Welcome to the October issue
I
t has been a challenging few weeks transitioning from a family of 3 to 4, juggling the needs of a newborn and a toddler has been a whole new experience but a journey we are enjoying. We have had our first family holiday in Norfolk, we were very lucky with the weather and had some lovely days out exploring our neighbouring county. In this issue we are looking at all things chocolate (my favourite topic!) as it is National Chocolate Month, if you are one of the many people who suffer with back pain then check out our guide to treatments on page 24. If over the summer you have got engaged or are going to be involved in a wedding, our wedding feature is focussing on the speeches, who should say what and new trends. As winter is now well and truly upon us, we are looking at keeping warm this winter. What are you entitled to, top tips to save money and be more energy efficient. Finally, this month Tim takes the Volvo V90R for a spin! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue!

Comic Relief and UK Community Foundations launches a new £2million initiative investing in small community organisations across the UK Comic Relief and UK Community Foundations announced a new £2 million investment into supporting small community led organisations across the UK, which will play a vital role supporting people to make positive changes in their lives and their local communities. Grassroots organisations like these have been hit particularly hard over the last few years due to the current economic climate, which has made it harder to secure funding and yet these organisations are often the first and sometimes only point of support for individuals and communities trying to make a difference in their lives. The Core Strength – Local Communities initiative provides funding for essential core running costs for small locally led community organisations. Grants between £1,000 to £5,000 for up to 12 months are available to local community organisations with an annual income of up to £100,000. The initiative will sit under the Comic Relief programme of Building Stronger Communities – supporting groups who work to make their communities more connected, empowered and productive. Gilly Green, head of UK grants said, “We at Comic Relief recognise the importance of these community led organisations and their critical work. We also know that sometimes even the basics of keeping the
lights on can be a struggle at the moment, let alone time to plan and invest in growth. At the heart of this funding is to give organisations the choice of where their needs lie – be it paying for the rent and lighting or invest in development and forward planning. We are proud to lead this approach and invest into the heart of our local communities”. Fabian French, CEO UK Community Foundations said, “At UK Community Foundations we know that one of the key challenges faced by local organisations is getting funding for their core running costs, which is especially difficult when public sector grants are running dry. We’re delighted to continue our strong partnership with Comic Relief to help small and local charities concentrate on what they do best – helping those in need”. Closing dates for receipt of applications are on 1 November 2017 and 1 March 2018.
Resurfacing work between Gosberton and Sutterton Work has begun on a three mile stretch of the B1397 and A152 between Gosberton and Sutterton will be made safer for motorists, thanks to resurfacing works. To allow the work to be carried out safely, the B1397 is currently closed between Gosberton and the A17 throughout. A short section of the A152 was also closed for three days at the start of the project and then

will need to be closed again for a few days towards the end. Cllr Richard Davies, Executive Member for Highways, said: “These roads have suffered a lot of wear and tear over the years so it’s essential we repair them to ensure the route remains safe for people to use. “This will be one of the biggest resurfacing jobs we’ve done this year,

and will significantly improve things for motorists. “As with any road improvements, there is likely to be some shortterm disruption, so we recommend people leave additional time for their journeys and take alternative routes where possible.” For the latest news on roadworks taking place around the county, visit www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/roadworks.

News Boom in tourism is now worth £1.37 billion to the Lincolnshire economy The value of Lincolnshire’s tourism industry has risen by more than £300m over the last five years, reaching £1.37bn in 2016. Tourism employs over 19,000 people. The latest STEAM figures show that in 2016 the county attracted almost 20m visitors - almost 3m more than it did in 2011. And that has helped increase the value of the county’s visitor economy by around 30 percent over that five year period. Cllr Colin Davie, Executive Member for Economic Development, said: “Tourism is a key industry for the county economy, employing over
19,000 people. “We’re working hard to attract even more visitors, and over the last couple of years we’ve dramatically improved what we have to offer. “From the major refurbishment of Lincoln Castle to the new visitor centre at Gibraltar Point and the outdoor theatre space at Chapel St Leonards, we’re making sure Lincolnshire is a year-round tourist destination. “With the RAF centenary year in 2018 and Mayflower 400 celebrations in 2020 there is much more on the horizon, I’m confident our tourism economy will continue to thrive in the years to come.”
Happy birthday to the Happy Breathers group A support group and community clinic for people with the lung condition COPD has celebrated its first birthday. The Spalding-based Happy Breathers group was established as a pilot project in August last year and now regularly attracts up to 20 attendees each week. Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service worked with South Lincolnshire Clinical Commissioning Group to launch the group. David Fannin, LCVS chief executive, said: “The success is perceived to be so great that this pilot project has been extended into 2018 and weekly hours increased from two to three. The sessions are run on an informal, drop-in basis with the usual format seeing gentle, appropriate exercise on offer during parts of the session for those who wish to take part and a different activity, talk or demonstration each week. Refreshments, chatting and access to respiratory professionals are also part of the offer. The clinic is designed to recognise that people are often the
experts on their own situation and condition and therefore those who attend have a large say in what it includes. Sessions are attended by Lincolnshire Community Health Services (LCHS) respiratory clinicians and provide opportunities for group advice and information. The clinic also offers an opportunity to find out about and share information on other services available in the local area. To find out more about the COPD community clinic contact LCVS on 01205 510888 option 3, email enquiry@lincolnshirecvs. org.uk or go along to the Ivo Day Centre, Albion Street, Spalding, 1.30pm to 4.30pm, Thursdays.

