News Health Walks
Lincolnshire Co-op coordinate and support a network of health walks across the county. There are more than 60 regular, volunteer-run health walks across Lincolnshire’s seven districts, that all come under the national Ramblers Walking for Health scheme. The free walks can help boost your fitness and wellbeing, however you can gain so much more - learning about your local area, meeting new friends and improving your mental wellbeing. The walks are led by friendly, specially trained volunteers who are on hand to provide encouragement and support. Discover the great outdoors with walks in the Lincolnshire countryside or strolls through local beauty spots. What is a health walk? All walks are free of charge and can last between 30 and 90 minutes. The routes start and finish at the same location. They give you a chance to learn about your local area and its wildlife, meet new friends and boost your mental wellbeing. The walks are very sociable and after most of them there is the chance for a chat and a cup of tea in a nearby café.

No plans to downsize for majority of over-55s
A recent survey by Nationwide Building Society reveals that only a third of over-55s plan to move to a smaller property in retirement. Just 36% of the 2006 adults aged 55 or over said that downsizing was an option, while more than two-fifths (43%) said that they never plan to move again. The survey found that needing the space was the main reason for 49% of respondents’ decision not to move, with the need to host family, store a lifetime’s worth of possessions and even room to pursue their hobbies among the reasons given. Furthermore, 43% of the over-55s polled revealed that where they’d put down roots was important and that they didn’t want to leave their home location, while 18% said that being based near family was a good reason to stay. Who wants to downsize? For those who said that they would consider downsizing, the majority (56%) admitted that this was because a smaller house could be more easily managed. However, 73% of respondents said that if they could stay in their present home, they would, while over a fifth (22%) say that they will be
relying on family to help them out with maintaining the property. Jason Hurwood, Nationwide’s director of home propositions, said: “The perception that all older people want to downsize to much smaller properties is outdated and cliched. As the research shows, people aged 55 and above are putting off the traditional downsizing house move, with space being very much in demand for a range of reasons – from entertaining friends and family to allowing them to keep and store valuable keepsakes and belongings. However, remaining in a larger property may have financial implications in later life, from mortgages to maintenance.” With many retirees being property rich and cash poor, planning for the additional costs that may be needed is essential. Later Life Lending options are becoming more in demand as we are seeing more demand from older people to realise money through their homes – from unlocking the value to fix long-standing maintenance issues, from creating new space to updating tired rooms or from helping adapt the property for old age to taking their mortgage into retirement.
UK Pension Boost Retirees in receipt of the state pension are in line for a 4% increase next year thanks to the Government’s gold-plated protections. Since 2010, the “triple lock” means that the amount received by state pensioners, currently £168.60 a week, rises each year by either 2.5pc, the rate of inflation or wage growth – whichever is highest. The inflation figures used are for the year to September, due to be announced anytime.
Pensions firm Aegon said the current rate of wage growth means payouts can be expected to increase by 4% from April next year. This would bring payments for someone with a full national insurance record to £175.35 a week. Since 2010, the amount received from the state by a single person has grown by almost a third. The expected rise would be the highest since 2012, when inflation was 5.2%.
Taking on the fraudsters Criminals stole over £503 million through fraud and scams in the first six months of this year. Over £145m of which was down to bank transfer frauds (also known as push payment scams), where criminals dupe customers into making a payment to a fraudulent account. It can all happen via a simple phone call, text message or email, but the consequences can be severe. These banking fraudsters are becoming increasingly professional, frequently using a tactic known as social engineering to manipulate people into divulging their personal or financial details or transferring money. A typical ploy might be impersonating trusted organisations – such as a bank, the
police, a utility company or a government department. The criminal will call, text and email, to try to trick their victim into acting. Often they will have done their homework first, so can they quote information about their target in a bid to appear genuine. Cover stories used by banking scammers can vary widely. They might pose as a member of bank staff or a police officer and claim they have spotted fraud and that money needs to be transferred to a ‘safe account’. They might offer tempting deals online for goods that don’t actually exist, email a fake invoice to a business or cold-call with a fraudulent investment opportunity.
