LCVS welcomes commitment to recruit 1,000 social prescribing link workers A commitment to recruit 1,000 new link workers to prescribe social activities to improve people’s health has been welcomed by Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service. LCVS already employs eight social prescribing link workers across south Lincolnshire and says hundreds of people have already benefited from the more joined-up approach to their health and wellbeing they are able to provide. Social prescribing supports health and social care professionals by assisting patients to find suitable community activities that support their health and wellbeing, tackling issues such as social isolation and loneliness. NHS England has today announced plans to recruit 1,000 new social prescribing link workers by 2021, with a long term aim of them handling 900,000 patient appointments a year. It is thought that around 20 per cent of appointments at GP surgeries are not directly related to medical conditions and social prescribing can help people play an active role in managing their own health and wellbeing without pills. LCVS chief executive David Fannin said: “LCVS welcomes the announcement from NHS England to increase the number of social prescribing link workers.

“We are already committed to social prescribing within the south and east of Lincolnshire and our link workers’ efforts to find social solutions to people’s health and wellbeing issues is already making a big difference.” One person who has already been helped by LCVS’s social prescribing team is Kathy, who needed help to become more physically active and overcome a lack of confidence. An LCVS link worker was able to offer support to enable her to start walking her dog and join an exercise class, which have helped Kathy get fit and gain confidence in meeting and talking to people. Lisa added: “When we first met Kathy she wasn’t getting out much. That was having a detrimental effect on her health and she was becoming isolated. “Initially Kathy told us that she didn’t like to mix with others very much, and we respected that. However, with her now found confidence Kathy is enjoying chatting to people on the bus, she has made friends at the exercise class and is making a choice to mix.” If you know someone who would benefit from Social Prescribing, or if you would like to volunteer to work alongside LCVS link workers in providing support, please call 01205 314479 to speak to the social prescribing coordinator.

Be a part of world-beating marathon As the Boston Marathon UK goes from strength to strength an appeal has been issued for more volunteers to help with this year’s event. More than 1,500 runners are expected for the race which sets off from Boston Market Place at 9am on Sunday, April 14, for what has been dubbed the flattest marathon in the world. There will be a full marathon, a half marathon and also a 5k fun run.

Race marshals are wanted to help hand out water to runners and undertake other duties along the 26-mile marathon route. This year the new and improved course winds its way largely as before - from the centre of Boston out through Freiston, Butterwick and Benington to Wrangle and then back via Fishtoft to finish at Boston College on Skirbeck Road.

Runners will be from every part of the UK and many from different parts of the world. Each year the marathon scores new firsts, and this time it welcomes disabled runners as part of its inclusivity policy, and its first blind supported runner. If you want to help phone the chairman, Richard Austin, on 01205 368351, or book in online at www.bostonmarathon.co.uk

Veg on menu of Lincolnshire schools Lincolnshire schools are taking part in a national campaign to encourage children to eat more fresh vegetables. Veg Power and ITV have joined forces to launch the initiative to improve the nation’s health. To coincide with a new TV advert, maintained primary schools have been sent 10,000 veg power packs for their children, with fun reward charts and food safe stickers with googly eyes to encourage them to try new vegetables. “Our primary schools throughout the county are receiving the packs this week to coincide with the start of the advertising campaign rolled out across some of the channel’s biggest programmes”,

said Councillor Mrs Patricia Bradwell, executive councillor for children’s services. “It’s a fun concept which places children at the heart of a new TV advert as heroes trying to save their parents from being overrun by angry vegetables - ‘Eat Them To Defeat Them’. “The aim is to help parents and carers to engage their children with the campaign at home. If it inspires children to eat more healthily and help tackle the rising childhood obesity problem, it’s got to be a good thing. ” Launching on ITV during Coronation Street, the advert will be rolled out across the channel’s ‘biggest’ programmes (The Voice,

Dancing on Ice and Britain’s Got Talent). People can join in the conversation on social media through the hashtag #EatThemToDefeatThem. Paul Floyd, head teacher at North Somercotes Primary School, added: “We are passionate about healthy eating and our school cook and her team are always exploring creative ideas to encourage the children to try new, healthy foods. “The veg power packs look fantastic and the children can’t wait to get started! We pride ourselves on our locally sourced, home cooked, healthy school meals and we will be working closely alongside this campaign to spread the healthy eating message further across our school community.”

The campaign is supported by chef Jamie Oliver and food writer Hugh FernleyWhittingstall, funded by food companies and supermarkets, including Birds Eye, Aldi, Asda, Co-op, Iceland, Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose.

Background stats • 96% of teenagers and 80% of primary school children don’t eat enough vegetables • The UK ranks 21 out of 28 in the EU for fresh vegetable consumption • 44% of children remove at least some, if not all, of the salad from a burger • 49.2% of parents wait ‘at least’ five minutes at family mealtime for their children to finish their vegetables (30 hours a year)

New risk register for Lincolnshire The top risks which could affect Lincolnshire have been published in the ‘2018-2021 Community Risk Register’, helping emergency services and authorities to be better prepared for emergency situations. Compiled by the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum (LRF), which includes the emergency services, local authorities, health professionals and the voluntary sector amongst others, the register focuses on scenarios which are most likely to happen and considers the impact these would have on the county. From 2018-2021, the potential scenarios which are likely to cause disruption to the county are:

• Pandemic flu • East coast flooding • Inland flooding • Impacts from disease / contamination • Severe weather • Loss of critical infrastructure • Fuel shortages • Malicious acts Chair of the LRF, Assistant Chief Constable Shaun West from Lincolnshire Police, said: “It is so important for us to be to be thinking about issues or events which might affect Lincolnshire. “It allows us to work together to look at how we could prevent, mitigate, respond to and recover

from those scenarios. That’s not to say we are definitely expecting these to happen - it just helps us to plan and to be prepared. “Residents can be assured that we have a continuous programme of planning, training and exercising to ensure we are prepared in the event of an emergency.” As well as giving information on the risks affecting the county, the Risk Register also has advice for residents, businesses and community groups on how to prepare for an emergency. The new ‘2018-2021 Risk Register’ is available to view on www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/ lincolnshireprepared.

