Well what a crazy few weeks it has been…I am now Mrs Hammond! Thank you for all the well wishes, we had a wonderful day on the beach with family and friends in Cornwall. Now it’s back to business - October for me is all about birthdays, and this year a family holiday too. Whilst may people hate the thought of winter, I love a clear, crisp frosty morning, bonfire night all wrapped up and the anticipation of, dare I say it, Christmas! So without wishing the year away, bring on the snow!

Appeal for Memorial at Zion During November there will be an opportunity to see research that has been carried out about the men that were killed during the 1st World War that are commemorated on a memorial at Zion Methodist Church. These men had a connection to Zion United Methodist Church that was in West Street, before the church moved to its present site in Brothertoft Road. The Church was on the site of the old Regal Cinema and now where the car park is, next to Oasis dentist. But help is needed to trace the families. If you know of any of these families or have a connection to any of the men mentioned they would love you to get in touch. They would especially like to trace any members of the families of these men. • Herbert Elisha and William Henry Garrill - sons of George and Charlotte Garrill of Duke Street, Boston • George Cross – son of George and Charlotte Cross of Frithville

Rolec Services help Boston & District Athletic Club to keep running The Boston and District Athletic Club has been saved from the brink of closure as a result of receiving help from a local business. Rolec Services, which employs over 100 people at its base in Ralph’s Lane, Frampton, stepped forward in the club’s hour of need to give it the significant shortterm funding and business expertise it needed to remain open. The Athletic Club, which was formed in the year 2000 and since then has helped hundreds of local people keep active, now needs other business to come forward and has a range of support

packages available. Peter Arnott, Development Officer of the Athletic Club, said: “It is absolutely fantastic that Rolec Services, a local business, has come to our aid when everything looked so bleak. “Thanks to Rolec we have been able to keep running for now - but without the company’s help it would have been a very different story.” Rolec’s Business Development Manager Bianca Orrey has also agreed to help the club by becoming a committee member. Local Links to Jobs Boston based recruitment agency Local Link recruitment have launched an intensive practical programme to help unemployed people in the Boston area gain the skills they need to find work. Following on from their Managing Director Iwona Lebiedowicz’s pioneering work in February 2012 running a training programme to help unemployed local youngsters, Local Link are partnering this year with Boston College and Boston Job Centre to run a sector based work academy for 20 unemployed delegates. The selected candidates will have an intensive training programme with Boston College aimed at making them more employable, including aspects such as interview skills and CV writing supported by Local Link’s HR Manager, Stephanie Dickens, followed by a period of work experience within Local Link culminating in a job interview.

Iwona, who is also a Governor at Boston College and supports charities such as Junior Chamber International and Young Enterprise programme as well as Business Language Champions, is fully committed to giving back to the community. “At Local Link one of our core business values is Ethical Trading. Part of that is our belief that everyone deserves the best opportunity to find fulfilling work. We are delighted to be able to use our experience and expertise to help local people gain the skills that will help them succeed in a competitive jobs market.”

Work starts on new affordable housing in Boston Work has started to redevelop one of the few derelict sites left in Boston into affordable housing for local people. The Blue Street development, on the site of the former Pilgrim Foods depot, will soon provide new homes for 41 families, including 33 for rent and eight for shared ownership (part-buy part-rent). After a great deal of work to clear the site, the start of the construction was celebrated on Wednesday (6 August) when Waterloo Housing Group board member Brian Burnett and Boston Borough Council’s housing, property and community portfolio holder Cllr Mike Gilbert, turned the first sod. The development will cost just over £5million and is receiving investment support of £160,000 from Boston Borough Council and £1million from the Homes

and Communities Agency. It is being built in two phases by D Brown Builders, with completion expected in autumn 2015. The Leader of Boston Borough Council, Cllr Peter Bedford, said: “This is yet another large disused site in Boston being returned to usefulness – providing much-needed and affordable modern homes. The other large derelict site has a new school under construction. These are just two signs among many that Boston is really going places.” Cllr Gilbert said: “The housing market in Boston suffers from restricted supply, high demand, high rents and some properties in poor condition. The relationship with Waterloo will help meet demand for accommodation for the people of Boston into the future.”