Stop and think about the credibility of the call One common thing the fraudsters use is pressure. “Act now or your money is at risk”. “Invest now to secure a great deal”. “Update your details now or your account will be closed”. It’s all an attempt to panic people into responding. And when people panic, their normal, rational judgement can go out the window. That’s where the Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign comes in. The campaign urges everyone to stop and think whenever they get a call, text or email out of the blue asking for their personal or financial details, or to transfer money. Even if they say they’re from the bank or the police, it’s still important to take a moment to reflect and step back from the situation. As a nation, we’re all, understandably, trusting. So, it’s important to take control and remember that it’s fine to refuse requests for personal information. Just hang up the phone, delete the email and don’t reply to the text message.

Health
Body Mass Index is probably best known in its abbreviated form, BMI. This is not to be confused with PPI, which has been responsible for what feels like a ceaseless bombardment of adverts and unwanted phone calls over the past few years. On a serious note though, a high BMI can cause more complications than simply needing to buy bigger trousers. Type 2 diabetes, heart conditions, strain on joints, breathing problems are all concerns that come with a BMI that is too high.

takes a lot more than a trip to an optician to see if you need stronger specs – but this is a GREAT place to start (although you may be just a bit too old to get a sticker for sitting nicely!). According to rnib.org.uk, there are some conditions that can cause you to lose your vision without displaying any symptoms. But an optician is trained to spot these, and can get you the right help to save your sight. An eye test can discover signs of diabetes, glaucoma and high blood pressure, for example. Grandparent Days Out
Railway Days
For a fantastic day out with your grandchildren why not try a railway day? These unique adventures come highly recommended! Read on to find out how to celebrate the golden age of steam (and the fast-approaching festive season) with your family – and in style!
L
iving in this lovely area we are really lucky, because there are some wonderful relics from the days of the steam engine just a relatively short and rewarding drive away. And a ride on the train itself is only part of a great day out offered at these super stations. Nene Valley Railway is located just outside Peterborough. As well as a beautiful station to explore there is a children’s play area, places for picnics (or you can enjoy the treats on offer at the station café) and a workshop to view. This railway has several places to board too. Most visitors start their day at the railway’s Wansford or Peterborough stations. Between this there is Ferry Meadows (disembark at Overton Station) which is a great place to occupy the grandkids with parks and water sports, as well as scenic walks. Running between Dereham and Wymondham Abbey, the Mid-Norfolk Railway offers heritage trips through the heart of Norfolk via steam or 1950s diesel (depending on your chosen date). It also hosts a number
22 Your Time | Autumn 2019
of fun events throughout the year, including a 1940s weekend, which is a great way to bring history to life for the grandkids. Wells and Walsingham Light Railway travels between the pretty coastal town of Wells Next The Sea, which has super shops and seaside fun, and the famous village of Walsingham, recognised for its religious shrines and Abbey. This little gems also boasts a café, gift shop, picnic area and crazy croquet, as well as a craft and art shop. Journeys on these trains also offer the chance to have a sit down and a glorious, guilt-free rest for their duration, before you disembark and the action starts again. Grandchildren seem to have endless amounts of energy somehow! Your trip will offer delightful views across a variety of stunning scenery. Plus, as the season to be cheerful chugs ever closer, these railways cater for tremendous Christmas treats… Nene Valley Railway offers Santa Steam packages which include a return trip along the
tracks, plenty of refreshments for adults and children, and a chat with the guest of honour – Santa himself. Mid-Norfolk Railway runs The Polar Express train ride, which recreates the classic festive film of the same name. The tale is brought to life by sights, sounds and a sprinkling of festive magic. Be sure to book quickly, because these amazing experiences sell fast. Wells and Walsingham Light Railway gets into the seasonal spirit by running trains on selected December dates before the big day itself. Booking is not required to ride. The seaside is such a special place in the winter months and a journey on this treasure of the tracks would be the icing on the cake. Take it from me, it is well worth offering to look after the grandchildren for the day (under the guise of giving mum and dad a rest) and treating them (and yourselves!) to one of these super steam experiences. In all honestly, my husband and I enjoy our annual Santa train rides as much as our kids!

