I

Welcome to the November issue

t’s been a busy month for us at home, we have had quite a bit of work going on in the house, we’ve had two weddings to go to (including one in the office congratulations Sarah & Mark), my birthday, half term and a few days away with friends at Peppa Pig World. I am hoping November is going to be a quieter month in all honesty! In this issue we are starting to think about darker nights and home security options as well as some yummy winter warmers from Laura in food & drink. With dark nights, frosty mornings and more rain it’s important to make sure your car is in tip-top condition. We also look at what Donington has to offer, Tim test drives the Toyota Camry and Otis is already dreaming up his Christmas list. Well, for now, all that’s left for me to say is enjoy the month and see you next time!

If you have news to share with the residents of South Holland then please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk Care Team At Beech Lodge Care Home Shortlisted For Prestigious National Award Country Court Care is delighted to announce that the care team at Beech Lodge Nursing Home in Holbeach St John’s has been shortlisted for a prestigious national award. The Caring UK Awards are now in their third year and the home has beaten off competition from hundreds of others across the UK to be shortlisted in the Dementia Team of the year category. The nursing team at Beech Lodge have been nominated for their remarkable patience and understanding when caring for residents living with dementia. They also found that some families

have limited understanding of dementia, making it a difficult and confusing time for relatives when their loved one comes to live in a care home, so they go out of their way to educate families about living with the condition. As part of this, they take a person-centred approach, as each person with dementia has different symptoms and experiences, so they take time to get to know them and their family individually. The Caring UK Awards are an annual event recognising excellence and achievement in care homes throughout the

country with shortlisted facilities being as far north as Ballachulish in northern Scotland and as far south as Devon.

Winners will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony on Friday November 15 at The Athena in Leicester.

Dinosaurs from the Natural History Museum are heading to Peterborough Cathedral for summer 2020 Peterborough Cathedral has announced that it is to display the Natural History Museum’s touring exhibition, T. rex: The Killer Question, during the summer of 2020. The display will be installed in the early sixteenth century New Building at the east end of the Cathedral and is made up of 14 dinosaurs, nine

of which are animatronic models. Amongst the collection is a moving, threequarter size T. rex, as well as life-size T. rex skeleton and a 12-metre-long static model of the creature. Models of other dinosaurs, such as Saurornitholestes, Ankylosaurus, Deinonychus and Edmontosaurues, will also be shown alongside

T. rex for comparison, so that visitors can consider the ‘killer question’: Was T. rex a ferocious hunter or a mere scavenger? It is planned that the exhibition will be on show from 20th July to 31st August and tickets will go on sale in the new year. The Cathedral’s regular programme of services will carry on as usual.

The district’s Walking for Health initiative marked the occasion with a celebratory event at the South Holland Centre recently, which was attended by 130 walk leaders and volunteers. The scheme helps to support South Holland District Council’s priority of developing safer, stronger, healthier and more independent communities whilst protecting the most vulnerable. Walking for Health offers thirteen walks across the district run by eight walking groups. Success Celebrated With Silver Patronage A scheme which has helped over a hundred young people improve their job prospects has led The Prince’s Trust to make Lincolnshire Co-op its newest silver patron. Lincolnshire Co-op works in partnership with the charity to deliver the Get into Retail programme, which helps people aged 16 to 30 build their skillsets and find employment. Participants grow their confidence through training, teambuilding and volunteering.

