Welcome to the May issue We are officially in holiday season, the upcoming half term is when it seems many of you get away with children at school, next year my holidays will have to factor around these and to be honest I am not looking forward to the price tag or how busy places will be. But for this year we are looking forward to our family holiday very soon. In this month’s magazine Annette from The Village Midwives talks about self care, Otis explores Willow Fen and we look at what is involved if you are thinking about fostering or adopting a child. Did you know it’s National Smile Month in May? Get brushing and flossing to show off those pearly whites! It’s not always to talk about but Death Matters Week is in May and it is all about ‘Are Your Ready?’ Tough questions to be asked and deal with for you and others that need to be talked about. In Home and Property we talk everything extensions, we also look at BBQ food in Food and Drink and Tim test drives the new Kia Nero. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue, fingers crossed for some good weather and see you next month!

Rt Hon Sir John Hayes CBE MP shows his support for disabled people at Scope parliamentary drop-in South Holland District Council have taken another important step in expanding its stock of housing for residents in the area, signing an agreement to purchase 18 homes across the district from a local building company. The one, two and three bed homes are situated in Donington, Cowbit and Moulton. They will provide good-quality housing giving residents access to well-maintained, affordable properties that meet their needs. The purchases also continue to further the council’s ambition to support and partner local businesses in South Holland, with the houses being acquired from Spalding based developers Ashwood Homes. Six of the homes across the three sites will also be available as part of the Council’s shared ownership scheme. The scheme will allow people who cannot afford the mortgage on 100% of a home to buy a share of the property (between 25% and 75% of the value), and pay rent on the remaining share. Shares can be increased over time, eventually raising to full ownership. More details on these properties can be found on rightmove. It adds to other development work already underway for the Council, including the building of 34 new affordable homes underway at Small Drove in Weston, which will also include shared ownership opportunities.
Cllr Colin Johnson, portfolio holder for corporate delivery and strategic oversight was delighted to see the council expanding its housing stock, saying: “It’s great news that South Holland District Council is continuing to invest throughout the district, and these new homes will add to our existing developments in providing excellent, well-equipped places for our residents to live.
“Quality and desirable housing, built with the use of local contractors and developers, is invaluable to supporting the growth of South Holland’s infrastructure, hugely benefitting the economy of the area. “It is great that through this and our work through Welland Homes we are expanding housing provision for residents across the whole district.”

Lincolnshire’s oldest resident celebrates 111th Birthday at Ashwood Nursing Home, Spalding Much loved resident Violet Davies-Evans celebrates her 111th birthday at Ashwood Nursing & Care Home on Saturday 30th March in Spalding, Lincolnshire. Violet, Lincolnshire’s oldest resident and seventh oldest person in the UK celebrated with her family and staff at the care home. Staff and residents at the nursing home celebrated the milestone birthday with cake and flowers for Violet. Violet will be joined by members of her family who will travel from across the UK to spend the day with her. Born in Sutterton in 1908, the third child of what was to be a family of four sisters and a brother, Violet Davies-Evans was brought up in Spalding. After leaving school she started work at Pennington’s before moving to Birmingham as a beautician at Marshall and Snelgroves. In the thirties she moved to London to work for Elizabeth Arden as a beauty specialist advising many influential clients on how to make the best of themselves. Violet was married to Hubert in 1938 and, though they would have liked to have a family that was not to be. At the outbreak of war Elizabeth Arden, herself, offered her a job in America but she chose to stay in London. As well as her day job working as a PA to Christopher Hinton, (Baron Hinton of Bankside) in the Ministry of Supply she was regularly to be found fire-watching on the roofs of the capital. After the war Violet, her husband and two dogs moved to Oxfordshire where he became the very charismatic head of a school in a large hospital. They enjoyed a busy social life entertaining friends and she was able to demonstrate her wide range of cooking skills as well as the love her of antiques, painting and tapestry work. Sadly, soon after his retirement in 1975, her husband died and, having
too large a property to look after on her own, she moved back to Lincolnshire, sharing a house in Osbournby with her also widowed sister, May, and getting fully involved in village life including the WI.
After the death of her sister she moved back to Spalding where she has lived independently until 2014 when she decided that she needed more care and moved into Ashwood Nursing and Care Home.
All Things Georgian Tales from the Long Eighteenth Century Pen and Sword have released the 4th title by Lincoln authors Joanne Major & Sarah Murden. All Things Georgian: Tales from the Long Eighteenth Century features a collection of 25 carefully researched true short stories from around the country. Marvel at the Queen’s Ass, gaze at the celestial heavens through the eyes of the past andbe amazed
by the equestrian feats of the Norwich Nymph. Journey to the debauched French court at Versailles, travel to Covent Garden and take your seat in a box at the theatre and, afterwards, join the mile-high club in a new-fangled hot air balloon. Meet actresses, whores and high-born ladies, politicians,
inventors, royalty and criminals as we travel through the Georgian era in all its glorious and gruesome glory. In roughly chronological order, covering the reign of the four Georges, 1714-1730 and set within the framework of the main events of the era, these tales are accompanied by over 100 stunning colour illustrations.
Joanne Major and Sarah Murden are supersleuthing historians who enjoy bringing the Georgian era to life. Their lives were changed forever when they (metaphorically) met an eighteenth-century courtesan, and this is now their fourth book together. Along with their respective families, they live in Lincolnshire.

