ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN Geoffrey Bawa, the father of Tropical Modernist architecture, began the design of our resort in 1995. The main building in this Geoffrey Bawa hotel highlights his signature aesthetic of sunlit, breezy structures at one with their surrounds. Anantara Kalutara Resort features a striking Dutch colonial style with iconic soaring ceilings and free-flowing sun-dappled spaces opening onto stunning waterscapes while inviting the breeze in This was to be one of his final projects. Due to the civil war, the project lay dormant for 15 years until one of his protégés, Channa Daswatte, completed this Geoffrey Bawa architecture masterpiece. Bawa’s vision also inspires the resort library, modelled on his personal study, where furnishings either designed or owned by him are put together to create a particularly Bawa-style interior. 1. Why did you choose this hotel room? The basis for the choice ‐ rational / emotional / experiential My choice was led due to a rational one considering it having similar characteristic as of my site context. Apart from that, what interested me was the The combination of the warm color palette used in the interiors and the colonial furniture.

2. How does this connect to the context? Context ‐ local ‐ physical & cultural / brand / typology of hotel rooms Since Srilanka was colonized by the Dutch and the British, had a lot of influence of colonial furniture and tropical modernist style of architecture. The combination of the colonial furniture with the warm colored material palette and cool colors used in the furnishing go hand in hand and set up perfectly in the tropical nature of the context. For this luxurious private villa, the standalone living room and bedroom has a high compound wall. But from inside the villa, both the rooms have large glass openings which open up to the swimming pool, allowing at the at-most light to enter and wind to passthrough.

3. What experience do you think that the designer had Intended?

Especially for this villa, I think there were two factors kept in mind- one, making one experience living on a private island, and two, at the same time one can fully enjoy the nature.

Experience Mapping LEARNINGS FROM THIS EXERCISE

By Un- raveling, I have understood, -The importance of each layer in the making of space. - How these different layers come together in a cohesive way to create spaces with experience and the right ambiance has got clarity.

Contextualizing interiors -Material Tracing- Knowing the local and authentic materials to the region. These materials when come together with a contemporary form and style of design create an experience of its own. -The Use of local crafts in interior spaces create a sense of authenticity .

“Your island hideaway” To give the clients a disconnect from the social world, this room is located and created in a way that still connects one to the nature at its best and experiences its tropical modernist nature. The form of the room-sloping roof is inspired from the local and vernacular style of architecture. With the colonial furniture and the use Warm color palette which goes in sink with the colors of nature. This creates a unique experience and ambiance to the space.

UI1117

-The history and culture of the region helps gaining references to create unique experiences real to its region. For example here, the use of colonial furniture makes a difference in creating a mood to the space.

Architects: WOW Architects Total Area: 16000 ft² Year: 2016 Architect In Charge:Wong Chiu Man Clients:The Residency Group, Chennai, India Landscape:Nyee Phoe Flower Garden Private Limited Country:Maldives Luxury Hotel chain of Marriott International Rating: 5-Star

Designed to be ecologically friendly, we offer 77 inspired accommodations, including 44 overwater villas and 33 located on the beach. Enjoy an unrestricted view of the Indian Ocean or our island’s lush tropical gardens from your private terrace. The architects choose to design the resort in a way that delights the senses through education, creating awareness, and new paradigms of interacting with the physical environment. Paradise is emotionally and intellectually experienced and enjoyed, but with a profound awareness of the complex relationships of the eco systems being inhabited. MASTER PLAN AND LANDSCAPE CONCEPT - The island is surrounded by a large ‘House Reef’, and is defined by several distinct ecological zones: Lagoon, beach, coastal and jungle. These zones become the basis of creating experiential programs that guides the guests through their journey of discovery and awareness creation. Each zone has unique anchoring activities: The Lagoon zone has a water amphitheater and a signature spa, the Beach zone with two signature restaurants, the Jungle zone has a nature discovery center and a pop-up café, the Coastal zone has a dive center and a signature bar. Threading through these activities is an art trial where the seasonal work of artists in residence showcase pop-up installations using found objects and locally sourced materials. The landscape concept focuses on the conservation of the existing island flora and fauna, and careful replacement of displaced plant material with locally sourced species from neighboring islands. Selective introduction of certain plant species, especially fruit trees, herbs and salt resistant plants are made into the experiential zones to reinforce the programmatic activities, for example the edible garden activity, and the nature discovery trail.

