of allowing challenges to them on appeal and you should be warned that your chances of successfully challenging the Consent Order are slim. However, there is some scope for challenging the Order and to do so
successfully you need to challenge the basis upon which the Order was made. Therefore, the challenge should be based on the non-disclosure of relevant facts, fraud and misrepresentation, supervening events or undue influence. However, there are various obstacles which you must be aware of. Firstly, any delay in applying to the Court to challenge the Order can prove fatal. Secondly, there is no court power to vary a lump sum once it has been ordered unless payable by instalments. Thirdly, even if you are able to prove your case you will not succeed if to do so would not make a material difference to the current circumstances of either party and, finally, the Judge will also bear in mind
the costs of litigating so that if the legal costs outweigh the amount in dispute the case would not be allowed to proceed. You must then decide whether to apply to set aside the Order or to appeal the Order. For events arising at or before the Order was made, apply to set aside. For events arising after, you must apply for permission to appeal out of time if it has been more than 21 days (usually) from the date the Judge made the Order. Judges do not want to open the floodgates for fear of what considerable litigation might follow. So be warned, successful cases are, indeed, exceptional, therefore, do not go rushing off to Court simply because the ex has won an Ann Summers voucher at the local raffle and has given it to his new girlfriend.

Advice
What is volunteering? A volunteer is someone who offers to work for free for someone other than a close relative k BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN Volunteers do not get paid, except for outof-pocket expenses. These are intended to make sure that they are not worse off financially by being a volunteer. They may get training needed to do, or to improve, their voluntary work. Examples of out-of-pocket expenses include: • travel • phone calls made from home whilst volunteering • meals • childcare or care of other dependants Voluntary work is often done for charities and not-for-profit organisations. It does not count as voluntary work if you could be paid for your work, but have chosen not to be. Examples of voluntary work include: • helping residents in a homeless hostel • visiting hospital patients • helping to clean up a local conservation area • giving advice in a Citizens Advice Bureau. Unpaid volunteers do not have a contract of employment with the organisation they volunteer for. This means that you cannot be sued by the organisation if you fail to do your work. There is no limit on the number of hours a week you can be a volunteer. This also applies to most people who are getting benefits. However, if you are getting certain benefits, there may be conditions that you have to meet in order to continue getting benefit whilst you are a volunteer. Volunteering and benefits If you are getting some benefits, such as State
Retirement Pension or Pension Credit, you do not need to tell anyone when you take up voluntary work. However, if you are getting other benefits, you may be expected to tell your local Jobcentre Plus office. Volunteering and Jobseeker’s Allowance If you are unemployed and getting Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), there is no limit to the number of hours you can volunteer. It must be reasonable for the person or organisation you’re volunteering with not to pay you and you must meet the following conditions. You must: • tell your local Jobcentre Plus office that you are volunteering • not get paid, except for out-of-pocket expenses, which do not count towards the JSA earnings disregard • continue to actively look for work (volunteering may count towards this, if it improves your chances of finding a job) • continue to be available for work for up to 40 hours a week • be able to be contacted if a job opportunity becomes available • be available to attend an interview within 48 hours and take up work within one week • tell your local Jobcentre Plus office about any payments you get, including any expenses you are claiming back. You may have to show the Jobcentre Plus office receipts for these payments, so you should make sure you hold onto them. Volunteering and sickness benefits If you are unable to work because you are sick or disabled and are claiming one of the following benefits, volunteering should not affect your benefit: • Employment and Support Allowance
• Incapacity Benefit • Severe Disablement Allowance • Disability Living Allowance • Personal Independence Payment. You must receive no payment for your work, other than out-of-pocket expenses. Before starting voluntary work, you should tell your local Jobcentre Plus office what you are intending to do. If you are getting Incapacity Benefit, you must be available to go to work-focussed interviews. You must tell your local Jobcentre Plus office about any payments that you get. Robots Go Wild by ÂŹames Patterson and

