Welcome to the June issue For me 2019 is flying by, since January 1st it has felt like countdown until the day my first born starts school. Such a huge change in our house, the routine, the constraints that school brings, the apprehension of how he will cope but also the excitement of the ‘next chapter’ in watching him grow. It’s true what they say that once you have children life goes much faster. I cannot believe it is 4 years since he joined us, that time has whizzed by but at the same time I often ask myself what did we do with our time before children? Normally I think (dream of) sleep! So, we are signing out for a couple of weeks this month for some much needed R&R and making the most of term time holiday prices, while we can get away with it! There’s almost so much to plan before a holiday, pet sitters, passports, car parking, money, stuff to entertain the children, catching up on work, what to actually pack as well as planning what to do whilst you are away. My husband, I am sure will wake up on ‘holiday morning’ and think all the fairies sorted everything out!!!! But before we jet off we have a magazine to get to you. In this issue we have advice on replacing windows and doors, information to help you if you are caring for an elderly friend or relative as well as inspiration if you have ever thought of learning a new skill or returning to college. Don’t forget it is Father’s Day on June 16, we have lots of ideas and inspiration for you. If you need an excuse it is National Fish and Chip Day on June 7, so head down to your local chippie and give them some support! Annette this month gives advice on how to give yourself a break and stop expecting too much of yourself, something I think many parents can be guilty of at times. Who is perfect anyway? We are also wishing Otis a very Happy 10th Birthday, check out what our canine friend has been up to, to celebrate. Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

Winners announced for 19th South Holland Open Arts Exhibition The 19th South Holland Open Arts exhibition has drawn a crowd and painted a picture of the local artistic talent in the area this month, with over 600 people visiting the South Holland Centre to see the 95 pieces of amateur and professional art on display. Following an open application process which saw almost 250 entries, an independent panel of judges shortlisted the artwork to go on display at the free exhibition, which ran from the 4 - 10 of April. The winners of the Best Newcomer and Young Person prizes were chosen on the opening night, which saw an attendance of 165 people. The panel of judges included a Councillor from SHDC, Scarlet Summerfield from Boston College and Simon Haw from Spalding Picture Framing. The Public Vote Trophy was then awarded to the artist whose artwork received the most votes from visitors throughout the weeklong exhibition. The winner of Best Newcomer, sponsored by Riverbank Studios, was Ian Simm for his work “Blood and Tears”. Ian received £100 for his winning entry. The winner of the Young Person

Award, open for 14 – 18 year olds, goes by the pseudonym “Ghost” and won for their work “Wandering Soul”. The award is sponsored by Spalding Picture Framing with a prize of £500 worth of vouchers to be used to frame their works of art. Ieva Baranovska was named as the winner of the Public Vote Trophy. Her work, My Girl, was selected by members of the public from the works on display, with 366 votes cast in total. The contest was open to any professional or amateur artist over the age of 14 living or working in Lincolnshire, North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Nottinghamshire, Rutland, Northamptonshire, Norfolk, Leicestershire or Fenland. Artists were able to enter up to three pieces of work in the following media: 3D, photography, digital, oil, pencil, pastel, watercolour, acrylic and gouache. A South Holland District Council spokesperson said: “We were delighted to host this fantastically supported event and to get to showcase the unique and beautiful work of artists from across the region. Thank you to everyone who

worked for and with the Council to make the event possible, including

the sponsors, and to all the artists who submitted their works.”

Spalding-Based Encore Goes The Extra Mile For Charity Despite only announcing its charity of the year last month, recruitment agency group, Encore Personnel, has already raised over £5k for Children with Cancer UK – more than 25% of its target for the year in just one month. The impressive amount follows an exciting month for Encore, which is based on New Road in Spalding. Ian Briers, Director at Encore, took on the agency’s biggest charity challenge yet – the London Marathon. Completing the Marathon in just 3.75 hours, Ian raised £5,218 in total, with contributions from 89 separate donators and supporters. However, the team is not looking to slow down their efforts anytime soon. Up next on Encore’s agenda is a Peak District Challenge in July. Encore employees will take to the Peaks and attempt to walk the 50km route in under 12 hours. Then in September, a challenging coast to coast bike ride from Whitehaven to Tynemouth will see staff ride 166 miles over three days. Encore chose to fundraise for Children with Cancer UK, which provides support for children with cancer and their families. Funding research at centres of excellence across the country, the charity works to drive up cancer survival rates and ensure effective treatments

are found. Each year, Encore chooses a charity to support which has directly impacted a member or loved one and Ian knows all too well the effect cancer can have on children and their families. Ian Briers said: “The comradery and friendliness of all the competitors at the marathon blew me away – it was a fantastic experience. This particular charity is close to my heart, as my best friend’s son has been blighted by various guises of cancer. To suffer with cancer at any age is harrowing and frightening, but especially as a child when you don’t fully understand what is going on, along with the pain and emotional suffering from the treatments and hospital visits. “From the bottom of my heart, I’d like to say a massive thank you from myself and on behalf of Children with Cancer UK to everyone who donated. Ringing the End of Treatment Bell means that a child has finished their cancer treatment. The funds I’ve raised will help with vital research so that one day every child will survive and can ring the End of Treatment Bell.” For more information about how you can support and donate to Encore Personnel and Children with Cancer UK, please visit: https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/encore-personnel-services

East of England Arena gets ready for busiest season on record With a record season of new exhibitions and outdoor events ahead, The East of England Arena and Events Centre has invested £144k in vehicles, equipment and works to ensure the venue’s 238 acres of outdoor venue space are in top condition. The venue has laid new water lines to the west part of the site, and purchased four new vehicles including a telehandler and tractor, plus three new mowing units to keep the venues huge grassed areas neat

and green. A dedicated team of eight works tirelessly, keeping the grass and grounds in superb condition, as well as ensuring the venues systems like water and electricity are in perfect working order. “When outdoor events come to East of England Arena and Events Centre, “ explained Ryan Moroney, Head of Operations at the venue, “one of the first things they realise about our venue is how much room there is to expanding their event, so

we need to be ready with upgrades and improvements to stay ahead of demand.” “We need regular investments in reliable, capable vehicles, dedicated,

full-time staff and a programme of continuous upgrades to the site, in order to provide for a growing number of large events choosing the venue as their new home.”

