ABOUT USP

ASIAN MEDICAL STUDENTS’ EXCHANGE PROGRAM

USP(United Social Program) is a weekend tour arranged especially for all exchange students of SCORE and SCOPE. This July, it will be held in Hualien, by Tzu Chi University. Not only will you get to experience the Taroko Gorge , rafting and the beautiful Pacific coastline, but also a great chance to meet friends from all over the world!

The Republic of China (Taiwan) was founded in 1912, making the first democratic republic in Asia. It lies off the southeastern coast of mainland Asia, across the Taiwan Strait from China. Taiwan enjoys warm weather all year round, and the raining season is March to May. With a dynamic food culture, hot-spring villages, temple towns and adventures in both shopping malls and forests, Taiwan is viewed as one of Asia’s most diverse destinations.

With all of its natural beauty, most of Hualien is a national scenic area. You can enjoy the impressive gorges at Taroko National Park, the stunning natural landscapes of the Liyu Lake, and a beautiful stretch of pebble beach at Chishing beach. If you’ve never tried whitewater rafting before, the Xiuguluan River might well be the perfect spot for you. Speeding through narrow gorges and winding rivers of Eastern Taiwan will surely raise your epinephrine. Wherever you go in Hualien, nature is there to greet you.

Hualien is Taiwan's biggest county. With its towering peaks, azure skies, vast seas, scenic valleys, cultural diversity, and friendly kindhearted people, Hualien has become one of Taiwan's first-choice travel destinations.

In Hualien, here is an abundance of food and local delights to try. A few of the eateries are “must eat� if you visit Hualien. Ziqiang night market is always the best place to find local delights. You can find Taiwanese spring rolls, coffin sandwich, Taiwanese sausage, fried pork ribs, exploding chicken rolls, fresh juices and of course, the pearl milk tea in the night market. It is great to have a refreshing bowl of shaved ice dessert flavoured with caramel syrup and condensed milk with the red beans during summertime. Chewy and yummy mochi with new flavours is one of the most famous local specialties in Hualien, too.

Tzu Chi University is a famous landmark in Hualien. It’s only a 5-minute drive from Hualien train station. Because it is located beside the Central Mountain Range, spectacular natural scenery comes into view whenever you gaze out from the windows. Tzu Chi University was established by Master Cheng Yen in 1994 in the ester region of Taiwan, educating the students to become the ones who devote themselves to help others. With the motto“ kindness, compassion, joy and equanimity”, Tzu Chi blends professionalism with humanitarianism and expects us to do so even after we graduate from school.

Tzu Chi is known for the Jing Si Hall. Jing Si Hall is not only a

palace of art, but also a place for gathering the spirit of all Tzu Chi people. A witness to people’s kindness, compassion, and deep love, Jing Si Hall provides Tzu Chi people with spiritual nourishment.

Highlight: social & culture A. Sightseeing (a) Taroko National Park Taroko National Park situated in the eastern part of the Taiwan. This park features high mountains and sheer gorges. Many of its peaks tower above 3,000m in elevation, with many natural wonders. The varied mountain peaks, numerous waterfalls, diverse plant forms and animal life, together with the indigenous Taroko people, create the rich texture of this unique natural ecosystem. Â

(a) Acupunture Acupuncture is a collection of procedures involving penetration of the skin with needles to stimulate certain points on the body. In its classical form, it is a characteristic component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).Through the introduction and implementing, we can learn how some traditional Chinese medicine works, and experience the magical power of acupuncture.


(b) Spring Rolls & Dumplings

Have you ever seen Bruce Lee or Jacky Chen beat up his enemies with fantastic tricks in the movie? These fantastic tricks are wecalled Chinese Kong-fu. Chinese Kong-fu also known as Martial arts, are traditions of combat practices, which are practiced for a variety of reasons: self-defense, competition, physical health and fitness. In the culture experience, we are going to show you the part of self-defense. It’s quite useful when your hands are grabbed.

(d) ShuFa 書法 ShuFa is the Chinese name for calligraphy. Traditional ShuFa writing uses the Four Treasures of the Study (文房四寶 in Chinese): the ink brushes, Chinese ink, paper, and the ink stone, which we will introduce to you. You can experience how the shape, the size, and the stretch of the ink brush, and the color, the color density and the water density of the ink,

as well as the water absorption speed and the surface texture of the paper give the "spirit" to the characters. When you draw the calligraphy, you can feel the spirits from the words and understand more about Chinese culture.

Taiwan traditional handicrafts express our multifaceted culture over 5,000 years and also the values and wishes in our lives. Perhaps you have heard of PingXi Sky Lantern Festival (it was named as one of the world's 14 must-go festivals), or maybe you have been fascinated by the symmetrical design and enormous meanings of Chinese knots. Still eager for more? We got something even better. Through the DIY session, you can make your own paper sky lantern accessory. Make a wish and light it up!

Plan A. Rafting Tour of Xiuguluan River Are you eager for exciting water sport? Do you want to take a good look at magnificent gorge? You must seize the opportunity to raft in Xiuguluan River in Hualien. There, you will see whirlpools and rapids which make the boats drastically shake. These are the highlights of the trip. If you have adventurous spirit, you can come here to enjoy rafting. **If you don’t want to raft, then we can go to visit some small spots in Hualien. (Plan B.) Check out Plan B. on next Page!


Plan B. Touring around Hualien About USP

1.  Ching-Hsiou Temple is the best preserved Japanese-style temple in eastern Taiwan. 2.  Liyu Lake is a site of many varied recreational activities. 3.  Yun-Shan-Shuei is definite the heaven on earth with floating clouds, beautiful mountains and sparkling lakes. 4.  Pine Garden offers a wonderful view of the mouth of Meilun River, Hualien Port, and the Pacific Ocean.

Notice In case of typhoon, schedule might be cancelled. There will be a full refund. To protect from scratches or any possible injury, please wear long sleeves and pants for rafting. Bring personal medication. Insect repellent is suggested for mosquito bites are common during summer.