2016
This is the third book featuring DI Zigic and DS Ferreira and like the two previous, it set in the Peterborough area. It tells the story of Dawn Prentice who was already known to the Peterborough Hate Crimes Unit. The previous summer she had logged a number of calls detailing the harassment she and her severely disabled teenage daughter were undergoing. Now she is dead - stabbed to death whilst Holly Prentice has been left to starve upstairs. Can Ferreira or Zigic unpick the truth about mother and daughter, and bring their killer to justice?
In book two of the House of Robots series, it’s ‘bot brains versus ‘bot brawn in an all-out war! Sammy HayesRodriguez and his “bro-bot, E, are making new friends every day as E works as his bedridden sister Maddie’s school proxy. But disaster strikes when E malfunctions just in time to be upstaged by the super-cool new robot on the block - and loses his ability to help Maddie. Now it’s up to Sammy to figure out what’s wrong with E and save his family! Reserve your copy today either at Spalding Library, by calling 01522 782010 or via the online catalogue at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ libraries.

School News
Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk
Monkshouse School In literacy we have been reading ‘The Tunnel’ by Anthony Browne and thinking about how to describe the world Rose finds through the tunnel. We used this text as a stimulus for our outdoor learning. We thought of different ways we could create tunnels with a range of man-made and natural materials. Some of us decided to dig a tunnel between two ditches and some of us built over ground tunnels with sticks and plastic sheets. We had great fun getting muddy! Gardening club have been working hard to gather all the seeds from
Ayscoughfee Hall School
the ‘Grow Wild’ wild flowers we planted and grew in the summer term. We had great fun learning how to gather the seeds and store them ready to plant in the spring. The year 3 and 4 children have been working very hard on their ‘Tremors’ projects, focussing on Volcanoes. They then presented their work to their parents. We had a fantastic turn-out for the Halloween Disco at the end of last term with some amazing costumes! Thank you to staff, the PTA and other helpers who assisted with the event.
The children have seen some exciting new changes since their return to school in September. A brand new kitchen, largely funded by the efforts of the PTFA, has been fitted to enable all children from years 2 to 6 to have weekly cookery lessons. The first outings of the year have taken place, with Year 3 children visiting Flag Fen, and the Year 6 children the Galleries of Justice at Nottingham. Year 6 children also enjoyed lunch at Indus, celebrating the end of the 11 plus papers. Year 4 were lucky enough to have a guided tour of The Park at Surfleet as part of their science topic on ‘Habitats’. The children have enjoyed raising money for Breast Cancer and Children in Need and recently were proud to support the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. A Remembrance Assembly was held in the school hall, to which parents were invited, and Year 2 spent the morning after Remembrance Day at Ayscoughfee Gardens as part of their studies on Remembrance Day. Year 6 also completed their Bikeability cycling proficiency course and the whole school were delighted to welcome a huge DAF lorry into school, enabling them all to explore the cab and see how important it is to be aware of the relative sizes of a lorry and a bicycle!
Little Treasures Nursery
For Children in Need we had lots of super heroes, princesses, spidermen and even a Scooby doo! The staff also dressed up in Children in Need merchandise, including a Pudsey onesie! We raised £41.70 and would like to thank all those who supported the cause and donated.
Spalding Parish Church of England Day School Children from Year 3, 4 and 5 at took part in the ALCS 2015 CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Shadowing Competition for students and this year it asked budding young journalists to tell them: “What reading means to them!” Michal Chamera was one of two runners up from over 600 entries. His article was published online at www.alcs.co.uk/ whatreadingmeanstome.aspx and in their newsletter which is sent to over 40,000 writers. What reading means to me
by Michal Chamera Reading is fun and takes me away. When you start you can’t stop. It is like the words block your ears and mouth, you cannot feel anything. It is like you’re the only one around, it teleports you to another world. You forget everything and read and read. I prefer fiction with pictures and not long, boring books. I prefer fiction like Horrid Henry and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. They have a lot of humour, are funny and of course, have pictures.
There are a lot of authors out there and my favourites out of three are Roald Dahl, Francesca Simon and Jeff Kinney. He amazed me with Diary of a Wimpy Kid, most of my school prefer that book and I love it. I would like to thank all the authors for writing books. I would like to thank Conrad Gesser for inventing the pencil and Laszlo Biro for inventing pens. Thank you Cai Lun for inventing paper and thank you to the Greeks for inventing the alphabet that we use today.
Spalding High School Spalding High School finished an exceptionally busy term in the run up to Christmas, which included Fringe Friday, a day to celebrate arts and cultural education. Students were treated to a pop choir, dance workshops and film shorts. Year 11 students entertained with compelling Drama performances, whilst around the corridors buskers could be found alongside popup dance groups and theatre. The Maths department were also 16 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
celebrating after Year 11 student Josie Periam gained a Gold certificate in the recent United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Senior Challenge, with a fantastic mark of 83. The Senior Challenge usually aimed at Year 12 -13 students allowed lower school students to enter making their achievement even more exceptional. Following the successful production of the Sound of Music students throughout the school helped with the festive spirit by
donating 66 boxes to Operation Christmas Child, sending presents to children across the world who may not receive anything.