Molsom & Associates to Test UV Effectiveness On June 1st Molsom and Associates have organised a special sunglasses day. They are distributing leaflets to local schools to encourage regular eye exams and wearing

sunglasses to protect children’s developing eyes. On the day you will be able to have your child’s sunglaases checked to see how much

UV they block, along with one of our suppliers Maui Jim bringing along their full range to view. There will be special offers and prize draws on the day with staff available for help and advice.

Fly-tippers pay the price following successful prosecution by South Holland District Council South Holland District Council has successfully prosecuted two more proven fly-tippers, continuing its campaign to tackle the tippers in the district. Stephen Penn of Garnsgate Road in Long Sutton was found guilty on 15 February of offences relating to a fly tip on Guys Head Rd near Sutton Bridge in March 2018, where approximately two tonnes of soil and turf were dumped in a gateway, and was witnessed by a member of the public who reported the incident to the Council. Following the guilty verdict Mr Penn was fined £3000, with costs of £1104.86 and a victim surcharge of £170. The total amount payable was £4274.86. He was also issued with a two-year Criminal Behaviour Order around the correct carrying and disposal of waste. This was followed on 1 April with the prosecution of Shaun Harvey of Kinderley Road in Wisbech. Mr Harvey pleaded guilty to an illegal fly tip at West Drove South, Gedney Hill in May 2018, where a large load of tree cuttings were dumped in the road and witnessed by a local resident. After pleading guilty the Court handed him a fine of £1400, alongside a victim surcharge of £140 and costs of £732.13, making a total payable of £2272.13. South Holland District Council continues to work to clear fly-tips and to catch and successfully prosecute offenders operating in the district. These cases followed the successful conviction of two other fly-tippers in November 2018, who were both handed significant fines by the courts. It is important that information about tips is shared quickly and in as much details as possible, to allow evidence to be gathered and thorough investigation to take place. Reports can be made on the Council’s website at www. sholland.gov.uk/reportit or by calling 01775 761 161

Nick’s Notes Worth Cllr Nick

F

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages....

irstly a big thank you to all of you who turned out to vote in the recent local elections, which considering the national issues particularly around the whole Brexit debacle, produced a surprisingly higher turnout than expected, albeit only around 30% on average. I was lucky or deprived of that process depending on which way you come from, in that I was elected unopposed, so did not have to go through the nerve racking weeks leading up to the day of the election or the count itself. Being unopposed does save many miles of walking and talking, ( although I did help out some of my colleagues) and is definitely a big relief when it happens, but I have to say you do feel a bit cheated and on the count night it is a bit deflating particularly if, like me, you are quite competitive. For politicians once an election is called then it is the sole focus of your activities. For most people however it is just one day and few minutes in the polling booth and therefore not surprising how many people, engrossed in the everyday work and tired at the end of a working day, just simply forget to vote. This is why you get so many leaflets ( from some political groups, not all), one to ensure

8 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

you are aware of who the candidates are and importantly what they stand for, but also to give you a constant reminder to vote. In South Holland we have lost a few good Councillors and gained some new ones as well, which is what democracy is all about, but is quite hard for those who lost out. It is very black and white in that respect. The Conservative group remains as the controlling party, but will, as we have in the past, work with our Independent group colleagues to ensure you get the best possible service, that is both efficient and effective. That involves many weeks of training for new Councillors and refresh training for the longer standing members, which I think all would agree is both interesting and informative and covers areas like Governance, code of conduct, committee structures, how to be effective in meetings, Scrutiny training ( the sort of questions to ask), I.T. , and introductions to housing and emergency planning. That work begins after the Annual meeting when the new Leader and Cabinet are announced along with the various committees, which include Policy Development, Performance Monitoring, Audit and Governance, Planning ( a popular

Committee!), Licensing, as well as meetings of the full council. There is needless to say, plenty of work for everyone! Cabinet members have specific portfolios and are directly responsible for their delivery such as Communities and Facilities, Housing and Health, Finance, Public Protection, Governance and Customer Services, Place, Growth and Commercialisation. On top of this there are dozens of outside bodies, such as Citizens Advice, Police and Crime Panel, Health Scrutiny Committee, Drainage Boards, Heritage and sports bodies all of whom need representatives from the Council on their boards, so pretty much something for everyone. I hope that may give you some insight into the life of a councillor, but of course none of the above includes their most important, but every day job of representing you in their local wards and the myriad of queries and issues that you raise with them on a daily basis. It is a very rewarding job as I am sure our new elected councillors will be finding out over the coming months and years.