Spalding-Based Encore Champions Cancer Charity Encore Personnel has pledged its support to national children’s charity, Children with Cancer UK, setting a target to raise more than £20,000 over the next year for the amazing organisation. Giving back to local charities and communities has always been part of Encore’s code and culture. Each year, the agency – which currently operates from its office on New Road in Spalding – chooses a charity to support which is close to an employee’s heart or has had a direct impact on them or a close family member. This year, staff chose to raise monies for Children with Cancer UK. The charity provides support for children with cancer and their families. Funding research at centres of excellence across the country, the charity works to drive up cancer survival rates and ensure effective treatments are found. Ian Briers, Sales Director at Encore Personnel said: “I am delighted that we have chosen Children with Cancer UK as this year’s charity. The organisation provides a vital service to children and families, helping to combat this devastating disease. I have seen first-hand the excellent work they do and I know the difference they can make to people’s lives.” Ashleigh McCluskey, Children with Cancer UK Regional Fundraising Manager, said: “We are hugely thankful to Encore Personnel for choosing Children with Cancer UK as its charity of the year for 2019 and for pledging to raise £20,000. Our supporters help us make a real difference to children’s lives and we greatly appreciate Encore’s assistance in fighting childhood cancer and ensuring more children ring the end of treatment bell.” July will see Encore Personnel taking on the Peak District 50km Challenge. Encore employees will take to the Peaks and attempt to walk the
50km route in under 12 hours. If this wasn’t enough, Encore staff will be joining Ian and fellow Director Chris Hockey on a gruelling coast to coast challenge from Whitehaven to Tynemouth in September, which will total 166 miles over the course of three days. LIVES launches new unit to deliver CPR training in remote & rural Lincolnshire Lincolnshire charity LIVES has launched their new Mobile Education Unit to teach more people lifesaving CPR skills. The Mobile Education Unit, which was launched on Wednesday 10th April at Bakkavor in Boston, will be travelling the county to reach remote and rural villages and communities in Lincolnshire that don’t have a traditional venue or village hall to host events. The new unit is possible thanks to a generous grant which was awarded to LIVES from the People’s Postcode Lottery. Nikki Silver, CEO of LIVES, said: “We’re extremely grateful to the People’s Postcode Lottery for making this possible. Only 1 in 10 people survive an out-ofhospital cardiac arrest. The addition of the mobile education unit means that LIVES can now train more people in CPR so that we can try to improve this statistic.”

Nick’s Notes Worth Cllr Nick
A
Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages....
t the time of writing in early April, just after MPs voted on the second round of indicative votes on possible Brexit options, of which they said no to all 4 options, I had a conversation with my Postman who has a pretty good feel for the way local people are thinking. He told me that neither he nor his wife would probably ever vote again, MP’s had lost their trust, they were not representing the views of the people who elected them and to be honest, the UK Parliament has become a laughing stock. I don’t think this is an uncommon view and speaking to another local lady who described MP’s as a bunch of children throwing their toys out of the pram if they didn’t get what they, as individuals, wanted. She said they were only interested in themselves and not the national interest. It is a sad indictment of our democracy that in something as important as Brexit, MPs were at the time of writing, unable to find common ground for the national good. In this area in
8 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
particular there is a real sense of betrayal. Unfortunately it not only reflects badly on all MPs, who are now regarded as the most untrusted people in the country, but by default local councillors as well, who while all the shenanigans have been going on, have been getting on with the day job, solving issues, delivering local services and representing our local communities in South Holland. I have always been proud of the fact that at South Holland District Council, irrelevant of party politics, of which there is very little I am happy to say, as councillors we have worked together across the board to get the best outcomes for you our residents. Yes, we do disagree on occasions and we do in our own political groups as well, but we do unite on the big ticket items. As the District and Parish elections loom, (Election Day is Thursday, May 2nd ), there are a large number of well contested seats in our larger towns in particular, although a few such as mine in Holbeach Hurn is uncontested,
possibly reflecting the apathy nationally in the light of Brexit – that feeling of why bother, it won’t make any difference anyway? I only hope that that apathy doesn’t reflect in the voter turnout. Candidates in these elections are local people, who live and work among you, who are by their very nature, passionate about their local communities and want to make a difference. Local councils, whether District or Parish have a direct effect on your every day lives in the local services that they provide. You can have a direct say in that by voting for your favoured candidate and I would encourage people, not matter how turned off national politics you may be, to vote in these local elections – you will make a difference. Local government needs you to vote in these local elections. It is about local people, you know and who are locally accountable. .

Advice The Human Rights Act 1998 In the UK, human rights are protected by the Human Rights Act 1998. Only public authorities must follow the Human Rights Act. This means you can take action under the Human Rights Act if a public authority has breached your human rights. But you can’t take action against a private individual as they’re not covered by the Act. What’s a public authority under the Human Rights Act? The Human Rights Act says a public authority is an organisation which provides public functions. Here are examples of public authorities: • government departments • courts and tribunals • local authorities • police, prison and immigration officers • schools • ombudsmen • public prosecutors • NHS trusts and hospitals • other organisations which have been set up by the law like the Information Commissioner’s Office and the General Medical Council. • Private organisations and charities • Private organisations or charities are also public authorities if they carry out public functions. They must respect your human rights when they carry out their public functions. This could include - for example: • privatised utilities like water companies, British Gas and Network Rail • some companies who have been subcontracted to carry out a public function like a security company running a private prison • some housing associations when carrying out some of its functions as a social landlord • private care homes providing care on behalf of the local authority • private hospitals providing care on behalf of the NHS.
s U o t k l Ta
How do you know if an organisation is carrying out a public function? It’s the courts who decide if something is a public function as there’s no definition in the Human Rights Act. Generally speaking a public function is something that’s normally provided to the public by the state like education, prisons or health services. So if an organisation carries out one of these activities on behalf of the state they may be a public authority. But it’s not enough for a private organisation to carry out a public service for it to count as a public authority. The courts will look at a number of things to decide if a private organisation is a public authority. It will look at whether the organisation is: • publicly funded • supervised by a state regulatory body • exercising powers given to it by the law • taking the place of central or local government • providing a public service • acting in the public interest • carrying out coercive powers devolved from the state. When must a public authority follow the Human Rights Act? Public authorities which are also public sector organisations like NHS hospitals, the police or schools must follow the Human Rights Act in everything they do, even if it’s not a public function. This means they must also follow the Act when they do things of a private nature, like
What if your Convention rights have been breached by a private organisation or individual who’s not a public authority? The Human Rights Act says courts should consider human rights in all cases they hear. This is because they’re also public authorities and so must follow the Human Rights Act. All courts in the UK must apply the law in a way which is compatible with human rights. This means they must interpret and give effect to the law in a way which is as close to the Human Rights Act as possible. They must do this in all cases they hear even if they don’t involve a public authority.