Become a volunteer mentor and make a difference A Lincolnshire woman who is helping others to enjoy the benefits of volunteering whilst doing it herself is urging others to get involved too. Volunteering can aid self esteem, well being, increase your social circle and be a useful stepping stone to a future goal such as employment or improved mental health. Retired Jaye Adams (64), a former CCTV operator and courts security officer, of Cherry Holt Lane, Pinchbeck, supports Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) as a volunteer mentor, providing support on a one-toone basis to help others take the first steps into volunteering. LCVS is seeking to recruit others to similar roles in Boston, East Lindsey, South Holland and South Kesteven. Jaye said: “I just wanted to make a difference and try and help someone. “I’d recommend volunteering 100 per cent. It’s a big challenge but each time you get over a hurdle it’s more satisfying. “This role has given me an insight into how to support people with mental health issues. “It’s a nice feeling knowing you’ve made a difference to someone and you’ve made their day a little bit better. It makes me feel so good to see a smile on my mentee’s face.” LCVS – the charity that runs Volunteer Centres in Spalding, Boston, Louth and Grantham – currently has capacity to recruit further volunteer mentors and champions. Volunteering Champions, attend events, meeting people and promoting the benefits of volunteering. Ruth Copleston, LCVS senior operations officer, said: “Volunteering is well proven to offer a wide variety of health and well being benefits and can increase job prospects too. “We’re looking to recruit people who want to access all those benefits themselves and tell others about them. “These are roles for people who really want to make a difference to individuals and their local communities.” No experience is necessary and training will be provided. These roles provide great work experience and any time you can give will be welcomed. LCVS keeps a database of available voluntary roles to suit all interests, ranging from administration to animal welfare. If you’re interested in volunteering in any capacity contact LCVS via enquiry@lincolnshirecvs.org.uk or call 01205 510888 and select your local office from the options offered. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 5

St Barnabas says ‘thank you’ St Barnabas is marking a milestone anniversary and has presented an award to Lincolnshire Co-op as part of its celebrations. The charity provides hospice services, care and support for people with life-limiting illnesses across Lincolnshire. It held a special event to commemorate its 35th birthday on Thursday 14th September, where awards were handed to just some of the dedicated staff who make its work possible. The event also thanked different organisations for their support of St Barnabas - including an award for Lincolnshire Co-op and its members. The Corporate of the Year – Working Better Together award was presented to the Society on the night. Together with its members and colleagues, Lincolnshire Co-op has supported St Barnabas in different ways through the years. Help recently came through through the
Community Champions scheme, which supports local good causes. During the health quarter from March to May this year, together colleagues and members raised funds for nine local hospice organisations including St Barnabas. Donations were made every time members shopped in Lincolnshire Co-op outlets, along with fundraising by colleagues including a £10,000 pedometer challenge in May. The carrier bag levy went into the pot, too. Colleagues from Head Office also walked 20 miles round Lincoln in May, stopping at 13 food stores who were all raising money for St Barnabas during the quarter. Lots of colleagues also took part in this year’s 5k St Barnabas Colour Dash. The efforts from members and colleagues during the health quarter meant £144,000 was raised in total for the nine local hospices being supported, including a share for St Barnabas.
Making adult care easier and safer with Prepaid Cards An easier and more secure way for people to pay for the care and support they need is coming to Lincolnshire. Lincolnshire County Council is introducing new ways to make care Direct Payments more manageable and secure. The changes include Prepaid Cards, a system which has already proved successful for 130 other public sector organisations across the UK. Prepaid Cards simplify the payment process whilst also protecting people that use them from potential financial abuse.
Those using the new service will no longer need to send bank statements to the council, nor will they be required to set up a separate bank account to receive their Direct Payments into. Executive Councillor for Adult Care, Cllr Patricia Bradwell welcomed the introduction of the new system: “The move to Prepaid Cards is great news for those who need care in Lincolnshire. Prepaid Cards are easy to set up and use, they will also give greater protection to people who are vulnerable to fraud, and those receiving care will

be safer as a result of this change. “Anyone in Lincolnshire, regardless of financial status, who is eligible to receive Social Care Support from the county council can choose to have a Direct Payment and Prepaid Card.” Anyone wanting a Direct Payment will be offered a Prepaid Card. People already receiving a Direct Payment will have the opportunity to switch to a Prepaid Card account during their support plan review. A Prepaid Card is identical to a debit card but for it being solely
used to pay for care and support from an account that is impossible to go overdrawn in. The new system gives people the option to either pay at point of sale using chip and pin or directly into an account via bank transfer. In addition, anyone with a prepaid account can also set up direct debits and standing orders. Approximately 1,400 people in Lincolnshire currently receive a Direct Payment. Further information can be found on the Lincolnshire County Council website.

News Sibsey Lancaster Memorial Trust Annual Memorial Service The service is due to be held on Sunday 1st October 2.30pm, commemorating the Crew of Lancaster ED 503 – No. 9 Squadron. The memorial is to be held at Sibsey Northlands in the field (approx. PE22 0UF), please look out for direction signs, everyone is welcome and invited back to Sibsey Village Hall for free refreshments; this event is free with free parking and a free bus from Tattershall Market Place at 1.30pm. We have as usual ask for a fly past by the Lancaster or Dekota. In 1943 a Lancaster aircraft crashed in a field at Sibsey Northland killing all members of the crew. One member of the crew was recovered and he is buried in Scotland. The aircraft and men are buried where they fell; the ground was too marshy to allow any recovery. The book ‘Memorial Lancaster ED503’ by Stan Naylor is now available £5.95 On January 29th 1943, the six-man
crew of a No 9 Squadron Lancaster aircraft, Ed503, were killed when it crashed into the Lincolnshire Fens. The brand new Lancaster Mk III with only 85 minutes flying time recorded was scheduled to bomb the V-boat pens at Lorient in France. However, owing to bad weather over the target, the raid was cancelled before take-off. The plane was subsequently re-scheduled to a training session. No one knows why the aircraft suddenly lost height and crashed into this field, creating a crater in the wet quicksand and subsoil. It was impossible, despite pumping by the fire service, to recover the majority of the wreckage or the bodies of the crew, apart from the rear gunner. They remain buried where they fell. To show their respect to the fallen crew and to support the crews members of family that travel here every year – we usually have around 100 people joining us for the service.