Nick

Advice Domestic violence and abuse Domestic violence is controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between people aged over 16. It doesn’t matter what your gender or sexuality is. It includes the following types of abuse: •psychological •physical •sexual •financial •emotional abuse. Anyone can experience domestic violence - it doesn’t matter whether you’re a man or woman. Harassment, stalking, rape, sexual assault, female genital mutilation, forced marriage and honour-based abuse are also types of domestic violence and abuse. If you are the victim of an abusive relationship, you might want to: •find somewhere safe to stay •stay in your home and get the person who is harming you to leave •report the violence to the police •get a court order to stop your abusive partner from harming or threatening you •take legal action •get help from a charity or another organisation Whatever you want to do, there are organisations that can give you advice and help. Finding somewhere safe to stay You may need somewhere safe to stay, either alone or with your children. You could: •stay at home - if you think this is safe •stay with relatives or friends •stay in a refuge •get emergency accommodation

from the local authority under homeless persons law - this will usually mean a bed and breakfast hostel •get privately rented accommodation. Finding a refuge Refuges provide somewhere safe for people and their children to stay and think about what to do next. Staff at refuges are specialised in dealing with domestic violence, and so can give a lot of emotional and practical support, for example, advice on benefit claims, which solicitors to use and, if necessary, how to contact the police. If you’re a woman contact the National Domestic Violence Helpline, Helpline staff will do their best to find you somewhere safe to stay that night even if the local refuge is full. They are also happy to talk about any questions they have about refuges. If you’re a man, you can get help through a charity called Refuge. Going to the local authority or Housing Executive Local authorities have a legal duty to provide help to certain people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness. You will qualify for help if you are eligible for assistance, legally homeless or threatened with homelessness and not intentionally homeless. You must also be in priority need. The local authority may also

s U o t k l Ta

investigate whether you have a local connection with the area. You will normally be considered to be legally homeless if it is not reasonable for you to occupy your home because of the risk or fear of domestic violence. Local authorities should deal sympathetically with applications from people who are in fear of violence. You can ask for a private interview, with someone of the same sex, and can take a friend with you for support. The local authority may have a duty to provide emergency accommodation for you while it decides whether you are legally homeless. If it is outside of normal office hours, you should telephone the local authority’s emergency out-of-hours number for help with emergency housing. Going to privately rented accommodation If you decide to go into privately rented accommodation you will be unlikely to be able to arrange it quickly - but it could be an option if you have time to plan your departure. Reporting the violence to the police Many kinds of domestic abuse are criminal offences and the police can arrest, caution or charge the perpetrator. Most police stations have Domestic

Violence Units or Community Safety Units with specially trained officers to deal with domestic violence and abuse. You should call 999 in an emergency or 101 in a nonemergency or you can attend a police station in person to report an incident. Find information on all the UK police websites through the UK Police Service Portal at www. police.uk If the police arrest and charge a perpetrator, they will decide whether to keep them in custody or release them on bail. There will usually be conditions attached to their bail to protect you from further violence and abuse. Make sure you ask for your crime reference number which you may need if you contact other agencies for help. The Crown Prosecution Service will make the final decision on whether your abusive partner is prosecuted - you might have to go to court if they are. If you’re worried about going to court, you can get free help and support from the Citizens Advice Witness Service. You can find more information on the criminal prosecution service on the Women’s Aid website. Mini Police

As I write this article, most of our Mini Police schools are helping their Year 6 pupils prepare for the SATs, having only recently returned from the Easter break. Ordinarily this would mean that it would be rather quiet in terms of Mini Police engagements, however our schools across the Boston and South Holland areas have been busy carrying out numerous tasks both in and out of the classroom. Below are a few examples of some of the important work being carried out by our children: Pupils from Sutterton Fourfields Church of England Primary school carried out their CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) task with PCSO Williams, learning about the investigation of crime scenes, how the police identify and gather different types of evidence from crime scenes, how that evidence is examined and what the police can use that evidence for in their investigations. They learnt about fingerprints, taking their own and learning how each and every one of us is different. They also got the opportunity to draw upon the interview skills, having to think about ‘open’ questions to work out which of their suspects (teachers) was guilty. Mini Police from several local schools including Fleet Wood Lane Primary school and Moulton Chapel Primary School have been Kindness Secret Agents, carrying

out secret ‘random acts of kindness’ both in and out of school. Fleet Wood Lane Mini Police then went on to carry out a Litter Pick in their local neighbourhood, making it a better place for everyone. Mini Police from Moulton Chapel have decided that their ‘random act of kindness’ will be to carry out a sponsored walk around the school field, raising money for a charity supporting greyhounds. Wrangle Primary Mini Police had a special invitation to assist Boston’s Neighbourhood Policing Sgt Matt Dickinson with the launch of a new Police Office ran by volunteers at Pilgrim Hospital. Mini Police were there to promote the scheme which provides patients, staff and visitors with the opportunity to engage with police volunteers at the new office, providing crime prevention advice and building trust between hospital users and the police. They visited different wards across the hospital site, informing the patients and visitors about the new Police Office which is open on Tuesdays and Fridays between 1100 and 1600. Supporting the Lincolnshire Police ‘Fatal 4’ road safety campaign is one of the Mini Police ‘National Priorities’. The Fatal 4 task looks at the four biggest causes of serious injury and deaths on Lincolnshire’s roads – Excess speed, Drink/Drug driving, Mobil phone use and not

wearing seatbelts. Mini Police from several schools including Westmere Primary (Sutton Bridge), Long Sutton Primary School and Billingborough Primary school carried out speed checks outside the local schools, with any vehicles found to be driving above the speed limit were stopped and invited to speak with the Mini Police who had prepared questions to ask and information to provide to drivers to educate them on the dangers of inappropriate or excessive speed. Several drivers were stopped at each site, spoken with and given suitable words of advice. As we move towards the final half-term of the academic year, and (hopefully) nicer weather, our Mini Police will be taking part in more engagements in and around their local communities. If you see them, please say ‘Hello’. They will undoubtedly want to share their knowledge and explain what they are doing.