Mini Police
Challenging Stereotypes ‘Boys don’t do that’. ‘Girls don’t play football’. These are two statements we hear all too often from children, adults and especially the media. When was the last time we saw reporting about the England Women’s Football team, or a men’s netball team? The simple answer is we don’t. Whilst the last twenty or thirty years has opened up opportunities for both men and women to do almost any job or role they wish, with a huge push to encourage people to aspire to anything they want to be, there are still stereotypes within our spoken language. ‘Policeman’ ‘Fireman’ and such words slip off the tongue all too easily, when in reality a ‘Police Officer’ or ‘Firefighter’ could be male or female. The Mini Police program has a topic written around this issue – Diversity and Stereotypes. This has been a popular topic this term, with over twenty of our schools selecting the topic. As gender stereotypes are defined between the ages of 5 and 7 (according to BBC Cbeebies), our lesson is written to explore and tackle stereotypes, pre-empt prejudice and help children
to recognise people as individuals. We want them to understand that stereotypes are not necessarily a problem as long as it doesn’t affect our attitudes and behaviours to others. We use a set of video clips showing six people, and challenge children to have a guess at the occupations, hobbies and favourite colours of our speakers based solely on their appearance. We have a pre-school worker, hairdresser and racing driver amongst our speakers, and to date, having delivered this project to hundreds of children, only one occupation has been correctly guessed. We also ask children to tell us which boys and girls like best, what they want for their birthdays, what they get told off for at school, what jobs they want when they grow up, what are their hobbies and favourite colours. We then challenge these, encouraging debate to encourage understanding that there is no right or wrong answer, and that anyone can achieve anything they want to achieve. Children are given ‘gender rules’ such as ’be sensible’,
‘be daring’ and ‘love sport’ and asked whether these apply to boys, girls or both. Whichever way they answer, they are encouraged to apply reasoning to their answer. This promotes healthy debate, and encourages children not to accept these rules as correct, recognising that they apply to both boys and girls. We discuss prejudice, and encourage children to debate whether it is right or wrong. We finish our session with a question which is ‘What have you learnt?’ Whilst we as an
adult society have become more open to equality, and we are told to not be afraid to stand up and challenge stereotypes and prejudice, it is clear that nurture itself often brings subconscious prejudice and stereotyping, so the next time you hear a person say ‘Fireman’ or ‘That’s a girls’ job’, don’t be afraid to challenge those statements, as there is no such thing as a ‘Fireman’ and there are no ‘Girl’s jobs’.

Wisbech Grammar School Wisbech Grammar School are proud and delighted to be one of the first Independent schools in the Country to have gained the prestigious School Mental Health Award. Wisbech Grammar School are proud and delighted to be one of the first Independent schools in the Country to have gained the prestigious School Mental Health Award. The school met the strict criteria demanded to achieve the Award, established in 2017 by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools - part of Leeds Beckett University - and social enterprise Minds Ahead. The Centre was set up to help boost wellbeing at all levels of the UK education system. The Award aims to strengthen pupils’ mental health by supporting schools to make a positive change, improving students’ outcomes and life chances. Across the sector Teachers are seeing rising numbers of young people in need of mental health support as the pressures of exam stress and social media take their toll. A crisis in young people’s mental health means teaching staff are being trained to spot the signs of emotional problems in youngsters. Latest NHS figures and research found that: • One in eight under 19s in England has some form of mental health issue. • At age 14, some 22 per cent of girls and nine per cent of boys have self-harmed. • More than 23 per cent of young women aged 17-19 had a mental health disorder, twice the rate of young men. • The young people’s charity Childline said it delivered 3,135 counselling sessions on exam stress in 2016-17 – a rise of 11 per cent in two years. The schools journey to gaining
the accolade has led them to review practice and policies at all levels, from Leadership, culture, internal and external support for pupils and staff to working with parents and external services. It has allowed them to put support in place well before most schools, impacting pupils and staff while the government is still formulating legislation. The School Mental Health Award lead talks of “WGS being a very caring school that caters for the individual where all pupils are well known by the staff. There are strong pastoral systems, small tutor groups, and a large pastoral team. The level of training of adults in the school relating to mental health is high and a priority for all. Regular assemblies which focus on mental health take place and pupils lead these as appropriate. People voice has increased in mental health and it is a standing item on the pupil forum. Parents’ feedback and leaders in the school have used parental voice to help inform planning and provision. Parent sessions have been offered on a range of topics including a recent “authoritative parenting” session which was very well attended. The school has used the framework and content of the Award to very good effect to develop their mental health and wellbeing strategies, structures and practices.

Holbeach Primary Academy & Holbeach Bank Academy We are keen to share the news from both our busy academies. The Spring term is coming to an end and we have had a hard working and fun time with lots of different activities going on in both academies - Police visits, World Book Day, Red Nose Day and sporting events and on our return for the Summer term there is lots more to look forward to. As you read this, if you are hoping your child has secured a place at either of our academies we are very much looking forward to working with you and your child and will be in touch after you have received confirmation. Following on from Holbeach Primary Academy’s success last year in Holbeach In Bloom and thanks to the hard work and dedication of the staff and children and we secured a Bronze award - we are aiming for a Gold standard this year!! As well as our individual entry in the Schools category we also worked alongside the Holbeach in Bloom team and helped them to secure a Gold award last year. Our entry this year is to build a pond which will be separated so as to have a wildlife teaching pond and an area for the ducks and will be enclosed by a fence in the interests of safety. We need volunteers to help with this so please contact us if you would like to help with this project, it would be wonderful to see staff, children, parents and the community working together. If you can help in any way,
please get in touch. Holbeach Bank Academy, like all small schools works on a limited budget. We are seeking to further increase our capacity to use our academy hall, welcoming increasing numbers of visitors to events in school and also those arranged by our newly formed and successful PTFA. We are seeking volunteers to help us and if you can offer help, please contact us via the office. Both Holbeach Primary and Holbech Bank Academy are busy planning their Summer Fayres. There will be lots of different stalls including balloon pop, hoopla, tombola, craft stalls, bouncy castles, a BBQ and a raffle. If anyone is able to donate any prizes for the tombola, hoopla or raffle it would be greatly appreciated. We always welcome old friends and new to this in addition to our current families. We are still actively involved in a range of sporting initiatives which provides experiences of both traditional sports and new events such as archery, speed stacks, Kho Kho and Danish Longball. As well as taking part in Enrichment Days we have also taken part in competitions in archery and speed stacks. Holbeach Bank Academy’s Year Group 2-5 came a very impressive 2nd in the archery competition winning Silver medals and Holbeach Primary Academy’s Year Group 2-5 finished 4th, just missing out on medals. Well done to them all!
GHA Achieves Commendation from the National Autistic Society! Gosberton House Academy are thrilled to announce that they have achieved the Autism Accreditation Enhanced Practice Commendation from the National Autistic Society! The Commendation Panel carefully considered the work undertaken by GHA, specifically that of supporting and mentoring other provisions as commendable. The Panel listed examples of the work undertaken to meet the criteria, such as a proactive approach when upskilling and supporting others. They mentioned that GHA had created an autism-friendly environment with an excellent multi-disciplinary approach and that positive feedback was being obtained from various external sources on a regular basis. Enhanced practice commendations are only awarded to the select services where it is felt that the provision is going above and beyond usual expectations in supporting autistic people, and exceeding the Autism Accreditation criteria in a particular area. Well done to everyone who has helped us to achieve this!

