Our Vision
Welcome to the January issue Happy New Year! Welcome to the first issue of 2019! A new year is an opportunity to reflect on the passing year as well as being full of anticipation and excitement for what is to come. In our household it will be an exciting one as our son will be starting school in September which I am very excited to see him grow and learn new skills but at the same time know I will lose a part of him, his innocence and the freedom that comes with no strict routine every day! 2018 has been a busy one for us, we have made the most of the beautiful summer with a camping trip, days at the coast, a holiday to Fuerteventura and plenty of adventures closer to home be it picnics at the park, feeding the ducks or days out at a farm. We are definitely a family that likes to pull on their wellies and get out and about. We have got a few trips planned for 2019, so before school starts we have plenty to look forward to and keep us occupied. Back to the issue and we are trying to inspire you with ideas to either move or improve your home, get fit and healthy as well as kick back and relax. Annette from The Village Midwives offers some thought provoking life changes to make for a more peaceful year, Tim test drives the Mercedes-Benz A class and we look at owning a pet. If you can are struggling to make one new years resolution and want to help the area you live please try to think about where you spend your money; be it for fruit and veg, bread, meat, a new fence, repairs to your house or buying clothes or cosmetics. If we all made a conscious effort to support our independent shops and traders we can dramatically change the local economy, investment in the high street and improve the area we live. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and once again wish you a happy new year!

Millions Shared Thanks To Dividend Card Shoppers around the county have enjoyed an extra £62.5 million in their pockets over the last two decades thanks to a dividend card that’s reached its 20th birthday. The Lincolnshire Co-op dividend card marked an important step when it launched in 1998 – the same year Google was founded and film Titanic earned 14 Academy Award nominations. Previously, customers collected stamps as they shopped, which were kept on rolls at the tills. These stamps could be saved up in a book and then spent on goods in the Society’s outlets. The card meant customers could instead collect dividend with a simple scan at the tills, and it still has pride of place in wallets, purses and pockets 20 years later. Dividend collects on a members’ card each time they shop, which can then be spent in store, and at the end of each year members also receive a dividend bonus. This year Lincolnshire Co-op members are benefitting from £4.1 million of dividend which has been paid back onto their cards, including a share of a £1.9 million bonus on Saturday 1st December. That’s compared to £1.5 million shared with members in 1999, a year after the card was launched, along with a bonus of £250,000 divvied up between them. And altogether more than £62.5 million has been shared with members since the card launched that’s enough to buy 31 million boxes of Gadsby’s mince pies or 7.7 million bottles of co-op prosecco. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Membership Manager Richard Whittaker said: “We’re incredibly proud that our dividend card has reached this 20-year milestone. “Last year we launched a new key fob and dividend card app, making it easier than ever to collect and spend dividend and giving members three ways to spend their dividend bonus on December 1st. “I’d like to thank all our customers for being part of Lincolnshire Co-op, and I can’t wait to see what the next 20 years have in store.” The Lincolnshire Co-op dividend card, key fob and dividend card app help members get more in lots of other ways. They act as tickets to fun-packed member only events, such as the recent Society’s free Christmas food tastings in North Hykeham, Morton near Bourne and Market Rasen. Each time a member shops with their dividend card, a donation is also made on their behalf to local good causes through the Society’s Community Champions scheme. Almost £545,000 was raised for more than 230 groups in this way last year. To become a member, pop into a Lincolnshire Co-op store and ask for an application form or visit www.lincolnshire.coop/applynow

Advice
If something you ordered hasn’t arrived If you bought something from a business to be delivered, it’s the seller’s responsibility to make sure the item is delivered to you. If the seller used a courier, they should chase the courier to find out what’s happened to your order - it’s not your responsibility. Check the delivery address you gave the seller. Then contact them and ask where your order is. If the seller claims they’ve delivered it or don’t know where it is, you can ask for a redelivery. You might be able to get a refund in some circumstances. If your item left with a neighbour or somewhere else has gone Under the Consumer Rights Act, you can ask the seller to deliver the item again if the item wasn’t delivered either: •by an agreed date •within a reasonable time - usually within 30 days You can use our template letter to write to the seller.
If you want to write your own include these lines: “Failure to deliver within a reasonable time and after the agreed deadline is a breach under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Time is essential. Please deliver the item without undue delay. “ If you want to cancel You can cancel and ask for your money back if you don’t get the item either: •within 30 days of buying it •on the date you agreed with the seller - if it was essential to receive it by then (for example, for an event) •on the date of the second chance delivery you agreed with the seller What to put in your letter What you write will depend on the circumstances of your order