Wisbech Grammar School and Magdalene House Preparatory School Wonka’s Golden Ticket was a magical performance put on by Prep School pupils; performed to parents, visitors and staff “The performance from our pupils left us with a great sense of pride as they sang, danced and acted this year’s production, Wonka’s Golden Tickets. The colourful array of costumes combined with the outstanding props and lighting made for a spectacular display showing our pupils’ finest talents. The dedication of the staff to support our pupils in gaining the confidence to perform and reach their potential in this area of the curriculum is truly amazing and something I am so grateful for. It took a true team to put this show together and we could not have

done it without the vision of Mrs Beck and the incredible efforts from our pupils, parents, and staff”. Mrs Neaves, Deputy Head of Prep

Gosberton House Academy

7 Pupils from Gosberton House Academy took part in Bikebaility training recently. All pupils achieved level 1 with 4 pupils achieving level 2 awards. Bikeability is the only approved bicycle training programme supported by The Department for Transport. It is designed to enthuse participants about cycling whilst equipping them with the skills and confidence to ride more often. The level 2 took place on the local streets of Gosberton, giving the pupils a real cycling experience. Well done to all those who took part!

Weston Hills CofE Primary School Terms 5 & 6 are always very busy in school. Term 5 is when we deliver statutory assessments for Year 2 and Year 6 in school. Year 6 will complete their SATs between 13th—16th May, and Year 2 will complete assessments during May. Tempest have been into school to take our end of year Class Photographs. Chance to Shine Cricket will be in school all of Term 5, and children in Key Stage 2 will have the opportunity to go to Trent Bridge for an ICC Cricket World Cup match between West Indies and Australia. Our new Reception children in September will be coming into school for taster sessions in the summer terms. Following on from KS2 SATs, our Year 6 children will be visiting the Church Schools Festival in Lincoln, and Year 3/4 children have a visit booked to West Stow. Friends of Weston Hills School have organised Discos for our children just before we break up for half term, and there will be a Fathers’ Day Wrap in June for children to purchase gifts for dads and grandads in preparation for

Fathers’ Day. Children in Year 4 will have a morning at either Spalding High (girls) or Spalding Grammar (boys) when they will experience two lessons in a secondary school environment – a great introduction for a positive transitional period in the coming years. Bishop David will be visiting the school in June and will be delivering an Assembly to the whole school. Knex Challenge (Education Business Partnership) will again be coming in to have a morning with our Year 5/6 pupils. Class 4 will be attending the Music Festival at the Holbeach Hub, and are practicing for this. Class 3 children will be attending the Mini-Olympics being organised by Inspire+ in Grantham. Class 5 will be attending an “Evacuation Day” at Stibbington in Term 6. Our Sports Day will take place on 25th June, with a reserve date of 27th June. Class 1 & 2 have a visit booked for Tattershall Park in July. Clubs this term include: Choir, Dance, Homework, Yoga, Tennis, Lego and Athletics.

Ayscoughfee Hall School

Years 5 and 6 have recently returned from an amazing five-day residential stay in Edinburgh where they visited the Castle, Dynamic Earth and the Zoo amongst other places. Evening entertainment included ten pin bowling and karaoke. All the children had a fantastic time, as did the accompanying staff (although it probably took longer for the latter to recover!) Year 6 have also begun their annual Community Programme. This involves groups of children visiting Georgian Court for tea and conversation with residents, litter picking, helping at Agape Food Bank and with the younger children in school. They also undertake

an intensive first aid course run by St. John’s Ambulance and have lessons in managing a budget led by a professional financial advisor. After School Clubs have begun and children are enjoying a variety of experiences including cookery, touch-typing, computer coding and working with wool. As always, music plays an important part in the school and children are busy practising for the Summer Concert and Junior Production. Some children have taken singing exams and done particularly well…better perhaps, than the teacher’s performance in the Edinburgh Karaoke!

Adult Book Choice No One Home by Tim Weaver At Halloween, the residents of Black Gale gather for a dinner party. As the only nine people living there, they’ve become close friends as well as neighbours. They eat, drink and laugh. They play games and take photographs. But those photographs will be the last record of any of them. Because by the next morning, the whole village has vanished. With no bodies, no evidence and no clues, the mystery of what happened at Black Gale remains unsolved two and a half years on. But then the families of the missing turn to investigator David Raker - and their obsession becomes his. What secrets were the neighbours keeping from their families - and from each other? Were they really everything they seemed to be? And is Raker looking for nine missing people - or nine dead bodies?

Childrens Book Choice Bedlam by Derek Landy The 12th explosive novel in the internationally bestselling Skulduggery Pleasant series. ay has been a special month for this mutt – I turn ten! A decade of dog! I suppose I’m getting a little grey, but so is my human, although don’t tell her I told you. Will I be having a pedigree party? A canine knees-up maybe? I’ll be honest with you. Every day my bowls are full, my bed is warm, and my soft fur is full of hands (big and small) stroking me. I feel very loved, and that makes each day special – whether you’re pooch or person. I’ve been thinking about the places I’ve been, the changes I’ve seen, and the many meals I’ve enjoyed (my own and those left unattended). e are complex creatures. We arrive to parenthood with a wide range of life experiences that ultimately shape how we view and behave as people. Society always impacts on our behaviour and beliefs – what is seen as acceptable, what is not…and these too change with time and trends. When we embark on any new relationship – parenthood, friendship, marriage, we have expectations and ideals about how that is going to turn out. We create whole little worlds in our head of how things will be. When the reality doesn’t turn out quite how you expected we are left feeling that we have failed somehow in our new role. One emotion that I see over and over again is grief. This is typically tied up with losing someone – either someone has died or are no longer in the fold but is also always involved in the letting go of what “isn’t” or the difference between expectation and reality. Grief is valid for many situations – the old you, the you that knew what they were doing, your old pre-baby life, an old partner, a new relationship that promises to make our lives better…many situations. Tears usually always follow grief – for women, crying is about wanting something to stop. That could be the huge like the stop the world I want to get off feeling, or the smaller things like you want to stop feeling a certain way about a situation, yourself or another person. Crying is good for us – despite the societal presumption that it makes us weak. It’s a reset for our hormones (which certainly don’t help