6 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

They also boost their CVs with a three-week placement in a Lincolnshire Co-op outlet. So far 137 young people have participated in seven rounds of the programme since 2015, with 55% of those finding jobs with Lincolnshire Co-op. Other participants use their new skills to land roles with different local employers. And following this success, Lincolnshire Co-op has been named a silver patron and a corporate partner with The

Prince’s Trust. It’s the only Lincolnshire-based business to have been awarded silver patron status by The Prince’s Trust. Lincolnshire Co-op’s Chief Executive Ursula Lidbetter said: “We’re proud to become a Prince’s Trust silver patron following the success of our Get into Retail scheme and the achievements of all those who’ve taken part in it. “The scheme helps them unlock their talent, power up their confidence and land a job. Whether that role is with us or another local employer, it all helps boost the local economy.” Michele Farmer, The Prince’s Trust Regional Director, Central Region said: “Working with Lincolnshire Co-op in partnership on the Get into Retail programme has already helped make a difference to the lives of over 130 young people locally. “We are so pleased to be expanding this partnership with Lincolnshire Co-op becoming silver patrons of the Trust,

working together in Lincolnshire for the next four years to transform even more young lives in the county. “The support, tenacity, and enthusiasm from all Lincolnshire Co-op colleagues is what will make it possible for us to support even more young people to build confidence, access transformative courses, and shape their careers. When young people succeed, our country succeeds, and working together in partnership with great organisations like Lincolnshire Co-op is vital to achieve this.” The silver patronage was awarded to Lincolnshire Co-op at a celebration event together with The Prince’s Trust and past participants. The newest and eighth round of the Get into Retail programme with Lincolnshire Co-op concluded today. Nick’s Notes Worth Cllr Nick

I

am sure most of us are well aware of the excellent services provided by Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue, but only a small percentage of their work (around 14%) is dealing with fires. Increasingly they are having to deal with floods and water rescue and are now regularly attending county wide and national incidents, providing resilience for other fire authorities around the country. However over 50% of their work is co-responding, primarily dealing with category 1 emergency calls for people suffering a heart attack or similar. In a large rural county like Lincolnshire this service provides great reassurance to those living in rurally isolated communities, knowing that you will get a quick response. The average response time for retained stations (firefighters have to get from their home or work into the station) on receiving the call, to them leaving the station is four and a half minutes, which is impressive. Later this month will see the 20th anniversary of the co-responder service in Lincolnshire, the first to do this in the UK. This is a part of the service they can be really proud of and

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages.... continue to lead the field nationally. The reason that there are thankfully fewer fires is due to many years of preventative work, through focussed campaigns aimed at the causes of fires such as kitchen fires in particular and that can be through leaving frying pans on hobs, “keep looking when cooking”, keeping doors shut when you go to bed to restrict the spread of fire and making sure your chimneys are regularly swept. One area of work you may not be so aware of is Fire & Rescue’s Safe & Well visits. These are generally referrals made after someone, mostly the elderly, have come out of hospital and are back in their own home. Referrals can be made by anyone, not just professionals. The visits often result in new smoke alarms being fitted (and in the most appropriate place, free of charge), advice on potential trips, such as rugs and electrical cables, electrical advice particularly extension leads which are regularly over burdened and other advice depending on your individual situations. Most recently a new campaign has been launched called “SHERMAN”.

S stands for smoker, H for Hoarder, E if you are elderly or live alone, R if you have reduced mobility, M for mental health issues, A for alcohol misuse and N if you need care or support. So if you know someone who fits into any of these categories and who you think would benefit from a safe and well visit contact 01476 565441 or Lincolnshire.gov.uk/LFR . Help us to help them and in in the process you will help us to continue to reduce fires and save lives. Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue is always looking to recruit new retained firefighters in particular, so if you want to help your local community and live within 5 minutes of your nearest fire station please do get in touch, you will be most welcome. November 5th will shortly be with us along with associated bonfires and fireworks – there are some great events, professionally organised, which are spectacular – try to go to one of those, much safer and probably less expensive than having your own!