Nick’s Notes

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages

I

recently attended a conference at Manor Fresh in Holbeach Hurn. You might think that not a lot happens in these quiet rural villages, but you would be wrong! Manor Fresh who are a leading supplier of potatoes new, salad, jacket and processed - to a number of our major supermarkets nationwide have taken the lead on modern slavery and are intent on removing it from their supply chains. The conference was brought together through The Clewer Initiative. The Clewer Initiative, the Church of England’s response to modern slavery, are helping churches to respond to modern slavery in their communities, and raise awareness of how this crime has taken root on our high streets. For those wanting to understand the subject in more detail, there is an excellent book, The Clewer Initiative, written by the former Bishop of Grantham, Alistair Redfern, who chaired the conference in Holbeach Hurn and is the founder of the initiative. This is about local churches, vicars and congregations being able to find modern slavery by spotting evidence that only we as local people on the ground will notice. It is then

about working with the Police, District and County Councils to resolve the problem. The church is uniquely placed to reach people in the smallest and most remote communities as they are seen as approachable by the victims of this horrendous crime. The focus of this initiative is very much about the victims who in many cases are reluctant to see themselves as victims. Car Washes are well known for this type of crime and as a result car washes on supermarket sites in the Midlands are to be inspected as part of a pilot scheme where inspectors will check that the operators are protecting their workers, trading legally, adhering to environmental regulations, and taking care of customers and their vehicles. Unscrupulous agency gangs are also coming under the spotlight. So it was pleasing to have a representative of the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority at the conference who are working to protect vulnerable and exploited workers. Just in January of this year a Boston company lost its license with the judge commenting, “The lack of affording to them of basic rights as workers such as the right to be paid at the rate of the National Minimum Wage

There are also issues where there are houses of multiple occupation which are closely monitored by the District Council.

8 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

(which the appellant has failed to demonstrate in a number of cases by, amongst other things, a deficiency in records) and to ensure that they are paid the holiday pay to which they are entitled is demonstrative of an exploitation of those workers.” It is worth visiting the GLLA website and following their updates on Twitter, which can be quite revealing. There are also issues where there are houses of multiple occupation which are closely monitored by the District Council. But there are still stories of people who live in shocking accomodation, who are made redundant at short notice, then can not afford the high rents and are taking out loans from the owner of the property with excessive interest rates, which they can never pay back, effectively keeping them in slavery. So the conference proved to be an interesting day for me and a real eye opener. Well done to Manor Fresh on taking the lead in this area. They may regard themselves as a tiny business in terms of supermarket suppliers (£58m turnover is still quite impressive when you are only dealing in potatoes!). Interesting also to note that their employees have been working there on average for 9 years and they only employ about 1% agency workers and the factory has a real family feel about it. They are a credit to the industry.

Nick

Advice

Applying for a Blue Badge If you’re disabled or have a health condition that affects your mobility, you can apply for a Blue Badge. You can also apply for a badge if you care for a child with a health condition that affects their mobility. Councils can charge for a blue badge. The most you can be charged is £10. If you get certain benefits you’ll automatically be able to get a Blue Badge. The application will be straightforward. You don’t need to be able to drive to apply for a Blue Badge, unless you’re applying because of problems with your arms. You’re automatically eligible for a Blue Badge if you: • are registered as blind • get the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) • get Personal Independence Payment (PIP) and scored 8 points or more in the ‘moving around’ area of your assessment - check your decision letter if you’re not sure • get War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement • received a lump sum payment as part of the Armed Forces Compensation scheme (tariffs 1 to 8), and have been certified as having a permanent and substantial disability If you’re not automatically eligible It’s worth applying as you might still be able to get a badge. You’ll have to fill in an extra part of the application to show why you need one. You should do this if: • you have problems walking that are permanent, or that your doctor says are likely to last at least a year

• you can’t use your arms • you’re applying on behalf of a child aged over 2 who has problems walking, or a child under 3 who needs to be close to a vehicle because of a health condition Before you apply, make sure you have: • your National Insurance number or child reference number if you’re applying for a child • your driving licence if you have one • the number, expiry date and local council on your current blue badge, if you have one You’ll also need: • your original decision letter from the Department of Work and Pensions - if you’re automatically eligible for a badge • proof of identification, for example a birth or marriage certificate, passport, ID card or driving licence • proof of address, such as a Council Tax bill or a utility bill dated within the last 3 months • a photograph of the person the badge is for Send copies of your documents rather than originals, in case your application gets lost in the post. You can apply for your Blue Badge online on GOV.UK. Some councils also let you apply on a paper form - contact your local council to check your doctor can’t help you get a Blue Badge. It could take a long time for your application to

Citizens Advice

be processed. You should contact your council if you haven’t heard back within 6-8 weeks. You might be asked to do a mobility assessment. A health professional will look at your ability to carry out a range of mobility activities. They’ll tell your council whether they think your health condition or disability limits your ability to move around enough for you to need a badge. You also might be asked to send in extra information or speak to a member of the council. Your council will tell you in writing if this is the case. If you’re refused a Blue Badge, you can ask your council to reconsider their decision. Renewing your Blue You’ll need to renew your badge after 3 years. You’ll also have to re-apply for a badge if you stop getting the benefit your badge is linked to. You must give your Blue Badge back to your council if you no longer need it, for example if your condition improves. You could be fined up to £1,000 if you don’t. You can only get a Blue Badge from your local council or at GOV.UK. It’s worth getting help from an adviser at your nearest Citizens Advice to fill in the form properly. No one else can provide a genuine Blue Badge - if you think you’ve been scammed, you should report it. You can find more information from your local council about the Blue Badge scheme through GOV.UK.

Mini Police

Mini Police is a primary-school engagement launched in Lincolnshire in September 2018. Within the Mini Police programme we are proud that schools get the opportunity to pick their own lessons over a variety of subjects for the police facilitators to deliver, this ensures all schools have their own programme to cover their own needs. Our lessons are delivered in two ways some to elected Mini Police Officers who share their learning to the whole school and others are delivered in a whole class format across Year five and six. Recently our schools have been choosing to select the “Digital Resilience, Life in Likes” lesson, whether

this is because of the upcoming “Safer Internet Day” on the 5th February 2019 or because statistics tell us that 7 out of 10 children report that they have been bullied online or simply because post Christmas we are finding the children are discussing the new devices they now own and are becoming braver online. Whatever the reason we enjoy hearing the children’s answers and love the challenge that some questions bring during the delivery. The programme has been written to give children the tools to help protect them in these changing times. Social Media has also been proven

to be affecting children’s wellbeing so it was important that this was covered within the Mini Police Programme. Across the county children in our primary schools are being asked to share their knowledge on how long internet posts last for? Why would we use privacy settings? What our online responsibility is and what is online bullying? We also discuss Social Media age restrictions and why they are there to protect us. We share resources from CEOP and make all the children aware of the “Share Aware” website hosted by NSPCC and O2, this is a brilliant website that any one can sign into including our grown ups, parents or teachers and explains the pros and cons of each application including the age restrictions and real time feedback on why children and adults would want to use them. Have you ever thought about having an Online Family Agreement? It helps families come together over their Social Media use and opens lines of conversation which in turn helps your children approach you if they see anything worrying online. The Mini Police along with their class peers in their Digital Resilience lesson get to design an agreement to send home to their families in school, we find this the most revealing part of the lesson and the children have very strong views when discussing their own responsibilities along with their parents responsibilities around their device and Social Media use. There are lots of templates online to use if you fancy trying one at home before or after your Childs lesson; make them the experts. If you areon twitter we’d love to see them over on our Twitter page so please tag us in on @LincsMiniPolice #DigitalResilience #Onlinefamilyagreement