matters when we’ve just had a baby), it gives us a release that doesn’t involve punching something and it allows us to see what really upsets us and therefore ultimately to know ourselves better. Being honest with ourselves about our grief is the first step in dealing with it but that is often the hardest. Pay attention to your tears, there might be a range of other emotions involved, but we only cry at the things that really upset us. What it is about the situation that makes it a problem for you? Then, more importantly, why is that aspect a problem. Almost always the answer will come back to expectation vs. reality with a sprinkling of personal experience on the side. I talk a lot about forgiving other people, but where grief is concerned, you have to learn how to forgive yourself. Forgiveness for all your actual and perceived shortcomings, for the mistakes you have made and those you are yet to make (yes, forgive yourself in advance – it works wonders when you actually do make the mistakes!) and forgiveness for throwing your toys out the pram when you don’t get what it is you think you want. We are human, we make mistakes but that doesn’t mean that everything is bad because one part of our lives isn’t living up to what we felt it would be. Learn to be a little more flexible and new opportunities and ways to be will open themselves up to you.

Love Annette xx

Family Life Time for Lincolnshire to start talking and include people with dementia in Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Action Week Alzheimer’s Society is urging people of Lincolnshire to join their #AskUsAnything campaign during Dementia Action Week (20-26 May) by including people with dementia and starting a conversation. Local events throughout Dementia Action Week will help people to start a conversation and unite against dementia, which affects 11000 people in Lincolnshire. Local events will include: • 20 May – Dementia Action Week in the Legends Lounge at Lincoln City FC from 10am to 4pm. Includes a Singing for the Brain session at 12.30pm, Dementia Friends Information Session at 2pm and Country Dancing at 3pm. • 20 May – 24 May – events throughout the week at Age UK Lincoln and South Lincolnshire with supporting organisations providing information and advice. • 21 May – Relaunch of the Grantham Dementia Café at Belton Park Golf Course from 10am to 12noon. • 21 May - Dementia Friends Information Session at Meridian Leisure Centre in Louth at 2pm. • 22 May – Coffee morning and information from Alzheimer’s Society staff at Boston Library from 10am to 12noon. • 23 May – Dementia Friendly Skegness events at Barratt Court from 12.30 to 1.30pm and 2pm to 3pm • 24 May – Dementia Friends Information Session at Skegness and

District Hospital from 12.30pm to 1.30pm • 24 May – Alzheimer’s Society information stand at Louth Market from 10am to 3pm. Alzheimer’s Society will also be encouraging local businesses to pledge an action to be more dementia friendly. • 26 May – Dementia Friendly Cinema screening of Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again at The Savoy in Boston at 12noon. The campaign is announced as research shows that despite almost all of us knowing someone affected by the condition, two-thirds of people living with dementia report feeling isolated and lonely. People living with dementia have starred in a video to answer questions that are busting myths and showing that people with dementia are still the same people. As part of the #AskUsAnything campaign, everyone is urged to share the video – that will appear on Alzheimer’s Society’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and in cinemas across the UK – far and wide throughout Dementia Action Week. Public awkwardness and anxiety plays a part in the isolation that people living

20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

with dementia experience – over half of the general public reported that they didn’t feel confident inviting someone with dementia to a meal at home. In the UK, one person develops dementia every three minutes so small acts of kindness such as calling a relative with dementia, visiting a neighbour or becoming a Dementia Friend, can help towards creating a dementia-friendly generation. Phil Measures, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager in Lincolnshire said: “Many people are worried about ‘saying the wrong thing’ to someone with dementia, yet a friendly face or listening ear can make the world of difference. Even in the later stages of dementia when having a conversation might become difficult, keeping in touch can bring feelings of happiness and comfort, especially as the ‘emotional memory’ remains with them long after the memory of the visit may have gone. “We all have a role in Lincolnshire to help create a dementia-friendly generation, changing the way people think, talk and act about dementia. There are currently around 2.8 million Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia

Friends in the UK and 400 dementiafriendly businesses and communities. “Alzheimer’s Society is determined to make sure no-one with dementia has to face a future alone. We are here to support anyone affected by dementia and it can start by finding a local event near you this Dementia Action Week. Unite with us now at alzheimers.org.uk/DAW.” Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the UK’s biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition, tackling the lack of understanding that means many people with the condition experience loneliness and social exclusion. The over 400 dementia friendly communities across England & Wales see local businesses committing to support their customers and employees affected by dementia. From the taxi driver to the hairdresser and the bus company to the newsagent, everyone can identify things they can do to support people with dementia to live the lives they want and be involved in their local communities.

Pinchbeck

Carni val ‘Careers’ is the theme of the Pinchbeck Carnival this year. Everyone is invited for three days of community fun centred around the carnival marquee in the Rotten Row playing field from 7th – 9th June.