Weight Management Keeping your weight under control is something we all need to look at throughout our lives. Where do you start? And once the weight is off how do you keep it off?
T
“...don’t add salt to your food you may be surprised to learn just how much is already in some of the food you buy...”

he NHS recommends that men should consume no more than 2500 calories a day and women no more than 2000. It also goes on to point out that most people consume too many calories and should look to reduce it. But how do you know if you are eating too much and what’s the best way to go about reducing your calorie intake? A good place to start is to calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a way of telling if you are overweight or not. There are many websites which contain tools to work this out for you, but if you prefer to do it yourself you need to divide your weight in kg by your height in metres. Divide the answer by your height again and this will give you your BMI. As a guide, a score under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5 – 25 is a normal weight, 25 – 30 is overweight and over 30 is obese. Remember this is just a guide though. Should you feel that you are overweight and want to do something about it then the first thing you should do is speak to your doctor. They will be in the best position to advise you on the safest and healthiest way for you to lose weight. Some people prefer to follow a diet plan. It can be anything from well-established weight loss companies such as Weight Watchers and Slimming World to newer “fad” type diets such as the Paleo diet. Some people prefer to have a few days “detoxing” where they give up what they think are the worst parts of their diet before embarking on a healthy eating kick. Whatever you choose to do you have to commit to it fully else you might find it difficult to stick to longterm. You need to bear in mind that if you lose weight
18 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
and use it as a way to make lifestyle changes when your diet ends chances are you will put all of the weight you lost back on. Look at it as re-educating yourself. If you don’t want to follow a diet but feel that your diet could do with a little tweaking to improve your health then the NHS recommends the following: •
•
•
•
•
Make sure you get your 5 a day, that is 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every day. There is lots of information about getting your 5 a day and what constitutes a portion. Eat more fish. As well as being a great source of protein, oily fish contains Omega acids which are good for your health. Cut down on saturated fats and sugar – you don’t need to spend too much time analysing food labels here, if you think it’s bad for you then it probably is! Ditch the biscuits, sweets and cakes. Also, if you are drinking fizzy drinks take a look at the sugar content. A can of Coke contains around 9 teaspoons of sugar – switching to diet will have a profound effect, or even better if you switch to water! Eat less salt. Again have a look at your labels. If, like me you don’t add salt to your food you may be surprised to learn just how much is already in some of the food you buy so it’s always worth having a look. Get active. OK so this isn’t strictly about food but not only will it increase your fitness but it will help in keeping your weight at healthy levels.