£2,000 prize draw for flood resilience works Mrs Jo Slade of Melbourne Terrace is the lucky winner of £2,000 worth of flood protection measures for her home. At a special flood event organised by Boston Borough Council held in Boston Market Place on Thursday, June 5, 73 people signed up for flood warnings, agreed to make personal flood plans and received their FREE door flood protection kits. All residents who signed up for flood warnings were entered into a draw to win £2,000 worth of flood protection measures for their home. Mrs Slade said “I hope I never have to witness the devastation of another flood in Boston but I’m grateful for the defences I will have put in place in my home if ever we should have another one.” The Mayor of Boston, Cllr Alison Austin was delighted to be asked to draw the winning ticket and said: “I welcome any initiative by Boston Borough Council to encourage people to sign up for flood warnings. The flood of 5 December has shown not only the importance of being signed up but also of heeding any such warnings. I urge residents in the most vulnerable locations to seek advice from the Council as to what measures they can take to protect their homes and contents in the event of any future flooding.” Kier Services Limited has been contracted by Boston Borough Council to carry out these necessary measures. Kier regional area manager, Pat Mollart, said: “We are delighted for Mrs

Slade on winning the prize draw. By the very nature of our work, carrying out repairs to council homes across the country, we touch the lives of thousands of people and strive to make a positive contribution to the communities in which we work.” Flood Resilience Advisor, Rachael McMahon, from the Environment Agency said: “Make the most of the free flood warning service that’s available to you. We may have been able to get a message to your home phone on 5 December, but you can register up to five different ways of being contacted. People are often out and about and would benefit by registering any mobile phones they have too. This is really easy to do, simply call Floodline on 0345 988 1188, or do it online www.gov.uk/ flood” The Environment Agency is still looking for more flood wardens in Boston. Please call Floodline if you would like more information about this voluntary role. It is also possible to complete a personal flood plan for your home to help you be more prepared for any future flooding. Hard copies are still available to collect from the council offices in West Street. You can also do this online at the Environment Agency’s website, or call Floodline for a copy to be sent to you.

Anthony Riley, Waterloo’s director of development and operations, was delighted that the development had received Government funding and praised Boston Borough Council for “opening the door” with its contribution. “This enabled us to get the project off the ground and provide muchneeded, quality affordable homes for local people.”

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston The council is making great progress in dealing with rogue landlords – those who put profit before people and house sometimes vulnerable people in poor accommodation. We have now set up a confidential hotline, so that callers can report their concerns, anonymously if they wish. The number to call is 01205 314333. Callers will be asked to record their concerns about a property, landlord or letting agent in the borough. They will need to give the address of the property, a brief account of the issues and, if known, the name of the landlord. Callers will not need to leave their own details, but it may prove useful for borough council housing officers should any additional information be required. Callers do not have to give this information, but if they choose to do so, it will be kept strictly confidential. There may be occasions when the information is shared with Rogue Landlord partners – the police and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority. The hotline is a part of the borough council’s Rogue Landlords initiative and information could be anything from a report of multiple occupancy – which may not be illegal, but can be easily checked by the council – through to serious risks to health through poor accommodation. This is an important part of our policy of dealing with landlords who fail to offer a good standard of accommodation that is properly maintained. There are many good landlords in Boston, who have nothing to fear from this. Sadly, there are some who have little regard for the wellbeing of their tenants and these are the ones we are targeting, and these are the ones we want people to call the hotline about. Houses that are multiple occupied should have a higher level of

management and safety aspects simply because facilities are being provided for lots of people. Any landlord or letting agent who knowingly runs an HMO without adhering to the regulations should be identified as rogue. Since we introduced our Rogue Landlords initiative significant improvements have been made to some of the worst properties. At the time of writing I am expecting the decision any day of the Secretary of State concerning the Quadrant application at Wyberton. This major development, for 500 new homes (20 per cent affordable housing), shops, leisure and commercial development and a new stadium for Boston Utd, was approved by the council’s planning committee members. The Secretary of State can let that decision stand or decide to consider the application and make a decision himself. I think the committee made a brave but correct decision to indicate its approval of one of the biggest developments ever to be put before them. Support for the scheme has already been indicated with granting of £4.75 million secured by Greater Lincolnshire LEP (Local Enterprise Partnership) from the Government’s Growth Deal. The successful bid is a major indication of support for the project from Government, reinforcing the planning committee’s decision. It is a right decision for the greater good of Boston and the borough. It will bring in much-needed new housing, leisure and commercial opportunities, lays an important foundation for a traffic relief road for Boston and secures the future of Boston Utd with the building of a new community stadium. We cannot afford to stand still and risk stagnation. The planning committee, quite rightly, has put in place a number of conditions to safeguard the amenities of residents.