Children returned and it was ‘Back to Normal’ at Ayscoughfee Hall School after a well-deserved Christmas holiday. Reception Class began their new topic of ‘Fur, Feathers and Fangs’ with a talk from Mr. Colin Faulkner from the Lincolnshire Bat Protection Society and also enjoyed a visit from a vet, a veterinary nurse…and a dog called Bo…from the Riverside Vets Surgery. Year 2 meanwhile visited Spalding Fire Station where they learnt about fire safety and were able to see over a fire engine, an inland water rescue boat and experience at first-hand what happens when a 999 fire call comes in to the station. Year 6 began their new topic on the Arctic and Antarctic with a day of practical experiences and orienteering led by ‘Arctic Adventures’. School Council meanwhile

organised and ran a highly successful Bring and Buy Sale in the hall. Children also took part in the current NSPCC campaign and were able to ‘Drop their Books and Boogie’ as a thank you for raising money for this worthwhile cause. Parents were also invited in to School to hear a representative from the charity give a presentation on keeping children safe, with particular reference to online activities. Sport continues, despite the recent cold spell and we are delighted that our A team netballers are through to the County Competition in Grantham next month. Individual cross country runners also enjoyed great success in the ISA competition in Stowmarket and we wish pupil Isabella Hurn the best of luck in the national competition at Rugby School at the end of March.

New College Stamford Local employers, councilors and governors joined College staff and students to officially open the College’s latest cutting-edge refurbishment - the Digital Skills Centre. The £1 million state-of-the-art facility was supported by the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership and Midlands Engine, and is built to replicate a professional, working agency environment, kitted out with the latest smart technology showcasing cyber security, data modelling programming and virtual simulation software. Minister for Local Growth, Jake Berry, said, “We are committed to boosting economic growth across the whole of the Midlands Engine and building a country that works for everyone.” “As part of a wider £7.3 million investment from the Local Growth Fund in skills in the Greater Lincolnshire area; the allocation of £439,000 at New College Stamford will help fund the development of the college’s computing and network infrastructure. It will support learners to develop much needed digital skills across a range of priority sectors in the Greater Lincolnshire area.” The investment has further secured the College as a key stakeholder in growing and diversifying the skill set of our local and regional employees, including both students entering the workplace, and existing employers keen to upskill and future proof their workforce. IT and Business students studying at the College have already been lucky enough to access the centre, which opened in September, but the official opening marks the publication of the training opportunities also available to businesses in the form of CISCO, Microsoft and digital apprenticeship courses. Janet Meenaghan Principal and CEO at New College Stamford added, “We are delighted to officially open our latest renovation in a long list of developments over the past few years. Amongst them all, the Digital Skills Centre is the best example of our commitment to harness potential and ensure our students, local employers and community are future-proofed to support the ever-growing digital skills sector.” The event was a fantastic opportunity to mark and celebrate the beginning of a new era of learning and teaching for all.

Spalding High School pupils learn about local government More than 20 students from Spalding High school visited South Holland District Council on Thursday 24 January to learn about the importance of local democracy. The presentation, from Councillor Roger Gambba-Jones, Portfolio holder for Place, covered a wide range of topics, including the importance of an individual’s vote and when they can join the electoral register. Councillor Gambba-Jones also explained the work that councillors do, such as campaigning, functioning as case workers and acting as watch dogs in local government. He also outlined some of the other functions of the district council, including: food health and safety and

licensing of businesses. Questions were asked throughout the presentation, regarding becoming a councillor and the similarities between Councillors and Members of Parliament. Councillor Gambba-Jones said “We are delighted to see young people taking an interest in local democracy. We extend our invitation out to any other schools in the district who want their students to learn more about how their communities are run.” Teacher and group leader of Spalding High School Miss Deary said “We asked them before they came what they knew about the council and who helps run the council. Now they have a great idea of the

way the council works and what it means to be a local councillor. “They asked some very impressive questions on a range of topics, most interestingly about what is required to become a district councillor. “Overall, we are very pleased to come and attend so we may be able to show the girls what the running of their local community is all about.” If your school would like the opportunity to visit South Holland District Council to find out more about what it does as a local authority, please contact demservices@ sholland.gov.uk, or Rhonda Booth on 01775 764705. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 15

Business Focus

The Meadows Day Centre in Spalding was formally an Age Uk but last year it was decided after careful consideration that we would become an independent local charity serving local people! The centre and its services still run in the same way as before but with a local focus.

I

n Holbeach we have a furniture recycling outlet on the Fleet Road Industrial Estate which was opened in 2012, the unit has been very successful in helping to raise funds for local elderly people. The quality of donations has been amazing and has enabled us to offer some really good quality furniture for sale helping again, local residents. We also have a larger furniture unit based at Flaxmill Lane Pinchbeck and money from the two units combined helps to maintain services at our day centre including an Information & Advice service. This service is provided by a very experienced lady called Sharon who can help with filling in forms such as Attendance Allowance, blue badges, carers allowance, pension credit, personal independence payments and other benefit related issues, we do still have access to all of the Age Uk Factsheets and information guides which are very informative. The staff at the day centre are very knowledgeable about the local area and are able to direct you to other local services and organisations relevant to your personal situation. Everyone is welcome at our furniture units where collection and delivery are free locally. Please feel free to browse from Monday to Friday 9.30 to 3.30 or ring Richard on 079 468 371 33 for any enquiries. Our day centre in Spalding was purpose built in 2000 and is maintained to a high standard so is a welcoming and comfortable place where the staff aim to make later life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience for our elderly clients some of whom can be lonely and isolated living in this rural area. Up until recently we were only able to provide transport

16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

to people living in Spalding and Pinchbeck but have now been able to extend our transport to cover the Holbeach area so residents who live there can now access our centre on a Monday, we have two adapted minibuses which both have tail lifts so enabling easy access for clients with mobility issues. The day centre is open Monday to Friday from 9.00am to 3.00pm at an all-inclusive cost of ÂŁ24.00, a freshly cooked two course traditional lunch is provided by 2 inhouse cooks using fresh local produce, diabetics and vegetarians are catered for. Our other services include day care by the hour at ÂŁ8 for those who find a full day too long , bathing in an easy access bath, hairdressing and chiropody. There is an extra charge for these services which by appointment can also be accessed by members of the public.

