Welcome to the July issue

H

ere we are and the summer holidays are soon to be here – as a parent it’s a time I look forward to, a bit more time to be free of routine but it can also be daunting juggling childcare, thinking of how to keep everyone happy and entertained whilst not breaking the bank and also starting to plan ‘back to school’. For us our summer holidays are over but we still have a few treats to look forward to coming up whilst the weather is nice (fingers crossed!). We are visiting CBeebies Land and also ‘the boys’ have a camping trip planned with friends. I will happily stay at home with my creature comforts….thank you very much! Back to this month’s magazine – we offer advice on keeping your days out over the summer, as stress free as possible. We also talk about safety with the crowds that often ensue, it is worth having a plan and talking to your children about these too. Holbeach Food Festival is back this year and extends the fun and goodies over two days at Carters Park on July 6 and 7, check out page 22 for more information. We often think that the winter is the time to give our cars some tlc but the hot weather of summer also has it’s perils, turn to our summer motoring guide on page 37 to ensure you are safe on the roads. Finally our recipe page this month focuses on home made ice cream, get the kids involved and keep cool! Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the summer sunshine and see you next month!

Fowler Welch and Heck Food expand their relationship with new livery With BBQ season just around the corner, multi award-winning logistics provider Fowler Welch has strengthened its growing relationship with leading independent sausage manufacturer Heck Food by adding dual-branded trailers to its fleet. Heck Food and Fowler Welch first teamed up in June 2017, and, following a contract extension that saw the supply chain expert become the manufacturer’s sole supplier of

distribution services in the UK, have further reinforced the partnership by creating eye-catching livery that will become part of the Fowler Welch core fleet. The trailers display vibrant images of the Heck Food range, including their new vegan and vegetarian range, as well as their classic recipes that include gluten and dairy-free options. Jon Lee, head of sales, Fowler Welch says: “Adding these branded

trailers to our core fleet is a great example of how we work with our customers to really understand their requirements. When Heck approached us about the best way to help them raise awareness of their new product ranges, the solution was simple. We pride ourselves on listening to what our customers’ truly need, responding with bespoke solutions and delivering tangible benefits for both parties.

Andrew Keeble, managing director of Heck Food, adds: “From the first contract implementation we were really impressed with the flexible solution offered by Fowler Welch that ensured we were able to deliver the most efficient route to market for our products. The development of the relationship through these new trailers has really bolstered the partnership and I look forward to growing together in the future.”

Get fit for free with new outdoor exercise equipment in Spalding Residents in Spalding can now get fit for free thanks to brand new outdoor exercise equipment opened at The Hayfields, funded by money from the National Lottery Community Fund alongside budgets from the Ward’s District Councillors. The Trim Trail, which opened earlier this month, received almost £10,000 of funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, which was then matched by Spalding Wygate members Cllr Christine Lawton and Cllr Roger GambbaJones through their personal budgets. The installation was part of South Holland District Council’s Active Outdoors project, aiming to improve residents’ health and wellbeing by enabling them to exercise for free. The Hayfields was identified after a resident questionnaire showed that 84% of respondents would be more likely to use the park with outdoor exercise equipment and 97% felt that it would benefit the local community. The Trim Trail includes a variety of different equipment for exercising different parts of the body, including: • Tricep and core bars for whole body strength • Lateral pull and shoulder press for upper body strength • Bench press and seated row for upper body strength • Cross trainer for whole body cardio workouts • Recumbent bike for leg and core strength and cardio workouts • Smart energy hand bike for upper body strength and cardio workouts. The hand bike contains the added feature of utilising the energy created while exercising, as it allows for smartphones or similar devices to be

connected and charged while it is in use. South Holland District Council portfolio holder for communities and facilities, Cllr Gary Taylor, said: “It’s fantastic to see this new equipment introduced into Spalding, which will encourage people to get out and enjoy the outdoors, whilst also feeling all of the benefits of getting fitter and healthier. “I know that there has already been a really positive response from local residents using the new kit, and with summer just around the corner it is a great time to introduce it and to encourage people to enjoy the health benefits of exercising in the great outdoors, completely free of charge.” Cllr Christine Lawton said: “I am delighted

to see the new equipment in place and I hope that Wygate can now go on to be a trendsetter across the rest of the district. I have seen similar outdoor areas being enjoyed elsewhere in the country and always wondered why we can’t have something like that here. I am so pleased that we now do and to see it being used.” Cllr Roger Gambba-Jones said: “It is great that this new equipment is up and running, which achieves a long overdue ambition of ours to be able to cater for a wider and more diverse age and range of people looking to enjoy the outdoors in Spalding. I hope to see other similar sites appearing soon following the positive reaction we have had here.”