Finding Love
Losing a life partner is one of the saddest events we can imagine. Ultimately, there are no words to express the absolute sorrow and sense of emptiness swelling in the very core of the one they leave behind. Grief is different in every single person and while you will never, ever forget them, it may be that, one day, you will feel you wish to find a companion to feature in your future. Of course, no one will replace your partner – but the key is, you wouldn’t want them to. In much the same way, nor would we want to (or even try to) replace a new partner’s spouse. Retired
It’s Your Time
And Learning How many times have you recently exclaimed; ‘well I didn’t know that! I’ve learnt something today!’? Probably quite a few. It seems that we never stop learning – whether on purpose or by accident! Retirement is a great time to start achieving any long-held educational ambitions which have been put on the back-burner because of work, family and all those other commitments that keep us busy.
S
o, what is it that you have always wanted to learn? Many people wish they could play an instrument. If this sounds like you, now is the time to take up piano, guitar, or whatever you have always wanted to get a tune out of. There are local music teachers and groups who will be happy to help. Practice makes perfect, and in retirement you can dedicate time to learning your ideal instrument. Being able to speak another language is also on many people’s lists. Courses are available online for example. Trés bien! Now is the ideal time to start securing all those skills you have always wanted and admired in others. Ever said; ‘I wish I could do that’? Now you can! Learning to play a sport, to cook, taking dancing lessons, painting classes, learning to swim, to fly a plane, to ride a bike - it is never too late! Take it from someone who
has recently taken up hockey! And there are always experts ready and waiting to teach you. Your plans could be as simple as looking up the meaning of a new word when reading a book (obstreperous anyone?!) or as admirable as achieving letters after your name. Many local groups host speaker evenings, when an expert on a particular topic gives an interesting talk. Noticeboards and word of mouth are great ways of getting to know what’s going on. Your local library will be a great place to find out about educational activities, and may even host some itself. Plus, the reference section will be free to use! U3A (University Of The Third Age) is open to those who are retired or semi-retired. According to its website at u3a.org.uk, members believe ‘learning is its own reward’. There are groups across the country, including locally, where members can meet regularly to
enjoy learning from each other and also from guest speakers. Sounds good? How about taking your studies a step further? Studying at university and college isn’t just for those in their teens and twenties. If you have a long-held ambition to learn at a higher level, now could be your chance. Working for a degree during your retirement means you have time to allocate to your studies and to reading all the set texts for your chosen course without rushing – savouring and absorbing every word. Will you even choose to move to a university city, or maybe look into that bastion of distance learning, The Open University, which offers scores of courses? It could be that retiring from one career is the gateway to training for the one you have always wanted. Now you have spare time to start learning and training, it is your time to follow your dreams.

Christmas Meals
And Alternative Ideas
Just the two of you at Christmas? Perhaps this is how life has panned out this year, or maybe it is on purpose, after too many years of stressful seasonal family shenanigans (don’t panic – we won’t tell!). Whatever the reason you are celebrating Christmas as a couple, Your Time will help you have a super one together. Enjoying the big day as a pair can be as low-key as you like. It could be as simple as boycotting the traditional turkey and celebrating with a nice joint of beef from your butcher. Fish fingers on the 25th? No problem! Why not order in cakes or desserts made by local baking specialists? No sharing sweets with a houseful, no squabbling over the remote control – bliss! If the idea of having no washing-up appeals to you, enjoying your Christmas meal out might be a nice idea. Turkey and all the trimmings, plus other sumptuous selections will be available at many of your favourite places to eat – near and far. Imagine a Christmas dinner in which you don’t need to chop carrots or clear away. In fact, you only have one job to do – get your table for two booked! Many hotels offer exceptional food and reasonable room rates in the weeks before and after the Christmas period, as well as the day itself. Or how about a getaway over the big three days – Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day? Imagine roaring log fires, the fresh scent of real pine trees, and the sight of twinkling fairy lights. This could be the one year you actually want to get snowed in! Now is the time to eat, drink and be merry on your own terms - it certainly is the season to be jolly as a twosome! With this in mind, how about a trip to a Christmas market or two, in this country or beyond? Many UK cities offer fantastic festive markets with 30 Your Time | Autumn 2019
phenomenal food, great gifts, even ice-skating rinks – and a hefty dose of seasonal cheer. Close your eyes - can’t you almost smell the spices mingling with scents of mulled wine, feel rich hot chocolate warming you against the nip of the cold, and hear the thrum of the crowd over a street organ playing seasonal songs? How about having a chat with a travel agent about enjoying your Christmas as a couple abroad? Salzburg, Prague and Vienna are famed for their festive markets. How about Iceland or New York for a truly memorable experience? Of course, you don’t have to celebrate your yule in cooler climes. Winter sun is a speciality in the Canaries, or, to push the boat out, Barbados, Dubai or the Maldives, to name but a few exotic locations that are just the job for two travelling together. Have you considered a Christmas cruise? You can celebrate the big day at sea! Closer to home, pantomimes and cinemas often stop only on Christmas Day, and are for all to enjoy – young and young at heart. If it is just the two of you this year, embrace the chance to start new traditions. Excited sleepless children and early starts, assembling new toys, stealing batteries from various household devices to power them – you’ve been there, done that. Now it’s time to do as you please. It’s your time.