In 1977 Councillor Nobby Walker and his band of helpers organised Pinchbeck’s first Carnival to celebrate the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. However, it would be five years before the next carnival was held in 1982 and it is still going strong 37 years later. The weekend begins on Friday with our annual bingo night which is held in the marquee. The tent doors open at 6.30pm for ‘eyes down’ at 7pm. It is £1 per book and there will be a licensed bar. On Saturday the parade leaves Wimberley Way at 12 noon going down Rotten Row, Brownlow Cres, Bear Lane, Knight Street and back down Rotten Row to the playing field arriving about 12.45pm. Road junctions will be closed as the parade passes and then re-opened. It will be led by our ‘Royalty’ float with our very own Carnival Queen, Abigail Slade, Prince Samuel Start and Princess Gabriela Sant’ana closely followed by decorated floats, vintage cars from the Boston Classic Car Club and the Breaston Highlanders marching band who will be providing the music and also doing a display in the arena. Back on the field, our Carnival will be officially opened at 1pm by Pinchbeck Parish Council Chairman, Councillor Richard Dobbs. As our main arena act this year we welcome The Essex Dog Display Team who will perform two displays. They are generally accepted as the premier and longest established dog display team in Great Britain and Europe. They are the only civilian dog display team ever to be selected to appear at the world’s greatest military

tattoo, The Royal Tournament and were also selected to appear in Hyde Park for Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee celebrations. The team attend up to 35 major events each year throughout the British Isles. Working with many different breeds of dogs the majority of which have been rescued, the team produce a professional highly entertaining, action packed and informative display. At the end of each display, should members of the public wish to meet the dogs, they are welcome to do so. The dogs that meet the public are selected for their excellent temperament. Other arena acts include the martial arts group, Kuk Sool Won and the Diamondz School of Dance plus there will be a tug of war competition. The children will be able to have a go at balloon modelling with Twist and Make Balloons. Compères for the day are Jan and Chris from Tulip Entertainments. Weather permitting there will be a flypast by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. There are also children’s rides, bouncy castles, stalls, refreshments and a licensed bar. In the marquee we have

the WI providing tea and cake plus a handicrafts competition for both children and adults which includes cookery and photographic categories. Entries should be bought to the marquee between 9am and 10.30am. The fancy dress competition will be judged at 1.15pm and is also open to both children and adults. There will also be photographic displays which will include photo’s of our Carnival Royalty from previous years. From 6pm we have a Vinyl evening with quizzes and games. Children welcome. Admission is £3 for adults and £1.50 for children. Excellent value as it covers both the day and evening entertainment. On Sunday, to draw the celebrations to a close there will be a United Church service of worship in the marquee at 10.30am followed by Sunday lunch at 1pm. Tickets are £7.50 and need to be purchased in advance from Chris who can be contacted on 01775 680444. To keep up to date with what is happening check out the Pinchbeck Carnival facebook page.

YOUR LOCAL WEBSITE CELEBRATING THE LOCAL AREA

LOCAL COMPUTER MAC EXPERT Festival of Learning is the biggest celebration of lifelong learning in England. The organisers hope to highlight the benefits of learning, celebrate achievements of adults who have used learning to transform their lives, and to encourage everyone to embrace learning, not just now but for life. Adult Learners’ Week (17 – 23 June 2019) is an annual campaign which celebrates and promotes adult learning opportunities. Now in over 55 countries worldwide, its intention is to signpost the huge variety of courses available to the adult learner, and to prompt adults across the country into returning to learning. This is achieved by working with a host of private and public organisations on the promotion of free taster events, local outreach activities and short courses. Since its modest beginnings in 1992, Festival of Learning (previously, Adult Learners’ Week) has handed out a variety of learning awards to around 2000 inspiring winners. Adult Learners’ Week originated from the concept of adult learning - a notion the government back then did not recognise nor fund - until former NIACE CEO Alan Tuckett OBE brought it to light. He enlisted the aid of the Women’s Institute to write letters to MPs, which consequently proved effective and changed the

government’s plans. The original Adult Learners’ Week celebrated existing learners in all of their diversity in order to encourage other people to join in and to help decision-makers understand better how adult education could influence a whole range of social policies. The idea was successful and spread to other countries. Stories of people engaging with learning were filmed on BBC, ITV and Channel4. These anecdotes exposed the power of lifelong learning – that learning changes lives and helps people reach their full potential. Ultimately, Adult Learners’ Week was born. Over the years, Adult Learners’ Week has made a large contribution to celebrate the best in adult learning and has made a wider case for more adult education opportunities and for more people to take part. So what are you waiting for? Get in touch with your local college, training centre or tutor to make that enquiry and take your first step. Good luck!

s ’ r e h t a F Day

Although founded in the USA in 1910, Father’s Day didn’t really take off until the 1930s but it is now a firm favourite on the calendar for Dads across the world. Father’s Day started in Spokane, Washington when Sonora Smart Dodd, seeing the popularity of Mother’s Day felt that there should be a day which honoured fathers. Twenty years after she had begun Father’s Day gained momentum

thanks to the backing of companies and manufacturers who saw that there was profit to be made from sales of items such as ties and pipes. With money being thrown into the promotion of the day it soon became popular and in 1938 the Father’s Day

Council was formed to assist in the promotion of the day predominantly through men’s clothing retailers. In 1972 President Richard Nixon declared Father’s Day a national holiday and by the mid-1980s the whole of the USA celebrated the holiday. Father’s Day has since spread around the world, usually celebrated on a Sunday, signalling a day off for many – if not from work then from all the usual ‘Dad jobs’ that a father is expected to do. Whilst Father’s Day follows a similar format around the world there are some countries which celebrate quite differently to the UK. In Germany, Father’s Day is always celebrated on Ascension Day, which is a federal holiday. Regionally, it is also called men’s day, Männertag, or gentlemen’s day, Herrentag. It is

tradition for groups of men to take part in a hiking tour with one or more smaller wagons, pulled by the men. In the wagons are wine or beer and traditional regional food. Father’s Day in Latvia was slow to start as the country did not want to celebrate anything celebrated by the USSR. Father’s Day was officially celebrated for the first time in 2008 when it was marked in the calendar to promote the idea that a father must be satisfied and proud of his family and children. Because this day is new to the country it doesn’t have any established traditions but it has borrowed traditions such as gift giving. In Pakistan, the World Population Foundation runs a campaign titled ‘Greening Pakistan-Promoting Responsible Fatherhood’ across