Healthwatch Lincolnshire Celebrating Volunteers Week 2019 Local charity Healthwatch Lincolnshire celebrated the difference volunteers make to their organisation and thanking them for all their time and dedication during this year’s Volunteers’ Week, which ran from 1-7 June. On the 4th and 6th June, Healthwatch Lincolnshire held two events to recognise the difference volunteers make to the organisation. The events are the perfect opportunity for Healthwatch to say ‘thank you’ to their volunteers. They also gave volunteers the chance to meet up, share their experiences, talk to members of the Board and receive organisational updates. Emma Batty, Volunteer Officer says “It’s really

important to us to be able to give something back to our volunteers. Volunteers’ Week is a great time to thank volunteers for their contribution and recognise the huge number of hours they give. We couldn’t do what we do without them.” Healthwatch Lincolnshire is an independent public voice for Health and Social Care with three core functions; to influence change and bring about improvements in local Health and Social Care Services; watchdog services, escalating concerns and instigating action and to signpost, helping members of the public if they are lost in the system or who need help and guidance. Healthwatch Lincolnshire have a team of 40 volunteers committed to improving health

services in the county. Volunteer roles include gathering the views of the public at GP surgeries and hospitals, research and reader panel work from home, authorised representative engagements at Care Homes and Care Providers, targeted project work and administration at the Healthwatch Lincolnshire office. “Volunteers play a vital role in our organisation, we are always looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join us so we can do more to improve health and social care services for everyone in the county. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with Healthwatch Lincolnshire, contact us on info@healthwatchlincolnshire.co.uk. Tel: 01205 820892”

Nick’s Notes Worth Cllr Nick

W

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages....

ith the district elections now behind us the new Conservative run Council is determining its priorities for the next four years based on promises made to the electorate in their manifesto. This forms the make up of the Council’s Corporate Plan and subsequent individual service delivery plans. One of the main priorities for the new administration are our market towns and high streets. In particular there will be an initial focus on Spalding and Holbeach, the latter of which has now completed all the background work, such as the recently announced Holbeach Transport Strategy and is now moving into delivery phase, albeit dependent on grants, such as the High Street fund, which we hope to hear from in the autumn. We all know our town centres well and in Spalding there are many different opinions as to what works well and what doesn’t and where best to invest money that will have the biggest impact on the town. The District Council has set up a fund for town centre regeneration, which can be used as match funding for grants and 106 planning agreements to make the most of the

6 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

funding available. So expect to see some surveys coming out over the coming months asking opinions on what people would like to see in Spalding, that will make a difference to the town centre and attract more people into it. There will I am sure be some quick wins along with more medium and long term objectives, but it is important that we know what you want rather than us try to impose something on you. Other priorities for the new administration will be our continued investment in housing and associated infrastructure to support that housing need. Hand in hand with that is the need to invest and facilitate business growth in the area, through one to one meetings with key businesses and continuing to share information through our regular business breakfasts. We are a business friendly council and keen to work with them to continually improve our offer, whether that be through grant funding, helping them to acquire land for their businesses to expand onto, food inspections, health and safety advice or licensing as a few examples. Giving our young people the best start in life is a big priority for us and we now have

excellent relationships with Boston College, who are expanding rapidly with an exciting new Engineering, Manufacturing and Technology Centre , incorporating an Innovation Centre, due to open in October. Our long standing relationship with The University of Lincoln and the Holbeach Academy continues to grow along with their vitally important links to local businesses, so that we can ensure our students are getting the courses that are relevant to those businesses. Look out for the new Centre of Excellence on the Holbeach Food Enterprise Zone that is due to commence work on site this month. Our final priority is to have a cleaner, greener district where we will be continuing to invest large sums into improving out street cleaning, fly tipping and importantly for town centres, our toilets. So a lot to work on in the next four years which will I hope continue to make South Holland a great place to live.