Happiness For Beginners by Carole Matthews Molly runs her farm as an alternative school for kids who haven’t thrived in mainstream education. It’s full on, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. So when the well-groomed Shelby Dacre turns up at Hope Farm asking to enrol his son Lucas, Molly isn’t fazed. But Lucas is distant and soon Molly realises he might be more of a handful than she anticipated. And then there’s the added problem that his dad is distractingly handsome. Molly has her beloved farm to think of - could letting Lucas and Shelby in be a terrible mistake, or the start of something wonderful?

Most families in Lincolnshire will receive a Bookstart Baby pack from the Registrar when they register their baby’s birth.

Walking, wagging and reading - Otis has been busy! This month he’s getting into the spirit of a fun event that’s celebrated all over the world – and he’s excited to tell you about it…

oof! Woof! Will you be celebrating World Book Day? It’s on March 7th. I shall be a reading Rover! A bookish Beagle! A literary Lassie! Mind you, every day seems to be World Book Day in my human family’s kennel. Each one of them always has a book on the go. Fact, fiction, football annuals, fairy tales – they all make for waggy tails! Well, certainly smiles on their faces. My human is currently digging herself a little vegetable patch and has had her nose stuck in a selection of gardening books. Apparently, my paw prints all over the soil probably won’t help her parsnips grow. We’ll see! To prepare for my arrival, my human read lots of books about looking after Labradors. She tells me they

featured lots of good words like ‘friendly’, ‘keen’ and ‘intelligent’. And, erm, some not so good ones, like ‘greedy’ and ‘over-enthusiastic’. Hmph. Who, me?

The little humans will be dressing up as their favourite fictional characters to celebrate. I’m bracing myself for quite a shock as Willy Wonka and Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) come bounding through the house. There’s a saying that everyone has a book in them. I agree! I should think there are maybe two in me. There wasn’t much I didn’t eat when I was a puppy. Don’t you just love that ‘I’ll just read one more chapter’ feeling? Young and old, I’m sure we can all relate to simply not wanting to put a good book down. Every night, I lay on the little two-legged puppy’s bed to hear him and my bigger human read together. I’m comfy, cosy and sooo sleepy. I just doze off! We dogs love a bedtime story too..

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

’m not really sure how I haven’t spent more time in A&E with number 1 boy. He has 2 left feet and it’s a running joke he could trip over a bus ticket standing in a queue. I’m not sure who he gets his balance and special awareness from! That said, we do go through quite a selection of first aid items each month – and I have learnt the hard way that you not only need a kit in your home, but one in the car too. Accidents very rarely happen to us when we’re home, always out! Both kits contain much of the same things, but just smaller, travel size in the car kit, or items more suited to being outdoors. 1 Thermometer plus temperature relieving medicines like paracetamol and ibuprofen. Consider battery free thermometer strips for the car – it guarantees they will work when you need them. Sachets of paracetamol etc and a spoon are a much better use of space when you’re out and about. 2 Plasters, bandages, steri-strips, lint-free swabs and pads, a sling. A selection of sizes and shapes are good. Cardboard packets are easily squashed in the car, consider a small plastic lidded pot to keep the tidy for as long as possible. Brightly coloured and character plasters are always a winner with small people (and me too if I’m honest! Who doesn’t love a Pepper Pig plaster?!) 3 Sterile water. Good for washing

out scrapes and wounds, also good for grit in eyes and burns. Tap water is fine at home, but more difficult to come across out and about. 4 Cold packs. Multi-use freezer packs for home, single pack ‘snap to activate’ packs for the car. Great for bumps, bruises, scrapes and sprained ankles. 5 Sharp scissors, tweezers, a pen 6 Micropore. Great for sticking things down or together. 7 Alcohol free wipes (alcohol wipes can really sting!!) 8 Other useful medicines like bite and sting cream, arnica (cream or homeopathic remedies), Lavender Oil, Tea Tree Oil etc Not all first aid requires a follow up at A&E, but use your intuition and common sense. If you feel there is an ongoing problem, seek additional help. No one knows your child like you do! Another good tip is to get yourself on a Baby & Child First Aid course. In just a few hours you can learn some great life saving and basic skills to help you feel more confident if an accident happens. IF you would like to book a 2 hour workshop with us, please get in touch!

How to choose the right childcare Choosing the right kind of childcare to support your child’s learning and development is a big step. Making the right decision can feel overwhelming when there are so many options available to you. First steps — identifying different types of childcare Each child and family is different, and as such, the most appropriate type of childcare will depend on your own family circumstances and the specific needs of your child. Some questions to consider: • What are my child’s needs? What do they require at their age? • What kind of care and learning do I want my child to have? • How often each week does my child need caring for? • What will be the most costeffective arrangement for our family? Then you will need to familiarise yourself with the different types of childcare that are out there. Crèches A crèche provides short-term occasional care for children under the age of eight and can take many forms. A crèche may be offered to you if you are attending training, visiting a leisure centre or may be provided in shopping centres. A crèche must be registered with Ofsted if it operates for more than 4 hours a day and for more than 14 days per year. Children’s Centres Children’s Centres offer all families with children under five a range of services, information and support in their local community. The support available varies according to local need, but most centres will offer the following: advice during pregnancy, health visitor services, drop-in sessions, adult learning, employment support, debt advice and much more besides. Many centres also offer childcare, baby and toddler groups and crèches. Pre-schools and playgroups Pre-schools and playgroups offer care for specific sessions, which can last for between two-and-a-half to four hours a day. Many provide extra services such as breakfast clubs, lunch clubs and holiday play schemes. Day nurseries/daycare Day nurseries generally care for children from six weeks old until school age and primarily cater for the needs of working parents. They are normally open all day and offer the choice of either full-time or parttime care. Some may also provide weekend care

for parents who work shifts. They are run by various different groups including local schools or councils, members of the community, a workplace or by a private provider. Nursery schools and nursery classes Nursery schools are aimed at preschool children aged three and four years old. Children start to attend a nursery school or nursery class in the September after their third birthday. A nursery school is a separate school that is only used by children under five years old. A nursery class is part of an existing primary school. Most nursery schools and nursery classes offer part time places and operate during term-time only. Childminders Childminders are based in their own homes and provide childcare for small groups of children. They give your child the chance to meet and play with other children, while being cared for in a home environment. They are usually self-employed and decide which hours they work. Home-based childcare A home-based childcarer is a person (over 18 years old) who is employed by a parent to look after children in the family home. Home-based childcarers can care for children of any age and can work flexible hours. They can choose to register with Ofsted on the voluntary part of the childcare register. Out-of-school care Out-of-school groups normally provide care for school-age children, up to the age of 11. This can be: before school, after school, during the school holidays, holiday schemes and play centres. Clubs that provide for children under eight years must be registered with Ofsted. Clubs that only cater for children aged over eight do not need to be registered but can choose to register on the voluntary part of the childcare register. Clubs that are managed by