UI1117

ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN - The architecture and interior design are treated as extensions of the primary concept driver, nature itself. The forms and spaces are derived from nature, and the juxtaposition of these forms against the variations of the primitive hut creates the architectural expression of the resort. These family of forms constitute a nature inspired island village that encourages the guests to question, speculate and imagine the formal origins and thereby creates awareness. The fish-scale-like timber shingles around the kitchen and smooth iridescent stucco in the ‘body’ of the whale emphasis the marine iconography. The panels have been created using the Maldivian craft of pyrography by Indian artist Maya Burman, using henna-style drawing typically done on hands and feet as an expression of a celebratory moment of joy and gathering. B | What are the factors that will impact or influence the concept ? Below stated are design factors which will impact while translating the concept to design and building it up

ZONING Associating the contextual concept with different spaces

will creates zones and generate peculiar experiences for the customers. Amenity spaces- facility spaces

MOVEMENT & CIRCULATION in the spaces will be dependent on the arrangement and layout of the spaces that will create flow of circulation and movement in the spaces.

OPENINGS Visual Experience, the play of light & shadow and Ventilation in the space

TRANSITION Based on the conceptual zoning in each space, different experiences will generate. Hence, transition from one space to another will be one of the major factors to experience in this resort

VOLUME, SCALE AND PROPORTION OF DIFFERENT SPACES Since the conceptual inspirations are set in different typologies, they have different scales and volumes, which create contrasting experiences. Hence, recreating these experiences, spaces would have different volumes, scale and proportions to generate that experience.

C |Site Plan

Just like the village organisation in the hilly regions at different levels, The spaces in the resort are organised in a clustered organisation.

Timber Alpine region

Foothills of the Himalayas

My concept is truely inspired from the immediate Context. The contrasting characteristic of the Landscape in same region which considers of the dooars - foothills of Himalayas, the dense evergreen forest and the tea gardens - all have different and varied experiences of its own. I would want to give the similar experience of these landscapes in different zones of the resort. Also the natual elements like aimals, birds, trees and flowers avaialable in that particular region will be used as motifs in differnt ways like for the tapestries, wood carvings, and to derive patterns and texture .

Tea gardens

Evergreen Forests

D| Conceptual Zoning

A. RECEPTION & LOBBY -

Foothills of the Himalayas A village square - It is a meeting point for all from all the other spaces. Gives an aunthentic and vernacular

B. PASSAGES- woods C.

D. RESTAURANT & BAR -Dense Forests While walking the through the thick forest of oaks and sal, elephants walking by, the machans are the places you stay at!

E. SPA -Alpine region Region with the least vegetation but atmost dry and grainy textures. The highest atlitude and region can be at. Most relaxing and peaceful

E| Water as an element

LAKE- The site sets beside the teesta river barrage, allows it to enter the resort. Because of this, a lot of migeratory birds are come especially in the winter season. Apart form that this region recieves the maximum rainfall which also allows a lot of birds to come. CLIENTS- Due to this, a lot of Bird watches, nature enthuastics would be major clientage for this resort.

Gajoldoba is untouched and not touristy. Surrounding the water body are the beautiful mountains towards the north. Hence becomes the right location for nature lovers.

River and water streams have always been a source that meanders along with the mountains and is a constant feature in the such a terrain. An imporatnat factor for the settlement of villages and availibilty of animals around. Similarly, The meandering water streams and water channels near these spaces will enhance the experiences of the spaces and will also allow the birds to come closer to the rooms.

Meandering water streams and Lake

F| APPROACH OF TRANSLATING CONCEPT TO DESIGN Woods

By creating spaces which makes one experience a similar kind of notion of the landscape in that amenity space through the formal use of architectual space making elements in the interior spaces.

Brick

Verticals- Creating divisions and space voids through Screens, Partitioning systems, columns, perforated walls, door and window openings for light and ventillation