Advice Universal Credit and Self employment How the minimum income floor works if you’re self-employed Your Universal Credit payment will change each month depending on your earnings and other circumstances. How much you get also depends on whether you’re in a couple or have children. You won’t be able to find out exactly how much Universal Credit you could get each month. If you want to get a rough idea, you can use the entitled to benefits calculator. https://www.entitledto.co.uk/ When the DWP work out your Universal Credit payment each month, they’ll compare your real earnings with how much they expect you to earn each month - this expected amount is called your ‘minimum income floor’. The DWP take this into account when working out your Universal Credit payment. The minimum income floor doesn’t apply to everyone. If it doesn’t apply to you, your payments will be based on what you actually earn through self-employment. Check if the minimum income floor applies The minimum income floor will only apply to you if you’re in the ‘allwork-related requirements group’ - this means you’re expected to work or look for work. Your work coach should tell you what group you’re in. The minimum income floor won’t apply if: • you look after a child under 3

• you’re pregnant or have given birth in the last 15 weeks • you’re caring for a severely disabled person • you’ve been assessed as having limited capability for work or limited capability for work-related activity • you’re in full-time education You also won’t have the minimum income floor applied if you’ve been self-employed for less than 12 months or you’re temporarily too sick to work. If you’ve been self-employed for less than 12 months The DWP call the first 12 months of your self-employment a ‘start-up period’. When the start-up period has finished, the DWP will start using the minimum income floor to work out your payments. You’ll need to try to build your business up as much as possible during the start-up period - GOV. UK has advice on how to build a new business. If you’re temporarily too sick to work The minimum income floor shouldn’t be applied while you’re too sick to work. If you’re too sick to work and it affects your ability to make a profit, call the DWP and ask them to treat you as not being in ‘gainful self employment’ while you’re ill. Gainful self-employment is ‘organised, developed, regular work where you expect to make a profit’. If you’re not in gainful self-

s U o t k l Ta

employment, the DWP can’t apply the minimum income floor to your earnings and your Universal Credit payment should be higher. If you’re off sick for 7 days or more, you’ll have to get a medical certificate, sometimes called a ‘fit note’, from your doctor. Send it to your work coach at your local Jobcentre. Take a photo or copy of your medical certificate before you send it. How the minimum income floor affects your payment The minimum income floor is how much the DWP expect you to earn each month - it’s not the same as what you actually earn. The amount is different for each person, because not everyone is expected to work the same number of hours. How the minimum income floor is worked out The DWP multiply the national minimum wage with the number of hours you agreed to work when you

first met your work coach. This is in your written agreement called a ‘claimant commitment’. If you earn more than your minimum income floor Your payment will be worked out according to your actual earnings. You’ll be better off than if you’d earned less than the minimum income floor. The more you earn over the minimum income floor, the less your Universal Credit payment will be. The basic rule is for every extra £1 you earn, your Universal Credit will go down by 63p. If you earn less than your minimum income floor Your payment will be worked out as if you’d earned the minimum income floor amount. This means that although your earnings are low, your Universal Credit payment won’t be topped up. You might have to find other work to increase your income

Mini Police

An inspirational boy who has a passion for wildlife has been made an honorary mini police rural crime officer in Lincolnshire. Alex Goodwin, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of childhood bone cancer Ewing Sarcoma, was invited to Lincolnshire Police HQ to be sworn into the Mini Police. He attended with his mum Maria, dad Jeff who is a police officer in Warwickshire, sister Sophia, 6, and close family friends. Alex was gifted with becoming an honorary mini police officer after Assistant Chief Constable Shaun West came across his blog on Twitter. Alex’s blog tells of his battle with cancer. ACC West made contact with the family and offered Alex the chance to take up the role. Alex was delighted to accept the position and was completely overwhelmed when his little sister Sophia became his deputy mini police officer for rural crime. During his visit, Alex and his family were taken to the store room where both Alex and Sophia were kitted out with mini police uniforms, they had their photos taken and were handed Lincolnshire Police ID cards. A special ceremony was then held for Alex to take the oath and be sworn into the mini police. ACC Shaun West said: “I have followed Alex’s Twitter for some time and I think he is an amazing boy. I was touched by his posts about his cancer

journey. I know Alex and his family have had some difficult times. “Alex has a passion for the police due his dad working for a different force and I knew he had a love for wildlife. Alex doesn’t have mini police where he lives so I wanted to give him a chance to become a mini officer. I feel absolutely honoured and proud to have been able to make one of Alex’s dreams come true. Our mini police will also help raise money for Alex’s Journey. “Alex needs to raise £100,000 and we hope Alex will inspire the 1,006 mini police from across the county to help him raise the funds.” The 11-year-old, from Leicestershire, has been sharing his story on his battle with a rare form of bone cancer and has touched his thousands of followers. Alex, was given just months to live in October 2016 after being diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma. Alex has since received life-saving treatment in Kansas City including further chemotherapy, and complex, pioneering surgery where his right femur and knee were removed and replaced by a state of the art telescopic prosthetic bone. He also received reconstructive surgery and still requires intensive checks and scans as well as essential femur extensions every three months back in Kansas City. He is also undergoing brutal physiotherapy to get him out