New Year New You
Moving House With more stability in the economy now many people are looking to move house. Whatever your reasons – first time buy, upsizing, downsizing, we look at the top tips for making it the best possible experience for you
T
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
his year could be the year that you take the plunge and move house. You could be leaving home for the first time or moving for the tenth time. You could be looking for something bigger or retirement could be on the horizon and you would like something smaller. When moving house there are two main goals – getting the most money for the property you are selling and getting the best deal on the property you are purchasing. There are things that you can do to influence both of these providing you are prepared to put in the time and effort. Heather Barton from Simply Property shares her top tips on how to get the best offer for your house. • Presentation, presentation, presentation. We can’t stress highly enough how presenting your property well will speed up the sale process. Think about your target market and make sure when people walk through the door they know it is the house for them. If in doubt speak to your estate agent as they will know what purchasers are looking for and what they are not. • Get any little DIY jobs done before the property goes on the market as potential purchasers knock thousands off in their heads when they add up little jobs which don’t actually cost that much. • Keep the front garden and driveway tidy as it is the first thing a potential purchaser will see if they are having a drive around the area to see what properties are available. • When it comes to marketing the property make sure you have good quality photographs and
“Presentation, presentation, presentation. We can’t stress highly enough how presenting your property well will speed up the sale process.”
•
that a floorplan is included with your details. It will allow anyone looking at your details a chance to look at the layout of your property and start thinking how it could work for them. Make sure you get good coverage across as much media as you can – websites, local magazines and newspapers all have their part to play.
When you find the property you would like to buy Heather has some more top tips: • Start by seeing a mortgage advisor. Explore all of your options and decide on budgets so you know what money you have to play with. • Put yourself in a good position to buy. If you are at the point of making an offer make sure you have a mortgage offer in principle in place so that you won’t have to add time to the whole process doing it. If you are looking at something a little different such as a shared equity property then make sure all the paperwork has been completed so you don’t hold everything up. • Likewise, line up the solicitor or conveyancer you are looking to use. Get some quotes and decide whose services you will use. In this way your side of the sale will always be efficient. • Remember that sellers will often look for the person who is in the best position to proceed – someone who has no chain and puts in a lower offer may be accepted over someone in a long chain who offers full asking price. Do all that you can to be that person in the best position and be as flexible as you can. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

IN ASSOCIATION WITH
Pets Corner
Chocolate & Other Household Nasties We like to spoil our pets, and a few treats now and then are fine, but chocolate is toxic as are some other common household products. Let’s take a look Chocolate
Nuts, Fruits and Veggies
Chocolate is toxic, but the problem is dogs love it! Cats will also eat creamy-smelling foods and birds, rabbits or hamsters will pick at anything placed in their cage. You must get your pet to an emergency vet right away if they’ve eaten a large amount of chocolate.
Grapes and raisins cause kidney failure, most nuts are harmful to animals, avocado can cause tremors, and onions, garlic and chives damage red blood cells. Don’t hand over your dinner remains no matter how intensively your pet begs.
Caffeine
Teflon non-stick pans give off a toxic fume if they are burned which can kill birds. Birds are very sensitive to fumes including fly spray.
A small lap of tea, coffee or energy drink probably won’t harm your pet, but larger doses will. Hyperactivity, seizures and collapse may follow. Diet pills can also contain caffeine so lock those away.
Antifreeze Antifreeze can drip onto surfaces that our pets then walk over. It smells and tastes sweet, but it’s extremely poisonous. Be careful where you spray antifreeze and certainly don’t use it to defrost birdbaths or ponds.
Sprays and fumes
Plants Many beautiful flowers are toxic to our pets. Narcissus, hyacinth, rhododendrons and amaryllis are toxic to dogs and cats, so watch out for them chewing on bulbs or bark. Cats don’t chew on many plants but lilies are particularly dangerous for them. If cats brush against lilies and lick off the pollen it can result in death.
“It’s a jungle out there! Stay safe - lock that chocolate away and buy some suitable pet treats...” Garden fertiliser Fertiliser is often made from smelly stuff that dogs love, but it has added chemicals and insecticides that are harmful. Cats will walk and dig in fertilised ground before then licking their feet clean, so net any recently fertilised garden areas (but check daily for trapped hedgehogs or birds).
Money Surprisingly, zinc from coins is toxic to pets. £1 and £2 coins have zinc levels which cause an upset stomach, anaemia and liver damage. Coins are often eaten by dogs who ‘investigate’ their owner’s purse.
Here are the signs of poisoning: • • • • • • • •
Excessive thirst Panting Unsteadiness Salivating Tremors Seizures Hyperactivity or hunching over Collapse