and if an essential delivery date was agreed. A delivery date is essential if you told the seller you needed your delivery by a specific date. An item can also be considered ‘essential’ if it’s obvious from the circumstances. For example, a wedding cake that was ordered for the day of a wedding. Tell the seller that what has happened to your order is “a breach of contract under the Consumer Rights Act 2015” if you either: •told the seller the delivery date was essential and they didn’t meet it •agreed with the seller a delivery date which wasn’t essential, and a second delivery date also wasn’t met •didn’t agree a delivery date with the seller and a second chance to deliver wasn’t successful Use the line: “I am asking for a refund and expect a full repayment within a reasonable time.” If you’re not happy with the seller’s response If the seller refuses to redeliver the item or give you your money back, you can take your complaint further. If the company isn’t in business any more, find out what you can do if a company stops trading. If you think the seller has broken
the law You can report the seller to trading standards - for example, if they took your money and refused to deliver the item. Trading Standards may investigate but won’t usually be able to get you your money back. If you need more help If you ordered something from a private seller, you can contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline. Return faulty goods f something’s gone wrong with an item you’ve bought, you may be entitled to a refund, repair or replacement. It doesn’t matter whether you bought the item new or second-hand - you’ll still have rights. You’ll have legal rights if the item you bought is: •broken or damaged (‘not of satisfactory quality’) •unusable (‘not fit for purpose’) •not what was advertised or doesn’t match the seller’s description You won’t have any legal rights if: •it was damaged by wear and tear, an accident or misuse •you knew about the fault before you bought the item •you’ve just changed your mind

Boston College Boston College has been celebrating non-stop this November with an amazing number of student successes! The month started with Brandon Pointon being named as a finalist in the South Holland Business Awards ‘Apprentice of the Year’ category. The Level 3, Supporting Teaching and Learning (STLIS) Apprentice who works at Wygate Park Academy in Spalding, was nominated for the award to recognise his hard work and commitment to the school. Speaking of Brandon’s nomination Matthew James, Boston College Apprentice Assessor for STLIS, said, “Brandon goes above and beyond in his apprentice role to ensure the continued high quality education for his learners.” Brandon attended the business awards held at the PSP Offices in Spalding and was treated to a threecourse meal. The ‘Apprentice of the Year’ was a hard category to judge with some well-deserved finalists, and on the evening, Brandon walked away with ‘Highly Commended’. Another apprentice success came in the form of Plumbing Apprentice Jake Edwards, who was named Student of the Year at the recent CIPHE Student of the Year Awards. Jake, who works for his father’s company, was nominated for the award by his lecturer, Sergio Afonso. Speaking of Jake’s win, Sergio said, “Jake has been a remarkable learner over the past two years. He has developed an outstanding skill with accuracy and precision, with an eye for detail. It has been a pleasure teaching Jake and I wish him all the
best for the future.” Jake walked away with a one year free membership to the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering, as well as a goodie bag from Pegler Yorkshire, Graham Plumbers Merchant and Aqualisa. As well as Apprenticeships, the Computing department have also been celebrating this month with full time student, Joseph North competing in the finals of the World Skills Web Design category. Joseph took part in the threeday competition held at the NEC in Birmingham after winning the local regional heats. Joseph worked incredibly hard learning an entirely new skills set for the competition, and was up against some hard competition in the form of university level students. After an outstanding three days, Joseph achieved ‘Highly Commended’ at the competition, and came away with the determination to return next year. The celebrations don’t stop there – they will be running straight through to Friday 30th November with Boston College’s very own Vilma Gedvygience. Vilma, works within the College’s Apprenticeship Team, and has been named as a finalist in the Lincolnshire Public Service Apprentice of the Year (Level 2 Category), and will be attending the awards ceremony at the end of the month at the University of Lincoln. If you are interested in joining our success, click ‘Course’ at the top of this page to find out about all of the courses available at Boston College.

The end of the first term is rapidly approaching and children at Ayscoughfee Hall School are busy preparing for Christmas. Early Years and Years 1 and 2 are excited about their Christmas productions and we look forward to welcoming visitors from Georgian Court and Tanglewood to see these, as well as past staff and even two ex-pupils who were at the school in the 1930s. Kindergarten had a visit from four baby hedgehogs and were delighted to be able to stroke them and ask questions about how they were cared for. We held our usual Remembrance Assembly and children in Year 2 visited the War Memorial in Ayscoughfee Gardens.
Year 6 meanwhile had an interesting and enlightening visit to the Council Offices and Chamber where they were able to meet three local Councillors and find out about different levels of local government. Children from Reception upwards were excited about having the opportunity to sit in the cab of an articulated lorry and experience for themselves the sheer scale of the cab and trailer, particularly in relation to themselves and a bike. We were all delighted that last year’s Year 2 Art Club and last year’s Year 3 class were runners up in their categories in the National ISI Art Competition. Particular congratulations go to Heidi for her ‘Autumn Dish’ which won first prize in the 3D Art class.