Advice Redundancy if Your Employer is Insolvent If you are made redundant because your employer is insolvent, this counts as a genuine redundancy. You’re normally entitled to redundancy pay if you: • have been made redundant • were an employee • were continuously employed by the insolvent business for 2 years or more Depending on your age, you’ll get: • half a week’s pay for each full year you were employed and under 22 years old • one week’s pay for each full year you were employed and between 22 and 40 years old • one and half week’s pay for each full year you were employed and 41 or older Redundancy payments are capped at £525 a week (£508 if you were made redundant before 6 April 2019). You can get a payment for a maximum of 20 years that you were employed at the business. You can apply for unpaid wages and other money you’re owed by your employer, for example bonuses, overtime and commission. However, you’re only entitled to money that is in your contract of employment. You will get up to eight weeks of money you’re owed. It counts as a week even if you’re only owed money for a few days. Income Tax and National Insurance contributions must be paid on unpaid wages, however, if you pay too much then you may be able to claim a tax refund. You’re entitled to a paid notice period when you’re made redundant, even if it is not in your contract. You can claim for statutory notice pay if you: • did not work a notice period • worked some of your notice period • worked an unpaid notice period

s U o t k l Ta

Your statutory notice pay is worked out as one week’s notice for every year you were employed, up to a maximum of twelve weeks. Payments are capped at £525 per week (£508 if you were made redundant before 6 April 2019). If you are missing pension contributions, contact the insolvency practitioner (the person dealing with the insolvency. You can get paid for: • holiday days owed that you did not take (‘holiday pay accrued’) • holiday days you took but were not paid for (‘holiday pay taken’) You’re only paid for holidays you took or accrued in the 12 months before your employer became insolvent. You’ll only get payments for up to 6 weeks of holiday days. Holiday pay is capped at £525 per week (£508 per week if your employer went insolvent before 6 April 2019). You pay income tax and National Insurance on your holiday payment. You might be able to claim a tax refund if you’ve paid too much. If your employer has gone out of business and is insolvent, and you haven’t been paid your redundancy, use the ‘Claim for redundancy and monies owed’ service on GOV.UK. You can apply immediately after your redundancy, but will need a case reference number from the individual dealing with insolvency and cannot apply without one. You must apply within six months of being made redundant and will normally be paid six weeks after you have

Mini Police

Mini Police across Spalding and South Holland have been very busy over the past few weeks. The start of the school year is a strange time for Mini Police, in that there is a lot to do in school, and the Mini Police elections have to be completed before any tasks can be done. As I write this, most of the schools across South Holland have been elected and are planning their next tasks to be completed after half term. Teachers have been reviewing the lesson plans offered by the programme, cross-referencing with their curriculums and selecting which topics will be delivered in school. Our programme curriculum is written to be delivered over a two year period without repeating. We are now halfway through this period, and many schools are choosing what we deliver. Our programme splits the topics we deliver into two categories – National Priorities (which are mandated by Lincolnshire Police) and Local Priorities (chosen by schools). Each topic delivers its own key message to children and many provide an opportunity to engage with local community – this can vary from carrying out Crime Prevention walks to educate resident about crime prevention measures, to our Fatal 4 task which

consisted of conducting traffic monitoring and speaking with drivers who are travelling at above the speed limits. Last year this was a very popular task, with motorists in towns and villages across South Holland being monitored and engaging with the Mini Police. Our ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ task has also been popular – this task encourages whole classes (not just Mini Police) to think about what acts of kindness they do, why they do them and how they affect others – we then task children to become ‘Kindness Secret Agents’ and carry out random acts of kindness without being spotted – did your child suddenly offer to wash up, or become surprisingly handy with the hoover? You never know, it might have had something to do with us! Our Mini Police carried out some amazing Random Acts of Kindness – they did litter picks, charity cake sales and sponsored walks – all from their own initiatives. School News Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Ayscoughfee Hall School Whilst the main event since our return in September has undoubtedly been the official opening of the new Infant Centenary Block, the children have been busy elsewhere too! Year 3 visited Flag Fen as part of their topic ‘The Celts’, and had a great time being archaeologists as well as experiencing activities linked to the Celtic lifestyle. Year 6 enjoyed an Indian Experience with Sunita, learning dances and myths from that country and continued their learning with a visit to The Spice Affair where they made their own naans and had a fantastic lunch! The Kindergarten children have settled in well and have been on a walk to feed the ducks and made multi coloured jellies. Reception have visited Spalding Market where they bought a variety of fruit and vegetables. These were used to make models of Super Veggies, to use with their Super hero topic and to make fruit kebabs. The whole school and many parents and friends came together to celebrate Harvest Festival, with produce being taken to Agape later in the afternoon. The children have been busy with their sporting activities too, with netball and Tag Rugby matches played in Peterborough and Grantham. We also had a day of Yoga for all the children from Reception upwards as part of the School’s new ‘Resilience’ programme.