Adults £11.95 under 12’s £6.95 from 12.15pm-1.45pm Two meat carvery and two courses. (roast, carvery and sweet) the country to promote active fatherhood and responsibility for the care and upbringing of children. Russia continues the USSR tradition of celebrating Defender of the Fatherland Day instead of Father’s Day. It is usually called “Men’s Day”. In Thailand, Father’s Day is set as the birthday of the king so is currently celebrated on 5th December. Traditionally, the celebration consisted of giving your father or grandfather a Canna flower, which is considered masculine; however, this is not as commonly practiced today. Thai people wear yellow on this day to show respect for the king, because yellow is the colour of the day for Monday, the day King Bhumibol Adulyadej was born. On this day the king gives his annual speech and there is a national ceremony. Back to the UK and Father’s Day

celebrations usually take the form of a family get together, often for Sunday lunch either at home or at a restaurant. Father’s Day gifts used to be predictable – socks and toiletries (which are still popular today!), but today top gifts are more exciting and tailored towards Dad’s interests.

Food Matters National Fish & Chip Day 7 June 2019 Following the resounding success of last year’s National Fish and Chip Day, NEODA is delighted to announce that Fish & Chip lovers across the UK are coming together again to celebrate the nation’s favourite dish on Friday, 7th June 2019. National Fish & Chip Day 2019 is set to be even bigger than last year as it brings together everyone involved in creating this iconic British dish; from Fish & Chip shops, pub chains, restaurants, retailers, to the fisherman and farmers who provide the sustainable and natural ingredients needed to create this family favourite. National Fish & Chip Day is about giving fish and chips the recognition it

32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

deserves and helping to secure its position as the nation’s favourite dish. The event, which will take place on the first Friday in June every year, already has the backing of key players in the industry. The national event is once again being championed by trade organisation, The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association, who represent packers and distributors of oils and fats in the UK. NEODA President, Ryan Baker, comments, “National Fish & Chip Day has become more popular each year and in 2019 we want it to be even bigger! It’s a celebration of the stars who work hard to bring Brits their favourite traditional

takeaway. We want to bring the whole industry together to celebrate and showcase the great British institution that is Fish and Chips.” “To help build support in anticipation for the event, we are urging people to start tweeting with the hashtag #NationalFishandChipDay.” In 2018, National Fish & Chip Day was one of the biggest awareness days of the year in the UK with three quarters of the population hearing, seeing or reading something about it, so don’t miss your chance to be part of it! Pop in to your local chip shop on the day and join the celebration! Visit www.nationalfishandchipday.org.uk to find out more.

What's on

in Crowland We often overlook what is on our doorstep, so here is a guide to what is available in Crowland.

Snowden Pavilion and Sports Field Crowland Parish Council owns and maintains the Pavilion and Sports Field in Thorney Road. This is a fantastic facility which is available for the use of the community. The site is looked after by a Steward on behalf of the Council. Bookings to hire the Pavilion or Field for functions or sports matches must be made through the Parish Council Office. The following rules apply when using the Sports Field: • Pedal cycles may not be ridden. • No golf to be played. • No motorized vehicles allowed on the Snowden Field unless authorized by Crowland Parish Council.

• Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. • Dog walkers must clean up after their dogs. • Dogs are prohibited from entering the children’s play area, the adventure playground and the sports pitches. • Beware - the dykes may contain water. • No overnight parking/camping on the Snowden Field or on the Snowden Car Park without the permission of Crowland Parish Council. • Please take all litter home. • Users of this area do so at their own risk. If we all work together, we can keep this as a safe environment for all members of the community. Crowland Community Hub The former library has evolved to become a hub for the community - it’s a library, it’s a cinema, it’s a

craft fair, it’s a party, it’s a venue. Young Achievers’ Award Every year the Parish Council asks for nominations for awards to deserving young people in two age categories – Under 13 and Age 13-18. The Awards are announced in March with the closing date for nominations in May and the Presentation Awards Ceremony held in July. Nominations can be made in writing at any time during the year. Nomination Forms can be obtained from the Parish Council offices. The future of Crowland is in the hands of these young people and I am pleased to say that the future looks bright. Well done everyone.

allgate Timber specialise in high quality bespoke garden buildings, and more With a tool shop, staircase showroom and garden building displays at its Long Sutton yard Hallgate Timber has really expanded since setting up over 30 years ago. The timber yard was originally set up by Eddie and Chris Harris in their back garden in Gedney back in May 1989, and three decades on it is still a growing family business which has kept expanding. “My parents started the timber yard in 1989 after moving up to Lincolnshire from Essex,” said Mark, “It was a bit of a change for them but it quickly took off as they soon started getting requests for fencing and sheds as well.

We pride ourselves on being a very traditional family firm and always put customer ser vice first

Hallgate Timber are now based in Lime Walk, Long Sutton, and managed by Mark Harris, the son of the family. A one of the area’s largest timber, garden building and sheet material suppliers to both trade and DIY, Hallgate Timber supply clients all over the country and even onto the continent on occasion. “We moved to our current site here in Lime Walk about twenty years ago and now

offer a full range of timber buildings – everything from small bin stores, sheds, log cabins, and other garden buildings as well as fencing and general timber supplies. Hallgate Timber’s skilled team specialise in making bespoke garden buildings including home offices, studios, Dutch barns, garden sheds, play houses, summer houses, glamping buildings, stables, kennels and more. “We specialise in bespoke buildings and can pretty much make anything that people want – they can just come along with their ideas and sketches and we can work on the specifications together to achieve what they want.” As a family business Hallgate Timbers team is made up of long term serving employees, some of which have been with them since the start as well as family members of Eddie & Chris including, Son Mark, Daughter Melanie, Son-in-law Paul and grand daughter Maria. “We pride ourselves on being a very traditional family firm and always put customer service first,” added Mark. “I think part of the business’s success and longevity is down to the fact we’re a small independent firm, rather than part of a big chain and we offer a bespoke service, making virtually anything anyone wants. “We’re not afraid of a challenge and like to take on big projects, such as a large glamping site up in Scotland which we completed last year.” Hallgate Timber also supplies fencing, tools, gates, hardware, fixings, decking, cement, timber and more. As part of the expansion Hallgate Timber have now added 3 Holiday Cottages to the front of the yard.