20 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

schools are automatically registered under the school’s registration. Making a shortlist Make a shortlist of different childcare available in your area then make contact with them to arrange a visit. Once you arrive, the childcare provider should be happy to show you around and answer any of your questions. They should discuss how they will settle your child and support their development and learning. You can also ask to see their policies and procedures. Before you visit, ensure you check their Ofsted report to make sure they meet the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements covering children’s welfare and the quality of their care. What to think about when choosing childcare The two most important things to notice: • Firstly, how are the staff with your child as soon as you walk through the door? They should be showing a natural warmth, openness and interest in a new child coming through the door. • Secondly, what does your gut tell you? If something doesn’t feel right to you, then go with your gut and look elsewhere. Good questions to ask when choosing childcare Staff and managers should be willing to talk to you, make you feel welcome and answer any questions you have. • Does the setting (or space) feel

welcoming and nurturing? • Do the staff look happy in their work? • How are they interacting with the children? Do they seem caring and affectionate? • Is the setting clean? • Is there enough space, including an outdoor play area? • Are children taken out to enjoy outings and walks? • Are the children happy and absorbed in activities? • Is there a range of activities and resources available? • Is the environment safe and stimulating for the children? • Are parents given information about their child’s progress and achievements? • What training, skills and experience do the carers and childcare workers have? • What happens in cases of accidents and emergencies? • Are the toilets and basins clean and accessible? • Is the equipment safe and well maintained? • Are facilities available for changing nappies and potty training? • Are the meals and snacks healthy and nutritious? • Has the setting achieved a quality assurance award? • How flexible can the childminder/ setting be with last-minute extra days that you may need? •Is there a high staff turnover? If so, how does the setting ensure a sense of continuity for your child? You’ve made a choice. Now what? Remember that your child needs time to settle into their environment, adjust to their new routine and get to know their key person and the other children. You are encouraged to stay with your child at first so that they can be gradually introduced to activities and their new environment. By working closely with your childcare provider, you can help your child to be comfortable, happy and secure, and thoroughly enjoy their time. Follow these simple steps for maintaining healthy eyes well into your golden years. Have a comprehensive dilated eye exam You might think your vision is fine or that your eyes are healthy, but visiting your eye care professional for a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to really be sure. When it comes to common vision problems, some people don’t realize they could see better with glasses or contact lenses. In addition, many common eye diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic eye disease and age-related macular degeneration often have no warning signs. A dilated eye exam is the only way to detect these diseases in their early stages. During a comprehensive dilated eye exam, your eye care professional places drops in your eyes to dilate, or widen, the pupil to allow more light to enter the eye the same way an open door lets more light into a dark room. This enables your eye care professional to get a good look at the back of the eyes and examine them for any signs of damage or disease. Your eye care professional is the only one who can determine if your eyes are healthy and if you’re seeing your best. Know your family’s eye health history Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has

been diagnosed with a disease or condition since many are hereditary. This will help to determine if you are at higher risk for developing an eye disease or condition. Eat right to protect your sight You’ve heard carrots are good for your eyes. But eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, particularly dark leafy greens such as spinach, kale, or collard greens is important for keeping your eyes healthy, too. Research has also shown there are eye health benefits from eating fish high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, tuna, and halibut. Maintain a healthy weight Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and other systemic conditions, which can lead to vision loss, such as diabetic eye disease or glaucoma. If you are having trouble maintaining a healthy weight, talk to your doctor. Wear protective eyewear Wear protective eyewear when playing sports or doing activities around the home. Protective eyewear includes safety glasses and goggles, safety shields, and eye guards specially designed

to provide the correct protection for a certain activity. Most protective eyewear lenses are made of polycarbonate, which is 10 times stronger than other plastics. Many eye care providers sell protective eyewear, as do some sporting goods stores. Quit smoking or never start Smoking is as bad for your eyes as it is for the rest of your body. Research has linked smoking to an increased risk of developing age-related macular degeneration, cataract, and optic nerve damage, all of which can lead to blindness. Be cool and wear your shades Sunglasses are a great fashion accessory, but their most important job is to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation. Give your eyes a rest If you spend a lot of time at the computer or focusing on any one thing, you sometimes forget to blink and your eyes can get fatigued. Try the 20-2020 rule: Every 20 minutes, look away about 20 feet in front of you for 20 seconds. This can help reduce eyestrain. Clean your hands and your contact lenses properly To avoid the risk of infection, always wash your hands thoroughly before putting in or taking out your contact lenses. Make sure to disinfect contact lenses as instructed and replace them as appropriate. Practice workplace eye safety Employers are required to provide a safe work environment. When protective eyewear is required as a part of your job, make a habit of wearing the appropriate type at all times and encourage your co-workers to do the same.

Bold New Step

for Local Flooring Specialists

B

ack in the summer of 2018 Louise and Simon proudly opened their showroom doors to L & S Carpets and Flooring Ltd and since then has been going from strength to strength. The family have always lived locally and after having many years of experience and celebrating Simons’ 25th year of fitting this year decided to open up their own showroom. The doors opened to the public late July to showcase a wide range of flooring products. The showroom holds various different flooring types such as: carpets, vinyl, laminate, Karndean, Moduleo, Quickstep and more. The showroom has specifically designed demonstration flooring for most flooring types as a visual example for customers to see when finding the perfect flooring for them. With the many years of experience the family decided to design the showroom to provide a service for every customers’ individual needs. What makes L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd unique is the fact that they are one of the largest stockists in the area. As well as having many different flooring stands, they also have a variety of carpets and vinyl on roll stock which means customers and take their carpet or vinyl home that day. The showroom holds over 50 carpets and vinyls on roll stock all offering a range of different styles, textures and prices. In addition to roll stock the showroom also offers carpet and vinyl remnants and off cuts of various shapes and sizes. This is the piece of flooring left from the roll stock after the greater part has been brought. There is also a small roll section of entrance matting with remnants and off cuts included.