Nick Worth, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages
Nick’s Notes
ou can rarely go anywhere nowadays without being held up by roadworks somewhere on your journey, which is frustrating if they are in your local area and if you are a business that is dependent on getting their products delivered on time. This is why most roadworks take place during school holidays when there is noticeably less traffic on the road and therefore the impact is lessened. A lot of work is now carried out overnight for the same reasons, although there is obviously an impact on the costs of the works Even with the best of planning things do go wrong and roadworks go beyond the scheduled timescales, as has recently happened with the Peppermint Roundabout project at Holbeach. In this instance utility companies had not correctly located where the electric cables were and at what depth they were at. This put construction workers at risk of serious injury as well as potentially severing power to the area. The result is a three week delay while the utility company relocates the cables. By the time you read
this, the work on this stretch of the A151 should be nearly completed although there will continue to be traffic lights on the road for a few weeks afterwards. It will also allow for the final layer of tarmac to be laid, which otherwise wouldn’t have been done until December, so some benefits to the project timetable overall. The project has caused major delays in and around Holbeach not helped by HGV’s trying to ignore official diversions. There are now signs advising numerous roads and shortcuts through estates are unsuitable for HGVs, but there is legally nothing else LCC Highways can do to stop them if they choose to ignore them. The old saying, no gain without pain is very true and I know we will all be pleased when the new roundabouts and road improvements in that area open in the new year and weather permitting, even earlier. So while I fully expect many complaints over the next few weeks, the long term gain will be hugely beneficial for the town.

Advice
Private Health Treatment
...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems
You can get private health treatment for any medical condition, providing you can pay for it. This could include treatment in a private hospital, by a medical specialist or GP. It could also include dental treatment, counselling and psychotherapy, physiotherapy, or treatment for drug or alcohol abuse.
Why go private? You might want to get private health treatment when: •the treatment isn’t available on the NHS. For example, cosmetic surgery •there’s a long NHS waiting list and you don’t want to wait •you want to choose the date for a hospital operation •you want to be treated by a consultant of your choice •you want a second opinion on treatment you’ve had on the NHS •health screening.
Things to think about Before getting private treatment, you might want to think about: •whether you can afford it. Unless you have private medical insurance, the cost is likely to be very high •whether you would be able to meet any unexpected additional costs, for example, if you don’t recover from an operation as quickly as expected and you have to stay in hospital longer •whether a private hospital could deal with any complications which might crop up during treatment - for example, does it have intensive care facilities? Before deciding to have private treatment, talk to your GP and NHS doctors about what’s available for future NHS treatment after the private treatment.
Citizens Advice
How to get private health treatment To find a private medical practitioner you could: •ask your GP to refer you or give you details of someone who’s an expert in the area of care you need. If you need to see a specialist, or have hospital treatment, you must be referred by a GP. The GP must tell you if they have a financial interest in the hospital or clinic they are referring you to •contact the professional association for the area of treatment you need •ask your local health authority for a list of all GPs in your area. This will include GPs who do private work. Alternatively, you could ask your own GP if they will treat you privately •look on the internet. The Independent Healthcare Advisory Services has a list of private health providers which may be a good starting point. Search under Our members.
Charges for private health treatment A private health practitioner or hospital is responsible for setting their own charges. You can use the internet to help you find
out what the appropriate charge should be for a particular kind of treatment. Be clear about what you will be charged. You should ask your practitioner what the charges will be in advance. This includes any extra charges for unforeseen events and complications. For example, if an operation takes twice as long as it should, will you have to pay extra. Write down the charges you are quoted so you have a written record. If you have private healthcare, you should check whether the treatment is covered by your insurance policy.

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated
Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

School News
Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school?
Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk
Weston Hills CofE Primary We have had a very busy start to the new school year, with 22 new children starting with us. 21 of these were in our Reception class, and they have all settled very well. Parent meetings were held for all year groups within the first two weeks of the start of term. 11+ tests have taken place within school for all Year 6 pupils hoping for a selective place at secondary school. Good luck! We hosted a K’nex Challenge for our Class 4 & 5 children at the end of September – their brief was to make a trebuchet with the help of Stem Ambassadors. It was a fantastic day with
some amazing creations! Class 4 have a trip booked to the National Space Centre in Leicester – this is linked to class topics for this term. Class 3 will be going to Peterborough Museum this term on a “Really Roman Day” – again linked to class topics. Year 5&6 children will be going on the annual four day residential trip to Aylmerton Field Study Centre in October. Our extra curricular activities this term include Multi-Skills, Football, Homework, Jigsaw, Cricket, Taiko, Running, Choir & Hockey.
Spalding Parish Church of England Day School What an amazing time children and teachers have had at Spalding Parish Church of England Day School to celebrate National Sports Week! All the children were involved in an Opening Ceremony to officially start the games, parading their Art Work linked to their School Values, Olympic Values and British Values. Carol Felts, a Teaching Assistant who volunteered in the 2012 Olympic Games, trained and led a drumming group of children from across the school. Many club links were made with sporting clubs across the community and the children from Spalding Parish were given the opportunity of a taster session in a variety of different sports. This was a great opportunity for all the children at school with the hope that they will take up a sport out of school too. • Agilitas Sport, run by Rupert Gibson, kick started the week with a ‘Multi-Skills Festival’ for FS2, Y1 and Y2. It was a fast paced morning until lunch will the children taking part in a range of games linked to running, coordination and ball control. Year 6 children worked hard to support the children from the different Year Groups, especially their buddies. • Three Y6 boys, who play for Spalding United, Connor, Keane and Alex, planned and ran a coaching session for the Y3 children linked to their specialist skills in defending, midfield and striking. They finished with a penalty shootout which the Y3 children enjoyed. • Fred Morris from Spalding Hockey Club inspired the Year 5 children and coached them in a range of skills linked to Hockey. The school are excited to be joining the Hockey League in September. • Year 3 and Year 4 have experienced Tennis Sessions at Spalding Tennis Club with coach Glenn Perkins. It is great to have the opportunity to use a fantastic facility so close to school. 14 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
• Alec Harding, from Spalding Gymnastics Academy, put the Year 2s through their paces developing a range of skills and movements within gymnastics. • Martin Beecham and Steve Machin, ran Tag Rugby sessions for the Year 4 children. Many were inspired and progress was evident across the coaching session. • Jodi Ingamells worked with FS2 and Y6 to develop a dance routine with a Latin twist. It was great to see the Year 6 children dancing with their FS2 buddies and having a fantastic experience. • Friday morning saw the children take part in a sponsored event with former Olympic Gymnast, Marissa King. Each child in school took part in a fast and active workout to raise money for school. They then watched an inspirational assembly and demonstration of gymnastic skills which left the children amazed. • Chloe Hannam, former pupil of SPCEDS, also gave an inspirational talk about her journey from being a pupil at school, to swimming in the Olympic trails and her scholarship in America to continue with her swimming career. Parents and carers joined the children for their Closing Ceremony, on the Friday, which included a demonstration of each of the sports they had participated in. With the Art work, drumming group, dancers from Y6 and FS2 it was a fantastic finale to end the week. National Sports Week officially closed with a ‘Stay and Play’ event for the children and their adults after school. They were able to enjoy a BBQ on the field and then play a session of Lacrosse and Cricket. Lacrosse was coached by Amelia Siddall, a teacher from SPCEDS and former Lacrosse play in the England Development Squad. Mark Laud, from Spalding Cricket Club, joined the after school session to coach a session of cricket. The children enjoyed a range of games with him and were able to develop
their technique in batting, bowling and fielding. It was a fantastic celebration of sport to end the week. Great community links have been fostered during the week and SPCEDS would like to thank all the clubs who supported the week organised by Kim Bird and Amelia Siddall.