New College Stamford As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, New College Stamford staff and students pulled together to support a Mental Health and Wellbeing fair in the college’s Bistro highlighting the importance of self-care on young people’s mental health. Colleges across England teach and train 2.2 million people each year - including 685,000 young people. Every year, 1 in 10 young people experience a mental health problem and 1 in 5 young people aged 16-24 experience a common mental illness such as anxiety or depression at any one time. Add to these facts, 75% of adults with a diagnosable mental health problem experience their first symptoms before the age of 24 means New College Stamford plays a vital role in supporting the mental health and wellbeing of its students and staff. A number of volunteers from

different local organisations, mental health experts, shops and charities all pulled together to support the event. Including; Insight Healthcare Peterborough, Papyrus (Prevention of Young Suicide), Careers First, Young Addaction, LUSH, and even Clubbercise for a lunchtime dance work out! The college’s very own Beauty Therapy students put what they’ve learnt to the test and offered staff and students free hand massages and manicures. Beauty students were joined by high street bath bomb giant LUSH to highlight the benefits of self-care and wellbeing on positive mental health. The college has also reaffirmed their commitment to staff and students by signing up to a brand new national mental health and wellbeing charter - created by the Association of Colleges in conjunction with mental health

experts. The 11-point document includes commitments to: • Promoting equality of opportunity and challenging mental health stigma • Providing appropriate mental health training for staff • Providing targeted individual mental health support where appropriate Richard Caulfield, Mental Health

lead at the Association of Colleges, said: “Every single day colleges like New College Stamford, provide a world class education and transform the lives of millions of people. This includes providing support for both staff and student wellbeing at the right time, in the right place. This charter gives colleges the chance to publicly state their commitment to the mental health agenda.”

Adult Book Choice Common Ground by Rob Cowen Returning to his native Yorkshire, Rob Cowen describes his discovery of the edge land; the overgrown lanes and disused railway tracks through evening and early morning walks, which bring him into close contact with the local wildlife. Blurring the boundaries of memoir, natural history and novel, this book offers nothing less than an enthralling new way of writing about nature and our experiences within it.

Childrens Book Choice The Magic Place by Chris Wormell Imprisoned in the cellar of a tall thin house in the Great Black City and made to work by her wicked aunt and uncle, Clementine’s life is grim, and Gilbert is her only friend (but he’s a cat). And yet Clementine has a dream, a dream of another home in a Magic Place, but can she ever escape and find her way there?

Tails By Jo Wright

When it comes to greeting a friendly face or taking up lots of space, it’s Otis’ time to shine! Always happy to accept a scratch behind his ears and frequently found stretched out in the middle of the floor, this dear old dog has had a busy month…