Save an emergency vet number in your mobile now, so you have it to hand. You’ll need to act quickly if your pet shows signs of poisoning but there’s a good survival rate if you seek medical help in time. It’s a jungle out there! New Year New You
Are you getting enough exercise? If we’re asked to be honest, how many of us can say that we exercise as often as we should? Perhaps not as many of us as there should be!
A
new year’s resolution to do more exercise is all too common but how do you know you are getting enough, and once you’ve started on January 2 how do you make sure you are still exercising the same time next year? We all know the benefits of exercise, as well as keeping your body in good shape it reduces your risk of major illnesses such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. It can also extend your life. But that doesn’t seem to be enough for us when the pull of a sedentary lifestyle and junk food is stronger than ever. So the place to start should be determining just how much exercise we need each week to stay healthy. The amount of exercise you need to do each week depends very much on you age. Assuming you are generally well the NHS has set out the following guidelines (full details can be found on their website, www.nhs.uk): Children under 5. The guidance here is once little ones start to move, let them move! Toddlers should be active for at least 180 minutes (3 hours) a day. Those of us who have toddlers will know how easily done this is! Children aged 5 – 18. Children in this age bracket should have 60 minutes a day of exercise. Adults aged 19 and over. Adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity every week with exercise on at least 2 days working the major muscles, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity with the strength exercises above or a mixture of the two. Now you know the minimum amount of exercise you need, what is the difference between moderate and vigorous activity? Moderate activity is something which leaves you a little out of breath and elevates your heart rate. Brisk walking, riding a bike and mowing the lawn are all examples of moderate exercise. Vigorous activity leaves you out of breath and aware that you have done some exercise! Jogging and running, swimming and aerobics are examples of vigorous activity.
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN Muscle strengthening activities include lifting weights, circuit training, running and aerobics classes. Defining levels of activity and the type of activity you need to be doing is all well and good, but once you have committed to changing your lifestyle and exercising more, what do you need to do to ensure that a week after you begin you find yourself back on the sofa having given up? It seems the trick to seeing something through is to begin by defining exactly what it is that you are trying to do. In other words you need to set yourself a target. It shouldn’t be huge and you should set yourself goals along the way to keep yourself interested. So rather than saying “I want to run a few miles” you need to set that as the goal and your targets along the way should increase, such as “week 1, begin with a five minute run” and increasing until you reach your goal. Where possible you’re your routine so it doesn’t become boring and make sure your targets fit around your lifestyle, that is, if you work from 9-5 you will need to schedule your exercise outside of those hours. Whenever you hit your targets you should give yourself a reward so you feel an incentive to keep going. It is said that once you have repeated an activity for 21 days it becomes habit so if you can stay motivated for a month then exercise will become habit rather than something you have to think about having to do.
“...you need to set yourself a target. It shouldn’t be huge and you should set yourself goals along the way to keep yourself interested.”