Mrs Hudson and the Spirit’s Curse by Martin Davies
Saturday 14th October 10.00 am – 12.15 pm Writing Workshop with Helen Gould
‘A group of Limehouse merchants are mysteriously dying off one by one. What if the best detectives for the job aren’t Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson, but Holmes’ housekeeper Mrs Hudson and her assistant Flottie? I really enjoyed this entertaining story. It made a refreshing change to see Mrs Hudson and Flottie keeping one step ahead of Holmes and Watson throughout and I’m sure die hard Sherlock fans won’t be too upset to have their hero outwitted by his intrepid housekeeper.

Follow Your Dreams
Gap years are traditionally the preserve of teenagers and students, but a Spalding couple is proving doesn’t have to be that way.
N
igel Chapman and Louise have given up their stable lifestyle in favour of a round the world trip with their seven-yearold son Kian. They have mapped out a route to parts of America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The family has enjoyed the summer in England and Wales, with Nigel and Louise doing voluntary work at six different field studies centres. The overseas part of their plan began on September 8, with the first leg to San Francisco. Nigel (46) said: “The plan is to travel until at least February, providing we manage to keep to our budget and nothing untoward crops up.
“It’s taken a lot of saving and a lot of planning but we’re thrilled to actually be on it now and seeing new places and enjoying fresh experiences every day makes the months of preparation worth every bit.” Prior to the trip, which began in mid-July, Nigel gave up his employment as a journalist. Louise (37), a freelance writer, will be doing some communications work remotely. Kian has been deregistered from Spalding Monkshouse Prmary School and is being educated by his parents on the road. Nigel and Louise believe the experiences and learning he will gather on the trip will prove valuable. Louise said: “A round the world trip is something we’d always hoped
we’d be able to do. We hadn’t thought it would be in our mid-life but decided now was an opportune time for all of us and have gone for it. “We could have waited until Nigel and I were retired but no one can foresee how their health or finances will be then. “We wanted to experience it with Kian while he’s old enough to appreciate it and young enough to want to do it with us!” The couple have rented out their home to provide some income and their voluntary marketing work with Real Family Holidays has enabled them to stay in and enjoy parts of the UK they had not previously seen. Real Family Holidays are affordable breaks run by the charity Field Studies Council, with the aim of getting families outside learning
together about the environment. The cost is kept low at £30 per person per night full board to try to reach as many as possible. The trips include a free daily activity such as orienteering, den building, survive in the wild skills or rock pooling, with expert guidance. Louise is looking forward to spending time with a best friend who emigrated to Perth, Australia, and Kian is thrilled by the prospect of seeing life in Japan. He’ll be in Tokyo for his eighth birthday. The Chapmans are hoping to spend Christmas Day on a beach in Australia, joined by Nigel’s daughter Tia who is flying out for a holiday during a break in her university studies. Nigel said: “We want this trip to provide us with memories to last a lifetime but we’re not naive enough to think it won’t provide us with some challenges and difficult times.
“And then we get back, we’ll be straight into finding a school place for Kian and employment for us. That may not prove easy, but we’ve said all long that we’ll tackle each hurdle as it arises and try and make the most of everything else in the meantime.”

Halloween Party Games The night of 31 October, the eve of All Saints’ Day is celebrated by children dressing up in frightening masks and costumes and going trick or treating to their neighbours. Halloween is thought to be associated with the Celtic festival Samhain, when ghosts and spirits were believed to be abroad.
I
f you’re throwing a Halloween party, planning some games to play will ensure your guests are kept entertained. Halloween party games can be fun for all ages and aren’t just for children. Adults and teens will also enjoy playing games and having a chance to act like kids again. Playing games is a good way for your guests to get to know each other and get in the party mood. Here are some games that are fun and easy to play at a Halloween party.
Halloween Trivia
Pass the Pumpkin
• Orange and black are Halloween colours because orange is associated with the Atumn harvest and black is associated with darkness and death.
This is a Halloween variation of the traditional “pass the orange” game. Instead of oranges, use small pumpkins if you can find some. Split your guests into two or more teams, with equal numbers in each team. Each team needs to stand in a circle and try to keep their hands behind their backs. It is then a race to be the first team to pass a pumpkin to each player in turn, going round the circle back to the beginning. The catch is that players have to use their chins to pass the pumpkin to each other, not their hands! If anyone drops a pumpkin on the floor, they need to pick to up again with their chin.
Musical Monsters This is a good game to play to liven up a party and get everyone dancing. It’s particularly funny when everyone is dressed up in their Halloween costumes. Play a CD of Halloween music, or your own compilation of Halloween themed songs. When the music stops everyone has to stop dancing straightaway and stand still. The last one to stop moving is out of the game. This goes on until there’s only one dancer left, who is the winner. This game is so easy to understand it’s great for even young kids, as well as adults.
Halloween Pictionary A do-it-yourself version of the popular board game can be a lot of fun for older kids, teenagers and adults. Before your party, plan ahead and brainstorm as many Halloween related words as you can eg. haunted house, broomstick, vampire etc. Write each word on a separate scrap of paper and mix all the words up in a suitable container – a cauldron, carved pumpkin or witch’s hat, for example. So that everyone can see the pictures being drawn, put up a chalkboard or whiteboard. Divide your guests into two or more teams. Each player then has a turn at drawing one of the words and their team mates have to guess correctly what the word is. The aim is to draw quickly and help your team to guess as many words as possible in a 60 second time limit. The next team then has a go at drawing and guessing, and the game continues until every player has had a go at drawing. Remember to keep score on each turn. The team that guessed the most words wins. 22 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
• Pumpkin decorating originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hollowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday. • Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings! • The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognised as human. • In the US Halloween is the 2nd most commercially successful holiday, with Christmas being the first. • Bobbing for apples is thought to have originated from the roman harvest festival that honors Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees. • Black cats were once believed to be witch’s familiars who protected their powers. • The fear of Halloween is known as Samhainopobia.