Mini Police November was a very busy month for our Mini Police across Spalding and South Holland, with lots of events, topics and engagements on the calendar both in school and in the wider community. One of the biggest events that our Mini Police have taken part in to date was Remembrance Parade, with our teams taking part in parades both in Spalding and Holbeach. Over 50 of our Mini Police linked in with Police Cadets, looking incredibly smart as they lined up and marched within the parades. Within schools, Lincolnshire Mini Police have been supporting #Antibullying week. Our Mini Police were asked to think
about different types of bullying, the ways in which it occurs, where and when it happens, and what the consequences were for both the victim and the offender. The Mini Police were tasked to use their new-found knowledge to deliver it to their classmates, by whatever means. We saw some great Powerpoint presentations, roleplays and speeches delivered. Alongside this, Holbeach Primary Academy Mini Police have been supporting the Lincolnshire Police #Fatal4 Road safety campaign. Accompanied by their local Neighbourhood Policing team, they conducted roadside checks of motorists in Holbeach. A total of 10 motorists were
stopped and spoken with by our Mini Police regarding their speed or not wearing seatbelts. The consequences of speeding and/or not wearing seatbelts were highlight to motorists by the Mini Police. As this is the last article before Christmas, on behalf of our Mini Police and Lincolnshire Police, I would like to take this opportunity to say Merry Christmas! We have lots of new topics coming up in January, and look forward to sharing them.

Village
Tails By Jo Wright Put your best paw forward! It’s time to take a tour of one of our beautiful surrounding villages with a well-loved Labrador.
W
oof woof! Wishing you all a very merry canine Christmas and a happy hound new year! A big bark to Santa Paws too! 2018 was perfect for this puppy, and 2019 is shaping up to be pretty special too. Why? Walkies! So far, I’ve explored some lovely villages, and my human tells me we’ll be tottering through some towns soon, too. It’s a treat to look around our local area, not to mention the sniffs for my nose and the friendly pats for my head. You know, there really is nothing finer than getting out into our clean country air and going for a stroll. Have you ever seen a dog walking without wagging? It’s nose down, tail up and off we
jolly well go. Bliss! And walking is so good for you humans holding onto the lead too. My own human likes to quote the saying ‘the only run you regret is the one you didn’t do’, as she hurtles

out of the door to tear around a 10k course. And the same is true of walking too. Well, alright, apparently you humans aren’t quite waterproof like me. You may not be too chuffed if you return from a little trip with your clothes dripping with rain. But a bit of drizzle aside, getting outdoors really can’t fail to put a skip in your step and a smile on your face. Trust me – a daily walk with or without a fourlegged friend would make your tail wag, if you had one! You’ll see the seasons change, smell the flowers (roses around our way!), feel leaves crunch under your feet/paws, enjoy the sun on your back, and meet people too – people who become your friends sometimes. All this for free! So come on chaps, let’s all get our paws in the great outdoors – and hopefully I’ll see you soon.
Until next time, your friend,
Otis

2. Understand relationships you thought you’d have are different than the ones you actually have. We must accept the person that we are and the way other people are too. As time goes on, we continue to learn that things don’t always go as planned — actually, they pretty much never do. And that’s okay. People are on their own journey and as much as you want them to be with you on yours, that isn’t always how it’s supposed to be. You can’t love someone enough for the two of you.

3. Let go of the idea that you can control others’ actions. We only have control over ourselves and how we act; you can’t change another person, so don’t waste your time and energy trying. I think this is the biggest factor that pushes people to hold onto unhelpful behaviours, like the need to please. We think, “If only I do everything for everyone, they’ll never get mad at me/they will accept me/they will love me.” Wrong! 4. Don’t live in chains when you have the key. We live with self-limiting beliefs that we let

1. Learn Forgiveness. Resentment and unwillingness to forgive will keep you locked in the past and prevent you from moving forward with your life. When you forgive, you aren’t doing it for the other person; you’re doing it for yourself. Forgiving someone doesn’t mean you accept what they did to you, but rather than it doesn’t control you anymore.

define who we are. We think, “I could never do that!” or “I could never make that happen!” If you truly believe that, you’ll never accomplish your goals. Open up your mind and believe in yourself. There will be many people who tell you that you can’t do it. It’s up to you to prove them wrong. There is literally nothing you can’t achieve if you want it badly enough. When it feels too scary to jump, that’s exactly the time to do it. 5. Be patient. There is truth in the adage ‘good things come to those who wait’. Patience is a skill and in today’s world we are driven to want things quicker, sooner, bigger. The Universe knows what it’s doing…have faith and be patient. Things that are meant for you will be yours. This can be infuriating when you feel there is something you want so badly, you can’t wait. Pay attention to things that cause you this pain, they are opportunities for learning. 6. Live for today. What if you were told you were dying? What would you do to make yourself happy? Well, the truth is, you ARE dying. We are all in a queue shuffling along until we leave. What you do while you’re standing in the queue is only down to you. Eat the good food, tell the secrets in your heart, make connections with the people you love. Others will love you all the more for it. Be brave.