Walking safely at night

Boston’s Community Policing teams are launching a three-strand crime prevention initiative aimed at reducing the three main property crimes that affect people the most in the town

S

ome of you will have probably read about the woman who was subjected to a sexually motivated attack in Liquorpond Street, Boston on the 16th August. The woman was walking along Liquorpond Street at 4:30am when she was attacked by an unknown male and dragged into some bushes. Fortunately her cries of help were heard by passers-by and the male ran off. This sort of offence is rare in Boston and people should not be unduly worried but if you follow this advice, you will greatly increase your safety when out at night.

When walking at night • Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. • Plan your route for safety, and walk with friends or a group whenever possible. • Use identified well-lighted and well-traveled routes. If you sense danger • Move away from the threat: Cross the street and increase your pace. • Join a group of people nearby, if a threatening situation seems imminent • Yell, scream, or make a commotion to attract other people. • Go to an open business. This summer my team has been focusing on Street

Drinking in the town centre which as we know is a major issue in Boston. Additional officers have been assigned to town centre foot patrols and we deal positively with any cases of street drinking. Although the problem still persists my team has noticed a significant reduction in street drinking which we are very keen to build on in time for the new legislation that will hopefully come in soon which will ban it outright. I am also pleased to report a significant drop in cycle thefts across the town and most noticeably around the town Centre. Cycle theft is a priority for my team and we work hard to reduce it and catch the thieves responsible, but we need your help by ensuring that you always padlock your bike or lock it away. Never leave it in the street unlocked or in your garden or drive because people will try and steal it because they can make money from it.

Breaking Bad The complete first season

My sister the vampire Sienna Mercer

The girl with all the gifts M R Carey

As the nights draw in, many of us turn to a good book to while away the evenings. It’s also a great time of year to catch up on ‘must-see’ television series on DVD. One member of library staff is currently enjoying ‘Breaking Bad’, the smash-hit American programme from a couple of years ago. Mild-mannered Chemistry teacher, Walter White, is diagnosed with cancer and, determined to provide for his family in the event of his death, he embarks on a life-changing series of events when he teams up with a former student, Jesse, to start their very own business in the back of a motorhome. All five series of this multi-award winning drama are available to loan from the library service and the end of every episode will leave you wanting more. Much like the ‘product’ that Walter and Jesse cook up…

For juniors try Sienna Mercer – My sister the vampire series. A very popular series it starts with ‘Switched’ - When Olivia Abbott moves to town, she’s excited to join the cheerleading team and make new friends. Then she meets Ivy Vega. At first, Ivy, pale and dressed all in black, looks like Olivia’s opposite. Then the girls look beyond the glittery pink blush and thick black eyeliner to discover they’re identical…identical twins!

Spooky Bus Roger Priddy I’ve plenty of scary suggestions to keep you entertained over this Halloween Month For the Babies and toddlers we have ‘Spooky Bus’ by Roger Priddy. A fun board book with an interactive sound button.

‘The girl with all the Gifts’ by M.R. Carey is a gripping apocalyptic tale. The novel starts through the eyes of a young girl Melanie, who knows she’s going to marry a prince when she grows up as her skin is as white as snow just like the girls in fairy tales. The guards put her into a wheelchair every day, straps around her legs, arms and throat. She jokes that she won’t bite. The guards never laugh. Keen photographer? Love improving your home? Maybe you’re a big music fan or the sporty type? There’s something for everyone in our selection of free digital magazines, available to download to your PC, Mac, smartphone or tablet. “We aim to cure”