Foster Care Fortnight 13–26 May 2019 Foster Care Fortnight™ is The Fostering Network’s annual campaign to raise the profile of fostering and to show how foster care transforms lives. It is also the UK’s biggest foster carer recruitment campaign. Foster Care Fortnight 2018 took place from 14 to 27 May Foster Care Fortnight™ is the UK’s biggest foster care awareness raising campaign, delivered by leading fostering charity, The Fostering Network. Established for almost 20 years, the campaign showcases the commitment, passion and dedication of foster carers. It also supports fostering services to highlight the need for more foster carers. Thousands of new foster families are needed every year to care for children, with the greatest need being for foster carers for older children, sibling groups, disabled children and unaccompanied asylum seeking children. Who can foster? Foster carers come from all backgrounds and bring a wide range of life and work experiences. They receive training and support to help them develop the skills to meet the needs of children in care. Just as there is diversity in fostered children, foster carers need to come from a variety of backgrounds and have different life experiences, skills and qualities to help meet the needs of children and young people in foster care. There are, however, some common criteria that most fostering services need from you: • to be at least 21 years-old (although by law you can apply to foster from 18) • to have a spare bedroom big enough for a young person to live in • to be a full-time resident in the UK or have leave to remain • to be able to give the time to care for a child or young person, often on a full-time basis. Other factors to consider Other factors which will be taken into account will include: • Your health – are you fit and able to foster for now and the foreseeable future?
• Your financial security – can you afford to foster? • Your home – is it safe for a child or young person? • Your friends and family – are there people who can support you to foster? • Your past – whether you have lived abroad and any previous convictions. • Your experience with children and young people – through family, work, or volunteering. Crucially, any fostering service will want to know more about you. Do you want to work with children and young people who have often had difficult starts in life? Do you have the ability to support them, nurture them, communicate with them, advocate on their behalf and include them as part of your family? Are you willing to work as part of a team, develop your skills and qualities through training and learning and have the resilience to stay strong in times of difficulty? Challenging myths People often rule themselves out of fostering, buying into the many myths. Here are a few ‘MythBusters’: • You can be single and foster – but you will need to demonstrate a network of support. • You don’t have to own your own home – but you will need to demonstrate stability. • Your sexual orientation won’t prevent you from fostering.
16 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
• Your religion won’t prevent you from fostering – but you will need to demonstrate how you can support a child of a different religion from yours or questioning their own faith. • You don’t need any formal qualifications – you will be trained to help you develop the skills to foster and be supported to achieve the training and development standards in England. • You can sometimes continue to
work and foster, depending on the type of fostering you want to do and the needs of the children you will be caring for. There is also no upper age limit to foster; some people foster well into their 70s. What matters is that you are fit and able to care for any child you are approved to foster. Being a foster carer is not easy, but can make a huge difference to the lives of the children who need it.
If you are considering fostering or would like more information please visit www.thefosteringnetwork.org.uk

he sun is on my back, and a bracing Lincolnshire breeze is ruffling my fur and blowing through the rushes and reeds. There’s not a soul in sight, and the lush green grass is as long as my legs and tickles my tummy. I’m at the beautiful Willow Tree Fen nature reserve between Spalding and Baston. And I’m excited! It is so peaceful that a bee buzzing by startles my human and I. It’s no exaggeration to say we can see for miles. It’s just the two of us alone with our thoughts and sniffs. We hear gulls gently cawing and geese honking softly to each other. I’m not sure what they’re saying, but I’d guess they’re hooting about how happy they are here. Me too, my feathered friends. I’m fascinated by a
perfectly-placed pond - the sun makes it sparkle and the sound of the water gently lapping up the side is divine. We stroll alongside a rippling stream so clear I can see the bottom. I stop to give some

It’s noisy too.’ ‘It will be, buddy,’ my human sighs, ‘it’s a plane.’ Right. We wander steadily back to our car and I notice my human looks sad. ‘What’s up?’ I wag. She doesn’t want to leave! I can see why. It’s so tranquil here that the busy, bustling world seems far away. L
ast week was annual dental appointments for the VM family, so as I sat dutifully in the waiting room for our turn, I mindlessly flicked through the magazines to kill a few minutes before we went in. Most of the articles were the usual mindless dross, but one particular article caught my attention. “Self Care” the title read, “5 ways to self improvement”. Self care is absolutely something I am short of at the minute – everyone else still seems to make it further up the priority list than me, so I read on with the hope the article would be the start of a new, more cared for me. Essentially, the 5 points were to get a facial, have a spa weekend, go out for lunch, drink more water and turn my phone off. Now, as a (relatively) new mum there is absolutely no way that the majority of those are happening, but the more I thought about it, the more superficial and silly those suggestions sounded. What about being kind to yourself, forgiving yourself, working hard for positive mental health, cancelling that lunch so you can rest physically and mentally? As women we’re fighting a range of visible and invisible battles every single day. Against ourselves, for ourselves and everything in between. We’re taught to put ourselves last, to hate every part of ourselves while simultaneously told that we’re worth it (in the name of spending money to fix our ‘flaws’) and repeatedly told we can have everything and do everything but are met with
criticism no matter what we choose. The #selfcare trend leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. It’s simplistic and reductive. As women we’re now not only faced with the pressure to have it all and do it all, (while looking effortless), but to take time for ourselves in a way that looks beautiful, convinces others that we have the perfect life and to keep ourselves together all the time. Self care is not the revolutionary act it claims to be, but rather another way women are made to conform. To borrow the words from a dear friend - buying a new gorgeous mug and expensive tea, brewing a cup of tea in said gorgeous mug and putting together in a flat lay of candles, notebooks and pens to photograph on Instagram to show people you’re having a #selfcaresunday is not selfcare. Real self care is indeed revolutionary – keeping your unique and beautiful light lit in a world that seeks to dim your brightness, standing up for yourself and your beliefs, knowing that life isn’t all unicorns and glitter but that’s OK. It’s about our survival as women and the courage to be yourself in a world that constantly reminds you that you should be something else. Audre Lorde said, “caring for myself is not self indulgence, it is self preservation and that is an act of political warfare”