Family life
What’s the best pet for your kids?
I
t’s an exciting time — your family is about to get bigger! Soon there will be somebody barking, meowing or even hopping around your house, keeping the kids company and making lots of memories. But before you get sucked into a flurry of new pet selfies, there are a lot of things to consider when bringing a new pet home. First and foremost, the family should take a look at their timetable to ensure that the pet will be adequately cared for and they can meet the pet’s individual needs. For example, while cats may not require as much work as a dog, the litter box needs to be cleaned every day, brushing and nail clipping are required, as well as mental stimulation, which includes play. Dogs require training, exercise, socialisation with animals and people, as well as mental and physical stimulation.” Children will often convince the parents that they will care for the pet and while their intentions are good, after a few months and a busy calendar, the child may lose interest in the ‘tasks’ that they promised and the responsibility is back on the parents! So ultimately you need to ask if you are prepared to care for your pet for the longterm. Dog No two dogs are the same, so take your time and find a good match. Every dog is an individual with a unique personality, whether a dog is well-mannered around children and babies isn’t all to do with the dog’s breed, it it’s more about whether the dog has been properly socialised with children early on. Small dogs are not necessarily
the best choice for children, young children tend to think small dogs enjoy being picked up, carried, hugged, dressed up, etc. Children need to learn that dogs should not be treated like a toy or stuffed animal. Considerations: Are you the traveling type? The family that wakes up on a Saturday morning with a plan to spend the day out and about needs to think about how your dog will fit into this picture. Dogs need regular exercise, grooming and training, and they can’t be left alone for extended periods of time. As a result, a dog may not be the best pet for your family if no one is home during the day — unless you’re prepared to hire a dog walker or send your pup to doggy daycare. Cat As any cat lady will tell you, cats are independent creatures. While one kitty might be the biggest cuddle bug you’ve ever met, another may prefer a more solitary life (with regular servings of food, please!) Like dogs, cats do require responsibility — litter box duty will become some lucky person’s regular job — but the good thing about felines is that they may afford you a little more freedom. They need food, water, care and attention on a daily basis but leaving them overnight is definitely easier to do. Considerations: Cats can bite or scratch when they’re not enjoying certain situations, so it’s a good idea to give your child a crash course in “Kitty Etiquette. Rabbit Rabbits are active and social, and they need plenty of stimulation or they can potentially get bored and
destructive. If you plan to let your bunny explore your home you’ll need to do some serious bunny-proofing! They require a rather large enclosure to dwell in, partly because they can grow in size as they age. Considerations: Like cats, rabbits can be quirky and some don’t like to be carried around, which may be difficult for children to understand. Animals need a break from children and they must be allowed quiet time so they are not overwhelmed with too much handling. Guinea pig Snuggling and exploring are some of a guinea pig’s favourite pastimes, so they’ll need time out of their cage every day. Regular responsibilities will include grooming, cage cleaning, and having supplies at the ready. Supplies for one guinea pig is a regular financial commitment and that could potentially double should you get a second guinea pig, which is recommended for companionship reasons. Considerations: They can be easily startled, so kids will need to learn how to behave around these adorable animals before they become a part of the family. Lizard If your family has a particularly busy schedule and the desire for a relatively quiet pet, you might consider a lizard since they can be fairly low-maintenance. While the habitat and feeding needs of lizards — which can have long lifespans — vary by type and can be pretty specific, most don’t require extensive grooming.
Considerations: Because some lizards are more delicate, an older child may be better at being gentle with them. Hamster Hamsters are nocturnal so only night owls will really get to see this critter in action. They have a relatively short lifespan, about two to three years, so keep in mind that your kids might get a lesson in dealing with the loss of a pet sooner rather than later. Considerations: Adult supervision is recommended when a child younger than 8 handles a hamster because, like guinea pigs, they can be startled and even bite. Younger children may not be capable of making a hamster feel secure. Fish Often regarded as the perfect first pet for kids, fish are fascinating family members to watch, no matter your age. Feeding them daily and cleaning out their tanks will be on a caregiver’s to-do list. The frequency of tank cleaning depends on a few factors, like the kind of fish you have, but generally it will need to be cleaned every two weeks. If your family life is too hectic for a dog or even a cat, these underwater friends can make great pets. Considerations: The positives about fish are endless: their colours and swimming patterns can soothe, they’re quiet, they don’t require a lot of space, they don’t shed — but they still need care and attention, some more than others. Overall pets can be a great addition to any family, they can teach children about compassion, care and responsibility but ultimately they are a commitment and therefore need careful consideration.