H

ave you started your Christmas shopping? My human and I have – accidentally. We went on a walk to our local garden centre to buy a bit of netting for our veg patch. Two scarves, a couple of books, a sparkly unicorn bag and some seeds later, we (well, she) struggled home under the weight of our newly acquired gifts. I didn’t see any dog treats among our haul, although we did spend a long time looking at doggy coats… I’ve been wandering alongside water this month with some very muddy paws. Not my own, would you believe? Nope, my big human and my smaller human were

the ones getting their wellies in a state thanks to the squishy squashy patches of mud scattered along the banks of Spalding’s Coronation Channel. What fun we all had, greeting fellow dogs great and small, families and a couple of swans! The river rippled alongside us, and imagine my humans’ delight when they caught sight of

something making its way under the bridge. Again, not me, but a canoe being paddled along! On our walkies this month we were also joined by chums of the two-legged kind. We were surrounded by beaks! ‘Look Otis, ducks!’ my human explained, retrieving some bread from her pockets. They’re very noisy, aren’t they? I decided to try a bit of a quack myself. After all, I’m rather partial to the odd bit of bread too. Just as well, because my imitation of my newly found feathery friends made them all flap and fly away, leaving rather a lot of loaf un-nibbled. As the days are getting cooler (and wetter!) it seems to take my humans forever to get ready to take me out. Hats, gloves, scarves, warm coats, boots! All I need is my lead. Wait! I wonder if one of those doggy coats will make it into my Christmas stocking…

Until next time, your friend,

Otis

Post 16 options At 16 you will be making some major choices about your future. This is the chance for you to decide what you want to do. Places to study at 16 Many people chose to say on at school, but there are other choices too, like studying at a college or training provider or getting an apprenticeship. Full-time Education After taking your GCSEs (Level 2 qualifications), you could move on to Level 3 qualifications, either by staying on in school or going to college. The courses at Level 3 are A levels (mainly to qualify you for university) and vocational qualifications (to qualify you for a job). You can take a mixture, but if you are thinking of going to university, you’ll usually have to have at least one A level. Many universities will require more than one.

achievements, what you want and need to do next, and any career plans you have. Study programmes should combine learning about an area of work or subject, developing personal and social skills and improving skills in English, Maths and ICT. There is a requirement that students who gained a D mark in English or Maths will have

to re-sit these and you must continue to study them in school or college, along with whatever else you decide to do. How to choose When you’re choosing your next step, it’s useful to think about what career you would like and that can often dictate which route is best for you. Look

at all options, visit schools and colleges on their open days, take your parents or a trusted adult so they can help you decide and may think of questions you wouldn’t. Or you could visit the National Careers website to look at job profiles. Each of them gives you the essential information you need on what the job involves and if it’s right for you.

Study Programmes If you’re going into post-16 education or training, your school or college should offer you a study programme whether you’re doing academic or vocational study (or a mix of both). Your study programme should be, as far as possible, a tailored package. It’s like an individual learning plan based on your qualifications and

Following Government encouragement, FENSA has been set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and other industry bodies in response to Building Regulations for double glazing companies in England and Wales. When replacing windows, doors and roof lights in dwellings in England and Wales, homeowners must comply with current thermal performance and Building Regulation standards and ensure they get a certificate from a Competent Person scheme such as FENSA or Local Authority Building Control. FENSA enables companies that install replacement windows and doors to self-certify compliance under these Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control.

Health & Beauty

Earcare this Winter

With winter well and truly arrived, it’s time for everyone to take precautions to keep themselves healthy during the chilly season. But it turns out that wrapping up warm isn’t just helpful for people looking to not catch a cold, it can also help keep your hearing on form. Rough weather, particularly cold conditions, can present challenges for exposed body parts, particularly the ears. Ears cool down very quickly because they have no protective fat tissue. The nerves in the ear canal run unprotected under the skin and may react with a strong pain impulse to changing temperatures. In addition, the risk of infection in the ears increases in cold conditions because less blood is circulated. Cold and wind can irritate the ear canal, which often causes pain, while water in the ears can cause inflammation. Also, a cold head may cause cramped muscles in the neck region, which can lead to ear problems like tinnitus. People with hearing aids should be aware that cold conditions can cause batteries to run down more quickly, and condensation can occur inside the hearing instrument, causing an electronics