BackCare Awareness Week: October 5th-11th Back pain is a major health issue costing the country and the health service billions of pounds every year. Sickness absence currently costs the UK economy £15bn, musculoskeletal disorders are one of the leading causes of sickness absence.
B
ack pain can be the result of trauma, such as a fall or a car accident. But most often back pain is the result of an everyday activity done incorrectly — activities as common as twisting to reach or lift an object, sitting at a computer in the same position for hours, bending over to vacuum, and carrying shopping bags. Back Pain is the world’s Leading Cause of Human Disability Why back pain? Back pain is the now the world’s leading cause of human disability and, together with related musculoskeletal conditions, accounts for a quarter of UK sickness absence. But contrary to popular belief, back pain is not just an adult problem. Prevention begins at school! One in Four UK Kids Have Regular or Daily Back Pain New findings In 2015, BackCare surveyed 900 secondary school pupils (11-16 years) across the UK, revealing that two thirds of UK secondary pupils have experienced back pain. One in four UK secondary pupils suffers from back pain regularly or every day – this was higher amongst girls (27%) than boys (19%). Neck and shoulder pain were also very common, affecting a similar number. Heavy or Tiring School Bags – 10 Times More Back Pain School bag burden was found to be very common and strongly linked to back pain. Half of those surveyed said their school bag often or always felt tiring or too heavy for them. Back pain was ten times more common amongst pupils with heavy or tiring school bags.
Back Pain Almost Doubled with Hours Sitting Prolonged sitting Pupils were also asked to estimate the number of hours they spend sitting per day in the classroom, at meal times, whilst travelling, when doing homework and during their free time. The survey revealed that UK secondary pupils sit for an average of 9 hours per day. Back pain was almost doubled amongst pupils with higher than average sitting times. Studies have linked sitting for more than 4 hours per day with increased risk of diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer, depression and dementia. 24 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
The good news is that back pain prevention isn’t all that difficult, often requiring just a few adjustments that will soon become second nature. Exercise. One of the most important things you can do for back pain prevention is to get up and get moving. Why does exercise prevent back pain? Muscles are meant to move, if you aren’t in good shape, you’re more likely to hurt your back and feel pain when you do even simple movements, such as lifting your child from his cot. Another reason exercise prevents back pain is that exercise helps you keep your weight down — being overweight, especially around your stomach, can put added strain on your back. Eat right. If you maintain good eating habits, you not only will maintain a healthy weight, but you also will not put unnecessary stress on your body. A steady diet of excessively spicy or fast food can strain your nervous system, which is going to create back problems. Conversely, a healthy diet of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, dairy products, and whole grains will keep your digestive tract on track. Sleep sideways. You don’t want to sleep flat on your back. The best position for sleeping is on your side. If you must sleep on your stomach, put a pillow under your lower abdomen to help take stress off your back. Having a supportive mattress and pillow for your head are vital as well. Maintain proper posture. People sitting at their computer for seven or eight hours a day is keeping Physiotherapists business! People slouch over their computers and their telephones when they’re texting, and they don’t realize the damage they’re doing to their backs and the pain they could be causing. Be sure to work at an ergonomically correct workstation, both at the office and at home, and break up long periods in front of the computer with stretching exercises. If you practice good posture, you will maintain
the natural curves of your back and help keep it strong. Reduce stress. You probably don’t realise how much stress can impact your back health. Stress causes you to tense your muscles, and constant tension of this kind can cause back pain. Any activity that helps you reduce stress will help prevent back pain. Stress reduction activities can include yoga, meditation, deep breathing, tai chi etc. Quit smoking. It’s well known that smoking raises your risk for heart disease and cancer, including lung and colon cancers, but most people don’t realize that smoking also can be a cause of persistent back pain. Research also shows smoking can make existing back pain worse. It’s not entirely clear how smoking affects back health, but one possibility is that it narrows blood vessels. Narrowed blood vessels result in less oxygen and nutrients reaching the spine and, in turn, it becomes more susceptible to injury and slower to heal. National Spa Week
30th October – 3rd November National Spa week aims to raise awareness of the physical, mental and emotional benefits that regular spa visits provide. In the UK we see spaing as a ‘treat’ or luxury item where as in Europe it’s a regular part of a healthy, balanced life.
O
ur 21st century lives are fast paced, more digitally influenced, and busier than ever before. In the same way regular gym attendance keeps us physically fit, regular spa attendance is an effective way to help combat the long term effects of everyday stress that we have become accustomed to living with. From the 30th October – 5th November 2017, thousands of spas and salons across the UK are uniting to offer lots of exciting introductory offers and promotions on spa treatments so that more people can ‘give it a try’. Locally, The Grange Spa in Pointon will be working to promote the importance of wellbeing for everybody & mind, so why not go along and see what they have to offer. From evening twilight sessions to loyalty membership or corporate rewards.
Throughout National Spa Week they are offering the limited edition Take Rest package £150 per person which includes a full day use of spa facilities, glass of prosecco, Lincolnshire themed light lunch and the Take Rest Ritual – a top to toe wellness ritual to soothe your sole. There is a full programme throughout the week including talks and workshops including: A pop up event on Tuesday 31st; Thalgo will be onsite to carry out a skincare clinic with their Imetric machine, tickets are £10 per person. Nichole from Hummingbird Hypnotherapy will be visiting on the Saturday with her positivity workshop from 11am to 12.30pm for just £10 per person. Call 01778 440511 for more information or visit their website www.thegrangespa. co.uk
The benefits of regular spa attendance really can be felt by every body and every mind. The aim of National Spa Week is for more people to give it a try because it can have an important role to play in effective stress management and relaxation; something that we are not too good at in the UK. What Causes Acne? Acne is caused when tiny holes in the skin, known as hair follicles, become blocked.
S
ebaceous glands are tiny glands found near the surface of your skin. The glands are attached to hair follicles, which are small holes in your skin that an individual hair grows out of. Sebaceous glands lubricate the hair and the skin to stop it drying out. They do this by producing an oily substance called sebum. In acne, the glands begin to produce too much sebum. The excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and both substances form a plug in the follicle. If the plugged follicle is close to the surface of the skin, it bulges outwards, creating a whitehead. Alternatively, the plugged follicle can be open to the skin, creating a blackhead. Normally harmless bacteria that live on the skin can then contaminate and infect the plugged follicles, causing papules, pustules, nodules or cysts.
Testosterone Teenage acne is thought to be triggered by increased levels of a hormone called testosterone, which occurs during puberty. The hormone plays an important role in stimulating the growth and development of the penis and testicles in boys, and maintaining muscle and bone strength in girls. Acne in families Acne can run in families. If your parents had acne, it’s likely that you’ll also develop it. One study has found that if both your parents had acne, you’re more likely to get more severe acne at an early age. It also found that if one or both of your parents had adult acne, you’re more likely to get adult acne too. Acne in women More than 80% of cases of adult acne
occur in women. It’s thought that many cases of adult acne are caused by the changes in hormone levels that many women have at certain times. Other triggers Other possible triggers of an acne flare-up include: • some cosmetic products • certain medications • regularly wearing items that place pressure on an affected area of skin, such as a headband or backpack • smoking
Tackling anxiety The Problem: You often feel anxious, with negative thoughts and a racing heart. Frequently, your stomach feels queasy and occasionally you stop in the middle of the room and can’t remember what you’re doing. More and more, you find yourself in tears over the smallest things.
Mental Diagnosis: Anxiety. If the problem is ongoing, you could be diagnosed with GAD – generalised anxiety disorder. Your doctor will probably be keen to establish whether or not there has been any event in your life that may have triggered the psychological change, a death, break-up or another tragic event. If so, a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder may be made. Treatment for anxiety is wide ranging, from relaxation techniques and counselling to cognitive therapy and learning about what you are
28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
dealing with so you can problemsolve when anxiety arises. With anxiety, knowledge is definitely power. Tranquilisers or antidepressants may be recommended by your GP, but usually only as a temporary measure while you’re getting your life back on track with other therapies.
Physical Diagnosis: Anxiety can have a dietary cause. Inadequate intake of B vitamins and calcium can promote anxiety and magnesium deficiency can certainly contribute towards anxiety, particularly noticeable when added to PMS. Anxiety can also potentially contribute towards bladder infections and, interestingly, a bladder infection can, in turn, trigger anxiety. The biochemical reaction can also work on the gut and bowel, leading to symptoms of IBS, bloating and diarrhoea.