Pollywiggle Cottage Pollywiggle Cottage is a charming 3 bedroom Victorian cottage in the popular coastal village of Heacham available for short breaks and holidays. Just over an hour’s drive away it really is the gateway to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.
T
he cosy cottage built in 1882 sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (king, double & bunk) plus we have a cot for a baby. We welcome well behaved dogs and have tried to supply everything you will need for babies and pets - travel cot, high chair, baby monitor, dog crate, dog bowls etc. On sunny days the south facing enclosed garden is a great place to relax with table and chairs as well as a BBQ. Or on those winter nights you can warm up in front of the open fire. There is also complementary wifi & parking to the rear of the property. All prices include a full clean before and after your visit as well as linen and towels - you will just need your bikini and beach towels! The Local Area Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. It’s a 20-30 minute stroll along the promenade into Hunstanton where you will find an array of restaurants, amusements, fair rides, SeaLife Centre, swimming pool and much more. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern
England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, McColls, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast. Pollywiggle Cottage is always well reviewed and every tripadvisor rating is either 4 or 5 stars! Here’s what our guests say: “Stayed for 4 nights in April with 13 month old daughter and our dog. Perfect little cottage in a handy location. Well equipped for babies, with high chair, travel cot, video monitor, black out blind and even toys! Shops, bakery, butchers, Indian/Chinese/ chippy takeaways all in walking distance as is the beach. Handy to have its own parking (all be it a bit tight for two cars). Nice safe enclosed garden for the dog and dog bowls & blankets provided. We even got amazing weather! Thank you.” “We have just returned from another wonderful weekend at the beautiful Pollywiggle cottage. We found the owners really have thought of everything you may need to make the stay feel like home from home. If your traveling with children they have all the essentials and more! There’s a toy box in the children’s room which kept our 3 entertained for hours. A baby monitor, stair gates, blackout blind, bed
rail.. you name it, it’s there! They even have the fur babies covered too with dog bowls, crates and balls! The cottage is very clean and tastefully decorated. We loved having the open fire roaring away on a cold winter evening! It really is the perfect place to warm up and relax with a glass of wine after a chilly afternoon walking on the beach. There are a few pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. We can highly recommend the Spice garden for an evening meal and the Bushel and Strike for a pint. The Bushel is very dog friendly and has a children’s playground. We would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return in the summer.” “Second stay at the property. It’s just so cosy and lovely. Great location and the owner is very friendly and helpful. Perfect for a break away with your dogs. Quiet comfortable and clean :-) planning to go back next year too. Love it Thanks for the goody bags too much appreciated and really made it extra special!” “Lovely cottage with all the cosy extras (log fire/ blankets/ lighting ) with modern touches. Very clean and well-kept and with a parking space at the rear, with plenty more road parking close by. It is within walking distance of a number of pubs and beaches. Sleep 2 x Doubles and Bunk (3 Bedrooms) Welcoming for all ages and 2 fur babies.. (dogs). I will be returning again in the new year. Nice to find a clean wellpresented accommodation that makes you feel like it is “home from home”.
Prices start from just £375 for a week and £282 for a short break. Holbeach Facts
We all know Holbeach as a market town with a wide range of independent shops on the high street but did you know it has a rich history and many famous faces started life in the town!
Until the beginning of the 17th century, the sea came to within 2 miles (3.2 km) of the town and there were severe floods recorded in the 13th and 16th centuries. The land drainage programmes that followed moved the coastline of the Wash to 9 miles (14 km) away, leaving Holbeach surrounded by more than 23,000 acres (93 km2) of reclaimed fertile agricultural land The Spalding and Norwich Railway, (later incorporated in the Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway), opened
Holbeach railway station in 1862. Like the rest of the M&GN route, it closed to passengers in 1959 The name “Holbeach” also applies to the civil parish of Holbeach. The parish is one of the largest by area in England, and extends from Cambridgeshire to the Wash, measuring 16 miles (26 km) north to south, and about 4 miles (6.4 km) east to west. The Prime Meridian of the world passes through the west of Holbeach and is marked with a millstone at Wignals Gate