24 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

failure. • Do keep your ears warm by wearing a hat, headband, earmuffs or a good ski helmet. • Don’t put cotton wool in your ears to protect them from the wind. This actually can cause inflammation in the ear canal. • Do dry your ear canal as well as possible after showering, swimming or using a sauna. With care, you may be able to do this with a hair dryer. • Don’t neglect an ear infection. See your physician or an ENT specialist. Left untreated, an infection can get worse and cause serious damage. • Do stick to a healthy diet and do plenty of exercise to stimulate blood circulation to your ears. • Don’t use hot water to warm up cold ears. Gently massage them instead. People who wear hearing aids need to remember

these simple tips: • Always have spare batteries available. If batteries get cold, you can warm them for 5 minutes in your closed hand or in a pocket; do NOT use a lighter. • Never put hearing instruments on a heater. • Special drying containers, available from hearing care professionals, can prevent damage caused by condensation. • Water-resistant hearing instruments are less susceptible to damage from condensation. If you’re flying with a cold or sinus infection Hopping on a plane in winter with a nasty cold or sinus infection will not only involve a lot of possible sniffing, it can cause you significant ear pain – especially if you have a pre-existing infection to accompany your illness.

Welcome to

Fenland Flying School Here at Fenland Flying School, we introduce people to the joys of flying! Whether it’s a one-off flight for that special occasion or full flying training for your Private Pilot’s Licence, Fenland Flying School is here to facilitate all your aviation training needs!

W

e operate out of Fenland Airfield, which appears to be a well-kept Lincolnshire secret situated just east of Spalding. It is here that we bring to fruition the dreams of would-be aviators, not just the older person that has long yearned to fly, but also we’re able to help the young professional pilots’ careers literally take off! They are furnished not only with a thorough understanding of all aviation matters but also are equipped with the skills and qualifications that will set them off on their career path. Whether it is the first step to becoming an airline pilot or getting your light aircraft pilot’s licence, for the opportunity to take to the skies and relish the freedom and pure joy that this brings, especially when qualified and able to share it with your nearest and dearest, we are there to assist. We could talk about it until the cows come home but you really need to get over here and experience the uplifting sensation of dancing among the clouds and seeing the world from a new perspective. We guarantee you’ll go home with a smile on your face and memories to treasure! You can get started with a Trial Lesson, from £103 for a 40-minute lesson, and handle the controls yourself, under the supervision of one of our highly experienced instructors, or an Introductory Flight, from £40 for 20 minutes, will enable you to get up there and enjoy the views as a passenger.

For that special gift we offer personalised Gift Vouchers that you can purchase to provide your loved one with an unforgettable experience they will forever remember.

These flights can encompass soaring above your home or taking in a unique view of the Wash, marshes and the many seals, for example. Learning to Fly Learning to fly is much less expensive than many people realise and makes a superb hobby, being much cheaper than many other hobbies. People can and do spend more money on scuba-diving, fishing or golf, for example. Being in a quiet corner (close to the Wash) of Lincolnshire, Fenland Flying School is ideally suited for flying training, benefiting from quiet unrestricted airspace with no queues for take-offs and landings. Our full-time experienced instructors offer tailored one-to-one tuition, so we are able to nurture the student pilot progressing at their own pace. Even after acquiring their licence, we can continue further training (bad weather or night flying) and of course pilots can also hire one of the School’s fleet of light aircraft. All of the training they need, for example, ground school for the theory in meteorology, navigation, etc can be carried out in the well-equipped and friendly environment of the School, thus being a true one-stop shop. Another massive advantage that Fenland offers is the friendly Club environment.