uilt amongst the idyllic scenery on Burtey Fen Farm in Pinchbeck, the clinic started life as a humble bulb shed before it was transformed into a modern, custom built clinic with state of the art podiatry equipment. Once you’re sat in the treatment chair take a look out of the window and you will see open fields. Having spent twenty years working for the NHS, owner Yvette Mayo decided to set up on her own and offer her expertise to clients locally. She feels that there is a tangible need for her services: “There is no real provision for high quality foot care in the area.” She is joined by Jake Beech, a recent graduate who is brimming with the latest knowledge in foot care. Together they have they perfect partnership of knowledge and experience. They are also happy to share clients to ensure that you can always be seen quickly by the person who is best suited to your treatment needs. The clinic is Health Care & Professionals Council (HCPC) registered which means that they are regulated, giving you peace of mind as well as the knowledge that they are undertaking continuous professional development so will always be aware of improvements, changes and regulations regarding your treatment. The clinic is also currently going through the process to receive Gold Star Practice accreditation. Having set up on her own, the clinic experienced rapid growth in its first 2 and a half years, with Yvette having to make a quick decision to take on a member of staff after just one year. Most of the clinic’s new clients come from word of mouth and recommendation which Yvette is rightly proud of. When a new client calls in or calls for an appointment they receive expert advice and recommendations. Yvette’s simple ethos of “we aim to cure” is at the forefront of everything they do. The clinic’s main aim is to get patients cured and discharged rather than having to

have unnecessary return visits. As such they are always happy to hear from new clients. Yvette describes her days as “A good job to do. We bring comfort and a smile to people’s faces. How many jobs can say that?!” She also enjoys the variety of people who walk through her door: “We have patients between the ages of 4 and 104!” They also have a pretty even split between male and female patients. The children that come through the door are usually for gait assessment, insoles or that dreaded childhood menace, the verruca. Older patients have a wider set of needs and Yvette is keen to point out that domiciliary visits are available: “We believe in the importance of independent living and that is absolutely tied in with your mobility. By keeping your feet healthy you get to keep doing what you love to do.” The clinic also offers diabetic assessment as foot care for diabetics is particularly important. To keep your feet in tip top condition between appointments, the clinic sells a wide range of creams from heel to toe dealing with all conditions such as cold feet, hot feet and heel balms. As well as creams they stock a wide range of products such as insoles and nail treatments. They are also stockists for Forever Living Aloe Vera products. Basically, anything and everything to do with the foot is catered for! If you feel that you may benefit from podiatry then your first stop is to arrange an initial appointment. Yvette is keen to point out that it is not as expensive as you might think: “Assessment is free and your first treatment can cost as little as £25 with Jake or £30 with myself. We are competitively priced and offer good service and a high quality of aftercare. Rather than just treating a condition we look at foot health as a whole with the ultimate goal of treating and discharging you as soon as we can.” You can get in touch with the Lightfoot Clinic on 01775 719671 or by emailing info@thelightfootclinic.co.uk

Wedding Food and Entertainment We take a look at some of your options

Y

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

ou may just be at the beginning of your planning or be someway there with the venue booked and dress ordered. But what about the important tasks of deciding on food for the day and the mammoth task that is the reception and entertaining your guests throughout the day and on into the evening?

Wedding Food: Wedding food used to follow a very traditional formula – canapes followed by a sit-down 3 course meal (usually fish followed by meat followed by cake) and then a buffet in the evening. But today anything goes! Your food can follow a theme or be personal favourites of the bride and groom or even favourites from your childhood. Of course you can stick to traditional foods, or even put a modern twist on them. Provided your guests are well fed the rest really is up to you! Rather than traditional canapes to accompany the first drink (usually while the photos are being taken) how about miniatures? Mini Yorkshire pudding with roast beef, mini burgers and hotdogs or mini bagels with salmon and cream cheese will all go down well. Or how about finger sandwiches? You can offer

variety here with your choice of fillings. If you are getting married in summer you might prefer to hire a traditional ice cream van to keep your guests cool while they wait. For the wedding breakfast sit-down meal you can choose a fun theme such as Mexican or Italian food to run through your courses. If you like traditional fayre you can speak to your venue about producing a seasonal menu using meat and vegetables that will be readily available and therefore complement the time of year. Many brides opt to serve wedding cake as a dessert rather than having something sweet followed by cake which can be a bit much. Also, it’s nice to enjoy the cake before your guests are too full! This is also having an effect on the choice of cake. While a tiered cake will always be king at a wedding, cupcakes are still very popular and the new challenger to the throne is a cheese cake – 3 tiers of “cake” made from wheels of cheese allowing you to serve cheese and biscuits.

Weddings

Wedding Food and Entertainment In the evening you will find the greatest variation in food. Buffet is always a good choice as there is generally something for everyone to eat and a snack for those who have just enjoyed the wedding breakfast. Summer brides again may prefer a barbecue if the weather looks like it is going to be hot or the perennial favourite of a hog roast. And for those party animals who want to see the reception right through to the end then you might like to consider providing them with a bacon sandwich before they head home at the end of the evening. Most of all, remember that this is a day that is all about the two of you and a celebration of your love and commitment to each other and so try where you can to make choices that reflect who you are as a couple – and make sure that you like to eat all of the dishes you pick!