Second Award in 2018 for the Team at Molsom & Associates in Spalding. More than 150 business representatives came together on Thursday15th November at the sixth annual South Holland Business Awards recognising the amazing talent the district has to offer.
O
pening the evening’s celebrations, running through the 10 categories and announcing the winners, was BBC Radio Lincolnshire presenter, Melvyn Prior. Simon Beardsley, Chief Executive, Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Firstly, I’d like to take this opportunity, on behalf of myself, the Chamber and the judging panel to thank our winners, finalists and all of our applicants for taking the time to put together a submission. “We’re proud of all the winners and finalists, and we’re honoured to provide a platform for them to shout about their success. “Although the judging was
particularly difficult this year, with the introduction of two new categories, but we have been extremely impressed with the high standard of applications, demonstrating the wide variety of skills, expertise and work being achieved across the district. After the success of winning the National SightCare Opticians Award back in September, the team at Molsom & Associates were over the moon to be Finalists for Small Business of the Year. Andy Molsom added “We have waited 21 years, and 2 Awards arrive in one year! It is great for our work to be recognised including our commitment to the local community. Not only do
n Molsom & Associates team representatives collect the Small business award
we make people’s lives better through giving the time and care their eyesight deserves, but also working with the local schools to improve awareness of children’s eyecare, and giving talks to local health support groups. The whole team are instrumental in winning both Awards. Without the
support of the team, their dedication, and the great customer care they provide, it would not have been possible to win.” This was the first time Molsom & Associate had been in the running for a business award, so it is a great debut result for them.

Funerals
The Meaning of Flowers & Life Celebrations The type of flowers you choose can express specific sentiments. The traditional language of flowers provides a way to convey your feelings and send a meaningful message. The gift of a plant is often an ideal choice, as they provide a long-lasting tribute to the loved one lost, as well as a constant reminder of the friendship and affection you wish to support the bereaved through the grieving process. Lilies The lily is the flower most commonly associated with funeral services as they symbolize the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. The white lily expresses majesty and purity, where as white stargazer lilies specifically symbolize sympathy. Gladioli Gladioli have a tall flower stem composed of multiple flowers that can measure up to 4 feet tall. They are typically used in fan sprays, which are classic and elegant arrangements for traditional funeral services. The gladiolus embodies strength of character, sincerity, and moral integrity. They are available in a wide range of colours, including white, pink, red, purple, yellow, orange, salmon, and green. Carnations Long lasting and fragrant, carnations are a popular choice for sympathy arrangements. The red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.
Chrysanthemums Mums are frequently included in arrangements for funeral services. In some European countries, such as France, Italy, Spain, Poland, Hungary and Croatia, chrysanthemums are symbolic of death and are only used for funerals or on graves. In China, Japan and Korea, white chrysanthemums are symbolic of lamentation and grief. In the US, they symbolize truth and usually regarded
as positive and cheerful, with New Orleans as a notable exception. Roses As one of the most recognizable flowers, roses can be a beautiful part of an arrangement of funeral flowers. White roses evoke reverence, humility, innocence, and youthfulness. Red roses convey respect, love, and courage. Pink roses signify love, grace, appreciation and gentility. Dark crimson roses denote grief and sorrow. Yellow roses are given by friends of the deceased to symbolize their strong ties. When you include a single rose in a bouquet it expresses enduring love for the deceased.
Orchids Orchids say “I will always love you”. When giving an orchid plant as a gesture of sympathy, it is important to give consideration to colour. Pink and white are traditional colours of sympathy. Daffodils and Tulips Bright yellow spring tulips and daffodils are a symbol of renewal and fresh starts. For this reason, they are believed to bring encouragement and hope to a person who is grieving or unhappy, making them a great choice to send as a sympathy gift to the family home of the departed. Tulips represent elegance and grace. Yellow tulips represent cheerfulness. White tulips represent forgiveness. Purple tulips represents royalty. Lastly, red tulips represent perfect love.

