Regionalism & Globalism Architecture is like a tree. Only by rooting in local soil and absorbing outer nutrients can it bloom and fruit. Contrary to the prevailing idea considering design as a simple practice of combining design aspects in unprecedented ways, I appreciate the morphology and context of the site wherein architecture ideas arise from. This is the concept of architectural regionalism, also known as the vertical and horizontal aspects of architecture. Because of different spatio-temporal characteristics of different sites, I would firstly seek architecture ideas by researches and analysis of the urban morpology and local context when I have a project at hand, thus making the architecture work in concert with the site. Because of the fact that architecture is not merely a living machine, I would seek ways to implement the site elements into my design, and to deconstruct the mechanical elements from my design afterwards. Because of the materiality of architecture, I would try to materialize my understanding and thoughts into concrete construction details so as to future realise my design. Regionalism stands for a series of Because-of’s, a causal relationship from A to B. This is my linear approach to my designs, as well as my speculation towards architecture and architects. However, with the deepening of cognition in architecture, I have been getting to realize the ambiguity of designing process in respect of regionalism and linear logic. Therefore, I need a change, change myself from regionalism to interdisciplinary regionalism and globalism. I need a change. Therefore, I begin to observe the city with global and future visions with a new-born ultimate aim to create a Utopia Town beyond mundane, in which people lead harmonious lives with nature, space and neighborhood to get their maximum satisfy. Regionalism & Globalism actually demonstrates my logic in designing process and the logic of my speculations. This portfolio collects my speculations of the natures of architecture and architects. HISTORY DESCRPTION The city of Guangzhou has a history of 2000 years, with a start of a center of some surrounding fishing villages. At the end of 14th AC, Guangzhou started to become the only port from which merchants from all over the world delt with Chinese. And the Silk Road on Sea began. Later on, in 19th AC, with the British Troups invading into the mainland, the role of port was strenthened. Our site is exactly where the port was. The residentials and texture of blocks was just the relics of the Port History.

TRADITIONAL HOUSE RECONSTRUCTION We decided to reconstruct the houses in traditional ways, by reseting the skylights in the middle of the houses and re-arrange the functions in them according to their daily life.

Between face to face buildings, the distance should be less than 4m if the buildings both are old, illustrated by distance a; and the distance should no less then 6m if either one of them is newly constructed.

The new buildings on the site of a length of 10m should be built 10% backwards of the front border, in order to creat public or semi-public green spaces onto the street.
The cornices, door heights and window sills on new buildings should be in an alignment of those on historic buildings.
On the process of reconstructing, the aspect ratio (A/B) shoud be ensured to be no less than the ratio b e f o r e reconstructing; the ratio of a newly constructed street should be no less than 2/3.

When the building is relatively higher than average, the upper floors should use terrace to ensure the ratio of 2/3 be no less than 2/3
In a courtyard, fences are recommented to be used to enclosure the space; on special conditions in which walls have to be used, the height of the walls should be no more than 1.5m
In public places, the corners of the structures higher than 1m should be filleted to prevent sharp corners from hurting playing children.

SURVEY AND ANALYSIS ON SITE Before working on any project assigned to me, I would seek for conceptual ideas through looking into the site features, which means the timing local history and spatial city context surrounding the site. Because of my believe in that the cultural history and context are the only thing that can make the design only belong to the site while not anywhere else, I firstly conduct survey and analysis of the site. That is how my idea comes.

1 Physical Conditions
The lake is to the west of the site. There exists a conflict between view direction and physical requirements such as shading from the west dusk and ventilize from the south monsoon.

There is a hill on the west of the site blocking the viewsight. We should seek a way to overcome the sight-blocking problem with least cost of nature.
Shading and Ventilising
Since the museum is located in Zhuhai, South China, and the theme of it is folk, I designed a measure to overcome the shading and ventilising problem by using the traditional skylight.

SOLUTION 1
DEFORMED COLUMN NET I believe there is always a kind of column net that is uncommon but cheap and funtionable. I discovered this column net. With this column net, a skylight would naturally comes out, and there would turn out to be many combinations of the units of the net, making free expension and different spaces creation possible.

DIVISIONS AND SPACES The basic unit of the Deformed Column Net can not only be expansed freely, but also be devided differently to create a diversity of types/sizes of spaces. Which can be referred to flowing space, in which functional needs can be met by shifting walls and floors without changing the bearing structures.

Due to the feature of view direction and wind-direction, I decided to open large windows on south and north elevations in order to receive more wind and sunshine, and use U-shape double-layers glass to shade from the westward dusk. On east and west elevations, I mainly use solid walls

MODELING Because of the materiality of architecture, I often use hand-made models to generate the spatial experience inside my buildings, and modify them accordingly. What’s more important, it is better than any other way to use models in which I could express myself and present my work of design to the others. It is a construction process, by which I could stay closer to the reality to design something that really makes sense. Later on in this portfolio, you are going to see more hand-made models demonstrating my works.