of his wheelchair permanently and eventually, it is hoped, not even needing the use of walking aids. Alex, who is training in falconry in the hope he will soon be able to have his own owl, said: “The whole day has been amazing. I have had no pain today. There are no words. My whole life is dedicated to nature and wildlife and I love it more than anything. I would do anything to help nature and wildlife. I am so happy that my sister, who is my little monkey, is my deputy.” “I am so happy and thankful to Shaun West for all that he has done.” It was a proud moment for Alex’s parents who were overwhelmed. Maria said: “Alex was very nervous. He didn’t want to mess the day up. He is so passionate about nature and wildlife. He is studying falconry and will get an owl when he completes his training. “We have had a fantastic day and we cannot thank

Shaun and Lincolnshire Police enough.” To add an extra special touch to finish the day off, Alex and his family were treated to a private flypast of the Red Arrows when he visited RAF Scampton. The family have created a fundraising page to enable Alex to get the treatment he needs which is only available in America. They have been touched by all who have made donations to help Alex on his journey. Alex’s dad Jeff has written a book about his son’s journey with fund raised going towards his treatment. Proceeds from the book, ‘Alexander’s Journey: Sum Spiro Spero’ (While I breathe, I hope), will go towards physiotherapy, It is available to buy on Amazon. You can follow Alex on Twitter at Alex’s Journey. He also has a webpage alexanders-journey.com To follow the fundraising efforts log on to www. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ jeffrey-goodwin-1

New College Stamford Each year, the Fashion Show never fails to impress with one-of-a-kind garments, each designed and created by talented Fashion students who have worked tirelessly throughout the year to achieve the level of skill and attention put into each and every design. First on the catwalk was an array of printed dresses and printed shirts featuring a range of designs hand printed by the students. The students’ ‘White Project’ was designed to encourage experimentation and ‘thinking

outside of the box’ particularly with sculptural and 3D elements. The project produced some stunning designs with a mixture of techniques and experimentation that wowed the audience. The show also touched on some political issues and raised awareness of sustainability and the impact of the fashion industry on the environment. Students were set a live brief to design and create a look with the budget of just £5, recycling and upcycling existing materials.

very year, around May and June time, I look forward to a tremendous treat. My family take me to tootle around churches to check out flower festivals and fiestas. Floral creations, celebrations and many carnations! How I adore each one. They are gorgeous, glorious and fine fun for your canine chum. Let me tell you – they smell good too. I stuck my snout in many displays! Although when I reappeared there were always plenty of people to pet me. I’m a popular pooch among the pretty petals. I’ve spent a super few Sundays snuffling near spires, ambling along aisles and prowling through pews to enjoy arrangements by my side, under paw and towering

above my wagging tail, created by so many talented people. I’ve been an Otis among the oasis, if you will! My humans tried their hands

at an arrangement for Whaplode Church’s festival. The theme for their flowers was ‘France’, although I don’t recall seeing ‘un chien’ anywhere in their effort… One of my favourite things about flower festivals, along with the funds they raise and the feeling of community they bring, is the super selection of cakes and savouries on offer. It’s so nice to see you humans enjoy a nice snack - all crumbs happily hoovered up by yours truly! And there’s usually a nice fresh bowl of water about to wet my whiskery whistle. Don’t worry - I’ve not been drinking from the fonts. Yep, I’m a lucky Labrador to be able to look at such lovely flower arrangements. The Otis opinion of them all? Blooming marvellous!