Health & Beauty
New Year, New You With 2019 just around the corner we take a look at how to make it your best year yet!
T
he New Year always starts with Resolutions, it’s as if January 1st brings with it an unavoidable taking stock of the previous year and thoughts of how you can improve over the coming 12 months. The top resolutions are: 1) Lose weight and get fit 2) Stop Smoking 3) Drink less alcohol 4) Learn something new 5) Eat more healthily 6) Save money 7) Stay in touch with friends and family 8) Travel More 9) Be less stressed – work/life balance 10) Get more organised So that’s the to-do list started! What you have to do now is to follow it through. Make a start and stick to it. Which is often easier said than done… Begin by taking a really close look
at the goals you have set for yourself and check that they are realistic and obtainable. When making your resolutions it is easy to think about how life would be in a perfect world but if that’s what you end up striving for then you are going to make things very hard for yourself. If, for example, you have included ‘learn Mandarin’ on your list then it makes more sense to change this to ‘enrol in a Mandarin class’ which will seem a much less daunting task! Equally, ‘lose 3 stone’ would sound more achievable if it read ‘join a local diet group and find an exercise class’. Once you are happy with your list then break it down into smaller goals which can be quickly achieved. If you are able to tick things off your list regularly then you are more likely to stick with it as you will be able to see the results you are getting much more quickly than if you tackled them
Me Time When thinking about looking after ourselves for the new year we usually make changes to our diet and physical fitness but what about our mental health and wellbeing? I am definitely guilty of putting this way down the pecking order of importance but should definitely be higher up the list of ‘things’ to look after. With that in mind I took myself off with a friend recently to The Grange Spa in Pointon. It’s a perfect location for a half day spa in between school drop off and pick up or even a twilight session as it’s just 25 minutes from Spalding – you
36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
as mammoth tasks. If ‘travel more’ is at the top of your list then you could break it down by firstly researching destinations, then deciding where you would like to go, then finding out the cost, then deciding how much you need to save and then booking the holiday. By breaking it down you will feel like you are making steady progress in the areas you have chosen. Ask those around you to help. Many resolutions involve large changes to lifestyle such as eating less, exercising more and giving up smoking. Knowing that your family and friends are supporting you can give you the encouragement you need when you have been going for a while and need an extra boost. It could be something simple like asking them not to eat junk food around you, or coming out with you to walk the dog to make sure you are getting
feel like you are in another world. Once you step through the door it is full of luxury and warmth. We slipped on our costumes, wrapped up in the complimentary robes and took time to sit by the pool and just relax, something I never do – there’s always a job to be done! A treat for me is time to read a magazine, drink a hot cup of tea and nibble on a homemade cake – The Grange Spa deliver on all three. The beautiful swimming pool and heat experience zone is my favourite place to be. The 12 metre pool is heated to a gorgeous temperature, no ‘oooooh take your breath away moments’ here. There are experience showers and three baths to awaken your senses. • Gem stone steam bath - delicately scented steam bath to warm and decongest • Herbal bath - delicately scented sauna to warm and relax, innovative design • Aroma bath - warming and detoxifying with a pleasant eucalyptus scent As well as enjoying the facilities I took the
some exercise. If taking up a new hobby is on the list then it is also important to get the support from your household as, if you are going to be away, routines will have to change and may even involve you being out in the evenings or weekends. It might be a good idea to choose some resolutions you can all work on together, you are far less likely to give up when you have been going for a while and you feel like you could do with a break. Once you stop you are very unlikely to start again so the more support you have around you the better. Finally, try and enjoy what you are doing! Although most resolutions will feel like you are somehow being deprived, remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing. You ultimately want to be healthier and happier and when you need motivation it a good place to start!
opportunity to try out one of their current promotional treatments as part of the Cosy and Calm Half Day where they describe the treatment as “warm pindas relax the muscles followed by a warming body oil to soothe tired muscles, a massage using warm stones to the feet, shoulders and scalp de-stress the whole body”. The 50 minute treatment was amazing and I left feeling a lot calmer and relaxed when we left. So, after visiting I have made a new years resolution to ensure I take some me-time every 3 months and switch off the phone, grab a friend, book and robe to ensure I take the time to look after me.

Home & Property
Should you
Move or Improve? If you’ve fallen out of love with where you’re living then you have to decide whether to “do up” or “sell up”. We have spoken with Halifax Bank to give you some food for thought and help your decision! Not enough bedrooms for your growing family? The layout not working for you and your children? Or maybe you’re just sick of the avocado bath suite? The house that was once your dream home can quickly start to look more like a nightmare. So is it time to pack up your belongings and seek the space you crave elsewhere, or could you fall back in love with your home if it was given a little (or a lot) of TLC? To help you choose between doing up and selling up we’ve taken a look at the good, the bad and the ugly of both options. Improving The good: You can put your own stamp on your home AND add value Renovating your home allows you to put your own stamp on it and make sure the space really works for you and your family. You can think about exactly what it is you need, and make changes you know will make your life easier, whether that’s an updated kitchen, creating an extra room in the loft or knocking down a wall to create a familyfriendly kitchen-diner. Plus, any money you spend on improvements can add to your property’s value
in the long term. Just remember to be aware of your area’s ceiling price - the maximum amount a similar house has sold for in your area. The bad: There’s some things you just can’t change Sadly you can’t pick up your house and move it so if there are things you don’t like about your neighbourhood or location - such as poor schools or a long commute – you’ll still be stuck with them. The ugly: Coping with the destruction Even seemingly simple renovations can cause a lot of mess and major changes like a loft renovation or extension can lead to chaos for months. If you do any work in your kitchen you may become well acquainted with the local takeaway if your cooker is out of action. Moving The good: You get a shiny new home You may be able to find the perfect property at the right price in the right location. If you can afford it, you’ll be able to buy somewhere bigger, without the chaos of builders and the accompanying brick dust. You could find something ready to move
into with a layout and set up that suits your household’s needs better. You could end up with more space, a bigger garden in a better area. The bad: You may still have to do some work How many houses have you seen on the market, in your price range, that you’d be happy to keep exactly as they are? You could move and still find yourself with work to do, whether it’s just giving some rooms a lick of paint or bigger jobs like fitting a new kitchen. The ugly: the cost The costs of moving soon add up and the money doesn’t go into the long term value of your home. Stamp duty adds up to £2,500 for a home worth £250,000 and the more expensive home you buy the more you’ll pay. Typical estate agent fees can be anything between 0.75% and 3.5% of the selling price and run into thousands. Plus there are solicitors’ fees and even the price of hiring a van to consider. The verdict? It’s a tough one. Before you stick the for sale sign up or get the builders in you need to think carefully about what it is you’re looking for from your home and how much money you can afford to spend. Still stuck? It’s also worth asking the experts. Get quotes from local tradesmen and the planning office to see what improvements are realistic and ask your local estate agent to send you details of houses that meet your requirements. Good luck!