Wedding Entertainment:

If you have a theme for your wedding then your can tie your entertainment options into that quite neatly or you can pick and choose from your favourites to make it a day to remember!

Outdoors:

Blow the Budget!

The Blades Aerobatic Display – The Blades are amongst the most experienced display pilots in the UK. Add to the fact that all are former Red Arrows and it is little wonder that their air display is renowned world-wide and in demand. Book them for a private display.

How about a Village fete or country fair – set up a marquee (which will weather-proof you!), and fill it with all associated things such as bunting, flowers, and traditional games like a coconut shy. Giant Outdoor Games – giant Jenga always goes down a treat and Giant Connect 4 and Chess will keep guests busy and are especially popular when the photos are being taken! Fairground stalls and food – think hook a duck, hoop-la, hot dogs, candy floss and popcorn. Rodeo Bull – Perhaps one for after the photos! Make sure you have pen and paper alongside your timer so you can announce who stayed on longest at the end of the day.

For the Wedding Breakfast:

While the wedding breakfast is in full swing you may like to consider the following, wandering around between the tables: Caricaturist – to catch the fun side of you. Table top magician – some sleight of hand and illusions to keep you guessing, a magician is always a popular choice. Celebrity lookalikes – how about injecting a bit of Hollywood glamour into your wedding by hiring celebrity lookalikes ranging from movie star lookalikes to members of the Royal Family or even David Beckham! You can also hire

20 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

fake paparazzi for a red carpet feel. Children’s Entertainers – another favourite, keeping the children entertained helps to ensure that parents can also enjoy themselves. Alternative Entertainers such as living statues, living tables, stilt walkers, fire breathers and singing waiters. Whilst not necessarily interactive in the way a magician is they are still entertainment and something that will stick in the minds of your guests for years to come.

Evening Activities:

Bands and discos are the norm but what about a cocktail pianist, string quartet, solo guitarist or harpist? Stargazing on large blankets and beanbags – an easy one to organise and execute but on a clear night the results can be stunning. Las Vegas style gambling tables, slots and showgirls – for keeping your guests busy literally all evening. Cocktail mixers on hand to provide themed and bespoke cocktails for your guests – you could create your own cocktails in advance and name them after important aspects of your big day. There is also the opportunity for your guests to request their own bespoke drink. Chocolate Fountain – let’s face it, when has ever having a chocolate fountain not been a crowd pleaser?! Ice Sculpture / Vodka Luge – a beautiful touch and not something you have to clear away afterwards! Tasty Treats Table – cakes and sweets. With making your own sweets and baking becoming increasingly popular brides are turning their hand to providing some of the goodies from their own kitchens. Think bon bons, cupcakes, biscuits, macaroons, meringues and Turkish delight. Photo booth and dressing up box – let your guests’ imaginations run wild as they rifle through the dressing up box before giving you their best pose. Great keepsakes. Jukebox – choose your own music or invite your guests to submit requests to ensure that at any point there is someone on the dance floor. Firework Display – a perfect way to end the evening.

Brands available include Miele, Bosch, Siemens, Neff, Zanussi, Hotpoint, Indesit and many more. Our policy is to offer as broad a choice as possible – we have over 100 fridges and freezers, over 70 washing machines, dryers and dishwashers and 30 microwaves. We are so proud of our stock that we challenge any dealer within 50 miles to have more products on display. Behind The Name

Tate’s Fish & Chips Simply Boston’s visit for lunch!