Window Trends For 2019 What are some of the things people are looking for when they decide to replace their windows? We take a look at the trends we’re seeing on people’s wish lists; the top 3 window trends right now. Maximising Light The primary reason for installing windows in our homes is to let in light. It’s the very reason windows were invented! It makes sense then to ensure that we get the maximum amount of light possible. There are many things to consider when replacing your windows; budget, uPVC versus aluminium, timber versus timber-effect, colour, window furniture, etc. However, another important factor is the frame. If you want to maximise the amount of light coming in – and your views out – choose a window design with as little frame as possible. Aluminium frames are one of the slimmest available but there are other ways to reduce the amount of frame. Don’t assume you have to replace your windows like for like. If your current windows have fan lights – the little windows at the top – are they really necessary? How often do you use them? Would it matter if you opened the main sash instead? Most double glazed windows have a night lock option for secure ventilation. This allows you to have the main sash open in a locked position. The gap is wide enough to allow for a draft on warm days, or to let the kitchen smells out, but not so wide that the cat can escape

retain that light & airy look and feel, while subtly segmenting zones. With their black, slim frames, steel windows are striking yet minimal and can suit many different styles of homes. The steel is often recycled, strong and thermally efficient. As well as creating the industrial look indoors, there is of course the option of adding aluminium windows and doors to give your home an

Where there is a large number of windows or a large amount of glass, such as in a Conservatory or Glazed Extension, there is a special type of energy-efficient glass called Low-e Glass, or Low-emissivity Glass. This glass has a transparent coating which significantly reduces heat transfer meaning that even in the colder months, the room is a comfortable temperature.

The Industrial Look Open plan living is as popular as ever. Creating light and airy spaces by knocking down the odd wall to create a sociable living/cooking/eating area for our family and friends is on many wish lists! There are only so many walls that can be removed, though, and this is where people are starting to discover steel windows as partitions, which also taps in to the trend for the industrial look. Replacing solid walls with Crittal-style floor to ceiling steel windows is the ideal way to

industrial look from the outside, too. Aluminium windows and doors are enjoying a renaissance at the moment. Slim frames create a clean and simple look whilst letting in light and maximising sight lines. Two trends in one! . Energy Efficient Glazing All double glazing or triple glazing is – or should be these days – energy efficient. If your windows have been glazed and fitted by expert window fitters, the glazing should help to keep your home weatherproof and secure.

This is particularly useful if your windows are north or east facing. Windows with low-e glass will improve the energy efficiency of your home as well as reduce your heating bills and carbon footprint. High performance windows with ultra-low u-values and excellent sound proofing are perfect for those wanting to achieve passive house standards. If you live near a busy road or on the flight path, high performance, energy efficient windows will significantly reduce the noise from outside as well as your energy bills!

New Nissan Qashqai 1.3 DiG-T The Nissan Qashqai has been around for 11 years, and it is still a hugely popular model, ranking as Britain’s fourth most popular new motor. Only Volkswagen’s Golf, Vauxhall’s Corsa and Ford’s Fiesta fly out of dealerships more quickly. Back in 2007, consumers fell in love with the oddly named Qashqai’s blend of room, SUV styling and affordability. Since then, the Japanese automaker has kept the Qashqai name rocking – and the present incarnation of the car has been rolling off production lines since 2013. Nissan has not been resting on its laurels, though. It has been fine-tuning the Qashqai recipe over the years – and the latest tweaks aim to make it easier-on-the-pocket to run, and better than

previous 1.6-litre and 1.2-litre petrol turbos have been kicked to the kerb with a 1.3 becoming the new kid in town. The new petrol turbo powerplant comes with a couple of outputs – 140ps and 160ps - and is the engine currently housed in Mercedes-Benz’s A200. The unit is also more efficient with an exhaust particulate filter helping it make the grade in the latest emissions testing processes. As mentioned, Nissan claims the 1.3 petrol turbo is

There are many reasons why the Qashqai’s popularity is so enduring. It is comfortable to drive and with enough room for four or five adults and a decent sized boot it is a practical family car. Fresh to the Qashqai is a new infotainment unit, but the major news comes under the hood. The

cheaper to run too, as service intervals have leapt to 18,000 miles. They used to be 12,500 miles, so this is a significant increase.

The car is equipped with a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual-clutch auto ‘box, as tested for this review. It’s worth noting, though, that the automatic is only offered with the 160ps unit. Behind the wheel, this new Qashqai variant feels smooth and quick enough, but it won’t set your heart racing. Zero to 62mph arrives in 9.9 seconds, and the top speed is 124mph. While the steering is light and precise, it’s not the best handling motor in its class. The cabin is the same as ever, and the infotainment unit looks identical. However, the software is brand new, resulting in fast loading times, and the screen responds far more quickly when you touch it. It will now identify swiping and pinching motions, and the home page can be personalised with apps and shortcuts. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come factory-fitted as standard on all bar the entry-level model. The infotainment system on the Qashqai Tekna+ 1.3 DiG-T DCT we drove is still not unflawed though. The display is too dim, and you can’t see much when the sun is on it because the seven-inch matt surface gives off a lot of glare. Mind you; it’s