New Year New You
Looking after your money Many of us begin the new year with a bit of a financial hangover after the excesses of Christmas but what can you do to make your money work harder for you in 2016?
M
any companies offer credit, be it in the form of a mortgage, store card, credit card, catalogue, loan or pay day loan. If you have any of these forms of credit then it is worth an occasional check to make sure you are receiving the best deals and not paying more than you perhaps could be. Whether or not we have ever used credit we all have a credit file which contains a “score” and it is this that companies refer to when deciding whether or not to offer you a credit facility. While there is no universal method for deciding if you are credit-worthy there are some things you can do to give yourself a boost in the eyes of the lenders. The better your credit history the better deals you will be offered so it is worth taking some time to make sure you qualify for them! Credit can be a bit of a vicious cycle as if you have just a little credit history it can be as bad as having a poor one which makes it tougher to get credit – when you are young and starting out it is hard to get a credit card, for example, because you have never had one, a Catch 22 if there ever was one! So if you’ve never had credit, how do you start? There are some things you can do to boost your credit score which don’t actually involve applying for credit. The easiest thing you can do is to register to vote. A quick visit to www.gov.uk will see you on your way. You can also check your credit files by speaking to one of the three major credit agencies – Experian, Equifax or Callcredit. This will reveal what kind of shape your file is in and you can check it for inaccuracies. Checking this information before you apply for any kind of credit will help you to avoid any rejections which will sit on your file for a year. If you already have a credit card have a look at the interest rate. If it is high then you should have a shop around and see if you can find a card with either a lower interest rate or a good introductory offer such as 0% on balance transfers or purchases for a set amount of time. To get your best chance of being approved for a new card you can check your chances of success
k BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
by using an eligibility calculator. These are free online tools and, whilst they cannot guarantee a successful application (each lender uses different criteria) they will give you an indication of your chances. Changing your mortgage is something that not too many people consider. They think of redemption fees, arrangement fees and a whole lot of paperwork. This isn’t necessarily the case and if you are able to find a mortgage with a better interest rate than you are currently paying you could save yourself thousands over the life of the mortgage. If you have little experience in the area then you could use a broker who will have details of mortgages from many lenders. They will know the process well as well as your chances of success. If you are happy with your current provider it might be worth a chat to see if they have any other mortgage products that might benefit you. If you are in any doubt or feel like you are in a bit of a mess when it comes to your finances take the opportunity to sit down with your bank or financial adviser who will be able to use their knowledge to get you in the best possible financial shape.

New Year New You
Top Holiday Destinations for 2016 Everyone looks for something different in a holiday, it might be a relaxing beach holiday or an adventure packed fortnight away. Whatever you are after there are some top destinations waiting for you in 2016
H
ands up if you go to the same holiday destination every year. It’s something that loads of us do as once we find a destination we love, why wouldn’t we go back! Whether it’s a destination in the UK or abroad we know what we are going to get and we can relax way in advance knowing we are going to have a good holiday. But with the new year comes an opportunity to try lots of new things, so why not try a new destination? Or a completely new type of holiday all together? If you love a sunshine holiday why not try the opposite and go skiing? Many travel agents will book the whole package for you so no experience is necessary! As well as all of the standard holiday-type reservations such as flights and hotel an agent can also book ski and equipment hire, ski-school and anything else you might need. Grab your brochures (or head online) and decide where you would like to try and shortlist – your travel agent will be able to recommend resorts based on your needs. If you like to split your holiday into a series of city breaks each year you could make a switch and take a cruise. You could take in a number of cities over your break, some which may be completely new to you as well as taking in the experience of all there is to offer on a cruise ship. You can take your travels to almost anywhere in the world, and while you still get the enjoyment from being in a city you could quickly find yourself a new favourite.

“Adventure holidays offer a totally different kind of relaxation to a beach holiday so it could be a completely new experience for you.”
Adventure holidays your thing? Be brave and book a beach holiday! I’m not recommending you spend 7 days on a beach but perhaps take things at a slower pace and spend half of your time at a resort and the other half off exploring your surroundings. Adventure holidays offer a totally different kind of relaxation to a beach holiday so it could be a completely new experience for you. Working holidays might sound like a total nightmare but imagine heading out to America and spending your time on a working ranch. It’s not your everyday kind of holiday and the memories would last a lifetime. Once again speak to a travel agent as they will know which destinations are best for your levels of experience. How many people can go off and be a cowboy for a fortnight?! Blow the budget! If your holidays are big budget affairs then a safari could tick all of the boxes. Whether it’s Gorillas in Rwanda or watching wildlife at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro there is no other experience like it on earth. Once again speaking to an agent with experience of safari or indeed an agent who deals solely with them is your best starting point.