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

veryone’s cycles are different, but despite the variation in length and intensity, we can all agree they affect us in similar ways. Our cycles are driven by hormones and depending on the levels of oestrogen and progesterone at various times of your cycle can mean moodiness, emotional surges, spots, bad hair days, skin problems, bloating, hunger and headaches to name but a few! I thought this month we could spend some time looking at the different phases of your cycle and how and why they can change how you feel. What you eat, your exercise and sleep patterns can all help to balance out the rollercoaster that is Woman! This is based on a 28 day cycle which is common but not necessarily the norm. Ovulation occurs 12-14 days before menstruation (i.e. the luteal phase is the same regardless of how long your cycle is) Days 1-5 – Menstruation. Replenish lost iron with red meat, asparagus, spinach, broccoli, strawberries, tomatoes and citrus. Fight pain and inflammation with oily fish, turmeric, ginger, curries and berries. Gentle exercise can soothe pain, boost mood and improve your concentration. You might not feel like it, but keeping the blood flowing by exercising can make your periods lighter and shorter. Hormonal changes make you hot, plus cramps and fear of leakage can disrupt sleep. Keep your bedroom cool and have an early night! Days 6-13 – Follicular Phase. Support hormone production with avocado, salmon, walnuts, seeds, coconut oil, yoghurt, hummus, almonds, spinach, broccoli and poultry. Oestrogen levels are high meaning you will have lots of energy and

motivation. Body temperature should be back to normal now and sleeping should be easier with longer periods of REM. Bloating has also subsided and the scales will be in your favour. In the last few days leading up to ovulation your breasts swell and you generally feel at your sexiest! (biologically, the general idea is that you look and feel at your best to attract a mate). Day 14 – Ovulation. Oestrogen plummets, so balance your hormones with oestrogen rich foods like dried fruits, flaxseed, chickpeas and beans. Be gentle with yourself when exercising, not only will you not feel like it but injuries are also far more likely as muscles lack their usual flexibility. Some women can feel ovulation – the name for this is mittelschmerz. This is generally considered a bad thing by western medicine but I disagree!! Having an awareness and being in tune with your body to know when you are ovulating is a powerful thing! Day 15-28 – Luteal Phase. Hormone changes demand energy-rich foods so things like avocado, nuts, fish and lean protein are good. Body temperature is increasing now so finding your usual workouts harder is common. Acknowledge the signals your body is sending and opt for shorter more frequent exercise. Progesterone is also high which can make you tired and sleepier than the rest of the month. In the last few days before your period, hormones are fluctuating causing headaches and skin problems. Drinking plenty of water and keeping topped up on carbs will help.

Family Life

Top Tips For Stress-Free Family Days’ Out Unfortunately, not every family day out will go smoothly. But you can always prepare yourself to maximise the chances of everyone enjoying a stress-free day. Here are some suggestions: • Plan when you’re going to eat. Hungry kids are no fun. Make sure you know where you can get food or take a packed lunch with you – and don’t forget a few drinks for everyone to stay hydrated. • Have a bit of downtime. Days out can be tiring – for everyone involved. Whether it’s as you sit down for food or the car ride home, make sure there is time for everyone to have a breather. • Don’t leave kids in the car. Even if you’re tempted for a short time, it’s risky and should be avoided. The hand brake could be let off accidentally and, with the increasing number of electric buttons in modern cars, it’s easy to see how things could go wrong quickly.

Here are the top 5 things your kids need to know now, should they get lost:

they can see you. This goes a long way in preventing children getting lost.

1. Know your parent’s name and phone number as soon as they are able to. If you ask most kids under 3 what their parents names are, they’ll tell you, “Mama” or “Daddy.” That won’t cut it when a kind stranger is trying to get information out of a panicked kid. Ask them, tell them, and practice your names over and over so they remember them. Make learning your phone numbers easier by turning them into songs.

3. If you get lost, stop where you are and yell. Kids aren’t often allowed to really yell as loud as possible but this is exactly what they need to do. Let them practice this. Have them yell your name or “Mum/Dad” over and over. Let them know that being loud will help you hear where they are.

2. Stay close to your safe adult. The rule is: if you can see them,

4. Look for a mum with kids and ask for help. This is where it helps to know your name and phone number because you want that mum to try to call you. Why should they look for

a mum with kids and not a dad with kids? We asked the same question of safety experts. It’s because statistically, this is the safest option. If the child is in a shop, they can also ask a person at the checkout for help. 5. Know that you will be found. Being lost is a common childhood event and almost all the kids who go lost are found (and we won’t talk about the few who aren’t). Kids should be told: don’t hide because you’re scared. Don’t go searching the area. And certainly don’t leave the area (aka – don’t leave a shop to wander the car park). Take a deep breath and remember your safety steps.