Carpets and vinyl aside, L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd has much more to offer. Quickstep flooring is a diverse range of many collections of laminate, engineered wood and LVT. Quickstep flooring is simple to maintain and has stunning results. As well as L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd being a registered quickstep retailer, they also are Karndean specialists. Karndean is a vinyl flooring with many unique ranges. They have various sizes of design strips which are added between planks and tiles for a natural looking effect. Karndean Design Flooring has a large selection of products in the showroom and one main attraction is the Karndean table. This is a large table that has all different styles of Karndean flooring inside for customers to try their own looks and ideas by customising the flooring to what they are looking for. The demonstration flooring is a example as to what customers can create for what is suitable for them. Another style of flooring L&S offer is Moduleo; a luxury vinyl flooring combining the products natural beauty with the products durability. Fun fact: L&S

are the only retailer of Moduleo within 15 miles radius. If you are looking for carpet binding, L&S are able to offer their service to bind together the edge of a carpet to wool to prevent fraying. The finished product could be used for many reasons such as rug to protect flooring from scratches and scuffs to a runner down the stairs. The service is completely custom, customers can choose any colour wool, shape and size of the carpet to bind giving it a personal touch. The showroom also holds a small section for a chance for customers to look and feel different artificial grass. This is a supply only service at a great price. L&S Carpets and Flooring Ltd have a small friendly team of Simon and son, Craig fitting, Louise and daughter Nicole with daughter-in-law Xiana in the office. The team are all looking forward to welcoming you to the showroom and the future of their business.

your

wedding day How much are couples able to negotiate pricing with venues and suppliers? Venues tend to not be very flexible with their pricing, but there are a few factors that will influence their willingness to negotiate:

1 2

Pick off-season months and be flexible with your date. For example, selecting a Sunday in October gives you much more leverage than a Saturday in July.

Your engagement length is important as well. If you are trying to book 18 months into the future, pricing will likely be a lot more set in stone. However, if you are looking at dates in the next six months, which is shorter than the typical booking cycle (for dates that probably wouldn’t book otherwise), you have a great deal more leverage.

3

. Your guest count: If the venue is also handling the catering then a larger guest count will also give you more influence.

4

. Your ability to connect with the salesperson is critical; let them know that their venue is your first choice, and you’re working with a limited budget. Striking the right balance of being persistent, persuasive and respectful is key. If you can “engage” with them, they are more likely to make concessions and be flexible. Suppliers do tend to be a bit more flexible than venues when it comes to pricing:

1

If you are getting married in an unusual location or a destination wedding, this can work in your favour since vendors like to create a portfolio of events at a variety of venues. For example, if you are getting married in a castle, you may wish to consider a photographer that wouldn’t normally cover such weddings. You may have the cost of travel but sometimes they will truly negotiate their pricing if it expands their portfolio.

Top Tip:

2

Let your suppliers know that you are happy to have your wedding published in media outlets since this is a critical engine for vendors to promote themselves.

32 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Negotiating with suppliers is truly an art form. If you contact them with the expectation upfront that you are entitled to a discount, most of the time, you will not get it. However, in my experience if the they feel that you truly value their service or product, and it truly is an issue of budget, they are more willing to be open to providing some discounts. Don’t ask: ‘What is the cheapest price that you can give me?’ ‘Why is that so expensive? Can you give me a discount?’ ‘Why do you need to charge so much? It’s not like you have any hard costs (for service-oriented vendors like videographers)...’ . ‘XYZ Company only charges X price — why are you charging more?’

Make your day special but always keep an eye on your budget. It’s easy to think ‘oh it’s only £300 extra’ but those moments can soon run away with your money!

As with your venue, let each supplier know they are your numberone choice. Try to connect to them and explain what you believe will make your wedding special.

3 4

a top recommended supplier and are booking a Friday wedding in January in just a few months time — you will inevitably get the best possible pricing!

Time of year, date of the week and the booking window of your wedding will also impact your negotiating ability. If you call

Do say: ‘We would love to work with you; however, the estimate is more than we expected. Do you have any recommendations on any changes that we can make to help bring the cost down?’ Or you can see if the supplier in question might be willing to throw in some complimentary bonus items. For example, a photographer may throw in an engagement photo shoot, a florist may upgrade the type of flowers that they feature without charging you extra, or a band may perform for more time. If you see a fee on any line item in the contract — for example, an overtime fee or an early setup fee — you can always ask if that is something the vendor is willing to waive. It doesn’t hurt to ask politely!

your

wedding day 1. Avoid guest list bloat. Although you might be tempted to throw everyone you know on your guest list, that isn’t always a great idea. With each addition you make, you’re adding additional costs while also making your wedding less intimate. Think that everyone you know has a post it with a value on their forehead. To save as much as you can, try inviting fewer people and making the event more intimate. Start by whittling your list down by 20%, then another 20%. Then see if you’re happy with it.

2. Ask for wedding help instead of wedding gifts. Asking family and friends to offer help or services that align with their talents in lieu of a gift is a great way to keep your wedding on a budget. Do you know a photographer? Someone in a band or even a whizz on a computer could help with invitations. 3. Hold the ceremony at home, or outdoors. Renting a building or function hall for your ceremony and reception can be very expensive. Instead, consider using your own home (or the home of

Ayscoughfee Hall is a beautiful Grade I listed building set in five acres of unique public gardens ideal for your photographs. This intimate venue, just minutes from Spalding town centre, is licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 40 people.

a parent) for your reception. If you go the outdoor route, however, it’s best to have a back-up plan in case of bad weather; that might mean renting a sturdy tent if rain is forecast, or a few industrial fans if it’s an extremely hot day — or simply stuffing everyone inside the house to wait out a storm. 4. Do the catering yourself, or hire a family-owned restaurant. If this isn’t your forte, look around for a family-owned restaurant and ask the owners directly to cater your wedding. Family-owned restaurants are always the first place to check

– they will almost always go the extra mile to make your wedding special and are generally more understanding of your particular budget needs. 5. Go minimal with the flowers. Instead of spending boatloads of money on flowers that will die shortly after the reception, keep it simple but elegant — for instance, a single rose for each bridesmaid and a very small bouquet for the bride. If you know someone with a rose bush, you can actually make your own bouquets the day before the ceremony by cutting the roses