Honeypot Day Nursery & Pre-school
J
ust over 10 years ago, the local authority built a new school building for Weston Hills C of E Primary School and little did I know that when leaving the old school, my passing comment of ‘This building would make a good nursery and preschool’ would result in actually doing it. There have been up and downs along the way, but many more ‘ups’ than ‘downs! After a protracted purchase period, we finally owned the building and, with 4 members of staff and eight children, opened our doors in April 2008. Honeypot Day Nursery and Pre-school now has approximately 75 under 5’s on roll, together with 47 school children who attend various out of school sessions and 16 members of staff. As parents ourselves, we recognise the importance of providing high quality, affordable childcare in a local community. Our primary aims are: • To provide the highest quality standards in care and development through the creation of a warm, caring and stimulating environment. • To provide the best opportunity for each child to develop socially, physically, emotionally and educationally at their own rate as individuals. • To maintain close working relationships with parents, ensuring we work in partnership with the child’s best interests at the heart of everything we do. • To ensure children leave Honeypot with the necessary skills for the next step in their life as they start school. • For everyone to feel happy, safe and valued. We recognise that sending a child to Honeypot is usually the child’s first experience of care and education outside of the home and we aim to make it a happy and memorable one. We maintain records of every child’s achievements at the nursery, which are available for parents to access on-line with many, many pictures. Parents can contribute to this record and it therefore develops into a learning journey covering the whole period the child is with us, for parents to keep when the child leaves. Our staff are well qualified with a variety of qualifications from EYPS to Level
3. We usually take apprentices who will all be working towards achieving a level 3 qualification. We feel passionate about our role and expect high standards from each and every one of our team. The staff team is fabulous and many staff are also parents themselves. Children need to play, and we plan learning opportunities that are both fun and stimulating, aiming to develop enquiring minds. Children enjoy a variety of activities, both indoors and out – in all weathers! They may come home with works of art for the fridge, a beautiful building (from cardboard boxes) or cakes. Sometimes they come home with nothing, but they will have had a great time and developed new skills from the things they have done. We have a lot of singing and movement and during the summer we encourage parents to join us for ‘sports day’ – I use the term loosely! We have trips out, Christmas parties, visitors in (police, reptiles, ceramic painting) graduations, leavers and parents’ parties. Honeypot Day Nursery takes funded
children from 2 years old, where parents meet government set criteria. All 3 and 4 year old children can receive funded care for up to 15 hours per week during the school term (or a lower number stretched over the year) from the term after they turn 3. From September 2017, 3 and 4 year olds with working parents, may be entitled to receive a further 15 hours per week – taking the total to 30. We are happy to show you around our nursery, and talk to you about your childcare needs. For more information call: 01406 380803, email: office@ honeypotdaynursery.com or see our website www.honeypotdaynursery.com

Grin with Confidence During National Smile Month 2019
N
ational Smile Month is a long running and high profile campaign that is held throughout the United Kingdom to raise awareness of the importance of good oral hygiene. National Smile Month 2019 is set to run from May 13th until June 13th and a large number of individuals and organisations will be setting up events to spread the message of the need to pay attention to oral hygiene to maintain a bright and white smile. National Smile Month is primarily organised by the Oral Health Foundation with the aim of helping to improve the oral health of millions of people throughout the United Kingdom. During this month long campaign special events will be organised in schools throughout the United Kingdom to help children to establish healthy oral habits. There are three key messages of National Smile Month, with the first one being that it is essential to brush your teeth at night and at least once during the day using fluoride toothpaste. It is also recommended to visit your dentist regularly and cut the consumption of sugary drinks and foods to an absolute minimum. Shocking research has revealed that nearly a third (31%) of 5-year-olds and nearly half (46%) of 8-year-olds in the UK have obvious tooth decay in their primary teeth. Also, it was found that, sadly, 35% of 12-year-old children are too embarrassed to smile or laugh
due to tooth decay or missing teeth. These dental health issues come down to many factors, including poor oral care habits and nutrition. However, with the right support, they’re mostly preventable. During National Smile Month [14th May 14th June], campaign sponsor, Oral-B is on a mission to help UK parents adopt appropriate home-based oral health behaviours and thereby reduce the number of children with toothache and dental problems – all through its #StrongTeethMakeStrongKids campaign. Oral-B’s “Strong Teeth Make Strong Kids” programme aims to educate and support parents on how they can help their children develop the right habits, as well as lay down a strong foundation for good oral health, for a healthy and confident smile for life. “We are working closely with the UK’s Dental Professionals by aiming to provide up to 20,000 dental professionals this year with simple and engaging educational materials for parents and their children during routine check-ups. “Oral-B is committed to take on this challenge to sustainably improve the situation in the UK”, says Alessio Martini, Brand Manager for Oral-B in the UK. Combined with the right dental care products, these positive oral health messages are designed to encourage parents to lead the way, so they can see that these oral health issues are mostly preventable with simple
changes to their families’ daily oral care routine. How should I clean my child’s teeth? Cleaning your child’s teeth should be part of their daily hygiene routine. You may find it easier to stand or sit behind your child, cradling their chin in your hand so you can reach their top and bottom teeth more easily. • When the first teeth start to appear, try using a toothbrush designed for children, with a small smear of fluoride toothpaste. • It is important to supervise your child’s brushing until they are at least seven. • Once all the teeth have appeared, use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles in small, circular movements and try to concentrate on one section at a time. • Don’t forget to brush gently behind the teeth and onto the gums. • Spit out after brushing and do not rinse, so that the fluoride stays on your teeth longer. • If possible, make brushing a routine - just before your child goes to bed and at least one other time during the day. • Remember to encourage your child, as praise will often get results! During National Smile Month, The Oral Health Foundation embarks upon a nationwide search to find special individuals, from all areas of the United Kingdom, who deserve recognition for their impact in the community. It is your opportunity to let us know about an unsung hero in your life who always manages to raise a smile on your face. Whether it is a family member, friend, colleague, patient – we want to know about anybody who you feel deserves some recognition and appreciation for being that extra bit special. How to nominate Send a picture of your chosen nominee along with a brief description of why they deserves to be one of the faces of National Smile Month 2019. We want to see a natural smile (no smileys please), send your entries to us at pr@dentalhealth.org Or share your smile with us on Twitter and Facebook using #NominateASmile.