Safety When it comes to keeping your family safe, the experts have some great advice: Keep them in sight. All children need fresh air, exercise and the chance to be independent, but in most situations it is not safe to allow young children to be completely out of sight…If possible, let them play where you can see them from the window, or try to go to the park with them. They will enjoy having you there and you will know that they are safe. Big crowds can mean in a second you can momentarily ‘lose’ your child. Keep calm, we all think worst case thoughts but the likelihood of them being snatched is very slim. Considering that up to seven out of ten children get lost at some point in their lives, talking to them about this common (and traumatic) childhood event should be high on every parent’s to-do list.

Health & Beauty

Health Benefits

of taking a Holiday Everyone enjoys some downtime, right? However, when it comes to the work environment, research shows that the majority of workers have some unused holiday at the end of the year. Not taking a holiday can upset your physical and mental health. We list several health benefits of taking a holiday that prove you should take them seriously. Reduces stress Stress can help people get work done under pressure, but experts have noted that 80% of workers are stressed on the job, and 70% of their trips to a healthcare provider are because of stress-related conditions. Studies have shown that taking a holiday helps keep good health intact and prevents burnout. Increases creativity Taking a holiday boosts creativity—a change of pace allows people to see their everyday world differently. People experience clearer thinking as well as increased creatively after disconnecting from their work environment for a sustained period of time. Boosts emotional stability Too much time at the office (whether you work long hours or refuse to take a holiday) can leave you feeling frustrated. Getting away from it all, however, can ward off the potential for inappropriate outbursts or “did I really say that to my colleague?” regrets. Makes confidence soar Many researchers have noted that people return from a holiday with renewed sense of self. They’re refreshed, and tend to approach projects with more vigour, opting to tackle them with gusto rather than settling for easy solutions. Improves your intelligence The human body requires downtime; when people ignore its natural cycle of alertness and fatigue

(which come in 90 minute periods), they’re dismissing the body’s need to reboot. Small breaks are good, but longer getaways allow you to fully recharge, which improves mental alertness. Improves low moods Taking a break from deadlines and high-pressure environments fights stress. Altering your mind by taking a holiday can shift irritable, depressed or anxiety-ridden moods to ones that are more calm and relaxed. Fights colds and infections While it might sound too good to be true, getting away from it all helps keep your body healthy. It’s been proven that continual, or chronic, stress can gravely compromise bodily function. Even the genetic material in cells can become disrupted under too much stress. Strengthens relationships Time spent with a partner or family members during holidays allows you to bond with these people in ways that transcend the usual “how was your day?” discussions. Experts have discovered that time together in the form of a holiday builds personal bonds and increases family connectedness. You’ll save your company money While it might sound strange that time away from work can help your company’s bottom line, there’s some truth to this claim. It’s been found that over-stressed employees may end up being out of work for long

periods of time while tending to physical and mental health problems that arose from too much time on the job. So get away! You might be inspired in new ways Exploring a new area might be just what you need to break away from your usual hobby and discover something different. You never know where inspiration will come from, but it surely won’t be found while you’re

engaged in the same environment and seeing the same faces for years without a holiday. Time away from the usual routine need not be a grand money-depleting experience in Tokyo or Las Vegas; even the increasing popularity of “staycations” (in which people remain within in their home country) can provide these mental and physical health benefits.

Summer Garden Tips During the dog days of summer, there’s plenty to do in the garden. With a bit of planning, you can make the best use of your time. Be waterwise Use mulch beds with organic matter to suppress weeds and help retain moisture. Use drip irrigation when possible, and water early or late in the day— particularly when using sprinklers or hose pipes. Keep cool Think of ways to cool off your yard. Plants are nature’s own air conditioner; areas under trees can be much cooler than adjacent sunny spots. Plant a tree to shade the patio or deck, and locate benches and chairs underneath existing trees. Place a fountain, pool or small portable water feature near your patio for a cooling evaporation effect, and the soothing sound of moving water. Build an arbor and plant quickgrowing vines at the base, or install a shade cloth. . Add colourful containers Keep annual containers looking their best with regular watering, fertilising and deadheading. In midsummer, cut back trailing annuals such as petunias by half and give regular feedings of water-soluble bloom booster fertiliser for a new flush of color. Replace tired-looking plants with new ones for an updated look. Move containers into mixed borders where there are holes or gaps for an element of surprise.

a pathway. Dinosaur (‘Lacinato’) kale, with its pale blue leaves, can be planted in containers and combined with annuals for a showy look. Nasturtiums, with edible flowers that liven up green salads, can be used as container accents, in raised beds, or climbing up a trellis. Use edibles as ornamental accents Many new varieties of fruits and vegetables have been bred to perform well in containers, making them a great choice for small decks or patios. Raspberries or strawberries are attractive on their own, but can also

Mix it up Don’t be afraid to combine edibles with ornamentals. Different coloured lettuces make attractive edging along

be planted in colourful ceramic pots or combined with annuals such as trailing nasturtiums for an extra splash of colour.

better together. Autumn and spring are the best times to move plants around, when the weather is cooler.

