How can we use play to its fullest to develop – both our creative work, and our careers? Just where do we draw the line between endless possibility and a structured set of rules? We’ll find out the answers in this workshop with Jessica Walsh and her exploration of play as a tool for creativity and innovation.
is a ow state, the optimal state of mind in creating and innovating new things.
Jessica breaks down the conditions for entering this ‘flow state’ into three simple principles:
1
Be confident enough to take risks and confident enough to fail. Have a generous amount of time to work on a project.
2
3
Have a sense of humour.
CREATIVITY
THRIVES FROM CONSTRAINTS
“When there are no rules or limitations on a project it’s easy to be overwhelmed by endless possibilities and harder to focus on coming up with great ideas and visual solutions”.
We will learn to embrace the constraints as interesting challenges to play and experiment within.
challenge Jessica will challenge the participants to develop a proposal. In order to get there, this is the process:
Some will be given:
60 MINUTES: Introducing Jessica Walsh and the project, showing. Examples of constraints used in creativity in history.
GROUPS: Participants will randomly be split into teams. TIMES: They will have four hours total to create the piece.
45 MINUTES: Sketch ideas for making the proposal out of the material. The final piece should use the chosen material in a significant way to create the result, however the general class materials can be used to help create the final piece.
Some will be chosen:
30 MINUTES: Break
MATERIAL: The team will choose one material to work with. CONTENT: The team will choose the creation.
90 MINUTES: The next hour and a half will be spent creating. 30 MINUTES: All walk around and see final work.