Included are the services of our dedicated Wedding Coordinators and exclusive use of the south facing Garden Room for light refreshments before and after the ceremony. There is ample public parking nearby for your guests. Ayscoughfee Hall Churchgate, Spalding, Lincolnshire PE11 2RA tel: 01775 764555 email: museum@sholland.gov.uk wwwayscoughfee.org

yourself and trimming away the thorns. Another cheap wedding idea – go with fake flowers instead. It’s likely that no one will even notice, and you could save a bundle by making the arrangements yourself well ahead of time. 6. Skip the gifts. While it’s considered customary to give gifts to your best man and bridesmaids in some circles, it isn’t always necessary. Instead of buying gifts they may not even want or enjoy, consider writing them a special note to say “thanks” instead. If your friends know that you’re trying to have a frugal wedding, they will understand. 7. Make your own invitations. With a quality home printer and some time, you can make very classy invitations on your own. 8. Borrow stereo equipment or use yours from home. Rather than hiring a DJ, just use your own home stereo equipment, or equipment you borrow from a friend. Put speakers around the dance floor area – there’s no need to spread them around the entire reception room. Create a playlist that features a few hours’ worth of your favourite songs – or see if you have a friend who might want to make a playlist for you. Choosing your own songs is a great way to personalize your entire experience. 9. Stock the bar yourself. Alcohol is a big expense when it comes to a lot of weddings, and it’s also a big variable you can play around with to cut costs. Instead of opting for a full open bar, for instance, you can save money

WHERE

offering just beer and wine, or a free cocktail hour followed by a cash bar. If you do rent a function hall, ask if they’ll let you supply your own alcohol instead of using the venue’s, which can be a big money-saver. Keep in mind that while it’s more cost-efficient to buy a keg of beer instead of cases, any leftover beer will go to waste, whereas you can store excess bottles for months. And that’s helpful, since it’s a good idea to overestimate — you don’t want to run out of drinks halfway through the reception. 10. Price shop for decorations – and consider buying used. If you know what you’re looking for ahead of time, you can simply wait until a sale and “pounce” when the time is right. Meanwhile, you can also consider buying used centerpieces and decorations. Recent brides often sell their decorations - you can save a bundle of money and effort! 11. Buy dresses off the rack – and on sale. If you want to save on bridesmaid dresses, try to avoid ordering custom dresses altogether. Instead, head to a few stores with dresses in the sales and see if you can all find something “off the rack.” This works best if your colours are chosen ahead of time and if the store you’re shopping at carries plenty of sizes. To minimise spats within your wedding party, you can also shop ahead of time and only have them try on dresses you already approve of. wear matching suits. It’s often useful to rent the wedding party’s suits as a group through the same business, as you’ll often get a group rate. 13. Choose affordable wedding rings. Wedding bands are traditionally an important part of the marriage ceremony, symbolic of your commitment to each other. That doesn’t mean they have to cost you a fortune. 14. Plan a simple honeymoon, not an ostentatious one. A huge, over-the-top honeymoon might sound fun, but it’s far, far cheaper (and often more enjoyable) to stay closer to home. Instead of planning a big, expensive trip, focus on what matters: Unwinding after those hectic weeks leading up to your wedding, and savouring some time alone with your new spouse. An 18-hour flight across the world with multiple flights isn’t going to help in that regard. You could even just hop in the car and spend a week or two seeing all of the local sights you’ve never had time to see until now. Whatever you do, just enjoy this time together. 16. Try not to mention the ‘w-word’ at first Many florists, bakeries, photographers, and musicians mark

up their services — sometimes by a lot — just for weddings. The same cover band that plays at a bar downtown on a Saturday night for £400 might charge £2,500 for a wedding. This is partly because of the added pressure and preparation that a wedding involves, but it’s also partly just because they can. When shopping around, try and get straightforward quotes for the services you need — without mentioning the wedding part at first. You need a tasteful cake for 100 people. (It could be a corporate event or retirement party.) You need someone to photograph an outdoor event for about five hours. At some point, you’ll need to come clean and explain that it’s for your wedding, especially before signing a contract. But if you can get a ballpark estimate for the services you need before revealing that it’s actually for your big day, you might have better negotiating leverage when they suddenly try to apply a hefty wedding markup for the exact same service. 17. Plan, plan, plan. When you’re trying to have a wedding on a budget, it’s important to plan ahead. List everything you can think of and walk through these items step by step. The earlier you get started – and the more things you think about early on – the less “last-minute stress” you’ll have, and the more time you’ll have to find sales and discounts and research other good ideas. 18. Don’t stress. Something will probably go wrong at the last minute – a little detail of some sort won’t work out. Don’t worry about it. Just assume something little is going to go wrong and avoid the urge to throw money at the problem. Most likely, no one will even notice the little issue, and quite often someone in your wedding party (or someone helping out) will come up with a pretty good solution to fix things.

the history of

Mother’s Day So is it Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day? And how did this annual celebration of maternity actually begin, anyway? Everyone celebrates Mother’s Day in their own way, from kids preparing mum a muchdeserved breakfast in bed, to older children treating their mother to a quintessentially British afternoon tea. But while we see it as a universally beloved day of affection and celebration, Mothering Sunday isn’t technically what you think it is. It’s not even the same thing as Mother’s Day.

The Original “Mothering Sunday” Mothering Sunday began as an explicitly religious event of the 16th Century, with no connection to mothers at all. The word “mothering” referred to the “mother church”, which is to say the main church or cathedral of the region. It became a tradition that, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, people would return to

their mother church for a special service. This pilgrimage was apparently known as “going a-mothering”, and became something of a holiday event, with domestic servants traditionally given the day off to visit their own families as well as their mother church. Simnel Cake One of the tastiest traditions of Mothering Sunday was the baking

of Simnel cake. Often regarded as a purely Easter-related confection, this rich fruit cake is also tied to Mothering Sunday, as a bit of indulgence to make up for the general austerity of Lent (and a nice home-baked present to take home to your mother). Consisting of layers of cake and marzipan, a traditional

Simnel cake also reflects the religious overtones of the event by being adorned with 11 balls of marzipan, representing all the disciples of Jesus, minus Judas. Saving Mothering Sunday Despite its long existence in British culture, Mothering Sunday eventually fell out of fashion at the dawn of the 20th Century. This is where a lady named Constance