Mans‘ Be Dog Ownership
As far as I’m aware, my dog cannot speak. Which is a good job, really. Because he knows the best and worst of me. I tell him all my secrets, mistakes, triumphs and troubles. It’s true what they say – a problem shared is a problem halved. And after a chat with my canine companion, it’s often a problem solved. A dog doesn’t interrupt. They don’t judge, just listen. What bliss to have such a buddy.
A

If your children have flown the nest, or don’t quite rely on mum and dad like they used to – and you miss those days, getting a dog could be just the job. All those things we are too busy to notice become beautiful when we are holding the lead. Dogs stop to sniff, and their humans stop to stare at their surroundings. There’s not even an excuse for getting cabin fever on a rainy day. Dogs are waterproof! It doesn’t need to just be you and your dog though. Another reason that putting in the miles is excellent for mental wellbeing is the people you meet. Walkies are a chance to chat
Dogs don‘t come with instruction manuals, but as a rule, a walk or two each day, a tummy full of high quality food (plus the odd treat), a soft bed, bowls of fresh water, and lots of love and company are standard needs of those with wet noses. Pretty much the same as humans, then! around a dog can ease stress. Exercise releases happy hormones (endorphins) and being out in the open is excellent for the mind and body, making dogs and walkies pretty magical medicine. According to Bupa, taking your dog out for a stroll can be an excellent way of hitting recommended weekly activity targets. And if you have a hound, you are probably moving more than those without one. A rover is a reason to get out of the house. These four-legged balls of fur, wags and woofs really do sound like miracle workers, don’t they!? Their barky benefits are farreaching for the young and not quite as young. If you have grandchildren, they can benefit enormously from a canine chum. What better
way of getting your youngster away from their screens than a saunter around your home streets with your doggo? Plus, reading to a dog is recommended, because, as with our own adult problems, they simply listen and don’t point out faults. According to thekennelclub.org.uk, sharing a book with a dog helps children with their reading skills as well as with their self-esteem and behaviour. Every day can be a school day – even at Grandma and Grandad’s house! Our Labrador, Otis, absolutely loves listening to bedtime stories, and is currently enjoying Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince. An excuse to explore unchartered territory, return to your favourite spots, and taking a trip to the seaside whatever the weather – it’s all in a day’s work for a dog. So many pubs and restaurants along the coastline (and inland too!) welcome waggly tails. Bowls of water are on the house! And you’ll be amazed how many have dog treats behind the bar to make them feel even more welcome. If you’re on your own, a dog is not only good company for a day out or a pub meal – it can also give you confidence to leave the house in the first place. Were there particular places you loved to visit with your children? Now they are grown, they may not want to return to them with you – but a dog will. So, what does owning a dog involve? Well, just like us humans, each is an individual with their own needs. Breed makes a difference, as does age. An adopted elder dog is more likely (although not guaranteed!) to be
est Friend more docile than a puppy. Of course, if you’re pondering getting some paws, research is vital. There is a wealth of advice out there. Staff at pet supply stores will be very knowledgeable and happy to help. Having a word with a dog walker about their poochy pride and joy is also a great idea. Much like grandparents talking about their grandchildren, we dog owners could chat about out canines all day. There will be food bills, vets’ fees, even what to do when you go away to consider. There are some great destinations within driving distance in this country that are doggy paradise, but if you like your holidays abroad, boarding kennels and professional dog-sitting services will be on your list of things to look at. From first-hand experience, even the size of your
car is a consideration (or, indeed, the size of your house!). Pet insurance, leads, collars, cosy baskets, toys, training and treats too. Dogs don’t come with instruction manuals, but as a rule, a walk or two each day, a tummy full of high-quality food (plus the odd treat), a soft bed, bowls of fresh water, and lots of love and
company are standard needs of those with wet noses. Pretty much the same as humans, then! Few things are more relaxing and heartwarming than a dog curling up next to you as you both take a well-earned rest, be that a five-minute sit down or settling down to sleep. The desire to look after your faithful friend and love them like they love you are powerful motivators. Even if it is a struggle to care for ourselves some days, a dog will communicate their needs perfectly well, and if they are ready for walkies, you will know about it. And because of that bond between hound and human, even if we are struggling to put one foot in front of the other, we push ourselves, and we do it for our dog. And with all the physical and mental benefits that walking with a waggy tail bring, there is a high chance your spirits will be lifted as a result. Dogs truly are mans’ best friend.