Dying Matters Awareness Week 2019 runs May 13-19
For the last couple of years, Dying Matters Awareness Week has challenged us all to answer a question: What Can You Do? How can we help ourselves, or families and our communities face up to death and bereavement?
F
or 2019, we will ask another question: Are We Ready? It’s a question that challenges each of us on several levels. Are We Ready for our own deaths, or the deaths of those we care about? This is a practical question – wills, funeral planning and more – but of course it’s also emotional, even spiritual for some of us. For many of us, the answer will not be ‘yes’. We know from the research we’ve done that most
people haven’t taken care of the practical aspects, which include deciding on organ donation, and planning our future care. And even for those that have, the emotional aspect of being ready for death is challenging. Who is ever really ready to die? Such questions are best faced with the help of others, which is why we’re asking ‘Are We Ready?’ To face death and dying is a challenge greater than any one of us can face alone, and it is
all of our responsibility. We’re in this life together, so our question is asking much more of us than you might think. • Are We Ready to help others get their affairs in order? • Are We Ready to help people we know who are caring for someone who is dying? • Are We Ready to support someone who is grieving? • Or even something as simple as “Are We Ready to talk about it?”
We can only know the answer if we start to have the conversation, and as we’ve said before, talking about it won’t make it happen. And those conversations don’t stop in our private lives – they have to form a part of the public debate as well. Are We Ready to volunteer at a local hospice? Are We Ready to support a bereavement charity? Are We Ready to do what we can in our communities to help people be ready?

POP ALONG to our Dying Matters events 13th – 17th May
How to open up difficult conversations People who are dying usually know what is happening to them. Nevertheless, when a dying person believes relatives and friends can’t cope with the truth, it can be hard for them to talk about what they’re experiencing or ask for what they want or need. This can leave them feeling isolated and lonely, not knowing how to reach out or say goodbye.
So, how can a meaningful conversation happen? A dying person might sometimes help indirectly by throwing out ‘tester questions’ to check if you are willing to engage with them. They might, for example, ask you, ‘What do you think happens to you after you die?’ They might ask if you think there is life after death. They might ask, ‘Do you think God really exists?’. On the other hand, you

yourself may want to broach the subject of death with your relative or friend, but don’t quite know how, especially if death has never been mentioned before. One of the easiest ways of opening up the subject is to ask your relative or friend who they would like you to contact if they became very seriously ill. This conveys that you know they may not recover and are willing to talk about it. It also gives them the space to decide whether or not to respond. If you don’t feel quite ready to have this kind of conversation and you’re in a hospital, hospice or care home setting, talk with the nursing staff so they can offer appropriate support. The most important gift you can give to a dying person is to listen. Don’t fear tears: it’s okay to cry; crying is a natural response to emotionally charged situations. Being brave enough to express your grief can have a powerful healing effect on your relationship, as well as
giving your relative or friend permission to grieve for the life he or she is leaving behind. And

Dying Matters Awareness Week
What’s on your bucket list? A bucket list is a great way to single out once-in-a-lifetime things to do, from adventurous acts to simpler things such as revisiting a favourite place.
W
e might start such a list before a milestone age or keep one as a reminder to live in the moment. Sometimes, it’s also a way to face an inevitable part of our lives – death. It’s a tough subject and affects people differently. Some might feel reluctant to plan for it. Others may be unsure of loved ones’ wishes or their administrative affairs. Dying Matters awareness week from 13th to 19th May is a national campaign which tries to help people talk about it. And to support this, at Lincolnshire Co-op we’re holding a series of drop-in events in our communities. Our colleagues will get the conversation started by inviting people to add their bucket list ideas to a blackboard. And if you’ve any questions about planning ahead or want to mull over future funeral wishes there’ll be help on hand from them too. Whether there’s a song that makes you smile, a type of transport that’s you all over or you’d like to put the environment first with an eco-coffin, there are many personal touches to go for. And by recording your wishes through a Lincolnshire Co-op funeral plan, you’ll give loved ones less to handle when the time comes. It’s also a good way to give family peace of mind by paying in advance. Instead of insurance policies and over 50s plans - which may not cover the average cost of a funeral – our Lincolnshire Co-op funeral plan ensures that whenever you come to use it, the full cost is covered if the requirements haven’t changed. A funeral plan with us starts from £2,795 including a £200 member discount voucher* when you attend one of our drop-in events at Spalding Market on Tuesday 14th May from 9.30am-3pm, our Holbeach Post Office on Fleet Street between 10am and midday on Thursday 16th May and our Long Sutton Food
Store on West Street on Friday 17th May between 10am and midday. There’ll also be fundraising for
the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, one of our current Community Champions.
For advice at any time, simply call our Spalding Funeral Home on 01775 723 199, our Holbeach Funeral Home 01406 422 333 or our Long Sutton Funeral Home on 01406 363 648 or visit during opening hours. You can also find out more here: www.lincolnshire.coop/dyingmatters * If you are a member and pay in full for your funeral plan with this voucher you will receive £200 discount. If you pay in instalments, you will receive £200 dividend on your card upon receipt of your final payment. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 27