Free Estimates We offer a comprehensive service – from helping you decide which flooring is right for you to fitting it. This includes a free measuring up and quotation service. Our
team will visit your property to take measurements and we will then provide you with an accurate quotation, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. “We offer the uplift and disposal of old flooring as well as move furniture around to ensure your fitting goes as smoothly as possible with the least disruption. “Our aim is to make it as personal a service for each customer as possible.”
Professional Carpet Fitting Service Finding the right carpet or flooring for you is only the start. Installing it in your home is another matter altogether. Carpets-2-U in Spalding offer a professional carpet fitting service at very reasonable rates, and our service includes free measuring up and estimates. Our team are vastly experienced and strive to be as helpful as possible, even moving your furniture and tidying up for you when they’re done. Services also include free measurements and estimates, as well as taking samples to those who struggle with mobility.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class PROS ‘N’ CONS à Handsome à Handling à Performance à Comfort à Rear-Seat Space

FAST FACTS
(Mercedes-Benz A-Class A250 as tested)
Tim Barnes-Clay has been testing the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class recently. Here are his thoughts on the German hatchback.
T
he A-Class has become sexier with each incarnation – and 2018’s Mk4 is a car oozing desirability. It’s a classy hatch with one diesel option – the A180d. Then there are the A200 and A250 petrols. All are offered with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto. But, from 2019, manuals and more powerful engines will join the party. The A250 I’m reviewing here gets your juices flowing tastefully. It’s got a bit of ‘oomph’ to it – as
you’d expect from a car with a 224PS 2.0-litre lump under the lid. Inside, you feel like a King, with a digital set-up that you’d expect to find in a chauffeur driven luxury limo. The brand’s clever ‘Hey Mercedes’ voice control responds well to pretty much anything you ask of it. Additionally, although the Audi A3 trumps the A-Class on rear seat space, comfort is better than that offered by the rival. The seating and dash materials are
à Max speed: 155 mph à 0-62 mph: 6.2 secs à Combined mpg: 45.6 à Engine layout: 1991cc four-cylinder petrol turbo à Max. power (PS): 224 à CO2: 141 g/km
marginally better, too – and that takes some doing. Indeed, I’d go as far to say that this Mercedes-Benz has set the bar one notch higher in the compact class. On the move, the sporty sound the new A-Class makes is gratifying, and it’s always eager to please – especially in ‘Sport’ mode. But the hatchback delivers a calmer experience in ‘Comfort’ setting, soothing the parts that some other compact cars fail to reach. The auto ‘box can sound a bit strained when you give the Merc the beans, but most of the time it’s a smooth operator. What’s more, the shift paddles on the steering wheel - if you want to use them - are highly responsive. As handling and ride go, this small Mercedes is perfect for everyday motoring needs. I drove
Price: £30,240 it on motorways and rural roads and felt satisfied all day. Even the potholes on the Cotswolds’ test route didn’t rain on the parade. The A-Class handled them with aplomb. The car holds its own at 70mph, and there’s quite a bit of fun to be had when you point it at twisty tarmac. The front-wheel-drive Merc hunkers down, relaxes and then pings you out of the bends accurately and pleasingly. All this makes it an easy hatchback to like. So, if sexy looks, a charming cabin, great handling and a premium-badged hatch float your boat, then the new A-Class comes highly recommended.