MoneyMatters
Equity Release Equity release allows those aged 55 or more to access money from the value of their home, either as a lump sum or smaller amounts, without having to make monthly repayments (depending on the product you have) or moving out. By making your home work for you, you can release cash to help with the cost of living in your retirement.
E
quity release is a very big decision. It not only needs careful thinking about on the part of the homeowners or owner, and even their families, but will also require the help of a fully qualified and experienced equity release expert. They will assess your situation and advise accordingly. Equity release is a really tricky thing, so you must be sure to seek help from a professional. To give a brief outline of the process, there are two main types of equity release. There is a lifetime mortgage, which is the most common, and a home reversion plan. With a lifetime mortgage (available to those aged 55 and over) you borrow money secured against your home. The idea is that this mortgage will be repaid by your estate on your death or permanent move into residential care. In a home reversion plan (available to those aged 65 and over) the money comes from selling all or some of your home to a home reversion product provider. Again, you will still live in it until you die or are taken into permanent residential care. There are certain criteria that those taking out both these types of equity release must fulfil, including the home in question must be in a good state of repair and over a certain value. Having family living at home can cause complications if you wish to follow 34 Your Time | Autumn 2019
the path of equity release. As a brief guide, ageuk.org. uk lists advantages of equity release including getting a tax-free lump sum and/or smaller regular payments which can help with the cost of living. Equity release is also transferable if you move, providing your new home is suitable under criteria at the time. But there are serious disadvantages too. The charity explains that receiving cash from your home may reduce your entitlement to some meanstested benefits both now and later. The charity also states that the value of your estate (this means everything you own including money, investments, property and possessions) is reduced by equity release. Therefore people named as beneficiaries in you will, will be in
line for less. If you type ‘equity release’ into an internet search engine you will see a lot of results! The good news is that the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is the regulatory body and oversees all firms advertising and selling equity release products. Also keeping things in check is the Equity Release Council, whose members follow a voluntary code of conduct, including guaranteeing you will never owe more than your house is worth when the time comes to sell. Be sure to select a product from one of its members. The FCA authorises specialist equity release advisers and providers – and it is vital you deal only with these people if equity release is something you wish to consider.

Mobile Data Remember the days when mobile phones were massive, cumbersome devices used for making calls and little else? Mobiles are used for so much more these days – and thankfully they are a great deal smaller and sleeker! In fact, taking calls and sending texts are often secondary features of phones. It is all about the camera and capacity for using the internet.