Holbeach Town Band
T
he band offers structured learning and theory classes with a 100% pass rate in the ABRSM grade exams. All learners are encouraged to progress into the Victoria Training band before promotion into the Senior Band Brass bands date back to the middle of the 19th Century. They were particularly popular in mining and industrial areas and were often sponsored by the owners. In the early days of brass bands, it was not unusual to see woodwind instruments in a band. These days there is a standard line-up of brass instruments – cornets, flugel horn, tenor horns, baritone horns, euphoniums, trombones, tubas and percussion. There is evidence of a brass band in Holbeach from the early to middle 20th Century called the Holbeach Victoria Band. Holbeach Town Band (formerly Holbeach Community Band) was founded by the late Brian Long, a local brass player and the bands original conductor. With a grant of £50 from Holbeach Parish Council and a bank loan of £250 the band bought its first 12 instruments and 15 uniforms from the former Thetford Band. Mel Hopkin was appointed musical director of the band in 1997. He recognised a shortfall in providing training in musical instruments in schools. As a result the band developed a structured learning programme which is run solely by volunteers. It has a learner group for absolute beginners followed by the Victoria Training Band. Once the required standard is achieved players are then promoted to the Senior Band. There are also theory classes and individual lessons with the opportunity of sitting music grade exams. There is no age restriction. In addition, the band offers open days and visits to local schools where instruments are demonstrated and the children are given the chance to play a variety of instruments. In August the band has its annual Learn to Play Week. Members of the public are encouraged to visit. Membership of the Band is open to all brass band players and those wishing to learn. There is a membership fee of just £1 per week (50p to those still at school and FREE for the Learner Group). The Band provides instruments and uniforms for its members and extra training where it is needed. The Senior Band rehearses on Wednesday evenings throughout the year from 7.30pm to 9.30pm and welcomes visits from guest players. The Training Band meets from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings. Over the years, the Band has had tremendous support from the Holbeach Parish Council. In approx. 1978 the Council bought the former Jehovah’s Witness Hall in Back Lane, Holbeach
28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
for use by the band. They let it to the Band for a minimal rent. Having exclusive use of the bandroom is an excellent resource as it gives the band the flexibility to run its band practices and various learning groups and individual classes throughout the week. Unfortunately the Council have decided not to renew the Band’s Lease when it expires next spring. The band is now desperately seeking new premises. To ensure the bands future and continued development it is essential that the band has its own premises. Not only will it provide secure storage for instruments, music and equipment,
it will offer an ideal base to continue to invest in the children of our community. A number of local organisations have offered to share a room, at a market rent, but the band’s ability to offer training sessions would be severely restricted and there will be no storage facilities. Without the ability to train new musicians, the future of the band looks gloomy! For further information about the Band contact the band’s Musical Director, Mel Hopkin on 01775 712420. Email him at mel@ holbeachtownband.org.uk or visit the band’s website www.holbeachtownband.org.uk.

Food Matters Best Meat Cuts For Your Bank Holiday Bbq: Sirloin, Pork Neck Fillets, Dry Age Rib-Eye And More! Fingers crossed the sun is going to make a badly wanted appearance over the upcoming Bank Holidays, so waste no time, take your BBQ out of the shed, give it a good clean and enjoy the long weekend. We have tips for the best grilling experience! When it comes to feeding hungry crowds on a hot day, serving up flame-loved meats is a must. And while the British barbecue is not always a fancy feast, after a long winter like the one we just had, it’s worth putting out some special cuts to celebrate! From pork neck fillets to dry age beef, here’s how to make the most of your chosen cut of meat. Best For Grill Striploin, rib-eye, fillet steaks and yes, our everpopular homemade speciality sausages are the top picks because they’re affordable, easy to barbecue and are packed with flavour. However, cuts such as flank and rump are as tasty, cook quicker and are great budget-friendly options if you are entertaining a crowd. To maximise flavour and succulence, try grilling your meat on the bone, especially T-bone or sirloin on the bone. Why? Because the bone helps the flesh retain moisture and texture. For something extra special why not consider a thick rib-eye on the bone. Dry Age Dry ageing allows beef to age for up to six weeks in a cool room, exposed directly to the air, so the natural enzymes in the meat allow it to tenderise, darken and shrink, forming a crust that when trimmed, expose a rich red meat inside. For best results with dry age beef on the grill, go for a nice fat cut about two to three centimetres thick, and to appreciate the full flavour profile, aim for medium-rare, seasoning with just rock salt and pepper. But whatever you do, don’t leave it on the BBQ for too long, the ageing extracts some of the moisture, so dry-aged meat cooks quicker than other cuts.
34 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
Temperature Tips To make the most of your cut of meat, make sure your barbecue is “super hot and super clean” before cooking, even if it means you have to turn down the heat when grilling begins. It’s also crucial to let meat warm to room temperature before you start cooking it “this relaxes the flesh and allows it to cook more evenly so you have a more tender and juicier meat and less chance of overcooking or drying out the steaks. Once barbecuing begins, let the meat colour but only to the point when a little juice or blood still comes through when gently pressed. Flip once and let the other side colour, then lift the meat off the heat while it’s still pink in the middle and rest it on a plate, where it will keep cooking as it cools.
You don’t have to keep touching and flipping it, just let it be – but don’t forget about it! Go Slow But if you fancy trying something really different, how about a beef brisket, beef cheeks or beef short ribs – that you can leave braising in red wine overnight? You can also try pork neck fillet, chops, ribs or diced shoulder of pork, marinated overnight using simple ingredients such as good quality olive oil, garlic and herbs. Either for the beef or the pork, after marinating, cover with foil in a baking tray or pot, then cook in the oven at low temperature (80ºC to 100ºC max) for 12 hours. The result is an incredibly juicy fall-apart meat, great for a pulled beef or pork sandwiches.