The airfield and the Club were originally established in the 1970s with the objective of ‘Promoting the amateur sport of flying, at the lowest possible rates.’ This is still our ethos and we still enjoy the superb friendly club atmosphere in our own Clubhouse and restaurant, also open to the public, where aviation minded members socialise. The Simulator

A new addition that is proving very popular, is the custom-made simulator. This comes into its own when the weather is poor; we can still get to go flying in weather of our own choice! The best bit, for some people, is the fact that its much cheaper to operate than a real aeroplane! Like the Trial Lessons and the Introductory Flights, the Simulator is open to all! Why not give us a ring and take the next step to fulfilling your dreams! www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 29

Home & Property

Home security and technology Home security and technology are increasingly linked. Using tech to secure your home is more common. Here, we present a number of tips to keep your home safe, including some specific tips relating to the winter period now that it is upon us: • Lock away your snow shovel. Although useful for clearing pathways during difficult periods, snow shovels are perfect tools for burglars to gain entry. Secure tools to prevent such occurrences. • Lock doors and windows. Regardless of how long you will be away from your property, it is important to keep your doors and windows locked. Most homes are fitted with UPVC windows which must be double locked. Ultimately, when you’re away from your home for long periods of time, remember to lock your deadbolt. • Have a burglar alarm fitted. Burglars will not even attempt to break into a property which has a visual burglar alarm outside. Although an alarm can be an expensive investment, it can be invaluable for protecting your home and deterring burglars. • Hide keys. Some burglars attempt to fish keys through a letterbox which have been left on a hall side table for example. Don’t give burglars the opportunity and make sure keys are hidden from view. • Keep your home well lit. During the winter months, daylight hours are inevitably reduced, presenting opportunities for burglars. Remember to keep your home well lit using motion activated outdoor security lights and indoor timers. If you want to go the extra mile, you could even invest in a home automation system where your lights can be controlled from your mobile device. • Limit social media activity. Although social media is a useful way to share life events, it can also be

34 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

an ideal platform for burglars to find opportunities to break into properties. Ensure not to upload photos of your property until you are home. This is just the start of the considerations for home security and technology. • Make your home look lived in (even if you’re away.) If you are away from home for certain periods of time, it can be useful to ask a neighbour to complete certain tasks such as clearing your driveway of snow or collecting overflowing mail. Such activity deceives burglars into thinking someone is home. Therefore, reducing the threat of burglary to your property. • Maintain border fences. Badly maintained or rotting fences provide perfect access to your property by burglars. To prevent this happening, keep your fences well maintained by repairing or replacing them when necessary. Subsequently, it is also important to keep side gates locked. • Lock away valuable objects. Valuable objects such as bikes are a quick gain for thieves as they are easy to steal and provide the added advantage of providing a quick getaway. Ensure such items are locked up with a high-quality lock. • Make items traceable. For high value items, it is worth marking them using a special type of pen. This allows the items to be traced back to the owner if theft does occur. • Join or form a neighbourhood watch scheme. Have the peace of mind knowing that your neighbours are viewing your property from time to time. This could allow a faster response if an

incident was to occur. • Be mindful of where to store high value items. Ensure that high value items are out of view. Additionally, it may be worth locking away very valuable items in a safe or vault. Modern methods of securing your home There are a number of modern techniques now available. Home security and technology work well together, so here are some great ideas – • Smart door locks. Smart door locks allow you to secure your home without a key. They pose a range of benefits over traditional key entry locks, including the ability to control the lock via an app, eliminating keys and being battery powered, meaning no wiring needed. • Smart home alarms. A smart home alarm is similar in some ways to a traditional alarm, except it allows you to control it via an app. They pose a range of benefits over traditional systems. These include being easy to fit and easy to control via an app (amongst other things) • CCTV kits. For an advanced solution to keeping your home safe, you may consider investing in a CCTV kit. CCTV is useful in monitoring activity in and around your home, and modern kits allow you to remotely view footage. • Digital door viewers. Unlike older styles of door viewers, digital viewers have the added advantage of providing a very clear image. This allows the viewer to get a clearer picture of who is at their door.