Weddings
Let’s Eat Cake! Why do we have a cake at a Wedding?
A
wedding cake is the traditional cake served at wedding receptions following dinner. In some parts of England, the wedding cake is served at a wedding breakfast, note that ‘wedding breakfast’ does not mean the meal will be held in the morning but at a time following the ceremony on the same day. In modern Western culture, the cake is usually on display and served to guests at the reception. Traditionally, wedding cakes were made to bring good luck to all guests and the couple. Modernly however, they are more of a centerpiece to the wedding and are not always even served to the guests. Some cakes are built with only a single edible tier for the bride and groom to share, but this is rare since the cost difference between fake and real tiers is minimal. Wedding cakes come in a variety of sizes, depending on the number of guests the cake will serve. Modern pastry chefs and cake designers use various ingredients and tools to create a cake that usually reflects the personalities of the couple. The History of The Wedding Cake The contemporary wedding cake has
30 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
grown out of several different ethnic traditions. One of the first traditions began in Ancient Rome where bread was broken over the bride’s head to bring good fortune to the couple. Wedding cake was originally a luxury item, and a sign of celebration and social status. The bigger the cake, the higher the social standing. Wedding cakes in England and early America were traditionally fruit cakes, often topped with marzipan and icing with tiers, Cutting the cake was an important part of the reception. White icing was also a symbol of money and social importance in Victorian times, so a white cake was highly desired. Today, many flavours and configurations are available in addition to the traditional all-white tiered cake. In details, the custom was for the groom to break the cake over the bride’s head to symbolise the end of the bride’s virginal state, ensure fertility, and the beginning of her husband’s power over her. Cakes were not yet invented at that time, so they mostly used a loaf of freshly baked of barley bread to do the tradition. The guests who also attended the wedding would take part by taking a piece of the broken wedding cake in hopes that they would also get good luck and fortune. The custom of breaking the cake was mostly necessary at that time since they believed it would benefit and provide good fortune to the couple’s future children. This ritual was mostly necessary for couples because this also affected the future of their children since only those children whose parents participated in the ritual were considered for a Roman high office. Brides mostly had to participate to ensure that her children would have good fortune In Medieval England cakes were stacked as high as possible for the bride and groom to kiss over. A successful kiss meant they were guaranteed a prosperous life together. From this the Croquembouche was created. The myth behind this cake tells of a Pastry chef, visiting Medieval England who witnessed their tradition of piling sweet rolls between the bride
and groom, which they attempted to kiss over without knocking them all down. The pastry chef then went back to France and piled sweet rolls up into a tower to make the first Croquembouche. The modern croquembouche is still very popular in France, where it is now common to place the croquembouche tower on a bed of cake and make it a top tier. This traditional French wedding cake is built from Profiteroles and given a halo of spun sugar. In 1703, Thomas Rich, a baker’s apprentice from Ludgate Hill, fell in love with his employer’s daughter and asked her to marry him. He wanted to make an extravagant cake, so he drew on St Bride’s Church, on Fleet Street in London for inspiration.
Modern adaptations Wedding cake toppers are models or art pieces that sit atop the cake. The most common type of cake topper features a representation of a bride and groom in wedding attire. This custom was dominant in US weddings in the 1950s, where it represented togetherness. Wedding toppers today are often figures that indicate shared hobbies or other passions, if they are used at all. Some are humorous, or may represent the couple’s hobby or occupation. Some couples use a piece of art which will be displayed in their home later, some couples skip the topper altogether or decorate the top tier with flowers. The traditional wedding cake is made from a rich fruitcake whose ingredients last without degrading. This allowed the top tier to be stored after the wedding, to be eaten at the christening of the first child. Many modern cakes now consist of flavors such as vanilla sponge, chocolate sponge or even carrot cake! Most cakes are between three and five tiers in height. Royal wedding cakes are among the more elaborate cakes seen. Most recently in 2011, Prince William and his bride Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, had a wedding cake that was eight-tiers.