AWARD WINNING FISH RESTAURANT

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

W

hen the Simply Boston team first sat down to decide on a list of longestablished businesses in the town to include in our ‘Behind the Name” series, Tate’s Fish and Chips was at the top of the list. An historical piece is all very well and good but we thought it would be more fun to go and have our lunch there to experience it for ourselves! Tate’s sum themselves up beautifully in their menu. In their own words they say: “There has been a fish restaurant on this site since the 10th October 1903. Subsequently Tate’s was founded in 1959. Under the family’s stewardship Tate’s has become well known for quality fish and chips and has developed into the award winning fish restaurant that is so loved today. To this day Tate’s remains a family business and we take great pride in the quality of our food and excellent service that is provided by our friendly staff ” A glance at Tate’s page on Trip Advisor shows very quickly that the Fish and Chip shop is held in very high regard, not just by the locals but by people who travel to Boston specifically to pay them a visit. There is even a review on there from a couple who travel from Skegness for Tate’s – high praise indeed when people travel from a seaside town with its fair share of chippies! The thing we love about Tate’s is that it is a good old fashioned chip shop! The layout and décor is exactly what you would expect and despite the fact that it was very busy, we weren’t sat long before someone came to take our order. We ordered fish and chips all round and a team member’s daughter (an honorary member of Simply Boston for the day!) sampled sausage and chips from the Children’s menu. The choice on the menu is huge. Aside from the choice of fish (cod, haddock, plaice, skate, scampi and fishcake) there are also sections covering chicken, vegetarian, specials (such as chilli, tuna pasta back and chicken tikka masala), burgers, traditional pies, jacket potatoes and salads. You can also take your pick from extras such as bread and butter, beans, peas and gravy. There are a range of beverages from tea and coffee to soft drinks and milkshakes. And should you find you have room you can take your pick from the dessert

menu which is made up of classics such as sundaes, jam sponge and custard and ice cream. The Children’s menu is a choice of meal including ice cream, a fizzy drink or milkshake and a lollipop. Not bad for only £3.70. We were served promptly and the staff were friendly. Our food arrived quickly and had been freshly cooked. I have to admit there quite a bit of cross-plate dipping as everyone tried out the peas and curry sauce. The fish was cooked beautifully and the chips were proper ‘chip shop chips’ without being greasy. Due to the portion sizes being as large as they were we were unable to take advantage of the dessert menu but we unanimously decided that would be for another visit! If you are in town then you can find Tate’s at 4&6 New Street Boston.

Motoring

Volvo S60 Volvo has never had the same appeal as its German executive cousins. It has never looked as aggressive as Audi, nor as brutal as BMW or as mean as Mercedes-Benz. But that is a good thing

Y

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY ou see, the Swedish marque does things its own way and that’s at the very heart of why motorists opt for Volvo – even though they could, for the same money, afford something a

little sexier. Take the S60; it’s very much a thinking man’s car. And that’s not to say that German motors don’t attract intelligent people. It offers some of the most restful, supportive and sumptuous seats on the automotive market. Chairs you can imagine a college professor sinking into before lighting his pipe and mulling over the day’s events. It’s the kind of car he’ll then cruise back home in while listening to Classic FM. Do you see where I’m going here? The S60 is by no means boring though; it can still satisfy your pleasure sensors. Let’s face it, Scandinavian design is generally pleasing. This is evident in the redesigned interior and exterior of the latest S60. Step inside, and materials, such as wood and leather and the easy-to-use controls, contribute to an ‘in-command’ driving experience. The overall effect is warm and cosy, like being in a Swedish house on a cold night. The car’s colour themes correspond beautifully with the backlit white controls in the dash and elsewhere in the vehicle. On the outside, the S60’s road presence has been increased by a new front design. The more focused and determined-looking headlamps help create an expressive face. The car’s horizontal lines at both the front and rear have been emphasised. Together with details such as a wider grille, daylight running lights 28 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

and LED tail lamps, they give the S60 a handsome, road-hugging presence. The Volvo saloon has a beauty that appears rooted in the natural world. The clean surfaces and contours give it a very classy feel. Enhancements for the S60 include ‘Sensus’. This is the name Volvo uses for all its HMI (Human Machine Interface) functionality and the all-new Sensus Connected Touch accessory is the latest addition. It enables connectivity and Internet in the car and turns the seven-inch display into a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen that can be used even when wearing gloves - a world first in cars and handy in winter. Connection is made either via a car-mounted 3G/4G dongle or your mobile phone. It allows you access to full Internet browsing (except when driving), Internet streaming of music, on-line Google Map and Search, weather information, an App Store for new functions and updates as well as a Volvo service locator. It is also possible to share a WiFi network with everyone in the car. Volvo is certainly pushing at the technological boundaries now – and that’s including one very important area of motoring: fuel efficiency. The fuel consumption of the S60 D2 diesel, on test here with a manual gearbox, has been improved to a class-leading 72.4 mpg, translating into CO2 emissions of only 103 g/km. With environmental credentials like these, any selfrespecting, Volvo driving, college professor will have to put his pipe out now.