ABC advice on winter driving As temperatures start to get lower and the nights draw in, it means one thing is certain: winter is only around the corner. Unfortunately, as with much of the UK, there are car accidents on Lincolnshire’s roads every time there’s a cold snap – so anything you can do to help avoid any heartbreak has to be a good thing. The most important message is to err on the side of caution and not get behind the wheel if it’s snowing or a flurry is forecast. In a rural county such as Lincolnshire, you can find yourself in remote areas, and for that reason it’s always best to be prepared. Listen to forecasts, and make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and kitted out. If you get caught in bad weather the most critical thing is to slow right down and keep your distance, taking into account it will take you much longer to stop in an emergency.

36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

With that in mind, it’s time for motorists to start thinking about the ‘ABC’ of winter driving. Avoid driving in snow and other perilous conditions. Never set off when it’s snowing or forecast to, and avoid driving if you possibly can in other bad conditions like fog, heavy rain and ice. Consider alternatives such as walking or using public transport if available. Speak to your employer about working from home when weather is very bad, especially if you live in a rural area prone to snow or floods. Be prepared. Make sure your car is well maintained, and tyres have a tread depth of at least 3mm. Check forecasts and plan your route to avoid roads likely to be more risky and allow plenty of

time. Pack a winter driving kit in case you’re caught out. This should include: an ice scraper or de-icer; torch; cloths; a blanket and warm clothes; food and drink; first-aid kit; spade; warning triangle; and a high-visibility vest. Always take a fully charged phone in case of emergencies, but don’t be tempted to use it when driving. Careful and cautious driving. If you do get caught out driving in hazardous conditions, you need to slow right down to increase the distance from the vehicle in front. In snow or icy conditions stopping distances increase by as much as ten times so you need to drop right back. Keep a careful look out for people on foot and bikes who may be harder to spot.

Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid Auto Excel The Toyota Camry is a bit of a legend - 19 million have been made and sold since 1982. It’s been away from the UK for 15 years, though – and we’ve missed it. Toyota’s also missed selling it here, so the Camry’s finally coming back – and this time it’s in hybrid guise. The Japanese motor-maker reckons the Camry’s petrolelectric powertrain and attractive styling make it the ‘right vehicle at the right time’ to return to these shores. Is it? Well, the Camry is costly - but look a little closer, and the £29,995 price-tag on the basic model seems less of an issue when you realise how inexpensive it will be to run. Depending on the way you drive and where your drive, the Toyota’s ability to manage short distances on electricity only could save you

forking out at the pumps. It’s stress-free to drive, with agreeable visibility and light steering. Whisk things up, and there’s enough pull from the Camry’s 218ps that you seldom need to go full throttle. Regrettably, it’s common for hybrids to disappoint when it comes to refinement at motorway speeds. The subdued powerplant in the Toyota means your ears become sensitive to other noises. Tyre roar begins to become irksome, as does the persistent wind whistle. But it still doesn’t make the Camry bad company at 70mph - you just need to turn the music up more. There’s no dodging the fact that the latest Camry is going to appeal to taxi firms and private

hire businesses. But that’s no bad thing - it’s roomy enough for five adults and, at 524 litres, the boot is large. The Toyota’s Achilles’ heel, however, is its infotainment system. It is uncooperative, and the glass touchscreen on the dashboard is maddeningly insensitive when you touch it. The automaker says it will fit Android Auto and Apple CarPlay soon, but it won’t be obtainable at launch. If you can ignore the Camry’s convoluted fascia, you won’t be let down by the factoryfitted equipment. There’s lots of it - and only two trims to go for. The ‘Design’ version retails for £29,995, and the top ‘Excel’ model will reduce your bank account by another £1,300. The Design has dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, keyless entry and LED lights. It also comes with 17-inch alloys. Progress to the Camry Excel, as test-driven at the model’s media launch in Croatia, and you will find LED fog lamps, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a Blind Spot Monitor and wireless phone charging.