Choosing a Headstone It is important to know how to choose headstones for graves before you purchase a monument for your loved one. Depending on the type of material you choose the headstone may last hundreds of years, which is why it is so critical to make the correct choice.
H
eadstones for graves are known by many other names. Some people refer to headstones as tombstones, others say gravestones or grave markers, but all of these terms refer to the same thing. A headstone is used to mark a grave. It is placed over the location where the casket of the deceased has been buried, and it is usually made of stone. As a marker, it is used to let the living know who was buried on that spot. Oftentimes, the birth date and the date of death are also written on the tombstone. Most families or loved ones of the deceased also include a short message or prayer in honor of their departed loved ones. Unless people have had to buy a headstone personally, they probably do not know that there is actually more to a headstone than just a stone marker. The following are important points to consider when choosing headstones for graves
yourself. Visit the cemetery and see if there are limitations on the headstone size and material. 2. Make sure you know the fees Cemeteries will typically charge a fee for installation. However, not all cemeteries will offer installation services. The company that you purchase the monument from may do the install for you, or can recommend someone who will complete the installation. It is also important to find out if the cemetery has maintenance fees. Many cemeteries will have ongoing fees that you should be aware of.
How To Choose Headstones For Graves
3. Choose the headstone material Although most headstones are typically made of stone, there are still different types of stone available. Granite, marble, limestone, sandstone, and slate are the most common types of stone used. Still, there are other materials used for the construction of headstones such as iron, wood and bronze.
1. Learn the cemetery restrictions Most cemeteries will have restrictions on what type of headstone you can use. The restrictions vary and some cemeteries can have size, material and design regulations. Your local monument companies should be familiar with the restrictions, but it is important that you speak to the cemetery
4. Choose the headstone shape There are a number of different types of headstones for graves and each one of these have their own appeal. The most common way to differentiate headstones is through the way of their orientation. One of the most used headstones for graves are those that lay flat on the ground, simply
referred to as flat headstones. Also known as ground-level headstones, these markers are just a couple of inches off the ground. There are some cases however, when this type of tombstone is raised more than a few inches off the ground and are thus called raised-top flat headstones. Other headstones stand tall from the ground, and are called upright headstones. This is also one of the most commonly chosen types of headstones because they are easier to see than the flat types. The choice of which headstone to use is dependent not only on the orientation of the markers and the material of the tombstone, but also on other important aspects such as the design and the form of the tombstone. Most forms and designs are used to symbolize certain values or meanings. A dove symbolises purity and love, while a lamb is a sign of innocence. The headstones for graves that people choose do not only mark the location and state the information about the person, but it also stands as a show of love and honor for the dearly departed. There are a lot of important points to consider when selecting headstones for graves. Your local cemetery or monument company will be able to answers most questions you have. It is important to do your research before selecting a headstone so that you choose the perfect monument to memorialise the life of your loved one.

Home & Garden
Make Your Home Cosy this Winter As the cold winter approaches, it becomes more enjoyable to spend time indoors, feeling warm and cosy. There are some great ways that you can make your home not only feel warm but actually make it warm. Now is the perfect time to make your home feel as cosy as possible.
T
his doesn’t mean making your house warm - instead, it’s all about making your house look and feel comfortable. Not only will this make it better when you have to spend more time inside, it can also help you to relax and put your feet up. Here are some simple way to achieve a lovely cosy home:
Get The Look Abstrac t Fur Thr ow, M&S
Add soft furnishings A big part of making a home cosy is making it as comfortable as possible. Adding soft furnishings such as cushions - to a room can help you achieve this. You can make a sofa or armchair extra soft with some added cushions, which can also be used to introduce colour to your room. You may also want to add some blankets and throws to a room, which can be used to wrap you and your family up on a cold night.
£89
Choose a warm scent Home fragrance can play a big part in how your house feels, with warm scents helping to make a room feel warm and cosy - even when the weather outside is awful! Spicy scents - such as our beautiful Orange Spice range - or those with a lovely depth to them, like our Sandalwood and Oud fragrance, can make a huge difference to how your room feels. You can use reed diffusers to add your fragrance to your home all day long, or candles to increase the cosy feeling with flickering light. Of course, you could use both together to ensure your home feels warm and inviting.

Soft lighting As well as candles - or a fireplace if you’re lucky enough to have one - creating a nice cosy light, you can use lamps to create a soft light in your home. This instantly creates a lovely feeling that can allow you to wind down and settle in against the cold. Use low-wattage bulbs to create a soft light and avoid using bright overhead lighting or naked bulbs, which can ruin the effect. Combine all of these with our tips to keep your home warm and you’ll create a lovely space that you won’t want to leave for the chilly outdoors this winter.