B
rowsing websites, social media, watching films and listening to music are all not only possibilities with phones today – they are the norm! To enjoy all this internet activity on your mobile, you need a data allowance, which will be part of your monthly phone contract, sim only deal or pay-as-you-go offer. Your data allowance is usually measured in GB (we mostly say ‘gig’) which stands for gigabytes, or in MB which stands for megabytes. Basically, 500MB is half a GB. You start to eat into your data allowance whenever you access the internet on your phone and you are NOT connected to wi-fi. This is why coffee shops advertising free wi-fi can be quite a clever place to stop for a pot of tea or a fancy brew, because if you log in to their wi-fi you will be able to use the internet for free while enjoying a cuppa. Some contracts offer mindboggling
amounts of data - unlimited in some cases, especially for the newer, higher-end devices. Of course, the more data you have in your deal, the more money it will cost. So how much do you actually need? Not as much as you’d think according to moneysavingexpert. com, whose 2018 poll revealed around twothirds of those asked how much data they used via their 3G or 4G signal (not via their wifi) found it was less than 3GB per month. And the survey also found that older people used less data. This may not surprise you, seeing as younger people do appear to be constantly glued to their phones! How much data is needed to do what? Well, if you are streaming (watching or listening to something on the internet in real-time – not that you have previously downloaded) music, films, programmes or a sports event for example, this is how you will use most data. Up to 3GB for 60 minutes of Netflix according
to which.co.uk. An hour scrolling through the web will use about 26MB of your allowance, however. Which.co.uk suggests that 1.5MB is the equivalent of sending 100 emails without attachments. A quarter of an hour of Facebook browsing uses up 5MB, and 1.1GB would be used by streaming a BBC iPlayer show in HD (high definition) for an hour. As you can see, streaming really can gobble up those gig! We have mentioned how using wi-fi will not affect your phone’s data allowance. Do keep an eye on how much you use your own wi-fi to power internet use on your phone (and on other devices) when you are at home, however. Most home broadband deals are for unlimited use, but do make sure this is the plan you have, to avoid going over the limit. And finally, embrace technology – there is a whole world (wide web) out there waiting for you!

Downsizing Do you believe that less is more? In the case of downsizing, this can be pretty accurate - less space to look after means more me-time. Fewer chores, more time to do as you choose. Of course, a smaller property needn’t mean less work if you don’t want it to. If it’s a project you’re after to fill those free hours, downsizing can offer the opportunity to get stuck in.
It could be you’ve had long-held ambitions to create your own garden, full of vegetables, landscaping, luxury shed, patio complete with heaters for those cooler evenings, and maybe even a nice relaxing area for a hot tub? If the children have flown the nest or your working hours are less, these dreams are becoming do-able. Looking for a new, smaller property puts you in a position to find the perfect canvas to put these sorts of plans into action. Plus, professionals like landscape gardeners, outdoor furniture and hot tub specialists, and experts at garden centres will be able to offer plenty of advice. A four-bedroom family house takes some looking after. Dusting, cleaning multiple bathrooms, seemingly acres of carpets to vacuum. Sure, all houses need care, but a smaller property would mean these jobs took up a lot less of your precious time. Have a look in estate agents’ windows and websites, and you will see there are many smaller properties out there with lots of potential. It may be that you spot the perfect property
that needs no work at all. Get those removal lorries or van rentals booked – all this place needs is your possessions and you! But don’t be afraid to see a house as a shell either. As anyone in the trade will tell you, layouts can be altered to your liking, and kitchens and bathrooms ripped out and replaced with your dream fixtures and fittings. You can spend as long as you like looking near and far for new furnishings to fill it. There are some super shops to visit for your carpets, curtains and furniture. It can become quite a project! Extensions can be added by a good builder, walls removed, rooms improved. Plus, aids can be added to make getting up and down stairs, or in and out of the shower, for example, easier. It does no harm to keep an eye on the housing market and adding your name to estate agents’ contact lists. Not only will arranging a valuation on your property tell you how much money you have to spend, it may be that being on the constant look out enables you to snap up the home of your
dreams. Desirable property can sell pretty fast! Have you considered downsizing to a new build? Brand new beautiful homes are being carefully crafted right now, so why not pay some show homes a visit? Do take a little time to consider location. Are you longing to live in a certain area? Maybe by the sea or a town you’ve liked since you were little? It’s never too early to think about being close to transport links and amenities you love and rely on such as shops, restaurants and salons, for example. Leaving the home where you raised your now grown family is rarely easy, but rather than rattling around in rooms you no longer need, why not take the plunge? A new home can be made cosy quite easily, and a spare room kept for visitors – friends and family. It can be the beginning of a new chapter, ready for you to write. With all this in mind, downsizing becomes less ‘pie in the sky’ and more prudent thinking.
Have you considered downsizing to a new build? Brand new beautiful homes are being carefully crafted right now, so why not pay some show homes a visit?

After Children Have Flown The Nest,
Home &Garden
Making Your Home A Haven Which happy and sad life landmarks have your four walls witnessed? Newborns’ first smiles and gurgles, unbridled toddler birthday joy and teenage angst? No doubt time has sped by, with many tears, tantrums, hugs and happiness along the way. Now the children have grown and flown the nest, this house that has stood firm through all those slammed doors and squeals of delight is quiet and still. It’s time to set about a new stage in your life with just the two of you.