Proms
Plan ahead for the night of your dreams What sounds like a fun party for your 16 or 18 year old can quickly descend into panic if you don’t prepare properly with them
P
“Limousines, classic cars, sports cars, horse and carriages and open top buses are slowly taking over from the taxi and in our area we even see people arrive on the back of tractors!”
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
roms have very quickly become a big deal in this country. A BIG deal. Years ago there used to be a small party, if any, for school leavers to wish them well as they embarked on the next stage of their lives. Now these events can rival the biggest of charity balls. And along with that comes the price tag. School councils, PTAs and prom committees work tirelessly each year to raise the money needed to put on a great night for all concerned and fair play to them, if you’re going to have a send-off then do it properly! While all of the committees are beavering away in the background to organise the prom itself there is much preparation to be done from those who are attending. While it may seem straight forward, those who provide prom services can be booked up very quickly so the earlier you can make a start the better. Many of the prom dress providers need their orders in from January to give them time to order in the dresses, make any alterations required and hold fitting sessions to make sure the prom dress is perfect. January feels like an eternity away from July but it’s lead times like this that can catch you out. If dress shopping is top of your list make sure you do it soon! Prom dresses can range in price and if you are looking to go all out then you need to make sure the dress you pick is perfect for you. Prom dress retailers are always happy to book you an appointment to go and look through the dresses, try any on and find the right style for you. Suit hire is also busy so even if you go at this point just to get measured up it will help you down the line. Beauticians and hairdressers book up fast, especially mobile ones so make your enquiries early.
Many girls like to have a practice session with both their hairdresser and make-up artist so booking as soon as you can will make sure you have enough time to decide on the right style for you. Everyone likes to arrive in style and every year we see pictures of people arriving in increasingly lavish transport. Limousines, classic cars, sports cars, horse and carriages and open top buses are slowly taking over from the taxi and in our area we even see people arrive on the back of tractors! If you can think of a new way to arrive you can do it! But be quick! Prom time is a busy time for vehicle hire. Getting as much done as you can as early as you can will stand you in good stead. Having everything in hand will mean you can sit back and really enjoy the run-up to the big event and make it a stress-free experience for all concerned. Of course, you might not want to look too hard at the bill you end up with but hey, it’s a big night for your sons and daughters so that’s for another day….

verything about the new Peugeot 308 GTI is so electrifying right from the minuscule, sporty steering wheel to the grip the car has around corners. I really feel Peugeot is back on track with its contribution to the hot-hatch market. Way back in the 205 GTI days the French car maker had that particular market sewn up – and the 205 was, and still is, an icon in the motoring world. The 308 GTI will become a legend too; no doubt about it. It has the looks, feel and performance of a true celebrity as well as all the safety gadgetry you need for modern day motoring. My test car looked superb cloaked in a metallic ‘Magnetic Blue’ paintjob, combined with dark leather effect and Alcantara sports seats. The 18 inch alloys appeared satisfyingly sizable against its medium sized, muscular body, and its double chrome tailpipes looked ‘the dog’s’.
36 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
“Apart from track days, where do you get as much fun”? That’s what my mind kept reciting each time I got behind the wheel of this exciting motor.” On starting the engine, the 1.6-litre turbo petrol lump, pinched from the RCZ-R sports coupe, has a willingness to rev, and once you engage first gear and take off, you know this car is not your usual motor. For a start, the gearshifts feel precise and jaunty, and the car is eager – it’s like a dog straining at its lead until it can find an open stretch. Then, when you do find a suitable uncluttered bit of road, you can set the 308 GTi free. That’s when it sits back on its haunches for a moment before launching into a scorching attack on the asphalt. The 248bhp is certainly apparent and the 0-62 mph comes in just 6.2 seconds, climbing where legal, (German autobahns calling?) to 155mph. This 308 is certainly the
embodiment of an exciting new direction for Peugeot. No surprise then that there has been an incredible and positive response to the new car, with plenty of orders so far. The 308 also obtained five stars from Euro NCAP, certifying its safety credentials. So, if you still want hatchback practicality but you are also after a uniquely intuitive and pleasurable driving experience, stop off at your local Peugeot dealer and take the 308 Gti for a test drive. You won’t be disappointed.