Home & Property
Should you Move or Improve? How Much Does a House Extension Cost? How much does a house extension cost? We get asked this question a lot, so, we thought it worthy of its own article! It’s not an easy question to answer and obviously depends on a number of factors, but that’s not the answer you’re looking for is it? You’re really looking for a very rough figure, a general guideline, a starting point. OK, I’ll try my best. Let’s start with a basic single storey extension say 4m x 5m You may have heard that the rule of thumb is £1,000 per m2. However, this figure has been bandied about for rather a long time now! From experience, £1,200 – £1,500 per m2 is a now a more realistic estimate for a house extension cost in 2015 and reflects price increases over the last few years. So, for your 4 x 5m extension, the build cost at the lowest end of these estimates would be roughly £24,000 + Add on 10-15% for professional fees (architect, planning application, building regs, structural engineer) + VAT Single storey extension = £32,000 How about a double storey extension, same footprint? As a rule of thumb you can add 50% extra to the build cost of a single storey extension. So, £24,000 +50% = £36,000 + Add on 10-15% for professional fees (architect, planning application, building regs, structural engineer) + VAT Double Storey Extension = £48,000 The above figures would apply to a typical, uncomplicated extension. Sound like a lot? Think about the costs of ‘moving up’ the housing ladder… Selling an average 3 bed home at £175,000 would cost: Estate agent fees – 1% + vat = £2100
36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
Solicitor Fees for buying and selling, plus associated costs - £2500 approx Stamp Duty on house purchase of £240,000* £2,300 Removals - £750 approx Difference between sale and purchase price* £65,000 Cost of Move = £72,650 *Purchase of an average 4 bed house at £240,000
You will always need to weigh up if you are adding an extension for your family to enjoy, to add value or both. If you are looking to move in the next 2-5 years and hope to recoup your outlay then you must keep a close watch on your budget! Moving may give you the opportunity to move to a new area, increase your outside space as well as the house space. You need to make the right decision for you and your family.

hey pride themselves on their high levels of service, offering windows and doors, composite doors, conservatories, fascias, soffits, guttering and rubberised flat roofs. They are also FENSA registered for your peace of mind. FENSA stands for the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme. Following Government encouragement, FENSA has been set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and other industry bodies in response to Building Regulations for double glazing companies in England and Wales. When replacing windows, doors and roof lights in dwellings in England and Wales, homeowners must comply with current thermal performance and Building Regulation standards and ensure they get a certificate from a Competent Person scheme such as FENSA or Local Authority Building Control. FENSA enables companies that install replacement windows and doors to self-certify compliance under these Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control.
All of S & J’s products are ‘A rated’ so it reduces your heating bills as well as your carbon footprint! If you are considering a change from old windows you will also find that the time you spend on maintenance dramatically decreases! All jobs come with a ten year insurance backed guarantee for your peace of mind. No job is too big or too small and S & J are as happy replacing windows at a huge commercial unit as they are changing a single window at a home. If you are thinking about having some work done then the best place to start is by making the call to discuss
your requirements. S & J offer free surveys and estimates – they are more than happy to come to your home, measure up and give you the benefit of their years of experience to make recommendations to ensure you achieve outstanding results. They have their own, fully qualified fitters so you can be assured of a quality installation. The whole process from start to finish takes very little time – the usual turnaround time can be around four weeks. Finance options available for 2018. New Kia e-Niro Check out the new Kia e-Niro. The Korean automaker has ushered this car into the automotive arena in the hope of putting to rest the reservations of electric-car naysayers. The cynics tend to think that vehicles without combustion engines don’t have the range or the performance of ‘regular’ cars – and they always slam the price. Well, after having a first drive of the e-Niro in South Korea I’m pleased to report that Kia will probably turn these disbelievers into believers. Why? Well, the e-Niro is more credible than any electric car to date, including Hyundai’s mechanically related Kona Electric. While the two vehicles have similar powertrains and platforms, the Kia houses its ingenious technology in a more traditionally-designed and more down-to-earth bundle.
dashboard is bland yet functional, there’s an ultramodern infotainment system, and importantly, there’s space for five-up. The most obvious difference, though, is within the centre console. The usual gear selector has been replaced with a rotary dial. This little change in details unfurls some additional storage room, too. The e-Niro’s 451-litre boot is larger than the ubiquitous Nissan Qashqai’s, but it’s less than the 510-litres in the Seat Ateca. Mind you, it’s still a good size, and you can store the charging cables under the load floor. At the time of writing, there’s just one trim level
At the end of the day, the all-new e-Niro is a no-nonsense five-door family crossover that makes electric car ownership more appealing than ever. The pure-electric e-Niro looks almost the same as its plug-in and hybrid bedfellows, although there are some restrained alterations. Look intently, and you’ll spot the sleeker front bumper, a fared-in grille and 17-inch alloys. The rear of the Kia wears a modified trim to complement the nose, too, helping to provide a more slippery shape. Inside, the car is like other Kia Niros. The
to select – and it’s called the First Edition. Okay, it’s not very original, but who cares when you get a car as well kitted-out as this? The e-Niro in this guise comes with a reversing camera, heated leather seats, lane keep assist and forward collision warning. The Kia doesn’t possess LED headlights, though – and that’s a shame. So, yes, the e-Niro is all very orthodox; that is until
you examine the powertrain. The Kia gets a 204ps motor that propels the front wheels. This, as well as the 64kWh battery pack, is used in Hyundai’s Kona Electric. However, unlike the Kona, a 136ps, 39kWh variant won’t be sold in the UK. The motor’s power output boosts the Kia e-Niro’s athleticism well above the current plug-in and hybrid Niro models. What’s more, once the substantial surge of torque is taken into consideration, the car feels livelier than many ‘warm’ family-hatchbacks. There’s even enough grunt to get a squeal from the front tyres, as I found out when putting my foot down to escape Seoul’s traffic. There are a couple of paddles behind the e-Niro’s steering wheel to regulate the force of brake regeneration. And, while you can’t drive the Kia with one pedal as you can in Nissan’s Leaf, the trio of levels allows you to make the most of the e-Niro’s charge. What about the all-important range then? Well, Kia claims that the e-Niro can manage 282 miles on one charge. More impressively, the official figure is higher when driving around town. That means many e-Niro drivers will only need to charge up once a week - at the most. Granted, the topping up process isn’t as straightforward as a quick fill up at the pumps, but

Tel: 01775 720363 Unit 1 13a Kellett Gate, Low Fulney, Spalding connect the Kia to a 100kW quick charger and less than an hour later (54 minutes) you’ll have charged the battery pack from next to nothing to 80 per cent. That’s enough energy for the e-Niro to cover between 226 and nearly 300 miles, depending on how you drive it. So, how much does this new all-electric car cost? Well, at £32,995 (after the £3,500 Government grant), the Kia e-Niro will only set you back around

£1000 or so more than the flagship Nissan Qashqai. There are very few drawbacks with this e-Niro. Okay, it can understeer a bit due to the weighty battery-pack, but then this pack gives the Kia a low centre of gravity. So, no, there really aren’t any significant gripes from me. At the end of the day, the all-new e-Niro is a no-nonsense five-door family crossover that makes electric car ownership more appealing than ever.