O
ur children can be so all-consuming that our identity has become based around them. It is natural to wonder who you and your partner actually are now. So, it’s time to rediscover yourselves as a couple and individuals, and to fall back in love with each other - and your house. Because home is where the heart is. Be honest – have you looked at your children’s bedrooms and dreamt of turning them into a welcoming spare room or study? Maybe making one into a hobby room for your crafting, fitness or computing? Now is the time to transform that space and for you both to make your home yours again! Look for luxe furniture and
fittings in quality shops, that can help make your vision reality and inject your personalities back into your home. A professional painter and decorator can help you create a magazine-perfect space. Rearrange rooms and recycle everything you no longer need – reclaim your residence! Clear surfaces and cupboards by getting rid of your kids’ unwanted clutter (and your own!). Create files for paperwork, invest in storage solutions, and enjoy the sense of space and clarity that comes with a clean home. How about having a professional photoshoot, just the two of you, to create some awesome images of you both
smiling together, to proudly display in those newly-cleared spaces and next to your longstanding family snaps. Now sticky small person fingers and teenage sleep-overs are no longer on the cards, don’t be afraid of redecorating rooms in a light colour scheme. If cream carpets and sofas have always been your dream, now is the time to go for it. Although if you have grandchildren, make sure the felt tip pens and tomato sauce are banned when they are around. And maybe watch yourself with the red wine too… As well as cherishing your space, it’s time to fall back in love with your spouse. Are there hobbies or activities you would
like to enjoy together? Or do you prefer to do your own thing and reunite at home (which you have now made your perfect haven) at the end of the day? Now is the time to discuss what you have always wanted to do – as individuals as well as together. Long, leisurely lunches, weekend getaways and sunny breaks are all a possibility now there is no longer anyone relying on you at home. These are also opportunities to chat with each other - to remember what brought you together in the first place, and say where you would like to be in the future. All this, knowing that wherever your adventures take you, there is no place like home.

Auto-Biographies
New Volvo V60 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. Tweeting @carwriteups At first glance, you think the new Volvo V60 is the V90. Then you get closer and realise it’s smaller than its brother. The cars look very similar, and that’s a good thing because they’re both handsome.
I
f you put both models next to each other, I bet you’d agree with me that the V60 beats the V90 in terms of attractiveness. Why? Because it’s more compact and as a result, the car looks more taut and athletic. But the new estate has far more about it than sex appeal. The outgoing V60’s boot has been superseded by a load area that’s the biggest in its segment. Open the tailgate, and 539 litres of cargo capacity greets you. Crucially, the fresh V60 beats its German foes in this area. The BMW 3 Series Touring’s boot only offers 495 litres and Audi’s A4 Avant manages just 505-litres. The Swede is longer than the Audi and BMW too, meaning there’s decent room for four adult occupants. A fifth person could squeeze into the middle of the back seat, but a prominent transmission tunnel hump hampers legroom. In the front, all looks classy and relaxed, with a dashboard that is mainly digital. There’s not as much metal or wood in the V60 when compared with the V90 - instead, you get soft plastics. However, this doesn’t rain on the parade - everything still looks solid and well screwed together. Behind the wheel, the new V60 is planted and comfy. I was handed the keys to the 190PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder D4 model. The diesel engine pulls like a train with zero to
62mph arriving in 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 137mph. It’s an efficient unit too, returning a claimed average of 61.4mpg. The new estate car’s ride is excellent, primarily due to the flexible suspension system, and the steering weights up well from 40mph. These two things alone make the 2018 model V60 a delight to drive. It’s entirely suited to the UK’s roads, making it an ideal commuting machine. Thanks to its general roominess, it’s also a perfect family vehicle. The new Volvo V60’s spec is a bit of a downer. From launch, there are only two levels of trim - Momentum and Inscription. Happily, the more athletic R-Design and elevated Cross-Country variants will soon join the party. And while the V60 is well kitted-out with features like LED headlights, sat-nav and a portrait touchscreen, other alluring accessories, such as semi-autonomous driving aids and Apple CarPlay, are on the options list. These can make an already costly car even more expensive to buy or lease. Still, you should have the V60 on your shopping list if an estate car is what you’re after – especially one as eye-catching and accommodating as this.