How to keep the elderly warm in winter
S
evere cold snaps can have dramatic effects on everyday life, especially for the elderly. Cold and wintry conditions can cause severe illness and, in the worst cases, people can die. By taking some simple precautions, most people can be prepared for the cold weather • Get a free seasonal flu jab. Not only is seasonal flu unpleasant, but it can also cause serious illnesses, such as pneumonia or bronchitis and in the worst cases, it can result in a stay in hospital, or even death. The elderly and those with long-term health problems are most at risk. Your ageing parent can get a free jab from the age of 65. They should contact their GP, or talk to their pharmacist • Try to avoid catching colds or flu. Colds and flu spread very easily. Encourage your ageing parent to always cover their nose and mouth with a tissue when you coughing or sneezing and encourage visitors and relatives to do the same. They should throw away used tissues as soon as possible and wash their hands regularly with soap and water, taking a hand sanitiser gel when they are out and about • Stock up on over-the-counter cough and cold remedies, so they have them to hand if they suddenly feel ill Heating your home effectively and safely. Some of these energy-saving tips may seem obvious, but they can make a big difference when it comes to reducing fuel bills By setting the heating to the right temperature, you can keep your home warm and lower your bills. The main living room
should be around 21°C (70°F), the bedroom should be 18°C (65°F) and the rest of the house at least 16°C (61°F). Set the heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you’ve gone to bed. If it’s very cold, set the heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up. If you can’t heat all the rooms, heat the living room throughout the day and the bedroom just before you go to bed. Remember to close curtains and shut doors to keep heat in the rooms you use most. Get the heating system checked regularly, and keep the home well ventilated. If you have open fires, make sure they are properly ventilated. Use safety guards and don’t hang washing near open flames. If you use a fire or heater in your bedroom at night, always keep a window and the door open Use electric blankets as instructed and get it tested every three years. Switch appliances (such as TVs and microwaves) off, rather than leaving them on standby. Do not use a gas cooker or oven to heat the home – it is inefficient and there is a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Keeping the heat in Insulating your home not only helps to keep you warm and healthy, but it will also help to keep heating costs down • Fit draught proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors • Make sure that the loft has at least 10–11 inches(270mm) of insulation
• Insulate wall cavities and hot water cylinder and pipes • Draw curtains at dusk to help keep the heat generated inside the rooms • Make sure that radiators are not obstructed by curtains or furniture Financial help to heat your home Winter Fuel Payment. This is a tax-free benefit to help pay for heating during winter. You could get between £100 and £300 tax-free to help pay your heating bills if you were born on or before 5 August 1953. This is known as a ‘Winter Fuel Payment’. Most payments are made automatically between November and December. You should get your money by 31 December. Visit www.gov.uk/winter-fuel-payment Warm Home Discount Scheme You could get £140 off your electricity bill for winter 2017 to 2018 under the Warm Home Discount Scheme. The money isn’t paid to you - it’s a one-off discount on your electricity bill, between October and March. To find out if you are eligible visit www. gov.uk/the-warm-home-discount-scheme Cold Weather Payment You may get a Cold Weather Payment if you’re getting certain benefits. You’ll get a payment if the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below for 7 consecutive days. You’ll get a payment of £25 for each 7 day period of very cold weather between 1 November and 31 March. For more information visit www.gov.uk/ cold-weather-payment Energy Company Obligation The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a government energy efficiency scheme in Great Britain to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty. To see if you are eligible please visit www. ofgem.gov.uk

Volvo V90 R-Design PROS ‘N’ CONS à Looks à Kit à Economy à Room à Hard Ride

olvo estates have come a long way since their ‘wardrobe on wheels’ image. We all knew they were safe and comfortable; they just weren’t sexy. That all changed some years ago, and the last V70 looked great; perhaps even better than its saloon sibling, the S80. Then in 2016, the V90 and the booted S90 came along; two stunning cars with more than a hint of sporting appeal woven into the luxury, ride comfort and space that Volvos always offer The models have been a success in the short time they’ve been out – but the V90 is the one that most people favour. As an estate car, it’s more practical, even though the Swedish car maker has made the load area slightly smaller than the previous V70’s. For those who like versatility and don’t want the ‘conservative’ estate car image, Volvo has recently put its R-Design stamp on the V90. This means you can still drive an estate car, but one that looks hunkered down and stimulating. Yes, stimulating – who’d have thought a Volvo could have that effect? The R-Design flavour has always given Volvos that extra something – it’s made the cars spicier to look at and hotter in the way they handle. The V90 R-Design is a genuine looker – a great piece of artwork all round. Its kerbside appeal is boosted even further, thanks to its 15mm lowered ride height, silver door mirrors, gloss black grille and flashy 18inch alloy wheels. The jazziness continues inside, with semielectrically operated leather and nubuck sports seats. There are also metal-effect inlays, a vivid LED driver’s display, sports pedals, and illuminated tread plates. My test car was fitted with the D4 engine, hooked up to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The D4 is a 2.0-litre

FAST FACTS (1.5 182PS i-VTEC Turbo Sport manual – as tested) turbo diesel unit delivering 190PS - a welljudged output for regular commuting. It’s quick enough for most palates, reaching 62mph in 8.5 seconds, but it is prudent, too. If you see over 60mpg from this engine, I wouldn’t be taken aback. The V90 is refreshing compared with its rear-wheel drive German equals. It’s driven by its front wheels, and is nimbler to wield. The Volvo feels sprightlier, thanks to the weight of the pedals and steering - and while this is no small vehicle, it feels far from overwhelming, due to how acquiescent it is. Because of the R-Design’s lowered, firmer suspension setup, the V90 R-Design will corner quickly without perceptible body lean. However, the drawback is that there’s no option to alter the suspension on the fly. Mind you, air suspension can be substituted when you buy the car new, although it will cost you £1,500 for the privilege. On the regular non-R-Design V90s you’re offered a more cushioned ride. But if you’re determined to go for a sporty estate, and don’t mind a lower, firmer system, then the stock V90 R-Design is an excellent choice. from the Japanese firm, and brings it right

into serious competition with hardcore rivals like Ford’s Focus and VW’s Golf. The way the tenth-generation Civic looks, feels, and goes means the opposition should be worried. Now we must wait for the diesel and the ultra-hot Type R to make their entrance. First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups

ndy White of Spalding Carpets set up in business on his own more by accident. After leaving school he worked with Ken Watkin on New Road in Spalding at “Watkin and Overton” in soft furnishings. When Ken was taken poorly he didn’t know if he was going to continue the business due to his health, after chatting with Ken Andy made the decision to start his own business and also sub contract so he could still do all Ken’s work. Andy can supply and fit or fit only, which ever your requirements. He offers a wide range of carpets, cushion flooring and carpet tiles to compliment your home. Andy feel he offers “old school values” and would treat your house as if it was his own, he is always curtious and prides himself on his manners and descent service.