Freshen the deck Hose down patio and deck areas occasionally, and wipe dust from patio furniture with a damp cloth. Switch out pillows or cushions, and move containers around for an updated look. Cut fresh flowers from the garden and arrange them in vases around your patio for an extra pop of color, and to enjoy your homegrown flowers up close.

Think big While the weather is good, tackle major projects, such as laying pavement for a new patio, building a pond or path, installing a new fence, or addressing drainage issues. Whether you plan to do it yourself, or hire a professional, do your research to make sure your project is compatible with your home and outdoor needs, meets any local building codes, and comes in on budget.

Take note Now’s the time to assess the garden. Make a list of what needs to be divided or replaced, and take a few snapshots on your phone as a visual reminder. Note if a plant is too big or small for a particular spot, and when you see varieties that might work

Seek out inspiration Visit botanical gardens and public parks, or participate in local garden tours for new design ideas and inspiration. Take photos—with permission—of particular areas that you like, or of plant combinations to try in your own garden.

First D R I V E

Lexus RX450h L Premier Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) seem to be the flavour of the last few years in Britain. They are often as bland as a bowl of watery noodles, but we still buy them. SUVs don’t need to be like this though – and Lexus seems to have unearthed the formula to make them satisfying. Naturally, the Japanese automaker would have to kill me if it told me what the secret is, but it has let me drive one for this review. Now, I always try and remain impartial when test-driving cars – I need to be if my credibility as a motoring journalist is to stay solid. So, it came as a surprise to me how the SUV I was handed the keys to is as far from bland as you can get. By the way I’m building this motor up, you might think it’s a rocket-fuelled beast I’m about to review; well, no, it isn’t. This is a sizeable family-friendly machine – and the one I got behind the wheel of is the RX450h L Premier - an extended, seven-seat variant of Lexus’ top SUV, the RX450h. If you want your SUV to give you loads of kit, brilliant quality, superb refinement and oodles of comfort, then this Lexus could be the vehicle for you. Of course, it’s not as engaging as a BMW X5 to pilot, but it will make you happy when at the tiller. Why? Well, if, like me, you have a bunch of kids (I have three), then you will struggle to find a nonGerman car quite so luxuriously accommodating. What’s more, the Lexus name has cachet, and it has an excellent reputation for reliability. By adding 110mm behind the back wheels and two more leather chairs, Lexus has done a good job when it comes to fitting extra occupants into the RX450h. This third row of seating folds electrically out of the load area’s floor, while the second tier of chairs slide to allow you access to the rearmost set. What the L variant of the RX450h does is give you a boost in boot room from 453 litres to 495 litres,

with a fresh maximum of 966 litres with all five rear seats collapsed. Useful stuff. And from behind the wheel, other than the more erect rear windscreen being more distant, driving the seven-seater doesn’t feel any different to the regular five-up model. Visibility is just as good, making the RX L an easy set-of-wheels to live with. The emphasis is on comfort, beginning with the cooled and heated front seats that keep you feeling supported and fatigue-free on long journeys. The ride is correspondingly accommodating over blemished British bitumen, while the muted hybrid powertrain adds a bit of electric power at low speeds. Certainly, the hybrid arrangement, encompassing a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine and a couple of electric motors, helps efficiency. In the real world, you can easily achieve 45mpg around town or 35mpg on a motorway commute. That is more impressive than many comparable diesel-driven seven-seater SUVs. The steering isn’t as sharp as you will find in a BMW SUV, but it’s no issue as the Lexus’ whole character doesn’t lend itself to being athletic – it is all about being chilled out in cosy luxury. There’s lots of kit on the Premier version of the RX L, and there is a large infotainment screen that’s controlled via a slightly fiddly mouse. What’s more, this car comes with an audio treat in the form of a Mark Levinson 15-speaker sound system. The RX450h L Premier feels special in every department – especially the cabin. On top of this, you have that bullet-proof Lexus dependability. And that last point is what you need when looking for a plush car that will serve you and your family well.

Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring journalist – tweeting @carwriteups www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 35

Safe Summer Motoring Hot weather exposes motorists to a whole new set of challenges which can affect everything from a car’s reliability to the safety of passengers and pets. There’s everything from routine maintenance to advice on avoiding road rage, and preventing dehydration to protecting your car’s paintwork to think about. Essential checks It’s important to carry out basic maintenance tasks whatever time of the year, but especially if you’re planning a journey during the summer. Before you head off you should check your car’s oil, coolant and windscreen washer fluid levels. Engines are prone to overheating during the summer and oil and coolant are essential for cooling down your engine and keeping it running when it’s being pushed to the extreme. Also check tyre pressures and their general condition (legally the tread should be a minimum of 1.6mm). Worn or damaged tyres can dramatically increase the chances of punctures and accidents. Finally, make sure your car’s lights (headlights, rear lights, brake lights, hazard lights, registration plate lights and indicators) are all working. Hot car danger It should go without saying that children should never be left in a car at any time. Stories of infants having to be rescued from baking cars are not uncommon in the UK. Dogs are also at risk – even during a regular British summer. Dogs cool themselves by panting and sweating through their paws, and it can only take a few minutes for them to succumb to the symptoms of heatstroke in a hot car. If possible, leave your dog at home on hot days. If you do have to take your dog, pack plenty of fresh drinking water and a bowl, take frequent breaks and ensure it is able to stay cool during the journey. Plan your route Don’t just rely on a smartphone app or built-in sat nav – take the time to plan your journey on a traditional map. Especially useful if you’re driving through an area when the signal has dropped out, a map gives you an overview of your route you rarely get otherwise. You might even want to plan a break somewhere other than motorway services for a change!

Expect the unexpected If fitted, check your spare tyre is in good condition and correctly inflated. Also, make sure the jack, spanner and locking wheel nut are present and correct. Many new cars now come without a spare tyre and instead are fitted with puncture repair kits – often referred to as tyre foam. Make sure the can is still in the boot. Also make sure you have an emergency number for your breakdown provider should the worst happen.

from a comfort point of view, but it’s been proven that drivers’ reaction times can drop in the heat. If it’s so hot outside that opening windows makes no difference, then it’s time to wind them up and switch on the air conditioning. Spend time with the settings and vents to make it work as efficiently as possible, but remember, it will affect your fuel economy. Finally, if you’re embarking on a long journey in a convertible, make sure you wear a hat or cap and use sunscreen to protect your scalp, face and back of your neck.

Don’t drive dehydrated Driving while dehydrated can be just as dangerous as drink driving, according to recent research by Loughborough University. Motorists who don’t drink enough water make more mistakes and these include late-braking, drifting within a lane and crossing lane lines. Major symptoms of dehydration include slower reaction times, loss of focus and muscle cramps.

Stay in the shade Parking your car in the shade is always a good idea during extreme hot weather, but remember that the sun moves, so what’s shade in the morning can be full sunlight in the afternoon. Apart from being cooler, it can also benefit your car’s battery which contains water and acid. The water will evaporate faster than the acid in hot temperatures, leaving the lead plates bare, which can damage the battery. It also might be worth investing in a windscreen sunshade which will keep the sun’s rays away from your car’s interior.

Take a break On long journeys especially, regular breaks are important – not just to give you a rest, but to give you the chance to stretch your legs. Time your stop-off to coincide with a meal-time or snack. The Highway Code recommends taking a break (of at least 15 minutes) every two hours. According to road safety organisation RoSPA, driver fatigue may be a contributory factor in up to 20% of road accidents. Stay alert Driving at any time, but particularly during the summer holidays in soaring temperatures, can be tiring.Watch your speed and stay vigilant at all times, especially of erratic driving from other motorists. Keep focused and avoid getting distracted. Keep cool Avoiding getting overheated in your car is a major consideration during hot weather – not just

Don’t be dazzled The glaring summer sun can be a major distraction and is often a factor in summer collisions. There are a few ways to avoid being dazzled. For instance, keep your windscreen clean both inside and out – a dirty screen will magnify the glare. Also, wear sunglasses and use your sun visor. And remember, if you are suddenly dazzled by the sun, slow down and leave extra space between yourself and the driver ahead. Keep it clean Spare a thought for your car’s paintwork during the summer months. Vehicles get peppered with bird poo and insect splats. Try to clean them off on a regular basis. They can cause damage if left, especially in the baking sun, and it will save on elbow grease later on.