36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

Penswick-Smith enters the picture. The daughter of a vicar, she thought the loss of Mothering Sunday was a great shame, and worked hard to rekindle interest, even writing a book whose title clearly laid out her ambition - it was called The Revival of Mothering Sunday. As if that wasn’t enough, she also founded the Society for the Observance of Mothering Sunday. Her determination paid off, and the fading festival was restored to the culture of the country, only with much more of a focus on celebrating motherhood. And this was due to an American influence... Mother’s Day So if our event is properly called Mothering Sunday, what is “Mother’s Day”? Technically speaking it’s a completely unrelated American event, invented by a woman called Anna Jarvis in 1908. Her initial inspiration was a desire to honour her own mother, who had been a militant peace activist during the US Civil War. Anna Jarvis’s growing ambition to create a formal “Mother’s Day” for all American mothers was literally laughed out of the room at first, with officials jokingly saying that it might lead to a “Mother-in-Law’s Day”. Anna Jarvis wasn’t easily put off, though, and in 1914 US President Woodrow Wilson officially signed

Mother’s Day into existence. The Revolt Against Mother’s Day It was Anna Jarvis who inspired our own Constance Penswick-Smith to revive the more religiouslyflavoured Mothering Sunday over here, although the two separate events have since become conflated in most people’s minds. Interestingly, Anna Jarvis herself was the first person to condemn the growing commercialisation of Mother’s Day, and started organising boycotts of the event she herself created. One of her anti-Mother’s Day protests even led to her arrest for disturbing the peace, and she was particularly appalled by ready-made Mother’s Day cards, saying “A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world.” Buying chocolates was a no-no as well. “You take a box to Mother,” she scoffed, “and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment!”

Home & Property

How To Add

Value To Your Bathroom Bathrooms continue to be one of the most heavily scrutinized rooms during property valuations and inspections. That’s bad news if yours is either shabby or outdated, but it also means that you can add substantial value to your property with a simple bathroom remodelling. Making the right choices can see you more than making back the initial investment when it comes to negotiating a final price, so use this quick and easy guide to add value to your bathroom. Clean or Replace Tiles Flooring is the number one part of a bathroom which is frequently forgotten about during remodelling. This is probably down to the fact that flooring is relatively easy to get used to, and doesn’t seem like a particularly important part of the room. However, this is one of the first things which people will pay attention to when they enter the room, and evidence of a new floor will ensure them that that room is well taken care of. You can have tiles professionally cleaned for a quick solution, but replacing the floor itself is sure to pay off when the property’s value is ascertained. Tiles are extremely long lasting too, which means once you install them, they are there for the longhaul. Upgrade Fixtures If either your bath, shower, toilet, or sink is more than 10 years old, you should certainly consider finding replacement units. These fixtures will almost certainly be showing their age, and they’ll tend to indicate to prospective buyers that they will soon need to carry out the work themselves. You don’t need to necessarily find the latest and most luxurious models, but ensure that each

fixture looks modern and boasts energy-efficient credentials. Also, get rid of your shower curtain and fit a screen instead – shower curtains instantly drop the perceived value of a bathroom and in our opinion bath screens look great. Add Eco-Friendly Accessories Making a room more environmentally-friendly should be at the top of your list across the house, but it can be especially important in a bathroom. Most new-builds you’re competing with will have these features fitted as standard, so you want to be able to demonstrate that your bathroom is just as energy-efficient. Low-flow toilets, water-saving showerheads, and heated towel rails can all help bring down the monthly bills. This is important in the long run as you will be saving money each month without needing to the last bathroom less. Bathroom renovations can seem tiresome, but that’s also exactly how prospective owners feel! Save them the trouble by making these changes yourself, and add value while you’re doing it. So, whether you are looking to sell your home, or just want to add value the bathroom is a room you should definitely carry out work.

New Honda CR-V Hybrid PROS ‘N’ CONS à Looks à Power à Handling à Comfort à Storage space

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(New Honda CR-V Hybrid EX AWD – as tested )

D

iesel seems to be dying, and that’s a shame for a lot of people. There are a lot of good diesel-driven cars out there, and the scrapyard is where government leaders would like to see them. Therefore, it seems odd that automakers are still churning them out. Indeed, many of the car launches I go on include oil-burners. However, that’s not the case with Honda. The Japanese firm has committed itself to an electrified future and claims that by 2025 twothirds of its European transactions could encompass electrified vehicles (EVs). The brand aims to usher in a full

urban EV later next year, but its first step towards this new age is a hybrid version of the CR-V. The model is in its fifth-generation, and the hybrid powertrain is already housed within the Accord saloon in the United States. That means it’s a proven unit, so its debut in the CR-V over this side of the pond looks like a safe bet. The system is named Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD), and it facilitates a trio of drive settings. All-electric can be selected in EV Drive, but only for limited amounts of time, due to the minuscule 1kWh battery bundle. Hybrid Drive utilises the clout of the 2.0-litre petrol engine, which runs at low revs to run one of

the Honda’s electric motors. This then produces the muscle used by the other motor for momentum. Engine Drive shuts a clutch to allow the front axle to be propelled by the petrol motor, while the transmission is a single fixed ratio transmission. Both all-wheel drive and front-wheel drive versions are offered. So, in Hybrid Drive, the simplest way to understand how the Honda powertrain works is to imagine it being akin to a hydrogen fuel cell car – but, instead, it’s using petrol to produce a charge for the electric motor. The CR-V Hybrid favours EV Drive or Hybrid settings when it’s not on the motorway. This means the engine is either not running, or it’s just trickling power to the battery pack. But the best bit is that the Honda automatically sorts through its trio of modes depending on what your driving is like - and the changes are virtually flawless. If driven conservatively, the CR-V Hybrid is a hushed and comfy car. The cabin is refined, and the switchgear falls easily to hand. The paddles behind the tiller enable you to change the intensity of the energy recuperation system, as well. There’s also a Sport setting, which is meant to

à Max speed: 112 mph à 0-62 mph: 9.2 secs à Combined mpg: 51.4 à Engine layout: 2.0-litre 4-cylinder petrol + two electric motors à Max. power (PS): 184 à CO2: 126 g/km

Price: £37,255 give a quicker throttle response – but its influence is minimal. The ‘green’ Honda rides pleasantly and absorbs potholes well, but the heavy car does suffer from body roll in corners. Generally, it feels like a decent set-of-wheels, though, and that’s where most of its allure lies. The CR-V Hybrid’s 51.4mpg fuel efficiency isn’t earth-shattering, but it’s comparable with most similarly-sized diesel-driven vehicles. It’ll be easier on the pocket than the standard petrolpropelled version, that’s for sure. Alas, practicality isn’t as good with the CR-V Hybrid. This is because the environmentally-friendly power system cuts into the Honda’s boot space, slashing it from 561 litres to 497 litres. There’s a lot of handy room in the cabin, though - and leg and headspace in the rear are better than ever. Keep an eye out for the new CR-V Hybrid – you can order it now, but it officially goes on sale in the UK in February 2019.