The back part of the house is mainly the pocket of parterre and balcony. A tilling roof meets the phonetic and space-aethetic need.
The front part of the operahouse constributes the entrance and audience lounge, which requires the space to be bright and shaded from the westward dusk sun. A parametric shading skin could meet it.

DETAIL EXPERIMENTS Because of the nature of material, I should also pay attention to setting and designing details so that I can ensure my illusion would be accessible. This is the process of materialising, in which I would have some study on reference constructions fisrt, taking their experience, and then improve mine. Because of my lack of actual stie experience, I would do detail experiments to collect data, and gain similar experience. Usually the experiments are conducted through modeling, hand-made or CAD virtual.

THE DISTRICT OF CHAMARTIN The site, Chamartin, is located to the North of Madrid and is home to the Chamartin train station, the second largest the second largest in Madrid. This is a project to submerge the train station, providing further space for developing within the city limits.

POCKETS AND SEIVES
This section perfectly reflects our understanding of discontinuous spaces and our concept of BabelTown, a town in the sky. Under the section we picked several world famous buildings in order to make a contrast of the height and style. For a 300m skyrise, we give up the traditional method of extruding similer plans and form a stick-like boring highrise. Because of the hyper-rise also revealing the future life style, we also design a kind of transporter, in which people can go up and down, forward or backward freely. This kind of transporter is the seives of our Babel Tree.

THE ELEVATOR DESIGN CONCEPT COMING FROM THE SIEVES Since our idea generates from a simulational tree, we decided to build the skin according to aboreal natural texture, with steel net construction simulating the bark and lifts around it simulating the seive-tubes. Our steel net is generated through iso-structrual lines of a cloth blowed up by native Spanish wind. The tubes within set a new type of lift which does not necessarily require straightness and can be motivated by chemical water.

THE TOWN A City beyond Mundane
A City beyond Mundane This is one of our basic concepts, the Babel Town, a town in the sky. In the Babel Town, people can walk without the fear of mechanic vehicles, can lead their lifes above the mundane city as if they are hermits, and view their city in a much higher view. This is a life of decency, a life of world-class respect, and a life that above reality but not within fantasy. Between the Bable Town and the city below, there set three wormholes transportation.

TEAMWORK Because of the complexity of the project as well as the limit of deadline, I organized a group of my friends to complete this task together. We all devoted our best passion in it. Lin, the left one on the picture, mainly contributed a series of survey dealing with technical issues. Huang, the girl, completed the fashion drawings. Hu, the boy on right, was perfect with software, offering software support. And I was the team leader, who came up with the concept and who conducted the whole team so that we could cooperate to form a unit.

PROJECT INTERPRETATION Located at the border of Shenzhen and Hongkong, the Port of Liantang Xiangyuanwei represents the most severe crash of the two absolutely different characteristics of them. Via diversity of analysis of the the functions and textures of Shenzhen and Hongkong, a series of logics plants our understanding of the sites onto the specific ground, from bones to skin and to the character finally. Simultaneously, the thriving form of our idea also represents the prosperity of the cities across the river. We utilised crosswise thinking and vertical thinking both together, so that we could cover all the aspects contributeing to the port. Based on the features of functions, we used the modeling method as Voronoi to put our concept of texture into reality. Besides, we also consider the changes of spaces experiencing, which will in turn makes the commuters feel the city characters changing while getting through the port.

On Sun-light and Human-flow This was the first time that I had ever designed a boundary control point. To get better perceptual and rational knowledge of what a terminus was, I went to a constructed boundary control point near the construction site, staying there for a whole day from dawn to dusk, collecting data of physical conditions and the changes of people’s flow. No certain results was drawn from it though.

PLACES I HAVE TRAVELLED TO This is the best part of this portfolio. I am proud to state that I have travelled to most cities in China and some big ones in the world. I love travelling since my Mum first took me to Beijing in 2000. In the following year at the age of 13, I travelled alone to Shanghai for 10 days. That was the first time I had felt how big the world is and as well as a great sense of freedom. In 2004, I flew alone to America to visit my father who was having further study in San Diago, Ca. In the following two months in America, I went to most big cities and set up my mind to have a study experience in the US, for my bacholar degree, or master. Thereafter, I have been travelling at least three times a year. I think the meaning of one’s life is to experince, to view more natural or artificial beauties, to taste different culture and customs, and to live in an entire unknown environment. Life is short and the world is infinite, and so is my desire to know it. One of my personal dreams is to travel all around the world, in a boat or balloon, or some similar slow ways. My next target is Erope and Tibet. Hope I will reach them soon.
